We recommend that you give back and do good by participating in the HRC’s MLK Day of Service where you can volunteer or give to benefit Lost-n-Found. And for those who want to learn more and move in the spirit of Dr. King, we have listed many of the celebratory and reflective events that happen on and around MLK Day in Atlanta. May we here also recommend the Rustin/Lorde Breakfast which takes place before the march on January 15 at the Loudermilk Center and which supports the ongoing work of Black LGBTQ. To round off the magazine with a bit of carefree content, we have a fresh interview with Paula Poundstone, and because it’s cold, we thought you might enjoy a good soak!

Monday, January 15 is a National Holiday that commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK Day is not only a day off, but also, as our health expert, Jamie Kirk, notes, a day to be ‘on’ in his weekly article. ‘On’ to actually transform the teachings and actions of Dr. King and to think about how you can do better by doing good.

HRC’s MLK Day of Service To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15th, HRC Atlanta will transform Dr. King’s life and teaching into community action with a day of service benefiting Lost-n-Found. We talked to Percy Brown, who is a member of HRC’s National Board of Governors, a volunteer-led group of corporate and community leaders who manage the organization’s local outreach nationwide, about the day of service and giving. What made you choose Lost-n-Found as the benefactor of this day of service? At HRC, we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our LGBTQ youth, who make up 40 percent of homeless and at-risk youth. We wanted to choose an organization that serves this need within our community. We’ve partnered with Lost-n-Found for MLK Day of Service before and continue to support their work with Atlanta’s LGBTQ youth. Wherein lies the connection between Dr. King and the HRC? We’re inspired by Dr. King’s legacy of action and service to under-served communities. As the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBTQ Americans, HRC honors Dr. King’s legacy with this day of service that is a part of our on-going commitment to further support under-served groups within our LGBTQ community. What are other upcoming HRC events and initiatives? We have our upcoming Mardi Gras-themed bowling event on Saturday, February 3rd. Also, mark your calendars for our 31st Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday, May 5th. Tickets are now on sale for both events. Go to hrcatlanta.com or facebook.com/hrcatlanta for more information. Volunteer Anyone interested in volunteering can go to bit.ly/HRCATLMLK18 to sign up. For more information, contact javierabrown@gmail.com or percy.brown@gmail.com. Other Ways to Support HRC will be collecting supplies for Lost-n-Found through their Amazon wishlist. You can click, purchase and have the items sent directly to Lost-n-Found. Go to bit.ly/ATLMLKWishlist.

1. TRUST Living with a relationship without trust isn’t a relationship worth living in at all. Not trusting your partner only leads to anxiety, stress, paranoia, and frequent fighting. If trust issues seem always to arise, then be honest with your partner. Sit down and talk about everything that is causing distrust in the relationship, and figure out how to fix it.
2. HONESTY Honesty is definitely linked to trust since if you can’t believe what your partner is telling you, you obviously can’t trust them. Sometimes it’s human nature to lie, in fear of the truth bringing about a fight. What’s done in the dark always comes to light, so don’t do anything in the dark. White lies being discovered can even cause your partner to lose
faith in you, and that’s never worth it. Be honest 100% of the time. Lying never leads to true love.
3. SEX Even if you feel like the sex is perfect in your relationship, there’s always room to improve. If you’re feeling fully satisfied by your partner, it doesn’t mean they’re feeling fully satisfied by you. Play around with your partner. Find out something they’ve always wanted to try. Indulge. Try new things. Find out if you both want to be having more sex, or if there are more ways to feel sexually satisfied with each other.
