PDI shares two powerful statements from two of the industry’s most influential, knowledgeable and well-respected athletes and icons: Pantera Blacksmith and Felix Cane.

We love both of their powerful, yet graceful styles when practicing and performing pole. In conjunction with the power theme of this issue, we wanted to address an important aspect of pole that many of our readers have asked: “How does one balance both power and grace through various tricks, moves and transitions on the pole?”

IN EFFORT TO HELP EACH ONE OF US IMPROVE PERSONAL STYLE AND INCREASE CONFIDENCE ON THE POLE IN ORDER TO GAIN ULTIMATE SUCCESS, TWO POWERFUL POLE PROFESSIONALS, FELIX CANE AND PANTERA BLACKSMITH, GIVE EACH OF THEIR OWN POWER STATEMENTS ON THE TOPIC “BALANCING POWER AND GRACE”.

12

Combining grace and power are significantly important to delivering a fluid and flawless pole performance. Jerking or thrusting into place is unappealing to the eye and can also cause injury. Control is key in executing power moves on the pole, and flexibility is the key to [obtaining] control and grace. If you have the strength to manipulate your body around the pole, or any apparatus, flexibility will make your movements appear more seamless and magical, therefore allowing you to successfully balance [both] power and grace.

PANTERA PANTERA “

To balance power and grace, build the body up properly through progressions and exercises that increase in difficulty over time, especially if you do not have a regular fitness routine. Pole can be extremely hard on the body, most definitely unforgiving and one-sided if the practitioner limits themselves to one-sided activities. Having patience and understanding with your body will make a great difference when the body communicates to you. Grace is an elegant form or way of moving. Grace doesn’t have a stressed face or flexed appendages; it’s relaxed and comfortable. Learn how to relax, don’t rush through movements, and learn every piece of every movement. Power is work. The more you become aware of how to move the body in a controlled fashion, [the closer one becomes] to the final destination of power. Then do it again, and again, and again. Unlike grace, power is not always comfortable. It can be explosive, apprehensive or surprising. To balance grace and power, practice the movements (not the pose), and the movements and transitions in and out of poses or pauses. Build the strength to do them well so there is no visible straining.”

For this issue, we decided to visit a place in the world that is truly rich with a powerful history. Located near the center of Europe, Budapest,

Hungary is deeply rooted in history that is easily traced back to the B.C. Era. Heavily influenced by Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze & Iron-Age cultures, present day Budapest boasts a lifestyle of both diversity and tradition. Over the centuries, Budapest has undergone numerous power struggles by various governing agents. Struggles have always been followed up with compromise, such as in the naming of the city itself. Former cities Pest, Buda and Obuda were untied in the early 1870’s, establishing Budapest as the Hungarian capital. The important themes of power, revolution and compromise are the focus of the Hungarian economy, including the business of pole fitness. These traits are easily recognizable in owner Alma Pirner’s mission to bring pole to her community through the Dollhouse Studios. Established over a decade ago in 2002, the original Dollhouse Studio was a revolutionary act of faith on Alma’s part. Pole Fitness was in its very early stages, still heavily laden with stereotypes and not much support. This did not deter Alma, however, who now owns three studios in Budapest in addition to her satellite training facilities all over Hungary. So, what exactly are the secrets of success for Alma and the Dollhouse franchises? First, according to Alma, expertise is key. It is imperative in the Dollhouse

schools that there is qualified leadership. “All of my trainers are certified, highly trained sports and fitness instructors,” Alma explains.

sport of pole. She has reached out to the community through performance and hosting major events, such as the Pole World Championship in 2011.

“Each teacher has an accredited diploma in some form of sports, fitness or dance, in addition to being well-trained safety experts in pole,” she explains.

“Hungary is at the heart of Europe, participating in and organizing pole related activities. We can open a gate between Western and Eastern Europe through our efforts,” says Alma.

Good leadership and a solid background are definitely essential when it comes to setting a precedence at the Dollhouse. Of equal importance to expertise, Alma names variety as another key element in her success. “We offer over 15 different types of pole related classes, and not just the usual levels one through five.” She continues, “The variety is very colorful. We have classes in showgirl pole dance, salsa, pole ballet, stretch, pole power and boot camp on the pole, in addition to the levels of learning.” Alma believes that students progress better and truly find their abilities more often on the pole when given a variety of options to choose from. Beyond classes in pole dance and fitness, Dollhouse Studios also offer options such as Zumba, and a variety of aerial skills classes. Another important piece to the success of any business, is its ability to fulfill a need within the community where it lies. Alma has used her knowledge and passion to help educate people in Budapest about the art and

EXPERTISE IS KEY.

IT IS IMPERATIVE IN THE DOLLHOUSE SCHOOLS THAT THERE IS QUALIFIED LEADERSHIP.”

By involving and giving back to members of the community, Alma believes her Dollhouse Studios will continue to be an important asset to the economy of Budapest and beyond, as well as to her students. Regardless of personal styles of pole dance or beliefs associated with it, Alma says there is a place for everyone in the industry. “On one side of pole, there is the artistic performance, while on the other there is the 100 percent fitness aspect,” she explains, “but everyone loves doing it. Anyone can find him or herself on either side of self expression.” She concludes that the pole offers fun, excitement, pure and natural power, art, sport and fitness all in one. As for the future of Dollhouse Studios, Alma shares, “I have never looked at this profession as a job. I have always done it with a full heart and with full faith. I have always looked for those who feel the same, because that’s when great things can happen.” She passionately continues, “I love the Dollhouse. I am grateful for it because I have a professional, loyal and unique team of people who are committed to this sport. We share a common dream.” It is clear that there is plenty of innovation, dedication and passion powering the Dollhouse Studios into the future. There is no doubt that there will be plenty of successes to follow! =

MEET MARION CRAMPE BY CHASTITIE LUJAN 18

As an athlete, Marion persists to grow and challenge herself, and recently added aerial fabric, lyra, acrobatics and contortion as part of her fitness regime.

A

s fellow artists and passionate fans of the pole world, the PDI staff feels especially lucky to have the opportunity to share the ideas and insight of so many incredible enthusiasts from all over the globe.

We have spoken with many inspirational performers, business owners and pole fitness associates about various types of topics. Each conversation we have with someone opens a whole new realm of appreciation that we, in turn, get to share with our readers. Recently, we had the distinct opportunity to interview one of the world’s favorite pole athletes, Marion Crampe. It is our pleasure to share some of Marion’s expertise with you, in hope that you will also gain strength, motivation

and excitement from her experiences.

