’m a newspaper publisher, but I’m also a mom, a volunteer, an advocate, and an activist. I know, that last one is a dirty word these days. Here’s what Merriam-Webster says about activism: “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action, especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue.” Okay, so not so bad, right? When the economy hit the skids and I left publishing for a couple of years, I had it in my head that I was going to do something to feed my soul. I tried my hand at nonprofit work and also investigated the possibility of starting a business around one of my passions, food-waste diversion. The latter was not a feasible business model at the time, and in business, timing is everything. The nonprofit work I did was for a well-respected organization that is doing great work, but it wasn’t something I could feel passionate about. I’ve learned to open my eyes to opportunities that present themselves to me, discovering things through quieting my mind, praying, and journaling. I found that if I get what’s on my mind down on paper, I’m clearing space for what is really important. Outside of work, I’ve started volunteering for my church community, I’m involved with their school, and I work with a group whose mission is to serve the poor. Through that work, I’ve met people that I would not have otherwise met, and have had the opportunity to work on a project that is very meaningful and important.
I’m feeding my soul and I’m doing it while continuing to work at something I’m good at, for a great company that is embraces passionate people. You don’t need to quit your job to find your passion. Quiet your mind and it might just find you. Pat Martin, Publisher pat.martin@ peoplenewspapers.com

Cheesy Delivery Driver Gets Topped By Security at HPHS
S
omebody never got their lunch on Feb. 6 at Highland Park High School, and things got a bit spicy during the fallout. At 12:30 p.m., a pizza-delivery man got into a heated exchange with a security guard at the student entrance after being told that he couldn’t leave the pizza at the front desk due to school policy. When asked to wait while the source of the delivery request was located, the driver became agitated, and began yelling and cursing as a school resource officer instructed him to leave the campus. Instead, things escalated further and he pushed the officer as he was being escorted out of the building, according to a report from the University
TODD JORGENSON
Park Police Department. That effectively ended his shift for the day. Jacob Long, 19, of Dallas, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass. His delivery vehicle, a tan 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, was towed. It’s unknown what happened to the pizza, which might be the biggest crime of all in this case.

E D U C AT I O N HPHS Students Extend Friendships Overseas Annual trip to Taiwan set for March By Paige Kerley
People Newspapers Wenzen Chuang moved to the United States from Taiwan when he was 8 years old, but is taking advantage of a unique opportunity to return. Chuang, an AP chemistry teacher at Highland Park High School, will be one of the chaperones for HPHS’s Youth Ambassador Program over spring break. He will lead 11 students and use his fluency in Mandarin to assist with translation. Chuang said he’s eager to see how much he remembers about the school system in Taiwan and compare it to his experiences as an educator in the United States. “At our school we have lots of different types of probes we use to do data collection and then we analyze the data and so forth,” Chuang said. “That’s not anything I think they’ve seen or have been exposed to.” Members of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Dallas/ Fort Worth helped start the annual exchange program in 2009 for Taiwanese students to experience life in an American high school. HPHS students then visit Taiwan each March. HPHS junior Madison Sheahan said the meet-and-greet and homecoming dances are often Taiwanese students’ favorite part of the trip to Texas.

“My student brought a purse just for the dance and special shoes with gems all over them,” said Sheahan. “I know she was really excited.” Edna Phythian, HPHS global connections liaison, said painting fingernails is often a priority because that isn’t allowed at their school in Taiwan. The Taiwanese students also enjoy American fashion, barbecue, and a chance to explore Fort Worth
during their two weeks in Texas. LaManda Mallard, an HPHS biology teacher, saw a lack of hands-on learning in Taiwanese science classes that didn’t match student interests. “They have a high development rate of students who go into science and industry,” she said. “I was shocked to see how their implementation at the high school looked very different than ours and we have numbers
trending in the other direction.” Phythian said part of the reason the program is so successful is because of the kind nature of the Taiwanese people. “They love so quickly,” she said. “You don’t leave thinking, ‘The place was this, and the trees were this.’ You leave remembering people.” Due to the success of the exchange with Taiwan, HPHS students will travel to China and Ar-
gentina next year. They will be required to research projects on the countries’ social issues and present them to classmates. Sheahan still talks regularly with her “host sisters” in Taiwan through an app on her phone. She is considering a gap year in Taiwan after high school because of her experiences there. “I want to learn the language and hopefully that will open up other opportunities,” she said.
Trustees Need More Time to Fine-Tune Bond Proposal By Todd Jorgenson
People Newspapers Highland Park ISD won’t have a bond election this spring. District trustees reached consensus to hold off on sending a massive bond package to voters because of questions about the cost and scope of potential improvement projects. November is now the target for a bond initiative that could exceed $200 million, and will focus on relieving congestion
for a growing student population that already has each HPISD campus bursting at the seams. The board has spent several work sessions dissecting the details of an ambitious proposal by its facilities advisory committee that includes building a fifth elementary school on land the district plans to purchase from Northway Christian Church. That proposal also recommended that HPISD tear down and rebuild Bradfield and
University Park elementary schools, and proposed several elaborate solutions to parking issues at each campus. There also are issues about shrinking green space and aging athletic facilities at Highland Park High School. “The complexity of the plan requires some really careful thought and analysis,” said HPISD superintendent Dawson Orr. “No matter what proposal comes forward, it will be