monogamy. Commitment also represents how dedicated each of you is to this relationship. Does your partner envision a future with moving in together, marriage, kids? Is that the same end game for yourself? It’s always important to know what each of you strives for together because if you ultimately want different things, commitment and dedication to this relationship isn’t likely. Too Funny for Words
An Interview with Comedian Paula Poundstone
C
omedian Paula Poundstone has been making us laugh for almost 40 years. Her distinctive deadpan delivery style of stand-up, as well as her colorful suits and ties, have made her a favorite in comedy clubs and theaters and on TV talk shows. The author of two books, her comedic persona has also earned her a place as a popular panelist on NPR’s Wait..Wait Don’t Tell Me. In 2017, she debuted her own NPR podcast, Live From the Poundstone Institute, which is alternately hilarious and informative. I had the pleasure of speaking with Paula in January 2018. Gregg Shapiro: We are speaking a couple of days into the new year, 2018. Where do you stand on new year’s resolutions, pro or con? PP: I can’t speak for the others, but for me, I don’t think it helps. It’s like the grocery store I go to that insists on giving me coupons. I never have those coupons with me and remember to use them when I go back. I tape them to the white board in the kitchen where we write things that we’re out of. I put them in my back pocket. I transfer them from one pair of pants to another.
14 | 01.10.18
Sometimes I wash them in the laundry. No matter what I do, I never have them with me when I go [to the store]. It would be better not to give them to me because it just makes me feel bad about myself every time I get to the register. I think that to some degree is new year’s resolutions for me. I feel lousy because “Oh, I blew that already!” I suppose, to some degree, I have a resolution for every day. I’m a big list maker. GS: As long as you can get through that list… PP: …it’s funny, I think once in my lifetime have I ever gotten through an entire list. That’s probably because I made it wussier that day. My lists tend to go from sift the litter boxes to end world hunger, all on the same list. GS: Your second book, The Totally Unscientific Study of The Search for Human Happiness, was published in 2017. Would you say that writing books could be considered a natural progression or extension for someone who writes comedy or is it a different animal? PP: I think, to some degree, it is a different animal. For one thing, it just plain requires more discipline, which is why I’ve written two books in my entire life. I don’t have that kind of discipline. In fairness, I’m not a writer for a living. If my research on Dickens is correct, I believe he wrote for two weeks, then didn’t, then did again for two weeks. He went for these great long walks where I’m sure he did most of his writing. And he was with a quill and shit! I’m sure those two weeks of writing were secretarial work, that he had notes, at least in his head. I’m sure he crafted those stories while he walked. I don’t have that kind of time to set aside. GS: In an NPR interview that you did around the time the book was published, you said that there’s a “difference between enjoying something and something making you happy”. Do you think that that’s the book’s ultimate message? PP: Yes. If you just take the example of the Lamborghini and working out. Never in my life have I said to myself, when I’ve seen someone exercising, “Boy, I’d like to do that.” But sometimes you see someone in a fancy sports car and you go, “Wow! I wonder what that’s like!” There’s barely a moment of working out that I could say I ever enjoyed. The guy that I did the get
fit experiment with – it was so fucking grueling that I can barely describe it. It was like being beaten with sticks. It was one of the most successful experiments in the book in terms of providing happiness. The Lamborghini, I think it’s safe to say, was a giant fail in the area of happiness. Not that it wasn’t enjoyable. But I don’t think there’s any great biochemical process taking place. It’s never going to say it in a Hallmark card, but happiness is a biochemical process. I think, from the start, that was the question I was addressing in the book: “What could I do that would give me a bounce so that when I returned to my regular life of raising a houseful of kids and animals and struggling with my work, that I’d still feel on an even keel, at least, as I did those things?” GS: The book is a “Totally Unscientific” study. Science also comes into play in your podcast Live from the Poundstone Institute. As school subjects go, where did science rank in your education? PP: Aw, I sucked. In fact, for my seventh-grade science teacher Mrs. Boatman, we had to pick an element and do a report on it. I picked tin. All the things we thought of as tin, weren’t. Tin cans, tin pie plate – they were all aluminum by that point. I had all of these visual aids. [Laughs] I had a pie plate and I’d say, “Well, this isn’t tin, it’s aluminum.” I’d come to something else and I’d say, “Well, this isn’t actually tin either, it’s aluminum.” It was making my class my laugh. We enjoyed the presentation. Afterwards, when Mrs. Boatman announced the grades, which she delighted in doing, she said, “Well, if I was giving you a grade for entertainment, it would be an A. But for science…” [Laughs] I can’t remember if it was a B or C, but my entertainment grade was much higher. Maybe she steered me in the right direction. Maybe I’d be an astronaut now if it wasn’t for Mrs. Boatman leaning heavily on the comedy. GS: Speaking of NPR, before becoming a panelist on Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me and then having your Live from the Poundstone Institute podcast, how much did NPR figure into your daily life? PP: For many years, I was a listener to “Morning Edition”. In the car and at home, I didn’t listen to any stations other than Public Radio. In fact, I used to wear a KCRW jacket because I made a fine donation. I definitely started most mornings off with (“Morning
