welcome to pride

I

t’s the best time of year to be in Atlanta! A weekend when our city welcomes our LGBTQ brothers and sisters from all over the country to the biggest and best pride down south. As Atlanta residents, we get to play hosts but we also get to have that same opportunity to stand up and to show how fabulous our city really is. In the summer of 1969 in New York City, gay people, mostly drag queens, trans and people of color, stood up to abuse they were receiving from the local police. The “riots” started as a series of spontaneous demonstrations that were mostly violent. Nearly 50 years later, the LGBTQ community is still standing up to be heard and to be treated as equal citizens in our country. Prides today are a celebration of our diverse community, but still take on a political bent. As a former Atlanta Pride board member and entertainment chair, I saw firsthand the impact that Atlanta Pride can make on people’s lives who may not reside in the best cities and towns where it is difficult to live their authentic self. They come to Atlanta to have the opportunity to be who they are openly and celebrate with tens of thousands of other LGBT people for one wonderful weekend. Since 2009, Atlanta has had the unique opportunity to have our pride festival stand alone in the month of October. It’s no coincidence that the numbers of visitors have increased for our pride, it also helps that the weather is outstanding. I encourage you to take advantage

by of EVERYTHING this weekend has to offer. Friday night make sure you go play with the fish at the largest cocktail party in any aquarium in the US, at the Atlanta Pride Kickoff Party at the Georgia Aquarium! The belugas are definitely ready to party. Take in the many exhibits and socialize the night away. Pride has a huge marketplace in Piedmont Park Saturday and Sunday. With well over 200 great vendors from local non-profits, corporate partners, clothing and jewelry stores, and amazing food. Get ready to take away tons of giveaways. Take notice of who is there supporting pride. Make sure you support them with your gay dollars over the weekend a n d throughout the year. S u n d a y kicks off with the l a r g e s t parade the city hosts. There is something for everyone to see and experience with the 200 plus entries. Peachtree is lined with CONT people from all PG14

backgrounds and ages. Having been a participant for many years, the best part is when the parade turns down 10th Street. That’s when the parade sidelines can be 50 people deep. The excitement and the roar are tremendous. I was very fortunate to carry the rainbow flag several years ago and as we turned the corner, I broke into tears. I started to imagine my LGBTQ brothers and sisters who marched that same route in the 1970’s but had to wear paper bags over the faces so they could not be identified. It was so moving to receive all that love from the spectators. If you ever get a chance to be in the parade, do it! We are fortunate to have three stages packed full of entertainment on both days. Take note

how diverse our lineup is. There is something for everyone. We have local artists, as well as, nationally known acts. Sunday evening ends with the largest outside drag show – The Starlight Cabaret. As the former coordinator and emcee, I know firsthand that this event is the one not to miss. People of all ages, colors and backgrounds pack the park to see some of the best drag we have in Atlanta. I have had the opportunity to check out many prides in the US and Canada over the years. Hands down we show our hospitality better than anybody else. I would see volunteers year after year from cities outside of Atlanta who come here to give their time and energy to make our pride a success. I would ask them why they come back, and they would say Atlanta just has something special. People are just nicer here. They want to meet you, speak to you and make sure you can find what you need. We are lucky to be here in Atlanta. We get to open our arms and say welcome ya’ll. So whatever you do this weekend, take time for you. Meet someone new. Fly your rainbow flag high. When you go to Piedmont Park make sure you support pride by making a donation! Your presence and support at Pride makes a strong statement to the world, that we as a community are proud of who we are and that we will continue to fight for our rights as an LGBTQ individuals. We are Proud. We are LGBTQ. We are Atlantans.

PRIDE TO WATCH

YOU CAN FIND IDEAS FOR AMAZING OUTFITS, GET IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT, OR BRUSH UP ON YOUR LGBTQ HISTORY FROM THESE FABULOUS FLICKS THAT ARE SIMPLY BEAMING WITH PRIDE. By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Tom of Finland (2017)

This is the story of a decorated officer who returns post-WWII to Finland only to find that Helsinki is rampant with homophobic persecution. His refuge is his art where he portrays uninhibited, homoerotic scenarios with hyper-masculine men. (U.S. Release date, Oct 13, 2017)

Free Fall (2013)

This intense love story is about a police officer whose world with a devoted girlfriend and a baby on the way is profoundly shaken when he begins to develop feelings for his handsome co-worker (Max Riemelt from Sense8). The movie is as sexy as it is an outstanding and dramatic tale of coming out..

16 | 10.11.17

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

Two drag performers and a transgender woman are thrown into an unlikely mix as they travel to the middle of the Australian desert to perform their show at a hotel. Along the way, they encounter a fascinating and hilarious cast of character that challenges everyone on board the bus.

