From the Editor Even though the winters in Atlanta are rarely snowpocalyotic, Sometimes it’s necessary to turn your gaze inwards and check up on your spiritual mind and body connection. Maybe you need to do some serious work on rekindling that connection or perhaps you simply need to create a better or more balanced environment for yourself. So, in this issue we guide you on how to make your home a spiritual oasis, and we have asked two of our lifestyle contributors, Joshua Neal and Jamie Kirk, to give us their recommendations on how to better connect to your inner self. With the Holiday season upon us, we let our Q Music column review a few ‘tinsel tunes’, and we give our recommendation for a great Holiday-themed show, The Santaland Diaries, playing right now at the Horizon Theatre

The Santaland Diaries Starring Topher Payne The Santaland Diaries has returned to the Horizon Theatre as a Atlanta Holiday tradition spanning almost two decades. This year is a little different since the role of the satirical, sarcastic elfCrumpet in David Sedaris’non-traditional and adult-only Christmas comedy will be played by columnist and playwright Topher Payne after Harold Payne hasdecided to hang up the green tights and pass on the elf hat and booties to a new leading actor. The alternative Holiday tale has over the years turned into a Christmassy classic serving up a dose of seasonal spirit doused in Scrooge-like cynicism delivered by the character Crumpet, who hilariously depicts his stint as a Macy’s Department Store elf. Topher Payne brings his own presence and wit to the character, which has grown into an alternative Christmas cult figure. About the part, Topher says: “Taking on the role of Crumpet in The Santaland Diaries is a bold, thrilling challenge I’m eager to face. I’ll be spicing up this iconic role by creating a new atmosphere while providing the same mischievous, ludicrous behavior that continuously brings new and loyal audiences out to see the show!” If you need a break from the holiday hustle and bustle, this crazy Christmassy comedy is the laughter-inducing remedy.

When: The Santaland Diaries will run November 17 – December 31 Where: Horizon Theatre, 1083 Austin Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30307 Tickets: horizontheatre.com or 404.584.7450

Can An Atheist and A God-Loving Gay Make It Work? BY Branden Lee

10 | 12.13.17

Living in Atlanta, you will find many gays that think of religion as poison and associate religion with bible thumpers who have made it their life mission to make gays’ lives as miserable as possible. There are also many gay men that grew up religious and have a love for God that no hateful so-called “Christianvalued” zealot can take away. It’s not uncommon for an atheist to meet a great guy, and then find out that man is religious. Can an atheist and a devout man make it work? Here are some tips.

1. Respect each other’s beliefs.

3. Support each other.

If one partner can accept the other doesn’t believe in god, and the other plans to be in church every Sunday, it’s still possible to not let religion tear your relationship apart. Don’t try to force your beliefs on your partner, even if some of their thoughts on religion are deeply oppositional to yours.

Even if you’re an extremely adamant atheist, you will not burst into flames by stepping foot in a church. Perhaps there’s a big event going on that’s important to your partner at church, and they want you to accompany them. Go with them and show your support. Just like how you would want your man to support you at an event that’s important to you (regardless of the venue) support them by accompanying them to church. Just make sure you make it clear it’s not going to be a regular habit.

2. Avoid the subject. Although it’s not good to ignore core issues you and your partner may have, there’s no point in constantly getting into arguments about evolution versus creation. You know how you feel, and your partner knows how they feel. Nobody wins when you’re fighting with the one you love over something you know neither party will change their minds about.

agree to send the kids to a religious school or a secular school, that’s a major issue too. It’s possible to find a middle ground and compromise for the greater good. But if a couple isn’t willing to compromise and put aside their thoughts on religion for the sake of the relationship, then there isn’t any hope. Branden Lee is a writer and actor now living in Atlanta. Follow Branden on Twitter and Instagram @Brandeness.