Edition”) because I trust their news. Although that becomes an issue more and more in current days than it was years ago. The whole idea that some people were telling you shit that wasn’t true. But that comes more from our President and Fox. GS: I’m glad you mentioned the President, because I was wondering if, in the year since Trump’s inauguration, if it has had an impact on your comedy one way or another? PP: I think it has. I talk about him here or there. There are nights when I don’t necessarily. I think it’s had an impact on the audience for sure. People come up to me over and over again and say, “Oh, it was so good to go out and laugh!” He has singlehandedly depressed an entire nation, if not the world. He’s really bummed people out. This idea that the leader lies to you and that we’re being told on a daily basis that we’re closer to nuclear war than we’ve ever been. The idea that we ended up with this guy, I think it’s depressed the hell out of everyone. I’ll tell you what industry is been great for is therapists. I have friends who are therapists and they tell me that their offices are filled with people who want to talk about Trump. GS: You have tour dates on your schedule that take you all the way into July. What are the best and worst parts of being on the road for months at a time? PP: Luckily, I’m not a band, so I don’t go out in a van and just stay out. I would not do well with that. But I go out for a few nights and then I come. Hopefully, it’s weekly. I like to work as much as I can, but I wouldn’t enjoy being out for a month at a time. The audience, the audience, the audience! I live a strange, unbalanced life [laughs] of being basically by myself in a hotel room for a lot of time, and then I go be with a crowd [laughs] and then I go back to being ridiculously alone. But I love the audience. 2017 was a diabolically bad year in many ways, and yet I worked a lot. I was out with crowds of people laughing about the things that were difficult. I feel bad for people who don’t have that. They’re going through the same difficult things I’m going through, they just don’t get to laugh about it a few nights a week. It is really healing. It’s the thing that keeps me sane and, dare I say, somewhat happy.

Now that the cold weather has set in, a good, old-fashioned bath is one of the best ways to get and stay warm. Let Me Turn You On.... By Jamie Kirk
N
ot the non-violent protest. Not his ability to turn the other cheek, and for asking to be treated fairly. Not his eloquent manner and gracious approach to humanity. Not his begging and pleading to help gain black people the right to vote, to use the same water fountain, to ride the bus or just plain ol’ being treated with dignity and respect. The most important part of acknowledging Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is that we don’t have to go to work, schools are closed, there is no mail, and the banks are closed. Now that I have your attention; allow me to explain. The reason I feel it is so important to be “off” on this day, is so that we can be “on.” Be turned “on” to reading about his legacy, be turned “on” to learn about the history of the King Center, to be turned “on” to the uphill battles he fought, that didn’t make the mainstream newspaper and TV stations. It’s our chance to be turned “on” to giving back to our communities. We have lost our way regarding the civility that comes along with being a great nation, and even a great city. We have turned every topic (sports, politics, neighborhoods, and even basic/common NORMAL language like saying Merry Christmas versus Happy Holidays into an all-out debate with two very opposite sides. We have turned into a bunch of hard-headed folks that feel everything is a black or white issue. And that is not the case. There are gray issues, purple issues, red issues, etc. The point is to focus on the issues, not the distracting noise around it. Taking a day “on” gives us time to re-calibrate and focus on what is essential. It’s a chance to educate our ourselves on the Civil Rights Movement, the successful (and unsuccessful) boycotts, and seek out information that will make us more productive and informed citizens of this great United States of America. Which has always been great, by the way. We have to turn ourselves “on” to information, so it’s time to log off Instagram, log out of Facebook, stop texting and driving, put down our homework, and become more informed about MLK Jr. For instance, did you know: 1. At the time of his death, even though he was only 39, an autopsy revealed that MKL Jr. had the heart of a 60-year-old likely due to the stress of his life. 2. MLK Jr. skipped the 9th and 12th grades (because he was just that smart) and entered Morehouse at the tender age of 15. 3. When MLK Jr. married Coretta Scott King, they were not allowed to stay in a whites-only hotel, so instead had to spend the night in a black-owned funeral home.
