From the Editor For better or worse, America is the land we call home right now. What it means to be American has been shaken at its very core since the 2016 elections, and regardless of what you voted for back then, it is evident that America is in the process of reassessing what ideals embody being an American. So, while the 4th of July is for celebrating American independence, it is also a perfect opportunity to evaluate what direction the country is going in – and maybe giving some serious thought as to what side of history you want to be placed. Do we live in a country that expands liberties to those who have been denied them or do we go the way of xenophobia and bigotry? Because unless you’ve been living under a rock, that seems to be the choice to make at this point.

Outliers and American Vanguard Art Now Showing at the High Museum
“Outliers” and the avantgarde intersect in a major touring exhibition on view this summer at the High featuring works that reveal the impact of self-taught American artists on the evolution of modern and contemporary art over the past century. The show brings together more than 250 diverse works by more than 80 trained and untrained artists that together offer an unprecedented overview of the profound impact of self-taught American artists on the evolution of modern and contemporary art over the past 100 years. They also reveal how these artists galvanized the mainstream art world to embrace difference and diversity across race, region, class, age, and gender. The exhibition focuses on three historical periods that were marked by powerful interchanges between the avant-garde and its outliers: American folk art, self-taught artistry, and more contemporary art. Artists include Bill Traylor, Jacob Lawrence, Howard Finster, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Cindy Sherman, Lonnie Holley and Kara Walker. “Outliers and American Vanguard Art” debuted at the National Gallery of Art (Jan. 28 through May 13, 2018) and will travel to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) following its presentation at the High. More info at high.org.

The 4th of July is more than just America’s birthday; it’s the biggest summer party event. The 4th of July also happens around the mid-year point, so it’s a big transitional time for thinking of how you started the year and how you want to end it. When it’s a new relationship, the 4th of July is a big opportunity to celebrate a major holiday together and take new steps in a relationship. Here are some ways to spend the 4th of July together.
1. BARBEQUE One of the best parts of summer is all the barbecuing and delicious foods. Hosting a gathering for all your friends, and your boyfriend’s friends is a great time to get the gang together. Have some fun, friends, food, and fireworks. Sounds like a fantastic 4th of July. 2. VISIT YOUR FAMILIES It’s a blessing if you have a supportive, non-homophobic family that you can bring your boyfriend home to meet. Many gays aren’t that lucky. Spend some family time this 4th of July and visit either
your or your partner’s families. Plus, seeing how your boyfriend interacts and fits in with your family can be a huge wakeup call to how long-term the relationship may actually seem. 3. VACATION A lot is going on in the United States now that may make many Americans not so proud to be American. Maybe get out of the country for the 4th of July, or just take a trip somewhere where you can get away and not think about all the bad things going on in this country. Vacations are great for stress relief.
much money. There are ways to still have fun without spending a ton of money on a trip or party. Find out the local celebrations going on. There are usually many places that have public celebrations and fireworks. Check them out.
4. STAY LOCAL The 4th of July may just be a time you want to relax. Don’t want to travel or spend too

Latinx Nights By Mik Hyldebrandt La Choloteca has found its own space in the Atlanta nightlife scene with a creative concept that celebrates the Latinx community while creating an open-to-all party that’s also inclusive to the gay and queer community. Peach talked to resident DJ Brian Rojas about La Choloteca and what the dance party brings to the community. In your own words, tell me about La Choloteca? La Choloteca is an inclusive Latinx dance party that started in 2016 as a night to break away from the machismo and sexism found in everyday life. The party has evolved to now have four resident DJs – DJ Esme, Santiago Paramo, Nena Linda, La Superior, and myself – and we always feature guest DJs that embody the spirit and sound of La Choloteca.
What does Choloteca bring to the Atlanta community? La Choloteca strives to offer a safe(r), accessible space to celebrate the Latinx community through Latin-American music, performance/dance, art, and activism.
What can you expect if you go to a Choloteca party? You can expect all types of beautiful Latinx people from all backgrounds uniting through the power of music. It’s a way to honor our roots from indigenous to afrolatinx and everything in between.
Why do you think it’s important to have a party like Choloteca right now? What I love about this party is that there are no expectations. It is a night to break away from everyday life, machismo, and sexism to create an inclusive environment devoid of bias. With the current political climate, we need to be more visible now more than ever, speak up, and show out against xenophobia. Community, strength, and
12 | 06.27.18
progress will always beat hate.
How can people get involved – apart from showing up at the party? Being present and vocal about injustices and wanting change is a start. Get involved with small or local organizations, and if you are unable to volunteer, consider making donations to the ACLU, RAICES, and the Immigrant Education Project.
Anything you’d like to add? Los malos tiempos pasarán. Anímate y recuerda que sí se puede.. La Choloteca is every third Thursday at MJQ on Ponce de Leon.

