Getting Brighter
I
started writing this note on the day that Pfizer asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve its vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11 years old. My two kids fall into this category. To say I am relieved is the understatement of the year. Maybe that steady, underlying pulse of fear for their welfare that’s been with me since the start of the pandemic will finally fade away once my 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son are fully immunized against COVID. It’s been with me so long (and ebbed slightly when my parents, in-laws and husband and I got our shots), that I can’t even remember what it’s like to live without it. I’m not shy about saying I have a very low risk tolerance for all things COVID. I ultimately made peace with my kids going back to the classroom full time as Delta raged because my husband was also going back to the classroom — and I couldn’t deny my kids’ mental health had been impacted by distance learning.

But the official word that the vaccine is slated to be approved means my family’s world will start to open back up. We’ll be heading back to indoor spaces — like the wonderful institutions mentioned in our Kids ♥ Museums guide on page 17. And I’ll feel comfortable with them traveling by airplane again. That might mean we’ll fly over winter break this year. For families who want to stick closer to home, we’ve got some great family road-trip destinations right here in Oregon (and Washington). The best part is we’ve done the legwork for you! Travel writer extraordinaire Judiaann Woo details excellent accommodations, dining recommendations and totally fun activities in her story on page 10.

And of course, I’ll feel better about my kids being in crowds, too. This winter brings the return of several holiday events shut down last year due to COVID. Veterans Day parades, turkey trots, festive light displays and holiday bazaars are back. Find the fun for November on page 28.

Playlist: An Old-timey Good Time Gordie “Crazylegs” MacKeeman’s new album Folk for Little Folk
Volume 1 is infectiously joyful — even if you don’t necessarily consider yourself a country- or folk-music fan. (Red Yarn devotees, these songs are totally your jam.) MacKeeman’s frantic fiddling drives the tracks. And that fiddle makes it hard to listen and stand still, especially on tracks All Around the Kitchen, Get Out There and Dance, Boogie-Woogie Baby and Hop High Ladies. At the very least, your foot will start tapping, but there’s a high likelihood that a full-blown dance party will erupt. Also on the album: The most up-tempo Hokey Pokey you’ve ever heard. (And there are plenty of funny gems tucked into the lyrics — on Big Rock Candy Mountain “the wifi is good and strong” is listed as one of the never-ending benefits of that magical place.) But it’s the truly outstanding musicianship that makes Folk for Little Folk an album that grown-ups will enjoy as much as their kids. — D.C.

It’s no secret that the mountain is where to head for epic snow sports. Mount Hood, Oregon’s tallest, most majestic peak, is home to six ski areas and the nation’s longest ski season. But there are plenty of ways to enjoy this winter wonderland and snow globe views at any speed.

Oregon Coast Locals know that the shoulder season is a great time to visit the Oregon coast. It’s not unheard of to have the entire beach to yourself. Fewer crowds means an easier time finding parking, a faster time getting into your favorite restaurants and overall more social distancing in general.
Stay
Book a hotel room with an ocean view for winterstorm watching when waves crest higher than any other time of the year. Hotels like the pet-friendly Surfsand in Cannon Beach even offer complimentary popcorn for the viewing. If the added space of a private cottage is what you need, Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa offers family-size cabins overlooking Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City.
Play
So long as kids are dressed appropriately, the beach is still a great place to dig and build sand castles year round. Bring a kite from home or shop for one at one of many local kite shops and take advantage of the gusty breezes that can make for some epic kite flying. If the forecast calls for rain, the arcades, Seaside Aquarium or the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria all offer interactive fun for kids of all ages.
Eat
There are many great food options along Oregon’s coast, but Astoria boasts more than its fair share of kid-friendly, foodie-approved dining destinations. Buoy Beer makes spotting sea lions super easy with a section of see-through plexiglass flooring right inside its
JUDIA ANN WOO
restaurant. Enjoy breakfast, pastries or fresh baked bread at the Blue Scorcher Bakery & Cafe. Stock up on healthy snacks and let the kids try out the automatic hand-washing machine — think car wash for hands — at the local Astoria Co+op.
What to Pack Aside from waterproof boots to keep
beach toes dry and cozy, a set of binoculars will let you and the kids really see all the action while keeping everyone at a safe — and dry — distance. Use them to spot nesting seabirds, lighthouses, migrating whales and other marine mammals.
Pro Tips From mid-December to mid-January, more than 25,000 gray whales will migrate along Oregon’s coastline as part of their twice-annual migration to Baja, Mexico. Oregon State Parks celebrates this special winter move with Whale Watch Week in late December with trained volunteers positioned at 24 designated sites, including the Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay, to help visitors spot and learn more about Oregon’s largest marine mammal. And remember, never turn your back to the ocean! Sneaker waves — sudden, unpredictable water surges — are known to occur in winter months, usually from October through March.

