The gay stereotype is that gay men are obsessed with their appearance and constantly in the gym. But that stereotype has also caused many gay men to feel pressured to use steroids, develop eating disorders, and push their body to unhealthy limits. Add to that binge drinking, drug use, and wild sex and what seems like a healthy lifestyle may not be so.
Luckily, it’s never too late to take control of your narrative and start to live a healthier lifestyle. Here are some ways to improve your wellness not only for the rest of 2018 but for the rest of your life.
FITNESS IS A LIFESTYLE, NOT A FAD Just because swimsuit season is over, it doesn’t mean it’s time to stop going to the gym. Winter does mean wearing more clothes and being covered up, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about what you look like with your clothes off anymore. Stop with the crash diets or only going to the gym before the big event. Make working out part of your weekly routine. Losing weight and gaining muscle isn’t about making it happen as fast as possible. It’s about slowly, steadily, and consistently
working towards your body goals and maintaining them once you achieve them. So, make up your workout routine and stick with it.
PREPARE YOURSELF AGAINST HIV Atlanta is still in the top 5 of cities where new HIV nfections are the highest. Truvada has been on the market a few years now, so there’s no excuse for ignorance when it comes to preventing HIV. There are many affordable ways to acquire Prep so that you can prevent yourself from becoming another statistic. Millions of gays lives were lost during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Thankfully, HIV is no longer a death sentence, but we owe it to our fallen gay ancestors to protect ourselves. Find out how to get on Prep ASAP.
MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH Queer people are still more likely to commit suicide than heterosexuals, which is a startling statistic. Now is the best time to be gay in terms of laws, protections, and equality, but there’s still a long way to go. Many gays are still dealing with rejection, discrimination, homophobia, and a plethora of other problems. It can really get you down. Being gay isn’t easy, but we can never give up the fight. Take care of yourself mentally. Whether that means picking up a new creative hobby to channel your stress. Taking a vacation. Going on a break from social media, or even sex. Do what you need to do to keep your mind clear, and thoughts in order.

Top Of The Heap By Gregg Shapiro Now available on VOD, “Susanne Bartsch: On Top” (The Orchard/World of Wonder), about “queen of the night” party-thrower and fashionista Susanne Bartsch, joins the ranks of documentaries such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, “RBG,” “McQueen” and “Whitney,” attracting audiences. Even though it takes a while to deliver its wallop – and be prepared for when it does – it’s still worth a look.
*The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or position of Peach.
Swiss-born Bartsch says she felt stifled as a child and “never wanted to fit in with the norm.” She moved to London under the guise of learning better English but never attended school. Instead, she was out gallivanting all night. Her parents stopped supporting her when she stayed in London, and she landed a job at a store called Crumble, later coming to America as the girlfriend of a painter. Bartsch, who’s been living at the Chelsea Hotel since 1981, wanted to bring the explosion of post-punk creativity she experienced in London to the states. She opened a fashion business, bringing avant-garde people and style from London to NY. In 1986, she started hosting a night in a club inspired by Leigh Bowery’s Taboo. She was soon dubbed New York’s “queen of the night” (according to Interview subject Michael Musto, “no one can throw a party like her”), on a mission to “unite gay, straight, uptown, downtown, drag, businessmen.” The price of admission? “Dress up, look fabulous.” Among the nightlife personalities interviewed in the doc are Amanda LePore, Joey Arias, Duo Raw, Kenny Kenny, Queen Sateen & Exquisite, Muffinhead, Sussi Suss, make-up artist Kabuki Starshine, and drag mother/activist Flawless Sabrina, among others. The doc’s co-producer RuPaul, who met Bartsch in 1988 when she hired to him to emcee her night at Copacabana, talks about how Susanne picked up where Warhol left off. Bartsch’s personal life is also undeniably fascinating. Just ask her ex-husband gym owner David Barton. Bartsch and Barton, who have spit up, gotten back together and split up again (“like a yo-yo,” says Susanne) are also the parents of son Bailey Bartsch Barton, a student at Brown University. It’s Bailey who actually provides some of the most endearing background on his mother. While Bailey doesn’t go to most of his mother’s parties (he admits it’s “hard for him to do what his 14 | 09.19.18
parents are good at”), he appears grateful to have had parents with an unconventional lifestyle who showed him all the options, growing up in Chelsea surrounded by positive, loving relationships. The doc also features the lead up to the opening night of Fashion Underground: The World of Susanne Bartsch, an exhibit at the FIT Museum on New York. As a muse to some of the most important designers in history, Susanne was convinced to do the museum exhibition by Valerie Steele, chief curator at the FIT Museum. The doc’s emotionally stirring highpoint occurs late in the film when Susanne’s contributions to AIDS awareness and fundraising are highlighted. While the (pre-social media) world she created in the clubs was known as a place where no one had to hide, where they could feel free for a few hours in a safe place for those who felt like they had nowhere else to belong, it was the action she took at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic that had the most profound effect. Bartsch is visibly shaken when talking about Klaus Nomi, the first person she knew dying of AIDS in the 1980s, as well as when she remembers the numerous AIDS-dead and the impact on the Harlem ballroom community. At a time when people were torn between grief, terror and rage, and homophobia reached new levels, Susanne came up with the idea for the Love Ball, an AIDS fundraiser and “serious political action.” Recruiting Simon Doonan (from Barney’s) to help her, the event snowballed with tables selling for $10k, corporate and private sponsorships, celebrities in attendance, and substantial media coverage. Single and “not 18 anymore”, Bartsch has nevertheless endured for 30 years, With “Susanne Bartsch: On Top,” co-writers/directors Anthony Caronna and Alexander Smith have found a fitting way to pay homage to her contributions and staying power.

