Kicking off the Party Weekend

With only three years of professional appearances, DJ TDon (AKA T’Don Marquis) has quickly established himself as a multi-talented artist and sensational performance DJ across North America. Up next, he is headlining the Dark + Frutty party that kicks off the Joining Hearts Weekend. David caught up with the busy DJ ahead of his return to Atlanta.

You’re coming to Atlanta to open the Joining Hearts weekend at the Heretic with Dark + Frutty party. But you actually used to live in Atlanta, right?

I get this question a lot, but I’ve never actually lived in Atlanta. However, it was in the works many years ago as I planned on moving there for an internship for my undergraduate program in 2016. My degree is in Kinesiology, and I chose to complete my internship out of state, which was Oklahoma at the time. I traveled frequently to Atlanta in 2016 to start building my life there – housing, school, work, gym, friendships, etc. – but life had different plans for me at that time. I ended up moving to Miami, Florida to participate in an internship, which is where I ultimately stayed after graduation until my career shifted into software sales in 2017. I then moved to Dallas in January of 2018 and have been here since.

How does it feel to be returning to Atlanta?

Atlanta is and always will be a second home for me! It holds a special place in my heart because of the ever-lasting memories and friendships I’ve cultivated there over the

years. It’s also where I discovered what “Circuit parties” were – funny enough! It was a fantastic introduction as I was surrounded by loving friends and some of the best music the industry had to offer. I often reflect on that time in my life as it was when I came out to my family and close friends, so I have many nostalgic and joyous memories that I hold onto dearly. This in turn brings out the best and deepest emotions in me, which we all know makes for the best DJ sets.

I’ve watched you grow as a DJ, and you’ve had quite the trajectory. What do you think you can attribute to your success as a DJ?

I stick to what I love and how I feel. I gravitate to music that makes me happy and genuinely makes me feel “some type of way.” Personally, I like to describe it that way because we’re all capable of feeling multiple emotions when it comes to music. It’s the universal language. Beginning this journey during the pandemic, I simply wanted to share my love of music with others through mix sets and playlists on applications like Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud. At that time, I had no idea I was capable of becoming an international

DAVID Magazine pg| 8

DJ and Producer, but I am incredibly grateful every day that life has presented me with the opportunity to do so. It’s the most gratifying feeling in the world to express myself and my love of music while I get to bring happiness to others as they dance their worries away. At the end of the day, or event in this case, it’s not about me or them, it’s about us, together, as one, on a journey through sound.

What other events will you be attending Joining Hearts Weekend? Will you be at the pool party?

I will certainly be attending the Main Event at Piedmont Park with DJ’s Brian Kent and GSP. It’s quite a magical event, and I wouldn’t miss it as it’s been a few years since I have been able to attend. I always try my best to make it to as many events as I can as I enjoy supporting my colleagues and event organizers, especially in Atlanta. It will be an incredible weekend of music with Isis Muretech, Alex Acosta, Joe Gauthreaux, Cesar Hernandez, and Jerac spinning. I’m ecstatic to be included amongst these industry giants!

What’s next for you as a DJ?

I have quite the schedule over the next year, but in the next few weeks, I will be DJing in Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday, August 4th for “Cruise Pride”, Chicago, Illinois on Friday, August 11th for CircuitMOM “Housegasm”, Montral, Quebec on Sunday, August 13th for Fierté “Pride” Montréal, and Washington, D.C. on Friday, August 25 and 27th for Bunker “Haus Friday’s” and “Disco Daddy”. I will also be in Los Angeles, New York City, Dallas, Nashville, Palm Springs and Puerto Vallarta before the end of the year!

When can we see you in Atlanta again?

It’s in the works! More to be announced soon.

You can catch DJ TDon on Friday

July 28 9 pm – 3 am for the Joining Hearts kickoff party at the Heretic.

Get On Bobby Newberry’s Rollercoaster

Bobby Newberry’s debut album, “Dopamine Rollercoaster,” is a sonic representation of the turbulent path many of us traverse in our quest for happiness. Reflecting from his Los Angeles abode, Bobby Newberry contemplates the highs and lows of life, noting, “Life is full of ups and downs. It can often feel like we’re on an emotional rollercoaster, but that’s what makes it all worth it. It’s the thrill of the chase, the agony of defeat, and the rush of excitement when we finally achieve our goals.” Newberry takes listeners on an enchanting and mind-altering journey by fusing diverse musical genres throughout the album. Expect heartpounding house beats, electrifying dance tracks, and even soulful mid-tempo tunes.

