In a PRIDE League of Their Own By Mikkel Hyldebrandt
Since 2006, GO Kickball and PRIDE Kickball has provided ATLiens with a fun and engaging environment for adults to stay active and connect with others. Peach talked to Katie O’Brien and Lindsey Kassen about how this sport brings LGBTQ+ people and their allies together. Tell us a little about the background of the Pride League. Through our vision & purpose, we knew we wanted to continue sharing our common cause to Live Life Fun™ to impact communities positively, and in 2014, PRIDE Kickball came to fruition. As an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, we were thrilled to launch this league for LGBTQ+ Atliens and allies. Everyone should be valued for who they are and know we’re in this together no matter who they love. This league offers a nonintimidating and non-judgmental environment with like-minded individuals who nurture and support one another. The league has grown a lot in the past few years – to what do you attribute the positive development? One of the key components to our success and growth through the years is a high quality of service and organization. As with any product, people have (or should have) high expectations, and we work very hard to exceed those. Our players know they can count on us for good operations, communications, listening to their needs/wants, and a great experience at our partnered league bar, Blake’s On The Park. We take pride in offering a top-notch product to our customers, and we feel fortunate to be able to serve them. They make us want to be better and do more for them season after season. Additionally, the many connections that are made through PRIDE Kickball and GO Kickball Atlanta are high on the list for the growth we’ve seen. Making these long-lasting connections nowadays is HARD. In a world of ever-changing technology, and the need for instant gratification, simply meeting others face-to-face and getting to know them organically seems archaic. Can you join a team or league if you are totally new to the sport? Of course! The great aspect of kickball is, as we like to say, even if you have two left feet, you can play kickball. The rules of kickball are similar to the rules of baseball. Anyone of any skill level can play. 10 | 08.07.19
What sets kickball apart from other team sports? When comparing kickball with other mainstream team sports (softball, soccer, football, etc.), kickball isn’t one that you needed to learn or play growing up to be able to understand it, play it, or to have fun with it as an adult. It’s still a little bit competitive, but not many take it too seriously. It is something that is appealing to people of all skill levels and ages. You can be awful at it and still have a blast! How do you get involved in the Pride League in the upcoming fall season? Registration for PRIDE Kickball Atlanta is at PrideKickball.com. PRIDE Kickball Atlanta is played Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons. Fall registration is currently open, and it closes Monday, August 26 at 6 pm. For Fall, games play Mondays from 6pm-7pm at Piedmont Park and begin September 9, 2019. To sign up, there is an option to register as a team captain, team invitee (you’ll receive an invite code from your captain), small group, or solo (free agent). Small groups and free agents will be placed with another small group or team. Feel free to email us at Pride.Atlanta@gokickball. com should you have any questions or need assistance. What’s a good three you need to consider when playing kickball? First off, remember kickball is still a sport and physical activity. It’s important you are stretched and physically able to play. Second, it is social kickball, remember to have fun with it. We do theme weeks, social awards, and we encourage players to participate in all activities to get the full premier social experience. Lastly, make sure you and your team go to Blake’s On The Park after games each Monday. We have partnered with Blake’s since our inaugural season and their team is amazing and treats players like family. What’s a good resource to learn more about the Kickball Pride League in Atlanta? To learn more, please visit GoKickball.com or PrideKickball.com. If you have any questions, please reach out anytime at Pride.Atlanta@gokickball.com. We hope to see you on the fields soon!
