Same-Sex Love Is Put To the Test BY WILLIAM COOKE

n Steven L. Coard’s new film, The Lady in the Locket, Qeescey Green (played by Shawn Singleton) is dumped by his male lover, Travis (played by Coard), on his 35th birthday. Distraught and fed up, Qeescey makes a birthday wish that he never falls in love again. Later that day, a mysterious box appears at his doorstep. Inside is

In “The Lady in the Locket”, a New Gay Comedy Film by Steven L. Coard a locket. Once Qeescey takes hold of the locket, he is transported into it where he meets Lareema, the Lady in the Locket (played by TS Madison), who gives Qeescey a test of love. “I drew inspiration from the Sarah Michelle Gellar film, Simply Irresistible,” reveals Steven L. Coard

from the Jersey City studios of Color of Love Production. “I wanted to create a similar film with an African American LGBTQIA cast.” Coard says many black gay men who are over 35 and still single, have become jaded at the idea and prospect of finding true

love. He points a critical finger at black gay men themselves, who, too often, are only attracted to the outside appearance of men and do not take the time to see past a person’s flaws. In the film, Qeescey Green’s flaw, according to Travis, is his job as a phone sex operator. Qeescey enjoys the job; has been at it for a long time, and especially loves working alongside his fun-loving best friend, Yadiris Ramirez (played by Magda Suriel). Travis, however, likens the job to prostitution and uses religion — an undeniably strong influence in the African American community — as his justification to end the relationship.

your so-called flaws,” he says. The Lady in the Locket was shot last month, over three days, in Jersey City, NJ. Coard chose Shawn Singleton, an actor he worked with previously on his film, Raye, for the lead role, because, “I love Shawn’s comedic timing and I needed someone who could play off TS Madison’s high energy.” Singleton is also one of Coard’s students at Color of Love Production Studios Acting School in Hoboken, NJ. For all of his films going forward, Coard aims to cast his students, whenever possible, so that they get experience working with big name talent like Madison.

founded by Steven L. Coard that specializes in creating stories about the LGBTQ community of color. The studio especially strives to focus on unique issues of relevance to the gay African American experience. Previous films include Raye, Heartbreaks and Soulmates and last fall’s critically acclaimed romantic comedy, Don’t Marry Griff.

“Of course it’s a cop out,” explains Coard. “Travis is like many gay black men who are closed-minded and afraid to commit to anyone who walks outside of what is considered ‘the norm.’”

Coard had originally cast another actor to play Travis, but when the actor couldn’t do it, he stepped into the role. “It’s a challenge for me to play these unlikable characters because I’m so likable in real life,” he laughs.

Steven L. Coard is also the founder of The Color of Love Production School for Film, Television, Theatre a place where LGBTQ talent of varying disciplines can work together in a supportive environment to create exciting visual projects. “It’s an exciting time for people of diversity to be working in film,” he says. “We are hard at work, making memorable ‘diverse’ characters like Qeescey and Lareema that have mainstream appeal.”

Coard’s message to viewers is to be unapologetically you and stop trying to be like everyone else. “Find that person that appreciates

KWANZA HALL BELIEVES IN THE DIVERSE IDENTITY OF ATLANTA

As the race tightens before the primaries in November, mayoral candidate Kwanza Hall releases his comprehensive plan to put Atlanta on the map – and he is convinced that the LGBTQ community is at the center of a new ATL identity.

W

ith 15 years of experience as an elected official to the city of Atlanta, mayoral candidate, Kwanza Hall, is known as a man who likes to get things done, and always has a comprehensive plan of action when proposing legislation to the city. His latest victory is the newly signed marijuana legislation in Georgia, which will help balance many racial disparities that have existed for years and have law enforcement focus on other types of crime instead of making arrests for minor possession. He has also proposed and passed legislation for a major criminal justice reform package, which among other things includes the Pre-Arrest Diversion program which redirects many offenders into social services instead of into jail. The latter also means added protections for