Service Dog is Reader’s Best Friend By Sarah Bennett
“HE ’LL P U T HI S PAW ON YOU W HI L E YOU ’R E R E A D I N G L I K E HE L I K E S YOU A LOT. ”
People Newspapers A classroom full of second-graders disperses, with students finding their own quiet corners to read. But one reader is a little different from the rest — for starters, he’s got fur and four paws. Moose, a 10-year-old golden retriever, is a trained reading-therapy dog, and his visits to Karrlie Carbajal’s class at Hyer Elementary School are often the highlight of the week. “It helps the students who aren’t as confident about reading out loud,” Carbajal said. “Moose won’t correct them.” Not only does Moose’s presence boost the confidence of readers looking to bolster their reading skills, but Carbajal has found that it has helped animal-shy students get more comfortable around pets. “They love it,” she said. “For the kids who were not sure about dogs, they get so excited now.” Overall, the independent-reading part of class is about 45 minutes. Moose can only hold his attention with one activity for about an hour, anyway. Moose’s owner, Margaret Reid, adopted him with therapy training in mind.

C H R I S M C G AT H E Y
Second-grader Ellie Sullivan reads to Moose while dog owner Margaret Reid listens. Once that was complete, she touched base with elementary schools around town. In 2014, she contacted Hyer, where her now-grown children once attended school. “He’s got the right temperament for
it; he’s best suited to children,” Reid said. “All he has to do is lie there.” Hyer librarian Janet Peters reached out to all the teachers and let them know that Reid and her pup were available for class-time reading. She then held a draw-
ing of teachers’ names — Carbajal and her students have been reaping the benefits ever since. “He pays attention and he also likes to listen, even though he moves around,” second-grader Katherine Clark said. Every Tuesday, Moose and Reid stroll in for story time. Only half the class can read to him in one session, though, so students typically read to him one-onone every other week. With that structure, students spend no more than five minutes with the dog each session. But that small amount of time is clearly making an impact for students, who love their new furry friend. “He’ll put his paw on you while you’re reading like he likes you a lot,” second-grader Kate Hale said.
Hosted by UT Dallas’ Arts and Technology (ATEC) program, the series features speakers from a wide range of backgrounds in science, technology and art. They will present public lectures on topics aimed at exploring the evolving relationships among art, technology, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences.

EDUCAT IO N CONTINUED FROM 6 larger than anything this community has ever seen.” Several of those recommendations strayed from a framework that trustees drafted early last year, and pushed the potential price tag for bonds to as much as $300 million. Committee members said they wanted to look at a long-term solution to growth issues that are forecasted to continue. “Rebuilding now will save taxpayers money in the long run,” said Lee Wagner, chairman of the FAC elementary subcommittee. “Right now we have the option to rebuild schools without having to acquire land.” However, trustee Joe Taylor was among those who urged the district to step back and examine the cost of the bond issue relative to incremental educational benefits, and then prioritize projects accordingly. “We have a fiduciary responsibility,” Taylor said. “People move to our district for the educational attributes, not the buildings.” Although the extra six months will delay the schedule of renovation projects, trustees argue that the extra time is needed to educate voters and make sure that costs are in line with needs, and to answer questions about critical pieces
The
of the puzzle. “Facilities don’t replace high-quality instruction, but they certainly help support it,” Orr said. “The core of quality education comes down to what happens in the classroom, and the support that teachers and parents provide around that. Our facilities do limit our ability to do that. We have undersized classrooms and limited common spaces for students to work.” Orr said the district now plans to hold a series of community forums in April to solicit feedback, and then have the details of the bond initiative worked out by May 1. The election then will be called in August. “There will be some challenges around managing enrollment, but I don’t think it’s a significant delay,” Orr said of shifting the original election target date from May to November. “We really are trying to look toward a longterm perspective.” Former HPISD board members who met with the current board in early February shared that sentiment. “Don’t put my district at risk by doing the short-term,” former trustee Mike Boone said. “I’d rather pay the taxes now than find out in 10 years we didn’t do it right.” Email todd.jorgenson@ peoplenewspapers.com

