STATE OF THE SCHOOL I want to extend my most sincere thanks to this magnificent community for supporting PDS in the myriad of ways that you do as parents, alumni, grandparents, friends of the school, faculty, and staff. Presbyterian Day School is an institution of great purpose, strong faith, and dynamic vision, all flowing from our mission to glorify God by developing boys in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man. We serve Pre-Kindergarten through 6th-grade boys by helping them grow in their knowledge, their academic and social skills, their emotional intelligence, courage, resilience, and their understanding of God’s love and grace and purpose for their lives. I could call us an elementary school for boys, but, really, that falls short, as PDS has become a world-class exemplar of 21st century learning, global awareness and connectivity, technology integration in the classroom and the curriculum, student-centered learning support, rigorous professional learning for our teachers, and an active provider of development and learning for teachers of public and private schools from across the country. Even though we teach 643 active and curious boys each day, each boy is known, loved, prayed for, and celebrated for his unique interests, talents, and temperament. We teach and assess learning in ways that seek to maximize skill development and understanding for every boy. We teach in active, hands-on ways that excite and engage boys. We believe that students have varied and unique intelligences

and learning styles, and therefore our teaching must be intentionally flexible, versatile, and carefully designed. We set high expectations for learning and student behavior, and we also celebrate boyhood and boys. Each day, we, teachers and students, immerse ourselves in teaching and learning together. We start by teaching traditional, foundational basic skills, but then we go much further. The skills of yesterday are necessary but no longer sufficient for the world of today and tomorrow. Our society has evolved from the predictability and mechanization of the Industrial Age to a more fluid, technologically saturated, media rich, fast-paced Digital Age, where collaboration, teaming, the ability to manage ambiguity, diverse reasoning skills, persistence, the creative application of knowledge, and the ability to learn continuously are demanded and rewarded. We are members of a dynamic, interconnected, “Our academic philosophy centers on the and diverse global development of our boys’ abilities to think community. To critically, creatively, and connectedly.” continue our tradition — Lee Burns of preparing boys to be scholars, citizens, and leaders of the world they will inherit, PDS has not been afraid to grow and change, to dream and dare, to innovate, invent, and evolve. Our strength today and our vision for tomorrow are connected to our rich heritage and great traditions. We value and pursue excellence yet appreciate that excellence, best, and necessary are ideals that are iterative, evolving, and emerging all the time. As a learning organization in the 21st century, we at PDS are astute and deliberate students of our world, engaging in rigorous and continual professional development,

research, and curricular design. We seek to embody the 21st century skills, attitudes, and mindsets that we seek to cultivate in our students, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, initiative, personal responsibility, integrity, courage, subject area knowledge, curiosity, flexibility, adaptability, positive risk taking, and the ability to learn from failure. We, as professional educators and as an institution, intentionally and strategically embrace change, innovate, actively research, and learn by execution as we seek to design an ever-better curriculum and dynamic learning experiences.

“A boy’s early years set the trajectory for a man’s life, developing his mind, his character, his faith, and his heart.” — Lee Burns

PDS teaches and mentors boys during the most formative years in their lives. Our mission encompasses the deep insight and conviction that a person’s faith, character, values, intellectual curiosity, love of learning, study habits, work habits, and worldview are all largely formed before age 13. A boy’s early years set the trajectory for a man’s life, developing his mind, his character, his faith, and his heart. The early years before adolescence powerfully impact the sort of husband, father, leader, and man a boy will become. We are vested in helping boys become men of great character, great abilities, and great faith. Our biblically-based Building Boys, Making Men program teaches boys what it means to be a Godly man. Our academic philosophy centers on the development of our boys’ abilities to apply foundational skills to think critically,