Stage and Screen Summer of 2019 You have to admit that it’s more than a little strange to watch the third season of Netflix’s Stranger Things while the strangest thing of all is living in the White House. Plus, the evil Russians subplot frankly hits a bit close to home, if you know what I mean. Nevertheless, the 1980s-set series always has good period tunes and the various artists Stranger Things 3: Music from the Netflix Original Series (Netflix/Legacy) is proof. While it doesn’t have any of Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s marvelous Tangerine Dream-esque score, you will find `80s chestnuts by “Weird Al” Yankovic (“My Bologna”), Teena Marie (“Lovergirl”), Howard Jones (“Things Can Only Get Better”) and Wham! (“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”). Wham!’s George Michael isn’t the only queer Brit represented here. The song “Never Ending Story” (written by Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey), and covered by cast members Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Gabriella Pizzolo (Suzie), was originally performed by out singer Limahl. The Elton John biopic Rocketman opened in theaters less than a year after the Oscar-winning Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody. While both movies have things in common – the queerness of the lead characters, the UK and period settings, as well as sharing director Dexter Fletcher – there are also considerable differences. First, actor Taron Egerton who plays Elton John in Rocketman does his own singing. Also, Rocketman takes unexpected liberties in its storytelling approach. While it includes straightforward concert-style musical performances, it also features musical numbers out of the Hollywood movie musical handbook. You’ll find all of it on Rocketman: Music From the Motion Picture (Virgin/Interscope). Additionally, the soundtrack contains the new song “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”, a duet performed by Elton John and Taron Egerton. Like it or not, the jukebox musical is here to stay. Far from a new (or inventive) concept (see 1977’s Beatlemania), the proliferation of jukebox musicals in the 21st century is probably cause for concern, especially for anyone who love musical theater. Imitations of music legend Cher are also nothing new. Drag queens have been impersonating Cher for eons; some lip synching, some singing in their own voices. With a book by gay playwright Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), as well as costumes by gay fashion designer Bob Mackie (who received a Tony for his work), The Cher Show: Original Broadway Cast Recording(Warner Brothers) features three actresses, each taking turns recreating Cher’s distinctive voice. The actresses portray various stages of Cher’s lengthy career; Micaela Diamond represents the “Babe” portion, Teal Wicks plays her in the “Lady” segment and Stephanie J. Block is the “Star”. An additional camp element comes from Tony-nominated stage actress Emily Skinner in the dual roles of Cher’s mother Georgia Holt and TV legend Lucille Ball.

B Best
an interview with Fred Schneider of the B-52s By Gregg Shapiro
What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the words, “Tin roof, rusted!”? If you answered “Love Shack” by the B-52s then pat yourself on the back. That 1989 single, the biggest hit of the B-52’s career, finally earned the group the widespread mainstream attention it justly deserved. It was also considered a comeback for the band from Athens, GA, following the devastating loss of co-founding member Ricky Wilson. Those in the know who had been following the B-52s since the band’s self-titled 1979 debut album (featuring the single “Rock Lobster”) were free to gloat as their friends and family caught on to what they knew all along – the B-52s were superstars. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Cosmic Thing (Rhino/ Reprise), the album on which “Love Shack” appeared, an expanded edition has been released, featuring five bonus B-sides and remixes as well as a second 1989 live disc. Fred Schneider, the B-52s lead male vocalist, was kind enough to answer a few questions before the band embarked on a multi-city concert tour. 18 | 08.07.19
Fred, in addition to Nile Rodgers and Don Was on Cosmic Thing, the B-52s have a long history of working with fascinating producers including Chris Blackwell, Rhett Davies and David Byrne, and yet the band never lost its distinctive personality, style and sound. How were you able to maintain that? Because we don’t try to be like anybody else. We all collaborate. We all have a lot of shared likes and dislikes. Everyone brings something unique to it. Keith’s (Strickland) an amazing musician. His music’s very inspiring. As was his and Ricky’s (Wilson). We just do our own thing. We don’t follow trends and we never have. I think that’s why we have such a diverse audience. Because you can’t really pinpoint a year and say, “Oh, this sounds so `80s or so `70s or `60s or `90s” or whatever. Unlike previous B-52s albums, where songs were credited to individual members, the songs on Cosmic Thing are credited to the band. Do you remember how the songwriting process worked for that particular album? Keith contacted Cindy (Wilson) and Cindy

was ready to work again. They contacted Kate (Pierson) and me and we were ready. Cindy and Keith had an apartment in Manhattan, and we worked in the basement. Then we moved to a studio in downtown Manhattan. But we would basically jam, as we did with all our other albums. We’d all sing at the same time and record and listen back. Sometimes we had an idea for a title or sometimes we didn’t. For that particular album, it was sort of nostalgic because a lot of the songs had to do with Athens (Georgia). That’s basically how we did. It’s the way we always worked; which was jamming and putting the pieces together.
the B-52s eponymous 1979 major-label debut. When you look back on that album all these years later, how do you feel about it? Thank God for “Rock Lobster”! Let me tell you [laughs]. It put us on the map. We found out that we had a lot of like-minded listeners. Or they thought it was so weird, they loved it. Or they got that it was a surreal trip under the ocean. It really got us going. It made us a huge hit in Australia [laughs], of all places. We were playing dumpy little clubs all around the country and then we go to Australia the next year and we’re treated like royalty. We were like, “What the heck? What do they expect [laughs]?” We definitely didn’t have a mega-show planned [laughs].
