The Labels that Surround Us \By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Photo: The Coca-Cola Company, Diet Coke [unlabeled] Having a history of being a brand that has always been ‘there, Diet Coke is stripping a limited run of cans of their labels to spark a conversation about just that – labels. Peach spoke to Coca-Cola’s Group Director for the Diet Coke Brand, Kerri Kopp, about the campaign, its spokespeople, and how you can join the conversation. Recently, Diet Coke released their Unlabeled campaign. Tell us a little bit about it. Diet Coke has set out to create a multi-year, purpose-driven platform with [unlabeled]. The brand is leaning into The Coca-Cola Company’s rich history of celebrating diversity and inclusion by removing its label from a select run of cans in order to start a dialogue about the labels that surround us. This first phase of [unlabeled] is particularly focused on fostering conversations about the complexities that labels in today’s society, because labels today are tricky and can mean different things to different people – from the fought for and earned to the divisive and imposed. Discussing these labels can lead to more insight into a variety of groups and communities and create more cross-community connections. The campaign engages with ’touchy’ topics like gender, sexuality, race, disability, ethnicity, et cetera that traditionally are not associated with a marketing campaign – why this big and different step? Diet Coke has a history and heritage of being ‘there’ – whether as a moment of uplift or as a badge of confidence, it has always been a part of people’s lives. Now, we’re re-positioning the brand for today’s world which includes fostering a richly diverse community that is reflective of a whole new generation. We’re excited to put a spotlight on a number of communities and groups, and it’s our pledge to continue to do so as we evolve [unlabeled]. How do you think a brand like Diet Coke can push a conversation about labels? We knew Diet Coke couldn’t create this conversation alone, so we enlisted the help of several communities, purpose-driven partners that have been connected to The Coca-Cola Company for the past several years, including the American Association of People with Disabilities, the American Indian College Fund, Ascend, Essence Communications, GLAAD, the Hispanic Federation, Human Rights Campaign and National Urban League. Multiple one-on-one sessions with these partners – as well as The Coca-Cola Company’s internal Business Resource Groups – helped vet and shape [unlabeled], not only providing input and guidance at the outset but throughout the development process. The campaign pledges to create more space – how do you plan to execute this pledge? Diet Coke pledges to consistently look for ways to use its resources, relationships and reach to create [unlabeled] spaces
8 | 07.24.19
where people are free to be themselves, and it’s starting with its own spaces. In 2019, the brand committed to: ·
·
·
Dedicating high-profile out-of-home real estate in New York City to feature a variety of brave, [unlabeled] voices and faces who are living their lives with unbridled confidence. Turning Diet Coke social channels into a platform for others. Representatives from a variety of groups will consistently take control of these channels to not only discuss labels but to also bring visibility to the important work that’s being done in their community/communities. Leveraging its space on-the-ground at select events to host conversations and discussions about labels.
Tell us a little bit about the various spokespeople in the campaign – where did you find them? We identified the individuals featured throughout the campaign through our community partners and also from inside The Coca Cola Company to bring [unlabeled] to life by featuring a variety of Coca-Cola employees – together, they represent the rich diversity within the walls of the Company. How will the campaign rollout? Where will we see it? The heart of the campaign is a centralized hub at dietcoke. com/unlabeled and today, the brand is releasing a video manifesto online and across social featuring members from a variety of groups and communities, each sharing their personal experience with and perspectives about labels. In addition to the digital presence, Diet Coke is traveling the country to bring [unlabeled] to audiences at a diverse series of events. At each event, a contextually customized expression of [unlabeled] will come to life to inspire a two-way dialogue with attendees. So far, [unlabeled] has been present at Pride parades in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and World Pride in NYC, hosted a Girlboss Rally [unlabeled] mixer, and at the 25th anniversary of Essence Festival presented a panel discussion about labels in society. This month, the AAPD ADA Celebration on Capitol Hill and National Urban League’s annual conference where attendees will celebrate the labels they embrace. What are your hopes for this campaign? As we brought this idea to our