creatively, and connectedly. For further schooling and success in work and life, our boys must be able to research, analyze, synthesize, and write. We encourage our boys to ask and wrestle with tough questions without the simple yes-or-no answers. We structure our curriculum and teaching methodology in a manner that places a greater value on developing deep understandings of important concepts rather than just memorizing information and accumulating facts. We encourage our boys to explore and envision, to embrace risks, conquer fears, and be reflective in their learning. I am happy to have the opportunity through this annual report to share some of the specifics of PDS. I am happy to convey our perspective and our accomplishments. I am happy to share our vision of what we believe that learning must become for students to be prepared for their futures. In the following pages, you will get the details of the many programs and outcomes we have designed and offer. What you will notice is that there is an ancient structure at work — the structure Socrates and Plato understood. Learning needs four essential elements: a great teacher, a stimulating learning space, a motivated student, and a question. PDS has those same elements, and through these pages you will hear about our outstanding teachers, dedicated to designing engaging and rigorous learning for our boys. You will also see that PDS is an employer of choice among professionals seeking a position in teaching. You

will see a panoply of learning environments and programs as well as a vision for new facilities that will provide needed tools and contexts for learning. Our students continue to perform at the highest levels of achievement among their peers in like schools across the nation, and they tackle many questions in all types of subject areas under the expert guidance of loving teachers, staff, and coaches. Even amidst difficult economic circumstances, more and more students and their families are seeking to be part of our learning community here at PDS. In fact, we are experiencing our largest enrollment in school history, with waiting lists and extremely high re-enrollment rates. As has been true for a number of years as headmaster of this great school, I am guided and our faculty and staff are driven by the goal of determining and creating a world-class school preparing our boys to be leaders in the 21st century world. We are focused, eager, and relentless. Enjoy reading about what we have accomplished, what we value, and where we are going.

PDS is one of the finest elementary schools for boys in the world. In attending the annual conference of the National Association of Independent Schools this year, I was awed by the leading edge professionalism and vision that our school has developed compared to its peers across the nation. We have developed a shared understanding of what it means to prepare boys for a changing, technologically-driven, and interconnected world. We are serving others in our community through our expertise in education. PDS’ excellence in implementing its mission is exemplified in a number of ways: • PDS is committed to excellence that is rooted in the truth of the Gospel and our firm commitment to Christ. A great example of this is the Building Boys, Making Men program, which is now a book with accompanying DVD available as a teaching tool for other schools, churches, and parents. This is impactful outreach. • PDS continues to take boys whose overall IQs are about average for an independent school and produce test results that are above average in almost every category. • PDS is an exceptional model for the integration and use of technology in teaching and learning. Over 100 schools have come to Memphis to see our program. • PDS offers a rigorous curriculum and we continue to deepen our understanding that each student learns differently. While holding high academic achievement standards, we must also continue to offer learning support to ensure the success of each boy.

• PDS continues to invest in its faculty and staff. Over 85% of PDS teachers have trained at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. • PDS is a good steward of parents’ tuition dollars. Not one dime of tuition paid for $18,000,000 of recently expanded and renovated facilities.

PDS continues to invest in its faculty and staff. Over 85% of PDS teachers have trained at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

• PDS generously shares its wealth of knowledge and resources. Three examples are working with Berclair Elementary School, the PDS Young Scholars Program, and The Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence. There are so many great things to celebrate at PDS, and I am honored to be a part of this innovative and dynamic school. Don Batchelor is the PDS Chairman of the Board and a member of the class of 1966.

THE BUILDING BOYS, MAKING MEN PROGRAM

A SURE FOUNDATION

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, what is a role model worth? Or an honest, straight forward conversation? PDS believes that boys should be intentionally taught about what it means to become a man because it provides a sure foundation for living, loving, and giving of one’s self to the world. The definition of manhood we teach PDS boys is that a real man glorifies God by seeking an adventuresome life of purpose and passion as he protects and serves others. Through chapel programs, class meetings, devotions, classes, and relationships with the PDS faculty and staff, the Building Boys, Making Men program provides PDS boys a strong foundation to rely upon all their lives. One of the most important features of the Building Boys, Making Men program is surrounding boys with good role models, men whom they could one day see themselves emulating because of their honesty, their relaxed and authentic self assurance, their humor, and their values. “Much of what we learn in life,” explains Mark Fruitt, Principal of the Elementary Division, “happens outside the classroom in what I call teachable moments. Boys, particularly, are watching what the adults in their lives do, not just what they say. That’s why is it so important for us to model honesty and ethics in even the small decisions and happenings of our lives.