4. Compromise is key. The power of love is a magical thing. A Democrat can marry a Republican. A Muslim can fall in love with a Jew. An atheist and Christian can make it work. In all cases, there is the possibility that it won’t work out. If one person wants to get married in a church, and the other wants no religion at their wedding at all, that’s a significant issue. If a couple can’t

This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Connect to Me, Myself and I By Jamie Kirk One of the inventory items that people forget to consider when they begin to look for something or someone to believe in, is that the relationship has to start with themselves. We have to be connected with ourselves before we can even begin to think about being connected to something else for a higher level of grounded-ness or assurance. The first step in trying to get connected to something is to do the exercise of finding out exactly what two points you are trying to connect. For example, if you are trying to get connected to a “healthier” lifestyle, you have to connect the dots between a fitness plan and your diet. If you are trying to get connected to having a “healthier” relationship, you have to connect the dots between what IS working and what is NOT. I don’t think it is possible to just jump in feet first and start believing in something. When you jump in feet first into anything, without doing your due diligence; believing & connecting can quickly turn into worshiping & sacrificing. And anytime you enter something (or someone) too quickly, without verifiable data - you run the risk of resentment in our purest state. If you want know the end, look at the beginning. At the end of any diet, any marathon training, or any long bike ride event, there is a sense of relief. It’s not that the training or the event is over, it’s that you stayed committed to the task at hand. At its core, that is what

32 | 12.13.17

connectivity is all about. Being able to stay the course, way after your brain and sometimes your body said to give in or give up. Connectivity has to be about the diligence to the end-state and how you will benefit from being grounded in something you believe in. As we continually look for something to believe in, it is important that we start with the fundamental and easiest form of connectivity; the connection between our mind, body and soul. Keep in mind that we “think” we know how to get on the path of righteousness and how to be at peace, but we often forget to step back and assess if we even know the destination of which we seek. Our fitness goals, our health goals and our interpersonal goals need to be grounded in truth. In order to achieve a higher level of connectivity, we have to be honest about where we are currently and where we are attempting to end up. Spirituality, wholeness, oneness, consciousness, etc. are all fine and well, but they mean nothing if we are not being centered in the foundation of who we actually are. Once that piece is solved, we can quickly determine how to get to a level that satisfies the whole of our being on all levels. Cliff notes....Connect the dots or risk wandering and suffering.

Leave it to a nice Jewish (bisexual) girl such as Rachael Sage to come up with one of the most delightful holiday recordings of the year. Her five-song EP Joy! (MPress) opens with a reading of “Joy to the World” that is pure Sage, right down to her distinctive phrasing and vocals. A radio mix of the songs also closes the EP. In between, it’s a festival of lights and light pop. The originals, including the lighthearted “Tchatchkes & Latkes” and the beautiful “Hanukkah In The Village”, are among Sage’s most appealing compositions. The disc’s centerpiece, in which Sage sings in Yiddish, is the song “Umru Meine”, featuring lyrics by the modernist poet Moyshe-Leyb Halpern. The

of

Josh Groban’s Noel (Reprise), described as “one of the big-

gest-selling Christmas album of all time”, now boasts six additional songs, including four newly recorded selections. The original 2007 album by the classical crossover superstar played it relatively safe with a few exceptions. A duet with Brian McKnight on “Angels We Have Heard on High” soars. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is made more poignant because of the inclusion of holiday greetings from soldiers and their families. “Thankful”, co-written by Carole Bayer Sager, is the newest of the original disc’s compositions. Of the newly recorded songs, the duet with Tony Bennett on Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” and John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”, on which Groban is joined by a children’s choir, are especially pleasing. Acappella outfit Pentatonix are the new reigning kings and queens of holiday music, topping the Christmas (records) list for the last three years. The quartet’s platinum-selling 2016 album has been reissued with five new songs and retitled A Pentatonix Christmas Deluxe (RCA). In addition to interesting renditions of “Up On theHousetop”, as well as covers of Kanye West’s“Coldest Winter” and *Nsync’s“Merry Christmas, HappyHolidays” from theprevious version, the expanded edition includes “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and a duet with Jennifer Hudson on “How Great Thou Art”. As career transformations go, Gwen Stefani’s is one for the record books, so to speak. Over the course of about 25 years, Stefani successfully morphed from the belly-baring lead singer of OC ska act No Doubt to full-fledged diva and fashion icon.Continuing the “feels like” theme of her previous studio album, Stefani’s first Christmas album,You Make It Feel Like Christmas (Interscope) combines her interpretation ofholiday standards (from “Silent Night” to

