POINTS TO PONDER

I looked back at my editorial from the March 2020 issue of the Charolais Connection written in the middle of February and wow. Who knew what the next 12 months would bring turning the world upside down? As I have said before, we are so fortunate that we are in agriculture and that most of us have been able to continue life with some minimal interruptions. People still must eat, and we still have to be the primary producers to make that happen. One thing that has been amazing is the demand for beef through all of this. The packers have had the upper hand since the slow downs in production due to Covid in the packing plant lines, but through it all, the demand has been strong. The packer profits have been the highest in history for January, at the expense of the feeders.

I was looking at some data from the USA and the last week of January 2021 had the third highest choice boxed beef cutout price in history. The two other higher years were because of small fed cattle slaughters, but this is demand driven, as record beef production is put through the system. Boxed beef prices are at an unprecedented high for this time of year. Beef demand is so spectacular the large kills have been absorbed with ease. When the feeders can start getting the upper hand over the packers, I think the prices for fat cattle and feeder cattle will be extremely positive in the next few years. We have been through scores and scores of bull pens and taken 1,000s and 1,000s of pictures and videos for advertising and sale catalogues for these spring bull sales. There is a great offering of Charolais bulls for both your cows and heifers on offer this spring. There have been a number of sales that have already happened. You can go to our website to see the

averages and highlights and follow the sales as they happen. As we get into more bull sales, if Robbie Chomik, Jon Wright, or I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. J’ai repensé à mon éditorial du numéro de mars 2020 du Charolais Connection que j’ai écrit mi-février et wow. Qui aurait su ce que les 12 prochains mois bouleverseraient le monde? Comme je l’ai déjà dit, nous sommes si chanceux d’être dans l’agriculture et que la plupart d’entre nous ont pu continuer la vie avec quelques interruptions minimales. Les gens doivent encore manger, et nous devons encore être les principaux producteurs pour y arriver. Une chose qui a été incroyable, c’est la demande de bœuf à travers tout cela. Les emballeurs ont eu le dessus depuis le ralentissement de la production dans les lignes des usines de conditionnement depuis la Covid, mais à travers tout cela, la demande a été forte. Les bénéfices des emballeurs sont les plus élevés de l’histoire de janvier aux dépends des parcs d’engraissements. Je regardais certaines données des États-Unis et la dernière semaine de janvier 2021 avait le troisième prix de découpe de boeuf en boîte

le plus élevé de l’histoire. Les deux autres années plus élevées étaient attribuables aux petits abattages de bovins engraissés, mais cela dépend de la demande, car une production record de bœuf passe par le système. Les prix du boeuf en boîte sont à un prix sans précédent pour cette période de l’année. La demande de bœuf est si spectaculaire que les grands abattages ont été absorbés facilement. Lorsque les parcs d’engraissements pourront commencer à prendre le dessus sur les conditionneurs, je pense que les prix des bovins gras et des bovins d’engraissement seront extrêmement positifs au cours des prochaines années. Nous avons parcouru des dizaines et des dizaines d’enclos à taureaux et nous avons pris des milliers et des milliers de photos et de vidéos pour les catalogues de publicité et de vente pour les encans de taureaux du printemps. Female Genotyping in Seedstock and Commercial Herds Nicki Westersund Neogen, Western Canada Territory Manager, Beef Genomics

Having a strong bull battery is no doubt an effective way to manage genetics and breed in specific traits, but the bulls you use and test only factor into half of the equation. The females you breed and select are just as important and essential to identify strong genetics and tools for future selection. Ideally a well performing female will remain in the commercial herd or the registered herd book for years to come, so isn’t it valuable in knowing early on in that female’s life what genetics she is contributing to your herd? That is where genomic testing your females early on in their lives really holds value. Whether you are a seedstock producer promoting your genetics or a commercial producer trying to diversify or improve your herd there is a lot to gain from DNA testing your females. If you are a Charolais seedstock producer, you have a unique and valuable opportunity to DNA test females within the herd book through the Genomic Producer Advantage (GPA) program. So why should seedstock producers participate in this program? This program will assist in early predictions of genetic merit of females, as well as provide genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (gEPD’s) to help make breeding decisions. Producers who wish to manage genetic conditions or traits can use DNA testing to identify which animals are carriers or for herd management. Trait management, for example horned polled testing is another key tool in breeding management that is showcased through DNA testing of females. When you combine DNA testing with an animal’s pedigree you Charolais Connection • March 2021