There’s no need to go all out in donning stars and stripes flag print for the celebration of Independence Day – but subtle references and a nod to the day’s theme can have you feeling patriotic and perfectly dressed as an American.

Yaysh Chills It Like a “Boss” By Jeff Dorta In celebration of Pride month, female hip-hop artist Yaysh released her new summer jam, “Boss,” along with its colorful music video that is all about letting go of judgment and opening up to living your best life right now.
I wrote ‘Boss’ to inspire listeners to take the reins of life and have fun!
16 | 06.27.18
Hip-pop artist Yaysh is proving she’s in charge in the music video for her rabble-rousing new summer single, “Boss.” Intended to motivate fans to go after what they want in life, the sticky, steamy track — complete with the sound of cold water being poured over ice into a glass — is a call to action, setting the stage for a wild party about to go down. “We live in a world where challenges are high, but our self-esteem is low,” says Yaysh from her Denver home. “I wrote ‘Boss’ to inspire listeners to take the reins of life and have fun!” Along with the song, Yaysh is releasing a music video that was shot in San Francisco. “It pays homage to the history of the LGBTQ community and the bravery of a people who continue to stand firm in their truth despite ongoing adversity.” “I have not always been a boss, especially when I first started out in music,” admits Yaysh. She recalls adhering to producers that didn’t want her to cuss or talk about sexual things and managers who wanted her to wear makeup and act more girly. “Being a female in hip-hop is certainly a challenge because it’s a male-dominated, misogynistic industry with a lot of people that are not that woke,” she explains. “But I’ve always had a light in me that knows my worth and is proud of who I am.”
She later moved to Los Angeles where she met her producer, Troy “R8dio” Johnson (Solange, Chris Brown, Why Don’t We). They connected on their mutual interest in spirituality and began making music together. “Boss” was one of the first songs that Yaysh wrote and they experimented with its sound, actually taking out the chord structure, leaving the track with a sound all its own. “I love the dripping water sound,” reflects Yaysh. “It gives a unique layer to the song. It’s playful, emitting that summer pool and beach vibe while also giving the sense that a real party has begun. I hope it helps people let go and maybe even move a bit to the beat. Life doesn’t have to be so serious. We all need to chill a bit. Chill like a boss.”
Yaysh’s new music video, “Boss,” is available on YouTube and Vimeo. The single will be on iTunes, Spotify, and all digital platforms later this month.
Yaysh says her confidence comes from accepting her faults and honoring her many gifts. Her faith, too, plays a key role. She’s a Shambhala Buddhist and an avid meditation practitioner. “I believe I’m here to serve others. There’s really no point in being alive if you’re not a benefit to others.” “I’m a Scorpio,” she adds with a grin, “so I get like real deep and shit.” Yaysh is also a proud member of the LGBTQ community, a big reason why she chose to film the music video for “Boss” in the gay capital of the USA. “The video depicts a party in the streets of San Francisco with drag queens, go-go boys, lesbians and gay men all just being themselves and having a blast. My intention is to show fans that if you’ll just be you, let go of judgment for a second and open up a bit; you could have the time of your freakin’ life!” Yaysh grew up a rebellious youth in Denver. She struggled in school and would often sneak out of her home to hang out with older boys from the hood. She encountered a conglomerate of drug dealers, gangsters, and ex-convicts. “I learned so much from those good people,” she reflects. “I was taught how to relax, roll blunts, drink forties, freestyle, be tough, kick it, and simply enjoy being with friends, all in the midst of incredible poverty.”