12

Observant, smart boys are always on guard for discrepancies between what we say is right (our talk) and how we actually behave (our walk). At PDS, we aim to offer our boys the best male role models possible in our faculty, staff and coaches. We hope to give our boys heroic standards to live up to.” As they are preparing to leave PDS, 6th-grade boys engage in a year-long discussion about the pressures boys face from peers, myths about manhood, and culture. Flight Plan: Your Mission To Become A Man, by Headmaster Lee Burns and Chaplain Braxton Brady, offers boys a forum to analyze and reflect upon the tough choices they will face. “What we want,” explains Headmaster Lee Burns, “is for boys to choose carefully and wisely, using good information. We can’t really leave that to chance.” The Building Boys, Making Men program exists because of the generosity and vision of a few good men who believe strongly that preparation is incomplete unless PDS intentionally devotes time, energy, and expertise to developing men of sound character who understand what it means to be a Godly man possessed of wisdom, humility, and a strong service ethic. We envision more opportunities like service learning projects to build boys into men of great character and are seeking investors and partners in this vital aspect of the school’s mission. Braxton Brady is the PDS Chaplain and Director of the Building Boys, Making Men Program.

Chairs of the 2010-2011 Annual Fund, Stephanie and Anthony Tancredi, issued this year a Parent Participation Challenge to increase parent participation from last year’s high of 61%. “We became involved,” explains Stephanie Tancredi, “because we wanted to support a school that we believe does an excellent job. Our son is learning at a good level; he is happy and looks forward to going to school each day.” For every percentage point that participation rose over 61%, the Tancredis matched each point with $500. With the challenge as inspiration and motivation, the total parent participation for the 2010-2011

Annual Fund was catapulted to 82%, an exciting increase of 21 percentage points. The Tancredi’s challenge match was $10,500. “Becoming involved in the Annual Fund leadership was a learning experience,” adds Anthony Tancredi. “The Annual Fund supports much more than it appears at a quick glance, and we were glad to have an opportunity to learn the depth to which the Annual Fund helps support PDS boys and teachers.” The 2010-2011 school year marked the beginning of the PDS Cornerstone Society of the Annual Fund. The Cornerstone Society recognizes all Annual Fund gifts of $1,000 or more. Membership in the Cornerstone Society is a testament to a shared belief in the importance of the PDS mission “to glorify God by developing boys in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man.” In appreciation for leadership in giving and support of the school, the Cornerstone Society members are invited to special events, participate in roundtable discussions with guest speakers, receive special recognition in PDS’ Annual Giving Report, and are provided with special updates on PDS from the headmaster. The Cornerstone Society in 2010-2011 raised $363,688 for the Annual Fund which represents 65% of the unrestricted funds raised. That one gives is more important than what one gives. Gifts of every size support the school and make a difference in the learning experiences of our boys and their teachers.

Taking advantage of the exciting competitive spirit created by the NCAA March Madness Men’s Basketball Tournament, PDS decided to create a little March madness of its own that is quite exciting and competitive in a MARCH friendly and purposeful way. Last year, PDS created the innovative March Mania Online Auction, and we are happy to say the second year of online buying proved just as exciting for bidders as for the school. This year’s March Mania Online Auction raised approximately $65,000, a 44% increase over last year’s auction proceeds.

before the event so that there is great variety and special appeal to the auction items. Striving to offer the most interesting and unique packages to entice and delight PDS bidders, committee members research and combine items to create special occasions and experiences worthy of competitive March Mania bidding. PDS is also grateful for the15 generous auction sponsors whose contributions of over $8,500 contributed greatly to the total auction proceeds. We would also like to extend thanks to the auction crew that monitored the computers and oversaw the proceedings during bidding week, monitoring and closing auctions as often as every 15 minutes on the final days of the auction.

MARCH MANIA • 2011 auction proceeds totalled more than $65,000, a $20,000 increase from the 2010 auction. • More than 300 registered bidders in 2011, more than a 50% increase from the 2010 auction.