32 | 01.10.18
4. Over 900 streets worldwide have a street named Martin Luther King Jr. 5. MLK Jr. is one of ten world martyrs of the 20th Century who is depicted in life-sized statues at the entrance of the Westminster Abbey in London. These tidbits of information are hidden gems that you can only know by seeking out the information. Not allowing the media to force-feed you information, but getting the facts for yourself. We can’t allow a President, a friend, a family member, or anyone to dilute the fact that MLK Jr.’s work should not be forgotten and definitely should not be avoided. When we get so busy with our hectic lives and watch mindless TV shows, we are indeed avoiding the teachings of MLK. Jr. We are not doing the work of helping our neighbor, being charitable, or even paying attention to someone that may be “stuck” or in trouble. We are simply distracting ourselves from what is happening right in front of our faces. When someone like Roy Moore is even allowed to get as far as he has gotten in life, with his track record of immoral and unethical antics, we are indeed turned “off.” Are there more people voting these days? Kinda. Are we more informed and paying attention to politics, not just at the national level? Kinda. Are we moving the needle towards equality for ALL? Kinda. This “kinda” approach needs to be more consistent and deliberate. We need to continually care-front those that feel any level of bias or a situation that lacks equality is “okay.” We must do nothing but stay tuned in and turned “on” to issues that matter to us all. Everyone knows someone that is a #metoo. This movement is about anyone and everyone impacted by ageism, sexism, or racism. There is not one person reading this article that has not been touched by someone or impacted by discrimination because of who they are, who they love or how they look. It is up to each of us to start each day committed to doing more than using a hashtag. We need to commit to taking day after day after day after day, as a fresh start and be better human beings. Not taking Monday off, but taking it ON. Taking on this day and every day to help keep Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream stay alive and well. We have the day “off,” let’s make him proud by deserving it through supporting his legacy and dream. We cannot allow his dream to be deferred. Screen Savor Not the Greatest
By Gregg Shapiro
If “La La Land” was a modern tribute and love letter to vintage Hollywood movie musicals, then “The Greatest Showman” (20th Century Fox), with songs by Oscarwinning “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is an unabashed and unwatchable homage to the faux musicals of Baz Luhrmann. If any good comes of this fiasco, perhaps it will be a rush to bring cinematic versions of movie-worthy Broadway musicals such as “Kinky Boots,” “The Secret Garden” and “Hamilton” (and countless others) into production. Opening with a big, splashy center-ring number, a theme that is repeated throughout ad nauseum, “The Greatest Showman” makes it clear via choreography and musical arrangements that it isn’t a traditional period musical. The scene dissolves into a memory of young P.T. Barnum (Ellis Rubin), with holes in his shoes and dirt on his shirt, assisting his struggling tailor father at the New York mansion of Mr. Hallett (Fredric Lehne). While there, the boy becomes smitten with Hallett’s daughter Charity (Skylar Dunn), who shares his feelings. He is instructed to steer clear of her and, of course, he doesn’t do as he’s told. Years later, Barnum (Hugh Jackman) and Charity (an uncomfortable Michelle Williams) marry in spite of her parents’ disapproval. They have two daughters Caroline (Austyn Johnson) and Helen (Cameron Seely). Barnum strives to provide for his family, worried that he will not be able to give them a suitable life. 34 | 01.10.18
But Barnum’s fascination with the odd and unusual leads him to apply for a bank loan (under fraudulent circumstances) so that he may open a museum of oddities, setting the stage for his later inclusion of live animals, humans and sundry other forms of mass entertainment. Hence the birth of the modern circus; which, coincidentally, is presently ceasing to exist. An introduction to gentry such as Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron) opens new and exciting doors for Barnum. As is to be expected, all sorts of conflicts arise, including violent protests from New York’s finest lowlife thugs, Carlyle’s attraction to African-American trapeze artist Ann (Zendaya), and the threat that opera singer Jennie Lind (Rebecca Ferguson) poses to Barnum’s marriage. This is not the first time Barnum’s story has been told onscreen (he’s been portrayed by Wallace Beery, Burt Lancaster, and Beau Bridges, among others) or in a musical (a 1980 Broadway show starred Jim Dale as Barnum and Glenn Close as Charity). It is, however, probably the worst. The show must go on, but must it go on in this badly? The disappointing songs tend towards being repetitive, generic and forgettable. The CGI animals are nothing less than cheap and terrible. “The Greatest Showman” marks the feature film debut from Aussie director Michael Gracey who appears intent on following in landsman Luhrman’s footsteps, but he stumbles and falls from a great height.