Marion Crampe is a French native, currently living in Milan, Italy since October 2010.
In 2006, Marion was first exposed to the art of pole when she took her first class at Pink Paradise Pole School in Paris, France. She was instructed by Laurence Hilsum at that time, and says that she “fell in love immediately with this art.”
Long before Marion discovered her love for pole, coincidently, she was laying a strong foundation for her future as a performer and competitor of the vertical arts. Marion shares, “I started my career (in dance) with Classic Ballet and Ballet Jazz.” She further explains that she later added Jazz and Hip Hop skills to her dance background as well, and even 19

She is an active member of the French Pole Dance Team, where her fellow colleagues, including Prana Ovide Etienne, Manuela Carneiro and Doris Arnold, continually inspire her.

worked with the Nike Team in Paris. During her time training in Paris, Marion also had the opportunity to become involved in some Burlesque and Cabaret styles of dance through her work with the Chloe Van Paris Company. Her numerous skills have served as a strong background for furthering her practices on the pole. She credits her vast experience for her success on the pole, as well as her “mentor” Liana, who is one of Australia’s pioneers in the art of pole.

All of these things have led Marion to where she currently stands, as one of the international favorites in the art and sport of pole.
In 2009, Marion began her performance and competition campaign when she entered the first French Pole Dance Championship. She placed third in this event, and earned the “Sponsor Choice Award”, as well as the hearts of many new fans. In 2010, she again put her skills to the test in the French Championship gaining momentum, this time by placing second. Since her initial debut to the competition circuit, Marion has continued to challenge herself by entering numerous other pole showcases and championship events, including Pole Art, Pole World Cup and Aerial International. 20

Marion loves being on stage and continues to seek opportunities to share her love of pole through performance and the competitive arena. In addition to being a talented performer and competitor, Marion is a motivating teacher. She currently shares her expertise on the pole through instruction at the Milan Pole Dance Studio. She has also participated in countless other training opportunities all over the world through workshops, camps and private instruction. Her mission includes her continued contribution to the expansion of pole dance in Italy and throughout the world.
As an athlete, Marion persists to grow and challenge herself, and recently added aerial fabric, lyra, acrobatics and contortion as part of her fitness regime.

She exemplifies power on the pole through the passion and energy she creates and has been an inspiration to many throughout her career. The world should definitely expect to see much more of this talented artist as she continues to train, evolve and share her skills through multiple facets in the global pole arena.=

“CHILDREN ARE SUFFERING FROM A HIDDEN EPIDEMIC OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT. OVER 3 MILLION REPORTS OF CHILD ABUSE ARE MADE EVERY YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES; HOWEVER, THOSE REPORTS CAN INCLUDE MULTIPLE CHILDREN. IN 2009, APPROXIMATELY 3.3 MILLION CHILD ABUSE REPORTS AND ALLEGATIONS WERE MADE INVOLVING AN ESTIMATED 6 MILLION CHILDREN.” CHILD HELP ORGANIZATION [WWW.CHILDHELP.ORG] Furthermore, the abuse is often sexual. The statistics for both men and women who are victims of sexual abuse are one in every six. That amounts to 207,754 victims each year in the US alone. Every two minutes, someone is a victim of sexual abuse or assault. 44 percent of them are under 18 years of age, and 80 percent are under age 30. 54 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police, and 97 percent of rapists will never spend one day in jail. 38 percent of sexual abuse is perpetrated by a family or friend of the victim. [statists from RAINN] Those are some alarming statistics. And, they affect persons of all walks of life in every community, even ours. There are those in our industry who have struggled with the reality of the above statistics. Philip Deal is no different. Philip Ryan Deal has been a professional dancer and choreographer his entire life. He is also an active yoga and Pilates instructor. Recently, Philip was introduced to pole fitness, and quickly applied his skills and background to this new art form. He has competed in the American Pole Fitness Championships, Polesque and National Aerial Pole Art. Aside from pole, Philip has become interested in aerial skills, training at Esh Aerial Arts in Somerville, Maine. In addition, he studies Astrology, Numerology, Tarot, Herbology, and other metaphysics. He shares, “I am also an avid reader and my favorite topics are Western and Eastern philosophy, ecology, social linguistics, and political science.” All things considered, Philip seems like a pretty normal, well-adjusted guy. However, the events he suffered as a child and the secrets he kept for years have been far from the surface. “I came from a family full of domestic and sexual abuse,” he describes. He was groomed as a young boy to enter the sex industry, and was victimized for years by those inside and outside his family. “I suffered from low self esteem for most of my life; that shame fueled my art which made me extremely productive and successful as a dancer, while on the inside I was hollow and empty,” he explains. “As a male survivor I thought that I would never find a woman who would love me. I thought I would always be viewed as some kind of freak,” he says. “I was afraid to speak out, like most men. I held it in for years and went down every self destructive path one could go on,” Philip continues, “which is a typical response for most victims of abuse.”

and has made the choice to move past the abuse.” So, how do you overcome the past? Where do you find the power to change the outcome of negative life events and consequences, and move forward as a healthy, happy person in life? First, Philip shares, “We need to break the stereotypes and educate people about the truth. Only then can we eliminate the shame.” As members of an industry full of passion and in support of health, fitness and wellness, pole dancers can unite as a positive voice for those in need. He encourages pole dancers as a community to get involved in this, and other important causes. There is security and empowerment in numbers. “Reaching out for help is the hardest part,” says Philip. “That’s where a strong community can intervene. If the people in your life do not support you, then you need to cut them out and find a community of people you can trust.” Philip Deal is a strong example of a survivor. He wants to share his knowledge with others and help them find healing. “Right now I am promoting 1in6.org because it is the most accessible resources to answering questions for men who have had my experiences. There is another one called malesurvivor.org that does the same and that is a future project for me. It appalls me that there is such a lack of resources for male survivors of sexual abuse. The stigma attached to males who are abused is awful. It is the mainstream belief that males cannot be victims of sexual assault, and that they can defend themselves against unwanted sexual contact from predators. Or, if the abuser is female the boy is lucky for the encounter making him a stud. But this is not the case. It is important that survivors speak out, this is not a topic people want to address. Men are effected in different ways than women from this sort of trauma although their are similarities. This also effects us when somebody we love is walking around wounded and not reaching out for the proper care. We must create a safe space in which men and women feel that they can confide in their partners and start healing.” As a community of athletes, artists, advocates and friends, let’s be the kind of partners and people that promote healing, and the power to change. =

You can reach Philip at: philipdeal.com or Philipryandeal@gmail.com References: (http://www.rainn.org/statistics); (www.childhelp.org)

His concludes, “The abuse I suffered growing up shaped my life, my choices, and my relationships. But today I stand empowered by the fact that I am not that victimized boy anymore, I am a man who survived

hen I heard about the Power theme for this issue, I immediately felt a relation and wanted to share my experiences and what power means to me.

