Labor Day weekend is going to be party central in Atlanta. DragonCon and Black Gay Pride will be happening simultaneously. While you’re stripping down for Black Gay Pride, you can also dress up for Dragon Con. The Marvel and DC comic universes are full of queer characters, some who you may not even realize are members of the LGBTQ community. Here are some gay comic characters you may want to cosplay as for Dragon Con.

MARVEL COLOSSUS

body in body paint and show off, Iceman is an excellent choice.

The big, Russian, muscle man, steelskinned, stud member of the X-Men has been gay in the Ultimate X-Men series. If you don’t mind painting your skin or wearing a body suit, while practicing your Russian accent, Colossus would be an excellent choice. If you’re in a couple then the bigger boyfriend can be Colossus, and the smaller one can be his boyfriend Northstar.

DC

LOKI

MR. TERRIFIC

Loki hasn’t been depicted as explicitly gay in the Marvel movies, but if you follow the comics the character is pretty queer. Want to dress up as the Norse god of mischief? Then Loki will be a great choice.

Mr. Terrific is another DC Comics character that is a regular on Arrow. His powers are more technology-based, and he can create little bombs and gadgets. A pretty simple costume if you go based off of the Arrow character.

ICEMAN Iceman is one of the original X-Men, but none of his depictions in the Fox movies were queer. Some iterations of his comic character have been gay, so if you do want to cover your

show. Nothing wrong with wanting to dress up as a female character, since female characters tend to be the best.

THE RAY Out actor Russell Tovey depicts The Ray in the CW DC comic series, and they decided to make the character gay as well. The Ray may not be the most well known comic character, but that gives you time to make the character your own with queer representation.

BATWOMAN Not exactly a gay male character, but Batwoman is going to make history as the first openly gay superhero to lead their own live action

The Magic of Dragon Con By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Dragon Con attracts over 85,000 people to downtown Atlanta for four days and more than 3,000 hours of comics, film, television, costuming, art, music, and gaming. The internationally acclaimed pop culture event is one of Atlanta’s biggest conventions happening on Labor Day weekend with events and activities across the five host hotels - Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Marriott Marquis, Hilton Atlanta, Westin Peachtree, and Sheraton Atlanta – and AmericasMart Buildings #1 and #2. Fans will get the chance to meet their favorite actors, artists, authors, creators, and experts, show off their latest cosplay, participate in workshops, make new friends, and revel in the joy that is Dragon Con. In addition, Dragon Con offers more than 140,000 square feet of gaming, making it one of the largest gaming conventions in the nation. The absolute highlight of the weekend is the vast Dragon Con Parade that steps off on Saturday, September 1 at 10 am. Beginning at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Linden Avenue, the parade will head south on Peachtree, east (left) on Andrew Young International Boulevard and north (left) on Peachtree Center Avenue. It will end on Peachtree Center Avenue between John Portman Boulevard and Baker Street, in front of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. The parade is free for the whole city, and it will also be broadcast live on TV by Atlanta’s CW69 with a follow-up re-broadcast during primetime. If you haven’t gotten your membership that grants you access to parties, workshops, and activities, go to dragoncon.org for more info – and check out the next pages for some of the significant events taking place during Dragon Con Weekend that kicks off Thursday, August 30 in the afternoon. Get Live With Nikka Costa

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Nikka Costa has been making records since she was a kid, and started recording with her father, Don Costa. She has experimented with different types of music over the years, and her signature style lies in a cocktail of soul, funk, and rock. Peach talked to Nikka Costa about her love for music and how she loves to give people some relief from the world by making sure they have a great show!

What are some of your favorite songs from your most recent album, ‘Nikka & Strings: Underneath and in Between’– and why? ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ is a favorite because it’s my dad’s arrangement (beautifully rearranged for a string quartet by Jeff Babko) and it’s like having a special moment with my dad each time I sing it. I also love ‘Lover You Should’ve Come Over’ by Jeff Buckley. I’ve always wanted to sing that song but could never find the right home for it even at shows… It’s so heavy and beautiful and dramatic. I lost two dear friends over the course of the string project and that song just felt right to cover for that time in my life.

You have a very distinctive sound that lies perfectly in between R&B, jazz, and retro. Who are your sources of inspiration? I’m inspired by so many artists. There are the obvious one like Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Prince, the list goes on and on, but I am also heavily inspired by rock and current music too. I love everything from hip-hop to classical. I like to write about situations I’m in, or my friends are in and just flesh out my observations. It’s harder and harder to get time to just think and dream especially when we are chained to our phones, but I think it’s so important to create that space for ourselves to just have a thought that pops into our heads when we aren’t being distracted by outside information. So, I try for that for inspiration too.

