2024-2025 Test

raffle heifer Proceeds Donated To Up-Coming Projects At The Station

Miss
Pick Six Miss 410M
As first time consignors to the bull test we knew when they asked for a heifer for the raffle we had to take one from the very top of our keeper pen. 410 is the kind of female we want to build cow families around. Big topped, big hipped and sound as can be with added look. Her simm/angus dam is a perfect uddered 7 year old cow that has put one at the top of the pen consistently for years.
This one can go anyway you want. Make high percentage Maines, show steers or heifers or just elite commercial cattle. The possibilities are truly endless.
DONATION HEIFER PROCEDURE
The final bid in each round will denote the amount of that bidder’s donation.
Example: Round 1 - Final bid is $300.00 to Ryan Smith, Ryan’s donation is $300.00. Round 2 - Final bid is $250.00 to Tom Jones, Tom’s donation is $250.00. Round 3 - The female is re-auctioned on a downward scale until no further bids are received at the low of $10.00.
Each $10 purchased (donated) represents one chance in the final draw. (Ryan Smith has 30 chances, Tom Jones has 25 chances and so on down the scale to the final $10.00 donation worth one chance each.)
One ticket for every $10.00 bearing the contributor’s name will be put in the draw barrel. At the end of the sale, one ticket will be drawn with that person winning the heifer.

welcome from the station president
On behalf of the board of Directors I would like to welcome everyone to the 61’st Annual Douglas Bull and Female Development Center Sale.
I’m Jeremy Pilkey and this is my first term as President. Alongside my wife Kerry we operate a mixed cow herd consisting of about 60 purebred black angus and 45 commercial angus/ shorthorn cross cows alongside Riding Mountain National Park.
Continuing with what’s new you may have noticed our name has been changed to the Douglas Bull and Female Development Center. As a board we felt it was important we focus on raising quality, long lasting genetics more so than a test station. With the success of our hand fed heifer pen last year this feature has returned. They are doing extremely well. This year we have also added a pen of hand fed bulls. I encourage you to stop by and give your opinion. I feel they look great!
I would personally like to thank all our reliable, hardworking consigners who keep bringing us top genetics to showcase year after year. My goal is to work alongside our board of directors and consignors where we can create a strong development center for our cattle.

Not to be left out we are proud of our new young and upcoming cattle producers who are not taking a backseat to anyone when it comes to quality breeding stock!
I would like to thank Cam and his right hand woman Tracy for everything they do to keep the Center running smoothly! In closing, please feel free to reach out to myself or any other board member with any questions you may have. Cam is always happy to have a visit and give a tour of the cattle, so stop in anytime!

WELCOME from the station manager
Welcome to the Douglas Bull & Female Development Centers 61st Annual Sale!
This last year has been a whirlwind in the beef cattle industry! Record breaking prices have placed our producers in a position where they are getting paid for the hard work and sacrifice put into their operations. Our consignors have yet again brought us their best and we are excited about the group of bulls and heifers on offer this year. No matter the breed, the quality runs deep. After the success of our hand fed heifer program last year we brought in a hand fed bull program . These bulls have been developed in a more commercial type setting, challenging their genetics and feed efficiency. We encourage you to take a good look at these bulls and let us know what you think.
We welcomed many new consignors to our sale this year, with several being under 25 years old. The future of the industry sure looks bright when you walk our pens and see the quality that they have brought to our sale. Our consignors are truly a great bunch to work with. Ready and willing to help out when needed on weigh days, picturing or proof reading the catalogue.

Thank you!
We have something for everyone at this year’s sale! The chance to win a heifer, purchase semen lots and bid on yearling & 2 year old bulls along with yearling heifers representing six breeds. The Carberry 4-H Club will be with us to serve beef on a bun lunch and of course our ever favorite homemade pies! We look forward to seeing you sale day and as always, feel free to stop in and evaluate the bulls and heifers prior to sale day. We love talking cattle and visiting with our fellow cattleman!
See you Sale Day!

