D

uring nearly a quarter-century of newspapering in West Texas and Louisiana, I seldom, if ever, managed to return home to Dallas for Thanksgiving.

My holiday tradition, especially during my single years, involved seeking out an invitation so I could enjoy turkey, stuffing, and pie at a different table each year.

Only once do I recall settling for the Thanksgiving buffet at the Golden Corral.

December traditions are another matter.

Mom likes having everyone home for Christmas and still has a knack for making it worthwhile.

Whereas the December of my childhood was about the buildup to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the Christmas of my adulthood has become a multiday affair.

Mom doesn’t quite reenact the “12 Days of Christmas” song, but Decembers have brought an intermittent series of celebrations. As schedules and travel plans of scattered relatives and close friends allow, she plans another gathering. There’s always feasting, and often gifts.

But it is possible to overstay.

One year, while still employed in Baton Rouge, I made the mistake of staying too long and found myself on New Year’s Eve waiting for midnight while my parents, already in their pajamas, began snoring on either side of the room.

Some traditions are worth preserving.

Some aren’t.

After the tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001, a softball team of New York City police officers and firefighters began taking their games on the road and picking up new players along the way.

The team travels to a different city every year to meet up with the other first responders and make a donation in honor of fallen police and firefighters, according to dpdbeat.com.

What started with a few NYPD and FDNY personnel now includes military members and first responders from cities the team has visited.

This year’s destination: Dallas.

BEWARE OF CHARITY SCAMS

Victims of Hurricane Harvey still need help and many North Texans want to contribute.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends that those who choose to give do so cautiously.

“We have already seen Dallas residents show solidarity to the families of victims of Hurricane Harvey,” said Phylissia Landix, vice president of public relations and communications for BBB North Central Texas. “But, if you do not check out the organizations prior to donating, you could lose money, or worse be the victim of ID theft.”

BBB offers these tips: Verify the name. Scammers may intentionally select a misleading name.

Never click on links on unfamiliar websites, texts, or emails. Links may go to a look-a-like websites seeking personal financial information.

Get proof of non-profit status. Forprofit companies may pose as charitable organizations or mislead donors about how they use the funds that they collect.

Be careful with crowdfunding appeals.

It is safest to give directly to individuals that you know personally.

PRESTON CENTER GARAGE COULD GET FUNDING

Councilwoman puts project dollars in Nov. 7 bond proposals

STREETS — $43.8 MILLION

Two of the largest street projects include a $5.5 million petition project on Holly Hill Drive and a $3 million reconstruction of Webb Chapel Road from Silverton Drive to Northaven Road. Preston Hollow projects include resurfacing Lovers Lane near Inwood Village; University Boulevard from Inwood Road to Eastern Avenue; and Hillcrest Road from Park Lane to Walnut Hill Lane.

PARKS — $1.6 MILLION

Six parks in District 13 would see renovations or upgrades to playground equipment, athletic facilities, and overall improvements to the grounds. Preston Hollow-area projects include playground expansion, shade structure, and site development at Bluffview Park; a new swingset and park furnishings at Jamestown Park; and a full replacement of the softball backstop and bleachers at Walnut Hill Park.

Dallas’ billion-dollar bond package, if approved Nov. 7, would address several projects in Preston Hollow, providing, most notably, $10 million to help tear down and replace a much-debated 60-yearold parking garage at Preston Center.

There’s not yet a price estimate for the project.

“If we can’t get it done, the money can be instead used for streets.”

Jennifer Staubach Gates Nor is there an actual set plan about what the new parking structure would look like, said District 13 Dallas City Council member Jennifer Staubach Gates.

“It’s been a challenge because the community was like, ‘I want a garage and a park would be great,’ and the stakeholders that immediately surround it were like, ‘What would that do [to business] during construction, people wouldn’t [want to] park underneath, and they want a surface lot,’” she said.

“So we’re trying to marry those.”

District 13, which zigzags North Dallas between Interstate 635 and Northwest Highway – and as low as Mockingbird Lane in some neighborhoods, would see

about $56 million if all 10 bond propositions pass.

While the billion dollar package tackles myriad of city issues, from streets to housing needs, Gates’ district only has projects in the streets, parks, and flood control propositions.

About 18 percent of its total proposed dollars will go toward what’s been described as an eyesore in Preston Hollow.

The parking garage at Preston Center is one of several projects in Proposition A, which is earmarked for street projects.

Council members were given discretionary funds during bond deliberations to allot as they preferred.

Gates said she could have split the dollars into the economic development or drainage bond proposals but decided to put them all into streets to avoid losing some of the money should one of the other bonds not pass.

“I know I used my economic development dollars toward the parking garage because that’s an economic driver,” Gates said, explaining why she allocated discretionary funding to Prop A instead of toward economic development, Prop I, which could also have been used for affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, or transit-oriented development.

If Prop A passes, the North Central Texas Council of Government (NCTCOG) plans to match funding for the parking garage and has identified an additional $20 million in private investors for the project, said Karla

Weaver, project manager for the NCTCOG. Gates said the next step, after the bond election, is to meet with stakeholders to see if they can come up with a solid design and funding plan for the garage.

“If we can’t get it done, the money can be instead used for streets,” she said.

According to preliminary plans, the changes to the Preston Center garage will double the capacity of the current garage, add street-level parking, and create a pedestrian-friendly environment.

A surface-level park would sit on top of the new garage.

Weaver said Walker Consultants has been hired to reconvene with regional stakeholders to hash out more accurate specifications for the project. Walker, she said, was behind the Houston parking garage and community park Midtown. Midtown required $18 million for the parking garage and $14 million for a green space and restaurant above.

Beyond the money set aside for the Preston Center garage, the majority of dollars spent in District 13 will focus on street repairs — something Gates called a top priority across the city due to deferred maintenance.

District 13 doesn’t have any projects in the City Facilities or Cultural and Performing Arts bond propositions, which includes things such as constructing a new storage facility for mosquito abatement and adding ADA restrooms to the Bath House Cultural Center.

NOVEMBER 7 PROPOSITIONS Ten propositions totaling $1.05 billion are backed by current revenue and will not require a property tax rate hike.

Projects include nearly $2 million for culvert and channel improvements in the Preston Hollow Channel east of Edgemere Road to Desco Drive. A drainage-relief system also will be designed and constructed in the 100-year-old Bachman Creek floodplain near the Rexford Drive and Shorecrest Drive area.

November Election To Decide Dallas County Schools’ Future ‘No’ vote would close bus service

This month, Dallas County voters will determine the fate of an embattled taxing entity that provides bus services for several independent school districts in North Texas.

Highland Park ISD and Dallas ISD are weighing their options on how to proceed if voters shutter Dallas County Schools, the recipient of a one-cent property tax charged to those living within Dallas County.

Dallas ISD officials have prepared a plan for operating an in-house bus system should the agency be dissolved, but HPISD administrators are a little less certain of how they’d accommodate 24 special needs students reliant on the service.

In addition to property tax revenue, Dallas County Schools (DCS) also receives revenue from its customer districts to cover the cost for bus service. DISD spends about $50 million a year for the service, while Highland Park uses about $241,000 from its special education grant.