The Gorge It’s just an hour from Portland, but you’ll be breathing easy when you hit the scenic beauty of the Columbia River Gorge with its abundance of rivers, waterfalls and picturepostcard landscapes.
Stay
While your first inclination might be to look for accommodation in Oregon, the Washington side of the Columbia River boasts lots of unique options with easy access to the Gorge. Enjoy a bird’s eye view from one of the new luxury tree houses at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson located just across the Bridge of the Gods or check out the fun restoration and remodel that turned a former school into a unique, modern, hybrid hotel/hostel with on-site family-sized cabins at the Society Hotel in Bingen.
Play
Hood River is beloved for being a basecamp for outdoor adventures, but its charming shops and businesses make it equally great for families that prefer the indoors. Spend a day exploring 3.5 acres of climate-controlled hangar space that make up the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum which includes an interactive, handson kids’ exploration area. If you find yourself needing some last-minute gifts or distractions, check out local favorites along Oak Street including G. Williker’s Toy Shoppe and Waucoma
Bookstore for their solid toy and reading recommendations.
Eat
You’ll find lots of family-friendly restaurants in Hood River including pFriem Family Brewers, Ferment Brewing Company and Solstice Wood Fire Cafe & Bar. And if you’ve ever fretted the long lines at Eastwind Drive-In during the summer, now’s your chance to get in on the action without the wait. Most people know this Cascade Locks landmark for its burgers and massive soft-serve cones, but they also offer a wide variety of breakfast items to-go and the kids’ menu includes items like corn dogs and a pizza pocket-like “pizza stick.”
What to Pack With the Hood River Fruit Loop nearby and an abundance of specialty apple varieties to choose from, pack a pie tin and do a little baking with the kiddos — if your accommodations include a kitchen. Either way, expect to bring some Hood River Valley apples home for baking throughout the winter season.
Pro Tip: In November and December, book a ride to Christmas Town on the Mt. Hood Christmas Train which departs from Hood River. The 90-minute, round-trip journey includes cookies and milk with characters from The Train to Christmas Town storybook, a bonus gift and a sighting of Santa himself.
Skamania Lodge’s tree houses are nestled between Douglas firs and come stocked with family board

Pro Tip Did you ever imagine
The Wallowas Even during the summer months, getting to the Wallowas in eastern Oregon takes some commitment. Surrounded by the Eagle Cap Wilderness and glacial lakes, what the Wallowas lacks in cell service, it more than makes up for in natural beauty.
Stay
If peace and quiet is what you’re after, the snug cabins at Wallowa Lake Lodge offer uninterrupted lake views and regular wildlife sightings on the 10 acres that house the nearly 100-year old main lodge that looks like something right out of a Wes Anderson movie.

What to Pack
The drive from Portland to Joseph is just under six hours but if you add time for pit stops, the trip might be closer to seven or eight. Pack a paper map when heading out to eastern Oregon as cell service and GPS directions can be spotty at times.