This calf is sired by Mariehamn Taipon 53H, a Coca Cola son. Coca Cola was one of the first bulls we used when we started into the Maine’s in 1975. This is my first calf out of this bull but he seems to be doing quite well. His dam Gilcroft Addie 20A is a 12 yr old cow out of Falloons High Voltage 41U a bull we purchased many yrs ago from the test center. She is one of our best fullblood cows still in our herd. She was also the dam of Gilcroft Darby, a bull we used for many years, also the top selling bred fullblood in our 2024 sale as well as the 2 yr old that is the same of the 502 calf. This calf had a lower bw and should make a good calving ease bull .

This calf is sired by Gilcroft Dancer 17D, a bull we raised and sold to Eastern Breeders. Dancer is a calving easy bull I use on all my first calvers. He throws smaller calves that gain really well as you can see by this calf. Dancer averaged over 5lbs a day on test and weighed 1600 at 13 months of age. His dam Gilcroft Kuny is a 2 yr old out of the dam of tag 501 , Gilcroft Addie 20A. She is sired by Badger Hill Mr 632F, a bull that has produced many good females for us. This calf is a low BW calf that is growing exceptionally well. He will produce calves that start small and have lots of thickness and growth potential.

This bull is wide topped, long bodied and has great natural muscling. He has performed very well during the test period boasting great performance and an impressive scrotal size. Fullblood Shorthorn with no percentage breeding in his pedigree. This eye catching roan bull will add pounds to your calves as his sire Muridale Gallager has for me. Fullblood Shorthorn with no percentage breeding in his pedigree. He is from a heifer with a birth weight of 78 lbs. This guy has sure put the pounds on. At 14 days of age he was 122 lbs. that is 3 lbs pounds a day gain just from milk. Thick and a solid red bull. He could be a good heifer bull. His Sire Prospect Hill Clay is solid red and his Sire was Balmoral Oaks Eagle. On the Dam side some good Muridale bloodlines with the likes of Muridale Raw Hide and Muridale Thailand along with Alta Cedar Lad 13N. FREE DELIVERY IF BOUGHT IN THE INTERLAKE.

There are no games being played when you look at Mindgame 21M. He is a bull that you have to appreciate for his hind quarter muscling and his overall mass and correctness down through his legs and feet. If numbers are more your thing—check out his Milk EPD—Top 1% of the breed! Fernando is a bull we just started using the past couple years and we are increasing the amount we will be using him this year due to the high quality of bulls and females he has been producing for us.

When we talk about the matriarch cows in our herd, one that is at the top of the list is the 5A cow. The proof is right here in Maximum 68M and all the others who have come before him. Maximus has been a favourite since he was born for everyone who has seen him. He is admired for his limousin thickness, muscling, overall size, and foot and muscle structure. A full sister was in the lineup for the show string last year and would have been a great asset but we had to make cuts due to too many heifers and not enough hands! Maternal brothers have been used in herd, as well as sold through this sale in 2022 to Casey McCuaig. Sired by the 2019 Agribiton Supreme Champion

Pine Creek Marshall
A double polled, double black bull sired by JYF Genesis and out of a deep bodied, easy fleshing, nice uddered cow who also came from Campbell’s Dispersal. Marshall combines calving ease with strong growth, muscle shape and length. He could be used on either heifers or cows.

A thick square made bull with lots of muscle expression in a well balanced package. I’m very impressed with SAV Magnum he’s a calving ease bull with tons of performance with a fresh pedigree. These will be some of the first sons to sell this spring out of him.

Here is a thick made well balanced calving ease bull that I’ve had my eye on all summer. His sire Connealy Craftsman is one of the #1 semen selling sires in the angus breed. His sons and daughters are in high demand and are topping sales south of the border. 6M and 7m will be some of the very first Craftsman to sell in Canada. Here’s a bull with solid and predictable pedigree that will go out raise highly marketable calves in anyone’s program.

Here is a bull you will admire for his extra length of spine and growth he displays in a thick well balanced package. His PVF Insight dam is a big, deep sided female with a nice level udder with nice teat placement and size. This is a bull to add pounds to your calf crop and leave you productive replacement females. Natural Renegade is an ET son of the great AI sire, Bar E-L Natural Law who sires cattle with extra length, excellent hoof quality, and tremendous hair quality. Georgina 202K is a stout made female with an excellent udder, she was campaigned successfully in the show ring as a yearling heifer. Her pedigree boasts breed great females such as Young Dale Grace 169B, Jaymarandy Grace 640D and EA Rose 918, all donor cows. Her maternal sister was $21,000 high selling female in the Jaymarandy Livestock Female Production Sale. All of this and his quiet temperament (he was halter broke as a calf) ensure Johnny will provide the high maternal qualities you are looking for without sacrificing performance.

