Forget about finding any heroic gestures in modern politics, and don’t get too attached to an idol or role models, because a past tweet, soundbite, or social faux pas might strip them of their fame and privilege overnight. But don’t for one minute think that our heroes have gone away, but instead of looking for a fictional caped crusader in the sky, look around you and observe the people in our community who are making a difference here and now. In this issue, we recognize some of the individuals that, in each their own way, are changing our worlds and making our community a better place. They are the real community heroes. Our celebrity interview is with Adam Lambert, who also graces this issue’s cover. Chris Azzopardi spoke to the daring Glam-pop hero about reclaiming creative freedom, LGBTQ music evolution, and his full-circle Cher moment. That and so much more in this epic (as in gutsy) issue of Peach.

Condom Couture ATL is the inaugural fashion runway event that benefits Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates (PPSEA). Peach spoke to Co-Founder Cathleen Madrona about the fashionable fundraiser. Tell us a little bit about the background for Condom Couture ATL. The purpose of this event is to spark a dialogue on the importance of Planned Parenthood care in the community, to promote sex and body positivity, and ultimately, help protect the human right to access affordable health care. The event was founded to help protect the right to health care for all, regardless of backgrounds and gender identities. Co-founder Felicia Julien created the event, because Planned Parenthood was there for her when she could not afford health insurance after some severe health issues. Can you elaborate on the work planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates does? As the organizing advocacy, and electoral arm of Planned Parenthood Southeast, Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates (PPSEA) engages in electoral activities, including voter education and mobilization. We believe elected officials should support policies and programs that help women and their families make responsible choices about the prevention of unintended pregnancies and plan for healthy families. PPSEA works to educate and mobilize the public and elect lawmakers who support these policies. I’m happy to say that 100% of ticket sales and auction proceeds are donated to Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates. As we’ve consistently seen in the news, the Trump-Pence administration is doing everything in their power to take away affordable 10 | 11.06.19

reproductive health care access from those who need it most. In Georgia, Kemp is making sure that this happens locally. To me, Condom Couture ATL is an opportunity to creatively present condoms in an inclusive social event. It’s a fun, approachable way to keep the conversation going on the importance of Planned Parenthood’s judgment-free care in our community’s well-being. Can you share some of the details of the event? Condom Couture ATL is an inaugural fashion show benefiting Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates, which will take place at the Westside Cultural Arts Center on November 9th from 8-10 pm. See spectacular Masquerade-themed garments on the runway designed using over 1,000 colorful condoms by local creatives Sarah Lawrence, Mo’Dest Volgare, and more. The prophylactic fashion runway event will feature performances by RuPaul’s Drag Race season 2 contestant Nicole Paige Brooks, Creative Loafing’s Best Burlesque 2018, Royal Tee, comedian Annie Lockwood and more. Attendees will have the chance to purchase the extravagant, hand-constructed costumes via an auction that evening. All sponsorships, tickets, and auction sales benefit Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates. General Admission tickets will be available for $50. Sponsorships starting from $150 to $3,000 can also be made by individuals and companies, which include VIP perks such as open bar access during the pre-show designer meet and greet and cabaret seating on the higher tiers, brand recognition on digital channels, and more. By Mikkel Hyldebrandt It can be challenging to define what makes a hero, but a survey through our community will quickly prove that some individuals go above and beyond. Their actions and activism should in no way be overlooked, so here a few of those individuals that we recognize as heroes. Forget about slapping on a leotard and cape and flying off the rescue. The real heroes walk among us, and their work, actions, or personal story is impacting our community in a very tangible way. To put a spotlight on these everyday heroes, we spoke to a handful of those who serve as an inspiration and make an impact on our community. Here are our community heroes.