various partners, we saw that the topic of labels was one that sparked a lively dialogue and led to a better understanding of other groups and communities. It’s our hope that [unlabeled] can scale these types of conversations to foster more understanding, compassion and, ultimately, help champion a society of greater acceptance. After Stonewall Reading List By Gregg Shapiro Stonewall 50 celebrations may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an abundance of good LGBTQ reading to be found to take you through the summer and into the fall. All titles are out now unless otherwise indicated. POETRY PAGES According to gay poet Aaron Smith In The Book of Daniel (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2019), he needs his Frank O’Hara and Denise Duhamel (among other poets), and he certainly gets them in this 47 poem collection that merges pop culture references and sensibility with his own personal and political struggles for an intoxicating concoction. [Oct. 2019] Curated by the poet and spoken-word artist herself, Crossfire: A Litany For Survival (Haymarket Books, 2019) by Staceyann Chin is the first full-length collection by the «out poet and political activist», featuring more than 50 of Chinn›s pieces, as well as foreword by Jacqueline Woodson, and advance praise from Rosanne Cash and Eve Ensler. [Oct. 2019] The fourth book in gay poet Tommy Pico’s Teebs tetralogy, Feed (Tin House Books, 2019) is an appetizing love letter addressed to the “dear reader” (who is “easy to love but hard to get close to”) that employs heart and humor and hunger to spell out its messages involving sex, travel, politics and the dangers of life in this part of the century. [Nov. 2019] The 43 poems in Aviva-No (Alice James Books, 2019) by Israeli writer Shimon Adaf (translated from Hebrew by Yael Segalovitz) mirror the age that Adaf’s sister Aviva was when she died at 43, and are a potent reflection of grief and loss, incorporating “biblical, Talmudic, and Rabbinic intertextualities.” [Nov. 2019] SCREEN AND STAGE PAGES Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Milk, turns his pen to his mother and himself in his memoir Mama’s Boy: A Story from Our America (Knopf, 2019) in which he writes about his conservative religious upbringing (Mormon) and his relationship with his mother, and how she came around to acceptance after meeting his friends. Distasterama!: Adventures in the Queer Underground 1977-1997 (Three Rooms Press, 2019) is writer/musician/exotic dancer Alvin Orloff’s memoir of life amongst San Francisco’s queer alternative scene during the zenith of the AIDS crisis, following his odyssey from the city’s suburbs to the post-Stonewall into the “lavender twilit shadow world of the gay ghetto” and beyond. [Oct. 2019] Legendary music journalist and NYU professor Vivien Goldman returns with Revenge of the She-Punks: A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot (University of Texas Press, 2019), which opens with the author’s “Womanifesto” and continues with interviews, as well as historical and personal perspective. Goldman includes a wide swath of queer acts including Le Tigre, Tribe 8, SleaterKinney and Girl In a Coma, to mention a few. Featuring essays by queer artists such as Joan Jett, Allison Wolfe and Tara Jane O’Neil, among others, Frame of Mind: Punk Photos and Essays from Washington, DC, and Beyond, 1997-2017 (Akashic Books, 2019) is a cool coffee table book by Antonia Tricarico, containing pics of The Gossip, The Julie Ruin and many others. 10 | 07.24.19

Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the beloved `90s NBC sitcom Friends, Saul Austerlitz’s Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era (Dutton) is the ultimate peek behind the scenes into the creation and execution of the series that broke new ground with its inclusion of a lesbian wedding and other LGBTQ-related storylines. [Sept. 2019] Almost biblical in scope, Jeanine Basinger’s encyclopedic The Movie Musical (Knopf, 2019) has the benefit of being written by someone who “was raised on musicals” and loves them. Basinger describes the book as her “effort” to relate the story of the genre “from then to now”, from “the arrival of sound” to the most recent version of “A Star Is Born”. [Nov. 2019] Speaking of bibles and movies, in Latter-day Screens: Gender, Sexuality, and Mediated Mormonism (Duke University Press, 2019) by Brenda R. Weber takes a look at the pervasiveness of Mormons and Mormonism in “American popular media”, including Sister Wives, Big Love and the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, as well as gay filmmaker C. Jay Cox’s under appreciated feature-length debut Latter Days (co-starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt). [Sept. 2019] PAGES FOR ALL AGES In To Night Owl From Dogfish (Dial/Dutton, 2019), Meg Wolitzer (who created an unforgettable gay character in her 2013 novel The Interestings) teams up with Holly Goldberg Sloan for a Y/A novel told via emails and letters, a correspondence between Avery and Bett, daughters