Your version of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ is one of the best out there. Tell us about how that came about? Wow, thank you! We had been playing it at the string shows before Prince passed, and it was always a favorite of mine to sing and the audience always really loved it. It’s such a great song with such a simple and universal sentiment I think people appreciated revisiting it after all these years. When Prince passed, I wasn’t sure if we should continue to perform it. It was just so heavy and charged, but then I felt like we all needed to hear it somehow. Each night we played it, it was like a beautiful release for everyone and the room seems to hold its breath until the end.

How would you describe your road to success? Blood, sweat & tears with some great joy thrown in and lots of gratitude, humility, and fire to improve on myself as a performer and artist.

You are known for a passionate and energetic performance on stage – what can the audience expect at City Winery in Atlanta? Well, I’ve been supporting my strings record for the past year so haven’t been playing my funk shows. I’m amped to get sweaty and loud and get people up out of their seats! I’ve got some amazing players in my band Josh Lopez on guitar who’s been with me for years, Jacob Luttrell who’s a beast and a great artist in his own right, Tim Lefebvre who I haven’t played with yet, but I’ve admired for a long time on bass and Rob Humphreys laying down his sick groove. Plus, there will be wine which is always a plus.

Are you working on any new projects right now? I’m excited to be getting back in the studio and seeing what comes out. I always go in with a plan and then surrender to what comes. It’s always such a cool surprise usually not what I was expecting and then voila, a record! So getting into that space is going to be fun.

What is your process of writing new material? It depends on what I’m going for. With this new record, I want to do lots of collaborating with other musicians and friends so tons of jamming and writing with the band. Stuff like that. Then take it from there. I always write lyrics last. That has been a pretty consistent part of my process. Other than that, anything goes.

Anything you’d like to add? Just that if you’ve never been to one my shows it really is worth it to come out and see if it rocks your boat. Not a lot of people truly play live anymore without tracks and autotune etc. We put it all out there and work our asses off to make sure everyone has a great time. We all need a break from the weight of the world especially now, so I’m hoping to give some much-needed relief if only for an hour! Come get live with us!

You took some time off last year to raise your two children – how is it to be back and on the road again? I’m super excited to be playing more now, and even though I slowed down to be around for my kids I never fully stopped making music and doing shows. I just kept it more local, closer to where I live. I love getting out of LA though and really looking forward to getting back to cities we’ve had such a blast to play in the past.

Nikka Costa Performs on August 27, 8 pm at City Winery Atlanta. Check out citywinery.com for more info and tickets.

Your End of Summer Checklist By Jamie Kirk

With the end of Summer fast approaching (sigh), I thought it would be pretty cool to put together some end-of-summer to-dos. So, here goes!

1

Go to breakfast, lunch or brunch on a patio, and people-watch. I don’t care how crowded the restaurant is, wait for outdoor seating.

2

Take in a full day at the pool, obviously with sunscreen on. But go out about 10:00 a.m. with a good book, take a break for lunch and then head back out. Really soak up the sun and the beauty of a nice summer day.

3

Drive up to Stone Mountain, go to Sweet Water, or any trail NOT in the city limits. Go on a hike or go mountain biking - the key to enjoying nature is breathing non-Midtown air.

4

Go to a Festival. There are still a few more to take in, most notably the North Highland festival. A funnel cake is never a bad idea.

5

Take a day off and work at a coffee shop and sit outside “IF” you have the type of job that allows for this. Or, if you are in school, study outside the library.

want to experience the sun on their backs, as they stretch and find a little bit of inner peace.

8

Water, Water, Water. Atlanta is pretty much landlocked, so go to Lake Lanier or a nice community pool and hang out IN the water. Not laying out, that was #2, this is actually relaxing in the water to relax your muscles and regulate your heartbeat for a few hours or so.

9

Go for a walk that is at least 3 miles, if your health situation allows. Instead of taking Uber, or one of those dumb electric things, walk. Walk to Whole Foods, walk to Peachtree Battle, walk the Beltline.

10

Do nothing. Nothing. Zero. No action items. No errands. No time commitments. Just be un-busy for a 24 hour period. Maybe in unplug from social media and reduce the number of interactions you have with anyone ( outside of close friends and family ).

6

I don’t know how many of these you can accomplish, but I am going to try and hit each one. It’s a good idea to really just check out, while you can, and the weather permits. You will never regret taking time out for the most important person in the world - YOU!

