qui l’avait vu naître quelque 95 ans plus tôt, toute l’Italie, et au-delà, tous les connaisseurs et amateurs de son œuvre ont pleuré le génial ingénieur et industriel italien, père des bateaux de luxe Riva. L’amour de la navigation, chez les Riva, c’est une affaire de famille débutée dès le XIX e siècle avec des bateaux de transports. Mais la renommée du patronyme, c’est Carlo Riva qui va la forger avec une vision digne des immortels inventeurs qui l’ont précédé comme Bugatti ou Ferrari. Son projet ? Rien moins que construire les plus beaux bateaux du monde, mais à échelle humaine, privilégiant la noblesse des matériaux et la pureté des lignes. C’est ainsi qu’il conçoit un runabout révolutionnaire, en en réalisant tous les dessins, de la coque au gouvernail et jusqu’aux vis ou aux radios. Et il le pare d’acajous précieux, choisis en Afrique équatoriale ou au Honduras, pour un rendu inimitable qui sera la signature des Riva. En 1971, un peu sur un coup de tête, il vend son chantier et entreprend un voyage à sa démesure : l’exploration exhaustive des îles grecques pendant près de neuf ans…

CARLO RIVA, THE MAN WHO LOVED THE SEA In April 2017, when Carlo Riva passed away in Sarnico, Italy, his birthplace some 95 years earlier, all of Italy and connoisseurs and fans of his work around the world mourned for this genial engineer and businessman, the father of the luxury Riva yachts. A love of sailing runs through the Riva family, and started in the 19th Century with freight transport. But the reputation of the Riva name would be forged by Carlo Riva, with a vision worthy of the immortal inventers who came before him, a maritime Bugatti or Ferrari. What was his project? Nothing less than to build the most beautiful boats in the world, but on a human scale, focusing on noble materials and pure lines. So, he designed a revolutionary runabout, producing all the designs from the hull to the rudder and even down to the screws and the radios. He bedecked it all in precious mahogany, from Equatorial Africa or Honduras, producing the inimitable finish that would become the Riva signature. In 1971, somewhat on a whim, he sold his boatyard and set off on a suitably outlandish journey: an exhaustive exploration of the Greek Islands, an odyssey that lasted nearly nine years.

Et si, depuis 1996 , le bois a laissé la place aux fibres modernes, le prestige original est toujours de mise. Mieux, le vent de l’innovation souffle toujours à l’image du nouveau fleuron de la marque, le Rivamare. Cette nouvelle œuvre d’art créée par la plus célèbre marque nautique du monde est une icône du design, qui une fois de plus, bouscule les codes de l’élégance intemporelle. La famille Riva aussi est toujours là, étroitement associée à la destinée des bijoux marins qui portent son nom. Elle est ainsi en charge, à Sarnico, de la rénovation des bateaux anciens en acajou, dont n’existent que 3 000 exemplaires dans le monde environ. Et elle gère, depuis Monaco, l’exclusivité de la commercialisation des Riva en France avec des showrooms en Principauté, à Cannes et à Saint-Tropez, perpétuant ainsi la tradition de Carlo, héraut et héros de la dolce vita.

Thankfully, the sale of the boatyard did not mean the end of yacht production, which continued in the “Cantieri Riva” at Sarnico, on the shores of Lake Iseo near Bergamo. And although since 1996 wood has been replaced by modern fibres, the original prestige remains unchanged. Better still, the wind of innovation continues to blow, as witnessed in the company’s latest flagship, the Rivamare. This new work of art created by the by the most famous nautical brand in the world is a design icon that rewrites the rulebook of timeless elegance once again. The Riva family is still closely associated with the destiny of the beautiful vessels that bear its name. At Sarnico, the family is in charge of renovating the old mahogany boats, of which only around 3,000 are still in existence worldwide. And, from Monaco it manages the exclusive commercialisation of the Riva vessels in France, with showrooms in the Principality, Cannes and Saint Tropez, thus perpetuating the tradition of Carlo, herald and hero of the dolce vita.

Fille aînée de Carlo, Lia Riva est née à Sarnico et elle a vécu toute son enfance juste au-dessus du chantier Riva, baignant ainsi dès son plus jeune âge dans la passion familiale. Rien d’étonnant alors à ce qu’elle aussi se soit consacrée à la pérennisation de l’héritage Riva. Elle dirige ainsi aujourd’hui la société Monaco Boat Service qui joue un rôle essentiel dans la vie quotidienne et les affaires à Monaco et qui est connue notamment pour ses magnifiques showrooms, ses embarcadères et son trésor secret, le « Riva tunnel », qui abrite certains des plus luxueux bateaux du monde. Dans le même esprit que son père qui fut un grand philanthrope, Lia Riva agit considérablement pour de grandes causes comme la fondation pour les droits de l’Homme R. Kennedy et elle soutient activement l’art contemporain, ce qui l’a conduite à devenir une excellente ambassadrice de la Principauté de Monaco pour des projets culturels et artistiques comme le Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.

LIA RIVA, AN INHERITED PASSION The oldest daughter of Carlo, Lia Riva was born in Sarnico and spent her entire childhood living just above the Riva workshop; she was thus immersed in the family passion from a very young age. So it is not surprising that she has dedicated herself to ensuring the longevity of the Riva legacy. Today she is in charge of Monaco Boat Service, a company that plays an essential role in the daily and business life of Monaco, and is renowned for its magnificent showrooms, quays and its secret treasure, the Riva tunnel, home to some of the world’s most luxurious vessels. In the same spirit as her father, who was a great philanthropist, Lia Riva invests much energy in causes such as the Robert F. Kennedy human rights foundation. She also actively supports contemporary arts, which has led her to become an outstanding ambassador for the Principality of Monaco on cultural and artistic projects such as the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