Transamerica (2005) A preoperative transgender woman (Felicity Huffman) takes an important journey to bail out her son from jail while posing as a Christian missionary. As the plot thickens, she needs to find a way to tell her son who she really is. The dramatic comedy is especially poignant in today’s political climate.

Milk (2008)

This biographical movie depicts the critical history about how the Castro in San Francisco became a gay mecca of the world, and how gay rights got on the political agenda back in the seventies. The story of how Harvey Milk transformed San Francisco and became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office is both important and relevant in today’s political climate.

Aimée & Jaguar (1999)

This is a true story of two women who fall in love with each other in Berlin during World War II. Even though they are politically opposed, and their situation in a war-ravaged city is dire, they find comfort in each other and embark on a tender, sensual, and intensely sexual journey together.

New Gay in Town: Tears Make It Official

By Brandon Lee

I

was apprehensive about even responding to him, since he had a faceless profile. His profile pic was just his thighs. They were super sexy, meaty, muscular thighs, but normally I ignore faceless profiles. Though he greeted me with a compliment in his first message, and I always respond to a compliment.

Zimbabwe and I met on my one month anniversary of moving to Atlanta. Zimbabwe hit me up on Jack’d.

makeup pics usually scare off most guys. I’m fem and proud. I want a man that appreciates my femininity and loves me for me. So it’s a good sign when a guy sees my unapologetic flamboyance on full display and pursues me.

of the week together. I was immediately smitten. We just connected and it felt so natural. We were already exchanging “I love you”s after the first week. We were definitely moving at rapid lesbian pace.

Zimbabwe came over. He was even sexier in person. He had an accent I couldn’t place. I thought it sounded Caribbean. He said he’s from Zimbabwe, but has lived in Atlanta since he was 9. Zimbabwe also has the Atlanta accent, where I can barely understand what he’s saying since Atlanta men tend to mumble.

Zimbabwe and I’s first fight came after a week together. We still hadn’t done anal. I was scared to. Zimbabwe is a total top. He likes freaky, kinky sex, and has a big, uncut, thick, African dick. I was intimidated. I have a tight hole, that barely opened for my ex in college that had a 3 inch pinky dick. I am not as anally experienced as Zimbabwe is used to, and I was scared that bad sex would ruin our seemingly perfect relationship.

Zimbabwe and I just talked, cuddled, and got to know each other for hours. We opened up about everything. Our pasts, dating histories, families, friends, goals, even our sexual Zimbabwe was incredibly encounters from the previous patient with me holding off My profile picture was one of night. on doing anal, though he’d my flamboyant club looks where tell me every day how he I was wearing makeup. My Zimbabwe and I spent most couldn’t wait to have sex 20 | 10.11.17

with me. We were cuddling, and I wanted alcohol. Which I hoped would help loosen me up, so that I’d be more ready to do anal. I thought Zimbabwe said “get a bottle” but turns out he was saying “get a bottom” to bring into the bedroom for a threesome. I’ve had a threesome and a foursome before, so it wouldn’t be my first time. I was just apprehensive of bringing others into the bedroom before Zimbabwe and I had even done a twosome.

the threesome was a good idea. Zimbabwe was taking a shower, so I started messaging guys online about a threesome. When Zimbabwe got out of the shower I showed him the guys I messaged. Zimbabwe became livid that I sent guys our picture together. Zimbabwe is DL, even though we’d done PDA together. Apparently one guy I messaged was a friend of Zimbabwe’s ex, and Zimbabwe was worried the guy would tell the ex. Zimbabwe starts yelling at me. I was very perplexed as to why Zimbabwe was worried about what his ex may think, when he’s with me.

I told Zimbabwe I didn’t want a threesome, so we nixed the idea. We went out to get alcohol, and I made some very strong margaritas. I hadn’t eaten in hours, and got drunk Things had been going so well very quickly. I started to think with Zimbabwe, and now he’s

yelling at me about a stupid threesome I didn’t even want. The tequila made me an emotional drunk. I broke down in tears and sobbed. Zimbabwe chases after me after I run into the bathroom. He starts to comfort me. I cried for like an hour. I think the main source of my tears was thinking about how I’d failed again in a relationship and having to tell my friends Zimbabwe was another failure. Though after my tears dried, Zimbabwe and I were good again. We decided to make things official. Zimbabwe became my first real boyfriend.

GOOD SPORT: AN INTERVIEW WITH F(L) AG FOOTBALL'S SETH GREENLEAF.