generate the genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (gEPDs) for that animal. The difference of gEDPs over traditional expected progeny differences (EDPs) is accuracy. An animal’s gEPDs have a higher rate of accuracy over traditional EPDs as they are based not only on the animal’s pedigree and progeny records, but each animal’s genetic potential. This testing shows an animal’s heritable traits before the animal has even had a single offspring, potentially saving a breeder time and money by only making breeding decisions based on desired traits ensuring herd improvement. Participating in the GPA program utilizes the GGP-100K genomic test, this test generates the gEPDs for the animal as well as allows for cheaper and faster genetic condition tests. This is possible because the GGP100K includes the information for several genetic condition tests, such as Horned/Polled. If you are a commercial producer, you also have options to use genomic testing in your commercial herd, the Igenity® Beef Profile is a great genetic tool to use on crossbred cattle. With 16 traits and three indices plus parentage, this profile helps you make more confident decisions. Using the Igenity Beef Profile, means you can identity animals that have the most genetic potential for the heritable traits of interest in your herd for future generations. In terms of female testing this profile can evaluate each trait to help you sort and rank cattle, see patterns, herd strengths, areas of improvement or weakness and create custom indices on the Igenity Beef Dashboard to meet your goals or help select replacement heifers. La qualité de vos taureaux est sans aucun doute un moyen efficace de gérer la génétique et d’introduire certains caractères spécifiques, mais les taureaux que vous utilisez et tester ne facteur que la moitié de l’équation. Les femelles que vous élevez et sélectionnez sont tout aussi importantes et essentielles pour identifier une bonne génétique et elles représentent un gros morceau qui bâtira le futur de votre entreprise. Idéalement, une femelle performante restera dans un groupe commercial ou dans un troupeau pur-sang pour plusieurs années à venir, n’est-il donc pas utile de savoir dès le début de la vie de cette femelle quelle génétique elle contribura à votre cheptel? C’est là que les tests génomiques de vos femelles, dès le début de leur vie, ont vraiment de la valeur. Que vous soyez un éleveur faisant la promotion de sa génétique ou un producteur commercial qui essaie de diversifier ou d’améliorer son exploitation, il y a beaucoup à gagner en testant l’ADN de vos femelles. Si vous êtes éleveur pur-sang Charolais, vous avez une occasion unique et précieuse de tester l’ADN des femelles enregistrées dans le cadre du programme Avantage Génomique pour le Producteur (GPA). Alors, pourquoi les producteurs pursang devraient-ils participer à ce programme? Ce programme aidera à prédire tôt de mérite génétique des femelles, ainsi qu’à fournir des données pour les EPD génomiquement rehaussés (gEPD) qui guideront vos décisions en élevage. Les producteurs qui souhaitent gérer des conditions ou des caractères génétiques peuvent utiliser ces tests d’ADN pour identifier quels animaux sont porteurs. If you are looking to measure the level of heterosis in your crossbred herd, Neogen Canada offers the Envigor test which evaluates heterosis generating a score between 1-10. More details can be found on both profiles for commercial crossbred cattle at www.neogen.com. Whether you are a seedstock producer or commercial taking DNA samples from your animals can be efficient and easy. To take a DNA sample a sample collector must be used these include a tissue sampling unit (TSU) or either a hair or blood card. Be sure that the animal ID is

associated with the barcode provided by the sample collection to make for easy submissions and record keeping. Using TSU’s is a great way to test quickly and effectively on cattle of all ages as an Allflex product it uses a “modified tagger” to punch a little piece of ear tissue into a small, fluid filled vial to submit for testing. A very important aspect of DNA testing to understand and embrace is that gEPDs and EPDs are the most powerful tool to make genetic change in herds. They are an objective indicator of the heritable genetic merit of the animal which is how we can use them to make breeding and breed improvement decisions. They are also a marketing tool available to producers whether it is marketing carcass traits for selling your farm