7

Jamie Kirk works for a software company and is a certified spinning instructor. He also enjoys yoga, swimming, bicycling and running. He aspires to start a blog about what we put in our bodies not only fuels our body but our mind and spirit as well. Follow Jamie on IG @tysonsdad

If you have a pet, visit a dog park, but extend the visit much longer than normal. Let your baby go without a lease and run amuck with his/her friends in the park. No constraints, just going commando so to speak.

Take a free yoga class in the park. These are still offered in many areas. Get your downward facing dog “on” with other folks that

People Are Strange Scott King’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. He could teach you, but he’d have to repeal and replace. Scott King is, like, a really smart person.

Or How DragonCon Is Wicked Queer By Scott King Photo:Shutterstock.com

Spectacles testicles wallet watch. And what a spectacle it is, to watch. I’m talking about DragonCon, of course. To what did you think I was referring?

It’s not queerbait. It’s a fish food banquet. It is ambrosia, the nectar of the gods, served in red solo cups. Just please no tighty-whities.

DragonCon is Atlanta’s annual Fantasy Camp Gamer Convention. Obviously, I don’t know what the terminology is, but it’s a whole bundle of fun. And it is wicked queeah (that’s how they pronounce LGBT in Maine, the home of Stephen King). Each year, thousands of beautiful nerds and escapists escape to Atlanta for Labor Day weekend, and cohabitate with Black Gay Pride and the first Chick-fil-A sponsored SEC game of the season.

Love is love, regardless of gender or galaxy intrigue. So how did this ephemeral utopia come to be? I can only imagine that the social politics of these gatherings back in the 20th century were libertarian at best.

It is something to behold. Speaking of which: “My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we CAN suppose.” - J.B.S. Haldane, 1928 Ain’t that the truth. This one time at band camp, I was crossing the crosswalk, uptown. This cute little dude with a pizza box was crossing with me and was all eye contact and empathy. We chatted about things and about the gamer convention he was attending and whether or not I was attending as well. I confirmed that, no, I was just entering the same bougie hotel he was in order to hook up with a dude. Would he want to join us? Have some fun? Ummmmm, no thanks. He looked very confused. Like he’d never been informed about how the big bad world works sometimes. The next seven stories of elevator silence were cute. He couldn’t possibly have scurried out of that elevator faster. Poor little dude. I hope he enjoyed his pizza. He’s in the minority, though. Most years, when I check out DragonCon, with a ticket or without, the cisgendered straight men are all about the gaymers, the LGBT, and the open-ended ambiguity. Not to mention the exhibitionism. Man cannot live on Instagram alone. A decent portion of the Maids seem more into each other than Brave Sir Robin, so the dewds stand and pose.

34 | 08.22.18

Well, think about it. A hero is a lone wolf. Ladies only serve to distract him. Fellow men are only there to be expedient to the plot. The hero’s real soulmate is his nemesis. The villain, all smoldering anticipation and naughty, naughty thoughts, is his spiritual muse and obsession. It’s kinda gay. Come over to the dark side. I am your father. Quien es tu papi? Beauty shines in the darkness, though. I took a boyfriend from out of town to DragonCon once. At first, he was like I’ll be going back to Cali, Cali. But then he realized it was something different. In Atlanta, believe it or not, not everyone is a celebrity. So he and I stood out, mostly due to a lack of competition. The girls in their faery wings picked up on us. They were like are you guys together? We were like yeah. If we buy you a drink, will you make out? We were like yeah. A bunch of straight guys in monkshoods came over to us and said, “You guys are SO BEAUTIFUL.” My spine has never tingled so hard. The next day, me and my boo went down to St. Simons Island, for a little beach time and a respite from this urban life of decay. We were with a bunch of gays at the haus; then we went to the beach. Then we went to the dock. Me and my man were holding hands and walking arm-in-arm. People would not stop fucking staring. It was like we were superheroes or something. Freakiness is relative. The truth is out there. Live long and prosper. Can I get a pic?

fitness We’ve all experienced it; there’s that one person at the gym doing your biggest pet peeve! What was it? Dropping the weights and causing a gym-quake? Chatting loudly on Facetime and you can hear both sides of the conversation? Popping a pimple in the mirror? I understand! Unfortunately, we’ve all had to deal with someone forgetting their gym manners at one point or another and maybe, by spreading the word, we can eliminate a few of the more common offenses. Every gym or fitness facility has their own set of rules and procedures that we are meant to follow, but even larger than that are the universal rules and procedures that are commonly known between all fitness facilities - or they should be! Below I’ve listed some universal understandings that should be applied to all areas of the gym or fitness facility. This list outlines a few reminders to be practiced when we’re at the gym to ensure we all have the best experience possible.