13&

Over 300 registered bidders vied over 175 unique items during bidding week in March. The single highest bid item was the Blackberry Farm Stay, which sold for $5,750. Of note, $8,565 was raised from 51 Special Touches donated by the PDS faculty. Special Touches items included packages like a popsicle playdate, a monthly dessert service, a do-you-dare? dodgeball tournament, and the opportunity to be a PDS coach for the day. Many of these special experiences and outings designed by PDS faculty and staff offer a creative opportunity for students to be with their teachers and coaches in a fun and casual way. Planning and overseeing the online auction is a community endeavor. Committee members solicit donated items for months

16

In looking to future years of March Mania, PDS hopes to increase the number of auction sponsors who want to impact the success of the auction with their contributions; we want to continue to develop exciting and unusually compelling gift packages full of intriguing items and experiences; and we, of course, want to continue to advance the online auction as a fun community event by increasing the number of participating bidders each year. We believe the online auction is conducive to these growth prospects as the online format and atmosphere will allow us to preserve a friendly and intimate auction experience. Auction proceeds provide unrestricted funds to the PDS Annual Fund.

CRUSADER FUN RUN AND PEDOMETER CHALLENGE

STEPPING IT UP ITEMS PURCHASED FROM THE CRUSADER FUN RUN AND PEDOMETER CHALLENGE • Stationary Bikes with Screen and Virtual Routes • Hydraulic Belays for Climbing Wall • Trikes for the Trike Track • Free Weights and Stretch Bands for Flexibility and Strength Conditioning • Recess Equipment

The challenge was to walk around the world in 12 days. Who was up to this challenge? PDS faculty, staff, and boys were, thanks to the inaugural Crusader Fun Run and Pedometer Challenge. Designed by the PDS Athletic Department, the purpose of this new and fun event is to educate PDS boys about the importance of fitness and health while raising funds to support the Lifetime Fitness Center and Physical Education Program. At the beginning of April, the PDS Athletic Department distributed over 800 pedometers to students, faculty, and staff. “Everyone was asked,” explains PDS Physical Education Director Spencer McLean, “to wear their pedometer from the time they got up in the morning until going to bed at night.” Participants kept daily logs of their steps. Each morning at school, classes compiled all of their individual step totals into a class aggregate. “As a class lesson,” Spencer says, “students and teachers converted their total class steps into miles walked, and tracked their progress in walking around the world on a digital map the school used to see the impact of all our steps combined each day. Two weeks of daily trekking resulted in PDS collectively walking the 50,000,000 steps it took to circumnavigate the globe.” The culminating event was a school-wide Fun Run where boys ran laps around the outdoor fields, meeting their personal goals, lap by lap. Each participant asked for pledges for meeting their walking and running goals. “Our combined 50,000,000 steps resulted in over $37,000 to enhance the equipment we have to help boys develop the habit of lifetime fitness.” “Brain research tells us,” explains Dennis Smith, Director of Operations and Athletics, “that increased exercise and movement

have positive effects on cognition, memory, and attention as well as endurance, persistence, and frustration tolerance. All of these are important to learning.” The goal of the Crusader Fun Run and Pedometer Challenge is to create greater awareness of the connection of health and fitness to learning in addition to raising dedicated funds to enhance our program. “Research also shows,” continues Dennis, “that people who wear a pedometer walk an average of 2,000 more steps per day, resulting in about an extra mile each day. Through our community pedometer experience, we are creating positive awareness that is the first step in learning and developing new health and fitness habits.” The PDS Athletic Department was delighted to have the extra funds to invest in the Physical Education and Lifetime Fitness Program. Indoor and outdoor equipment for all grade levels that includes a variety of balls, including stability balls, and trikes for the trike track were purchased. Also, eight trickster stationary bikes and a large companion screen with virtual riding routes in places like New York City and Liverpool as well as hydraulic belays were added to the Lifetime Fitness area, adding to the climbing wall and challenge courses. “Our goal,” says Dennis Smith, “is to offer instruction and guidance in a great variety of exercise and challenge experiences in addition to the traditional team sports we teach so that boys at PDS develop a lifelong habit of health and fitness at a young age. And, we all are willing to run the distance to make that happen.” Dennis Smith is the Director of Operations and Athletics.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR PDS

BUILDING TOMORROW FOR TODAY

The Building Boys, Making Men campaign successfully transitioned from Phase 1 with $16 million raised to launching Phase 2 which seeks to raise $10 million. We greatly appreciate the commitments members of the PDS community have made to invest in our future. To date, $16,847,419.80 is pledged by 380 individual donors, representing 65% of the total campaign goal of $26 million.