transgender people who often experience an unnecessary level of harassment when they’re arrested for petty crimes. And, of course, he was a leading player in getting the rainbow crosswalks installed permanently at the 10th and Piedmont intersection just in time for Pride last year. He has always participated in conversations around LGBTQ issues. In fact, he is convinced that his parents taught him not only to be a passionate civil servant but also to be on the right side of history when it comes to civil and human rights. “My leadership style is one of inclusion and seeking equity,” he explains, “and I think I inherited that from my parents who were both civil rights activists. My dad was the youngest member of Dr. King’s staff from 1963-1968.” So, to say that politics runs in his veins is an understatement, and as the only one elected to office with an openly gay chief of staff, he is also extremely well-versed when it comes to LGBTQ issues. The Business Side of Things Kwanza Hall is thoroughly convinced that Atlanta’s thriving LGBTQ community is a tremendous asset to the city and its people. He attributes neighborhood developments, leaps in school reform, and a flourishing business community in part to the city’s LGBTQ citizens – and furthermore, he thinks that the message of inclusion and diversity on all levels should be part of the city’s legacy.

So, at a mayoral forum sponsored by the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC), he hinted that he was going to do something “big for the LGBTQ business community related to the airport that would propel the city’s image to new heights.” He believes it’s a moment to revisit diversity and inclusion in the airport. In light of the recent corruption scandals, why not have that conversation as well. Kwanza Hall thought it prudent to roll out legislation that will be better at offering the contracting and bidding process to LGBTQ businesses. As Kwanza Hall observes, “opening up the bidding process to allow LGBTQ businesses to participate specifically makes so much sense to me. There is already a program for minority participation, but there’s no special callout for the LGBTQ community – so this is an opportune time to call for more diversity at the airport but also in the broader city”. To back this particular piece of legislation, and to demonstrate that as mayor he will ‘put the money where his mouth is,’ he is proposing a space at the airport dedicated to LGBTQ businesses. As a man who likes to get things done, he already has complete ren-

16 | 10.18.17

derings of the proposed area (see the full renderings at peachatl.com), a prospective business plan, a list of potential businesses, and, of course, a pretty solid concept of what such a space could entail: “This could be a Human Rights café that celebrates the diversity of the city, and a wonderful testament to the legacy this city holds. It is also us not just talking about it, but showing it – you actually see us being inclusive!” Architecturally he is open to letting it be anything potential LGBTQ vendors or contractors would like it to be. Whether it’s going to be a café, restaurant, gallery, retail space, or all of the above with Atlanta-specific products is entirely open to interpretation, as long as it would have a component of storytelling that would show and tell the city’s diversity and inclusion. The proposed space at the airport also holds a great deal of symbolic value to reflect Atlanta as the hub of the state’s LGBTQ community in the middle of the world’s busiest airport and most important travel hub in the American Southeast.

EXCLUSIVE Next Big Steps for the ATL The legislation for a renewed and LGBTQ-inclusive bidding process along with the space at the airport is being proposed as we speak. The process from idea to completion is to create a standard by seeing if other cities have similar legislation or contracting programs, and initiate a study on the concept of LGBTQ procurement standards and guidelines. Kwanza Hall is convinced that the concept of making the bidding process more accessible for LGBTQ businesses and the airport retail space will go far because of the way it could help shape the future of Atlanta. He firmly believes in opening from an inclusive position, and as he says, “Even though we haven’t figured out all perspectives, it’s about starting from a positive place and stay in that place.” The same attitude applies to the vision he has for future Atlanta should he be the one taking the mayor’s seat. “Obviously, I love the city. Who knows what we might be able to do? We’re not huge like Chicago and NYC, but we have all the same attributes and success platforms that they have,” he explains, “but we do struggle somewhat with our identity. We keep saying ‘we should be it’; but we just don’t know what that ‘it’ is yet!” He sees the next 4-8 years as genuinely formative – especially if Kwanza himself should be at the helm of the city – where Atlanta could indeed build a new perspective and identity for itself. Much like a tween going through all the phases towards adulthood, Atlanta is not quite there, and just like a closeted gay person, Kwanza believes Atlanta should come out on its own! “As mayor, it’s going to be wonderful to help people, because people matter most and I believe in people-focused, people-centered leadership because it will do the soul of Atlanta good,” he explains. The grand vision is to develop a city that can take care of all of its people and be better about loving its people, “It’s not about giveaways but about empowering everyone to participate and to benefit and grow together. That’s what this city needs to be about.” How will he build this vision of Atlanta? Well, apart from proposing comprehensive and well-researched legislation and getting things done instead of just talking about them, Kwanza returns to his roots to talk about doing well and simply having the need to help people: “I really did learn to become an honest public servant. My parents put that in me. I didn’t know growing up that that was what they were doing, but my dad always took us places to help people – and it’s hard to stray away from what has been given to you!” The non-partisan mayoral election for the city of Atlanta will take place on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Incumbent Mayor Kasim Reed is ineligible to run for re-election as he will have served two terms. If no candidate receives an absolute majority, a runoff will be held between the top two finishers on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. No matter who will claim the title as mayor of the city of Atlanta, Kwanza Hall describes best what the city needs: “Atlanta doesn’t need a white, black, gay, or straight mayor – Atlanta needs a great mayor.” Disclaimer of Endorsement: The views and opinions stated in this interview are solely for the reader’s convenience. PeachATL Media does not endorse a single candidate in the mayoral campaign or election. peachATL.com | 17

