We would like to
On behalf of the family, I would like to welcome you to our 14th Annual Bull Sale. If you are a past or present customer, or reading our catalogue for the first time, we would like to thank you for your interest and support of our program.
It’s been a wild ride the last couple years in the cattle business. We are at historic highs in Canada in the cattle market and it’s for sure long overdue. The good times are here right now and it is time for the cow calf producers to capitalize as much as we can. The Charolais premium is a real thing – we see it every fall with Charolais cross calves commanding top dollar in auction marts across the country. There is nothing more identifiable than a Charcross calf. Now is the time to try and get every pound out of your calf crop at a premium.
The bulls are on a whole herd health program and they are fed balanced TMR ration to develop them. We feed these bulls to develop them to their potential and to guarantee longevity. Our breeding philosophy has remained the same for the last 40 years. We strive to produce bulls that are long made easy fleshing individuals that are structurally sound with depth of body and natural thickness. We love cattle that are free moving and know how to travel, or as I like to say, are “thrifty”. We are continually trying to increase the performance of our cattle without sacrificing calving ease or vigour at birth.
The bulls are available anytime for viewing before the sale. If you are unable to make the sale we are more than happy to assist you with making your purchase. Please contact us, or our very qualified sales staff, to help you assess the bulls and to make an optimal selection to achieve the goals for your operation. Your bids will be handled in a confidential and professional matter. We still absolutely encourage you to come and appraise the bulls yourself and to have a visit with us. The sale is also being broadcast using DLMS for those of you that wish to bid online. The bulls will all be videoed and these videos will be available by the middle of March.
Lastly, there are a lot people that help us make this operation and sale run. We’d like to extend our gratitude to them.
The Hunters
It is always enjoyable walking through a quiet, high quality set of bulls and that is what you will find at Hunter Charolais. This is their 14th Annual Charolais Bull Sale which is an accumulation of over 40 years of breeding. They have selected the best genetics they could find across North American and have used embryo transplanting to propagate some of their great females. They have also been confident enough in some of the bulls they have produced that they retained semen and experienced great results in the progeny from these sires. The selection of fresh and proven genetics in the sale will work in any purebred or commercial herd with great success.
For decades, this family has been supplying bulls to the industry and with the long list of repeat customers, you know that the bulls work and they stand behind what they sell. Hunters are committed to agriculture and the cattle business and will work with you to make sure you’re happy with the genetics you are buying. They know what works in the commercial industry as they have a large commercial herd themselves.
Come for a great lunch, some down-home hospitality and look through the bulls beforethe sale, as it is a video sale and the bulls won’t be coming through the ring.
If you can’t make it sale day give any us, or the family a call, or watch it live and bid online at www. DLMS.ca.
If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you bulls that are right for your program.
Sincerely,
Helge & Candace By By Livestock

In the spring of 2023, we went looking for a bull to add hair, guts, nuts and found Default. We were fortunate to wind up being able to partner with the good people down at Turnbull Charolais on Default. Default has done what we expected of him, stamping his calves with an impressive coat of hair, impressive testicular development and has left a soggy set of sons we are excited to offer for sale this year.

Matador is an easy bull to find in the pen. He is heavy haired, stout, soggy made and easy doing. His mother, Georgia is in our flush program and is one of our premier cows at the farm, being a big broody cow with perfect feet. Matador is a maternal brother to HC Kenworth 242K, who is a reference sire on page 10.
Montgomery might be the best haired bull in the entire pen. Default sure stamped his calves, soggy, easy doing, big nuts and stout made. The Default Downtown cross did a nice job here. I think Montgomery will sire calves that the order buyers will fight over.
DAWN 134F
Lady Rain has been a mainstay here at the farm producing several high selling herd bulls over the years that have sold through the sale including HC Johnstown 113J, who was the high seller in our 2022 sale for $40 000. We are super excited to offer 3 Tank ET sons and her natural Default bull for sale this spring. Lot 9, HC Mojito 444M is as complete of a bull on offer here this year, sound made, soggy and heavy haired. Her Tank sons, lots 10, 11 and 12 are long, smooth made bulls that deserve a long look on sale day. They are free moving and sound structured.
The Tank bull doesn’t need any introduction in our program, being a mainstay for several years. He was brought into the herdbull battery as an outcross power and performance bull. We use him very successfully on heifers and he consistently shortens the gestation on cows by a week. The vigour of his calves at birth is second to none. His EPD spread is impressive to say the least, being in the top 10% of the breed for BW, top 25% of the breed for WW and 2% of the breed for YW. One thing with his numbers that is so impressive is that his numbers are good and his accuracies are extremely high. Not only does he have direct progeny in the sale, but he is the grandsire of several feature lots. I expect nothing but good things the longer his progeny are in production here. The old expression is “If it’s not broken don’t fix it”, is an accurate statement as to why we are still using Tank since we started in 2019.
Kenworth was the high selling bull in our 2023 sale and a crowd favourite. Kenworth puts a lot of things that we select for together in a complete package. Long, thick made, good footed and out of our flush cow the HC Georgia 7106E. He has sired a set of calves that came easy and pushed the scale down at weaning time. Watch for more of his sons to come in future years as we have bought Kenworth back being impressed with his first calf crop. These Kenworth sons can especially shine on a set of British based females adding length of spine, frame and depth of body.