DCS took in just more than $18 million in property taxes in 2016, according to tax records.

HPISD Communications Director Jon Dahlander said the district is still searching for a Plan B. “There are very few vendors who can provide this type of service,” he said. “We’ll obviously await the outcome of the election and adjust.”

Should voters elect to end DCS, a dissolution committee will take over through the end of the school year, giving districts some time to figure out their next steps.

Dallas ISD, which serves just fewer than 30,000 students districtwide with the bus service, has 58 bus routes that run through Pres-

ton Hollow, said Scott Layne, DISD deputy superintendent of operations.

Layne said the district has come up with three options should DCS be dissolved: an in-house bus line, a service contract with another provider, or a hybrid in-house/contract scenario.

“We’ve looked at preliminary numbers, and we believe that we can operate an inhouse program for what we have budgeted,” he said.

The reason the in-house system would work, Layne said, is because the district wouldn’t be strapped for the initial capital in-

vestment of buying buses — a close to $100 million expense.

“There’s been a lot of talk about why did Dallas ISD get involved with the bill, and the very simple and true answer to that is we did what we had to do to protect our assets in the event that [DCS] no longer existed,” Layne said.

Dallas ISD was one of the several critical voices in Austin when the fate of DCS was being considered.

Dallas Superintendent Michael Hinojosa openly expressed dissatisfaction with DCS to the State Senate Education Committee, citing ridership decline from 51,000 in 2012 to 28,000 in the current school year. He said the cost of the program per student continued to rise from $800 to $1,600 in those same years.

DISD board member Edwin Flores slammed the agency for its 68-percent ontime performance rate, which Layne noted has improved this year.

Layne added that should voters elect to keep DCS, that doesn’t necessarily mean DISD would continue to use the service.

“We just want to take care of our kids and do it in the most cost-effective means possible, and I think I’ll leave it at that,” he said.

DCS did not return several calls and emails seeking comment on this story.

Texas Voters To Consider Seven Amendments Tax break for disabled veterans among proposals

Texas voters will have the final say this November on seven proposed state constitutional amendments. They range in topic from creating tax exemptions for disabled veterans and first responders to allowing banks and financial institutes to hold raffles to promote savings.

Proposition 1, backed by the Texas Senate during the legislative session, would give disabled veterans or their surviving spouses

a property-tax exemption for homes donated by a charity for less than market value.

The Texas House Research Organization (THRO), which penned supporting and opposing arguments for all of the propositions, said the amendment would fix a legal anomaly that can increase the financial burden on a partially disabled veteran who paid some amount of the cost of a donated home.

Also favored by state lawmakers is Proposition 6, which would allow the Texas Legislature to create a property-tax exemption for the surviving spouses of police officers, firefighters, and other first responders killed

in the line of duty.

In its short criticism of the amendment, THRO said, “it would continue a pattern of giving tax exemptions to specialized groups when instead the Legislature should focus its efforts on reducing the aggregate property-tax burden.”

Proposition 2 would ease restrictions on borrowing against home equity in the state.

While THRO representatives said the change would adjust the state’s home equity lending framework to help make loans more accessible and give consumers more choice, there was disagreement about whether it

would raise or lower costs for borrows and concern it would roll back important consumer protections.

The proposed amendment was championed by Cornerstone Credit Union League (CCUL), which said it and Proposition 7, which will enable financial institutions to conduct promotional activities to advertise savings, would both be victories for credit unions.

CCUL worked with other financial institution trades and the Texas Association of Realtors, which has opposed changes in the past, to craft the proposal.

Other ballot measures would place a limit on how long an appointee whose term had expired could continuing serving in office; require courts to notify the state attorney general of any constitutional challenges to state laws; and allow teams to capitalize on the large and supportive crowds at sporting events to increase funds available to their charitable programs.

ARTIST JOINS ILLUSTRATORS HALL OF FAME

Forbes’ work includes presidential postage stamps, Olympic images

Time, Sports Illustrated, the NFL, the PGA, the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea all have this much in common: They’ve each featured artwork by Bart Forbes.

Forbes is a North Dallas-based illustrator and painter who has created masterful works of art for a list of clients that includes magazines, sports-team owners, corporations, and the U.S. Postal Service.

During the past 40 years, Forbes has painted his way through a suc-

cessful career that did not go unnoticed. This year, members of the New York Society of Illustrators inducted Forbes into their Hall of Fame.

“After having done it all these years, I was really surprised that the Society of Illustrators decided to put me in,” Forbes said.

The New York Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in America. The Society’s HOF was started in 1958 with Norman Rockwell as the first inductee and remains a fairly small and exclusive club with just more than 200 members.

According to the society’s website, artists are elected by former presidents of the society and are chosen based on their body of work and the impact it has made on the field of illustration.

“It is a real honor to think that they would value my work that much because it is a small hall of fame,” Forbes said.

The road to becoming a celebrated artist began when Forbes was a young boy.

He remembers drawing on any blank page he could find, and he can’t remember a time when he didn’t love to draw.

He pursued his love for drawing at the University of North Carolina and graduated with a B.A. in Art in 1961. After a brief time in the military, Forbes returned to his passion and enrolled in the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Advice from one of his professors brought Forbes to Dallas in 1965 to begin his career in illustration. The advent of overnight postal service allowed him to remain based in Dallas while still acquiring clients in other parts of the country. Soon, Forbes was widely sought after for high-profile projects.

With incredible modesty, Forbes recalls his many projects from over the years that range from album covers and U.S. Presidential postage stamps to the Olympics and the Dallas Cowboys. And even though he has earned a place in the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, an honor he calls a “lifetime achievement award”, he isn’t putting up his paint brushes any time soon.

With his focus more on gallery painting now, Forbes can be found in his home studio transforming blank canvases into beautiful landscapes, always searching for his favorite painting: the next one.

People Newspapers It’s weird to sit in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom crying into your coffee in front of 320 other guests, unless you’re at a Momentous Institute event, listening to devastating stories of children who walk the bright halls of Momentous and go home, often to darkness and difficulties.

The story of a child’s abuse that Michelle Kinder, the executive director of the institute, told at the Changing the Odds dinner on Sept. 27 was difficult to listen to. The 7-year-old, struggling in school and benefiting from therapy sessions at Momentous, had been systematically traumatized and subsequently abandoned.

It’s not always like that. Many children at the Oak Cliff lab school run by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas have stable lives and loving homes. But 85 percent of Momentous students qualify for free lunches;

When the 3–11-year-olds at Momentous get angry or upset, or can’t think through a problem, they know how to handle it.

They’ve learned breathing exercises and practice mindfulness. They use toy-based cop-ing techniques. They know what part of their brain is firing up and can point to their amygdalas — even the 3-year-olds can.

The results are clear. When students understand and can control their reactions and emotions, they perform better; they don’t act out in school and get written off as “problems” by teachers unequipped to understand them; their brain development and their life trajectory don’t get written by traumatic experiences from early

childhood. And at Momentous, 98 percent graduate high school on time and 82 percent pursue higher education — numbers unprecedented for the demographics the school serves.

After Kinder left the stage to a standing ovation, and everyone tried to make it look like they weren’t crying, Richie Davidson, a neuroscientist, shared research on meditation. His address kicked off the annual Changing the Odds Conference.