If you choose the clown, you should expect a circus I thought I was immune to idiots, but obviously, there is a new strain out now! (At the gym) Him: Are you ready to call it quits? Me: We haven’t been here that long, and it’s not been that intense. Him: I’d rate it an 8
Asking for a friend: is there a browser blocker so you can’t shop any more online sales?
Me: On what scale? 1-10? Him: Yeah, where 1 = ‘thought about working out,’ and 5 = ‘actually made it to the gym.’
Business idea: Open a gym named “Resolutions,” which will have gym equipment the first two weeks of the year, and then turn into a bakery. Getting a machine at the gym after new years is a workout on its own!

ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19)
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22)
You’ll brag to others today about all the action you’ve been getting lately. You’ll go into gory detail and leave nothing to the imagination. But they’ll look at you in skepticism, and wonder why your nose keeps getting longer and longer.
You’ll get good responses to ideas you pitch to your boss this week. So hit the social scene filled with the confidence of having such a positive week. But don’t expect to get a similar reaction from the guys you hit on around town, and be prepared to have more than one drink thrown in your face.
TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20)
SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)
You may find yourself attracted to a sexy new neighbor this week. That tingling sensation in your loins may be telling you that a romance could be in the offing. But asking him out could be risky, especially if you’re not sure which team he plays for.
Beware of persuasive people this week. They may strike when your will is weak and talk you into performing some unsavory acts. Unless, of course, you’re into role-playing where he’s the naughty king and you’re the naked serf. Then you’re on your own.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
Preaching about people’s fashion choices this week won’t get you anywhere. They’ll be loath to take your advice and you won’t understand why. But one glance in the mirror will tell you everything. So lose the pocket protector and suspenders before pointing out the fashion flaws of those around you.
Expect the unexpected. This week it could come in both positive and negative forms. You could win the lottery, get fired from your job or meet the man of your dreams. The latter will sound promising until you realize that he doesn’t speak your language and he’s wearing adult diapers.
CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)
Your energy flow will be reduced to a dribble at some time this week. A lack of sleep could be the culprit. So do your best to get through the week and stay off the Internet when you get home tonight. Staying in the gay chat rooms until the sun comes up could be the indicator of a deeper problem.
Like the twin giants Jupiter and Saturn, most of the men you’ll meet this week will be bloated and gassy. There won’t be anything wrong with that; they’re just not your type. But hang in there. There’s sure to be a Venus or Mars willing to orbit your sun, although at this point you’ll settle for Uranus.
LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22)
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)
You seem to have boundless energy this week. Or do you? Pass on that fourth cup of coffee -- it may loosen your tongue enough to tell your coworkers all the sexy details about your latest conquest. That’ll be too much information for some of them, but others will want to hear even more ... and that’s just plain creepy.
A glimpse of heaven may lure you into a descent into hell. Looks can be deceiving; an angel may be the devil in disguise. So keep your eyes wide open all week. There won’t be a ladder in the world tall enough to lead you out of the abyss you’ll so willingly fall into.
VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)
You may have to dive headfirst into the abyss if you want to find romance this week. Risks can be a good thing, but you’ll never know unless you try. So give your phone number to the cute guy at the coffee shop. And try not to look surprised when he asks what took you so long.
Luck will be on your side when you find yourself sitting on the bus next to the hottie you’ve been pining for. But luck can only go so far, and it’ll be up to you to take the next step. Will you say hello or sit there tongue-tied and stammering? Better decide soon because the next stop is his.
WHAT happened was . . .
What Happened Was... Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and we’ll give you the answers served straight up and with a little ice. Lately, I have been receiving a lot of attitude and pushback from guys I have been on dates with. They all think I’m selfish and that I’m sending mixed signals. The truth is, I do not want to date anyone right now because I’m going through a bunch of stuff on a personal level. I want to sort out myself before dating someone seriously, but I also want the company and the occasional sexual experience. How do I deal with this?
Sincerely Dating Challenge Dear Dating Challenge, Do yourself and the guys you are dating a huge favor: don’t date if you’re not ready to date! It is not fair to the guys who may have an interest in you, and it is not fair to yourself since you’re trying to sort out personal stuff. You even say you’re not ready to date, so just don’t do it. Rely on your friends for the company, and there are plenty of options if you want a more casual or occasional sexual encounter. Once you feel you’re emotionally available again, try out the dating thing, and you probably won’t experience the same negative feedback you’re getting now. I am married to a wonderful man for a long time, but lately, I have been having doubts whether I’m actually in love with him or not. I feel very content, but I’m not sure I’m actually happy. I also find myself being attracted to other men, and even getting these crushes on guys where I imagine myself dating them – and not my husband. In fact, he is totally absent when I daydream about my future. I don’t want to hurt him, but I also want to be happy again, and I don’t think it is with him anymore. What should I do?
Sincerely Out of Love
I have realized there is a pattern that goes on with one of my closest friends, and I don’t quite know how to deal with it. You see, whenever I express an interest in someone, if I date someone, or if I hook up with someone, it seems like he is intent on winning that same person over. Just recently, I realized to which extent he has actually gone to hook up with my exes, dates, and random crushes – and often he has even done it behind my back too. I don’t really understand his motivation behind this since we are not competitive in any way (at least not to my knowledge). Is he ‘secretly’ insecure and feels he needs to compete or ‘win’ when it comes to guys? I don’t understand this, and I don’t know what it means to our friendship – help!
Sincerely Best Friend or Fiend? Dear Best Friend or Fiend? Friendships – especially the deeper ones – are complicated. Your example is exactly that – complicated! Obviously, your friend has some issues if the pattern is really as pronounced as you make it out to be. His motivations for ‘following your footsteps’ could one of many or even a mixture of more: he is jealous of you, he has bad self-esteem, he is in love with you, he is obsessed with you, he has the same taste as you, he is extremely competitive, he needs to perform better than you … The list goes on, but you catch the general picture: your friend is obviously tied up on some notion that he needs to repeat or reclaim what you have done in some way. That’s not good. What’s even worse? What it means to your friendship because that kind of competitiveness is extremely destructive. What happens if you get into a relationship? Will he try to sabotage it by seducing your boyfriend? The ramifications could be very damaging! You need to confront him with what you know and ask him to be honest about what his motivations are. Be prepared; you may not like what he has to say – He may completely deny it, or maybe he is utterly insecure, or there is some kind of jealousy or obsession there. It is up to you to decide whether your friendship will hold after you talk to him.
Dear Out of Love First of all, you need to talk to your partner. It is not fair that you harbor these emotions, and don’t share your heartache with someone you have shared your life with – even though this is not an easy subject to talk about! If you agree that your relationship is worth saving and you think you can find happiness with him again, consider seeing a counselor or therapist to help you sort through the multitude of emotions between you. If you agree that maybe the love has been lost either sooner or later in the process, you shouldn’t hesitate to make some life changes on your path to happiness. As with any change, there is no guarantee that happiness lies ahead, but it is definitely worth a shot. Yes, some changes do not come easy and are full of hurt and pain, but everyone deserves a shot at happiness.