PACK THE PARK 2017. THE WALK & RUN AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run is the Southeast’s largest community fundraiser and awareness event for HIV/AIDS, benefiting AID Atlanta & 7 other Participating Organizations. Over its history, more than 300,000 people have participated in AWA5K, raising $40M for HIV/AIDS prevention and care, saving countless lives and improving the well-being of thousands still living with HIV/ AIDS today. This year, we expect thousands of people to join us. AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run continues until the epidemic ends.

AIDS WALK ATLANTA & 5K RUN. THE EPIDEMIC IN GA In 2013 (the last year for which statistics are available), Georgia was ranked fifth highest in the nation for total number of adults and adolescents living with HIV infection. Almost two thirds, (64%) of persons living with HIV infection in 2013 resided in the Metro Atlanta area. Sixty-seven percent of new diagnoses of HIV infection in Georgia were among African Americans.

AID Atlanta AID Atlanta produces AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run, and is a leader in HIV prevention, education, and outreach. Our 3-5% positivity rate exceeds the 1% national average, which means that we are consistently reaching those who are at highest risk. Providing services to people living with a diagnosis of HIV in GA, we reach thousands more with prevention and wellness services; those services include HIV counseling & testing; access to prevention tools (e.g. condoms, safer sex kits) medical referrals; pharmacy access; case management; housing and rental assistance; mental health counseling; and peer support. AID Atlanta provides targeted outreach to those most vulnerable to HIV infection: Black and Latina women, gay and bisexual men, transgender women, injection drug users, and young people. We advocate for public policies that support the fight against AIDS, and for public funding of treatment, prevention, and care.

If you can’t take the heat get out of my kitchen! The sign said, “NO pets!” Sorry Daddy your pup with have to stay in the car.

Just a “hole” lot of NO!

Leather, the new cotten? Wait that rubber. Nice! Pride should’t be the only time you walk around in your underwear.

If you and your ex are still sleeping together everyday is he still your ex? Asking for a friend.. Anxiety is living in the future. Depres-

Those aren’t quirks, darling. Those are my Super Powers!

ARIES (Mar. 21 - Apr. 19)

LIBRA (Sep. 23 - Oct. 22)

Socializing may be a good way to shed some of the stress you’ve been feeling lately. But keep yourself under control; you never know what might happen after you’ve had a few. You may have to call in sick tomorrow when you wake up in a strange bed in an even stranger part of town.

You’ll project positive energy today. Some guys will pick up on your sunny vibe, while others will retreat from you like vampires from the light. Trying to convert those people will be a waste of your time. You only have so much energy to throw around, so share the love only to those who appreciate it.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 20)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21)

Expect your well laid plans for the day to change overnight. The romantic drive with your partner could be in jeopardy as the two of you begin to fight like Krystle and Alexis. Hopefully things will calm down by this evening. You hate eating dinner alone.