CAMP S
Summer Camps More Necessity Than Luxury The costs of summer overnight camp and programs may seem daunting to many families, especially those who pay for private schools. However, for working parents, camp is not a luxury but an essential part of the summer. With three months of summer to plan for, do you envision your child lying on the couch in front of the TV the whole time? Do you have thoughts of your teen plugged into an iPod or a book for three straight months? Or worse? It is a recurring issue for all parents, no matter what the age of their child is. Peoples Ad Feb 2015 OL.pdf Perhaps we should rethink
HELENE ABRAMS summer: instead of viewing it as endless hours for parents to coordinate activities, view it as part of your child’s education plan. Summer camps and programs offer your child an opportunity for learning new skills, preparing for independence, and developing pas1 2/10/15 12:20 PM sions that may extend to future
careers, or life long hobbies. Help is readily available to families picking a sleep away camp or teen program that matches their child’s interests and needs. Tips on Trips and Camps offers the following suggestions to make summer sleep-away camps and teen programs part or your child’s education plan: If your child… nIs an athlete, how about a sports specialty program to build those skills or a traveling sports trip or a program in sports management or broadcasting? n Loves the outdoors and
has outgrown camp, how about an outdoor adventure including rock-climbing, whitewater rafting, and hiking? n Loves the water, how about a sailing expedition or a marine biology program or working with dolphins or sea turtles? nIs inquisitive about other regions of the world, how about a language immersion or cultural exploration program? nHas an interest in the performing arts, how about a focused program in acting, set design, dance, music or filmmaking? n Wants to make a difference, consider a wide range
of community service or leadership programs in the US or abroad. Summer overnight camps and teen programs are wonderful opportunities for your child to have new experiences not found in a classroom. No matter what your budget or your interest there is a summer camp or program to meet your family’s financial and educational needs.

BUSINESS HP Grad Gets Taste of Success From Forbes By Sarah Bennett
FROM THE MENU
People Newspapers When Hunter Pond first opened the East Hampton Sandwich Co. in Snider Plaza in 2012, there’s no way he imagined winding up on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list just three years later. “It was pretty freaking exciting,” Pond said. “I was like, ‘Whoa, it’s getting real now.’” The restaurateur is only 27, but he’s already got three locations of fast-casual dining under his belt. Funny thing is, the Highland Park High School graduate never necessarily pictured himself opening a restaurant. After getting his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech, he enrolled in law school at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Even though visions of lobster rolls weren’t dancing in his head just yet, he knew he wanted to eventually open his own business. “My dad is an entrepreneur, and my mother owned her own business,” he said. “I have that blood in me.” Pond did a project on restaurants for an entrepreneur class in college, but it took what he calls “soul searching” to find out it was the industry for him. He eventually dropped out of law school in order to open shop. “I needed experience to run the ins and outs of a restaurant more than I needed a law degree,” he said. Today, the restaurant has ex-

panded to Fort Worth and Plano, and Pond and his business partner, Will Stroud, hope to open seven more in the next few years. With that rate of expansion, it’s no wonder his sandwich restaurants have caught national attention. Apart from the Forbes recognition, East Hampton also made a list of the “21 best sandwich shops in America” by Thrillist. Pond and his team credit a number of elements to this success: for one, Pond aims for operational efficiency from a business
standpoint; he tries to make sure he delegates tasks and prioritizes wisely to keep things running like clockwork. But then there’s the food. Director of operations Michael Guerrero — a fellow HPHS graduate — points to their high-quality ingredients and aesthetics as part of the appeal. “There was a void in the market for a higher-end sandwich,” he said. “We don’t use any deli meat. All of our proteins are registered in-house. Every sandwich we have has a specific sauce. With