1. Put It Back! Put your weights/equipment away when you’re done with it; why should others be left to clean up after you? Don’t assume that the next person will be (or even can) lift the weights you’re using. Putting what you’ve used away is not only the right thing to do, but by doing this, it encourages others to do the same.

2. No Phone Zone! Stay off your phone or limit your texting or phone conversations. Nobody needs to know you and your mother are fighting right now and that it is disrupting your life. Guess what? You’re disrupting everyone else’s workout. Even worse than the phone is FaceTime’ing; double the conversation! If you have to be on the phone while at the gym, please remember to keep it down and respect the others around you. Don’t sit on a piece of equipment that others could be using. Better yet, step off the gym floor and wrap up your conversation without disrupting everyone else.

3. No Sweat! Wiping down benches or equipment when you’re finished with them helps prevent spreading illness and germs. Most fitness facilities provide either towels and cleaning supplies to help with this task. Not only is it polite to do when you are done but sets a good example for others to follow.

4. Learn To Share! If you are doing multiple sets or supersets throughout the gym, allow the equipment you are using to be utilized by others while you are resting or away from the equipment.

36 | 08.22.18

Time To Talk GYM ETIQUETTE! By Darren Floro-Bryant Allowing others to “work-in” with you creates a better experience for everyone at the gym, especially during peak, congested times.

5. Was That An Earthquake? Don’t drop your weights; it is disruptive and sometimes startling. Don’t get me wrong; from time to time there will be a situation where the weight you have lifted needs to be dropped because you have either fatigued or it is not safe to place it down, but these situations are not the norm. Also, there is a clear difference between dropping the weights and throwing the weights. Regardless, this should be avoided as much as possible. Dropping weights can damage the equipment, the gym floor, or possibly another individual.

6. Do You Hear What I Hear? Use earphones to listen to music while on the gym floor instead of blasting your tunes through a speaker. Whether it’s Britney (bitch), Metallica, or your favorite needlepoint podcast, not everyone shares your taste in music or motivational musings. What works for you may not work for others, so plug it in or turn it off.

7. What’s That Smell? We’re all hot and sweaty so out of respect for each other; please use deodorant. The same rule applies to cologne. Too much of anything is not always a good thing.

8. Do You Have To Do That There? Be mindful of your surroundings and those around you. If there is an exercise that you need to perform that may interfere with the flow of the gym, try to find a low-traffic area. If others are nearby, be courteous and let them know your plan. Don’t be the one everyone is Facebooking about. Practice your gym manners and lead by example.

When I die I want to be placed in that Bodies exhibit so I can be thin and looked at

Asking for a friend: Thunderstorm stress-eating doesn’t count, right?

Him: What is this? Me: It’s a wig. A beehive wig. Him: Oh ok! It’s cute.

People say I’m condescending – that means I talk down to people.

Me: God, I love being gay!

Summer is almost over, so here’s an update on all the fun things I did this summer: 1. Work

How ironic to get rained out at the TITANIC show…

Good news about this heat is that is always looks like you have been doing 30 minutes of cardio!

We have to be best friends forever now, because you already know too much!

I just saw several straight guys with a mustache, so I guess it’s time to grow my beard back.

ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19)

LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22)

Nothing makes you feel more virile than a vigorous workout. So find some time today to hit the gym. Breaking a sweat will help relieve stress, and you’ll have plenty of eye candy to keep from focusing on the intense pain you’re inflicting on yourself.

Take an active interest in the people you meet today. It’s always good getting to know people past a surface level. Who knows, you may meet a guy who you’ll want to go deeper with. Much, much deeper.

TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)

Be tolerant of the shortcomings of others today. Treating people with arrogance gives you the off-putting air of superiority of an Addison deWitt. Patience and tolerance are two basic human traits you seem to be in short supply of these days, but give them a try anyway.

Today will not be a good one to ask for a loan, unless you like hearing no, no, no! You may have to cut back on spending for a while, making decisions based on need and priority. So if you don’t eat for the next few weeks you’ll be able to take full advantage of clearance sales.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)

This will be a good day to put some of your ideas into action. There may be higher-ups who are impressed, and people will suddenly be taking you seriously. Avoid the inevitable ego swell that goes along with such stature. People paid attention to Corey Feldman for a while, and now look at him.