Chris Lugo

Chris Lugo serves as the Executive Director for the OUT Georgia Business Alliance (formerly AGLCC) that serves as the LGBTQ+ and allied chamber of commerce for the state of Georgia. How do you feel your work is making an impact on the LGBTQ+ community? Even though I am just a few months into my role as Executive Director here at OUT Georgia, I am incredibly honored to work each day with the passionate and talented humans who are behind our state’s LGBTQ+ and allied business community. OUT Georgia Business Alliance was most recently known as Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and there’s a 25-year history of our Board members and volunteers working tirelessly to highlight the power of the LGBTQ+ economy across metro Atlanta and beyond. Building on that work is givens me strength and guidance to collaborate with leaders and organizations to further underscore the impact of our community’s dollars. 12 | 11.06.19

Why do you think there is a need for an organization like OUT Georgia in our community right now? OUT Georgia knows that visibility matters, and that’s why we feel it’s more critical than ever to help LGBTQ+ businesses start and grow, so our larger community sees what queer business success and positive financial impact looks like. We take great pride knowing our membership has an influence on tomorrow’s business leaders and entrepreneurs, and that point is even more relevant today when it comes to lifting up our trans and gender non-conforming talent. Given the political climate across the US and here in Georgia, it’s also vital that we help leverage the voice of the business and corporate community to drive large-scale change. Whether it’s comprehensive nondiscrimination protections or full access to healthcare benefits for our trans workforce, the bottom line of diversity, equity, and inclusion is simply good for business. I’m proud to dedicate this phase of my career to fighting for a better tomorrow through the power of LGBTQ+ economics.

Gabrielle is the co-founder and CEO of Transformation Journeys Worldwide, an inclusion and training firm with a transgender focus. How do you feel your work is making an impact on the LGBTQ+ community? According to the 2015 US Trans Survey, over 25% of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people have lost a job due to bias, and more than 75% have experienced some form of workplace discrimination. These rates are even higher for TGNC people of color. At Transformation Journeys Worldwide, we work to change these disparaging statistics. We do this by helping leading edge organizations initiate courageous conversations about TGNC people, overcome their lack of knowledge about how to interact respectfully, and engage in best practices that fuel fully inclusive environments. In short, we offer win-win solutions for employers and their TGNC employees. Why do you think there is a need for the work you do in our community right now? According to a 2017 Harris Poll, 12% 14 | 11.06.19

of millennials currently identify as some form of trans or gender non-conforming. Meanwhile, it is estimated that just next year, millennials will make up as much as 50% of the workforce. This means organizations have to be intentional in attracting and retaining the best talent. These best talent applicants not only include TGNC millennials – but also their family members and friends who likewise want to work in trans-affirming spaces. This is why our cutting-edge transgender inclusion training and consulting is so critical right now - because more TGNC people are seeking affirming workplaces, and companies are competing to be employers of choice for all highly qualified candidates. Anything you’d like to add? My greatest joy is hearing stories of TGNC individuals being able to show up in the workplace as their authentic selves as a result of our clients taking what they have learned from us and creating an inclusive workplace culture for everyone.

LARRY SCOTT-WALKER (LEFT) PICTURED WITH DWAIN BRIDGES WHO SERVES AS THRIVE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Larry is the Executive Director and co-founder of Thrive SS, a support organization for people of color living with HIV. How do you feel your organization is making an impact on the LGBTQ+ community? My work impacts LGBTQ+ communities in many intersecting ways. As an agency, we provide holistic support for Black gay, bi, same-genderloving, and other men who have sex with men who are living with HIV. We have the largest network of Black SGL men in the country. As an out and proud advocate, I am always championing for the rights, inclusion, and safety of my trans and queer community members alike. Understanding that the root cause of the violence waged against us is patriarchy; it is my mission to use my voice and all at my disposal to dismantle and disrupt spaces that aren’t inclusive. At THRIVE, we understand that our work must endeavor to create equity for all marginalized people, or our goals will not be met. Why do you think there is a need for your specific activism in our community right now? Black and Brown queer and trans folks living with HIV are still dying, and many are dying

alone. My activism is timely not only because I am a Black gay man living with HIV, it’s needed because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assert that in his lifetime, 1 in 2 Black gay men will contract HIV. For our Trans sisters, the numbers are even worse. Due to obstacles like anti-Blackness, poverty, implicit bias, and stigma, my community and those I love dearly do not have what is needed for them to THRIVE. It is up to those of us who can stand and fight to do so; thus, I’m committed to this battle until my last breath. Anything you’d like to add? I would like for the readers to know and understand that the HIV epidemic is far from over. There is much needed to see us to the end of this epidemic successfully. Challenge systems of hate and oppression, as they act as an unnecessary barrier to health, healing, and justice. HIV medications are amazing, but there is no pill to rebuild will. It is going to take a community approach, not a biomedical one, to get us to zero new cases.