The conference expands Momentous’ reach to children who will never attend the school or the therapy sessions in Dallas and forces difficult conversations around what to do with underserved children.

“Dallas continues to be one of the most segregated cities in the country,” Kinder said. “We know that African-American and Latino children are disproportionately affected by poverty, toxic stress, and trauma, and we know that toxic stress and trauma literally change children’s brains. But, please hear this … intervention also changes children’s brains.”

That’s why Momentous Institute events are never about solipsistic “who’s who’s” or perfunctory donation asks. They’re difficult. They’re uncomfortable. And they’re important.

People Newspapers A heavy rainfall on Oct. 3 didn’t stop Preston Hollow residents from celebrating National Night Out (NNO).

In fact, more than 300 people turned up to mingle with neighbors and local police in Brad Griffith’s vineyard/backyard – the designated location since the event be-

gan five years ago. (Disclosure: There was a tent.)

In conjunction with NNO, an array of area food hubs had samples set out for residents to enjoy. Respectively titled “Taste of Lovers,” the annual soirée, organized by the Briarwood Crime Watch Neighborhood Association, brought everyone together for an evening of community camaraderie.

“It’s really a way of getting people together, because we believe that at this juncture any decrease in crime is as much about neighbors knowing and looking out for neighbors as it is police patrols and locking your door – that sort of thing,” said Dorie Cranshaw, president of the neighborhood’s crime watch association.

Mayor Mike Rawlings, Councilwoman Jennifer Gates, Commissioner Elba Gar-

cia, DISD Trustee Dustin Marshall, and Deputy Police Chief Catrina Shead were also in attendance.

Shead addressed the crowd with praises of Briarwood’s event.

“This is the premier National Night Out event,” Shead said. “I ran into a couple of people who said, ‘This is my first time ever coming to a National Night Out event,’ and I said, ‘Well you came to the best.’ ”

The festival supports Sons of the Flag, a nonprofit that funds research and education into treatment for burn survivors.

The attack is the subject of the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which is based on the book, 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi.

Each film screening will conclude with a veteran or expert guest speaker who will detail what the events from the movie were really like. Speakers will include Green Beret veterans, a crewmember from a former top-secret research submarine, a military historian, and a film expert.

“It’s really not about the film — it’s about the speaker, it’s about the testimony, the ‘thank you’ for their service. We can learn from these veterans what transpired for real,” said Ryan Parrott, founder of Sons of the Flag.

“What better way to actually see a film — for them [the audience] to actually hear from someone who was there, boots on the ground, to learn what really transpired and what it’s really like,” Parrott said. “You know what is the who, what, when, where, why, or the look, the feel, the sounds, the smells, the senses of everything … and really put context behind the message that was delivered in the movie.”

According to Parrott, the festival has raised an average of $150,000 each year.

Revisionism is keeping us from resolving current issues What a fall! Back-to-school dovetailed with spectacles of Mother Nature – the wonder of the eclipse and the horror of hurricanes brought us together despite our divisive human nature.

We head into November with holidays that usually unite us, but they may be freighted with division this year.

Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. “Thank you for your service” has now replaced the spitting and name-calling of troops during Vietnam. Now another group in uniform, the police, often experience that.

Having spent two weeks mesmerized by Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War series on PBS, I’ve been amazed at how viscerally I was transported back to the ‘60s and the latent emotions that resurfaced. I was as furious with LBJ after the Tet offensive episode as I was when I was a co-ed in 1968.

Psychologists have long recognized that symbols, statues, a word, a flag, or a song can trigger rage. When emotions kick in, it is very difficult to de-escalate. That goes for audiences, protestors, soldiers, fans, or cops. But de-escalate we must.

during the national anthem to a) protest police brutality against blacks, b) raise awareness about racism with the rise of white supremacists, c) protest Trump, d) exercise their first amendment right, or e) all of the above. The correct answer is any and all, depending on the person.

Here’s another. The Civil War in 1860–65

was fought for a) states’ rights vs. federal rights, b) state banks and easy credit vs. Northeastern big banks and “hard money,” c) manufacturing interests vs. agrarian interests, d) slavery vs. abolition, or e) all of the above. Again all are correct, although many would say only “d.”

Most rebel army soldiers were non-slaveowning yeoman farmers. It is not a given that their descendants are white supremacists. Or still hate Yankees. Or farm.

It’s probably time to re-run Ken Burns’ enlightening series on the Civil War from more than 20 years ago. It was complicated. So was Vietnam. So is racism today. So is policing.

Racism still exists for lots of ethnicities. We have also never been more of a melting pot, for which I am thankful.

Slavery is not just about the color of a person’s skin. It’s also about man’s inhumanity to man, power, and greed — and it still goes on today. It’s called human trafficking.

Also, crazies are out there and they have guns. Help, police! Let’s get unified and take a knee for these, because there won’t be another eclipse to unite us again until 2024.

ESD PREPARES TO MERGE CAMPUSES $15M Perot family gift will help build new lower school

Episcopal School of Dallas celebrates progress toward building new lower school.

The Episcopal School of Dallas plans to break ground in late spring on a new lower school building, a project which will unite the school’s lower and upper schools on one main campus.

The news follows the recent announcement of a record-breaking $15 million donation from the Perot family to help move the lower school to the heart of the Merrell Road campus.

“One campus, one community,” Nita Clark, who co-chairs the private school’s fundraising campaign, told a bustling crowd of students, family, and alumni at ESD parents’ annual Fri-

day Night Fiesta on Sept. 22.

The endowment from the Perot family is the largest gift made to ESD since its founding in 1974.

The new lower school will open intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social connections to the middle and upper schools, administrators said.

Plans for the new facility reveal grade-level homerooms connected by shared collaboration spaces known as “neighborhoods,” which were designed to help solidify and define the identity of each grade.

The lower school also will house commons areas on each floor, a library, and media and design zones. A community staircase will anchor the building and provide a view of a

fresh-air amphitheater that will serve as ESD’s only outdoor stage.

Administrators said the venue allows informal access at recess for impromptu theatrical exploits but also serves as a wonderful natural setting for small-scale performances such as string concerts, poetry readings, and class plays.

Chelle Wabrek, head of the lower school, said the new building won’t pave the way for more students, saying “we’re designed to be small.” Instead, she said, the changes would foster better relationships between students.

In the echo of the school’s drumline, Clark announced at the Friday Night Fiesta that more than 70 percent of the $36.5 million campaign to build the lower school had been raised — news that was followed with roaring

applause and the rustle of the varsity cheerleading team’s silver pom-poms.

The excitement continued with the news that Lisa and Kenny Troutt had committed $1.5 million for an endowment to maintain the ESD athletic fields named for them. An anonymous donor also made a $250,000 challenge grant to the annual “Above and Beyond” fund.

“The world needs ESD graduates who are well prepared to lead with intelligence, faith, and character,” head of school Meredyth M. Cole said. “[The donors] each deserve special recognition for their incredible efforts to ensure our gifted faculty and staff have the resources required to ignite lives of purpose for our students and graduates.”