Power has been a definite theme in my life. But, I haven’t always felt as though I had power. But, if I can find the power to take the negative parts of my life and turn them around, then anyone can find power to turn negative things around. When you pole dance, come with an open heart and mind, leaving any negativity behind, and put yourself into all you do. Since, I began in the pole industry, I’ve been referred to as a, “true pioneer of the sport for the male gender.” At age 17, I began as an exotic dancer, as so many pole pioneers have. As recent as 2009, a male pole dancer had never even been recognized, nor had a male pole dancer ever been featured in traditional media or been allowed to compete in any of the up and coming events globally. Working my way to the top, I became the first male to truly set the stage for the male gender in pole fitness and sports. Really quick, I want to set the record straight regarding some rumors that were circulating about me. Normally, I pay no attention to catty gossip and rumors spread about me, but due to the number of people that kept asking me about it, I have to address it: No, I was not in jail, nor have I ever been in jail. During my absence from the pole world, I was going through some deeply challenging impediments and lots of big things were happening to me. And, I needed to take some time for myself.

One of the most traumatic scenarios in my life occurred. I was at a party one night. People were getting crazy and having a great time. I decided to have a drink with my friends. The next thing I knew, I had been raped. Someone had added the rape drug known as GHB or Rufilin to my drink, and taken advantage of me in the worst possible way. What became one of my ultimate nightmares then lead to a long silence in my personal life and in my pole career. I felt extremely angry, confused and looking for refuge. I wanted a clean slate and to start over. Most people know me by my nickname, “BAD AZZ”. Recently, many people have seen my name as “D’Lorian Fox” rather than “Josiah Grant”. The reasoning behind the name change was because, on top of being raped, I also

“none of us are ever powerless; we all posses power within ourselves that allows us to overcome some of life’s toughest obstacles.” experienced a falling out with my biological father. My father had previously been a huge part of my life. Every time I heard my last name, which was the same as my father’s last name, it reminded me of my father and reminded me of all the recent tragedies in my life. That just seemed to add frustration and reminded me of painful circumstances. After consulting with

Once I changed my name, there was some confusion on how to properly address me and which name I prefer to be called. I loved the new sense of empowerment I felt being labeled “D’Lorian Fox”, yet I had made a name for myself in the industry as “Josiah BAD AZZ Grant”. Honestly, I liked being both D’Lorian and Josiah. One constant I decided to include in both names is “BAD AZZ” . Regardless of what you call me, I’ll always be “BAD AZZ”. I decided not to completely disown Josiah Grant, yet still keep D’Lorian Fox a part of my image and a part of my name. For the first time ever, I felt ready to tackle the rest of the pain and anger that had attempted to take over my life. Many people who deal with major life tragedies turn to vices, such as drugs, alcohol and even revenge to help them cope. I decided to choose a different path. I have always had a strong connection with children and I wanted to find a way to help those in need. I decided to volunteer at a school for youth who had undergone rape and abuse in their lives. I grew close to many of the kids in the program, and was able to share my experiences and my recovery. Through this experience, I was able to begin the healing process. In addition, I attribute my ability to overcome tragedy to the support of my family and closest friends. My family and friends were there for me, and helped me get through this time in my life. Without them, I never could have been able to survive. I’m especially grateful for my mother

my family, Fox was chosen as the appropriate replacement for my last name. And, once I changed my last night, I thought, “Why not change the first name too,” and decided on the first name D’Lorian.

and my sister, Breezelle. The best advice I can give to those suffering tragic life events: Do not be ashamed. It’s not your fault. There’s help out there, and there is life after abuse. In fact, I’ve come back stronger and better than ever! As far as the world of pole goes, I’m back in it full force. Pole dancing is something I’m just meant to do. It’s also an important part of my continued healing. I will continue to compete, but I’m not going to compromise the person I am. I am staying true to my roots. Myself and so many other male pole artists have tried to emulate the styles of the female icons we have seen on the pole. I’m going to completely be myself and just do my thing.

Though I’m obviously very passionate about pole sports and athletics, I actually have many multifaceted talents and abilities. One of my talents also includes singing. I’ve actually been working on my music career. My music style is what I describe as “Pop music with a touch of Soul”. I’m looking forward to my first single coming out, which is to be released on iTunes in early 2013.

made me feel powerless. But none of us are ever powerless; we all posses power within ourselves that allows us to overcome some of life’s toughest obstacles. It wasn’t easy, and I couldn’t have done it alone. Through family, friends, community service and a passion for the things I love to do, I know that all things are possible. =

Power greatly changed my life for the better. I’ve had many challenging struggles that

In addition to competing, touring and giving workshops, I’m releasing my new DVD series teaching exotic floor work, flow, fluidity, pole tricks and combos later this summer. My website will launch in August of this year and my DVDs will be available for purchase on my website. I also have an upcoming Artistic Blackout tour, which started in Texas and then has me traveling all over the US and Australia.

HE POWER OF POL

IN ADDITION TO ENJOYING the power

help them find it. And, to quote Audrey,

WAYS THE POLE HAS POWERED MY LIFE:

In light of this issue’s power theme, I decided to share my story. My name is Rena Skeen and I currently reside just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. At age 56, I have found great inspiration, confidence and a form of power for my life through pole. I began pole training initially in 2009 as a result of the urging of my daughter, Audrey. Audrey suffers from PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome), which causes her a great deal of pain. As a result of her involvement with pole, Audrey has enjoyed an increase in health, the ability to deal with the daily pain, and the utter enjoyment of how beautiful she feels on the pole. Therefore, I was inspired by the perseverance of my daughter with her pole training, and convinced that even at “my advanced age,” I too could gain from the benefits of pole fitness.
Despite my newly-acquired enthusiasm for pole fitness, my extensive work and travel schedule kept me from being able to be dedicated to classes on a consistent basis. Eventually, however, I was able to adjust things in order to commit myself more fully

to my passion for learning. I love the classes and it never feels like working out. In May 2011, after much exploration of pole from the student perspective, Audrey and I made the decision to become pole fitness instructors through Studio Soiree’s program. I teach beginning level, and I’m probably at a beginning-plus level in my personal practice. I’m comfortable with the level of my skills, and more importantly, in my own skin. I believe that you can stay in the beginning level and still achieve fitness, and the body-mindspirit connection. I will continue to improve and learn, yet I’m not concerned about how fast I get there or even if I get there. I’m just enjoying the journey! Audrey and I both realize that it’s not about what you can do or how fast you achieve certain moves on the pole. I enjoy watching the competitive level performers, but I realize it’s not about everybody trying to become competitive; it’s about developing ourselves and taking it as far as we can, wherever that may be. = To email Rena: rmskeen55@me.com.

When given a last minute request to change the cover shoot date and time, Faith went out of her to accommodate. Her manager April immediately rearranged Faith’s schedule and both of them drove from Ventura County to Orange County for the photo shoot. When asked to bring some wardrobe options in which she is comfortable wearing in order to showcase her true personality, Faith laughed and said, “Don’t say that! My everyday look is very Wayne (from Wayne’s World)... I’ll show up wearing my glasses, trucker Hat, white tank, shorts and cowboy boots!” Now that’s refreshing to hear, especially from someone who has invested a lifetime as being awesome.

training hard. Faith proves her dedication and hard work towards aerial and pole sports through her rigorous training schedule. She described her daily fitness regimen as long and intense, and she has the physique and skill level to show for it.

