ortland may be experiencing growing pains as housing prices skyrocket and many people find themselves without a safe place to live, but don’t buy the sensationalized stories that Portland is only changing for the bad. As parents, we know that when our kids grow, these changes bring new struggles, but ultimately new successes. So, in the long run, more people will bring more talent, creativity and diversity to our city. Think of it as more friends for our kids to play with. And despite these growing pains, Portland remains a phenomenal spot for a family vacay or a place to raise kids. Portland is easily accessible, boasts charming neighborhoods across all quadrants and is home to numerous beautiful nature areas. Arts and culture, unbeatable restaurants and fabulous attractions are at the fingertips of not just young singles, but families with young children, too. You’ll find all of that and more in this year’s Welcome Guide. The most important thing to remember is that Portland is its people. And we as parents have a huge role in determining how the next generation of Portlanders (whether from families who are longtime, native Oregonians or out-of-state) will treat each other. And that makes me hopeful for Portland’s future.

Cedarwood isn't just a school. It's a place for the whole family to learn and grow and connect with community. Cedarwood students are curious and engaged critical thinkers and doers who care about creating a better world. Children in pre-kindergarten through grade 8 are nurtured by a developmentally thoughtful pedagogy, with hands-on experiences both in the classroom and offcampus.
Located just minutes from downtown Portland, Oregon, in the historic Lair Hill Neighborhood, Cedarwood Waldorf School's curriculum weaves together the arts, academics and movement to bring learning to life.
Cedarwood is an independent school founded on the principles of Waldorf education. Cedarwood offers prekindergarten through grade 8 classes, as well as opportunities for parents with very young children to come together to better navigate the early childhood experience. Just as Rudolf Steiner envisioned Waldorf as an education for every child, we honor diversity and actively seek opportunities to learn from all cultures and traditions.

From early childhood through the completion of eighth grade, our students are met with openness to possibility, given time to develop resiliency, and taught skills to turn challenges into opportunities.

MONDAY Peruse the Pearl 8 am: Reboot your morning caffeine routine at Broobee Cafe. This cute shop in the Pearl serves fresh coffee and teas prepared by … a robot! That’s right, all drinks are made by Billie, the animatronic barista. Place your place order — with a human — and then watch the multi-tasking robot take it from there. Kids (and grown-ups, let’s be honest) will delight in Billie grinding coffee beans, steaming milk and grabbing a paper cup before deftly setting it down. This robo barista also dances. Broobee has an assortment of fresh baked goods, including kid-approved doughnuts, plus, bagels, scones and more. 433 NW 10th Ave., broobee.com. 9 am: Once the sugar high for the kids kicks in (and you’re fully caffeinated) walk five minutes south on NW 10th to Powell’s City of Books. This giant and beloved bookstore is a Portland institution and full of undiscovered gems, whether it’s your first or fiftieth visit. The kids’ books section DARIUS KUZMICKAS (pictured left) is stellar with everything from classic board books to the latest YA novels. 1005 W Burnside St., powells.com. 10:30 am: Who wants more sugar?! (Like you even need to ask.) Wailua Shave Ice is the perfect, post-Powell’s treat, and it’s conveniently located across Burnside. This authentic, from-Hawaii outpost features syrups made with fruit juice and purees, like pineapple, guava and mango. We love the Guava Flow, made with guava juice, guava-strawberry puree, haupia foam and topped with toasted coconut. 1022 W Burnside St. Unit O, shaveiceorderspdx.com.
11 am: Take to NW 10th Avenue once again for a half-mile, 10-minute walk to Jamison Square (pictured below) or take the A Loop line on the Portland Streetcar, which arrives every nine minutes. This is a perfect place to get the wiggles out during the warmer months. The highlight of this downtown park is the tide pool-like fountain edged by stone steps. Pro tip: Pack a towel and a change of clothes for the kids ahead of time! 810 NW 11th Ave. 12:30 pm: Reminiscent of Inand-Out, or Shake Shack for those hailing from the East Coast, SuperDeluxe slings the burgers, fries and shakes fast-food dreams are made of.

