WHAT IS PDCE?

Professional Development & Community Engagement (PDCE) is a unit within UBC’s Faculty of Education. Our goal is to support the professional learning of all types of educators across British Columbia and Canada.

1

We aim to do this by working with the academic departments within the Faculty and with school districts across the province to build programming that is current, adaptive, and inclusive. Our core audience is teachers in the K–12 school system, but we know that teaching and learning don't stop there; we believe anyone who educates can learn and benefit from what we offer. Our work is grounded in the three PDCE pillars:

2

3

Inclusivity

Accessibility

Indigeneity

We support the development of educational programs and pedagogies that include all types of people, and recognize that inclusive communities enrich the lives of all citizens.

We are committed to continually improving the accessibility of our programs, whether it is through online mediums or our faceto-face offerings.

We recognize and acknowledge that we learn and work on the unceded territory of the xwmə kwə əm (Musqueam) people. Our students, staff and faculty benefit from the rich history and learning shared by local Indigenous Knowledge Keepers.

Cohorts The following graduate programs are all offered through a cohort model. This means that although you will be studying part-time, and for some programs online, you will be progressing through your program with a core group of people and following a predetermined schedule. Instead of navigating graduate school alone, you will be doing it alongside your peers who are invested in the same issues and subject areas as you are. We’ve seen this builds community, support systems and allows for greater collaboration across the programs. You won’t need to worry about building your own schedule, ensuring you have pre-requisite courses, or if you can complete all the needed requirements in the specified amount of time – all of that work is done for you.

Child Advocacy in Action: The Legacy of Janusz Korczak Janusz Korczak (1878–1942) was an outstanding Polish-Jewish pediatrician, educator and writer. He was a pioneer who helped change our perception of children noting that “children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today.” This Institute is a result of a collaboration between the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada and UBC’s Faculty of Education and will explore the educational philosophy and pedagogy of Korczak.

Agriculture in the Classroom This Institute explores practical ways to integrate concepts related to food production and consumption, food safety, agricultural issues, and sustainability across the curriculum and all grade levels. This Institute is a collaboration with The BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation.

Institut de Français, UBC à Québec Designed to meet the needs of all French second language teachers, this three-week language and culture immersion program is held at the Collège Mérici in Québec City. Morning classes, afternoon workshops and field trips concentrate on improving your ability to converse in French. The program is delivered entirely in French, and visits within the community are an integral part of the program, making this a truly immersive language experience. pdce.educ.ubc.ca/QuebecCity SPRING INSTITUTE

In Spring 2019 we are introducing our first Spring Institute to be held during March Break.

Lights, Camera, Action! VR Production for the Classroom Experience, explore, and present the world in a new way. Over the course of three mornings, this Spring Institute will guide you through the steps to shoot, edit and share 360-degree videos. You will learn the basics of narrative storytelling and how to think like a director in this new medium. You will translate your ideas into a script and then a storyboard. Using the storyboard, you will work in teams to shoot and edit your videos. As an educator, you will get ideas about how to use 360-degree video production as the basis for your students to experience and explore the world around them in a different way; acquire, interpret, and present information in a new medium; and collaborate to plan, carry out and review constructions and activities in a team. pdce.educ.ubc.ca/spring-institutes