Faith didn’t waste any time getting started. Since the age of two, Faith has been hitting the stage and performing. She was enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dance, and aspired

But then, Faith experienced an unexpected tragedy. At age 15, Faith was in a lifethreatening car accident and her physicians said she would never be able to dance or compete in sports again. Faith decided she was not accepting that JUNK FOOD WEAKNESS as her fate. Instead of giving up, she “You could lose a hand got serious and if you are holding a MUSIC CONFESSION focused. “That Cadbury Cream Egg! Consequently, her efforts came with a price. “I was forced into full reconstructive shoulder surgery immediately after that competition,” Faith shares. “I had a year of recovery before I could get back to training, let alone even look at a pole or a gym.” Luckily her persistent and determined nature pushed Faith “If I had chosen any through another successful recovery. Her success in those competitions secured her a spot in the CPDC (California Pole Dance Championship) event in 2011. As far as her future competition goals, Faith assures, “I plan to continue my training and efforts toward pursuing various titles.” She hinted toward the possibility of being part of the judging circuit. No matter what, Faith Jay Daniels isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, regardless of the obstacles that may arise. In addition to her competitive interests, Faith’s pole athleticism has brought her a plethora of other opportunities. She has had the privilege of being a part of events such as Kelly Yvonne’s Girl Next Door production, Kelly Maglia’s Catalyst, the filming of reality TV’s Vertical Pole Challenge, Emilee Wilson’s/Exscape TV’s Polemasters, Good Hurt’s Medicinal Mondays, Rock The Pole, Oakley Pro Am Golf Tournament and even as a guest of the pole at Playboy Mansion parties and events. But Faith’s talents aren’t just limited to the pole. She has also enjoyed a successful modeling and acting career aside from her numerous pole ventures. She has made appearances on CNN, CBS, Fox News, VGTV, Telemundo and was featured on the Enrique Iglesias’s Dirty Dancer music video featuring Usher and Lil Wayne. Despite all of her fame and success, Faith manages to remain grounded and genuine. She attributes much of her authenticity to her parents’ positive upbringing. Her family was supportive of her efforts and offered her many opportunities to learn, be exposed to cultural activities and excel at the things she enjoyed while growing up. Beyond her love of fitness and pole sports, Faith has an interest for gemstones. So much so that she launched an online jewelry business (www.etsy.com/shop/WetKrome). And, surprisingly, Faith confesses, “If I had chosen any other path besides pole, I would be traveling the world as an art and antiquities dealer.” No matter what she chooses to pursue, there’s no doubt that Faith will be successful. THE POWER IN

BY PATRICIA HOCKIN

PASSION W

e all need a little pep talk once in awhile. When we share our positive words and advice with those around us, it inspires others to keep going, try even harder and rekindle that flame we all have for the pole and the reason we started. We are all real women, with real jobs, real kids, real curves, and real lives. We have given ourselves permission to focus solely on ourselves, if only for an hour or two each week. We escape to our poles and unleash our passionate personas. We express and explore our beautiful bodies. We dance. We cheer each other on. We celebrate our gorgeous shapes and abilities! We don’t dance to please others. We don’t take off our clothes. We don’t apologize for our curves or our bodies or our sexuality. We don’t apologize for our confidence or strength. Pole dancing liberates and inspires us. Recently, Miss Pole celebrated a landmark in growth and reached 11,000 women whom have been helped, instructed and inspired by Miss Pole. Each of the 11,000 lovely ladies, that have taken classes at Miss Pole, started this empowering journey one spin at a time! I am proud to be part of this movement and hope many more women will join us! No apologies, just power!” =

OFFICIAL INDUSTRY UPDATE ON THE

OLYMPIC POLE

SPORTS PROGRESS

BY CHASTITIE LUJAN

THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF TALK, SINCE THE FIRST PETITION BEGAN CIRCULATING IN 2009, ABOUT POLE FITNESS BEING ADDED TO THE LIST OF OLYMPIC SPORTS. INITIALLY, THE PETITION LAID OUT GOALS FOR BECOMING AN ACCEPTED PART OF THE ELITE GAMES BY 2012. Given the time frame of Olympic progress and acceptance, as well as a long list of items that needed to be addressed, we quickly realized that 2012 was a lofty goal - as far as achieving full acceptance into the Olympic Games. However, 2012 has become a great time to begin our official journey. Regardless of your personal feelings on pole sports being in the Olympics, it is progressing 40

towards induction into this competitive arena. PDI has done several articles over the past three years to address various aspects of the Olympic topic. It is important to understand that there very specific things need to happen within a very detailed time frame for the Olympic Dream to be achieved. The first item needed was an international governing body that would be powered by ethics, policies and procedures. The International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF) was created to address and oversee each of the requirements for Olympic inclusion of pole sports while maintaining a strict business and administrative outline for handling the details of the Olympic timetable. The IPSF consists of several governing bodies within its infrastructure and comprise various focuses. The bottom line is there’s a ton of work being done by a lot of very

capable professionals, more of which can be learned about at: www.polesports.org The first World Pole Sports Championship (which adheres to ‘Olympic’ standards set forth by the IPSF) will be held this July in London, right alongside the Olympic Summer Games 2012. Key decision makers involved with new test sports decisions, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will be attending the Championship to see the current stance on pole fitness and how the athletes conduct themselves. This shows we are progressing as an industry. Here’s a quick summary of where we stand as an industry and what to expect this year during the Olympics: Invitations have been sent to the top qualified athletes and those who have accepted are shown on the IPSF site.

The Judges applications have been posted and the IPSP are vetting judges. Those who get accepted will be shown on the IPSF website soon. The venue for the World Pole Sports Championship has been chosen and the IPSF is meticulously working to organize the competition. The IPFS Membership Program has been created for federations of various countries to apply for inclusion in the IPSF and in the World Pole Sports Championship Games. It is still early yet three countries have already applied and many federations are still developing through the process. Being a member of the federation is an important piece of the Olympic acceptance overall. IPFS members have an ethics guideline comprised of Olympic pole sports rules, regulations, and judging criteria. Various Olympic organizations are invited to the WPSC in London. The IPFA continually works with the WADA (World AntiDoping Agency) to set up testing regulations for competitors in future events in order to comply with Olympic standards.

NOW THAT THE IPFS AND SO MANY OTHERS ARE WORKING HARD AND TAKING THE APPROPRIATE STEPS TOWARD POLE SPORTS INCLUSION IN THE OLYMPICS, THIS DREAM HAS AMPLE OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME A REALITY.