Gambling with your feelings will be a losing proposition today. There will be guys who toy with them and treat them like dirt. So it’ll be best to keep them buried deep inside. They can’t be abused if you don’t show them, although you may soon find yourself a prisoner in your own shell.

GEMINI (May 21 - Jun. 20)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)

You may be thinking too much about finding the perfect relationship. Perhaps it’s time you realize that’s there’s no such thing. Perfection may be ideal but it’s the little flaws and quirks that make people interesting. So get out today and find yourself Mr. Slightly Imperfect, warts and all.

CANCER (Jun. 21 - Jul. 22)

50 | 10.18.17

The outcome of a stormy relationship will be up to you today. You could hang in there and face even more heartache and humiliation. Or you could grow a pair and walk out the door. You’re looking at a choice of being a prisoner or liberator. Sounds like a nobrainer, doesn’t it?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)

You’ll have to accomplish a lot today, but details will compromise your time. Try to get as much done as you can before noon, then give yourself time to relax and recharge.

You may have a thing for men in uniforms of authority, but don’t go too far with that. Speeding down the freeway in the hopes of being pulled over by a macho cop may give you a temporary turn-on. But the thousands in fines and possible jail time…say, maybe it will be worth it!

LEO (Jul. 23 - Aug. 22)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18)

You’ll appreciate the diversity of our unique culture today as you see that guys come in all races, body shapes and personalities. You’re not fussy, so you could be like a kid in a candy store at the neighborhood watering hole. You’ll have so many choices you won’t know where to start!

You may have been the one to initiate a romance, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be the one to end it. Holding the short end of the stick may leave you with pie on your face, especially when you swore that this one was forever. Look for the warning signs today. They’ll be painfully obvious.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sep. 22)

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20)

You may have trouble communicating with guys in social situations today. So it may be best to just listen. It could give the illusion that you’re thoughtful and introspective, not tongue-tied, stammering and prone to saying all the wrong things.

You may make a public spectacle of yourself today as you get caught up in a frivolous new romance. Making out in the middle of brunch with friends won’t seem so bad, but all eyes will be on you when the pants come down, and it becomes painfully obvious that you forgot to put on underwear.

Dear Chapero-nono First of all, good for you (and your friend) that you are making sure he is safe while he’s in his drunken stupor. Next up, is intervention time. You need to express your concern for him and his alcohol consumption. Let him know that you feel a responsibility for his actions while under the influence and that you would worry about what he would get into if you weren’t there. If he doesn’t listen to your genuine concerns which are rooted in fear of losing his friendship, he indeed has a problem. Check back with us, and let us know how it goes! I currently don’t have a car, so my roommate is really nice about giving me rides. But when we drive it is usually windows down and music blasting – and I hate the way it makes me look! How do I tell him to turn it down? Sincerely Low the No Rider

Dear Low to the No Rider

What Happened Was...

The answer is simple – you don’t! You’re in his car on his terms, and he’s even doing you a favor by taking you places. You could try engaging in conversation with him so he would have to turn the music, but whatever you do, don’t touch that dial. If you truly can’t deal with it, ask someone else or take a rideshare service.

Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and we’ll give you the answers served straight up and with a little ice. Soooo, I was at a routine check-up at my doctor, and apparently, I have gonorrhea… I’m receiving treatment, and I reached out to my last sexual partner. As it turns out he was about to go to the doctor because of a few symptoms himself. So, now that the likely culprit has been found – do I need to back-track to more sexual partners?

Dear STDammit! We’re all big boys here, and if you play, sometimes you pay. And of course, you are going to reach out to the sex partners who could be in the window of contamination! Don’t assume that you contracted it from your last sexual partner – he might as well have gotten it from you and is just displaying symptoms quicker. Don’t be that guy, and do the right thing. Gonorrhea is rampant in Atlanta right now, and if you keep quiet about this, you are part of the problem! My and my bestie hang out a lot, but lately, I’m dreading the weekends because if we go out to bars and clubs, he gets so wasted that my night is basically watching out for him and keeping him out of trouble. What do I do about it? Sincerely Chapero-nono

STAY TUNED FOR NEXT WEEK He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mikkel@PeachATL.com. Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.