of gay dads who have fallen in love with each other. Based on a series of Facebook posts that originated in 2013, St Sukie’s Strange Garden of Woodland Creatures (Rattling Good Yarns Press, 2019) by St Sukie de la Croix, with drawings by Roy Alton Wald, compiles and expands on the original text with delirious results, enhanced by Wood’s artwork. If you, or any of the little ones in your life, somehow managed to miss the Stonewall 50 commemorations, you can read all about it in the official Who HQ book What Was Stonewall? (Penguin Workshop, 2019) by Nico Medina with illustrations by Jake Murray. Set in 1973, Ziggy, Stardust and Me (Putnam, 2019), the debut novel by gay actor/filmmaker/activist James Brandon, imagines what it was like to be the boy, in this case 16-year-old David Bowie-obsessed Jonathan, who changed the mind of his psychiatrist, Dr. Evelyn in the book, regarding homosexuality’s classification as a mental illness. Like A Love Story (Balzer + Bray, 2019), a “bighearted and sprawling epic” by Abdi Nazemian, is set in NYC in 1989, and follows three teenagers – Reza, Judy and Art – as they navigate a world in which being gay is tangled up with the specter of AIDS, and how love and friendship come into play on their journeys. The titular character of Zenobia July (Viking, 2019) by Y/A novelist (and New Hampshire’s first transgender state representative) Lisa Bunker is a transgender tech whiz coming out of her online shell, as well as finally living openly as a girl, who has a chance to confront an online troll. But at what personal cost? Part of the Ordinary People Change the World series, I am Billie Jean King (Dial Books for Young Readers, 2019) by Brad Meltzer with illustrations by Christopher Eliopoulos tells the true story of one of the world’s best tennis players (and LGBTQ activists), from childhood to championship. And King herself loves the book! 12 | 07.24.19

By Jeff Fuller Music has a way of triggering memory, telling the history of a certain time and place. It is said a person will become attached to the music they listened to in their high school or college years all their life. For me, this musical period extended a while longer, from the late 1990s to the mid 2000s, probably because I was a late bloomer (it took me a long time to come out of the closet). Most of the songs of that I loved were in the genre of electronica/dance (including house, trance, techno and chill-out), music you were more likely to hear in a gay nightclub or video bar than on the radio. Electronic dance music evolved from disco. Heavily associated with people of color and the LGBTQ community, disco found popularity for a few years in the 1970s, but then faced a swift backlash. While disco waned in the 1980s, it influenced the house music that emerged in Chicago, especially at The Warehouse with its resident DJ Frankie Knuckles. Techno was developed in Detroit in the mid-1980s. By the late 1980s, European bands and DJs, influenced by Chicago house and Detroit techno, began creating their own versions of this music, like acid house in the United Kingdom. European bands like La Bouche, Black Box, and Snap! produced energetic dance anthems featuring a black female vocalist. This music gained modest popularity in the United States In 1991, when CeCe Peniston’s “Finally” made #5 on the Billboard chart. However, these songs found a home being lip-synced to by drag queens or pumped on the dancefloors in gay clubs of the times. I first learned about electronica/dance music in the late 90s while I was in college. My best friends and I studied abroad in Europe where house-influenced dance music was taking over the nightclubs. My music collection included the Trainspotting soundtrack, Everything But the Girl, Planet Soul, Robert Miles, and various German and Dutch DJs. Compilation CDs were often a way of introducing yourself to different songs and artists. 32 | 07.24.19
While I was in law school in Knoxville, I listened to a college radio show called the VIP Room, which played dance music, including songs like Gigi D’Agostino’s “L’Amour Toujours,” Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger” and Fragma’s “Toca’s Miracle.” One of my gay friends had Napster and downloaded some of these songs and burned them to a CD for me. I would then go to “Closet Night” at the Lord Lindsey Mansion and hear DJ Slink play some of these tracks. Once I began frequenting gay bars and clubs in Nashville and Atlanta, I began enjoying circuit party remixes of popular songs by Peter Rauhofer, Thunderpuss, and Victor Calderone as well as songs by circuit divas like Amber, Ultra Nate and Deborah Cox. Electronic/dance music eventually became more less underground and more mainstream. At the same time, the LGBTQ community gained visibility, winning rights such as gay marriage and becoming more accepted by society. Even though, I am happy with where I am today, listening to the electronica/dance songs that I loved the past evokes special feelings and memories and connects me with my own personal history.