Mountain Wave is a blood red blaze heifer bull prospect. A moderate framed, easy fleshing bull with excellent feet will add a marketable calving ease sire option to your heifer pen. His sire is the popular Circle G Heat Wave, the $42K high selling bull brings calving ease and performance. His State of War dam did
excellent job on her first calf, she is a big barrelled, tidy uddered female that has a bright future. Mountain Wave ranks at the top for calving ease, has genomic enhanced EPDs for your buying confidence.

JICC 16M is out of a cow we purchased from the Homestead T dispersal. He is a great candidate for the hf pen in our opinion with just a 79 lb birth weight, smooth made and out of a great cow. Being sired by Boundary Tycoon, he is packed full of calving ease on both sides of his pedigree. Photos of mother available on request or stop by the farm at Austin and have a look, the coffee is always on.

JIBAR Mr 391J
JICC 8M born unassisted at 98 lbs out a moderate framed, quiet Centurion daughter we own from Rendezvous Farms this guy should add length and power to your calves with great milk numbers on his EPDs. Just a February born bull with good growth. Photos of mother available on request or stop by the farm at Austin and have a look, the coffee is always on.

JI Bar Hector 6M
JICC 6M is a late January born bull that we have liked from day one. He is out of a red blaze faced cow, who has a great udder who we purchased out of the Homestead T dispersal. Weaning off his mom at 790 lbs with no creep in late September she does a fantastic job. Keep every heifer from this guy with a 35 milk number he is sure to produce great replacement. Photos of mother available on request or stop by the farm at Austin and have a look, the coffee is always on.

S
Diamond Bar S Max 16M is a young bull off our herd sire which has done really well on test. He had the misfortune of losing his mother halfway through the season, leaving him to fend for himself on grass and creep. Don’t overlook him as he has a strong pedigree behind him. He is lot number 142.

Diamond Bar S Major

Diamond Bar S Major 916M, number 143 in the pen is related to 16M, being his mother is a daughter to the 16B cow. This bull is going to be a great herd sire for someone who is looking for an all-around bull, he has Wheatland Red Teddy 457P, Metro, Red Quorum, Body Builder, and Knight Stinger. Do not overlook him as he is a good one!
144
Diamond Bar S Mark

Diamond Bar S Mark 2M, number 144 in the catalogue, is a powerhouse son of our herd sire Journey. He is a son of Rendezvous Galba 60A, out of a cow going back to El Tigre 52Z and the MRL 476U cow. He has been a young stand-out bull calf right from the beginning. Make sure to have a look, he won’t disappoint.
145 Diamond Bar S Maverick

Diamond Bar S Maverick 369M, lot number 145 in the catalogue is a smooth-made bull from front to back. He is a smaller bull in the pen due to early weaning after his mother went down with a spine injury. He is a March calf that is doing fairly well on test. Even though he is a smaller and younger bull, he is out of a tremendous cow that proved herself time and time again.

Sleepy Hollow Mr. Apollo 321M is a son of the great Gidsco Apollo 3F bull and out of one of our foundation cows More’s Ms. Autumn 321A. This cow has had several young bulls sold out of the test station and private treaty. We bred her to Apollo hoping for a polled heifer, but instead we got a horned bull. Don’t overlook Mr. Apollo! He will produce you good calves, whether they come pulled or horned.

Here is another impressive son out of the Lonestar Nova 306J cow and HFL Endgame 911G, a Horner Cattle Company bred bull. This guy has been a standout since he hit the ground, exhibiting exceptional muscle shape, overall mass and strength of top while maintaining an attractive front end. With a maternal brother selling in last year’s sale, Nova is quickly solidifying herself as not only a front pasture producer, but one that can crank out power bulls to back it up. With his 85lb birthweight, Maximus is jam-packed with calving ease, performance and maternal. You will find him easily in the bull pen, he is truly a striking individual. REG # PENDING TLH 55M

55M is a thick made, functional son our of our walking herdsire, NAC Ladies Man 137K and SYD Fendi 247H, a stout CCLT Alliance 91C we purchased out of the Keystone Konnection Sale. We are extremely impressed with 137K’s first calf crop. They are hairy, deep and thick. 55M possesses the same extreme hind quarter and overall power of his sire. While this guy was born unassisted, he does have a 110lb birthweight, so we recommend he be used on cows.