Eat
For a small town in eastern Oregon, Joseph offers lots of dining options from homey to gourmet. For casual fare and a crowdpleasing menu, Embers Brew House Restaurant and Pub has lots to choose from including kid-friendly apps like warm bread sticks, fried mozzarella sticks and totchos. Naturally leavened, wood-fired pizza with hyper-seasonal, locally sourced toppings is not something you might expect to find in Joseph but that’s exactly what you’ll get at The Gold Room. Treat yourself and your crew to a fine piece of handmade chocolate at Arrowhead Chocolates where you’ll also find a solid cup of Stumptown coffee.

easy, fun — and can produce some really stunning results. The concept is the same idea as a woodcut print, but without the block of wood or the sharp and dangerous tools necessary to carve it. Almost all of the materials for this project can be found in your kitchen and pantry. But the block-printing ink is really key to the project and can be found at art-supply or craft stores. The drawing tool should be a blunt instrument that your little one can press into the waxy surface of the carton to make indentations. Those indentations will become white lines in your print as the ink, which is rolled onto the surface, won’t seep down into those crevices. Also, don’t worry about existing lines or deformities in the carton’s surface. Embrace the randomness of those marks and see what surprises await when you pull your first print!

Water-based block-printing ink, such as Blick or Speedball Rolling pin or a brayer Wax paper or parchment paper Clear tape Plexiglass, cardboard or an old, clean cutting board Paper or something to print on like a grocery bag, etc. Wooden spoon
Instructions
1. Clean your empty carton with soap and water. Pat it dry with a paper towel and set it aside to dry completely. 2. Use an old plastic table cloth or newspapers to protect your work surface. Cut the carton into a square or an interesting shape. (An adult should be the one to use the craft blade.)
TUMBLEWHEEL STUDIOS
3. Using the blunt tool, have your child draw on the lined side of the carton. Make sure they are pressing down hard enough to leave an indentation. The deeper the crevice, the clearer the line will be. 4. If you are using a rolling pin that you don’t want covered in ink, use wax or parchment paper to cover it and tape to secure. If covering, be sure to tape directly to the rolling pin, and then along the entire seam. Squeeze out your block-printing ink onto the plexiglass, cardboard or cutting board. Use your rolling pin to spread it out evenly. While you are doing this, the ink should also be transferring onto your rolling pin and coating it. 5. Roll out the ink onto your etched carton in the fewest passes possible so that your carton has a nice even layer of ink sitting on the surface. 6. Carefully place your paper over the inked carton. Make sure your paper completely covers the carton and try to align it so that there is an equal amount of space all around the outside. Where you place the paper will determine how the print transfers. 7. Burnish (rub) the paper with the back of a wooden spoon using small, circular motions. Be sure to get all the corners! 8. Pull back the paper to reveal your little artist’s latest masterpiece! Jenna Reineking and Nick Patton are a wife-and-husband team who started the nonprofit Tumblewheel Studios. They converted an old Bluebird school bus into a mobile art classroom and studio space to bring free art education, tools and materials to underfunded schools and underserved communities. Jenna also works as the operations manager for Portland Syrups. And Nick also manages the sculpture facilities at Pacific Northwest College of Art and teaches in the Foundations Department there. STORY AND PHOTO BY DENISE CASTAÑON
Flavor-packed noodle soups, chicken karaage and other Japanese delights await your family at Hillsboro’s Ninja Ramen.
For more family-friendly restaurant reviews visit: pdxparent.com/ family-supper
While my two kids are generally good eaters, they can be picky when it comes to trying new things. But our COVID-inspired family tradition of a car picnic and a restaurant named after stealthy martial arts legends, got them on board with trying Japanesestyle fried chicken and more. Recently, we ventured from Southeast Portland to Hillsboro to check out the savory soup and karaage, aka Japanese fried chicken, at Ninja Ramen, a small eatery tucked into an unassuming strip mall. We didn’t want to eat indoors since the kids aren’t vaccinated yet, so we opted to eat parked in the car while the food was hot. And we weren’t deterred by the location because some of our most memorable and enjoyable food experiences have taken place at strip malls. And that was the case with Ninja Ramen.