By Gregg Shapario

In 2017, it’s less uncommon than it used to be to hear about a professional male athlete coming out as gay. That doesn’t necessarily make the process any easier, especially in the notoriously homophobic world of pro sports. In fact, as of this writing, Ryan O’Callaghan, who played for the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, is trending on the internet with his story about being a gay football player who once considered suicide. With his documentary, F(l) ag Football, producer/director Seth Greenleaf hopes to shine a different kind of light on being gay and playing sports. Focusing on three teams – New York Warriors, LA Motion and Phoenix Hellraisers – competing to take part in the Gay Super Bowl tournament, F(l) ag Football features prominent figures in the world of gay sports, including Wade Davis (formerly of the Tennessee Titans) and sports authority Cyd Zeigler. The doc’s message of camaraderie, companionship, compassion and competition, intended for a wider audience than football fanatics, is one to which the LGBTQ community should be able to connect. I

recently spoke with Greenleaf about F(l)ag Football, which is now available for home video viewing and can be ordered at www.tlavideo.com/ tlagay/1923992/flag-footballgay-cinema-dvd.html. Gregg Shapiro: What was it about gay flag football that you thought would make it a good subject for a doc such asF(l)ag Football? SG: Everything about it. Great characters, unique stories. Forces to conquer outside and within, all held against the backdrop of a football tournament, which in and of itself is dramatic and exciting. It was a story that felt needed telling, and I knew it was going to be compelling, but it came together even better than I expected. GS: Before starting F(l)ag Football, had you seen other LGBTQ sports docs, such as Ronit Bezalel’s A Day on the Force? SG: No. I’ve really only gotten into watching documentaries after starting this one. But I’ve seen every football movie ever made [laughs]!

GS: How much did pro football player Michael Sam’s coming out in 2014 impact your decision to make F(l) ag Football? SG: I had started the film long before I knew of Michael Sam, but as we were finishing the editing right around when he was drafted, it seemed like the completion of the story. Or at least a new chapter. GS: What was involved in the process of finding teams willing to be featured in the doc? SG: I had played in the league for years and so I had a lot of friends who knew and trusted me. They vouched for me with the national board, and I think they also had a sense that this was a story that should be shared. I had to assure them that I wasn’t looking to exploit the league or create some kind of silly reality show, but I have a pretty good track record of work so that wasn’t too much of a block. Cyd Zeigler was

such a strong force in the creation of the league, and knowing me from New York, he was an advocate right from the start. Then, when Jared Garduno and I connected, he got it right away and as the tournament organizer, his support really helped the process go smoothly. I don’t know if I could have done it without Cyd and Jared. GS: One of the more interesting moments occurs when New York Warriors teammates “Tall” Paul and John talk about having been a couple, something that is obviously not an issue on a team in which the members identify as straight. SG: It’s one of the comments that often comes up when you speak with straight players about the possibility of a gay teammate – “Will they be attracted to me?” “Will they be looking at me in the locker room?” It’s childish, because obviously we all work in environments with opposite sexes and it’s not an issue, but I think showing John and Paul addresses it head on and says, it never affected their play on the field, so why should it be a problem for anyone. And to that idea that having a gay teammate means he’s going to love you and lust for you, and stare at you in the shower, ha! Get over yourself. One thing I know about football players, is that football always comes first.

GS: F(l)ag Football was screened at LGBTQ film fests. Was it also screened at straight film fests, and how was the film received at film fests in general? SG: It was an obvious choice for LGBTQ festivals, but it’s been to a few “straight” ones as well and it’s been popular at both. I think even within the gay community, this group of athletes is surprising, and then of course it’s downright shocking to the straight community who has never had to reconcile gay + athlete before, so the reaction is more celebratory on the one side, and more surprising on the other. GS: Now that the film is complete and debuting on DVD, was there a team – the Warriors, the Motion or the Hellraisers – that you found yourself rooting for more than the others while making the doc? SG: I think we were all rooting for the Hellraisers during the process because they’re such a likable group, and because they’re underdogs, but in getting to know all the players, it was hard not to fall in love with all of them. We cringed the first time they had to play one another because it feels like a family fighting and you don’t want anyone to lose. GS: What do you think you brought to the project as a straight filmmaker that might

be different from that of a gay filmmaker? SG: Because I couldn’t direct a gay film if I tried [laughs]. I think what you have here is a very genuine sports film about athletes who are also gay. I hope that quality allows it to crossover, because I do think it’s straight audiences that most need this film. GS: Even though you are primarily known as a producer of Broadway musicals, have you thought about directing another film, and if so, would it be another doc, or perhaps a comedy or drama? SG: My training is actually as a director, which I still do from time to time, but producing allows me to work on more projects at a time and my interests are so vast it’s a good fit for me, but directing is always an option, especially when I think I have a unique vision for something, or don’t think I can get anyone else to do it. I’ve enjoyed this, but I’ll have to be a lot richer, or really moved by a subject before I direct another documentary. They’re a big undertaking and it was not easy on my ADD [laughs]! That said, I’m really glad I got through it, and with the help of an amazing team, we’re all very proud of how the film came out and what it has to say.