social media and everyone taking pictures of everything, nice presentations are great along with the quality of our sandwiches.” In addition to building that reputation, Guerrero and Pond both know that the national attention their team and sandwiches are getting will help propel them to reach those lofty expansion goals. “We’re obviously a smaller company, and being involved with something in its growing stages is great to be a part of,” Guerrero said.
Condo Project Lets Residents Design Their Own Space By Todd Jorgenson
People Newspapers Who wants to create their own condo? There’s a project coming soon to Lomo Alto Drive that will let prospective Highland Park dwellers do just that. The plan for the single-building complex, called Lomo Alto Residences, will be to shell out 30,000 square feet over three floors, then finish out spaces to the size and specifications of the buyer’s choosing. The result will likely have between six and eight luxury flats on a half-acre site at the intersection of Lomo Alto and Fairway Avenue, but until all the space is bought, the exact number is un-
clear. “They can finish it out any way they want to,” said John Gourley, vice president of development group Madison Lomo Alto Condo L.P. “I like the idea of people being able to devise their own floor plan.” So do potential residents, who have already expressed interest even though construction hasn’t started yet. Gourley said the hope is to have the first move-in during the spring of 2016. The units will be between 2,700 and 4,000 square feet, with a 16-car underground parking garage and plenty of green space,” he said. The stucco-and-limestone exterior will include arched front windows
and patios with iron railings and wood-burning fireplaces. One of the developers is Joan Germany, who once owned a set of 13 apartments at the same site, then sold them and later repurchased the land after that complex was razed. Germany’s grandfather, Eugene, was mayor of Highland Park during the 1930s, and her father, Wilson, was mayor of University Park during the 1970s and has a city park named after him. The architect is Phillip Shepherd, who also designed the Mansion on Turtle Creek and the Crescent. “It will be the highest end in town,” Gourley said. “It’s very unique for everybody.”

LIVING WELL Former Anorexic Finds Catharsis in Memoir By Sarah Bennett
People Newspapers Jordan Knape was just 13 years old when she was admitted to the hospital five days before Christmas. Doctors told her parents she probably wouldn’t survive the night. Just a few days before that, Knape attended a Christmas party with her mother Jordan where everyone Knape raved about how beautiful she looked. Knape was dangerously thin and suffering from anorexia, a disease common among middle-school and high-school girls. “Eating disorders have big influences like environmental trauma and all sorts of different things,” Knape said. For her, family dynamics and genetics came into play. But the final straw was a camping trip with her middle school class from Highland Park. Overnight, the boys in her class had ranked every girl in terms of looks. Knape had won “best body.” “Basically, I lost all my girl friends that morning, because all of the sudden I was competition,” she said. “All these boys that I had grown up with weren’t really my friends. They were looking at me in a way I wasn’t ready for. It made me aware of the culture I was growing into that I wasn’t really feeling comfortable about. It was a big moment for me.” That memory inspired the title of Knape’s memoir on recov-

FROM THE BOOK
“
A big, flaming, red-hot spark for my eating disorder boomed on a weeklong school campout in the seventh grade. The boys in my class made a list of the girls in the class and rated them from top to bottom. They itemized them. They picked off their parts and pieces and they said who had the best what and where. Of course the list only involved looks — what else was there to talk about? Best face, best body, best eyes, best lips, best arms, best butt, best legs, best breasts. On the list there were three spots for each item: a Number 1, a Number 2, and a Number 3. So, out of all the seventh and eighth grade girls from our school, there could only be 3 arms, 3 lips, 3 legs. And one of them was best, and one of them was worst, but still visible, still noticeable as a number 2 or 3. I appeared on the list a lot, and so did one of my best friends, but my other closest friend did not appear on the list at all. So how was I supposed to process that? What was I supposed to say to her, and she to me?” — C H A PTER 2: B E ST B O DY
ering from her eating disorder, Best Body: Pretty Miserable Perfectness. Knape now works as a freelance writer in New York, but she was able to complete her recovery at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas — after spending her 14th birthday in the hospital. She began writing her story at age 18, while she was still technically recovering. “I finally fully recovered at 21, but it was still an open wound to some degree,” she said. “Once you have an eating disorder that’s as severe as mine was, it’s really
hard to recover. But I fully recovered, which is a huge gift, and I wanted to figure out why.” By 24, she had finished her book and was ready for the editing and publishing process. She credits family as a major motivator in her successful recovery, including her younger sister, August. “After years of seeing her work on her Best Body memoir, and after reading numerous versions, it is exciting to see her hard work in a tangible form,” said August, a Hockaday graduate. “Her story is powerful and
I hope it helps others to understand the true complexity of eating disorders and just how life-threatening they are.” Knape now runs a website to go along with her book, and she executed a soft launch in November so the book could be available on Amazon. She’s planning an official launch in late March. She also hopes to embark upon speaking engagements to encourage girls and families who might be struggling with the same thing. “Recovery comes in steps, so it takes a long time,” she said.
“It’s not something you want to play with.” In addition to a supportive family and strong medical community, Knape credits catching the problem early as a major factor in a successful recovery. “The reality is that the longer you suffer without treatment, the harder it is to recover,” she said. “At the end of the day, recovery is a totally personal choice. It’s just a decision to live and be healthy instead of be in denial and hiding. The benefit is that [after recovery] you can have this full life.”