to table product or promoting low birth weight bulls, DNA testing is an investment that can help improve your herd as well as your bottom line. Knowing the depth of your herds genetics and what you are building can help to mitigate any market uncertainties or changes. Always keep in mind that DNA testing is not the be-all-end-all and should be used in combination with other selection practices such as conformation, soundness and management practices. Using and marketing gEPDs will not only be the best investment to sustainably increase the longevity of the breed and industry but also to generate the most income back to your herd.

Congenital versus Hereditary Defects in Calves Roy Lewis DVM

Every year during calving season, veterinarians help deliver or discuss abnormal calves. Being twisted up, having abnormally large heads or extra limbs can all be problems calving. In these cases, we often have non-viable calves. Producers question us about these calves, and sometimes the purebred producers may be questioned as well because the sire was one of their bulls. This article will shed some light on how to classify these cases and explain their probable causes. Suffice it to say that these are almost never hereditary defects and are just flukes that really have nothing to do with

the breeding itself. If a very abnormal calf is born this spring take a few pictures of the abnormality for your records. We want to determine what system is involved, be it the skeletal, ( also spine versus the rest) ocular, oral (such as a cleft palate), integumentary system (such as no hair). Sometimes it’s an umbilical hernia, or the internal organs are twisted, deformed, missing etc. There are the fetal monsters such as the cyclopean, two headed calves, Siamese twins or the very consistent defect of the schistosomas reflexus calf (born essentially inside out). Some of these calves are so abnormal a fetotomy needs to performed with them cut up inside the cow, or the worst case scenario, a caesarean section to deliver them. All this for a non-viable calf. Other

times calves are born quite viable but with slight abnormalities, such as a small deformed extra limb, mild cleft palate or an inguinal hernia to name but a few. Some of these minor abnormalities can be surgically repaired and go on to be a somewhat normal calf. Others are born with severely contracted tendons and are treated based on severity. They may be left, or have the toe rasped, pain killers given and the leg forcefully extended to splints applied. In severe cases, flexor tendons may be cut to allow a somewhat normal extension of the limb. Congenital defect just means ‘born with it”, and the severe ones are usually chromosomal aberrations that often come with multiple problems. This means a total individual calf ..continued on page 61

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association News Bob Lowe, President

This past year COVID-19 presented the Canadian beef industry with significant challenges to cattle producers such as temporary processing plant shutdowns and extreme market volatility, but that was not all. As the pandemic went on and the year unfolded, many producers also faced weather related challenges ranging from significant flooding in some regions to drought like conditions in others. More than ever, this made it abundantly clear in our industry that access to well designed and sufficiently funded business risk management (BRM) tools has never been more critical for cattle producers and the Canadian food system. Since 2018, federal and provincial governments have been conducting a comprehensive review of BRM programs. Throughout this time, CCA has continued to advocate for enhancements to the AgriStability program, including the removal of the reference margin limit (RML), increasing the $3 million payment cap, increasing the trigger to 85 per cent of the reference margin and increasing the program’s compensation rate. The good news is some of these enhancements have already been enacted in individual provinces for the current program year including British Columbia and Prince Edward Island, however at the time of writing, other provinces have not yet moved on program changes. CCA has placed a high emphasis on improving risk management programs for cattle producers. That’s why in order to bring more tangible evidence to federal and provincial governments that demonstrate why these program changes are needed, CCA partnered with the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association, Beef Farmers of Ontario and Maritime