Former University of Chicago VP Leads Hockaday Coleman embraces K–12 school’s community feel

Special Contributor For the first time in more than two decades, Karen Warren Coleman finds herself back amongst primary and secondary school students.

Last fall, she decided to leave her job as vice president of campus and student life at the University of Chicago to become the 13th head of the Hockaday School, effective July 1.

A celebration was recently held to mark the occasion.

“While I’m new, and still feel very new, this feels like community to me,” Coleman said. “I feel like I’m

part of the community. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The transition has been a long time in the making. Coleman accepted the head-of-school position in November 2016. Over the ensuing seven months, she split her time between Chicago and Dallas, simultaneously wrapping up her university teaching responsibilities while preparing for the next challenge.

While Coleman did not have any previous ties to Dallas or Hockaday, she was familiar with the school through her work with college admissions offices. The school’s reputation is well deserved, she said.

“Hockaday is really a leader in girls’ education — you know about them,” she said. “It’s a place you want to be part of because something very special is happening here.”

Coleman said one of the things she enjoys most about education is being able to spend time with students and help them as they come to know the world and themselves.

She was motivated to take the new job because she wanted to work with students at a younger age and developmental level. She was particularly intrigued by the Hockaday opportunity because working with students in grades K–12, she would

get to be involved in their entire journey.

As head of school, Coleman said, her overriding goal is to make sure each girl is prepared for the world they will enter after graduation.

While she raves about Hockaday’s “intellectually rich environment” she said the keys to the school’s continued success are to be self-critical, forward-thinking, and innovative in how it approaches teaching and learning. According to her, that doesn’t necessarily come from any special modality, but rather from working closely with faculty and staff to ensure they are being responsive to the changing needs of every student.

“The work we do in education really transforms lives. I take that responsibility very seriously,” Coleman said. “But how we deliver that education might look different as the years go on. We need to be attentive to that and never close ourselves off from wanting to be curious, ourselves, as educators.”

Coleman says she has really enjoyed working with and getting to know faculty staff and alumni who share a similar passion for education.

She and her family have now moved into a home in the Hockaday neighborhood and are having fun getting to know Dallas.

“Being here has just affirmed everything that I heard about this place. Frankly, I feel like I have the best job.”

Christ the King Principal Honored O’Sullivan boosts Dallas scholarships

Patrick O’Sullivan, principal of Christ the King Catholic School in Dallas, was one of three Catholic elementary school principals named as winners of the 2017 National Distinguished Principals Award.

The National Association of Elementary School Principals presented the awards during a two-day celebration in October in Washington, D.C. “National recognition for our principals is well deserved and gratifying,” said Annette Jones, assistant director of leadership development for the National Catholic Educational Association.

O’Sullivan wants Catholic schools available for every child.

Since becoming principal in 2012, he has increased scholarships at his and other Dallas Catholic schools.

Astronaut Tom Jones Recruits Students For Mars Exploration

NASA veteran inspires Lamplighter third-grade, kindergarten students NASA astronaut Tom Jones wasn’t much older than the Lamplighter School students he spoke to recently when he set his heart on someday reaching the stars.

Jones told the third-graders and kindergartners attending an assembly that he had come “to talk about his journey to space and your journey to space.”

“You are the future explorers of the red planet.”

Tom Jones His began at age 10, when he was living in Baltimore, Maryland, and had the opportunity to visit a rocket factory. After observing a rocket being built, he realized how “cool it would be to ride on one someday,” he told students.

Jones also credited his grandmother for helping to spark his interest in space travel when she gave him a book titled Space Flight when he was 5 years old. At the time the book was published in the 1950s, there

were no actual pictures of people in space, just paintings, he said. Yet the book stimulated his interest in the possibility of space travel — and still sits on his bookshelf today.

Education played a key part in reaching his goal, Jones told the students. He studied at the U.S. Air Force Academy and later earned a doctorate in planetary sciences from the University of Arizona.

Following six years of service as a pilot with the U.S. Air Force, Jones began what became a seven-year application process with NASA. He received two “rejection postcards” from NASA before submitting a third application, receiving an invitation to interview, and finally enrolling in astronaut school.

“What was the lesson learned from this process?” he asked the students.

“Never give up!” students shouted.

Jones has spent 53 days in space over four missions, the first at age 35.

need new “talented, motivated, inspired explorers.”

Many hands went up when he asked, “Do I have any volunteers?”

NASA’s mission to Mars will likely take place in the 2030s, Jones told them.

“You will all be the right age in 25 years,” he said. “You are the future explorers of the red planet.”

Hockaday’s mindfulness initiative, called a social emotional learning (SEL) program, integrates mindfulness practice into the school day to help bring lasting inner calm,

So far, the response has been positive.

“Challenges with concentration and ADHD are both growing issues,” Rhodus said. “It seems evident that our contemporary culture is filled with reasons to be distracted.”

With even the youngest facing constant stimulus from media, communications, and other sources, “it makes sense that finding attention and focus would be more challenging than before,” Rhodus said.

Sunshine said mindfulness benefits brain health. “In a school setting, mindfulness has been shown to not only promote better focus and concentration, but also decrease stress and anxiety, increase empathy for others and improve self-management and self-awareness,” he said.

The yoga center has worked with several area schools to bring this approach to the learning environment.

ulti-family apartments are experiencing a greater volume of package deliveries as their residents increasingly go online to shop for clothing, electronics, groceries, and other products.

Lincoln Property Company-managed, upscale Armstrong at Knox, located on the edge of Highland Park, receives 585 packages a month for 165 apartments, while a much larger Lincoln property, the 740-unit La Villita in Irving, gets a whooping 1,800. With the holiday spike, volume averages 21,000– 24,000 packages a year.

Residents with busy lives want the convenience of picking up their packages any time of day or night, property managers say, and the market is responding to fill that demand.

“I never miss a package,” said resident Doug Bardoff, “because I can pick it up 24 hours a day.”

Carriers with packages for UPS, FEDEX, USPS, and Amazon type in a code and the package’s apartment number on a computer screen, scroll down to find the recipient’s name, and select a locker size. When the locker shuts, an email with an assigned user name is transmitted to the package recipient.

“It’s the coolest technology,” said fellow resident Joe Paglino, a salesman for Reverie Sleep Systems.

“You get notified right away when the package is delivered and every day after if you get pretty busy and forget.”

Another benefit for renters: With locker systems taking apartment complexes out of the package delivery business, leasing agents have more time to focus on residents’ other needs, property managers said.

The system creates efficiencies for carriers, as well, which translate into quicker tenant deliveries. UPS deliveryman Thomas Boughnon, whose route includes La Villita, said, “Before I could deliver 20–25 packages an hour; now I can do 20–25 in 15 minutes.”

Thomas added, “Now that I’ve gotten used to the locker package delivery system, I definitely would make that a criteria for my next apartment.”

Damage Costs Tenants’ Deposit Judge rejects PH renters’ claim

Damaged landscaping was the focus of Preston Hollow tenant lawsuit.

Dr. Craig Schwimmer, founder of the Snoring Center, and his wife, Shanon, expected to get back much of the $16,000 security deposit they paid before moving into a million-dollar Preston Hollow rental. They didn’t.