PEN Landon 13L is sired by the great Anchor T Metro bull. With EPDS CE 12.7 BW 2.4 and out of a JNR’S Titanium daughter PEN 19J. Lots of maternal with balanced EPDS with a 90 lb BWT. Could try him on a few heifers. Coming 2 yr old should cover a lot of cows.

YEARLING BULLS Hand Fed
As the demands of the cattle industry change we felt that an addition of a hand fed bull program would be beneficial to our offering. These bulls have been developed to promote adequate growth & muscle development all while challenging their genetics and feed efficiency. They have topped out at 16lbs/day on a 13% barley pellet complimented by grass/alfalfa hay and we feel they have excelled in this type of feeding scenario.

Menace 1M is a smooth made bull with a lot of length and a good top. He is backed by a great pedigree top and bottom. With a CE EPD of 9.3 and a 2.9 BW and a 90 lb BWT he would work very well on 2nd calvers. He is a Feb 17th calf and came off pasture with no creep.

905 Herbourne BKE Miami Anne 7M
This heifer was always one of my first picks as a calf. She does carry one copy of the myostatin gene. Her mother is a full sister to the dam of our 905 heifer. This is the Anne cow family that are prominent producers in at least 4 herds in Manitoba and beyond. The pride and joy of our 3 heifers on test as she is doing exactly what our herd is bred to do. Top indexing heifer at the 84 day weights, yet pleasing to look at. She is free by pedigree of the myostatin gene. All three of our heifer entries are from the first calf crop of Balmoral Oaks Kinetic Energy 6K purchased in the 2023 Test Station Sale.

A nicely built White heifer sired by the Royalty bull who has left us so many great daughters. She is out of a Crooked Post Stockman daughter from the Picture Perfect female line at Shadybrook. BW. 75 lbs.

POLLED
Another Royalty daughter from the Isla cow line which adds a little more performance. These Picasso daughters are proving to be very good females with performance, depth and good udders along with fleshing ability. BW. 93 lbs.

This heifer will catch anyone’s eye from across the pen with her flashy colors. This IPU Bentley daughter shows alot of traits that he is known for. She is one of those heifers that I really should be keeping for our own replacement but here she is.

OPEN HEIFERSHand Fed
After its introduction in 2024 the hand fed heifer program has returned. These heifers have been developed in a more commercial type setting. The heifers were topped out at 10lbs/day of 12% barley pellets complimented by a grass/alfalfa hay. Their genetics and feed efficiency have been challenged with great success.

Birdtail Shorthorn cattle are raised in a ranch setting with rugged pastures. Calves are raised on milk and grass, cows need good feet and udders. We enrolled both our bulls and heifers in the Hand Fed program as it resembles a natural continuation of how our calves are developed on the farm. Some home raised bulls have been active until they are 9 or 10 years. Birdtail Shorthorn cattle are raised in a ranch setting with rugged pastures. Decision Deferred Bulls:
A Decision Deferred Bull (DD Bull) is a bull who has not received a satisfactory semen test. About 45, 60, and 75% are expected to pass at 12, 13, 14 months of age respectively. A DD bull is usually a sign of immaturity and will most likely receive a Satisfactory passing with time. Any bull sold in the Manitoba Bull Test Station with a DD breeding soundness evaluation must still be above 50% normal and the veterinarian is confident that he will pass with time. If a bull is purchased in the sale, the purchaser will pay for the bull sale day and the funds will be held in trust. The bull will stay 4-6 weeks (dependant on veterinarian suggestion) at the Manitoba Bull Test Station and then will be retested at this time. If the bull receives a satisfactory grade, the purchaser can come pick the bull up and the cheque will be deposited. If the bull still does not receive a Satisfactory passing, it will be based on the suggestion of the veterinarian and consignor of how to proceed with the bull. Feed, yardage and semen retest will be the responsibility of the consignor until the bull reaches a satisfactory semen evaluation or other arrangements have been decided upon.