Beef Council to develop a number of AgriStability models on western and eastern Canadian operations to show the impact of reference margin limiting, trigger and compensation percentages and payment caps. These models clearly demonstrated that the RML unfairly limits many cow-calf producer’s reference margins under the program. These farms require a much deeper, if not devastating, drop in production before the program provides support. As a result, equity, predictability and fairness would be improved for the cow-calf sector if the RML is removed. This is particularly important for young producers who are the future of Canadian agriculture and they need our support. For larger feedlots, AgriStability payments cap out at $3 million very quickly, leaving a feedlot of this size exposed to potential losses in the tens of millions of dollars when facing depressed markets as experienced during COVID-19. The current $3 million cap on AgriStability payments has not changed in approximately 15 years. Yet, inflation has cumulatively increased by over 45 per cent and input costs have increased by over 70 per cent in the same timeframe. An increase to the compensation rate would also make the program more responsive to significant drops in farm margin and better support the viability of both cow calf operations and feedlots. In short, our industry is long overdue for measurable improvements. Last June, CCA had the opportunity to testify before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food where we presented key recommendations on BRM programs that will improve equity and effectiveness for beef cattle producers. You may recall in November the Agriculture Committee released their BRM report and was

pleased to see a number of CCA’s recommendations on AgriStability, price insurance, Advance Payments Program and Livestock Tax Deferral adopted by the Committee. At the conclusion of the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Agriculture annual meeting at the end of November, Federal Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announced that the Government of Canada was prepared to make enhancements to the AgriStability program. In particular, the proposal tabled by Minister Bibeau to provinces and territories included the removal of the Reference Margin Limit (RML) and an increase to the compensation rate from 70 per cent to 80 per cent. Both are intended to apply retroactively to the 2020 program year. The Minister also mentioned that the federal government is prepared to consider other program enhancement options. This was welcome news, however Minister Bibeau also acknowledged there was not national consensus among Ministers to agree upon and implement the AgriStability proposal as the provinces needed additional time to reflect and respond. While the proposal did not include everything CCA lobbied for, CCA supports the proposed enhancements and believes they will significantly improve the program for cattle producers. We will continue to support our cattle producers and engage with federal and provincial governments alongside our provincial members to seek national agreement on the AgriStability proposal. As we settle into the first quarter of 2021 and what this year may bring, I am encouraged that the provinces will announce their support of the proposed changes. I ask you to stay the course and keep the conversation going on the need for better AgriStability program within your own communities ..continued on and page 58

Importance of Forage Analysis; Making Sure Nutrient Requirements are Met Heather Smith Thomas

Winter forages may need supplementation with protein or minerals. Jeremy Martin, PhD (ruminant nutritionist and reproduction manager, Great Plains Livestock Consulting) says it’s important to sample and test forages, especially after unusual weather patterns that may affect growing conditions. “We always recommend testing, even on lower-quality cheaper ingredients of cattle diets. Cost of tests, relative to potential savings, is so small there’s no way to justify not doing it.” It can be costly if you oversupplement or under-supplement, so you need to know the nutrient values of your feeds. “Ideally, you’d test forages or silages. Any small grains hay should be tested, because nitrates are potentially an issue with them,” says Martin. Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Beef Feedlot Management Associate, says weather conditions in some regions made it more difficult to put up hay or harvest crops. “One of the things we’re concerned about is people relying on book values in terms of nutrient content. You need to know what the nutrient values of your specific feeds actually are,” he says. Janna Block, North Dakota State University Livestock Systems Specialist, says hay samples after harvest, or before purchase, gives you a chance to evaluate hay and determine which group of cattle to feed which hay. “For protein, cattle need a bare minimum of 7% in the diet. Below that level, microbial efficiency in the rumen declines,” she says. There won’t be enough protein to “feed” the microbes that ferment