THANK YOU! THANKS FOR A GREAT 2019 ATL PRIDE! WE’LL SEE YOU IN 2020!

Ryan sits on the Human Rights Campaign Board of Governors, and he is a Development Officer at Emory University.

How do you feel your work is making an impact on the LGBTQ+ community?

I’ve volunteered with various LGBTQ+ focused organizations for the last decade, and it’s been wonderful to see the next generation of leaders stepping into positions of influence. The opportunity to be part of the next generation of change-makers is exciting, highlights the work still needing to be done, and also pulls the curtain back on topics that haven’t received the appropriate level of attention. One story that has resonated with me for many years is when I recruited a student from a local college to volunteer with which I was also volunteering. After this person heard Congressman John Lewis speak of his support for LGBTQ+ individuals, he was inspired to come out to his family. I hope the work I do creates more spaces for individuals to live authentically and courageously.

Why is there a need for your activism right now?

In just the last few days, I learned of legislation that will be introduced in the 2020 Georgia legislative session aimed at discriminating against transgender children and their families. Here is, yet again, another attempt by anti-LGBTQ elected officials to come for the most vulnerable members of our community. The activism of which I am a part is needed because the voices of our most vulnerable need to be lifted up and heard in order to promote pro-equality legislation at all levels. I also want those anti-LGBTQ elected officials to know that if you come for us, then we will come for your seat. Additionally, the activism I am a part of must also bring attention to the horrific violence 18 | 11.06.19

against transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, especially black transgender women. It is necessary to say and know the names of those who have been targets of violence and pressure elected officials to recognize and do something about this epidemic.

Anything you’d like to add? As we close out another decade of the LGBTQ+ moment, I want to call on younger individuals to challenge the status quo and question organizational leaders on what their vision is for the LGBTQ+ movement for the next 3-4 years. And then make sure to also hold those leaders and the organizations accountable to those visions. I also want to let individuals who have been involved with the moment for a considerable amount of time to think critically about when it is time to step aside and allow the next generation of leaders to shoulder the responsibilities. I also want to encourage those who silo themselves into working with LGBTQ+-focused organizations to recognize the exceptional work coalition groups are doing. One of my favorite organizations is Planned Parenthood Southeast, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood. When my mother first moved to Atlanta, one of the first places she sought out health services was a Planned Parenthood clinic in downtown Atlanta, and she remembers having to find the hidden entrance. While those entrances are less hidden, any organization which advocates on behalf of and supports LGBTQ+ individuals needs our support.

At this point, American Idol is a mere footnote in Adam Lambert’s undaunted, venturesome, decade-long career. It was 2009 when Lambert astonished gays and moms with his confident strut and those sky-high notes, ultimately giving him the runner-up spot during the reality show’s eighth season. Since then, the out San Diego native, now 37, has checked some pretty wild boxes. Making Cher cry? Check. Queen frontman? Check. With his latest album, Velvet: Side A, the glam pop-rocker is checking yet another box, one that’s especially important to him: the box that lets him call the creative shots.