After fulfilling their lease term and giving a 30-day notice to vacate the property, the Schwimmers moved out and waited for the homeowner to refund their deposit, half of which covered their pets.

Instead, the homeowners claimed excessive damage to the property and returned about 30 percent to the couple. So the Schwimmers hired an attorney.

Nearly two years and tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees later, a judge has ruled against the Schwimmers in a case that could offer lessons for renters and landlords alike.

The judge found the Schwimmers didn’t live up to their obligations to maintain the estate’s landscaping or address the piles of dog feces left in the yard.

Catherine Keith, an attorney with Darrell W. Cook & Associates who specializes in landlord-tenant litigation and represented the homeowner in the above case, said she cannot stress enough to clients the importance of communication and documentation.

Keith suggests both the tenant and the landlord walk through the premises prior to signing the lease and note the condition of the home on a checklist and take photographs of the property that can be emailed to the respective party — and then repeat when moving out.

time stamp that everyone agrees is valid and legal,” Keith said.

Preston Hollow homeowners Olayinka and Akinola Ogundipe used photographic evidence in the courtroom to defend their right to a portion of the deposit they withheld from their tenants. The pictures and specific clauses in their lease agreements helped them win a complete defense victory, including their attorney’s fees.

Their photographs detailed extensive damage to woodwork near windows likely due to an animal clawing or jumping on them, and neglected and overgrown landscaping that cost thousands of dollars to repair.

While the renter’s lawyer argued normal wear and tear for both issues and called the damages paltry, a judge ultimately sided with the landlord because the lease clearly outlined the tenants’ obligation to upkeep the landscaping and pool, and it included a pet addendum.

Experts agree that having such documented provisions that go beyond a standard lease are an important tool landlords need to use.

For example, to avoid having a tenant call in frivolous repairs, it is suggested that a lease provision is added that requires renters to pay a deductible first. Experts also say a worthy investment any landlord can make is conducting a background check that includes looking to see if an applicant has been sued in small claims court.

For the renter, Keith suggested getting in writing what a landlord considers to be outside normal wear and tear, and how much he would charge for damages as small as burnedout light bulbs or holes in the wall from hanging pictures, up to extensive carpet damage or broken doors and windows.

Many buyers target lots, plan to build open-concept dream homes

Real estate activity in Park Cities and Preston Hollow neighborhoods has begun to stabilize after a welcomed pickup during the first half of the year.

What that means for sellers is a seasonal slowdown, said Dave Perry-Miller agent Julie Provenzano.

“Upticks don’t really happen around the holidays in the luxury niche,” Provenzano said.

While the price per square foot for homes in the Park Cities and Preston Hollow saw strong growth this summer, both areas saw decreases in September, according to market numbers. Both areas also saw large upticks in the number of days properties sat on the market.

“This is a great time to remind [sellers] that buyers set [sales pric-

es for] their homes, they don’t,” Provenzano said, advising homeowners to wait out the new year before listing. Using what she says is gut instinct from more than 20 years in the industry, she anticipates “a really strong first quarter in 2018.”

“I don’t think we will see prices going down,” she said, “but we will see them stabilizing.”

Because trends are now leaning toward custom homes that are light, bright, and open-concept, Weeks said in order to be competitive, owners of homes built 10 to 15 years ago will need to refresh the properties before selling.

“Buyers are very sophisticated and very particular,” Weeks said.

Dallas Gets Third Blue Star Marker Pickens Hospice dedicates memorial The T. Boone Pickens Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 12477 Merit Drive, now has a Blue Star Memorial marker – only the third one in the city.

“This is a living tribute that honors all of the men and women who served, are serving or will serve in the United States armed forces,” said Tim Mallad, CEO of Presbyterian Communities and Services, which owns the center.

During the dedication ceremony in October, Mallad thanked the Designers and Diggers Garden Study Club for raising the funds for the marker and club member Harriet Gibbs for suggesting the hospice as its location.

The Blue Star Memorial Program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted this program and created a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Council members envisioned a “ribbon of living memorial plantings traversing every state.”

The first year after the program was adopted, seven states placed markers.

By the end of 1949, more than 33 states were participating and more than 16,000 miles were dedicated, with large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers placed at appropriate locations along the way.

The Blue Star became an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well as in churches and businesses. It is a symbol people still recognize.

Housing inventory is still under the six-month supply that is needed for a normal housing market, which means there are not enough homes for sale to satisfy the number of buyers in the market. This is good news for homeowners who have gained equity as their home values have increased.

3. The process will be quicker. Today’s competitive environment has forced buyers to do all they can to stand out from the crowd, including getting preapproved for their mortgage financing. This makes the entire selling process much faster. According to Ellie Mae, the time to close a loan has dropped to 43 days.

Christine McKenny never stops. She even uses the time she devotes to a morning walk to return calls. She stops only to greet friends and clients along the way.

“I like doing at least two things at once,” she said.

BEAR FEAT: 14 CROSS COUNTRY TITLES Ursuline looks to add another championship

I

t ’s taken more than fancy footwork to put Ursuline on the brink of history among girls cross country programs.

The Bears will head to the TAPPS state meet seeking their 15th title, which would tie a record. And along with arguably their most talented squad ever, they’ll bring a tradition of hard work and consistency that’s unmatched among their private-school peers.

Ursuline has won the past two TAPPS Division 1 crowns, and four of the past five. The team has never finished outside the top three at the state meet.

Three runners already have multiple gold medals, and this team as a whole has finished with the best times of any squad in school history.

“They’re really accomplished, and they’re going to be really tough to beat,” said Ursuline head coach Jonathan Moody.

Ursuline already was a strong program when Moody took over a decade ago. But he’s spearheaded an effort to bolster participation in the sport. This year, the Bears have 69 athletes running at all levels, including many new-

comers.

“We’ve created a really positive culture,” Moody said. “Bigger doesn’t automatically mean better, but it just so happens we’ve gotten bigger and also better.”

In terms of race times, this year’s Ursuline team is its best yet. Six of the seven varsity runners have run 5 kilometers in less than 20 minutes, compared to one or two runners in an average season.

Because of TAPPS rules, the Bears only run 3,200 meters at their district and state meet.

However, they compete at the 5K distance early in their season, often beating some of the top public school programs in the area.

“We’ve been able to hold our own against some really successful programs,” Moody said.

“That equips us for success in the shorter races during the second half of the season.”

One key for Ursuline has been the emphasis on how faster individual times contribute to the overall team score and feed into collective success, said senior Caroline Miller, who has been the top runner for the Bears during each of the past two years.

“Our top girls realize that it’s no longer an individual sport.

We’re in it for each other,” said Miller, who has verbally committed to run in college at Tulsa. “When each of us strives to get better, then the team strives to get better.”

Ex United Crew Coach Now Docks at Jesuit

Randy Dam ready to lead tradition-rich former rival

Randy Dam has moved across White Rock Lake, but the tradition-rich program he’s taking over is very familiar.

After spending the past three years as the varsity head coach at Dallas United Crew, Dam is now at Jesuit, which has been a DUC rival for years.

However, Dam doesn’t see the change as a matter of joining the enemy, but rather as a sign of mutual respect. The opportunity came from a recommendation by former Jesuit coach John Fife, who left the program to take a job at his alma mater in Philadelphia.