his year, I am checking off each of the final 365 days of my 30s. Pre-teens were born after the millennium, notable celebrities who have “stayed the same age” since my youth are suddenly looking “older,” and gas is less than $2 a gallon ... wait, one of these things does not belong. So, time is marching on. There is no getting around or defeating aging. A family friend with Alzheimer’s was recently moved to a very nice nursing home but the place still comes off as an institution — a hospital rather than a home. My grandparents fought (with success) to live out their lives in their own home. Surrounded by the familiar, the comfortable, it’s what most prefer — especially at a time when one is vulnerable and physically weakened. I certainly hope by the time I am in need of late-life assistance, we have modified our elderly care to something less clinical and more cozy. But in the meantime, a nursing home
STEPHANIE M. CASEY or non-family assisted care is common. How do we make the situation better for our aged and infirm population? Netflix recommended a documentary to me with one excellent solution: music. Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory follows social worker Dan Cohen as he brings joy and life back to those who have given up, shut down or receded into themselves. After a small amount of research or discussion with any given patient, Dan builds a playlist catered to the individual, gifts them an iPod and sets the headphones in place. Drawling largely on favorite and popular tunes from a person’s formative teen and
young adult years — that indelible time of youth when music speaks your language, communicates feelings, and comforts like nothing else can — almost without exception, the people come alive ... singing, dancing, smiling, laughing. For some, it’s the first sign of life in years. The music taps deep into the person’s soul and suddenly they are rattling off stories, memories, happy times — even folks greatly affected by Alzheimer’s. What a beautiful concept! An escape down memory lane. A break from loneliness. An emotional jar shaking up the mind and often physical body, as well. I brought some music to the family friend mentioned earlier and watched this happen before my eyes. It’s amazing to see, and Dan is working to make his music “treatment” available in as many nursing homes as he can. Check out the documentary, and if there is anyone in your life who could benefit from such music therapy, give them this wonderful gift.

Special Contributor It’s Sunday morning and Debbie Chisolm is preaching to Central Christian Church’s congregation. Her husband, Steve, looks on. For nearly four years, the husband and wife have been co-pastors at Central Christian Church in Highland Park. Both raised in Southern Baptist homes, the couple married in college, headed to seminary, and then worked as missionaries overseas. OPPOSITES ATTRACT Before being chosen as missionaries, Steve and Debbie had to take some psychological tests with the Southern Baptist Convention. They quickly learned how different they are. “We hadn’t answered one question the same,” Debbie said. “Not one.” Debbie is an extrovert, a feeler, intuitive, and Steve is an introvert, a thinker, and judgment-based. “The psychiatrist told us, ‘If you can stay married — and that’s a big if — the two of you can minister to anybody,” Debbie recalled. Understanding each other’s opposite personalities is what allows them to work well together, they said. But it took awhile for them to get to today. After a negative experience

And we cried throughout the worship service.” After the service, Debbie set up a meeting with that church’s