There is a very moving intro in the CD booklet written by T. Cole Rachel in which he talks about how meaningful it was to hear a band such as the B-52s when he was a young, queer kid who felt isolated in a rural town. In what ways would you say that you are aware of the band’s influence on LGBTQ listeners. We get letters. To this day, LGBTQ fans tell us how we helped them get through the horrors of high school. I was bullied in high school, so I was reticent at first to talk about it (being gay), I guess it was probably obvious that we were gay. Keith, Ricky and I didn’t have girlfriends [laughs]. We had friend who were women.
In 1984, you were the first one of the B-52s out of the gate to release a solo album. Why was it the right time to do that? I like funk music more than rock and roll. I wanted to do something a little funkier. I had a lot of ideas. Except for one song, I wrote everything myself. John Coté did the music. (The single) “Monster” turned out to be the big song on it. It was basically a joke. We were talking and I said, “I just came up with the stupidest idea”, sort of like when Ricky came up with the “stupidest riff” for “Rock Lobster”. I like ‘50s naughty versus dirty. People called the song “Monster In My Pants”, but it’s just called “Monster”. And it’s about a dinosaur that wears the same underwear that I do. I’ve also done three albums with the band Superions. I like doing my own thing. Kate and Cindy are doing their own things. We’re going to get together and do some songs for a deluxe package of all of our albums later this year.
Did you have any idea at the time that “Love Shack” was being written that it would become the hit that it was? I thought it was one of the most accessible things we had ever done. Radio didn’t get it at first, except for college and independent radio. I don’t think the record company got it. I have sort of a reputation for having a voice that is too weird for radio. I found that out [laughs]. Someone told me that. Even though there are a lot people who really like my voice. Basically, what Don (Was) did (with the song) was put two pieces together. I don’t know why we didn’t think of it. But I had to go around with (record label’s) A&R person that I had, while Kate and Cindy did soundcheck and basically beg [laughs] radio people to play it. Once they did, it started going to number one all across the country at different times. In addition to 2019 being the 30th anniversary of Cosmic Thing, it’s also the 40th anniversary of 20 | 08.07.19
Finally, many artists from outside the world of Broadway are finding success there, with Anaïs Mitchell and her Tony-winningHadestown being a recent example. Is there any chance that there may someday be a B-52s stage musical? Yes! As a matter of fact, we’re pitching ideas and coming up with things. Let’s just say there’s something in the works. -The B-52s perform on Sept. 7 at Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park in Atlanta.

Fallen Peaches Here in the South people celebrate peaches in so many ways. We have the Peach Party, the Georgia Peach Festival, and even articles celebrating Peaches of the Week. But I always think about the peaches who don’t get that celebration. The ones who weren’t baked into a pie or turned into ice cream. I would like to give a shout out to all the peaches who fell off the tree before they ripened, and my all those metaphors I’m referring to the peaches who just can’t seem to catch the break in the stem they need. My good friend, and locally-sourced peach, Nectarina has been living as a single peach with a pit to raise. She never gets her spot in the limelight because she has no time for herself. To uplift her, I decided to take her on a beauty make-over. After a few hours of being watered by a hose, and getting her leaves massaged, we did a photo shoot and submitted it to a local food magazine. I am pleased to say that she landed the cover of the magazine! And a centerfold as well. Helping my fellow peaches is a gift I love to give whenever I can. I stopped by to visit a dear friend, Persica. She was recently mauled when a bug chewed away a good portion of her cheek. Embarrassed by her disfiguration, she has become a recluse, hiding behind other peaches on her branch. To mend this problem, I took her to a peach-specializing cosmetologist. After a few visits, he was able to rebuild her cheek using enzymes from peach donors. With her newly-found confidence, Persica has started dating again, and her future looks bright! I was told by Persica of a neighbor of hers, Salvadora, who was removed off the branch and has been rotting at the base of their tree. I got some coffee with Salvadora at a local cafe to get her story. She told me the horror of how the son of the family who lives by her tree, plucked her off the branch, and when he disliked her smell, threw her to the ground. She’s been pestered by ants and other animals for days now and just wants her life to change around. To help her situation, I took her to bakery nearby where the owners happily assisted with turning her into a tart. With a new outlook on life, and a sweeter smell, I returned her to the same tree. Within hours of being back, the son returned and ate her up! The last peach I helped recently dealt with a loss. Pesca Romano hails from south Italy and was recently scooped up by a chef who pitted her. The most-shocking twist was he only wanted her pit, leaving Pesca on the cutting room floor. She never knew what became of her pit, so I took it upon myself to search for the chef and get some answers. After I located him, I discovered he was trying to grow more peach trees and used her pit to spring up more peaches. Relieved at what the future her pit had in store, Pesca went about her days as a succulent cobbler.
