SEASON PREVIEW
SCOTS TRY TO STAY CLASSY IN 6A HP aims to maintain success in largest class By Todd Jorgenson
People Newspapers After several decades of playing Goliath, the Highland Park football program is ready to embrace the role of David. That’s one way in which head coach Randy Allen characterizes the jump the Scots will make this season to the new Class 6A, thanks to the latest round of University Interscholastic League realignment. HP has been among the top schools in the state in terms of enrollment at the Class 4A level since the 1980s. Now, a surge in the student population has positioned the Scots as one of the smallest schools in the largest classification. For the winningest program in state history, it’s a challenge that the Scots are ready to accept. “We just look at it as a bigger stage,” Allen said. “There’s better competition, for sure, but any competitor wants to play the best to be the best.” HP has played plenty of Class 5A programs during its time in 4A, and has conquered many of the top 4A teams in the state during its deep playoff runs. It has consistently maintained a roster size and talent pool comparable with much larger schools.

Head coach Randy Allen said the new classification hasn’t changed the off-season routine for Highland Park.

However, the Scots haven’t competed at the top classification in the state since 1987, which also was the most recent year HP finished with a losing record. As it moves into District 106A with the Richardson ISD and Mesquite ISD schools, their schedule will instantly become more competitive. “It’s going to be more physical, so you need to have more depth,” Allen said. “I think this year will be more exciting for
our players and our fans because there are new teams to play and there will be closer games, and we’ll have to play harder.” Last season, the Scots earned a district title and used a 13game winning streak to reach the Class 4A Division II state semifinals before falling to eventual champion Denton Guyer. Among the milestones that should be tested this season are HP’s five consecutive district titles, its 35 straight wins in district play, and perhaps most
impressive, its 79-game home winning streak that dates back more than 15 years. Still, Allen said the move hasn’t changed the offseason routine for the Scots, and he thinks the players will respond well to the new district landscape. “We don’t think about it at all,” said senior center Clayton Woods. “A good football team is a good football team. You just line up and play.”

Experience should provide edge For much of last season, the Highland Park offense was a work in progress that relied upon an experienced defense while it developed depth and chemistry. This year, those roles might be reversed as the season opens, with the Scots offense returning several starters from a unit that keyed a deep postseason run a year ago. With the HP defense now facing losses due to graduation, the offense will be counted upon to pick up the slack. “We haven’t missed a beat since last year,” said center Clayton Woods, who has verbally committed to UT-San Antonio. “We’ve got 10 guys who have played in five playoff games, which is pretty unusual.” The Scots likely will start nine seniors on offense, most of which saw extensive playing time during HP’s run to the Class 4A Division II state semifinals last fall. Dual-threat quarterback Brooks Burgin returns after passing for 3,497 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. He also ran for 19 scores. Leading receivers Andrew Frost and Kevin Ken also will play prominent roles. “We have quite a few starters back on offense,” said HP head coach Randy Allen. “Senior leadership is always critical.” At running back, Stephen Dieb and

New faces run familiar scheme Don Woods hopes to bring stability to the Highland Park defensive coaching staff during a time of considerable turnover. Woods is taking over as defensive coordinator for Mark Howeth, who left for DeSoto. However, the former defensive line coach and his reconfigured staff will run the same 3-4 scheme that the Scots have utilized for more than a decade. “We wanted to keep things the same,” said HP head coach Randy Allen. “We think our players have a real good grasp of what we’re doing. We’ve been training them since they were seventh graders.” Woods hopes that familiarity will help to smooth out a transition that will include eight new starters. “We’re really not changing that much,” Woods said. “We’ve gone back and really tried to work on the fundamentals.” The defense should benefit from the leadership of linebacker Mitchell Kaufman, an honorable mention Class 4A all-state selection a year ago who has verbally committed to SMU. He will play alongside Michael Linehan, who moved from Michigan along with his father, Scott, who is the new passing-game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. The secondary includes experienced safeties Stephen Briggs and Boomer Ba-