Rivers’ Tunes
An interview with Mark Rivers By Gregg Shapiro
Atlanta-native and composer/writer Mark Rivers is on a roll. Known for his work on Mr. Show and Parks & Recreation, Rivers has garnered his first Emmy Award nomination for “Totally Gay”, a song featured in the first season of the irreverent, but acclaimed, animated Netflix series Big Mouth. A highlight of the episode “Am I Gay”, it features a duet between Freddie Mercury and co-lead character Andrew Glouberman, it’s easily one of the funniest homages of all time. Rivers was kind enough to make time for me to interview him while he was in Paris with his family in August 2018. Mark, congratulations on your Emmy nomination for the song “Totally Gay” from the Netflix animated series Big Mouth. What does such an honor mean to you? Not to sound like a whiner, but I guess it feels like, “Oh, finally some recognition [laughs]!” When I compose on other shows, you’re, if not behind the scenes then, you’re not so well noticed. It’s always more fun when I’m allowed to write songs for a show. There’s more recognition. I’ve sort of had two careers, as a writer and composer/songwriter. None of the shows I’ve ever written on have gotten any accolades of this sort; never been nominated for anything. It feels like I’ve been doing this stuff for a long time and I feel like I’ve earned it.
Interview continues on pg. 18 >>> 16 | 09.19.18
proudly supporting our community since 1991! we love you!
If you win, do you have place picked out to display your Emmy? I don’t. I have an eight-year-old daughter and I strongly suspect that it will end up in her treehouse [laughs]. Whether I want it to or not. Or somewhere in her room.
How difficult was it to find someone who could sing like Freddie Mercury? That was the key! Luckily, it wasn’t very difficult at all. There was one guy who came to mind, that was Brendan McCreary. I found him fairly easily because a mutual friend of ours, Brendan Small, who is a musician and show creator – he created the show Metalocalypse– is a very good guitar player. Also an avid Queen fan. He’d done a show a couple of years prior, put together a big band of very good musicians and back-up singers, and they did a night of Queen music. The singer was Brendan McCreary. He was the first guy that came to mind. He can do such a good Freddie. That was my first concern when they said they wanted to do a Queen song. Forget all the other daunting aspects of it. I felt like, “Well, I can do a version of those things. But if I can’t find a guy who can sing like Freddie…
The song is a combination of homage and parody. Have you heard from the members of Queen about the song? No! I would love to. I don’t know if they’ve ever seen or heard it. I’m a little nervous that they might be mad or something [laughs].
I would think they have a good sense of humor. I don’t feel like I would be in any danger of copyright infringement or anything. The melody and the chorus are original enough to be safe. I hope they would appreciate it. I would love to hear from those guys!
What do you think about the casting of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody? Rami Malek is the guy on Mr. Robot. I guess we won’t know until we see it. I originally heard an early rumor that it was going to be Sasha Baron Cohen. I was excited about it because I’m a fan of his, as well. This other kid, I don’t know. We’ll see how he does [laughs]. I just hope it doesn’t go the route of typical biopics [laughs]. There’s always that obligatory moment, like in the Johnny Cash one, [imitating Cash’s speaking voice] “I don’t know, I don’t think I’d really walk the line for her.”