Makers Mark was one of the heaviest bulls at weaning time coming off the cow at 778 lb. If you are looking for a bull to add length of body, frame size and weaning weight, 448M is for sure the bull for you!
The old 1298 cow has been a mainstay in our program for years, consistently either putting bulls to the front part of the bull sale or front end females in the replacement pen. She has had bulls from 5 different sires sell through our sale, she is a never miss female. Meatloaf is the heaviest weaning bull in the entire book. I feel like a broken record talking about bulls through sire groups but he is cut from the Kenworth mold, long made, deep and easy doing.
Johnstown topped our bull sale in 2022 selling to Wilgenbusch Charolais and Ferme Louber. We used him in our AI program and ET program and have been very pleased with the results. They came easy at birth with user friendly birthweights and haven’t stopped growing. He stamped his entire calf crop with above average length of body, lots of hair and an easy doing demeanour.

Big strong Johnstown son here out of the founder of the Zelma cow family at the farm, the Bridor Zelma 7Z female. The Zelma family has consistently consigned front end bulls into the sale and front end females. Recently, a Zelma was a high selling heifer calf at the National Charolais Sale in Brandon Ag-Ex 2023. Mexico is one of the easiest bulls to find in the pen being super good headed, long made and free moving. He is good haired and sound footed.

Michigan is destined to be an all-star in the heifer pen. His user friendly 82 lb BW and being in the top 2% of the breed on his BW EPD and in the top 1% of the breed on his CE number. He is an attractively built individual, clean fronted, smooth shouldered and small headed.
Mr. Wonderful is a bull we added into the battery to help out with walking needs around the farm. He is tremendously long, solid footed and easy keeping. All of his sons in the sale are born February 28th or later and they sure don’t look out of place with the earlier born calves. Lots 23-26
Mellow is a bull you have to appreciate for how soft made, big middled and easy doing he is. He has a
Carbon Copy is a bull we incorporated into our heifer pen and used on a select few cows through our AI program. He has sired a set of easy keeping, soft made sons that exhibit impressive depth of body and have an abundance of eye appeal. The daughters have awesome udders and will be highly productive females for years to come.
Mr. Smooth maybe the most appropriately named bull in the whole offering. We love how clean and smooth he is through his front end with a small head. He is one of the most attractively built bulls in the entire offering being square hipped, big centered and just so clean through his front end. His dam has a gorgeous udder and we look forward to what she can do here for years to come.
We brought Ransom in to breed heifers and a select few cows. He is consistently siring calves that are deep made with extra dimension and rib shape with impressive hip muscling. We have been using him for several years now and more than ever when I think of the Ransom progeny, they are maintenance free type cattle that are solid footed. His daughters milk well and have excellent udders. His progeny have always calved well and had above average performance in the fall.

Marlboro is one of the most complete packages we have on offer this year. He is good haired, well balanced individual that is great representation of what the Ransom progeny have to offer. The Ransom x Dual Threat cross has always been a homerun for us here at the farm. Marlboro is stout made from the front to the back and extremely free moving. Take the time to find this guy on sale day, the longer you look at him the more you will love him!
There is longevity built into this guy! His dam was 10 years old when she had Missouri. The Champagne 498 cow has one of the biggest most correct feet on the entire farm, is sound uddered at eleven this year and is a family favourite. I love selling bulls out of cornerstone females with the cow family support behind them. Missouri is one of the heaviest muscled bulls in the entire offering and effortlessly gets around the pen. He is stout and rugged made.
Malt Shop is the only Wheaton that we have on offer this year and what we lack for quantity of Wheaton sons, we certainly have the quality with Malt Shop! He is wide based, rugged made and has an awesome hair coat. We used Wheaton very successfully in the heifer pen, they came small and never looked back. We have several daughters that have been retained in the replacement pen. Watch for more Wheaton sons next year.

Mandan has one of the most interesting pedigrees in the entire offering. The WCF Mr Silver Gun is a bull that we acquired semen on from our good friends down at Doll Charolais, in North Dakota. Silver Gun is a tried and true performance bull that they have used over a decade. Silver Gun’s EPDs in the states shows it with him being in the top 1% of the breed for WW and YW with extremely high accuracies. He is also one of the top bulls in the states on his TSI number. Mandan is dense made, super stylish and has excellent testicular development.

In the fall of 2023, we purchased the entire bred heifer pen from Thistle Ridge Ranch, Ben & Carol Tams. Going out and seeing the entire cow herd and bred heifer pen we appreciated the vision and the goal that Ben had been creating. Fault free, easy doing cows that work for you and not the other way around. The entire set was bred to top end Ransom sons from the good people at Daines O’Neil and the Ransom thing was something that we were super familiar with and loved. We are looking forward to keeping these females in production and seeing their progress and watching cow families establish. When you see the THRR prefix in this book and books to come, buy with confidence.

I think the Kay-R Contender cows are definitely going to be some of the premier cows out of the THRR group.