As we walk into downtown, we are not cocooned from the realities of the homeless and the mental health crises. I remember having to explain to my then 4-year-old why a woman was screaming across the street at no one. It has built up an empathy and an understanding in my kids at an early age, not fear or ignorance.” Rubens also likes that while Goose Hollow is so close to downtown, it has a strong neighborhood feel with long-term residents and a long history. “We have an annual Goose Hollow picnic, hosted and provided by Providence Park. And I really like that we are relatively close to everything — most things in Portland are 20 minutes away because we are in the center of Portland.” Rubens says a downside of living in Goose Hollow is that the houses tend to be older, with no garages and small backyards. Plus, the roads are a little too busy for kids to ride their bikes around the neighborhood.

Did you know that this Northeast neighborhood was originally called Hollyrood? Named after Holyrood, an area in Edinburgh, Scotland, Hollywood permanently changed its name in 1926, which was the same year the ornately facaded Hollywood Theatre opened. Today, Hollywood is one of Portland’s smallest neighborhoods, clocking in at .18 squaremile. But while it’s compact, Hollywood still retains the classic character and charm of historic Portland, but with modern-day conveniences.

Being in a small neighborhood has its benefits, says longtime resident Jason Lesh, who has lived there with his wife and two teen sons since 2010. “It’s a front-porch neighborhood,” he says. “On our block we have families that have moved here from all over, so it’s nice to have different perspectives and backgrounds.” The Leshs can easily walk to the Hollywood Farmers Market, which runs year-round. They also frequent the Hollywood Library. Sometimes those comforts come with a price, though. Lesh says in the decade-plus his family has lived there, home prices in the neighborhood (like much of Portland) have tripled.

While Hollywood residents can enjoy the sprawling greenery of the adjacent Grant Park, sometimes playtime adventures require indoor spaces. (Hello rainy days!) Don’t miss the aptly named The Wiggle Room. Jessica and Chris Wade opened the 2,000 square-foot space for kids to play and socialize — now even more important in our COVID world. The Wiggle Room features a — regularlycleaned — padded floor and a 16-foot by 20-foot play structure. Another bonus: The Wiggle Room offers snacks for the littles and coffee, beer and wine for the grown-ups. For older kids and budding gamers, Wedgehead has all your arcade needs. For $12, play unlimited pinball at 25 machines of all different genres, including super heroes, aliens, villains and more. Plus, the arcade serves up a solid menu of delicious burgers. For some supreme browsing, head to Antique Alley. This thrifting oasis is located downstairs in the Hollywood 42nd Street Station. Wander through a maze of booths filled with toys, clothes, glassware and ephemera. Continue the history trip by stepping inside the classic Hollywood Theatre, a Northeast Portland icon for 95 years. (In 1983 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently undergoing renovation.) The theater features diverse programming — such as Kung Fu throwbacks and family-friendly vintage animation — and families can enjoy matinee tickets for $4 for children 12 and under and $7 for adults. Hillside in Northwest Portland is an urban neighborhood with small-town charm. Bordered by Forest Park to the north, and Burnside to the south, Hillside is only a hop, skip and a jump away from the Alphabet District and its iconic restaurants and shops. Yet the neighbors know each other by name and can often be found playing pickleball together or walking their dogs on the lawn in front of Hillside Community Center. The center is the heart of this small, forested community, a gathering hub where many of the neighborhood children attend Pipster Prep Preschool. Though small, the neighborhood packs a punch. A few steps north and you’re in the woods. A few steps east, and you’re in the city.