Now that the IPFS and so many others are working hard and taking the appropriate steps toward pole sports inclusion in the Olympics, this dream has ample opportunity to become a reality. If you are interested furthering the Olympic effort through the IPSF and your local and national agencies, please contact IPSF through: www.polesports.org IPSF Pres. Tim Trautman and Vice-President KT Coates summarized the progress and assisted in providing this Olympic update. =

T WHAT EXACTLY IS

THE INTERNATIONAL POLE CONVENTION? BY JESSALYNN MEDIARY

here is no other event in the World like The International Pole Convention. First, let’s look at the definition of convention. The dictionary defines the word convention like so:

CON·VEN·TION (NOUN) [KUHN-VEN-SHUHN] 1. a meeting or formal assembly, as of representatives or delegates, for discussion of and action on particular matters of common concern. The International Pole Convention is the biggest Pole event in the World, attracting guests from over 20 countries and six continents. There are representatives from organizations such as The Pole Fitness Association, Pole Dance Community, International Pole Dance Association and many others. With more than 15 seminars, there are many topics in which to be discussed. Live debates will go on

stage allowing two opposing parties to voice the purpose of their decisions, such as women only studios vs. men and women studios. There is also a debate on the sexy vs. fit side of Pole Fitness going to the Olympics. The purpose of these debates is not to create argument or a negative attitude about either party, but to develop new ways to grow the Pole Community. New concepts and strategies to help the sport attract more people and be accepted into the Olympics will be discussed. There is also a seminar on ‘Support Group: Men in Pole’. This seminar is for all men in the Pole Community to come together and talk about their comforts and discomforts in Pole Studios. All female Polers are invited to sit in on the seminar but not participate in the discussion. The exercise here is to also practice ‘listening’. It’s important to understand your customers and this gives the men the opportunity to be heard. This will be a great seminar for studio owners and managers to take the input back to their studios.

43

2. U.S. Politics, a representative party assembly to nominate candidates and adopt platforms and party rules. The Pole Fitness Association will be holding a Name That Move game in the large theater. The purpose of this is to help the Pole Community to devise a standard system of moves. If the Pole Community calls the moves by the same terms, people will be more likely to understand and execute the moves more safely. Building a standard set of moves will help to also recognize the moves in competition and maybe one day… the Olympics. 3. an agreement, compact, or contract. 4. an international agreement, especially one dealing with a specific matter, as postal service or copyright.

44

This convention, brought to you by The International Pole Convention Company, strives to: Always bring in the World’s best Polers to host workshops Provide the most talented fitness experts to speak Continue to grow the Pole Community on an International scale The more people who hear about Pole, and believe in the Pole community, the more people who will participate in the Convention. Our organization agrees to continue to be the number one choice in large-scale Pole events. With more than 60 individual Pole Stages, and over 10 event rooms, we believe that when it comes to Pole events, this is one you will not want to miss!

WHAT TO EXPECT If you’ve never attended the International Pole Convention before, you’re probably a little curious as to what to expect. I want to paint a picture of what this year’s convention will be like. Here’s what to expect: You’ll need to bring more than just a suitcase and some clothing - You’ll need a smile, an open-mind and a good night’s rest. This is the only Convention in the World that does not involve a competition, and even though some the World’s best Polers are attending, no one ever feels the pressure or stress that a person may feel at a competition. You’ll notice that no one is sizing you up or staring you down. Everyone is hugging, shaking hands and making new friends. This convention is all about the pole community!

In the workshops, you will find an atmosphere of people helping one another. In the vendor area, you’ll see vendors showing off their newest products and services. The theater will dazzle you with the most heart-pounding performances and jaw dropping tricks. Performers of all talents and from places around the World will perform. In fact, one of the biggest attractions are the group performances on the Sunday. Groups from studios everywhere perform their best their moves and always appears to be a great variety show. There are more than 50 workshops at the 2012 Convention, which is the highest number of workshops at any Pole event ever. Each year, the International Pole Convention sets the bar very high with fresh, creative concepts, new Pole stars and the most innovative Pole tricks. The Pole stars will enjoy the private parties as guests, pictures and videos are allowed all over the event, and applauses are heard with the success with every new move. Since there is no competition at the event, all guests and featured stars enjoy meeting and greeting with guests, taking photos, and sharing their newest moves with one another. The only challenging events are the Guinness record breaking, the Spins & Tricks battle and a possible Headstand/Handstand Battle. These events are to challenge the guests, not the Pole stars. It’s all about the Pole Community having fun and supporting the growth of our community. “Pats on the back” and “high-fives” for a job well done, will be the activities you notice the most. NEWEST CONCEPTS AT CONVENTION Costume Decorating With Amber Ray: Unless you have an extremely large budget, sometimes costumes for a competition can be a bigger challenge than the competition itself. Amber Ray, from Australia, always dazzles the stage sporting the freshest and trendiest costumes. Many people wouldn’t guess that she made the costumes herself. Remember how much fun arts and crafts use to be? Get ready to decorate an amazing costume while having a ton of fun. She’s going to show you how to stitch, glue and dazzle a top and bottom. Bad Kitty’s Pole Fit fashion line will be providing the bottoms. Each guest should bring in her own bra top. All decorating supplies are provided in this workshop. Pole Debates: Panel discussions really bring Facebook and Twitter alive. Let’s just say it puts the ‘different strokes for different folks’ idea on the stage. Two parties with opposing ideas will discuss a specific topic

Guinness Record Breaking: The longest held inverted elbow-hold straddle is no easy task for any Poler. The record currently stands at 51 seconds; it may seem easy to beat for the most advanced Polers, but give it a whirl. Your body cannot slide down the Pole at all and you cannot adjust yourself at all either. The record will definitely be beaten at the Convention, but everyone is really skeptical as to how long this can really be held. Even the best can have a bad day. Maybe an underdog will be discovered. THE CONVENTION PASSES Both the Limited and All Access Convention Passes get you into the event from Friday through Sunday. All of the seminars are included with the purchase of your ticket and there will be additional free Pole workshops available, as well as access to all of the five different Pole shows, debates, and the Guinness record breaking. The All Access Convention Pass: Includes access to two private parties around the Convention. There is a private party on Friday, June 22nd from 9:00-11:00pm. The party will consist of a cash bar, jazz band and balloon room décor. The famous balloon artist, Addi Somekh, will be decorating this event with his fabulous balloon art. On Saturday, June 23rd, from 10:00pm-2:00am, all guests will receive a complimentary cocktail at the

“YOU’LL NEED TO BRING MORE THAN JUST A SUITCASE AND SOME CLOTHING - YOU’LL NEED A SMILE, AN OPEN-MIND AND A GOOD NIGHT’S REST.” chosen. A “Question and Answer” session will be held on the stage, allowing studio owners, managers, and/or students participating in the debate to talk about why their concept works for their studio. Or, maybe they’ll discover new ways to integrate new concepts into their existing system. Audience members will not take part in the debate and a neutral facilitator will lead the discussion. One of the hot debate topics is ‘No men allowed’. Another topic of debate is ‘Sexy versus Fit For The Olympics’. This debate will challenge the two parties difference of opinions and discuss how they can continue to grow their companies and push to get the sport further to the Olympics. Hopefully, the audience develops their own opinions and really looks at both parties’ stances in the most unbiased ways. No party will come out on top, as there is no wrong answer.

bar, and dance the night away to a DJ and live entertainment. You must be 21 years of age or older to purchase this pass. The Limited Convention Pass: Perfect for anyone that is not 21+ years of age yet. This allows the younger or early to bed guests to participate in all of the shows, but cannot participate in the private parties. The Showcase of Stars: If you have a Convention Pass, this show is included. This is the Show everyone talks about all year long. The Pole Stars perform their famous tricks. and because they’re not competing, they always seem to put on their best show ever. The Showcase is Saturday, June 23rd at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7:00pm. If you’ve never seen a Pole Show, this will blow you away. =

Oh my, pole dance is booming! What a delight it is to see so many newcomers inspired and falling in love with pole. There are thousands trying pole for the first time, and thousands coming back for more, because they love it, feel challenged by it, and are EXCITED about it!