“This capital campaign will allow PDS to put the physical plant in a state that will position PDS to be the finest and most advanced elementary school for boys in the world.” — Kem Wilson, PDS Trustee and Campaign Chairman

Phase 2 of the campaign will fund enhanced programs and facilities that are essential for a world-class school preparing scholars and leaders for a dynamic, interconnected world. New learning spaces will greatly enhance our boys’ learning experiences by creating the most advanced and properly outfitted learning environments for creative and imaginative problem-solving, technology-supported connection and collaboration around the world, direct learning experiences in music, art, and science, and new potential for health and nutrition studies. Personalized learning support for small groups and individual boys will take place in the Mallory Reading and Learning Center which has been funded by a gift from Suzanne and Neely Mallory, Jr.

20

We are happy to report that Phase 2 of the campaign is experiencing success and is actively soliciting new partners. New learning spaces are essential to providing the type and quality of teaching and learning that a school of our calibre must have to prepare boys for high school, college, and life. Opportunities for giving exist in a new music center, an art wing, a media center, new science labs, a new cafeteria, kitchen, and nutrition curriculum. Kem Wilson, PDS Trustee and Campaign Chairman, sums up the importance of the campaign’s focus, “Upon surveying the quality of the leadership, staff, faculty, and curriculum, the only thing that was lacking to put PDS in a world-class category was the facilities. This capital campaign will allow PDS to put the physical plant in a state that will position PDS to be the finest and most advanced elementary school for boys in the world.” By carefully considering an investment in this campaign, we hope that you will join us in our efforts to transform excellence into world class.

THE MARTIN INSTITUTE

A PUBLIC PURPOSE THE MARTIN INSTITUTE 2010 - 2011

• Five Teaching Residents • More than 800 teachers attended Martin Institute events • 156 learning sessions offered this year • Six public school teachers sent to Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education • Inaugural Summer Conference Keynote speakers: Bill Nye the Science Guy (above) and Governor Bill Haslam (opposite)

The Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence is an innovative venture uniting Presbyterian Day School, the University of Memphis, and philanthropists around the most critical issue facing schools today: developing outstanding teachers through world-class professional development. “Investing in teachers is something that brings together city and county, public and private, traditional public schools and charter schools,” explains Headmaster Lee Burns. “At The Martin Institute, we come together not to talk about politics, but to talk about how we can improve our craft as teachers so that we can improve the learning experience for our students.” Funded by Brad and Dina Martin and their family to impact student learning through investing in teachers’ learning, the Martin Institute is housed on the campus of PDS. Through workshops, seminars, a residency program, and conferences,The Martin Institute creates opportunities for teachers to observe, share, network, and further develop their craft, drawing upon the research and ideas of leading educational thinkers and child development experts. Summer 2011 brought the first annual conference presented by The Martin Institute. “We had more than 500 attendees from 11 states and England,” shares Laura Dearman, Martin Institute Conference Director. “In our first annual conference, we had 120 high-quality presenters, some of whom were Google certified teachers, group leaders from Harvard’s Project Zero, Apple Distinguished Educators, and university professors. We also enjoyed remarks from Shirley Raines, The University of Memphis President, Bill Haslam, the Governor of Tennessee,

and business leaders from the Memphis area. The Martin Institute granted scholarships to around half of the conference attendees at a free or subsidized rate, removing barriers to connecting and learning. We also really appreciate the generous support of Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, who was the presenting sponsor of the summer conference; we are excited that they share our urgent interest in connecting educators to each other and to great ideas that will impact students.”

“I believe very strongly that probably the most important thing we can do to deliver high-quality education experiences to young people is to invest in those who teach them.” — Brad Martin, PDS Trustee PDS is a school founded in 1949 as an outreach ministry to the Memphis community. “From its beginnings,” says Headmaster Lee Burns, “PDS has embraced an outwardmindset, responsible to a public purpose. The Martin Institute will positively impact teaching and learning in Memphis and beyond, and PDS is proud to bring together enthusiastic educators to share and lead the way in innovating education.” Dr. Clif Mims of the University of Memphis serves as The Martin Institute’s Executive Director.