MY PRIDE

BY: MIK HYLDEBRANDT

PRIDE IS FULL OF FANTASTIC EVENTS AND PARTIES, SO WE’VE ASKED A FEW PEOPLE FROM THE SCENE ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE UP TO DURING THE BUSY RAINBOW WEEKEND! Join the Dancefloor Revolution

DJ Neon the Glowgobear lights up the DJ booth and packs dancefloors across the Southeast with his upbeat music style!

MY PRIDE PLAN

I’ll kick off my Pride by DJ’ing at TEN Atlanta on Friday 13, and Saturday night I will spin at the Atlanta Eagle alongside DJ Pat Scott for their “Indivisible” party. On Sunday, I’m hoping for some great weather to hang out with my family and friends at Piedmont Park during the day, and I’ll finish my weekend at the Atlanta Pride Official Closing party at Opera where one of my favorite DJs, Tony Moran, will be spinning.

MY PRIDE LOVE

As a DJ, I have been so fortunate to meet an amazing cast of friends and chosen family. Atlanta Pride gives so many people the opportunity to visit, frolic, laugh, and celebrate all of our diversity in the city I am proud to call home.

MY PRIDE TIP

Our events get crowded, so remember to say excuse, please, and thank you – the latter especially goes for all the police security, and volunteers who are making sure Pride is safe and enjoyable. Oh, and remember that CASH is KING when it comes to busy nightlife events!

Passion for Pride

John Walker is one of the major forces behind the official Official Atlanta Pride Kickoff party at the Georgia Aquarium.

MY PRIDE PLAN

Since I am working the event, I will be at the Official Atlanta Pride Kickoff party at the Georgia Aquarium. I also try to make an appearance at every event across the city – Heretic, Jungle, Deep South, GA Boy - to show my support of our community. You will also find me at the festival and the parade.

MY PRIDE LOVE

I stumbled onto my first Pride by accident on the weekend I moved to Atlanta in 1998 with my husband. It was very emotional seeing everyone living their best lives. Since then, Pride has become my passion, and I love seeing the diversity of our community shine bright for three days of the year.

MY PRIDE TIP

Rest up the week of Pride as you will need the energy! Lighten up, and let others do what they want to do. Let your freak flag fly high. You do you!

CONT PAGE 52 50 | 10.11.17

MY PRIDE

CONTINUED

Appreciate the Fun

Jaye Lish lights up the stage at venues across the city and hosts the ‘offdragway’ The Other Show at Jungle Atlanta.

MY PRIDE PLAN

My Pride weekend will start at The Other Show on Friday night. With Jungle closing this November, we try to have as much fun as possible. Sunday I will watch the parade with friends before I perform again at the Starlight Cabaret.

MY PRIDE LOVE

So many people come to Atlanta from other cities and states. It gives us visibility and a chance to inspire someone to celebrate themselves in a way that they may not feel comfortable with or be allowed to in their day to day lives.

MY PRIDE TIP

Have fun and be respectful of the space you are sharing with gay/straight/bi/ queer/whatever people. Everyone is working hard and doing their best to give the weekend 110%, so give back that effort in appreciation.

Go Deeper

With 30+ years of DJ experience and an incredible energy, Vicki Powell is the uncrowned queen of the Atlanta queer underground music scene. She spearheads the amazing Deep South collective and hosts Sunday Service at Sister Louisa’s.

MY PRIDE PLAN

I’m throwing six parties in three days, so my Pride is busy! Friday night is Latin Discoteca at Mary’s, Saturday I’m presenting an all-female DJ lineup along with a female-only-presenting list of hosts at Deep South at the Music Room, plus a secret Deep South after-hours party. Sunday I’ll be DJ’ing at Henry’s Pride Parade Viewing Party, and later at Sunday Service at Church. I’ll end it all with a secret Sunday Service after-hours party.

MY PRIDE LOVE

I love being able to create visibility for under-represented music, artists, and clubgoers. I seek to create spaces that are not homophobic, transphobic or racist and which provide an alternative to the more official Pride lineup – I want all of Atlanta’s diversity to shine!

MY PRIDE TIP

Pride brings everyone out of the shadows so have an open mind to whomever you may encounter. Be respectful and accepting – and let your energy and love flow! Kindness is everything.

Afterhours Supporter

You have probably heard Robert Ansley spinning at both Midtown ‘gayborhood’ venues and underground events. He is a part of both Cardio ATL and Deep South - DJ collectives and music lover communities that are rooted in the underground music scene.

MY PRIDE PLAN

I’ll start my Pride at the Official Atlanta Pride Kickoff at the aquarium. Saturday, I want to show my support at the Trans March in Piedmont Park, an often overlooked part of our community that face very real struggles. Saturday night I’m excited to be at Deep South, and Sunday I’ll be carrying all day for the parade, the park, Tossed Salad and Vicki Powell’s Sunday Service at Church. Oh, and I may be playing some afterhours parties sprinkled across the weekend …

MY PRIDE LOVE

Atlanta Pride has always held a special place in my heart. Since our celebration isn’t until October, we don’t have to worry about “competing” with Pride festivals everywhere else. This means our weekend has become a destination for queer folks from all over, and it really does feel like a family reunion.