Recently, Lambert phoned to talk about the classic, Queen-influenced sound of some of his best music yet, the progress made for LGBTQ artists, and his ongoing mission to root his career in “honesty and authenticity.” It must be such a great feeling to promote a project you were so invested in from the get-go. Because I was so involved and so in the driver’s seat on this one, the sense of gratification I get from talking about it and sharing it runs deeper than ever before. What are you giving yourself permission to do that you couldn’t do at the beginning of your career? I think it really all comes from knowing myself better. Knowing myself as an artist, knowing myself as a person, knowing what is keeping it real. And if something comes up that just doesn’t feel authentic, I’m just like, “No, I don’t want to do that.” Which is great. And obviously, having put the time in over the last 10 years into my career, I think I’ve earned more of that right. I’m doing what I want to do, period, the end. Everything about this project is me doing what I want to do. Creatively, I’m not having to compromise with anybody. So are the EDM days over then? For now. (Laughs.) That must feel refreshing. Yeah. I think I wanted to do something sonically that just felt like a different page for me, and also something that felt timeless, something that wouldn’t go out of date in three years. I just wanted to do something that felt classic. Has touring as the frontman of Queen influenced that desire? There’s definitely some parallels there, for sure. I think having been part of that lineup has definitely rubbed off on me and made me realize it’s not always about the next sound. That’s not always the way to have the strongest connection with an audience. It doesn’t always need to be something that’s the next wave. It can be something that works that people love. When you decided to make the move and jump from your former label Warner Bros. to Empire, an indie label, what was the breaking point? At what point in your career did you feel so limited that you just couldn’t stand it anymore? I don’t know if it was all that dramatic, to be honest with you. I love the way you put it. Very dramatic. (Laughs.) I don’t think there was a final straw or anything; there was no big drama. But I just got to the point where I was done with my last solo tour, and I was doing some touring with Queen and I reflected on all the work that I put into it. I was wondering if there was enough return on my investment: “Am I feeling a sense of personal gratitude and gratification here?” And I had to ask myself some hard questions. So a lot of the changes that I made were to protect and insulate my creativity a little bit more. I felt like as an artist I wasn’t reaching

my fullest potential, because a lot of the things that were being done were being done where the main motivating force was money or popularity or obvious things that pop music revolves around. I think I just had to get the balance right. Obviously it is a business and I’m still playing the game to a certain extent, but the balance was off. So that was the big, important realization I had. Who do you admire for putting artistic integrity before commercial success? There’s a list, for sure. But recently, I do think that Lady Gaga has been an amazing example of somebody who’s gone against what was obvious or expected of her and done what made her happy, and I think at the end of the day the thing that I had to come to the realization of is, “If I’m happy with it and it feels authentic to me, that will come across to the public.” In the past I may have been guilty of trying to please the outside before the inside, and trying to just do what was trendy or popular or what somebody else was doing as opposed to something that felt like it would make me happy, first and foremost. Was there a lot of pressure on you to conform? (Hesitates.) There was definitely some pressure put on artists in my position. But also, it’s me not being an idiot. I’m looking around, aware of how it works, and that is in many cases just how it works. You have a lot of people you’re trying to make comfortable, a lot of people you’re trying to make feel like they’re a part of something. And you have to make a lot of compromises in order to do that. You’ve said one of the reasons you decided on the name Velvet for the album is because The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man’s World, published in 2005, left a big impression on you during your formative gay years. How did you come across The Velvet Rage and what was one of the greatest lessons you learned from it? Just word-of-mouth. Somebody had mentioned it and then I read it, and it’s an eye-opener because it basically breaks down the general psychology of what being a gay man is, and most specifically what they identify as and how to grow up gay in a straight world. Obviously it’s a bit out of date now – we are in a time where gay is way more mainstream, and a lot of these things are kind of obvious – but I think at the time, when I read it, it wasn’t as discussed, it wasn’t common knowledge like it is now. But it kind of breaks down the sort of different gay tropes and patterns and behaviors, and it opened my eyes. Did it make you feel more comfortable with yourself? Yeah. And also more comfortable with my community. I think it made me understand all of us more. It was a personal realization, like, “Where do I fit into these patterns?” but also meeting people and realizing like, “Oh, I get it, that’s probably why they are this way – because of this.” And it made me more empathetic

toward others in the community, like my gay have YouTube, we have a zillion channels on TV. friends, people who I dated. It just made me There’s more available to people. Have you given any thought to what a Velvet tour might look like? Yes. I’m not ready to talk about it yet, but of course I’ve been thinking about it. It’s something that I’m planning on putting together, but it’s a ways off. One thing at a time. One of your Glamberts wanted to know if you would ever consider doing a show where your fans could decide the setlist? (Pauses.) Mmm. A whole show? No. (Laughs.) But I would definitely consider having some fan input on something in the show. Yeah, I think that’d be cool. Trust me, I’m on social media, I watch and look at what people are responding to and how people are reacting. On this project, a lot of this stuff was kind of for me. I wanted to make myself happy first and foremost on this project, but also, of course, I had my fans in mind when I wrote these songs. With “Superpower,” for example, I wanted to write something so everybody could feel a sense of confidence when they listen to it, everyone could get a sense of standing up for yourself and having that empowerment moment. That wasn’t just for me – that’s for everybody. For