and digest forage. Digestion slows and a cow can’t get adequate nutrients from what she’s eating, and also can’t eat enough to sustain herself, so she loses weight. Forage that’s only 7% protein (and 50% TDN (total digestible nutrients)) might work for the mid-gestation dry cow, but is inadequate for cows in late gestation. “They need forages that are at least 55 to 58% TDN and 8 to 9% protein, to support fetal growth. This will also depend on condition of the cow. If you are trying to feed a thin cow to pick up in body condition she’ll need more nutrient-dense feed,” says Block. “Cows in late gestation/ early lactation have the highest requirements—about 60% TDN and about 11% protein. This is a rule-of-thumb way to evaluate your forages and match them with various production groups. First-calf heifers have high requirements for growth as well as supporting a fetus,” she says. It’s hard to create a ration for beef cattle without a forage analysis since nutrient values can vary so much, even within the same type of plants. Brome grass hay could be 6% protein or as high as 12% depending on stage of maturity and weather conditions while growing and during harvest. “When feeding grass hay we need to know the protein level,” says Rusche. “If it’s 9 to 9.5% protein, we won’t need additional supplement, but if it’s only 7% that’s a different story. The rule of thumb I was taught is that cattle need something that’s at least 8%. If it’s below 8% and we supplement with protein we see improved digestibility and increased feed intake.” Make sure cattle are eating enough, especially in cold weather. “If they don’t eat enough, and the forage is not very digestible, we’ve created an energy deficit in those pregnant cows,

and set ourselves up for poorer calf health, poor colostrum quality, and poor rebreeding—so we didn’t save money by not purchasing protein,” says Rusche. After calving, the cow needs even more protein for lactation. An investment in protein supplement when it’s needed will always pay off, but you don’t know if you need it unless you test your feeds. Block recommends sampling each batch of hay, based on number of bales in each lot, and a lot consists of all the hay (same species) harvested off the same field under the same conditions (within a 48-hour period). “Some people might just sample what they think is their worst hay, to know what the bottom level is, but we can’t put together a nutrition program without a total feed analyses, to be able to target when you’d want to feed certain forages or might need a supplement,” she says. “Any feed test we do is only as good as the sample we send off, so we want to make sure the sample actually represents the feeds we will be using,” Rusche explains. A sample should be taken from each field, and each cutting of hay, because these cuttings may be different in their stage of maturity. “If it’s grass hay, we may have started harvest at boot stage and ended up with some fields that were already headed out by the time we finish harvest, and those will be very different in quality. There may also be species differences, or soil differences in certain fields. One field may have had more manure on it, or caught more rain,” says Rusche. “Then we must make sure we’re sampling that particular lot of hay uniformly and not just pulling cores off the bales we can get to the easiest. We need to take about 20 cores throughout that batch of hay to get a

good representative sample,” he says. “The labs we send the hay samples to do a good job of testing and reporting. The things we generally look at closest are moisture content, percent dry matter, crude protein, TDN, fiber levels, and associated energy. These values will tell us whether the feed will be adequate to meet cows’ needs, or if certain feeds could be blended together to meet those needs, or whether we need to bring in some outside supplement,” he explains. Often ranchers just do what they’ve always done. “They might give their cows 35 pounds of dry matter and 2 pounds of protein supplement, but they don’t actually know if they need that supplement,” says Block. “With

any unusual harvest conditions, it’s even more important to do feed testing.” A field that normally produces high-quality forage may be different if harvest was delayed by weather (and forage became overly mature) or got rained on multiple times before baling. “We have published new informational material about rain impacts on forage quality. Some people had trouble putting up hay, and their growing season was different. We saw crested wheatgrass that was still green in August, and it is usually mature and dried out by mid-July. Our growing condition were better in some situations but harvest was not always ideal,” she explains. “There was some rained-on forage,

with loss of quality, digestibility and nutrients. It leached out some of the carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals,” says Block. Some producers baled hay too wet because they didn’t have much choice, and that hay may contain mold and mycotoxins. If a person is trying to figure out a least-cost feeding strategy and develop an adequate nutrition program, feed testing is the place to start. “Some people call us and say ‘it’s the same field we did last year; can we just use last year’s analysis report?’ I ask them if this year was exactly the same as last year. You don’t really know how different, and we can’t put together a ration with numbers we’re just guessing at,” says Block.