34 | 12.13.17

“Santa Baby”) along with half a dozen new tunes. Thanks to Stefani’s gay co-songwriter Justin Tranter, it’s the new tunes, including “My Gift Is You”, “When I Was A Little Girl”, “Under The Christmas Lights” and “Christmas Eve”, that are the real gift here. The 2017 double-disc edition of Broadway’s Carols for a Cure: Volume 19 (rock-itscience.com) serves a dual purpose.

First and foremost, it’s a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (broadwaycares.org). Secondly, the 20 selections give listeners a chance to hear artists from some of Broadway’s hottest tickets – includingHamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Kinky Boots, War Paint, Groundhog Day, Anastasia, Waitress, to mention a few, perform traditional and new Christmas songs.

This Christmas, the Latter Days Saints have a leg up, as well as a piano, a cello and a violin, on the competition. Mormon musical acts The Piano Guys and Lindsey Stirling have newly released holiday albums. On “Angels From the Realms of Glory”,the opening number on The Piano Guys’ Christmas Together (Portrait) album, they are joined by fellow LDS members David Archuleta and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra, as well as Peter Hollens. Other guest artists on the album include Placido Domingo (“Silent Night, Holy Night”), The King’s Singers(“O Little One Sweet”) and Lexi Walker(“O Holy Night/Ave Maria”). Fiddler and Dancing With the Stars competitor Stirling bows with her first holiday album Warmer In the Winter (Concord). More than half of the songs are instrumentals in which the plucky Stirling shows off her accomplished string skill on Christmas standards including “Carol of the Bells”, “I Saw Three Ships”,“What Child Is This”, and even Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas”. What separates this disc from the others are the Stirling originals including “Christmas C’Mon” (with vocals by Becky G), the title track (featuring Trombone Shorty) and “Time To Fall In Love” (sung by Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low).

Elvis Christmas (RCA/Legacy) is the latest in a series of Elvis Presley releases in which “The King”’s songs and recordings are reimagined with his vocals backed up by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Elvis Christmas has everything from “Blue Christmas”, “Merry Christmas Baby” and “Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me” to “The First Noel”, “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful”.

5 Ways to Spiritual Fitness by Joshua Neal

Everyone wants to feel good on the inside! Your spiritual fitness is a direct connection to your mind and soul, so it’s just as important as your physical fitness. We all pretty much know how to achieve our physical fitness: by going to the gym, working out, eating right, etc. But how do you achieve spiritual fitness?

What is Spiritual Fitness? It is a person’s belief aimed at promoting the highest level of health andwell-being for one’s life. It is also a process, a pursuit from the inside out, not from the outside in like with physical fitness. Many use their faith and religion as a means to achieve their personal spiritual fitness. If you don’t turn to religion, yourspiritual fitness can be obtained by whoever or whatever your higher power is. And power can easily be you!

Joshua Neal is a writer, blogger and model whose career in fitness and health spans nearly 20 years. Follow him on Instagram @joshuahdneal.