In my life, I tend to celebrate the brighter things the world has. But every once in a while, it’s great to look at the leftovers and give them a second change. If you know of any fallen peaches, pick them up and make a smoothie or something. Yours in keeping it peachy,

Eat At Sal’s in Ptown By Kevin Assam
Michela is the quirky and resilient voice of Provincetown’s iconic Sal’s Place. When she isn’t chained to the line at Sal’s getting eggplant lasagna out to the crowds, she’s charting the course to secure another generation of family restaurateurs. Hopefully as a full time stay at home aunt. She opens up about how a space suit played a role in purchasing the eatery, the momentous Eat At Sal’s campaign, and for good measure chef Barbara Lynch. Who the hell is Sal and what was his relationship with the bears of queer society? Sal is the ultimate big beautiful bear. We’re the third family to continue his legacy but he is still kicking. He’s currently painting, making wine in the east end, and hosting elaborate dinner parties. He turns 91 this year. How did your family go about obtaining Sal’s? Are you from a European cosmetics dynasty? [Laughs] My sister’s godfather worked at Sal’s for years and called my mum and said the previous owner really wanted it to stay a restaurant and might give us a better price. I was at an American heroes party up the street dressed as Astronaut Sally Ride. My mother sent me to take pictures immediately. She didn’t care that it was high tide. I was waist high, dressed in a full flight suit, taking pictures of the pier. The next day she and my sisters came down and the sale was agreed with a handshake. I’ll probably be paying it off for the rest of my life. Whenever I trick someone into marriage, my grandchildren will probably be paying the legal bills, but it’s worth it whenever I look out at the water. What’s the leftover index of the typical dish at Sal’s? How does it hold up when eaten at least a day later? Well, like pizza, I think the eggplant lasagna is even better the next day. It’s what I usually pack for fishing in the mornings. Our portions are generous. You’ll usually have enough protein to throw on a salad the next day. The bolognese is a great beach pasta as well. You couldn’t visit Provincetown or run an online search last year without encountering the sweeping Eat At Sal’s campaign. What happened and is it still ongoing? We have recent transplant neighbors who bought property next to a restaurant but didn’t want to live next to a restaurant. They’ve done their best over the past four years to drive us out of business with endless lawsuits and harassing our guests. The town shut us down for a couple of days for 34 | 08.07.19
rebuilding a deck that the neighbors’ contractor ripped out while renovating their property. The town rallied behind us in this beautiful organic way. A band of bears who rent another neighbor’s house put up an Eat at Sal’s flag. Then the Squealing Pig put up a banner. By the week’s end, most restaurants and galleries had some sign. People were walking around in Eat at Sal’s t-shirts that Shalom’s sold to help our legal bills. Someone even rented an airplane banner. It was amazing and humbling. There’s a lot of competition in Provincetown because the season is short and weather can be volatile, so for other businesses to help us was mind blowing. It speaks to how people feel about the gentrification of meccas like Provincetown, New Orleans or New York, where queers, artists, misfits, and the people who made these places unique and desirable can no longer afford them. What happened to us was the catalyst. People are saying enough is enough. Are Ptown workers and business owners at risk of continually losing eligible romantic matches during season? To paraphrase John Waters, the only things people steal in Provincetown are your bike and your boyfriend, but you usually get both back at the end of the season albeit with a few more miles on them! Barbara Lynch acknowledged that fear of being on welfare was a big propeller of her success. What’s driving you? I see how hard my mother worked to get where she is while being an immigrant, single, and raising three girls often in the restaurants while working full time. I want to honor what she’s done while relieving some of the burden. When I was younger I took the restaurants for granted and didn’t appreciate the hard work behind them since my parents opened the first three restaurants when I was so young. I was not enamored and wanted to do anything except work in the restaurants. That changed when we opened Sal’s. It was the first time that I appreciated everything my mother overcame. Kevin is a middling writer but top-notch interviewer. His ideas on love and relationships are mostly fueled by his wild imagination. He often orders dessert first!

I am in the best mood I have been in in a while – and no, I did not even run over a small child!
Yesterday’s eyeliner could be today’s eyeshadow.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19) The current lineup can be helpful if you’re an entrepreneur or businessperson with ambition. Being practical and down to earth, it helps to make a plan before you get started. Your social life perks up to people with power and influence.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18) You’re in a phase when relationships are at an alltime high. Your social life may get busier and busier, which you might quite enjoy. However, career matters also get a boost as the wee progresses. Watch out for pit falls and all may be ok!
LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22) You’ll be a beacon of warmth and natural this week. Yet home and family matters may get you all stirred up. Stay away from bar friends that will lead you down a bad path. The New Moon in your sign on Saturday is perfect for making a fresh start.
VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22) You’re in a natural phase when exploring your fantasies, paying attention to your intuitive impulses about sex, and becoming acquainted with your deeper purpose is very much in the fore. You may want to take time out to reflect, meditate and maybe stretch before you tackle those fantasies.
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22) The “fun meter” is set on high, with a delightful focus on dating, socializing, and even romance. You’ll be in your element when organizing events, matchmaking, and generally bringing folks together.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21) The spotlight beckons this week to make you the star of the show. Now more than ever it’s time to prioritize your goals and focus on those that matter most. Along with this you’ll be motivated to overcome challenges and explore new pathways to greater happiness.
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) A feeling of vitality and radiance could give you a boost that not only enhances energy levels but also gives you that feel-good factor. Romantic opportunities coincide with intense exchanges, where control battles and a desire for power could unleash sexual desire.
ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19) This is a mixed week in because Uranus entered its retrograde phase, possibly bringing out the rebel in you. If financial matters have been rather slow to improve, progress can now be made. A strong determination to overcome challenges in this area will encourage you to put 100 percent into solving problems for good.
TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20) If you want to stay friends with someone, it’s best not to rock the boat. However, this week can be excellent for detailed work, planning, and organization. You can make great strides if you put your mind to it. Relationships could become a lot more passionate through the weekend.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20) This can be a great time to showcase your (ahem) abilities or advertise your “goods and services”. However, you could also make a lot of money promoting and selling other people’s “products”. So maybe you should try and be a pimp!
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)
New adventures open up for you as a focus on exploration coincides with a restless need to travel. You might also be motivated to study, perhaps to gain a certification, or try lecturing, teaching, or getting published.
Finances look set to improve with Jupiter now in your money sector. This is a time when the more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out. Or maybe the more you put out, the more your finances improve? Go talk to a Gemini.

guilty pleasure of mine is to sex-chat am a gay man with an active sex life, which A with guys in chatrooms. Recently, I was Iis great, but sometimes I experience really chatting with this guy who said he’d like to intense orgasms that give me kind of an out do a first-time-with-a-man scenario. So, we proceeded to get into this lovely and sexy chat that step by step took him through his (virtual) first time with a man. But afterward, he disclosed to me that he was 15 years old, and that he was also a virgin, and that he would be interested in meeting with me to perform the scenario in real life because he felt he could trust me. I immediately told him that it wasn’t a good idea and shut it down because I am decades his senior. So, now I’m just really worried about going back online and chatting with guys. Did I do something wrong? Or should I just be happy that this guy had a safe and enlightening experience with me? Sincerely At A Safe Distance Dear At A Safe Distance “I didn’t know he/she was underage” is like the oldest trick/excuse/cliché in the book! Based on this experience, you hopefully know now what needs to happen the next time you engage in cyber-sexual relations: you need to ask about their age! Especially if someone is suggesting an underage losingmy-virginity fantasy scenario like this one, a few alarm bells should definitely go off in your mind. So no, you shouldn’t ‘just’ be happy about this whole situation at all. In fact, you should be relieved that you shut it down relatively fast and that there aren’t any legal repercussions against you!
of body experience. That may sound great to some, but what happens is that I collapse on the verge of passing out, and I drool and sometimes even get what seems like a mini seizure. I am not particularly bothered by it, but several sex partners have expressed that they were frightened by my orgasmic state because I seemed to be in a blackout or unconscious state for a short time. I don’t want to scare my sex partners off, so is this potentially something I should worry about? Is this a risk to my health in any way? Sincerely Here Comes Creepy Dear Here Comes Creepy Even though orgasms can be very intense; what you are experiencing is not common. When men (and women) climax, many things go on in the body, and many of those occur in the brain. An orgasm is a neurochemical rush, and depending on how your brain is wired, it can result in some strange and uncommon post-orgasmic reactions. It does seem like your particular variant of orgasm produces neurochemical flooding of your system that could be close to having a seizure or a blackout, so to be on the safe side, you should talk to your doctor about it to establish that there isn’t some underlying medical condition. You say you’re not too bothered by it, but judging by several of your sex partners, maybe you should pay some attention to it. An earth-shattering, mindblowing orgasm is excellent – but not if it is unhealthy for you, right?