THE CRAIN CENTER FOR GLOBAL CURRICULUM

A GLOBAL FOCUS

There are currently 196 countries recognized by the United Nations, yet we share one world. The ability to collaborate and think with people from different cultures is a critical competency for today’s student, teacher, and leader. Globally competent individuals investigate the world beyond their immediate environment, communicate ideas with diverse audiences, cultivate perspective (both others’ and their own), and take action ethically, critically, and creatively. Through the deliberate focus and leadership of The Crain Center for Global Curriculum, PDS is better able to develop in our students the capacity and the disposition to understand and act on issues of global significance. It is our intention to integrate global awareness in all subjects and across all grade levels.

Opportunities to interface with and learn from peers around the world make the PDS teacher and curriculum stronger and more apt in cultivating global perspective and awareness in PDS students.

The Crain Center offers travel grants for PDS teachers to travel abroad so they may enrich their teaching practice by becoming students of the world, connecting to teachers from a variety of countries, and experiencing another culture firsthand. teacher, traveled to London to take part in an international action research team with the International Boys School Coalition. Her team researched and presented their findings on how boys’ engagement and achievement in the study of foreign languages can be developed and enhanced. “Participating in an international research team,” explains Jessica, “brought me so many connections with teachers from schools around the world, giving me an opportunity to interact and learn with some phenomenal teachers. I was on a global team with teachers of French, German, Japanese, and Spanish who teach boys from ages 7 to 18. It was invaluable to work with a diverse team of teachers who were so giving and so willing to offer data about what works best for boys in world language classrooms.” Peggy Riggins, 4th-grade math teacher, traveled to Beijing and Shanghai to observe three schools. “I visited a Chinese school run by the Chinese government,” Peggy says. “This school was competitive to get into and very rigid. Their studies were Chinese and English focused. I also visited two international schools. Their students were from all over the world. Both schools had a strong Mandarin focus, and one was innovative in its use of 21st century teaching.” Opportunities to interface with and learn from peers around the world make the PDS teacher and curriculum stronger and more apt in cultivating global perspective and awareness in PDS students. “I am grateful,” Peggy added “to the Crain family and PDS for enabling me to go on this trip.” Jessica Chandler is the Director of The Crain Center for Global Curriculum and a JK-2 Spanish teacher.

THE CRAIN CENTER 2010-2011 • PDS boys in PK, JK, and SK study Mandarin and Spanish • PDS boys in 1-6, study Mandarin or Spanish • PDS boys participate in World Math Day • PDS 6th graders can participate in Model United Nations • Digital citizenship and environmental sustainability are important world issues that PDS boys study • Brenda and Lester Crain funded the Center • Eight PDS teachers have received international travel grants from the Crain Center (pictured, opposite)

THE YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM

A GIFT OF A LIFETIME THE YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM PDS is actively seeking philanthropic partners to increase the availability of the PDS learning experience to five new Young Scholars in each incoming Junior Kindergarten class and afford them the opportunity to remain as PDS students through 6th grade. • Currently, PDS has 19 Young Scholars. • PDS scholars rank in the top part of their classes. • Private philanthropic support funds the Young Scholars Program.

Sean Gatlin, Jr. is an outstanding reader. He loves to read, and he loves to learn. “I can’t explain how amazing my son is to me,” explains his dad, Sean Gatlin, Sr. “I know one of the main reasons for his success is because of PDS.” Sean and his wife, Patricia, have five children. Their son, Sean, is a PDS Young Scholar who attends PDS. Sean is thriving, making lifelong friends, and forging a sure foundation for future success in schooling and in life. He is breaking a cycle of limited opportunity in his family for his generation. His mom and dad are thrilled that Sean can be challenged and supported at PDS to dream and know success early, an extraordinary opportunity that the Gatlins could not have imagined a few years ago. The Young Scholars Program is a scholarship program that gives boys a life-changing opportunity. Boys with the academic potential to be successful at PDS enter the Young Scholars Program in Junior Kindergarten and remain in the program through 6th grade. PDS currently has nineteen Young Scholars in Junior Kindergarten through 4th grade. These boys rank academically in the top part of their classes.