MY PRIDE TIP

You probably shouldn’t listen to some of my advice, but I recommend pacing yourself!! It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Oh, and make new friends!! All sorts of people come out for Pride so talk to that new cutie across the room. And then get their number...

52 | 10.11.17

Prepare Yourself!

Mike Woodside is a well-known figure in the Atlanta nightlife scene, and he is the man behind numerous events for his charity Ready4Hope.

MY PRIDE PLAN

I’ll be at the incredible Pride Kickoff at the aquarium and then go to the Heretic to where DJ Shane Stiel is spinning. Saturday I’ll be hosting the Kween on the Green gathering in Piedmont Park, and later it’s Xion after a short rest. Sunday I’ll be watching the parade from Zocalo’s and finish the weekend at the closing party at Opera.

MY PRIDE LOVE

I love getting to celebrate diversity and equality in our community and having fun with my partner, local friends, and out of town friends.

MY PRIDE TIP

Come prepared, leave the drama at home, and have a good time. Get tickets in advance, and dodge lines at Heretic, Jungle, and Xion - the aquarium party sells out every year, so don’t be that last-minute guy. If you are coming to the park, come prepared with everything you need like cash, gum, sunscreen, drinks, etc.

I LOVE THE NIGHT LIFE By Casey Deyton

So, one day, as I visited many of the gay bars that dot this amazing city, I found myself a little bit tipsy, more importantly in awe. In awe of the history, my community and also the diversity with-in our community. In that moment, it may have been a few moments, not the point. I was reminded that a gay bar is so much more than a cocktail and a show. Definitely more than mood lighting and stylish finishes. Sure, you can go to any bar in this city and get a cock and a tail, but it seems to me, at least, it’s the foundational elements of community, togetherness, and belonging that makes the gay bar and scene unique. The gay bar, our gay bars, have been and are the cornerstone of our community. They have served as a beacon hope both politically and culturally. They were our first steps, our first foray into gay life and still are for many questioning sexuality and acceptance. They are the safe places where we can come together and most importantly be ourselves and as trashy, clichÊ and/or free as we need to be that night, at that moment. A place that has become family to you and me when our own families turned their backs. A place 54 | 10.11.17

where we can go and be proud to be us. A place where most of us learned about gay culture, gay history and terms like tea, shade, mary, and gurl. A place free of judgment, ridicule and mockery. A place that stares diversity in the face, opens its arms to all sizes, shapes, colors and says, gurl, welcome home. As a community, a multicultural and very diverse community, we will stand strong together. This pride, when you’re drinking your drink, take a moment, look around and for at least one moment, or half a sip, be in awe of our gay bars, not the hot shirtless bartender, but beyond that and to the cornerstone and foundation of our wonderful family and community to all. Happy Pride and I hope you join me in being PROUD TO BE ME!

BAR ETIQUETTE By Casey Deyton

PRIDE HAS ARRIVED! CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY WILL MOST LIKELY INCLUDE A TRIP TO AT LEAST ONE OF ATLANTA’S FINE GAY WATERING HOLES. HERE’S SOME DO’S AND DON’TS TO HELP YOU SEAMLESSLY NAVIGATE A CROWDED BAR AND ENSURE YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS HAVE THE BEST TIME POSSIBLE.

BE READY ID READY. It doesn’t matter if you’re 62 or 30 looking like you’re 62 every bar you go to someone will ask to check your ID. Have it out and ready when you get to the door, and besides, it’s the law. Digging around in your hand bag, your pockets or your shoes (yes shoes) only slows down the entry process. If you do decide to use your shoes, might I suggest you choose one and keep it consistent. Sprawled out on the sidewalk in your sock feet shaking out your new sneakers is so not cute.

HAVE SOME CASH. If you’re going to bar that charges a cover be prepared. Stop by your ATM or go with a friend who always has a wad of cash in their pocket. This way you don’t have to wait in line a second time or pay those higher ATM fees. ORDER READY. When you approach the bar know what you want. If there’s four drinkers in your group, have everyone’s order before you wave down a bartender. A busy bartender will most certainly appreciate not having to make your order one drink at a time. (Side note: It’s Vodka Cranberry instead of Cranberry and Vodka, your bartender will appreciate you) MONEY READY. When you get your order have your money ready. After all, payment is the next step in the process. If there’s several people in your party try taking turns paying the tab. Swiping a separate card for each drink in busy bar can, at times, be a somewhat tedious and little frustrating .