Here are Five easy ways to increase your Spiritual Fitness 1. Meditate Think deeply or focus your mind for a period of time in silence to reflect 2. Environment Surround yourself around positive and like-minded people. Others that have the same aspirations and goals and are able to hold you accountable. 3. Believe in yourself Turn setbacks and milestones into determination and victory! 4. Take a yoga class Yoga goes beyond the physical. Yoga means to yoke or to connect. Yoga connects your mind, body and soul. 5. Worship Go to Church. Pray. Build your faith in God or whoever your Higher Power may be. All in all, there is no harm in building your spiritual fitness to its highest potential. Spiritual Fitness helps you cope with life better, help you stay grounded and non-reactive to the things that are out of your control. In the end, it gives meaning and purpose to life, and there’s nothing wrong with that, right?

I think we had a great time last night!! I think. Asking for a friend: Is there an emoji for crying on floor while eating pizza

Him: why do you always show off your body?

People who tolerate me on a daily basis are true every-day heroes!

Me: Well, if you work your ass off and make sacrifices to buy a Ferrari would you keep it in the garage?

Anyone have a diet/exercise for targeting these GD love handles? I may just have them transferred to my booty. Hey boss, I know I just got back, but when’s my next vacation?!?

All this talk about trimming trees is getting me in the spirit, but not the Christmas kind hehe

ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19)

LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22)

Problems in your relationship arise as your partner feels you are devoting more time to yourself and your many activities, and not enough time at home. He may have a point, as you always seem on the go. Today you may have to ask yourself some tough questions about your ability to commit. This could take a while. Until then, spend more time with him. He may have you realizing what you’re missing.

Today is a high energy day that will have you seeking out beauty in its many forms. You appreciate the simple aesthetics of life, a beautiful sunset, a gentle snowfall, waves crashing on rocks, guys in speedos tanning on top of those rocks. Seek out beauty today, it’s right outside your door. Or not. Take it indoors, and turn your home into a work of art.

TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)

You’ve found yourself settling into a mundane routine, and even you find yourself boring. It may be a good time to break out of your rut, and have a little adventure. Spicing up your life with some spontaneous fun and excitement will keep the blahs away, and give you even more fun things to plan for. Find someone willing to join in. The resulting action could have things getting muy caliente!

You’re not one to give in, but a recent power struggle at work may have you throwing in the towel. You don’t make such decisions lightly, and you will weigh the pros and cons. But this particular situation threatens to escalate, and you may want to get out before she blows. Learn to cut your losses. Because he who turns, and runs away, lives to fight another day.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)

You’re a champion multi-tasker, and you take on projects with relish. You love the excitement of kicking projects off, but you soon lose interest. At work, others have to finish your work for you. In your romantic life, it leaves a trail of heartbroken men who you’ve left high and dry by never calling them back. An unwillingness to finish what you start could have people labeling you as a flake.

You will be forced into a situation where there are only yes and no answers as others ask you to intervene on a relationship problem. You can see immediately that there are no gray areas to work with, and this one is the grayest. It can be a drag when friends throw you into the middle. Either give them the tough answers they probably don’t want to hear, or take a pass on the judging.

CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)

The domestic bliss you crave may be disrupted today as your relationship hits a slippery patch. It can’t always be smooth sailing, but this latest storm is lasting longer than you like, and is getting pretty icy. You can thaw things out by talking them out today. Be sensitive to his feelings, and learn to compromise. Your home will be warm and toasty again before you know it.

Work will prove challenging today, as that raise isn’t going to happen. It may have you thinking of jumping ship. Before you leap, ask why you didn’t get the raise. Perhaps your work ethic has gotten complacent and lazy. Or perhaps your work is going unnoticed by those who count. Either way, being your own best public relations could work better for you than throwing yourself overboard.

LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22)

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)

You’ve started dating a new fella, and it’s feeling like a good combination. You look terrific together, and your personalities are finely meshed. You’ve always had your needs met by others, but today you feel like giving yourself to him. Show him how you feel about him, and let him realize the good thing he has. Open lines of communication can only make this relationship stronger.