THE CENTRAL OREGON COAST: AN EXPLORER’S PARADISE WITH ROOM TO ROAM Hoping to avoid the worst of the coastal crowds? Skip Oregon’s lovely, but immensely busy north coast and angle the family chariot down U.S. Highway 101 to the upper half of the central coast. This winding stretch of road-trippable shoreline offers loads of family-oriented lodging, dining and recreation, dotted along the water like a string of pearls. And it’s got lighthouses, too!
YOUR HOME BASE: LINCOLN CITY Full of classic seashore diversions (and sometimes rather windy!) Lincoln City is the perfect place to drop your bags while exploring the wonders of the central coast. The Anchor Inn Resort (theanchorinnresort.com) offers staterooms and funky cabins set around a jovial courtyard peppered with kitschy nautical treasures. This large, kid-calibrated compound has everything from a tree-andsand-lined croquet course to a game room, sandbox, and covered fire pits perfect for roasting marshmallows and weenies in any weather. Pro tip: Unless the roar of diesel engines is your idea of a lullaby, request a room set back from the highway. Rising early to set out in search of adventure? EXPLORING THE CENTRAL COAST DEPOE BAY The main drag is bursting with antique shops and treat stops, but the crowning jewel of this busy little town, which doubles as the world’s smallest harbor, is Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Whale Watching Center. (Hours have varied since COVID-19 began, check the schedule before you go: stateparks.oregon.gov.) Summer isn’t prime whale migration season, but the whale-spotting odds are always good at this seawall. Crabbing here is also year-round, though you’ll have the best luck in late summer, when those tasty crustaceans really fill out. If the weather is disagreeable, watch for those telltale spouts from the comfort of The Horn Public House & Brewery, a delicious pub across the way from the Whale Watching Center whose spacious upstairs features prime views, minus the whipping winds. Their nongreasy, fresh-caught seafood preparations and strong drinks are perfect for bolstering parental resolve after a day spent schlepping littles.
OTTER CREST LOOP AND OTTER ROCK Rain or shine, a drive along Otter Crest Loop (pictured below) really delivers when it comes to scenic stop-offs. The loop’s high point (literally!) is the Cape Foulweather viewpoint, perched 500 feet above the ocean and proffering soaring, mist-shrouded views. Selfie time! End your drive at Otter Rock, an adorable hamlet famous for the Otter Rock Marine Reserve and Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area (pictured opposite page). featuring a frothing hollow rock formation that spits out waves large enough to occasionally douse bystanders. A riot of swirling colors makes this unique rock intriguing (and photogenic) at high tide or low. Right nearby is Otter Crest Beach, a sprawling surfer stop perfect for wading or rockhounding. Pro tip: It’s a long climb down from street to sand. This beach isn’t suited for strollers, mobility devices, or anybody who requires assistance walking. Before you leave, grab a bite at 32

SEATTLE, OLYMPIA AND ASHFORD: URBAN ADVENTURING WITH A SIDE OF MOUNTAIN AIR Our northerly neighbor is calling! On water and on land, Seattle is jam-packed with family fun, but why rush a good thing? Break up the journeys there and back with a pit stop in the happening capital of Olympia and a worth-the-detour drive to Ashford, a cozy town nestled west of the main entrance to Mount Rainier National Park.
PIT STOP: OLYMPIA Stop midway and stretch your legs in Washington’s congenial state capital. Pick up an artisan sandwich to-go at The Lucky Lunchbox where kiddie options abound and the turkey club is a true crowd-pleaser. Grab something caffeinated from Olympia Coffee Roasting next door, then head to the Hands On Children’s Museum (pictured left) to get those wiggles out. Paint on the walls in a maker space, pull the taps at a pint-sized play brewpub, and explore a replica longhouse. Pro tip: Babies under 17 months play for free! (hocm.org)
WORTHY DETOUR: ASHFORD AND MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK Craving some extra-fresh air? Hop off I-5 and head for the wilds of Mount Rainier National Park (nps.gov/mora). Ashford, six miles from the park’s southwest entrance, is a great jumping-off point for sampling the park’s wonders, which include wildflower meadows, waterfalls and a mighty old-growth forest, all in their prime from May to October. Pick up a hearty trail lunch from Basecamp Bar & Grill, then hit the Nisqually Vista Trail, which delivers stunning glacier views along an easy milelong jaunt. The 1.75-mile Alta Vista Trail loop poses a worthy 1.8-mile challenge for older kiddos with its 600-foot elevation gain. The reward: fantastic summit views. Cute nearby lodging is abundant if you decide to stay over. Pro tip: To avoid the worst crowds, hit Rainier in June or September and arrive at the park entrance bright and early; by 10 am, things get busy. VISIT RAINIER

