his is the 5th Annual Prairie Distinction Bull Sale and we welcome you tohave a look. The six consignors to this year’s sale have all been striving to produce a product that will work for you no matter where you are in the industry. We have sold seedstock and commercial bulls across the country to many repeat customers and this year have an offering that warrants the same. Whether you are looking for a white, tan or red bull there is quality in all flavours. From bulls that would work in the heifer pen, to power bulls that will give you as much performance as you would like, they are here. These breeders are here for the long haul and will work to provide you with bulls that will last. The two-year old bulls in the sale are designed to be that and are not left overs. The yearlings are from the top of the programs with the best they have to offer coming to town. This past fall we saw the premium paid for the Charcross calves as consistently high as it has ever been in the auction markets. Crossbreeding is essential to maximize profits in the cattle business and these bulls will give you the added performance, meat and hair that will put your calves in the top cut pen come sale time. Feel free to give the consignors a call and stop and have a visit with them before sale day, if you want a little extra time to meet the breeders and see their operations. Also, this year the sale will again be broadcast live on the internet at www.dlms.ca. If you can’t make the sale, you can bid online. Please register early if you are going to take advantage of this service. Please come early sale day and enjoy viewing of the bulls, a complimentary lunch and hospitality before and after. If Jon, Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program and make your bull buying experience a pleasant one. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By, Jon Wright • By Livestock

Each year we seem to bring more bulls to the sale and this year we have a real variety of bulls on offer that will fit everyone’s needs. We have whites, tans, heifer bulls, fall bulls and an awesome red two-year old. These bulls have been developed on a Masterfeeds grower pellet and grass hay so they will gain well but last. A few of the pictures do not do these bulls justice as picturing this January with the cold weather and calving at the same time has been a challenge. birth weiGht & CalvinG eaSe University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weight more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.
Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

This is what we at LEJ want to raise. Big, hairy, easy doing bulls that can go out and walk the pasture and breed and come home looking for more. Out of a Geddes daughter bought from Steppler’s female sale, he’s sired by Braxton. Love the cow and love this bull. She calved this guy out unassisted and bred back to give us a heifer calf Jan. 16th. He’s a good one.

This is a chunk of a bull in a dark red suit. He has a strong top line and deep flank with tons of hair. The Navajo calves all have great feet and are made to last. If you want some color in your calves or are breeding some dark cows, this guy will work really well.
A typical Navajo son, nice headed, smooth built and ready to work. Another dark haired bull to put color in your calf crop. Unfortunately, we lost Navajo to injury this year, so there won’t be a lot of offspring on offer going forward. This is a solid built bull that can cover cows well. Navajo was an easy calving bull when used on cows.