ESPONSIBILITY YOUR DRINK, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. An unattended drink will most certainly get cleared. There are several bartenders and bar backs working diligently to keep the establishment as clean and tidy as possible. It’s also for your safety. No one wants to get roofied. If you do, then you’re probably at the wrong venue. MODERATION. Ok Mr./Ms. Hot mess, you’re not doing yourself, your friends or the bar staff any favors by being cross-eyed and drooling by 10 pm. Take it easy, you don’t have to prove or impress anyone with your partying skills. Even if you do manage to pick up the hot guy/girl you’ve been making eyes with, he/she will be holding your hair back in the parking lot. Pull it together, honey. Keep it Klassy.

STRAIGHT LADY FRIENDS. First of all, they/you are welcome and a great addition to pride festivities. However, bring a small handbag not a suitcase you’re going to the bar not the beach. Dodging enormous purses in packed bar during Pride is as frustrating as dodging strollers in Piedmont Park during Dogwood Festival. Also, if frequenting gay bars is not the norm, make sure everyone in your group knows where and what bar they are going to and most importantly what the scene is like. Not everybody likes surprises. BE NICE. Everyone is out to have a good time and is celebrating each other and our community. So, please remember “you is smart, you is kind and you is important,” so act like it. Cheers! Happy Pride!

Queen of Clubs BY MAX JIMENEZ

Tracy Young Celebrates 25 Years Spinning Clubland’s Slamming Beats

“I remember the first time I walked into a DJ booth like it was yesterday,” says Young, reflecting on her early days. “I was living in DC at the time and the DJ at HillHaven, a predominately black, lesbian club, called in sick. It was a Saturday night and the club’s owner called me in to spin. I was a nervous wreck! My heart was pounding out of my chest but as soon as that needle hit the record, I fell into my groove. It was like I had found my home.”

Tracy Young is celebrating her silver anniversary behind the turntables this month. In 25 years, the music weaver who has become known world-wide as “Madonna’s DJ,” has released seven albums and 48 #1 Billboard Club hits. Her latest single, “Peace, Love, & Music,” recently landed on Billboard’s top ten At the time Tracy first stepped into the dance chart. booth, a female DJ was unheard of. It was 58 | 10.11.17

equivalent to a woman playing football in the NFL. It simply did not happen. “It shouldn’t have mattered who was inside the booth, but somehow it did. I would get the strangest looks from people when they realized I wasn’t a man.”

ing several Hillary Clinton e v e n t s including C h e r ’ s fundraiser.

Young owes much of her success to powerful women in the industry who helped her along the way. Most notably, her friend Ingrid Casares who introduced her to Madonna in the mid-nineties. Young would go on to spin private events for the Material Girl: movie premieres, album release parties, even her wedding to Guy Ritchie. Madonna’s stamp of approval lead to more opportunities to work with celebrities and soon, Young was producing her own original music.

“I took a break from t o u r i n g because I wanted to focus more on my music productions a n d concentrate on my return to radio,” Young explains. She currently hosts a weekly iHeart radio show that airs Saturday nights at 9pm. “I had considered retiring from touring altogether, but something always pulled me back in the booth and on the road,” she laughs.

Of the hundreds of productions, she has released, Young says her favorite is Madonna’s “Music” because the track was one of her first to be commercially released as an official remix. The song’s message about the power of music also encapsulates her experience over the last twenty-five years. “Seriously, I think it says a lot to still be here.” Young recently returned to DJing after a twoyear hiatus, although, she admits it wasn’t much of one. During the so-called break, she headlined Mardi Gras in Australia as well as several major Pride Festivals in the USA. She DJ’ed Lance Bass’ wedding to Micheal Turchin and was very involved in the 2016 Presidential campaign, DJ-

Tracy Young is looking forward to celebrating her silver jubilee and is putting the finishing touches on a special 25th year anniversary compilation that she plans to release before year’s end. Tracy will spin her annual “Genesis” party in Miami on New Year’s Day. Tickets are available at http://tracyyoung.com.

Q-MUSIC: MORE TEA DANCE TUNES

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

OCTOBER IS COMING. TIME TO PULL TOGETHER AN AMAZING LIST OF NEW OPTIONS TO CREATE YOUR LGBT MONTH PLAYLIST. After pulling off a retirement stunt that would make Cher blush, LCD Soundsystem returns with the illusory American Dream(DFA/ Columbia). Although it’s not as immediately irresistible as 2007’s Sound of Silver or 2005’s eponymous debut disc, American Dream does manage to push almost all the buttons for which LCD Soundsystem has become famous and beloved. From the filtered clang and multitude of synths on opener “Oh Baby”, James Murphy makes it clear that he’s back and he means business. “Other Voices” is a suitably titled funky workout featuring other voices, including co-songwriter Nancy Whang. The Bowie-esque “Change Yr Mind” and “Tonite” sound good any time of day. Murphy also proves he can rock hard on “Call The Police” and “Emotional Haircut”.

that surprising to hear hipster diva Sharon Van Etten on the opening title track of Omnion (Big Beat/Atlantic). The real dance party begins shortly thereafter on “Controller”, and continues through “Rejoice”, “Wild Child”, “My Curse and Cure” and “Through Your Atmosphere”.