This affordable lodging option scores points for its suites, which come with a pullout couch and separate bedroom (great for those traveling with babies), plus a balcony, full kitchen, and generous breakfast buffet that’s open early. Pro tip: Request a room with a view of the Space Needle. It’s just a 10-minute walk to Seattle Center (seattlecenter. com), home to the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass (best for older kids), and Artists at Play, an artist-designed playground boasting an eye-popping 30-foot rope climbing tower (pictured top), ADA-accessible carousel and whimsical labyrinth. 36

EXPLORING SEATTLE DOWNTOWN DONE RIGHT Try hitting Pike Place Market (pictured above, left) between 8 am to 9 am — fish aren’t yet flying and stalls are still setting up, which equals a remarkably less-chaotic visit (pikeplacemarket.org). Make your sticky contribution to the legendary Gum Wall (pictured above, right), then skip the tedium of the endless line outside the original Starbucks and step instead into the colorful neighboring storefront, Maíz (pictured bottom). Fresh masa is just the beginning of the magic at this Mexican tortilleria and street food stop, whose fun snacks feature 59 types of corn. Our faves: The tamales and the stellar fresh-fruit cups. You can also fill your belly (and soul!) with fluffy fry bread and Indian tacos at Off the Rez Cafe, a Native American grab-and-go spot on the University of Washington campus.

WATERY DELIGHTS Seattle sits on an isthmus, with 41% of its total area underwater! No surprise, then, that so much of the fun here happens on or near the wet stuff. Book a one-hour
Viator Seattle Harbor Cruise (viator.com/Seattle-tourism/) and explore Elliott Bay and Seattle Harbor as you learn about Seattle’s historic waterfront and motor through the city’s mighty shipping terminal. Ahoy! Next, test your mettle aboard the Seattle Great Wheel (seattlegreatwheel.com), a formidable Ferris wheel at Pier 57 that towers 175 feet high and glows with 500,000 LED lights on weekend evenings. Another great water-adjacent pick: The Ballard Locks (pictured above). This national historic site, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, keeps Seattle’s water traffic flowing through two working locks, moving everything from kayaks to ocean tugs, and you can catch the action up close (ballardlocks.org). The Fish Ladder Education Center and a wellappointed museum round out the attractions.
KEEPING SEATTLE WEIRD No tour of Seattle is complete without a visit to see the city’s snaggle-toothed unofficial mascot, the Fremont Troll. Grab pastries from the nearby Milstead & Co., then live the steampunk dream at Gas Works Park (seattle.gov/parks/gas-works-park), a one-of-a-kind 20-acre park set in the shadow of a former gasification plant (pictured below, left) along the shores of Lake Union (pictured below, right). The playground has structures accessible to all ages and abilities, and the waterfront grass makes a dreamy picnic spot.