“I personally penned each song on Dopamine Rollercoaster,” Newberry adds, underscoring their embodiment of the various moments and moods he has experienced in recent years. The album includes captivating tracks like “Escape,” a sultry house and disco fusion with a mesmerizing bassline, and “Blackout,” Newberry’s anthem for endless nights of revelry. Notably, there’s “Freak,” a high-octane duet with drag star Rhea Litre that encourages living life authentically and unapologetically, and “Ride,” a feel-good summer anthem about embracing risks and pursuing dreams.

The order in which fans experience the tracks on the album is crucial. “I dedicated considerable time to arranging them in the perfect order,” Newberry chuckles. “Once I locked in their placements, I added outros to certain songs to ensure the journey felt just right.”

Bobby Newberry commenced his music career as a choreographer for Eminem and has since collaborated with top-tier artists such as Nicki Minaj, The Pussycat Dolls, Missy Elliot, and Lil’ Wayne. His choreography has graced popular television shows like Dancing with the Stars and X-Factor. In 2014, Bobby Newberry released his debut single and music video, “Dirrty Up (featuring Jessie and The Toy Boys),” followed by his EP, The Newberry Special.

Theproduction of “Dopamine Rollercoaster” was helmed by Sam J Garfield and th3ry, with notable contributions from Fia Nyxx, Rhea Litré, and Sam J Garfield. The album’s release signifies a pivotal moment for Newberry, bringing a sense of closure and marking the culmination of a significant chapter in his life. “This is my inaugural full album. It’s something I’ve desired for quite some time—a personal milestone that I’m immensely proud of.” Newberry aspires for the songs on “Dopamine Rollercoaster” to inspire and invigorate listeners, potentially serving as a soundtrack to their own exhilarating adventures. “Regardless of where you stand on your journey, remember that you’re not alone, and with self-belief, anything is possible,” he affirms.

While diligently working on his second album, Bobby Newberry plans to unveil the next thrilling chapter of his musical odyssey later this summer. “Dopamine Rollercoaster” is available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all major digital platforms. Stay connected and follow Bobby Newberry on Instagram @bobbynewberry for the latest updates.

Wicked Company Members and Joining Hearts Host “Witches Night Off” at Lips!

Monday, July 24, will be a rather…wicked… evening. Join your friends from Atlanta, Kansas, and Oz for a spectacular night at Lips Atlanta off Buford Highway as company members from the Broadway National Tour Wicked, host a cabaret benefit.

Joining Hearts, Atlanta’s leading nonprofit fundraising to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, is part of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) National Grantee Program. These grants help the Atlanta organization further its mission to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in our city. Over the last years, metro Atlanta has found itself in another HIV/AIDS crisis with record infection rates since the 1980s.

In 2022 BC/EFA awarded over $8.5 million in grants nationwide to help local communities. With these grants, organizations like Joining Hearts can do more to slow this infection rate, help those needing medicine and shelter, and provide education to keep our community safe.

Joining Hearts hosts the ever-popular event, the annual summer pool party at Piedmont Park, as a stable for fundraising. This year’s theme is Tutti Fruity with DJ GSP and DJ Brian Kent. Last year, they raised over $120,000. This year, in addition to the pool party, is a unique event that happens 2 or 3 times a year!

This year, in conjunction with the touring show, Wicked company members (a mix of the cast and crew) are hosting a cabaret benefit where they can show their talents outside of their Ozian costumes and performances. Wicked, the 2003 musical about Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book of the same name,

has returned to Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre from July 5 through 30.

The company will put on their benefit, “Witches Night Off,” to help fundraise for both Joining Hearts and the BC/EFA. Tickets are $40 for General Admission at 7:30 and $75 for VIP at 6:30. There will be a silent and live auction in addition to the cabaret performance put on by the Wicked company. Silent auction items include signed sheet music by Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz, a makeup brush that transforms Olivia Valli into the infamous green Elphaba, and a replica The Wizard of Oz ruby slippers. In addition, there are two extraordinary live auction prizes: backstage passes that grant winners to see the greenifying process and a framed Wicked vinyl signed by the OG Glinda: Kristen Chenoweth.

VIP access allows patrons to meet and mingle with the night’s performers with cocktails, laughs, and flares from 6:30 to 7:30.

This will be a night unlike any other. It’ll change your life just as Dorothy’s was changed by that fateful tornado.