Making opportunities available to include boys of diverse racial and economic backgrounds is important to the learning environment at PDS — for students, teachers, and parents. Knowing other perspectives and viewpoints enriches our sense of community and connectedness as parents and teachers who want the best for our boys. We know the PDS learning experience builds boys and makes men of exceptional character, empathy, intellectual rigor, and leadership abilities. We believe it is a necessity and an exciting opportunity to transform lives, like Sean’s, through partnering with families and donors to give a PDS education, a transformative gift of a lifetime. Becoming a partner in the Young Scholars Program is a tangible and manageable opportunity to give back to greater Memphis by impacting the lives and futures of talented students who would otherwise not have an opportunity to attend a private school. We believe that the Young Scholars of today will become the future leaders of Memphis and the Mid-South tomorrow. Linda Douglas is the PDS Admission Liaison and Young Scholar Advisor.

ADMISSION AMBASSADORS

PARENT PERSPECTIVE

PDS is a school for boys, especially designed to teach in the way boys learn. But, as a prospective parent, how does one know if PDS is the right school for my boy and my family? Parents want, as a part of their process of choosing a school, to interact and hear from other parents who have been through the process of choosing and are now PDS parents. To help prospective parents get the best and most information they can from the perspective and experience of a current PDS parent, PDS developed the Admission Ambassador Program.

“Prospective parents are able to see immediately that because PDS parents, teachers, and administrators work closely together for the benefit of the students, PDS boys thrive.” — Anita Kerkhof, Admission Ambassador “The Admission Ambassadors Program is critical to the success of our school,” explains Courtney Smith, volunteer coordinator of the Admission Ambassadors. “Admission Ambassadors are able to provide an inside view as a parent to other parents. Our Ambassadors really go the extra mile to answer questions for families during their admission process at PDS.” Admission Ambassadors assist with admission tours, providing an open forum with students, parents, and teachers.

28

Anita Kerkhof, a volunteer who spearheads the Admission Ambassadors during open houses, describes the unique nature of PDS tours: “Our tours are conducted by a faculty member who gives the school perspective, a 6th grader who gives the student perspective, and an Admission Ambassador who offers the parent perspective.” By organizing time with prospective parents in this way, PDS encourages all questions to be answered by the “subject matter expert.” Anita describes herself as expert in the the non-Memphian perspective, as she and her family relocated to Memphis from Chicago. “In addition to that, I have twin boys so I can attest to the fact that PDS treats each child individually, working to understand his interests, strengths, and learning profile.” Both Courtney and Anita are thrilled to share their PDS experiences, remembering when they were once prospective parents determined to find the best match in a school for their boys. Having a formalized program that helps prospective parents ask questions about the many other parts of the school community in addition to the teaching and learning makes the PDS admissions process more personal, more effective, and frankly, more fun. “There are many Admission Ambassadors and all are thrilled to talk about the school. Prospective parents are able to see immediately,” says Anita, “that because PDS parents, teachers, and administrators work closely together for the benefit of the students, PDS boys thrive.” Jan Conder is the Director of Admission and Enrollment

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

PARENT PARTNERS PDS PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION EVENTS • Book Fair • Crusaders Care • Gift Wrap Sale • Spirit Wear Sales • Library Volunteers • AR Auction • Sixth Grade Graduation Banquet • Father/Son Event • Faculty Appreciation • Hospitality • Berclair Elementary School Partnership • Early Childhood Connections

The Parents’ Association is a volunteer support group for the PDS school community. All parents of PDS students are members of the Parents’ Association; there is no charge or membership fee to belong. Drawing on the talents, passions, and commitment of our parents, the Parents’ Association strives to strengthen PDS by engaging in specified service activities that support various school programs and needs as well as helping all parents feel a part of the PDS community. Serving as the 2010-2011 PA president, Stephanie Linkous shares her experience, “Leading the Parents’ Association was a great experience that allowed me to reach out to the PDS parent community and invite everyone to get involved in one way or another. My involvement also allowed me to learn more about how the faculty and administration work with the parents to support the boys and their activities.” The encouragement that the Parents’ Association provides to families, faculty, and staff, and PDS’ adopted school, Berclair Elementary, throughout the year is greatly appreciated and makes all the hard work well worth the investment of time, talent, and energy. “According to many PDS teachers who have worked in other schools around the country,” explains Stephanie, “what the Parents’ Association does at PDS is unique. One of the most valuable things I learned was how much the PDS community is willing to serve. Being servant leaders is a way of life at PDS, and parents that serve others teach their sons a very valuable lesson.”