You’ll need to be optimistic to get through a potentially pessimistic day. Paint on a smile and bring as much cheer to others as you can. But like doomed ‘Titanic’ captain John Smith, you may have to acknowledge that the ship is going down, and you’ll have to find a ladies dress pronto!

CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)

You’ll be the torchbearer today, the one everyone expects to lead them through the darkness. You won’t have a problem with that, because it puts you at the center of attention. But have a plan before you start. What good is holding the light if you don’t know the way out?

Personal problems will mount today and by day’s end you’ll wish you were a monk. Except you’d like to wear something a little more contemporary than those archaic robes. And there’s no way you’re cutting your hair. Hmmm, maybe being a monk isn’t such a good idea, after all.

LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22)

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)

You breeze into situations with the confidence of a Hollywood celebrity, without the limo and posse, of course. But guys are attracted to your manly poise. Be careful of bending the truth too far. A job at the video store technically puts you in show business, but not in the manner they think.

Keeping your impulses under control today could keep you out of a lot of trouble. Too much of everything will beckon today, and you’ll want to take full advantage. But a simple ‘no’ could keep you from waking up hungover in the bed of someone you don’t even know.

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)

There will be too much going on all at once today, but good luck in trying to put on the brakes. Stay flexible and go with the flow. Gliding along on a current is a lot more fun than trying to swim against it.

Trying to stay in focus today will take all of your mental capabilities. There may not be much available so expect to drift in and out today. Fantasy and reality may blur, so don’t be alarmed by a vision of your barista in a loincloth brandishing a whip. Whether that turns you on is another story.

WHAT happened was . . . What Happened Was... By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice. I just went through a dramatic breakup, and I can’t seem to let go of him. I realize that I am actively stalking him on social media, and I have even made fake accounts, so I can check up on when he is online on Instagram and Messenger. My mind revolves about what he might get into, if he is talking to other guys, or hooking up. I can’t shut it off, and I wake up in the night having dreams about how he let me down and how is now happier than ever without me. I can’t let any of it go! Help me, please! Sincerely Love-Lost My Mind Dear Love-Lost My Mind Breakups can be very ugly. They can feel like an open wound that keeps hurting and won’t heal, and often the drama from the relationship and the ensuing breakup stays with you much longer than what is good for you. There is no doubt that you are displaying some destructive and obsessive behavior – and that needs to stop because it will mess with your mind! In your case, you need to talk to someone that can help you cope with the compulsive feelings you have towards your ex. A good friend would be good, but a therapist would be ideal so you can deal with the destructive nature of your feelings. As a first step, you need to stop stalking him online. There is absolutely no need for you to track his online presence, so delete the fake accounts and block the hell out of him, so you get some distance from him. The compulsive impulse to check up on him will be difficult to control at first, but it will diminish with time – in this instance, social media is not your friend so consider a hiatus to get some serious distance from your behavioral pattern. And make that appointment to see a specialist! It may be an extra cost to you, but it is no price to pay for your mental health.

For a couple of months I have been flirting with this co-worker, and although nothing has happened, it is starting to be the cause of some office gossip. I 60 | 08.22.18

really like him, but I am willing to keep it at the flirting for now. I still feel I am crossing the line between personal and work. Am I? Sincerely Work It Dear Work It Yes, you are already crossing that line – no doubt about that. The big question is how far you are willing to take it? It is totally fine to have an office flirt, and simply keep it at the flirtatious level – because often the daydream is just better than reality. – you know, sometimes a little daydream is better than reality. If you do end up pursuing this, you also know that it comes with a whole other set of implications that go beyond just the occasional romp – and even more fodder to the gossip mill! So considering all that, is it worth all the distraction and drama in the workplace? My advice is that you don’t pursue this and keep those lines clear and separated.

A friend of mine doesn’t believe in deodorant, which means that sometimes he has bad B.O. I’m afraid to tell him, but I think it is scaring guys away because it seems like he just lacks cleanliness. Should I just come out and tell him he stinks? Sincerely Body Oh Too Much Dear Body Oh Too Much Short answer: yes, you should! It may be a principle to him, but as soon as it starts being borderline offensive to others, it’s time to take action. You don’t have to be harsh about it, but maybe buy him deodorant and tell him you noticed that he might need it sometimes when it gets a little strong. A good friend is also an honest friend, and you should be able to tell him the truth and help his social skills! NEED ANSWERS? REACH OUT TO US, AND YOU WILL GET THEM! SEND YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS VIA OUR EDITOR AT MIKKEL@PEACHATL.COM.