Take a Dip
Deep-fried Goodness
If the name of your food cart is Jojo (pictured right), then you better deliver when it comes to fried potato wedges. And Jojo does. My whole family raved over the seasoned potatoes. But the hefty fried-chicken sandwiches are the real reason to visit the cart. The chicken bacon ranch sandwich hits the spot. And if you like your chicken pleasantly spicy, don’t be afraid to make your sandwich “Nashville hot”— it won’t be an over-the-top, mouth-burning hot. Definitely order a side of fried Brussels sprouts topped with Crystal hot sauce and honey. Pro tip: The “little cheeseburger” is the perfect size for kids. — D.C. 3582 SE Powell Blvd., jojopdx.com. $$
Veggie Vietnamese At Mama Dút, slow-cooked jackfruit and “chicken-fried” oyster mushrooms take the place of pork and chicken in banh mi sandwiches, bao buns and more. For proprietor and mom Thuy Pham, bringing Vietnamese cuisine back to its vegetarian roots is extremely personal — and luckily for Portland’s vegan families — extremely delicious. Pro tip: Don’t miss the pretty vegan cupcakes, whoopie pies and other desserts. — D.C. 1414 SE Morrison St., mamadut.com. $$ GF VG
Birria may have been a recent Mexican food trend on social media, but for the folks at Birrieria La Plaza in east Portland, it’s a family tradition going back to the 1960s. This fire-engine red food cart doles out our favorite birria tacos, filled with juicy, slow-simmered beef and encased in crunchy, cheesy corn tortillas. It’s the perfect vehicle to dip into the seasoned broth known as consome. If you want to truly experience birria — and the genius of Birrieria La Plaza — try the Plaza Plate, which includes a taco, mulita, tostada, quesadilla and a small cup of consome. For the pickiest of eaters, there’s even a plain cheese quesadilla. — T.H. 600 SE 146th Ave., tacoslaplaza.com $-$$
The Sushi Standard A favorite of the PDX Parent staff is Sushi Mazi on SE Division. This cozy restaurant offers classic and modern sushi rolls and Japanese standards like gyoza, tempura veggies and miso soup. For burgeoning sushi fans, there’s everything from the standard veggie or California rolls to the adventurous White Pearl Roll with creamy scallop, avocado and cucumber and topped with seared blackpepper tuna. (Sushi Mazi also has a great selection of nigiri and sashimi.) If your kids don’t like fish, order them the chicken teriyaki or the chicken katsu bowl. — T.H. 2126 SE Division St., sushimazi.com $-$$ GF

NE Carb Comforts For fresh, house-made pasta, look no further than Gumba on Alberta (pictured above). Upon picking up our order, we immediately noticed the stylish interior. Take note, this is a great date-night spot. Gumba has a rotating menu and its pasta, perfectly al dente, comes in portions that are great for sharing or leftovers. The Pappardelle is a great option for younger palates and is made with the most tender braised beef, breadcrumbs and Pecorino cheese. Pro tip: For kids who wanna skip the pomp, Gumba makes butter-Parmesan noodles upon request. Another standout for us was the frybread. Neapolitan style, it’s crispy on the edges, chewy in the middle and topped with Parmesan cheese. This was the best bread we’ve had all year. Get more than one order,
because you will fight over it. And don’t miss dessert: We loved the cannoli, filled with whipped cream, chocolate and Butterfinger. Better order more than one of those, too. — T.H. 1733 NE Alberta St., gumba-pdx.com $-$$$
Roundabout At 24th and Meatballs, the love for hearty, round balls of tender beef, chicken and pork is all in the name. And meatballs are what they do best. From the standout Costanza, a hefty sub made with three chicken-Parmesan meatballs and slathered in cheesy sauce to Nonna’s Special, with three traditional Italian meatballs atop spaghetti with tomato sauce. And vegan families rejoice. There are vegan meatball options, for both sandwiches and pizza. (You can also opt to build your own creation.) This Northeast joint also serves East Coast-style pizza — by the slice or whole pie — with thin, chewy crusts. With all these options, it’s the ideal choose-your-own-mealtime adventure for everyone in the family. — T.H. 2341 NE Glisan St., 24thandmeatballs.com $-$$ VG
Stay Calm & Drink Tea Get those pinkies up as you sample the dainty sandwiches and pastries from Lovejoy’s Tea Room of Portland. A seasonal selection of tea sandwiches and salads, crumpets with lemon curd, sweet pastries and more come in the RoyalTEA, which will sate hearty appetites. And for the scaled down Royal Wee Tea, children 12 and under get a choice of kid-pleasing sandwiches such as Nutella and strawberries, or cream cheese and jelly. (And hey, no crusts!) Available for pickup or in-person dining. — D.C. 3286 NE Killingsworth St., lovejoysportland.com $$$ GF VG DENISE CASTAÑON

You’ll find a wide variety of Indian and Pakistani favorites at Silsila the Flaming Tandoor. Staffer Jill Weisensee says her boys love the rich, flavorful butter chicken, the marinated, tandoor-baked chicken, rice and naan flatbread. Bonus: There’s naan for every taste including garlic, green chilestuffed, spinach and cheese, and plain. Vegetarians will rejoice over the long list of vegetarian and vegan curries. — D.C. 819 N Killingsworth St., Silsilapdx.com $$ VG