“Stranger You Are,” I’ve seen so many fans write things about feeling like an outsider, feeling unsure about being different, and that was one of the things they felt was a common connection between us: the fact that I’m that way too and that I’ve walked through the world feeling that way as well. And “Stranger You Are” is all about that. It’s acknowledging, “Yeah, no shit, being different is not always the easiest road but that’s who we are and I’m gonna celebrate it.” To clarify: You do trust your fans? One-hundred percent. Just not enough to create your setlist? Well, it’s kind of like when you go to a restaurant and you let the chef pick the menu. Like, sit down. Let me give you a great meal. @ _hum13_ Humberto is originally from Mexico, and he grew up in Gainesville right here in Georgia. The UGA alum wears many hats, including being the board chair of Latin LinQ – a local nonprofit organization that advances LGBTQ equity for the Latinx LGBTQ community in metro Atlanta. His favorite hobby is traveling the world, but he also enjoys hiking, camping, cycling, and cuddling with his fur kids. He is also a self-labeled foodie and mac-n-cheese connoisseur, and he loves everything red, black, and gold.

From extreme heat, the weather has made an abrupt switch to Fall – and I am here for it! Although I’m all about warm weather, there’s something about getting a little bit more dressed and cozying up at the house – and all of these favorite things will help me do just that! Fall is basically my color scheme when it comes to my wardrobe. I get to really get into all the blues and greens – and this deep olive green T-shirt is so cute (literally). Probably This Cute Embroidered T-Shirt, $25

So, kombucha can be a little challenging for me tastewise, but luckily, I found this smoothie variant that is absolutely delicious while being gut-healthy too! Odwalla Smoobucha Citrus & Guava, $3

Me: I don’t pretend, I am always real!

Just because I said it’s over doesn’t mean we have to stop having sex – c’mon now, don’t be like this!

Why are you so busy doubting yourself while so many others are intimidated by your potential?

Him: For the most part, yeah

Me: What do you mean? I’m genuine!

Him: Just last night you pretended to be sober

Me: Touché…

ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19) It’s very possible that you will want to take a step back this week in order to take a closer look at your relationships. Your address book is full of names. Your phone rings off the hook. You receive tons of texts and emails every day. Yet isn’t it funny that you feel alone?

TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20) If you feel you’ve been looking to the past lately, it’s in order to liberate yourself from it. You may feel like revisiting your childhood or rekindling certain relationships with old friends. Looking backward isn’t the best way to move toward the future. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be!

SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)

You hide your emotional needs from others. You need to be able to trust someone in order to share your feelings. They have to guess at your deepest secrets. Today you could save a lot of time in your love life if you just tell your partner what you want out of your relationship.

Sometimes your relationships are like magnets. When you want to get close, the other person tries to get away from you. When you take a step back, he or she runs back into your life. Human nature is complex. Right now you’re probably taking a step back, although you haven’t given up completely.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21) This week you may want to change some of the moral and social values that get in the way of relationships. After surmounting these kinds of obstacles yourself, and watching others struggle with them, you’ve decided that it’s time to do away with them once and for all.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19) The people around you sometimes have a hard time understanding where you’re going. You’re living in an imaginary world that has little to do with reality. If you decide to stay home and lie around the house, you will have no problems. If you have to go to work, try to be as clear as possible with others.

CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22) You’re entering a period of doubt, especially about your love life. You like your relationships and feelings to be clear. You may think a lot about your relationships over the next few days. Are you sure you’ve chosen the right person? Are his or her feelings sincere? Could you live without this person?

LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22) For a month you may have had problems communicating with the people close to you. This is nothing to worry about, yet it might make you feel off balance. This is a great week to settle conflicts from the last month or make your feelings clear to other people.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)

You may have doubts over the next few days. Don’t make any important decisions about your future during this relatively unproductive period. If someone in your personal life asks you to make more of a commitment, you may be tempted to put on the brakes without really knowing why. Wait a while before answering this kind of question.

You have a tendency to live your life vicariously through your partner. This week you may come to the realization that this isn’t healthy for you. You may realize that you give more of yourself than you get back, draining you of energy. In fact, you’re almost completely out. Be selfish this week.

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) What are you afraid of, Pisces? Is it contact with other people? It’s as if an invisible rope were holding you back from getting close to people, or worse, pulling you back. What’s this about? You’re going through a period that’s closely linked to your past. Get rid of the skeletons in your closet!

44 | 11.06.19

LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22) You see new horizons. It’s possible that the changes you’ve been going through lately aren’t completely finished. You may even have a hard time keeping yourself from running away from it all. Use this week to think about what you want. Things aren’t completely clear.

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice.

I recently hooked up with a guy whom I happen to know is HIV-positive. I’m on PrEP, and we didn’t do anything that could be a potential risk, but in hindsight, I’m a little upset that he, at no point, disclosed that he was indeed HIV+! Isn’t it his responsibility to let me know of potential risks? I mean, isn’t that illegal too? Sincerely Guilty Pleasure Sincerely Guilty Pleasure Although Georgia law makes it a felony not to disclose your HIV status before sex, you should know that things are usually not as black and white as that. You say you’re on PrEP, which should indicate that you are a little better informed about the risks involved. First of all, you are very well protected from contracting HIV by being on the blue pill. Second, you didn’t perform high-risk sexual acts, which is primarily anal sex. And thirdly, he could have an undetectable viral load which on top of everything else mentioned here, would make it impossible for you to get HIV from him even if you weren’t on PrEP. You mention his responsibility, and yes, in a perfect world without HIV stigma and misinformation, he should have disclosed everything to you, but with that being said, let’s turn to your responsibility here. You already knew that he was HIV-positive, and you didn’t say anything either. Maybe he knew that you knew, and didn’t feel like he needed to tell you anything? Perhaps he knows you’re on PrEP? Hopefully, you realize now just how easily channels of communication get muddled, so I suggest you take on some responsibility as well in this situation. Be proactive, tell a potential sex partner that you’re on PrEP, and inquire about their status. Help lift the stigma and start making it easier for anyone to talk about their status.

I am dating this guy who is 12 years older than me, and he disclosed early on that because he takes anti-depressants, he also uses ED meds. I am totally fine with that, but what happens occasionally is that sometimes his lack of erection before the meds kick in gets him so frustrated that they end up doing nothing for him – and then he shuts down completely and refuses to talk about it. I’ve tried to explain to him that I don’t mind and that maybe we can try other stuff that takes focus away from his dick, but he is just sullen and angry with himself. Like I said, I don’t care whether he has to take ED meds or not, but I am starting to get worried about his resistance to talking to me about it and working together to get through this. What can I do? Sincerely Tough Pill to Swallow Dear Tough Pill to Swallow You don’t mention how long you have been dating, but maybe it is time you start evaluating the reasons why you are together with this guy? Is he otherwise emotionally present and warm, or do his pouty and quite honestly immature tantrums go beyond the bedroom? If the inability to communicate and even find common ground to solve relationship problems doesn’t just pertain to his dick problems, then you probably have more issues than those bedside frustrations. Maybe he needs to see a urologist, or perhaps he needs his ED meds adjusted. Still, it is vital that you get past this barrier of not talking about it and the fact that he refuses to experiment with other things that might take him out of his head and into his body. Tell him about your concerns and let him know that you need to see some change if you want this relationship to last. NEED ANSWERS? REACH OUT TO US, AND YOU WILL GET THEM! SEND YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS TO OUR EDITOR AT MIKKEL@PEACHATL.COM.