“We are blessed with an incredible parent body,” says Headmaster Lee Burns, “and I am deeply grateful for the many wonderful ways they serve at PDS, especially through the Parents’ Association.”

“Leading the Parents’ Association was a great experience that allowed me to reach out to the PDS parent community and invite everyone to get involved in one way or another.” — Stephanie Linkous, 2010-2011 Parents’ Association President Getting involved is easier than one might think. Whether you have the time to lead a committee, or work in the library for an hour a week, or send in cookies for the teacher appreciation luncheons, everything is helpful. “Just taking the time and effort,” reflects Stephanie Linkous, “shows our sons that we believe in giving back to a place that gives so much to our boys. The school would not run as smoothly without the support of the Parents’ Association.” The Parents’ Association mission is to support and to advance the mission of the school. “So,” Stephanie adds, “the more advocates PDS has, the better.” Stephanie Linkous was the 2010-2011 PDS Parents’ Association President

PDS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

TIES THAT BIND

Over three hundred PDS alumni and friends of the school gathered for the Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon to share in honoring Wade Hampton Sides ’74, as the 2010-2011 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Hampton Sides is the author of three national bestsellers, Ghost Soldiers, Blood and Thunder, and most recently, Hellhound On His Trail. “The Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon is a special event for PDS,” explains Alumni Board President Oscar Atkinson. “Men get to come back to their school and see lifelong friends, and they also get to hear about the amazing things that continue to happen for boys at PDS today. Much has changed, but the joyous laughter of boys ringing through the halls reminds us of the lifelong friendships forged in this special place.” PDS 6th graders did some digging on Hampton Sides and discovered that he served as class president from third grade on, edited the school newspaper The Press Bee, had artwork displayed in the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and won an essay contest when he was in third grade that landed him as mayor for a day. After the PDS boys shared a montage of the critics’ accolades of Sides’ writing and historical insights, Hampton took the podium as chief storyteller of the day, sharing some entertaining memories of his PDS years, revealing happy times, lifelong friendships, and his emerging passion for writing. After offering an adult’s hindsight perspective on the fashion of

32

the era, like really high tube socks, really short basketball trunks, and plaid on plaid, Sides settled into remembering some people who contributed to his success like teachers Charlotte Neal and Neva McKinzey who encouraged his writing and “hardwired his brain with English grammar.” Included in Hampton’s factors for success were his childhood friends, many of whom were at the luncheon, who have been meaningful and sustaining throughout the years. He mentioned the late Shelby Foote, father of classmate Huger “Huggie” Foote, as becoming a significant literary influence on his writing style, but who, at the time, was also just a dad. Hampton explained that he and his pals at times irritated writer Shelby Foote with typical boyhood roughhousing and hanging out that was loud to the point that Foote reminded the boys “to keep it down because I am in the middle of the Battle of Appomattox here!” “Because PDS serves boys in the most formative years of their lives,” explains Headmaster Burns speaking of the annual event, “we feel especially connected to the men they become. PDS is proud to have a diverse group of men, like Hampton, who have created interesting lives, served their communities, and excelled in unique ways.” Oscar Atkinson agrees, “The Distinguished Alumnus Award provides a way to celebrate great achievements and encourage PDS boys to make an impact in their own way.”

ALUMNI BOARD

The Alumni Board is devoted to connecting PDS alumni to each other and to the ongoing life of the school. The board focuses its activities on creating engagement and connections among alumni. The current Alumni Board has representation from four decades of PDS alumni from 1960 to 2001. The biggest alumni event is the Annual Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon.