I LOVE THE ELEMENTS OF EXCITEMENT THAT STUDENTS BRING TO A STUDIO ENVIRONMENT; THEIR ENERGY, CREATIVITY, JOY AND BONDING JUST TO NAME A FEW. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES EXCITEMENT PRESENTS ITSELF IN WAYS THAT ARE NOT CONDUCIVE TO SAFE OR RESPECTFUL LEARNING. How many times have you seen a student so excited to learn pole that he or she launches into tricks he or she is not ready for? Or, how many of you have been in pole class when the instructor is trying to explain a move,

yet Excited Ellie or Chatty Cathy can’t stop talking? Maybe she’s talking about pole, or maybe it’s about her weekend, her wedding, or her wheaten terrier. Whether the content is relevant or not, it can be distracting and inappropriate for the situation and environment. This often poses a difficult and uncomfortable challenge for instructors and other students. There are a variety of ‘remedies’ I have seen employed in order to address distractive behavior: The “SSShhhh!” method; the “Glare at Chatty Cathy” method; maybe the “Wait It Out” approach; the “Kindly Ask Chatty Cathy to Stop” maneuver by further explaining that everyone is waiting for instruction to begin; and even making the effort to engage Chatty Cathy by asking her to join in the instruction or demonstrate the move for the others. These are just a handful of the most popular responses to diffusing classroom distractions. The problem is that each of these “solutions” is flawed, and can often cause embarrassment or hard feelings for the instructor, Chatty Cathy, or surrounding students.

I wish to share a different approach that supports and embraces the very reason Chatty Cathy is chatting. After all, she is chatting because she is happy and excited; we want to address the issue of distraction in a way that recognizes her love for pole and at the same time appropriately channels her energy. This solution works whether you are a student or an instructor, and can be easily utilized by anyone in the room. How do I, as an instructor, solve the problem? Instead of pushing the student away, pull her closer, which never fails!
As an instructor, simply continue with explanation, walk toward Chatty Cathy with a kind, sincere acknowledgment and pull the student close to your side. I have delivered entire lessons while clutching a student close. Understanding her excitement and pulling her closer will work every time, for everyone, but it will leave you embracing her excitement, not punishing her for it. After all, pole is a celebration! As a student, you can do the same: smile, walk over, put your arm around Chatty Cathy’s shoulder and continue listening to the instructor deliver instruction.

Students, you can assist in getting the most out of your pole classes by listening to the direction of your instructor and attempting moves that are appropriate for your level of training. Do not take unnecessary risks. Pole dance is a MARATHON...not a race. We, as instructors, want you in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and beyond. Pole is truly a sport and art form you can participate in safely and with the utmost excitement for the rest of your life! =

HILE POLE FITNESS IS DEFINITELY my shiny new toy, I am not new to the fitness world. I have spent a lot of time and money trying to get myself into shape over the years. I am six feet tall, so regardless of my weight, I’ve always been a “big girl”. I gained significant weight in my 20’s while in college and my highest weight was almost 350 pounds. On March 17, 2004, at the age of 27, I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and lost165 pounds.

power into my life. However, I think I’ve limited what I allow myself to do because I’ve always made the excuse, “I’m sure I’m too big to do that”. For example, at my studio, there is a girl named Jen, who has the most amazing body, flexibility and strength. She can do all the things on the pole that I want to do! She’s also the size of one of my legs. After observing Jen, I began asking myself, “Even if I was in the best shape of my life, would I even be able to do what she does?’ This question led to further self-analysis. In consideration of size, I would guess that Jen, though made of pure muscle, is less than five feet tall and probably weighs 100 pounds or less. I am more than twice her size! Which leads me to the natural question, “Can a six foot tall body hang off a pole and do all the things that a five foot tall body is able to do?’ Obviously, 100 pounds is easier to lift than 200 pounds, aside from any other contributing factors. Along those lines, it’s important to consider that a muscular, toned body will hold up a lot more than an underdeveloped, flabby physique, regardless of the number of pounds in question.

POWERFUL Bodies, Powerful Minds BY LORI MYERS

Even after such a drastic weight loss intervention, staying fit continues to be a struggle. I am now 33 years old and have gained about 40 pounds. The need to find a long lasting way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is very real. So, I decided it was time to find a new, fun way to lose weight and get in shape. That is what brought me to Twirly Girls Pole Fitness in Pleasanton, California. Clearly, at over 200 pounds, I am not the “normal” vision of a pole dancer. Twirly Girls’ owner, Bel, said that when she met me, she immediately thought of a Viking warrior. I get an image of a strong woman with long flowing hair, carrying a bow and arrow or a sword wearing a fur-lined bikini. I can live with that image! Because of my height, I am often called ‘Amazon’, so it’s not too far from something I’ve pictured in my mind before. I may never have a slim, dancer’s physique, or a super-toned, muscular body; but I will always be me. So, who am I in the pole-dancing world? I am fun and silly. I like to dance crazy to loud, dirty rock songs. The pole definitely brings

So, I guess the question is still, “Am I setting myself up to fail by thinking or hoping that I too could hold the poses that Jen does, even if I was in the same shape?” To address these issues, I reflected on a recent conversation I had with Amber Richard regarding “height” and it’s relation to success on the pole. Obviously, Amber has not let being taller than most pole dancers inhibit her vision or success. She gave me a whole new respect for what taller bodies can accomplish. The point is that “power” is obviously both a physical, as well as a mental attribute. In consideration of all of the above, my new mission is to get myself into better shape so that I too can do all of the cool pole tricks that Bel, Jen and Amber (just to name a few) can do. I don’t want to hold myself back anymore. Most important is knowledge that no matter how powerful our bodies may be, it is our minds that guide our thoughts and actions. Powerful bodies are a natural product of participating in pole dance for fitness; yet, powerful minds are the key to success, on the pole, as in life. RHIANNAN NICHOLE’S

PREMIER POLE ONLINE BY CELESTE AYERS & RHIANNAN NICHOLE Like many other power moves, mastering the execution of the Iron X is a sure sign that you’ve made it as an advanced poler.