The song (sung by the character Andrew, voiced by John Mulaney) is featured in the “Am I Gay” episode from the first season of Big Mouth. What do your gay friends think of it? 18 | 09.19.18
What I should have done was played the song for them before I delivered anything, just to make sure everything was kosher. I didn’t think to do that until it was way too late. They laughed and thought it was hilarious. I showed it to a couple of gay men friends who were like, “Send me a link to that!” I said, “I will when it’s available.” I didn’t do the quality or litmus test until later. Luckily, I’m in the clear. I sensed that I would be. The showrunners and the episode itself are conscious of that stuff. The song is very positive. The story is a positive take, ultimately, on gayness. We weren’t too worried.
I’m an Emerson College alum and I understand that you spent a lot of time hanging out on the Emerson campus in Boston when you were a student at Berklee College of Music. I moved to Boston in 1984. My good friend there was David Cross. He had just started at Emerson the year before. I was going to Berklee College of Music, but I didn’t hang out with any Berklee people, not one! All of my friends were at Emerson. They were fun and funny. They didn’t talk about jazz or obscure music I wasn’t into. I was into XTC and Elvis Costello and The Jam. At that age, I wasn’t into jazz. I didn’t want to hang out with those people. Even post college – I lived in Boston for 14 years – I was still friends with David and I started meeting other people in the burgeoning comedy scene. I developed early friendships with Louis C. K. and Mark Maron and Janeane Garofalo, all these people who were just starting out then.
The Boston music scene during the 1980s was amazing. One of the things that came out of your time in Boston was being a member of the band The Cavedogs, who had a major-label recording contract. What was that like for you? The major-label part was a blast. But we spent a long time languishing in the indie rock scene before the indie rock scene broke with Nirvana. That late `80s period was a super fun time in my life, but it was also frustrating. We spent about six years becoming a big Boston band, and in New England to some degree but we couldn’t get a record deal to save our lives. When we finally did, first we were on Enigma, and then ultimately on Capitol, that was great, that was a blast. We finally got to get out of Boston and tour the country and be a working rock band and leave our cruddy day jobs behind. So much of my time in the band, and my early years in Boston, were spent working at whatever day job I could make a living at and playing clubs. Going down to New York to play CBGB’s on a Tuesday night and then packing up the van and driving back that night to make it home in time for work. Those are my memories of the Cavedogs, really [laughs]. This interview was conducted and published before the 2018 Emmy Awards which were televised on September 17, 2018.

Put Your Chest to the Test By Darren Floro-Bryant
I have talked about a number of training styles in past publications and why or how they are beneficial and have provided a few examples explaining each style. I’ve talked about HIIT style of training, a killer 20’s workout, supersets and I’ve also talked about the benefits of a full body work out, even providing a sample workout. Now I am going to start presenting some sample workouts for specific body parts incorporating some of the styles previously talked about, but also sharing some alternate styles and showing you how they can all work together to help maximize your results in the gym. Today, I am going to outline a sample chest workout focusing on dumbbells, body weight and a few other pieces of equipment you will find at most gyms even most hotel fitness rooms.
Warm Up to Proper Form Always make sure you warm up your body and your joints before starting any fitness routine. Also, make sure to consult with a fitness professional to ensure you are practicing proper form or if any modifications need to be made because of either an injury or any other form of problem areas you may need assistance with. There are always solutions and workarounds that can be implemented.
20 | 09.19.18
Dumbbell Chest Press - 10-12 reps Superset with: 30-second straight arm plank + Bodyweight squats 12 reps 3 sets of each These exercises are great to group together because you are doing 3-4 styles in this exercise grouping. You are intensifying the chest press by immediately going into a straight arm plank. A straight arm plank (or high push-up plank hold), engages the pectoral muscles you just used for the chest press along with the secondary or supporting muscles of the triceps and shoulders in an isometric hold with the added bonus of core work. The superset of the bodyweight squats is a form of active recovery, it allows the muscles for the chest press to rest and recover, but still helps keep the heart rate elevated, and the core engaged.