“It was always in good spirits. We always pushed each other to do better,” Dam said.

“He did a heck of a job with this program.”

Dam spent four years at DUC, a club team consisting primarily of athletes from Highland Park, some of which went on to

“That was a pretty awesome run,” Dam said. “We started to win more regionally and make more appearances at the national level.”

While DUC lacks a permanent home base for its operations (after its idea for a

permanent boathouse was rejected by the city of Dallas in 2015), Jesuit is more established in terms of equipment and infrastructure.

The program shares leased space with the White Rock Boathouse Juniors club team, for which Dam previously coached.

“The support the Jesuit program has is phenomenal,” said Dam, who was a collegiate rower at Purdue. “I think I can do a lot with it.”

At Jesuit, he inherits a program that has sent multiple boats to national competitions in recent years. In 2016, the Rangers competed in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England. They were the runner-up at the Stotesbury Cup that same year.

Dam hopes eventually to put his stamp on the program — he’s previously worked with some Jesuit athletes during summer training programs — but will first look to continue that recent run of success at Jesuit with an experienced roster that includes seven seniors and a deep sophomore class.

“The success they’ve had is pretty strong. They’ve got great kids with a really good work ethic,” Dam said. “They’re a really self-motivated group. The culture is strong right now.”

Former Parish coach Scott Nady shares motivational messages

Scott Nady led Parish Episcopal to two state championships.

Special Contributor From playing football at the University of California–Berkeley to working as an NFL agent to leading Parish Episcopal School to a state championship twice, Scott Nady is showing no signs of slowing.

Though he stepped down as head coach from Parish in 2016, after 13 years, Nady said he is hardly retired.

Since 2005, Nady has spoken at more than 60 leadership conferences across the nation.

“When I’m a coach, mentor, advocate, and friend, that’s what feeds my soul.”

Scott Nady In January 2016, he launched his own motivational-speaking business with clients from Fortune 500 companies and nonprofits to sports teams and rehabilitation facilities. His ultimate goal is to impact people’s perspectives.

“When I’m a coach, mentor, advocate, and friend,” Nady said, “that’s what feeds my soul.”

He builds his presentations around his core tenets: the importance of persistence and perseverance, understanding the definition a bad day, and lining up what’s important.

“The only talent I think I’ve [had] that helped me achieve anything in my life is the complete … inability to give up,” he said.

As a speaker, Nady draws from his own life’s experiences and adversities, including when his son was diagnosed with

cerebral palsy.

As someone who had spent his adult life working with athletic young men engaged in physical activity, it was tough to hear “that it wouldn’t be the same path for your own boy,” Nady said.

The news, Nady said, forced him to dig deep and become a better person.

Nady said being a motivational speaker allows him to spend more time with his son and cover the high costs of his son’s therapy.

He brings to the role lessons learned coaching such as the importance of making connections and the power of words to change someone else, Nady said. “I think to some degree, I’ve been motivational speaking for 17 years.”

Nady also works with the Dallas-based nonprofit New Friends New Life, whose mission is to help sexually exploited and trafficked teen girls and women.

When he learned hundreds of young girls are on the streets of Dallas each night, Nady’s reaction was “bone marrow deep,” he said.

Hoping to reach males at a young age, Nady lectures to high-school football teams and is developing a curriculum for college football programs, educating young men about sex trafficking, and developing healthy, respectful relationships with women.

He doesn’t rule out coaching again.

“If the right coaching opportunity came along, I would definitely take a strong look at it,” said Nady.

However, for Nady, the right opportunity does not mean an easy one. “I’m a challenge junkie,” he said. He thrives on the struggle of building a program, one of tremendous unrealized potential.

“If I can find that setting,” he said. “I’d jump on it with both feet.

“And I would continue to be a motivational speaker.”

GAME MAKER BUILDS ON ‘TERRAGENESIS’ SUCCESS Winn, wife create game development company

A

lexander Winn, a 31-year old Highland Park native, is embarking on a new journey.

“I’ve thought for years that terraforming would make for a cool game mechanic,” Winn said of the hypothetical process of modifying the environment of a planet to make it habitable for Earth-based life.

The result, an iOS game called TerraGenesis, has now been downloaded by more than a million users, and Winn thinks it’s time to build a full-time game-development company around it.

Winn was first inspired to make the game upon seeing the trailer for Ridley Scott’s 2015 film The Martian, in which the notion of terraforming is a crucial plot element.

“I’m fascinated by the science of it, how the different factors influence each other, and the challenges seemed entirely well-suited to being turned into a game.”

Winn recalls that Highland Park High School first led him to software and game design, when he created a web series, The Codex Series,

“We were just high school kids messing around, but it absolutely blew up: 90 million hits in our first year, with press coverage on everything from MTV to NPR,” Winn said.

It was through that experience that Winn learned the web design fundamentals necessary to begin

creating iOS applications.

He would go on to attend film school at the University of Southern California, but “as it turns out, the apps are where I found success, so I’m leaning into them now,” he said.

The web series is also where Winn first settled on the Edgeworks Entertainment label, initially used to publish his personal projects but now representing his new start-up.

The start-up, of course, brings its own challenges.

Bugs, or errors in smartphone applications, are typically tested for by a full-time, paid staff member of a publisher.

Since Winn is the sole developer, these take more time to work out, which can be “nerve-wracking,” he said.

The drastic changes this new ca-

reer brought required support.

“We made a good team in the day-to-day discussions, and I understand his process — it only made sense to be his partner in building this company,” said Lacey Winn, who married Alexander in 2016,.

She took on much of the work in legitimizing Edgeworks, from handling communications between lawyers and the bank to bookkeeping and aiding in troubleshooting projects.

“I think a lot of what Alexander needed was permission from me to pursue his passion,” Lacey Winn said.

The greatest difficulty with TerraGenesis has been its promotion.

“There are so many apps and games available these days, trying to generate interest for your specific game often feels like shouting into the wind,” Alexander Winn said.

And yet, the excitement from the gaming community has sustained the Winns’ efforts.

“Seeing screenshots from fans playing my game and sitting there thinking, ‘How did they do that?!’ has been a fantastic joy,” he said.

Raub: Plan should cover more than money

Special Contributor Dallas-area retirement adviser Andy Raub has made a living helping people plan, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t like surprises. Not even at Walt Disney World.

He remembers one day, he got on a rollercoaster ride with a young grandson, and it “scared us both to death.”

That’s not how retirement should feel, Raub said.

“When you retire, you think it’s going to be like Disney World,” he said. “Things happen that scare us to death. Nobody prepares you for that.”

Raub is the founder and president of Raub Capital Management, part of Ameriprise Financial Services in Dallas.

Now he’s an author, whose book The Encore Curve: Retire with a Life Plan That Excites You offers a mix of financial coaching and life coaching to help readers avoid retirement surprises.

“When people leave their careers behind, they almost always leave a feeling of identity and purpose behind,” he said. “I have a lot of clients and friends who’ve retired but have no purpose but playing golf. A lot will go

back to work or look for something else to do.” There’s a real crisis among retirees right now; it’s much more than a money crisis, he said. “Very few people are prepared for the jarring life changes that happen when they retire.”