Tidbit: the 1980s euphemism, “A friend of Dorothy’s,” was how gay men learned to meet other gay men. Judy Garland made strides in the liberation of LGBTQ+ rights. She was and is always a friend of the gays; be a friend to Dorothy, and get your tickets ASAP for the spectacular “Witches Night Off.”

new Queer Titles to Read Before the Homophobes Ban Them

In an era when books by or about LGBTQ+ people are being taken off library shelves and banned in grade schools, there’s never been a more important time to support queer literature. Remember: Representation not only matters, it saves lives. LGBTQ+ people will not be erased, as the pages of these books prove.

Fiction

“The Salt Grows Heavy”

A mermaid, a prince and a plague doctor all walk into a bar. Actually, it’s not a bar but a village of bloodthirsty children. Author Cassandra Khaw’s wildly original novel is a dark fairy tale that defies easy explanation. Part nightmare, part romance, Khaw crafts this story with poetic prose and an eye for the macabre.

The Adult” by Bronwyn Fischer

A college freshman. An older woman. An affair. Bronwyn Fischer’s “The Adult” is a beautifully written novel about what it means to find yourself as a young person and whether finding yourself is even really possible when you’re consumed by a relationship with someone older and, presumably, wiser than you.

“Confidence” by Rafael Frumkin

A novel about a couple of gay scalawags who con the rich? Yes, please. After meeting at a juvenile delinquent boot camp, Orson and Ezra become partners in a life of crime. When they embark on the biggest scam of their career, targeting unfulfilled rich people, things don’t exactly go as planned. Written in an engaging voice, “Confidence” is a book about how it pays to be morally bankrupt. Or does it?

Non-Fiction

“Hi Honey, I’m Homo” by Matt Baume

You can learn a lot about cultural attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people by watching TV. Decades of it, in fact. And if you’re thinking, “Well who has the time for that?” worry not. Matt Baume has you covered. “Hi Honey, I’m Homo” examines how the fight for LGBTQ+ equality has been reflected through TV history. From “All In the Family” to “Soap” to “The Golden Girls” to “Modern Family,” Baume illustrates how sitcoms shaped and continue to shape the way people see LGBTQ+ people and how LGBTQ+ people see themselves.

“We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film” by Tre’vell Anderson

If you start every morning with the “What A Day” podcast, then you already know that Black trans journalist Tre’vell Anderson is engaging, hilarious and smart as hell. In “We See Each Other,” Anderson traces both a personal and on-screen history of transgender visibility through movies and TV shows like “Some Like It Hot,” “Boys Don’t Cry” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This is an absolute must-read.

“We Set the Night on Fire: Igniting the Gay Revolution” by Martha Shelley

During this time of intense backlash against LGBTQ+

rights, it’s wise to turn to the activists who were on the forefront of this movement to remember our history and how far we’ve come. “We Set the Night on Fire” recounts lesbian founder of the Gay Liberation Front Martha Shelley’s story of fighting for equality. It’s a personal history that cannot be separated from the history of the larger Civil Rights Movement. May this book inspire more LGBTQ+ people and allies to take to the streets and fight for our lives.

Memoir

“Boy Wander” by Jobert E. Abueva

In University of Michigan alum Jobert Abueva’s memoir, he navigates multiple identities as he grows up. A star student at a Catholic boys’ school in Tokyo and, after school, a call boy for rich foreign men. A child born in Manila and coming of age in Kathmandu and Bangkok before moving to the U.S. in the peak Reagan 1980s. A young man craving his family’s love and acceptance but afraid to be fully honest. Abueva’s road to self-acceptance was not an easy one, and this memoir is not always an easy one to read, but Abueva’s honesty makes it ultimately rewarding.

“Pageboy” by Elliot Page

They say celebrities have no private lives, and to some extent, with paparazzi around every corner, that’s true. But one’s interior life is a whole different story, and for Elliot Page, that life was very different from the public life on display after “Juno” brought Page wide acclaim and stardom. “Pageboy” tells the story of Page refusing to be crushed by Hollywood’s demands and society’s expectations and deciding to live his truth.

Tweakerworld: A Memoir” by Jason Yamas

How does one accidentally become one of San Francisco’s biggest crystal meth dealers? You start with Beanie Babies. OK, not exactly. But like a lot of Yamas’s life — past, present and future — it’s complicated. “Tweakerworld” explores Yamas’s history of addiction, from Adderall to meth, his career as a filmmaker, gay culture, his relationships with his family and boyfriends and his often drug-fueled sex life. “Tweakerworld” is brutally honest and beautifully told.