Alternating Incline Dumbbell Chest Press from the low or down position - 10-12 reps per arm Superset with: Push-ups on the narrow end of a weight bench 12 reps + Angled donkey kicks 12 reps per leg 3sets of each This is another great group of exercises because you are doing 3-4 styles in this exercise grouping. You are intensifying the incline chest press by holding the dumbbell in the down part of the range of motion while you press the other dumbbell providing time under tension and helping build stability and strength endurance in the joints and muscles involved in a chest press. Then by immediately going into push-ups on the narrow end of a weight bench, you are engaging the chest from a different angle and grip. This type of push up engages the lower side of the pectoral muscles along with the secondary or supporting muscles of the triceps. With this type of superset, you may want to gradually increase the weights of your dumbbells for the press, as you will likely find this will fatigue the muscles involved in the chest press a lot quicker. The superset of the angled donkey kicks, again, is a form of active recovery. It allows the muscles for the chest press to rest and recover but still helps keep the heart rate elevated and the core engaged.
Flat Dumbbell Chest Press HOLD from the low or down position 30sec Superset with: Incline Dumbbell Chest Parallel (palms facing in) Press + Standing bodyweight calf raises 20 reps 3 sets of each This exercise grouping is tough because the isometric hold at the start of the superset gradually overloads the muscles involved in a chest press. Then by immediately supersetting
with the incline dumbbell parallel press, you can go a little deeper with the press creating an even greater overload while implementing a greater range of motion hitting the muscles involved from different angles. The super set of the bodyweight calf raises are used simply for active recovery.
Machine Chest Fly - 12reps Superset with: Straight arm plank on a weighted ball or medicine ball with alternating leg lifts or glute squeezes 15reps/leg 3 sets each This exercise pairing has multiple layers to it. First, you have the chest fly which helps target the outer edges of the pectorals in the open position of the fly right into the inner edges of the fly when squeezing or pressing the hands together at the closed or top position of the fly. Then by adding a straight arm plank on a weighted ball or medicine ball with alternating leg lifts or glute squeezes not only intensifies the squeeze from the fly but adds an element of balance to this isometric move and by adding the leg lifts the balance factor is taken up a level and challenges the full body.
Burpees 10 reps 3 sets each Yep, I said it – Burpees! Ties it all together and finishes off the workout with high intensity and helps keep the metabolism fired up for quite some time after the workout. Yay, BURPEES!! This workout will help with the development and growth of your chest and can easily be modified or adjusted as needed, simply by switching up a few of the groupings to switch up the target areas and intensity. Connecting the Dots By Jamie Kirk
Feel like you would like to be more balanced? Do you feel like something is missing? Do you often feel like there is a disconnect in you? Do you get that nagging feeling that something is missing? If these questions are looming in your head and your heart, intermittently or frequently; it sounds like you need to do a connect exercise. A connection exercise is really being able to align your mind, body, and spirit. Bringing balance and peace to your life by not allowing any area to be compromised. A connection of the mind, body, and spirit ensures that you remain focused, you are making great choices, and you are able to silence the noise that everyday living can bring. Let’s break them down one for one.
Ensuring the Mind Is Connected Simply put, it’s thinking thoughts you only want to manifest. It’s keeping your head focused on positive thoughts and ensuring that you are solely focused on being present. Not robbing your current situation by reflecting on things that have happened, things that may occur and things that may never happen. Our lives will play out just as we think they should. If we believe uplifting and powerful thoughts, uplifting and powerful karma shall be sent our way.
Ensuring the Body Is Connected Treat the body as a temple. It’s honoring our body by appreciating even the smallest of movements. Many people believe that honoring your body means hitting up the gym, or cycling, or doing yoga. The true definition of honoring your body means that you are listening to it. Pushing yourself a bit beyond your limit, but also being able to know when you need to rest and take a break. Our bodies are machines, and that means they break down if they are not properly maintained.
32 | 09.19.18
Ensuring the Spirit Is Connected Believe in whatever works for you. For me, unequivocally it is God. He is the center of my joy. Believing in God grants me peace beyond my understanding. But I think that if praying to a rock gives you peace, do it. If meditation or fasting or being a vegan gives you a sense of fulfillment - do it. Do whatever works. I genuinely believe that the ability to believe in something bigger than ourselves is a key component of having peace in our daily lives. Whatever or whomever you decide to honor, make sure that you are consistent and intentional. Don’t waffle, stand firm in your belief system and make sure it works for YOU, not your neighbor, not your friends, but YOU. At the end of the day (I love that saying), we cannot expect to have a clear head, if we are not honoring our bodies and do not have faith in something bigger than ourselves. We cannot expect to have a banging body if we have a cluttered head and don’t believe in someone or something other than our own abilities. We cannot expect to live guilt-free and at peace, if we don’t exercise and continually have thoughts of disharmony and discord. Let’s all do a better job, or at least try to do a better job of aligning all three, honoring all three and ultimately connecting all three to live our best life - today, tomorrow and for as long as the hairs on our heads are numbered.

