Emmaline Barber Age 82, passed away at her d aughters residence in Ocala, FL on Saturday November 10, 2018. Emmaline was a lifelong resident of Arcadia, FL born on May 26, 1936 in Winter Haven, FL. She was a homemaker and raised six children and enjoyed watching T.V. solving word search puzzles and listening to Steve Harvey but most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren always making each one feel special.

Clifford R. Wilkins Age-81, of Arcadia, FL passed away in Sarasota, FL on Saturday November 10, 2018. Mr. Wilkins worked as a pattern maker in the Automobile Manufacturing industry for many years. He enjoyed working on his car, working around the house and spending time with his family and his extended family Wilk and Rob Frasure in South Carolina. He is survived by his significant other Brenda Frasure of Arcadia, FL; one son John Wilkins of Canton, MI; two brothers Charles (Joan) Wilkins of Roscommon, MI and Russell (Lise) Wilkins of Sebring, FL; two sisters, Mary Setter of Saskatchewan, Canada and Nora Cassidy of Rawdon, Canada; two granddaughters; Ashley and Kelsey Wilkins both of Canton, MI. Mr. Wilkins is preceded in death by his spouse Janis Wilkins; his parents, Arthur and Ethel Wilkins and one brother; George Wilkins.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Austin (Debbie) Barber of Jack, Alabama; four daughters, Elizabeth Ann (Steve) Bevans of Arcadia, FL; Shirley Barber Williams of Ocala, FL; Linda Mae (Steve) Campbell also of Ocala, FL and Teresa Belle (Ricky) Kidd of Jack, Alabama; one brother, Raymond (Aratha) Jones of Punta Gorda, FL; one sister Patricia Ann Ard of Arbundale, FL. Ralph E. “Bud” Lewis, age 77, Jackie E. Bud was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be sorely missed by all. After graduating high school, Bud attended Florida Atlantic University, where he obtained his BS in Business Administration and later earned his MBA at Nova University. Prior to moving to Arcadia, Bud worked in the family Steel Erection and General Contracting business. In 1976, he was selected to open the Sears Catalog Store in Arcadia, which he proudly and successfully operated for more than 16 years. He enjoyed serving his customers and the diversity of the products that his store provided, affectionately called “Mr. Bud” by many of his customers. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed reading historical novels and non-fiction history books and loved to share his knowledge of history with others. Although hunting, fishing, and history were his passions, he loved nothing more than his wife, daughter and his grandchildren and the time and memories they shared.

Jackie was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many and will be sorely missed. She enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and spending time with everyone. Each year Jackie was very active with Operation Christmas Child. In her spare time she like to do crossword puzzles. She is survived by her husband and best friend of 50 plus years Richard Mackey of Wauchula, FL; one daughter Stephanie Mackey Steyer; one son David (Jeannie) Mackey; five grandchildren Kelen Steyer, Kyle (Dora) Steyer, Kacey Steyer, Kaitlin Steyer and Michael Cross; two great-grandchildren Kimber Steyer and Ayvee Steyer all of Wauchula. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Jerry Hall.

James William Gaddy, age 81, of Arcadia, FL, passed away Sunday morning, November 18, 2018 at home with his family.
He was the only son of James Hovey and Olive McKenzie Gaddy of Dillon, SC. He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Gaddy, Arcadia, FL, son, Robert Gaddy, of Arcadia, FL, son, Henry (Richard Ryan) Gaddy, Saint Petersburg, FL, granddaughter, Brandy (Garrett)Johnson, Parish, FL and a grandson, Schuyler Gaddy of Port Charlotte, FL; along with two great grandchildren Grady and Colton. William was born on October 30, 1937 in Dillon, SC and worked together as a home builder of Gaddy & Son, in the Carolinas with his father. Once married, he moved with his wife Pat to Lumberton, NC where they began White Wing Farms, farming chickens, producing feed, along with a processing facility allowing shipment of eggs all over the eastern United States. After retiring from the chicken farming in NC, he moved his family to Arcadia, FL to live on 75 acres of wilderness along the Peace River in 1982. Shortly hereafter, William, his wife Pat, and son Robert, planned and later built "Little Willie's RV Park" in Arcadia to accommodate winter residents from the north during the winter months. Once retired from that venture, William went back to farming, raising fresh produce and cattle for a short period of time, thus allowing him and his wife to travel the United States. Shortly thereafter, William and his wife relocated to a property on Kings Highway, where he lived out his final years with his wife of nearly 57 years. William was one of a kind. A visitation with be conducted on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 7:00 until 8:00 pm, at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 No. Hillsborough Avenue, Arcadia, FL. Now Accepting New Customers The first Thanksgiving after moving overseas, I decided to treat my family to a traditional turkey dinner. I went to the closest store, which happened to be French-speaking, and approached the area where a variety of meats were laid out. Not being fluent in French, I looked and tried to determine on my own whether the large poultry breasts I saw were turkey or goose. The butcher indicated that he was ready to help me. I asked in broken French if he spoke English; he replied, 'No.' I tried again, asking if he spoke German; again, he replied, 'No.' I pointed at the poultry breasts, then tucked my thumbs in my armpits, flapped my arms, and said, 'Gobble, gobble?' The butcher broke into a smile as he replied, 'Oui.' Embarrassing, sure, but I ended up with a turkey and the butcher got a laugh!

“A STRANGE REQUEST” Peace River Shopper
A short time ago, one of my wife’s cousins passed away. He had been battling cancer and we all know how bad things can get. He fought and fought that stuff with everything he had. He even went against all odds and advice from the doctors and went up to Georgia to go hunting with my wife’s brothers. They had been hunting together since their early days and he just wanted to go one last time. His words were, “ If I am alive, I will be there”. Sure enough he was and sure enough he was there. I knew all this before he passed away, but what I didn’t know was what his wife told me when we walked up to her at his viewing. She asked me if I had a Peace River Shopper with me. It just so happened that I didn’t. We had dropped the last ones off at Sonny’s in Port Charlotte and I did not keep one. I assumed that she asked me for one to see how the obituary turned out. I assured her that we would get her as many as she wanted and told her that his obituary looked good. The strange thing to me was what she said then. “Oh no, I wanted one to put in his casket with him” she said. As we were all looking at each other, she continued. “Every week when the Shopper comes out, my husband makes sure he gets one to read. Every week when he gets it, he sits down and says that he is going to read the obituaries. That way if his name wasn’t in there, he would know that he was still alive. Well, this week he is in there, and I want to put one in his casket with him so he can read it for himself.” I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to cry. To think that our Shopper was so important to be put in a casket, was very flattering to me. I had never thought that way about the Shopper before. That was a couple of weeks ago now, but I can still hear her words as she told me that story. I still have a hard time with it, but I couldn’t just let it go, I had to say something about it. This Thanksgiving, this man will not be with his family. For the first time in a really long time, he won’t be eating dinner around the table and making jokes as he always did, but maybe you will. Maybe you will have your family, and you will sit around the table enjoying and thanking God for his blessings. Thanksgiving is a day for the family. A special day that we can see people that we haven’t seen in a long time, so don’t miss this chance. Here at the Shopper, I would just like to thank all of you for your readership and your friendship all these years.
