rowing up I was not that child who dreamed of what her wedding would look like. The closest I ever got was a preschool marriage that lasted all of lunch period. But the dress, flowers, music, and venue never crossed my mind. So working on this issue of Society magazine has given me a glimpse into a whole new world. While I won’t be planning a wedding in the near future, Rachel Burt, who has experience as both a bride and a wedding planner, taught me some things I think I’ll bookmark for whenever that day comes (page 21). This issue, we also get a peek into what it takes to create one of the most noted events of the year, the Crystal Charity Ball. From talking to the 2016 chairman about what being a part of the 100-woman committee involves, you can tell these women don’t play around … until the night of the ball, that is.

A Legacy of Giving

By Britt E. Stafford

F

Christie Carter & Claire Emanuelson { MATTHEW SHELLEY }

or the past 64 years, the Crystal Charity Ball has more than made a name for itself in the Dallas philanthropy scene. It has created a legacy, by giving to various charities and agencies that benefit children. Each year within the organization, 100 women with extensive philanthropic backgrounds strive to live out that legacy. According to 2016 ball chairman Christie Carter, Crystal Charity committee members are typically seasoned, established philanthropists. Carter knows a thing or two about giving back. In addition to her educational and professional background, her résumé includes a long list of organizations she has dedicated her time to, such as Dallas CASA and the Junior League of Dallas. To Carter, her role with Crystal Charity is a full-time job. “One hundred women working together can be powerful, and I believe there is strength is numbers,” underwriting chairman Claire Emanuelson said. Emanuelson has worked with several organizations such as the American Heart Association and the Clayton Dabney Foundation for Kids with Cancer. “We have 100 members with 260-plus positions to fill,” Carter said. “We are blessed that within our membership, everybody is a team player. Everybody gives 110 percent.” Each year, following a four-month application and review process, Crystal Charity selects a group of agencies recognized as the most in-need. Past beneficiaries include Dallas Children’s Theater, Cafe Momentum, and Mercy Street, Inc. According to Emanuelson, underwriting donors are crucial to raising enough money for each organization. Underwriting efforts include the annual Ten Best Dressed Fashion Show and Luncheon, the children’s book, and contribution tickets. Since 1952, the Crystal Charity Ball committee has raised more than $130 million. Funds given to beneficiaries have supported new facilities, research programs, educational grants, scholarships, endowments, and equipment. “This is not a situation where the money rolls in without any work,” Carter said. “The heart of what we are doing is for these particular projects. We have a fair amount of donors and they feel so strongly about our research process.” This year, Crystal Charity will provide funding to seven organizations: Captain Hope’s Kids/Hope Supply Co., Community Partners of Dallas, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Notre Dame School of Dallas, Parkland Foundation, Teach for America, and the Family Place. Ask Carter and Emanuelson, and they will tell you they don’t put in the hours for bragging rights. “It’s a fantastic opportunity,” Carter said. “You meet so many different people who need to help and who want to help. It’s very eye opening.”

generations of brides in her father’s family. Assisting the bride as maid of honor was her sister, Paige Kelley. Bridesmaids included Meredith Barnes, Katherine Doviak, Laurel Folmar, Caroline Greehey, Katherine Krause, Kelly Nash, Wesley Davis

Reese, Anna Burdette Richardson, Elizabeth Yates, and Courtney Zentner. The bride’s niece, Kathleen Tomlinson, was a junior bridesmaid. From Bridal Planner to Bride By Joshua Baethge

R

achel Burt, owner and lead wedding planner of As You Wish Wedding and Events, has coordinated countless weddings. In June, she finally got to experience the flip side when she married her fiancé, artist Abel Garcia.

“I really enjoy the process of planning a wedding and designing it,” Burt said. “I knew that I wanted to do that for my own wedding.” As she does with her clients, Burt worked to create a celebration that reflected her personal style and her fiancé’s. Still, despite being an expert on all things weddings, she struggled deciding on a dress. “I was a little freaked out because I couldn’t find something that I liked,” Burt said. Help came from an unexpected but widely known source. After trying on more than 100 different gowns, Burt wrote a letter to the TLC show Say Yes to the Dress last summer. In November, she jetted off to film in New York with her mother, maid of honor, and cousin. By that time, she had found her wedding gown, so the show helped her find a reception dress. Potential trouble arose in the spring when she learned her episode would air June 3, just two weeks before her wedding date. Another bride previously sued the show for revealing her dress before the wedding. Burt had a different idea. “I thought I could either be really upset, or I can just make a party out of it, which is what I do,” she said. Her watching party at The Joule is one of the many fond memoires Burt has from the months leading up to her wedding. She often recalls special moments like spending time with her mom, choosing floral

arrangements, and watching her fiancé get emotional during an engagement session. She strives to create similar experiences for her clients. “I want them to not only look back on the wedding day, but also think back on the planning process as a whole and how much fun it was,” Burt said. According to Burt, it’s important for wedding planners to develop a relationship with their clients to better understand their likes and tastes. Burt starts by asking a series of questions. If a couple lives in the area, she may go to dinner or happy hour with them to get a better idea of who they are. “I want to know what they like to do individually and what they like to do as a couple so that I can get us started in the process,” Burt said. The next step in the planning process is establishing a budget. Money issues can be one of the biggest sources of wedding stress. If an amount is agreed upon early, the rest of the planning process tends to be much more enjoyable. “You have to be respectful of people’s budgets,” Burt said. “Then we can have a conversation on how to get the most bang for your buck.” After that, she said it’s simply a matter of pulling everything together so that the couple has a day they will never forget. Burt said having been through the process herself allows her to empathize more with her clients. “I felt like I could before, but it’s a whole other thing once { JENNIFER YARBRO PHOTOGRAPHY } you’ve gone through it,” she said.