Your subtle sense of humor gives you a knack for alleviating tense situations. So yuk it up today. By making them laugh, people can see that things aren't as serious as they seem. But having them laugh at themselves, you'll have them seeing that they're not as serious as they seem.

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)

You’re juggling many plates today, so expect some setbacks. Taking on too many responsibilities seemed like a good idea at the time, but putting out unexpected fires cut seriously into your time. Ask for help today. Trying to do it all yourself could result in more failures than success, and have the boss questioning your ability to maintain a workload.

People owe you money, and it’s collection time. You don’t mind lending to those who need it, but you hate asking for it back. What happens when you get the inevitable sob story from the friend crying poor? You may have to hash out a workable solution so you get what’s owed to you. But let this be avaluable lesson about lending money.

WHAT happened was . . .

What Happened Was... Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and we’ll give you the answers served straight up and with a little ice. I have been secretly hooking up with this guy behind my boyfriend’s back. I know in my heart that our relationship is breaking up, but I still feel bad for doing this behind his back – he’s a good guy and I want him to remain a friend after we break up. How can this happen? Sincerely Moving-On Dear Moving-On Ok, it seems like you’re not feeling very guilty about going behind your boyfriend’s back, and the probable reason why you’re not being honest with him is because you know you’re being a jerk, and that he is likely not to want to be your friend after he finds out you are cheating on him like this. There’s no easy way out here: you need to own up to what you have done and to your feelings! If you want to have any hope of salvaging the relationship so you can be friends, you need to be honest with him starting NOW. And you know what; even though he decides never to see you again, you at least won’t be that guy anymore, and you will re-gain a little bit of your integrity. My boyfriend found out that I’m on Scruff, and he won’t believe I’m not hooking up with anyone, and that it is just flirting on my part. I’m completely honest about my relationship status, so to me it’s just a little spice. What can I do to convince him? Sincerely Hopeless Flirt Dear Hopeless Flirt As you have discovered, there are many unwritten and explicit rules in a relationship. Dating/hookup apps can be seen as harmless fun or extremely damaging to a relationship depending on who you are. In your case, you felt the need to be secretive about having an app and using it, so you probably knew that your partner wouldn’t approve of it. Either way, it is time for the two of you to have a conversation about revisiting the boundaries of your relationship. What is the reason you are sexting others? Are you bored in the relationship? Are you really just a flirt? Are you seeking affirmation because you don’t get enough in your relationship? Be honest and open about your motivation and listen 52 | 12.13.17

to what he has to say about it too. Are there trust issues between you? How would you feel if he created a profile on an app? Maybe you can even use this conversation to venture on something new and exciting together – perhaps create a profile together and see what happens then? But first, have that open and honest conversation with each other. Most guys I have sex with assume that I am a bottom, because of my smaller build and, well, pretty nicelooking ass. I really love bottoming, and I think I’m really good at it, but lately, I have really fantasized about topping a guy. But it seems whenever I hook up with a guy, I’m just kinda flipped over and pounded. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but I just don’t know how to break my ‘eternal bottom syndrome’. Sincerely Bottom-Feeder Dear Bottom-Feeder It should be an unwritten rule that all bottoms need to try topping and all tops need to try bottoming. You know personally how great a good plowing feels, right? And it is only wonderful that you want to try and be the person doing the pounding! And you are right, you probably need to break some of the signals you are sending out to guys you are hooking up with to better let them know what you really want to do. Even though anal sex isn’t about who is more masculine or not, and there is a whole spectrum of anal loving, for you it could be a good idea to think more about the role you are playing based on what you like when being topped. Do you like him to be dominant while you take on a more submissive role? Try to assume that role when you’re with a guy, and see what happens. Also, if you’re on apps, they are a perfect medium for you to communicate with a potential sex partner exactly what you’d like to do in the sack. A hefty and sexy chat before meeting up is also an excellent way to establish said ‘roles’ in the encounter, so you can learn to be more vers in your anal ways.