To combat that feeling, Raub advises clients to find their “why” in life.

“We call it building your GPS,” he said.

“A GPS provides guidance; [it] tells you how to get from where you are to where you want to be.”

For Raub and his clients, GPS stands for giftedness, passion, and standards. “Giftedness is, ‘What am I best at?’ Passion is, ‘What do I love doing?’ Standards are, ‘What’s most important to me?’ ” Raub says there are three states of retirement: Go, go; slow go; and no go. “You don’t want to spend all your money and energy trying to figure things out in go, go.”

“You’ve got to have an intentional plan to fill that ‘habit hole’ with things that are productive,” Raub said. “As we get older, our regrets get bigger and bigger. I’m 71 and I’m probably going to live another 30 years. I don’t want to live it doing nothing. I want it to have purpose and meaning.”

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Beer Bash will benefit NTFB

Special Contributor Luke’s Locker sales associate Bree Redwine, organizer of Luke’s Pint Striders, sponsored by the premier running store’s SMU location, dragged a 60-quart Igloo cooler and heavy, wheeled suitcase up the steps to the uptown British Beverage Company, a destination sports bar for the start and end of the club’s weekly Katy Trail run.

After the 3–6-mile Thursday run, Pint Striders regularly participate in a random raffle. That evening lucky ticket holders picked up a 6-pack, beer stein, and bag of eucalyptus Epsom salt. But the loudest screams of delight were for the restaurant and clothing gift cards.

Redwine organizes race events like teams for the 200-mile Ragnar Relay, fundraiser runs like for the Dallas Arboretum, and raffles to keep the 550 club members on her email list motivated to come out and train. On Nov. 2, Luke’s Pint Striders will host a Thanksgiving Pumpkin Beer Bash. Participants that night will get a free Ballast Point Brewing Company pumpkin-flavored beer. “But they have to do a Katie Trail run and bring canned goods for the North Texas Food Bank,” Redwine stressed.

Bree Redwine is the heart and breath behind the Pint Striders.

When she took it over in March of 2014, Redwine said, “I was so scared. I thought I would bomb.”

To the contrary. She had spent her life preparing for this responsibility. The daughter of a successful carpet store owner, she grew up along the Houston waterfront as a cross-country runner with a mom who ran 12 miles daily on the track.

She graduated from Bauder College with a B.A. in fashion merchandise and honed her marketing skills at apparel companies like Esprit, Girbaud (now The Limited), and Under Armour. When she applied for an opening at Luke’s Locker, co-founder Sharon Lucas remembers, “She exhibited high energy, enthusiasm, and you could just feel she had a real love of people. It was an easy decision.”

Bree Redwine is not worried about Luke’s Pint Striders growing too big. “If it gets bigger, it’s good for the running community.”

Blank Moves Beyond Lawsuit

Former Diamond Doctor owner aims to help others

Special Contributor David Blank fought nearly two years to save his name.

In 2014, a Nashville attorney, who had won financial settlements by making similar claims about other jewelers, accused Blank’s business, the Diamond Doctor, of defrauding customers. Blank decided to fight.

“It took almost every ounce of my energy [not to settle],” Blank said. “Every single category of people that I had in my life were harassed.”

In August, a federal judge approved an injunction to dismiss the case. The attacks stopped. And while Blank ended up spending millions of dollars defending himself, none of the money went to his accuser and no court found Diamond Doctor guilty of fraudulent activities, Blank said.

“You have to fight for what you believe in,” he said. “Money comes and goes, but you

Now that the situation is behind him, Blank is hoping to help others fight cyber-bullying and character attacks. His experience has taught him that small businesses are particularly at-risk from attacks like the ones he faced. He found that even profes-

He and his wife recently founded the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, which will focus on supporting charities to help vulnerable children in the community.

Its first major donation was to the suicide prevention program, a cause especially dear to Blank’s heart. His own father committed suicide.

“I’m looking forward to working with causes that are near and dear to me,” he said.

As for the business, Blank sold the Diamond Doctor to Blackstone Group-owned Diamonds Direct in November 2016. Selling the business had been part of his plan since he founded it 13 years before. Despite the stress of the past couple of years, he says he is happy with where he is now.

“I’ve come out stronger,” he said.

y husband Randy and I love the time we spend in our Colorado mountain home, but as Thanksgiving draws near, our focus shifts to family gatherings.

Each year, shortly before Dallas-area oak leaves turn red and yards overflow with colorful chrysanthemums, we return home to share this beautiful season with loved ones.

One of the things I cherish most about Thanksgiving is its simple focus on family and friends gathered around a table to celebrate the blessings of the year.

While the menu in many homes may include a heavy dose of football, I crave the togetherness of a beautifully appointed table filled with family-favorite recipes, and the laughter and shared memories that inevitably ensue.

Serve a Thanksgiving menu rich in tradition around a beautifully decorated table.

I’ve long been known for my tablescapes, and Thanksgiving provides the perfect occasion for me to shift into overdrive when it comes to creating a table setting that encourages guests to linger. This year’s design begins with a length of deep-coral fabric accented with touches of gold, loosely arranged down the center of the table, and topped with several lengths of silk autumn leaf garland, entwined

with a string of battery-powered mini-white lights. Various sizes and shapes of pumpkins, substantial, caramel-hued candles, and a cherished pheasant statue complete this nature-inspired centerpiece. For variety, consider adding fresh apples, lemons, and squash to the arrangement.

Make-ahead recipes are my solution to keeping our Thanksgiving feast manageable and stress-

free. Pumpkin, butternut squash, and pecan pies are baked the day before and chilled to ensure the pastry remains flaky. My sweet potato and apricot casserole is assembled one or two days ahead and chilled, then baked just before serving. I make cornbread for my much-loved Southern Cornbread Dressing early in the week and do all the chopping of celery and onion in advance so the ingredients are ready to assemble in a matter of minutes.

When it comes to creating cherished memories for family and friends, I’ll be serving a Thanksgiving menu rich in tradition as we gather around a beautifully decorated table.

SOUTHERN CORNBREAD DRESSING CORNBREAD

DIRECTIONS In a very large mixing bowl or roasting pan, combine cornbread, wheat bread, celery, onion, apple, raisins, cranberries, sage, and thyme. In a small bowl, whip the eggs with a fork and stir in the chicken broth.

Pour most of the broth over the cornbread mixture and toss well to moisten. Add the remaining broth if the dressing feels dry.

INGREDIENTS • 2 1/3 cups flour • 1 2/3 cups yellow cornmeal • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 3 eggs • 1 2/3 cups milk • 1/2 cup canola oil DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large bowl, stir together flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and oil. Gradually add the milk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring just until it is mixed.

Pour the batter into a lightly greased 9-by13-inch pan and bake 15 to 20 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the middle of the cornbread comes out clean. Remove the pan from the oven and set it aside to cool.

Cornbread may be made two days ahead.

Spoon the dressing into a large, lightly greased casserole dish, cover with foil, and chill until ready to bake. Preheat the oven to 350 F and bake, covered, 45 to 50 minutes until it is hot and steamy. Uncover and bake 10 minutes more to brown the top.