THERE IS NO DENYING THE AMOUNT OF STRENGTH AND PERSEVERANCE ONE MUST COMMIT BEFORE TASTING THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABORS; and boy, does it taste good. Looking back at yourself in the mirror as you hold this iconic pose and perhaps even

58

shouting “oh my god I’m doing it, I’m doing it, I’m doing it!” is the reason we put ourselves through all this pain in the first place, isn’t it? So here’s to many successful and perfected Iron Xs, and the transitions out of them, of course. And just so there’s no confusion, this breakdown assumes that you already know how to get into a basic Twisted Grip Aysha. Happy poling!

Assuming you are already in a Twisted Grip Ayasha, as seen here, squeeze every muscle in your body to ensure a solid, static, safe position. Point through the tops of your feet and squeeze your glutes together to turn your legs out at the hips, sending energy out through your toes. Engage and contract your entire core from the outside in like a corset. Actively pull

with the top arm, focusing on squeezing the muscles down the side of your back, rather than with the shoulder. Actively push with the bottom arm, focusing on pushing out through the chest, rather than settling your weight into the shoulder joint. Never hold your breath. Your muscles need blood and oxygen to expand and contract, so breathe!

Keeping what will become your top leg (right if your right arm is high and left if your left arm is high) in it’s original starting position from the Aysha, begin to push your bottom leg (same as bottom arm) straight back from your body as if pushing into a front split. Be sure to keep all muscles engaged still actively pulling down through your back with the top arm and pushing

Constantly reminding yourself to keep every muscle in your body activated, as mentioned before, continue to push the bottom leg straight back. Eventually, and in one fluid motion, turn out your bottom leg and open up the hips. Allow your top leg to follow and begin to turn your chest and hips forward, in the direction of your audience. As you bring your

out through your chest with the bottom arm, core cinched, and glutes together. As your bottom leg extends further away, your core will take more weight, making it harder to breathe. Stay calm, breathe through your nose, and contract your abdominals HARD with each exhale

weight down from the pole, your obliques (abdominal muscles on the side of your belly) will begin to take more of your weight so shift some of your focus there. Think about squeezing your top hip into your top arm pit and don’t forget about the pull and push through your back and chest with your arms.

As you drop and open the bottom leg, allow the top leg to follow. Continue to squeeze your obliques and focus on a steady breath. Once your torso is perpendicular to the pole, turn your hips to face front and continue to actively squeeze your glutes together, turning both legs out from the hips and sending energy out through your toes. The Iron X can be performed with legs parallel

to the pole, as shown here, or in a V position, as shown below. Either variation looks equally impressive but allows you as the dancer to demonstrate your own personal style. As always, practice this move as many times on the left as you do the right and remember, it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

59

1) Hold your Iron X long enough for your audience to digest what they’re seeing. 2) Keeping both legs open, tilt your hips back up to face the ceiling. 3) Pull your entire torso into the pole and hook the top knee just above the top hand while dropping the bottom leg away as if to perform a front split. 4) Bring the bottom leg down, meeting the inside of the thigh to the pole. Extend the top arm out and push through the bottom arm to complete Jasmine.

AS WITH ANY POLE TRICK, TRANSITIONING FROM A MOVE IS JUST AS, IF NOT MORE, IMPORTANT AS THE MOVE ITSELF. HERE ARE 2 BASIC WAYS TO TRANSITION FROM IRON X. FIRST, TO JASMINE AND SECOND, TO INSIDE LEG HANG. THERE ARE MANY OTHER WAYS TO GET IN AND OUT OF IRON X (WHICH WE MAY COVER IN A FUTURE ISSUE), BUT FOR NOW, LET’S JUST STICK TO THE BASICS. 60

1) Starting position shown from rear view for better understanding. 2) After pulling up from Iron X, pull the top leg toward your face and drop the bottom leg back for balance. 3) Pull your torso into the pole and push with the bottom arm to bring the top (inside) shoulder around and through, ending with the pole across your side and middle back. Hook the top (inside) leg around the pole. 4) Grip with your side and leg to end in Inside Leg Hang.

PRODUCT REVIEW PLATINUM STAGES 38 MM POLE more products are emerging. The benefit for those using pole products is that the demand for better quality and improved technology also grows. Those who are in the business of developing and providing pole equipment have been forced to stay at the top of their game and continue to invest in research and consider the feedback of professionals and casual polers alike in order to remain active in the industry. As a result, customers have a larger variety of viable options when considering their choice of a pole that meets their specific needs.

AS THE WORLD OF POLE SPORTS and fitness continues to grow at an alarming rate, more and

As an example of the vast growth in quality pole products, we chose to feature one of the newest variations on the market, the 38mm pole. Although this is not necessarily a new idea in many parts of the world, especially the European Region, the smaller size is just now entering other markets, such as the U.S. and Canada.

PHOTOGRAPHY

As one of the largest pole equipment manufacturers in the N. American Region, Platinum Stages is the first to offer the 38mm, or 1.5 inch, pole to pole enthusiasts. Platinum Stages has a longstanding reputation of providing high quality pole products to patrons both inside and outside the pole fitness industry. In fact, Platinum Stages has been around since 2001, which is longer than any other major pole company. Their decade of experience and knowledge has helped them maintain their position as one of the world’s best providers of dance poles, and the new 38mm is a welcomed addition. Currently, there are three size options for poles. The 2 inch, or 50mm, size has historically been one of the most popular options as the traditional standard. This trend began to change with the evolution of the pole fitness industry. As pole performers and competitors continue to emerge, and each athlete’s skills on the

pole become more challenging, the need for better grip and increased safety contribute largely to the variations in diameter size. The 1.75 inch, or 45mm, pole became a huge hit starting in 2007. In 2009, European and Oceanic Regions of the world introduced the 1.5 inch, 38mm, pole for professional and athletic use. Now, pole athletes everywhere are enjoying the benefits of working with the smaller diameter.

So, What about legs? When considering leg-grip around a 38mm pole, it will definitely be different from using larger diameter poles. Obviously, a larger circumference pole is more comfortable on the legs. However, the ability to grip with the legs is equally important, and is actually improved as well with a more form-fitting pole. So, although comfort may be affected, both grip and safety will be better.

What are the benefits of a smaller-diameter pole?

There are definitely some things to think about when it comes to sizing your pole. It’s great that we now have the option in our industry to truly individualize our equipment. Even studios can offer their students an opportunity to try different sizes by installing equipment of various diameter sizes. Allowing students access to different sizes, as well as metal options, and having them rotate periodically, lets them get a feel for what really works for each one of them.

GRIP: The obvious answer is increased grip. In both male and female genders, the average adult hand has a grip-circumference of 1.6 inches when measured from index finger to thumb. For ultimate grip around the full circumference of the pole, your index finger and thumb should be able to touch. Since the index finger is typically the farthest from the reach of the thumb (when wrapped around a circular object), this measurement allows for all of the fingers to reach the thumb. This allows for a firm and complete hold on the pole, hence resulting in better grip. COMFORT: Your hand is most comfortable when it fits fully around a pole when gripping, allowing for peace of mind and ease of use. When you go to choose your next pole size, consider your options, and customize the size specific to you. SAFETY: Better grip and comfort naturally equal an improvement in safety. The ability to fully extend your hand around the pole allows less room for slipping and sliding. Also, remember that your legs are much stronger than your hands. However, the majority of difficult and dangerous tricks performed on the pole require one’s full body weight to be supported by his/her arms, thus relying on solid handgrip. All of those handsprings, iron X’s and human flags will be more safely performed when the athlete’s pole fits his or her hand correctly.