Twenty-first century gay dance music legends Hercules and Love Affair, led by Andy Butler, have a long history of collaborating with brilliant guest artists. Trans superstar Anoni (FKA Antony) could be heard on the first album, Consolidated’s Mark Pistel appeared on the second disc and 2014’s The Feast of the Broken Heart featured gay singer/ songwriter John Grant. Therefore, it’s not all

After seemingly arriving out of nowhere and burning up the charts with the “Pumped Up Kicks”, from its 2011 debut album Torches, Foster The People made the mistake of deviating from what made it popular in the first place on its slumping sophomore release Supermodel. Consider it a lesson learned, as FTP returns to its rhythmic roots on Sacred Hearts Club (Columbia). No, there’s no “Pumped Up Kicks” here, but “I Love My Friends”,

Aussie electro-pop band Cut Copy cuts and copies the tropical trend on “Standing In the Field”, the first track on its latest album Haiku From Zero (Astralwerks/Cutting). “Counting Down” offers a friendly embrace to eighties wave and “Black Rainbows” is a more colorful dance track than the title might suggest. All in all, Cut Copy doesn’t cut corners when it comes to providing listeners with reasons for dancing on tunes such as “Memories We Share”, “Airborne”, “Stars Last Me a Lifetime” and “Living Upside Down”.

“Loyal Like Sid & Nancy”, “SHC”, “Static Space Lover” and the dance rock of “Lotus Eater” will keep the people moving. A Deeper Understanding (Atlantic) by The War on Drugs opens with “Up All Night”, one of the most remarkable, yet subtle, dance tunes you’ll hear this year. If there’s any musical justice, you’ll be up all night, dancing to the song on repeat. The dance atmospherics don’t stop there. The War on Drugs declare war on sitting still on equally enticing songs such as “Holding On”, “In Chains” and “Nothing To Find”. Something else The War on Drugs does with aplomb is create longer that average songs, including “Clean Living”, “Strangest Things”, “You Don’t Have To Go” and “Thinking of a Place” (clocking in at 11:11), that never bore the listener. For more than 25 years, British trio Saint Etienne, with lead vocals by Sarah Cracknell, has been making some of the best dance music for your ears and feet, as well as marvelously updated `60s Britpop. That’s what makes Home Counties (Heavenly/PIAS) such an anomaly. The focus has shifted considerably away from the club to the living room. Eleven of the 16 musical tracks definitely lean towards Saint Etienne’s vintage style. However, the trio doesn’t entirely abandon its dance-floor inclinations on “Dive”, “Out of My Mind”, “Magpie Eyes” and “Heather”, as well as “Underneath The Apple Tree” which combines Saint Etienne’s specialties.

unleash it on consumers. Almost 10 years ago, Jacksonville, Florida’s Black Kids eagerly anticipated full-length debut album received a harsh, soul-crushing review from hipster music site Pitchfork, leading to some departures and side projects. The band returns with the ironically named Rookie. Doing what they did so well on that first album, Black Kids bring the 21st century version of an `80s dance party on the songs “Iffy” and “In A Song”. “V-Card” and the hilarious “Obligatory Drugs” are also vaguely `80s retro, but in the most enjoyable way. However, almost nothing will prepare you for the joyous dance track “Natural Born Kissers”, a song so clubby you can practically taste the lip gloss and smell the poppers. Proving once and for all that there’s more to Alaska than Sarah Palin and her clan, Portugal. The Man gets all the way down and all the way funky on Woodstock (Atlantic). Aptly titled opener, “Number One”, incorporates elements from Richie Havens’ “Freedom”, the “sometimes I feel like a motherless child” song the late singer/songwriter performed at, you guessed it, Woodstock. “Live In the Moment” has a bouncy beat and you’re sure to still feel “Feel It Still”, which dances us all the way from 1966 to 1986. Hips will also find “Mr. Lonely” and “Rich Friends” hard to resist.

It’s heartbreaking how wrong the vault-raiders got it on the posthumous Michael Jackson dance music compilation Scream (Legacy/Epic). Recycling material from some of Jackson’s most disastrous releases, including embarrassments such as Invincible (turns out he wasn’t, after all),Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix, and The Jacksons’ Victory (the misguided album the brothers made following Michael’s Thrillersuccess), the collection overlooks far better dance-oriented material in favor of weak selections such as “Ghosts”, “Threatened”, “Dangerous” and “Unbreakable”, in which he substituted hiccups and squeals for actual singing. The White Panda Mash-Up “Blood On The Dancefloor X Dangerous” is the opposite of a bonus track. The scariest thing about Scream is that someone thought it was a good idea to peachATL.com | 85

WHAT happened was . . .

