Spring 2019
Seasons Livin’ in the Hyphen
Moroccan Women
55 Years of Friendship
Spring 2019 Every Volunteer, whether they’re posted in a dusty desert oasis or the snowcapped Atlas Mountains, is impacted by the changing seasons. Those first winter months, for many of us, are filled with uncertainty and uneasiness as we learn about our community and our place within it. As the days grow longer our spirits rise, bolstered by promises of new opportunities and future plans. Then summer hits, and all our grand designs evaporate in the shimmering heat as life slows to a halt. By the time school starts again the nights have cooled off (if you’re lucky) and people we haven’t seen for months reappear as if by magic, chock full of ideas and ready to work. As the nights grow longer and we approach the one-year mark, that old uncertainty creeps back. We reflect on how much we’ve actually accomplished in our service, and the cycle begins anew. All of us must contend with this cycle, or some variation of it, during our service. In this issue, PeaceWorks staff have compiled an assortment of poetry, prose, artwork and photography from current Volunteers and the Moroccans they work with that addresses this subject in a unique or noteworthy way. It is our hope that you find their pieces as engaging and thought-provoking as we do. Finally, we received a huge number of submissions for the spring edition, more than I could have hoped for and far more than we could ever fit into the magazine. I want to personally thank everyone who emailed us, it takes a lot of courage to send in your creative work and I am profoundly grateful to be serving with such talented and dedicated people. Without you this magazine would not be possible.