Don’t Worry... Be Happy! By Jamie Kirk
The Fourth of July - commonly known as Independence Day or July 4th - has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, which is a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until today, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from parades, fireworks, concerts to family gatherings and BBQ’s. Blah, blah, blah... But let’s get to the root of the day - NO work, NO school, NO in-town traffic, NO bills in the mail. But instead, a fun day running the largest 10K in the world. A day with family and friends. A break in our routine since the holiday falls smack dab in the middle of the week. Beach time. Lake time. The 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many people. For one, it’s right after the first days of summer. The kids are out of school. College folks are home for the summer. In most cases, it is beautiful out, maybe a tad humid, but nevertheless, summery. The day is pretty light, and not one of our heavier holidays that pits folks against one another for religious beliefs or can have strangers in a Starbucks get into a heated debate about why they do or do not acknowledge the day. In most metropolitan cities, the day comes after Pride celebrations, so people are still coming down from that high (not literally) and are still in a festive mood. The 4th of July is about hanging out, letting 30 | 06.27.18
go, giving in and just taking a day to be one-withthe-summer. There is no need to overthink this holiday, yet some people will. Avoid the mistake of doing an end of summer countdown: “I mean after the 4th, it’s only like a month before the kids go back to school”. Avoid the mistake of counting calories: “I can’t eat the spare ribs, what about my diet?” Avoid mentioning that some African-Americans celebrate June Nineteenth, not the 4th of July. Avoid complaining about your WAVE for the Peachtree Road Race. Avoid mentioning at the pool how hot, muggy and humid it is. NOPE! This is one of the few dog days of summer where we should relax and just be present. Be present by being with friends and family. Or if you choose to be alone, no distractions. Just take this one day to think about how grateful and what a blessing it is even to be alive. Make sure you don’t overcommit with activities, drink too much and be hung over on Thursday, no arguing with your mate about something meaningless, just take this one day OFF and be ON your “A” game by being cool, calm and collected for 24 hours. Use this day just to be peace-filled (or “piece-filled,” whatever floats your boat), and chill out. Don’t go looking for trouble. No negative thoughts. No Thursday “to-do” list in your head. Just take today to be happy! I promise you; you will not regret it.