Fashion Faux Pas My friend complains to me that he never gets any attention when we’re out. I think it’s because he’s a terrible dresser with no sense of style, and he tends to look unkempt because he rarely gets a haircut. I work in fashion, and I really want to give him a full makeover. Would it be rude to do a kind of fashion intervention? FashionRepper

Dear FashionRepper, Although you may be correct in your assumption that guys overlook him because of his attire, you need to step carefully with this. Instead of instigating a style intervention why not introduce him to steps that will make him feel comfortable along the way. For instance, offer to take him to your barber or hairdresser and let him experience how it feels to have a fresh and cool cut. Or go shopping together where you can let your expertise guide him to what may fit and look better. Remember, looks only get you through the front door and it’s who you are that makes you stay.

LOL = Lots of Lube My boyfriend thinks it’s hot just to use a bit of spit and then enter me – but it hurts for days after! How do I tell him I need some lubrication? Chafed

What Happened Was... Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and we’ll give you the answers served straight up and with a little ice.

Sexual Spirit While talking to my friend, I disclosed that I didn’t know the exact number of men I had slept with but that it was over 200. He got really upset and told me he now saw me in a completely different light, and that he thought it was way too many for my age. I’m 28, I have a healthy sexual appetite, and I never had an issue with having many sexual partners. Until now. Am I really a slut? Slut-shamed?

Dear Chafed Ouch! How very insensitive of your boyfriend to completely neglect your needs and even physically hurt you in the process. You can pre-lube yourself, but I think it’s better if you address the issue with your boyfriend and let him know that it is actually hurting you. He may think it’s hot to do a little spit-ngo, but if he respects you he’ll oblige. Otherwise, take your lube and slide out of there!

Dear Slut-shamed? The old convention of how many partners are appropriate is waning. Things like hookup sites and apps have made it increasingly easy to engage with numerous sexual partners. As long as you are safe and you are not hurting anyone, you should enjoy your sexual spirit and have as much amazing sex as possible! Now, onto your ‘friend’… He should be ashamed of himself for even insinuating that you are a slut and making you feel bad about yourself. Maybe he can take a lesson from you and learn to lose a few inhibitions and get some. Hopefully, that’ll make him loosen up a little, so he isn’t such a tight a**! 88 | 10.11.17

ARIES (Mar. 21 - Apr. 19)

LIBRA (Sep. 23 - Oct. 22)

Stay away from the social scene today, and get things done around the house. Cook, clean, take on little projects. Getting your house in order will bring you energy.

Don’t throw a hissy fit if things don’t go your way today. Temper tantrums are never pretty, and always leave a nasty aftertaste. Try to reframe what seems like an obstacle as an alternate adventure instead; you could learn something new or have more fun than you could have doing things your way.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 20)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21)

You’ll be single forever if you don’t take some risks. It all begins with a simple hello, so try that out today. You’ll get the hang of it after twenty or so rejections.

Go to a foreign restaurant and impress friends by ordering something daring today. There can’t be enough fish heads, chicken claws or tentacles in your dish, and you’ll pretend to love it. It’ll be a different story later when you’re chugging Alka-Seltzer.

GEMINI (May 21 - Jun. 20)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)

Now that they’ve finally sprung you from debtor’s prison, learn to put yourself on a budget today. Start by saving more and spending less, then find a sugar daddy who can easily afford the Prada lifestyle you’re so accustomed to.

CANCER (Jun. 21 - Jul. 22) Today’s a good one to tuck yourself away in your comfy shell. There’s nothing out in the mean, mean world you need, so make a cup of tea, turn on the TV and put on your jammies. Tonight, it’s just you and Vh1.

90 | 10.11.17

You’ll be all about relationships today. Too bad you’re not in one. That can be easily remedied, though. All you need is a new haircut, new wardrobe and a new personality, and you’ll be set!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)

Deal with the issues at hand today. Don’t start any new projects until you complete those you’re presently working on. Overstretching yourself may impress your honey, but only until you crash and burn from taking on too much.

LEO (Jul. 23 - Aug. 22)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18)

You’ve a desire to maintain good will at home and work, but you always wind up saying the wrong things. Feelings are hurt, and anger begins to simmer, so watch your words today. In fact, don’t speak at all, although people will get annoyed with the miming, too.

Today will be a non-thinking day as you react spontaneously to whatever comes your way. Go with the flow and let your heart rule your head. Pack the brain in the trunk; the heart’s doing the driving today.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sep. 22)

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20)

Don’t rely on your friends for support today, because they’re more concerned with their own problems. Work it out yourself, and charge them by the hour the next time they come looking for a shoulder to cry on.

Have some fun with romance today. Go out and flirt and fall in love with every guy you meet. The romance might not last, but oh, the fun you’ll have!