Debbie explained her ministry history, which included youth, college, and youngadult ministry, and how she was considering giving it up to do something non-ministry-related — such as work at Home Depot. The church’s co-pastor presented Debbie with a different opportunity. WOMAN IN THE PULPIT “Teaching scripture and helping people to grow with
their own personal relationships with God — I just love that,” Debbie said. “But I never even thought about being a pastor because I was Baptist and I was a woman.” According to the Southern Baptist Convention’s website, the organization turns to the Bible regarding whether a woman can preach to men. 1 Timothy 2:12 is often cited. “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a
man; she must be silent,” the Bible states in that verse. However, Debbie argues that verse was meant for a specific church. The book of Timothy is a letter written by Paul to Timothy, Debbie said. Paul asked Timothy to watch over the church of Ephesus because women were worshipping by having sex. The verses surrounding 1 Timothy 2:12 make Debbie think it was for that one specific instance. “If you’re going to take out that verse that says women are not to teach men, then we also need to make sure that they wipe off their makeup before they come into the building,” she said. “Take off their jewelry, wipe off their perfume because all those things were said in the same context, but we look at those other things and

Temblors Put SMU Seismologists in Spotlight Research has been ongoing for many years By Sarah Bennett
People Newspapers Earthquakes across North Texas had residents all shaken up in January, but city officials from Dallas and Irving knew just who to call: the SMU seismology team. SMU’s seismology team, part of the Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth SciencHeather es, is made up of DeShon four leading faculty members and an assortment of other experts, including Brian Stump and Heather DeShon. SMU’s relationship to area municipalities in this way is not new — the department also looked into a slew of quakes in the Azle area in 2008, so it has been monitoring the region with seismographs ever since. But the activity in the last few months has caused the staff to rev up its efforts. “We have a history of putting seismograph stations out to monitor and perform studies with graduate students. Basically prior to Christmas, we noticed increases in Irving at a 2.5 level,” DeShon said. “We started talking
C O U R T E SY O F S M U
Monitor team installation members Mason Macphail and Chris Cain deploy seismographs in January. about putting more stations out to see what’s happening.” In late November, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit Irving. SMU deployed one extra seismograph then, before the city asked for more installations. Finally on Jan. 4, two earthquakes were enough to pique almost everyone’s curiosity. “We already were working with emergency managers to monitor the site around the city of Irving, but everything kicked into high gear when that 3.5 happened, followed hours later by a 3.6,” she said. In total, SMU will maintain 11
stations from this point continuously. But in addition to that, the quakes necessitated a total of 20 seismographic stations throughout the area. Many of those were temporary and equipped to log information for 10 days. “It did help us get the initial 10 days of aftershock,” DeShon said. “It’s incredibly valuable information.” SMU’s experts have been working in their particular areas of knowledge to analyze all the data and prepare a report for Dallas and Irving officials to review. On Feb. 6, Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings met with media to dis-
cuss SMU’s released report. “I want to say thank you to SMU. Their job is research and teaching of students, and their ability to move this quickly was a great thing,” Rawlings said. “There’s a question of what should these two cities have on an ongoing basis. Dr. Stump is one of the premier seismologists in the country and has a great reputation, so it’s fortunate to have that resource.” Normally, SMU’s team would prepare a peer-reviewed study — a process that takes longer time. The report requested by the municipalities was considered “pre-
liminary,” in that it was released prior to going through the full, peer-review process. “We had to issue a document pretty quickly after putting stations out,” DeShon said. “We will continue to monitor the situation. So scientifically, we just scratched the surface. Regardless of what transpires with what the cities ask us to do, we’ll just move forward like we have with every other sequence.” Though the study was not yet able to pinpoint an exact cause for the quakes nor “causative fault” — despite rumors of oil and gas interference — DeShon expects the findings to go through a proper peer-review assessment. “As the faculty at SMU, we live in Dallas. Most of us actually live in the city, so we want to help our community understand what’s going on,” DeShon said. “That’s one of our driving motivators.”