TEST METHODS – Most commercial laboratories offer standard feed tests for forages, grains or total mixed rations. Dr. Rick Rasby (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) says the most important aspects of a feed when designing a diet for beef cattle include assessing moisture content, protein and energy. Nutrient analyses in a lab are commonly done using chemical reactions or by extracting important compounds and determining their amounts in the feed. Some labs also use near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy. This is a rapid, reliable, low-cost, computerized method to analyze feeds. “This test uses near-infrared light rather than chemicals to identify important compounds and measure their amounts in a sample. Feeds can be analyzed in less than 15 minutes using NIR, compared to hours or days for chemical methods,” explains Rasby. When sending a sample to be tested using NIR, it is important to identify the type of feed/forage being submitted so the lab can make sure that the right feed library is used. “This method will not accurately evaluate a full mineral profile but does seem to fairly accurately determine calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P),” he explains. NIR does not do an adequate job of measuring energy or TDN (total digestible nutrients) content of distillers’ grains, for instance. “In an NIR analysis, TDN is estimated using acid detergent fiber (ADF), which measures cell wall content of a feed. Distillers’ grains are high in fat, and NIR will underestimate energy content. However, NIR will adequately measure moisture, percent crude protein (CP), calcium and phosphorus in distillers’ grains,” says Rasby. Many labs use NIR tests because they’re cheaper. These are appropriate when testing common feedstuffs like alfalfa, bromegrass, meadow hay or native range hay. With some of the annual forages, however, the NIR tests may not be as accurate. The equation that was developed to predict values was not calibrated for those forages. Spending the extra money to get analyses with wet chemistry for those types of forages would probably be worth it. If you are going to take the time to sample and test your feeds, you want them to be accurate. If you are not sure about how to take or send in samples, or what tests to request, there are nutritionists and other feed experts who can answer your questions.

Herd health, continued from page 50 problem not related to the genetics of the bull or cow in any way. A genetic fluke that doesn’t reflect poorly on either sire or dam. Most times, unless an orphan calf is available, these cows are culled for not raising a calf that year. It is not uncommon for large herds to have one such case every few years. Along with chromosomal abnormalities, trauma during pregnancy, and other issues with the uterine environment can also cause birth defects. There are some abnormalities for which causes have been found, such as atresia ani, or a missing rectum. These calves are seen almost immediately as they appear constipated when they are attempting to push out the meconium. A close look reveals they don’t have a rectum. Rectal palpation at 35 days’ gestation has been attributed to a slight increase in these in the dairy world. We have done heroic colostomies on some of these and got them to slaughter weight, indicating there is absolutely nothing else wrong with the calf. Sometimes large parts of the intestinal tract are missing and these calves are put down, but again there is no hereditary cause. It is good to document any of these abnormalities in the herd. In the rare event it might be hereditary, you would see multiple calves with the same disorder. Then there might need to be DNA testing done to see if there is a common link. Over the years, each of the purebred breeds have had one or two of these issues come up, have found the common links and eliminated them from the gene pools. Keep in mind, most of these are recessive genes so must be carried by both the sire and dam before we see anything in the calves, and then only in one quarter of the calves. They often start with a mutated gene. I looked it up and there have been, over

all the years, up to 200 genetic defects linked to cattle. Some very minor and some major resulting in a non-viable calves. Again it must be noted they are repeatable and all the purebred breeds of cattle have certain ones linked to them. Conditions such as: betamannisidosis, The TL 1/29 gene, dwarfism, or arthrogoposis, but they get eliminated by selection culling of identified carriers and again, the purebred breeds in general do a really good job at this. They are very rare though and the vast majority of oddball calves you sometimes see on your place are simply congenital defects - novelties. Document these calves and if you do see two or more talk with your veterinarian. An autopsy could be done, the systems affected identified, and then often things like feed (and mycotoxins therein), nutrition and mineral status are probably going to be looked at before hereditary involvement is suspected. With mycotoxins and nutrition especially, a large percentage of calves may be affected, but proper diagnosis can allow you to prevent the condition next year. So this calving season document any abnormal calves with pictures, and if there is more than one, get them checked out by your veterinarian to determine if it is just congenital and not worth pursuing, or may have a cause that is preventable in the future. Keep in mind, the cause may have happened way back in gestation, so it may almost be impossible to alter fetuses affected in utero. Have a great 2019 calving season with lively, vigorous calves that get up quickly and suckle that colostrum they desperately need. This topic may not be glamorous, but it’s worth discussing this time of year.