Extreme Ways
Or Thoughts On Orlando, Making America Safe Again, and Gun Control By Scott King
Tomorrow is my birthday. Yup. It’s a week before the 4th of July. And a couple weeks after June 16th, a newly minted national day of sadness - the anniversary of the violent assault in Orlando, Florida, in 2016, in which one young man took 49 lives, and scarred a nation’s psyche. My immediate and visceral reaction to news of the shooting was not one of shock or horror. I wasn’t sad at first. I was pissed. The fuck off. But I wasn’t pissed off as an LGBT American. You know, one of those Americans whom Trump would soon vow to protect from radical Islamic terrorism. No. I was pissed off as a goddamn motherfuking American, goddamnit. I was pissed that I was living in a country where any misanthrope with an Internet connection and a photo ID could legally purchase a weapon that should only be in the hands of someone who was actually trained and authorized to fight terrorism. Almost anyone, including our friends on the no-fly list, could purchase this weapon. A weapon that could kill and injure 50 people in a matter of minutes. Sorry to say it, my friends, but one sad person cannot do anywhere near as much damage with just a handful of meat cleavers. Or, wait. You know, something about how PEOPLE kill people. With meat cleavers. In Cambodia.
Anyway, I had a day job. In the summer of 2016, when we were all pulling a Hillary and hearing echoes of shrapnel fire, I was working up in Smyrna. Between work assignments and eavesdropping on gossip about the family Julia Roberts left behind, I started to think. My desk was right by the door. It was a secure entrance, but it had a clear view of the staircase and the parking lot attached to it, and vice versa. The dude with the gun would have no problem getting inside and firing off some rounds and killing 40 people in 40 seconds or so. No problem. You never know how you’re going to react in these situations, but unfortunately it’s good to have a plan. My theory was, I’ll just jump on the dude. I don’t know what it’s like to try to move forward with bullets piercing your viscera, but I figured my adrenaline and forward motion would allow me to crash into this dude and distract him from all the other people he was trying to kill for no reason. So I die. Was I not going to die anyway? I’m 5 feet away from the door hello. This way, he kills me and three other people, rather than 43 other people.
Continued on Pg. 36 34 | 06.27.18
That’s 40 other people in the room who survived, and who are scarred and traumatized for life. Their families are shaken up. But those 40 other families, let’s say a thousand people - of various races and genders and sexual orientations and views on gun control - those people do not have to mourn the death of their loved ones.
The gorgeous 2nd Amendment will also be supplemented with some new Amendments. These Amendments will establish for our country a fundamental, Constitutional, unequivocal right to safety from gun violence, whether it be at the hands of our fellow citizens, our resident aliens, our trigger happy police force, or our military. Enough is enough.
As a country, we are like the person in the room who is, quite naturally, frozen in fear at the scary man who storms into the room with the gun (control debate). We don’t say or do anything because we feel like there’s no good option. So instead, we try to minimize the damage. We resign ourselves to mourning our losses, and in the end, we do nothing but bury our dead.
That’s how I feel about the tragedy in Orlando. That’s how I feel about gun control. Thank you for letting me express my opinions. Like an American.
But not me. I’m the crazy bitch who jumps on top of that fucker, remember? It seems extreme, like running full Amazon into a field of colonialist bullets, but my watchword is this: I want to live in a country with a Constitution without a 2nd Amendment. Just skip to the third track. The third track is always your jams. Through the proper legislative and democratic processes of course, the 2nd Amendment should be repealed and replaced with robust local, state, and federal laws legalizing the sale, ownership and possession of certain firearms, and banning others, without loopholes.

WiFi over the ocean is a modern day miracle!
In a relationship with: My air conditioner (I love it so much!) Me: I ate your chicken leftovers, and now I have stomach cramps. Me: Are trying to poison me? I want to throw up! Me: Why do you hate me so much. I give and give, and this is how you repay me? With poison?
At what age do I stop needing as much sleep as an infant?
Me: If I die, please know that I did my best and despite you hating me and killing me, I still love you! Him: You needed to lose three pounds…
It was so hot outside today that I almost linked up with some old friends to get some shade Be careful when you follow the masses – sometimes the ’M’ is silent.
Asking for a friend: What’s the medical condition for the need to eat 5,000 calories right before bedtime?
When you’ve had a long week, and your friend is like ‘come over, we’re doing masks and drinking wine,’ you do it.
I don’t care what you think of me – it can’t be half as bad as what I think of you.

ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19)
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22)
If you need to take a break from your long to-do list today, don’t waste it on surfing the Internet (though you may be tempted to simply veg out for a while). A bit of exercise will clear your head and give you energy.
Several worrisome minor problems are adding up to a somewhat heavy load today -- but you mustn’t let them weigh you down into immobility. Take things one at a time -- by the end of the day, you’ll have made good progress.
TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20)
SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)
Express your love for other people in tangible ways today -- material (flowers or a small gift) or physical (a hug or a gentle stroke). Today is one of those days when actions really do speak louder than words.
It may be time to reveal a secret you’ve been keeping -- something about yourself that embarrasses you. Someone close to you has the same secret, and your revelation will help you both understand that you’re not alone.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
Pay bills, take care of errands and attend to household chores -- today may not be the most exciting day you’ve ever had, but it would be a good idea (and personally satisfying) to take care of these humdrum matters today.
An authority figure of some sort may find fault with you today, or ask that you redo a job you’ve already done. Don’t react in anger. Take a deep breath and get to work. Tonight, exercise will release the tension.
CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)
When was the last time you hosted a dinner party? Well, today is an excellent day for event planning. You’ll likely find some inspiration in a cookbook or a food magazine. Try out a new recipe tonight.
Some information or advice you need is coming to you from a great distance -- physical or temporal. Do you owe a far-off friend or relative (perhaps someone you’ve lost touch with) a phone call?
LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22)
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)
Although you may be in the mood for decisive action today, find time for a session of clearheaded strategizing. Don’t make any moves forward until you have the entire route (and a realistic budget) mapped out.
Today you should shift your focus from the big picture to the fine print -- all your wonderfully innovative, creative ideas will come to nothing if you disregard these small (but significant) details.
VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)
If you start working on small details today, you’ll end up making major headway with a project that has gotten somewhat out of control lately. Recent confusion will resolve into clarity today.
Expect to gain a new understanding of a relationship today -- you may discover that someone’s feelings for you are deeper than you thought. Alternatively, you may realize that you’re the one whose feelings have deepened.