PLATINUM STAGES is definitely ahead of the game, especially in regards to pole sizing, by producing a quality 38mm pole. Now, those in the market upgrading or reconsidering their pole needs have better access to more options most suitable for each individual. Platinum Stages offers a topnotch product that is made in the USA (though it is available worldwide) with authentic stainless steel or genuine brass. The 38mm is available as a onepiece permanent, removable or freestanding pole option, with both spinning and static capabilities. With all of the technology, improvements and variety in our equipment, there has never been a better time to customize your pole to best suit your needs. =

Divide hair into sections (the number of sections and how much hair you want in each section is up to you; some people like a couple of big sections which creates a couple of big twists, others like lots of sections which creates several little twists all throughout hair).

Step 4 Step 1 If you can start with day old, not freshly washed hair, that’s best for updo’s. Before you begin, make sure to brush hair evenly until smooth and tangle free.

Step 2 Take the Hair Modifying Dust (or similar styling powder), and sprinkle on the roots of hair. With your fingers, manipulate the hair dust throughout the roots to build volume and create “lift”. 64

Step 3

Take each section of hair, twist the section at the root, pinning halfway up with a bobby pin and/or hair pin, allowing the some of the ends to loosely hang out from the pin. For longer hair, you may need to do two twists per section rather than just one twist. Twist and pin each section of hair until all of the hair sections are twisted and pinned. If needed, additional bobby pins can be used to secure the twists.

completed look

Once all of hair is twisted and pinned, spray, spray and spray some more with hairspray.

Step 6 To finish this look, sweep bangs aside and add a bobby pin if needed for extra security.

Step 7 Additional options: You can add a hairpiece, glitter, tinsel, clips or any hair accessory that suits you for added pizzazz. In this photo, we chose this beautiful, elegant black feather. Summer Makeup Tips BY JANET WANG

YOU SHOULD KNOW Makeup artist Janet Wang, the makeup artist extraordinaire for the competitors at the Pole2Pole Cup USA, shares the five, hottest Summer 2012 makeup tips. Ms. Wang ensures you’ll make a gorgeous statement on or off the pole with these trends:

HOT TREND #1 BRONZED FACES WITH PRETTY PINK BLUSHING CHEEKS

Often times, I notice that many girls (or guys for that matter) make the mistake of putting bronzer and/or blush directly on the apples of their cheeks. Bronzer is best used in the places where the sun would normally hit the skin if one were to be outside in the sun – usually the forehead, tip of the nose, chin, across the cheeks including the cheekbones, and the sides of the face. Now, when it comes to blush, I can understand why a person could be trying to achieve the doll face with pink or rosy cheeks and a white face. Unless you are trying to achieve this doll face look, the key to brushing on blush, and especially applying bronzer, is to use a fan brush and follow just underneath the cheekbone. This will give the cheek definition and a nice pop. 66

HOT TREND #4

Red lipstick can make fair skin look much paler than it may actually be, so keep that in mind when applying red lipstick. Red lipstick is definitely a bold, “notice me” color. If that’s the look you are after, then choose a nice, strong, red lipstick. It’s a risqué color and often I hear girls ask, “I love red, but which red is right for me?”

This summer, the look appears to be bright, bold colors on the eyes. When using more than one eye shadow color on the eyelids, you want to pick colors that complement each other. Pink complements purple, yellow complements orange, gold complements teal, and teal complements blue. Use the lighter of the two colors on the inside of your eye and the darker one towards the end of your eye. Then, take a blending brush and blend the middle to give a nice transition.

One trend that seems to be a summer favorite is shimmery, sparkling skin, which includes the entire body, not just the face. There are plenty of body shimmer products out there, so make sure you pick the appropriate body shimmer for your skin type. For dryer skin, a shimmery or glittery body lotion is best, since sprays, gels and powders can dry out the skin. Make sure you blend the lotion evenly with the palms of the hands to avoid a “streaking” effect. For oily skin, you want to use a powder or body shimmer spray since the warmer weather already tends to make skin oiler than normal and body lotion adds unwanted moisture. When using a powder, make sure you’re applying with a big, fluffy brush. Apply the shimmer all over the face and body using big, circular motions to blend evenly.

RED LIPSTICK

I say, “It depends how dramatic you want your lips to look.” Red colors come in blue and pink undertones or orange and yellow undertones. Blue is the opposite color of orange. If you wear a lot of pink and mauve lipsticks and are afraid to try to a true red, start with a red with pink undertones. It won’t feel like such a dramatic difference. If you wear a lot of browns, try a red lipstick with brown undertones for a more subtle switch to wearing red lipstick. If you want a darker red, choose a red lipstick with a bluer tone, this means a red/purple lipstick. If you want a red that really stands out, go with a rose red, red/orange, or red/ yellow lipstick.

HOT TREND #5 FALSE EYELASHES

False eyelashes are so “in” for Summer 2012, and it doesn’t matter if the fake lashes are long and lengthy or full and thick, dramatic eyelashes are the entire rave. One of the most common complaints I hear from women is, “I love the way fake eyelashes look, but I can’t figure out how to put them on correctly!”

Janet Wang is a makeup artist

and photographer residing in

Orange County, California. To contact her, please email her at: ms.janetwang@gmail.com.

Every woman can put on false eyelashes and I’m going to enlighten you on the “fail-proof” method of putting on false eyelashes. The right way to put on lashes starts with removing the lashes from the box the correct way. You must be very gentle when peeling the lashes off the plastic mold. Do not rip or tear the eyelashes from the package. Once you’ve removed the eyelashes, take a pair of tweezers and grasp the outer end of the lashes. Holding the lashes with the tweezers, align each set of lashes to your appropriate eye and, if trimming is necessary, trim from the end. Try and avoid using the eyelash glue included in the packaging. That glue ends up gluing parts of your eyes together, which is not fun! Use DUO Waterproof Eyelash Adhesive if possible. Next, put the lashes on your eyes after all of your makeup and powder is done to avoid brush abrasion and shimmer on the lashes. Avoid placing the inner lash directly on the inside of your eye. This may feel awkward or even painful for those who have double eyelids. Make sure the entire lash is as close as possible to your real eyelashes. Once you have the lash on the eyelid, allow it to “set” for 60 seconds and adhere to the eye. Once eye adhesive is dry, if needed, gently curl the eyelashes (as well as your real eyelashes) in order to blend more naturally. Then, Yoila! You have beautiful, gorgeous false eyelashes. 67