say, ‘Oh, well that was then and things have changed, but not this. This hasn’t changed.’ And you can’t do that. Either things have changed and that tradition isn’t around anymore or they haven’t.” After that conversation with Waxahachie’s co-pastor, Debbie and her family switched denominations and she preached her first sermon four months later. She is Central Christian Church’s first female pastor in its history. The church recently wel-
MILLS HONORED WITH YMCA’S SEAY LEADERSHIP AWARD Jim Mills received the 2015 Park Cities YMCA Charles E. Seay Outstanding Leadership Award. He received the honor at the organization’s Kick-Off Breakfast for the Annual Campaign. The award is given annually to a YMCA volunteer who exemplifies the organization’s ideals and demonstrates service. Carlos Mungia, the 2014 recipient, presented the award to Mills. comed Steve, who is a military colonel, back after a three-year stint spent mostly in Washington, D.C., where he served as director of the Air National Guard Chaplain Corps. Debbie and Steve alternate preaching each Sunday. They work together as equals, despite their genders. Central Christian Church also prides itself on welcoming anybody to its congregation — old, young, introverted, extroverted, straight, gay, black, white. All are welcome, just like Debbie was. “We welcome others as Christ welcomed us,” she said.

arch is a peculiar month. It has tornadoes but also the emergence of the first shoots of bulbs and leaves. It’s the solemnity of Lent but also the carnival atmosphere of spring break. It’s spring cleaning, a time when we can no longer avoid that dreaded tax workbook we find under that pile of clutter on the desk. Glumly we are reminded that nobody escapes death or taxes. For the Baby Boomers, that first part, death, is in the news. At least that is what Harvard physician Dr. Atul Gawande in his best-seller Being Mortal explores in a concise summation of “the medicalization” of death. More than 20 years ago, my father was totally incapacitated after several health incidents by a massive stroke. He had specific written instructions not to resuscitate after such an event, yet my brother the M.D. hopped on a plane to Atlanta and strode into his hospital room where he was making a horrible rattle on a ventilator and pulled the plug out to a horrified staff. “Sue me,” he challenged. When he confronted my uncharacteristically mute mother and attorney brother about why they had allowed this, they sat like the proverbial deer in the headlights. Doctors are trained only to prolong life, and in our “managed care system” that means the wishes of the dying are not necessarily heeded. It can mean unnecessary, extremely expensive procedures that are bankrupting our healthcare system and not improving longevity or quality of life. What are those dying wishes? People want to curtail suffering while retaining their mental functioning, not be a burden on their family, strengthen family ties, remember their lives with some sense of completion, and
LEN BOURLAND leave a legacy to loved ones. Today, few people want to end up dying on a ventilator, with tubes, in a noisy impersonal hospital with no one respecting his or her wishes. Yet this is increasingly exactly what happens, even if people have expressed otherwise. Once a person enters an institution, he or she is in real jeopardy of losing the one thing people value above all else: free will.
"MO ST PE O P L E WOUL D R AT H E R TA L K A B O UT T H E IR SE X L IVE S O R CL E AN TO IL ETS B EFORE H AV ING ‘ THE TAL K ’ A B O UT THEIR L IV E S ENDING." There’s hospice or palliative care, but “99 percent of those facing hospice understand they are dying but 100 percent hope they are not.” In a brilliant treatise, Dr. Gawande explains how to direct end-of-life care and extend quality of life, which need not diminish quantity. He has four questions that must be gently posed to the elderly frail, the terminally ill, and those who face life-threatening and possibly debilitating surgery.
WORSHIP SERVICES Do you want to be resuscitated if your heart stops? Do you want aggressive treatments like intubation and a ventilator? Do you want antibiotics (pneumonia has often been called the “old person’s friend”)? Do you want to be fed intravenously once you can no longer eat on your own? The yardstick when his physically active father — also an M.D. — was faced with the prospect of life in a wheelchair with diminished capacity if he decided to go into a dangerous surgery surprised him: “As long as I can watch football and eat chocolate ice cream.” His father hated football, but this image enabled his family to figure out how to proceed with various end-of-life procedures. Most people would rather talk about their sex lives or clean toilets before having “the talk” about their lives or those of loved ones ending. Yes I have a will, but not an end-oflife plan for dying. It’s the least I can do for my children. So I closed the book, went to church, and got the funeral workbook. It’s much more than the hymns, scripture, and burial-versus-cremation scenario. There are pages for important names and phone numbers for attorney, CPA, executor, banker, doctors, relatives and friends. There are places to find passwords, keys, codes, and documents. There’s a place to write your own obituary. Obviously you can do this without a church workbook. I wrote down Gawande’s four questions, and my response to all four is no, if brain damaged. It’s now in my computer where I’m informed I should update it every year. Like when I do that other inevitable sobering task: taxes. Len Bourland can be reached at len@lenbourland.com.