Drink up By Jeff Fuller
Don’t be a de-hydro this summer, drink to your health! Water will cleanse your summer soul. Staying hydrated is crucial for your health year-round, and especially during the hot summer months. To keep cool, our system releases sweat through the skin, which then evaporates and causes our bodies to cool down. This unique human adaptation of sweating allowed early man to chase down animals for long distances without overheating. This cooling system helped us to evolve but also comes with an important fluid requirement. Health experts have long recommended that we drink around 8 cups of water per day. That’s actually a pretty good rule to follow as it provides about 64 ounces of fluid. However, new guidelines have suggested that we may need even more water to maintain a healthy level of hydration. The Mayo Clinic suggests around 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) for men and 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for the average woman. Of course, these recommended amounts can increase or decrease with physical exercise and certain diseases. But as a general rule, most people need to consume at least 2 liters of water each day. Remember that we also derive some water from the foods we eat, such as fruits and vegetables and other types of beverages. Milk, juice, and even caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee are mostly water and can contribute around 20% to daily fluid intake. Unfortunately, most people are still living in a chronic state of dehydration. Studies have shown that up to 75% of Americans don’t get enough fluids each day. Our bodies are comprised of 55-75% water depending on age and body composition. The thing is, humans are very leaky! We lose fluids every day through perspiration, breathing, urination, and stool. On average we lose about 20-30oz per day from breathing and sweating — another 3-7oz from stool, and an additional 34-85oz from urine. You can see how easy it is to fall behind on water intake as we are constantly leaking fluids! That’s why dehydration is a major health concern for so many people, especially in the summertime. Symptoms of mild dehydration include dry mouth, increased thirst, tiredness, dry skin, and dizziness. Severe dehydration can quickly follow with further symptoms including decreased urine output, dark urine, headache, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, fever, poor skin elasticity, confusion, seizure, shock and eventually death. Because it affects so many things, staying hydrated is undoubtedly one of the most important things you can 34 | 07.24.19
do for your health. Water helps promote weight loss by decreasing hunger and stimulating the digestive system. Water also plays a crucial role in muscle performance as dehydration causes muscle cells to shrivel and become fatigued. Adequate water intake is also essential for joint lubrication and helps protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues throughout the body. Additionally, water maintains blood pressure, regulates body temperature, helps mineral and nutrient absorption, prevents kidney damage, boosts athletic performance, increases mental focus, helps concentration, and improves mood. And to top it off, water is the key to young- and healthy-looking skin! Dehydration increases the appearance of wrinkles and disrupts normal collagen production. And that reason alone should be enough to get you drinking more! When you’re getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. Dehydration causes urine concentration, color, and odor to increase. Try to drink about 6 ounces of water each hour throughout the day to maintain a healthy level of hydration. Water is absorbed better in small increments as opposed to guzzling down large amounts all at once. And if you drink alcohol, your water requirements will increase. For every alcoholic drink you have, your body can excrete (piss) up to four times as much liquid. That diuretic effect and the resulting dehydration are what causes those nasty hangovers. So, what have you got to lose? Try drinking more water and find out for yourself just how much better you feel. Look younger and have more energy, more focus, a better mood, a clearer head, and better health. What are you waiting for? Drink up!
HYDRATION TIPS 1. Drink water first thing in the morning. After sleeping, the body needs to rehydrate (especially after drinking alcohol). Drinking water first thing releases toxins, improves digestion, and reduces hangover. 2. Drink water with every snack and meal. 3. Eat more water-filled fruits and vegetables. 4. Carry a water bottle.

Him: I hear you like bad boys
Me: Yeah …
That moment when your younger coworker says: “I’ve never faxed before, what’s that?”
Him: Not bragging, but I usually go to bed at 9 and it is now 9:02 pm
Me: Is that even allowed? I don’t need a Sugar Daddy. A Taco Daddy on the other hand …
Him: I live life dangerously
Me: Marry me!

Do I regret it? Yes. Will I do it again? Probably.
I regularly pass people on the highway to see if they look as stupid as they drive
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19) You may have to do your research to get to the bottom of things today. Planning your strategy well will reap tremendous benefits. The facts are all there -- all you have to do is find them.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18) Proceed with caution with any business dealings today, and especially watch with whom you’re dealing. You two may not be on the same page. You’re only seeing the tip of that iceberg. By looking deeper, you can avert a disaster of titanic proportions.
LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22) Your willingness to act quickly will come in handy today as an unexpected shift in policy forces you to review a situation. Draw in your troops as you decide how to proceed. Insight, not impulsiveness, is in order.
VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22) Your desire to help serve others may prompt you to take community action today. Volunteer for an organization, participate in the AIDS Ride or stump for a political candidate you trust and respect. If you can’t find an organization that suits your needs, start your own.
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22) Despite your obvious social skills, you find that nerves are keeping you from approaching someone you’ve had your eye on. Don’t let anxiety knock you out of balance with too many details. Thinking too much could prevent you from doing anything at all.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) A difficult period with someone close has you wondering how well you really know him. Seeing another’s darker personality traits can be a challenge in any relationship, and it always leaves a taint. Seeing past another’s faults can have a healing effect, or push you into calling the whole thing off.
ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19) Minutiae weighs you down today as details keep you from moving forward. Look at it as a positive thing, and take your time. After a few rough patches, things should finally work out.
TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20) Emotional attachments may blossom today if you drop your stubborn defenses long enough to look at things deeper. Your courtship will advance to the next level if you make him feel attractive and at ease.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)
You may feel like you’re doing a cameo on General Hospital as friends line up to have you diagnose a cure for their latest dramas. It’s a service your therapist gets paid handsomely for, yet you’re never one to deny a friend. Your intuition borders on psychic, making your ability to uncover the truth a valuable tool.
Get organized today by taking care of all the little things you’ve been putting off. Things like paying bills, restocking the kitchen and running errands. Don’t make returning phone calls a priority, as recent misunderstandings make communicating with others a challenge today, especially with family.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)
A difficult situation may have you questioning your faith in a strong belief today. Opening yourself to new ideas and thoughts can sooth your spirit, and perhaps help you see old situations (and people) in a shiny new light.
Food can be therapeutic, so chase away the blues by getting busy in the kitchen. Preparing for a meal is a great time to get some thinking done, so feed your brain and your tummy. Better yet, invite Mr. Special over for a night of food and stimulating conversation. Who knows where it could lead?

fantasize a lot over my ex-boyfriend have recently started dating a guy, and I ISexstill even though I’m in a great new relationship. Iam really attracted and turned on by him, with my ex was mind-blowing, crazy, but there is this one thing that is beginning and the best I’ve ever had, but other than that we struggled to find things in common, which was ultimately the demise of the relationship. My current boyfriend and I have an incredible, deep connection, but the sex is far from as exciting as sex with my ex. I often find myself looking at pictures and getting myself off to the videos my ex and I made on my phone, and I feel bad. What do I do to break this cycle? Is sex with my current boyfriend just never going to be as good? Do I have to delete those videos and photos? Sincerely Ex-Not-So-Plain This
Dear Ex-Not-So-Plain This We can all meet that one person that we simply connect with on a deeper level. It can be emotional, imaginative, or physical, and it’s wonderful when that connection is more than on one level. That’s how you find a perfect partner! In your situation, because you don’t have the same physical chemistry with your current boyfriend as you did with your ex, you kind of default to what you had with your ex. We can all revisit photos and videos of exes – especially because we have them right in our pocket on our phones now! – but what you are doing is directing more of your sexual energy somewhere else than your actual boyfriend. So make those videos and photos harder to access. You probably won’t delete them just now, but then put them on your computer instead of your phone, so they’ll be more challenging to watch. In time, hopefully, the allure of that past will fade, and because you are directing more of your sexual energy into your current relationship, you will likely experience a deepened physical connection with your boyfriend – not your ex! 52 | 07.24.19
to become off-putting to me: When we have sex, he makes these noises that sound like a whimper and increase to what to me sounds like painful animal cries. I am not aware if he notices or if he doesn’t hear that it sounds like someone hurting a puppy, but I really don’t like it. Do I tell him, and can I ask him to adjust the noise level when we are having sex? Sincerely Whimpy Kid Dear Whimpy Kid It is totally okay for you to talk to him about this, and over time, he can probably learn to be quieter or make different noises when he gets turned on and gets it going. He is perhaps not aware of the fact that he is making the noises, so a little conditioning will work wonders. Also, have you ever heard of Sade? Point being that music is a great way to mask some of the sounds we make in the bedroom, so consider blasting a few sexy tunes – I’m sure there’s a playlist for that somewhere – just keep it low enough so you can still hear each other speak and won’t keep the neighbors up either.