WHAT happened was . . .
What Happened Was... By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice. I’m a relationship with a guy, and we’re doing great, but one of his friends is openly hitting on my boyfriend. I can’t believe he is doing it, and I can’t believe my boyfriend isn’t stopping him. What do I do?
Sincerely About To Get Catty Dear About To Get Catty It’s hard to know when your jealousy gets triggered, but obviously, this is a situation that provoked yours. You start questioning what you think you know about your boyfriend and if he is just an innocent bystander. And you want him to make a clear statement that says he is in a relationship, right? Jealousy is a tricky bitch, and things can easily turn ugly, so no matter what you do, try to follow these ground rules to avoid unwanted drama. Don’t go after the guy flirting – it’s the easiest target, but in reality, he’s not the one you should worry about. Apart from escalating a conflict, you also send a clear message that your partner can’t handle this on his own. Don’t accuse him – Don’t jump to the blame game right away, because that could be more damaging than an innocent flirt to your relationship. Don’t put your boyfriend on the defensive with accusations. Facts are king – don’t assume you know what is going on and don’t jump to conclusions. There may be a good reason for what looked like flirting in your eyes. Set some rules – if you talk about what can trigger jealousy, you will both be able to recognize when an action oversteps a boundary.
I was drunk, and I told my best friend that I was sexually attracted to him and that I think we should try dating – and now he’s frozen me out. I want him back as a friend and not as a lover – I’m over that now - but have I ruined it all now?
Sincerely Strictly FriendZone 60 | 06.27.18
Dear Strictly FriendZone It is actually a natural progression to apply extra layers of feelings to people that are important in our lives. The bond you form with friends can very well be close to what constitutes a romantic relationship between two people, and your feelings reflected that at one moment. The issue is, of course, that he didn’t quite reciprocate those feelings at the time. You also need to be completely honest with yourself: are you maybe in love with him? And do you want him back because of that? Either way, he has complicated things by severing communication with you, at least for the time being. Once you get a chance to speak to him again, tell him that you miss him and that you shouldn’t ruin a friendship over this – that is if you are completely over it, as you say. Otherwise, seeing him again will likely ignite those feelings, and it will be really difficult for the both of you to remain just friends.
I hate to see my ex out and about with his new boyfriend looking great and having the time of his life. I’m glad we broke up because he is a bastard, but it still nags me to see him succeed. How do I get over this nasty feeling?
Sincerely Ex-Clueless Dear Ex-Clueless It is tough seeing your ex thrive without any regard to the hurt he inflicted on you – especially if you are still dealing with the emotional ramifications of the breakup! But just keep in mind that you know the kind of person he is, and he probably hasn’t changed that much. So what he shares may be all perfect and happy, but that’s all surface. You know what he is like behind closed doors when the computer shuts down, and the phone is put away. But there is another thing you need to consider too: Stop wasting your time over this boy, because it is only taking time away from achieving your own happiness – and obviously he is not wasting any time thinking about you! Yes, it’s blunt, but it’s the truth. Focus on your own aspiration and forget about this fool – you already know he’s a jerk, so move on. NEED ANSWERS? REACH OUT TO US, AND YOU WILL GET THEM! SEND YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS VIA OUR EDITOR AT MIKKEL@PEACHATL.COM.