DRESSING INGREDIENTS • 1 recipe cornbread, sliced into 1/2-inch cubes • 4 slices wheat bread, set aside to dry, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1 1/2 cups celery, rinsed and chopped • 1 1/2 cups onion, peeled and chopped

• 1 large apple, rinsed, cored, and chopped • 1/2 cup golden raisins • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1 tablespoon dried rubbed sage • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • 2 eggs • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth

YIELD: 12 servings CHEF’S NOTE: The dressing may be covered and chilled overnight in the refrigerator before baking. It may also be made ahead, frozen, thawed, and baked.

We all face daunting challenges at some points in our lives. Whether the crisis involves health, career, relationships, the initial reaction is always fear.

I’m not talking about being scared, which is a natural response to the unknown. Being scared gets your adrenalin going so you can think clearly and act decisively. It has a purpose, and then it passes.

Fear, on the other hand, paralyzes you, and if you let it, fear will take up residence in your mind and heart.

Of course I was scared. I had been diagnosed with Stage 4 oral cancer. From one day to the next, I found myself in a life-or-death situation with a very limited amount of time to decide how I would handle it.

“Gratitude forces you to find the positive in your present situation, whatever that may be.”

Ilse Anderson I had to set firm boundaries to keep fear at bay. Because even people with the best intentions will focus on the negative in a critical situation, and fear feeds on negativity. I had to shut out anything or anyone who would steal my positive outlook.

Nelson Mandela once said, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

And, indeed, my decision to undergo a three-quarter glossectomy [surgical removal of part of the tongue] reflected my hope for a future with my children and my

dear friends.

While negativity nurtures fear, positivity enables hope. That is why a positive attitude is such a powerful force. But what fosters a positive attitude?

The answer is gratitude.

Gratitude forces you to find the positive in your present situation, whatever that may be. I couldn’t travel the world as I always had, for instance, but I reveled in seeing the sun rise and set from my window.

As part of my recovery, I made “gratitude lists” every day. As I appreciated what I had in that moment, I shifted my focus away from what I did not have.

Things I used to take for granted took on the significance they deserved.

My life became fuller, even at its lowest point. Gratitude opened me to positive change.

Today, the cancer treatments have ended, but gratitude continues to propel me forward. I look back at my gratitude lists from two years ago and smile.

Every step, big or small, had a place on my list: the surgery, my children, a brain that still functioned, the tiny bit of my tongue that remained intact and helped me speak again. Each statement of gratitude led me to today.

Above all, I learned there is nothing to fear. Life is unpredictable. You don’t know when yours will turn upside down. The things you think are important suddenly become irrelevant.

I hope my story will inspire you to live in the present moment. Live in gratitude.

Live every day with no regrets. Make each day so wonderful that yesterday gets jealous. Say yes to life!

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life with a little fresh air, some quality time outdoors, and hands-on lessons in farm-to-table (actually, garden-to-table) cooking.

At the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden’s new 3.5-acre edible display garden, A Tasteful Place, there’s something to do 362 days out of the year.

The garden features an array of vegetables, herbs, and flowers tailored for both beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.

Interactive cooking classes led by professional chefs will be held inside the indoor pavilion, a 3,600-square-foot building with 180-degree views of the garden and White Rock Lake.

Tastings from the garden are offered seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And there is no extra charge — it comes included with the Arboretum entrance fee.

Take Cues From Your Cat

Treat those furry, feline buddies right

STEPHANIE CASEY Cats have charmed many of us into lifelong (theirs) submission (ours).

Growing up, my family usually had a cat around, and throughout my life random felines have found me and moved in (my latest crawled out of a drain behind my house patchy, starving, and affectionate — oy!).

Here are some interesting notes on this peculiar species we have welcomed into our homes.

FOOD & WATER: They will partake of these two things in the same place but really love to forage for water. Put a bowl or mug in a tucked-away corner and you’ll notice that water source depleting faster. If your cat is knocking over their water dish or sticking their paw in water, they may have extra sensitive whiskers and need a wider and more shallow receptacle so their whiskers don’t fold or scrape while sipping.

CLIMBING: It’s a cat’s natural instinct to perch up high. This gives them a vantage point from which to spot any trouble. That’s why your cat wants to hop up on everything. If you don’t want them on most spots, make a couple you are OK with — the top of the fridge or an ar-

moire, or that one extra chair in the corner — tantalizing by putting a blanket or towel there for extra comfort. They’ll gravitate to those spots.

SCRATCHING: Yes, something will be sacrificed while you train your cat not to scratch up your nice things. But it’s possible to train them. Declawing should never be an option — it’s like pull-ing off your finger or toe nails. They need them, physically, and there is also the chance of on-going pain and deformity with that “surgery.” It’s a cruel practice, so we have to figure out other ways to get along with their claws. Most importantly (like with climbing), offer alternatives. Some cats like floor scratch mats, some a sisal pole.

There are lots of stylish cat climbing and scratching options. Google is your friend.

LOVE: This is why we let them invade our homes! But they don’t all give and receive it in the same way. Consider it a compliment if your cat shakes his tail in excitement while looking you in the eye. Rubbing, head butting (proper term: bunting), and kneading are all common behaviors that signify comfort and affection (and territory marking). Some cats want full-body petting, while others have a strict head-only policy. Try gently pulling on your cat’s head, face, and neck skin and fur — most of them love this massage.

Most important for a human-feline copacetic lifestyle is to take cues from your beast. Cats aren’t like dogs; they don’t live to please you. In fact, they’ll clearly tell you with body language and sounds when they are displeased. In the event they DO react with teeth or claws, know that it’s coming from fear or discomfort, so help them be comfortable in the ways they are naturally inclined and you’ll have a trusting, furry buddy by your side. Meow.

JOHN F. SKELTON JR.

M

y father, John Frederick Skelton Jr., was born on 4 October 1914 at the family home located at 112 Park Street in Frost Texas. He moved to Corsicana, Texas at age 5 and lived at 212 N. 14th Street. He graduated from Corsicana High School along with his best friend, Claude Albritton.

He studied to be a bookkeeper and his first job was with Wolf Brand Chili. A depression era child, he never went to college. After Wolf Brand Chili he went to work for an entrepreneur, John W. Carpenter, as a personal assistant. Mr. Carpenter was putting together what would eventually become Texas Power and Light. At age 57 Fred became President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas Power and Light, at the time a $2 billion corporation.

In 1940 he married Doris McKamy and had four children, John III, Joan, Michael, and Steve. He died in March 1994 of complications from food poisoning. His ashes are interred along with his wife’s

at Frankford Cemetery in Dallas. He and his wife Doris lived at 3601 Euclid in Highland Park from 1997 until 2007 in a home designed by their architect son.

Fred’s father was John Frederick Skelton Sr. and his mother was Estelle Van Hook.

His paternal grandfather was James Robartos Skelton and his maternal grandfather was William Camilius Van Hook.

He had a brother, Charles Skelton, and a sister, Mary Ethel Louise White.

Fred served in WWII as a Army navigator, flying the Hump in Burma. He was an avid golfer and loved travel and sports cars. He is deeply missed by all who knew him.