This is how you throw a party in Mykonos, b**ch! Asking for a friend: Can you cook bacon with a hair straightener? Him: It’s over! Me: What? Why? After all, we have been through – are you just going to leave me? Is it me? Is it someone else? What?!!!
I hate it when I lose stuff at work like pens, paper, phone charger, my will to live…
Him: I meant the movie. Me: Oh, okay… Well, how was it?
I asked a guy to text me when he got home. He must be homeless… I may be shy at first, but once I get comfortable with you get ready for some crazy shit!
Scooter use is on the rise in Atlanta. So are trips to the ER. That almost religious experience when you find the perfect avocado at the supermarket.
You know you left Atlanta when you see people using their lawnmower as a car.

NO COVER
ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19)
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22)
Be generous with your thoughts and feelings today. People may be pleasantly surprised to see you expose your sensitive side. But avoid bear hugging people and telling them how much you love them -there’s a fine line between sincere and phony.
Be open and friendly with people today. They’ll be impressed with your affability and respond in kind. Of course, you may only be putting on an act just to meet guys, but hey, whatever works for you.
TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20)
SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21)
Entering into power struggles with friends won’t be worth it. It could force you to act in ways uncharacteristic of you. Go about your business today and let the rest of the queens scratch each other’s eyes out. This way you’ll emerge with your dignity and eyesight intact.
Don’t entertain your flamboyant side today. There’s a time and place for everything, but bursting into the the party like Richard Simmons high on too many lattes won’t endear you to anyone.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
You could have fun debating with others today if you keep things light. But it could get ugly if you start interjecting your more controversial opinions into the mix. Then that broken jaw you receive could keep you from speaking for a very long time.
Show goodwill by being generous with your time today. Being selfless and dropping what you’re doing to help others is the stuff basic kindness is made of. You may not want anything in return, but you’ll get it in the karma that will rain down on you.
CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)
Outrageous behavior may not mean much to you now, but it could catch up to you in the future. Think of the consequences of your actions before diving in today. That guy you kept touching inappropriately last night could be conducting your next job interview, and he won’t have forgotten.
Juggling the romantic overtures of two different guys is always difficult. You may have that problem today and the choice won’t be an easy one. An embarrassment of riches is nice, but it’s selfish to keep stringing people along. Choose one or the other, but for Pete’s sake, choose before the year ends.
LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22)
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)
You’ll marvel at your own magnificence today and force others to take notice. Guys can be turned off by such shows of ego. Cool it down a bit. It’s good to be in love with yourself, but you don’t often leave room for anyone else to love you.
You may seek your independence today, but it’ll come with a price. Mounting problems or boredom may have you wanting out, but think carefully today before dumping your boyfriend or partner. The easy way out is not always the best or smartest.
VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)
You may have too much happening in your life these days and some things may not be getting the full attention they deserve. This could include people close to you. Whittle things down today and concentrate on the truly important stuff, like the wants and needs of your partner, friends and family.
Today will be a good one to keep your nose out of other people’s affairs. Interjecting yourself into their business makes you look like a buttinsky. So don’t be surprised when they tell you in no uncertain terms to shove off.

WHAT happened was . . . What Happened Was... By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice. I recently went through a breakup. It wasn’t pretty at all, but I thought we had moved on, but now I discover that nude photos of me are circulating on Tumblr. Those were for his eyes only, and I am livid that he would do this. I confronted him about it, and he simply that it didn’t match the hurt I caused him in the breakup. What can I do about this? Can I have them taken down?
Sincerely Inadvertently Exposed Dear Inadvertently Exposed First of all, you need to worry less about your photos ending up on the internet – there is nothing shameful about a photo of your naked body or junk! Next, even though a breakup can be really hard, that is no reason for your anyone to act petty, spiteful, and vindictive – and sharing your photos without your permission is just that! The things that pass between two people in a relationship should remain private even after a breakup. Now, for the part of having Tumblr take the photos down; that’s more complicated than you think. If you flag a photo and can prove that it is yours and claim that is was shared without your consent, then maybe they will take them down. But it may be a lengthy process, and it may prove to be fruitless in the end because the internet is impossible to control.. Let this be a learning lesson that you shouldn’t seek revenge but instead spend some time in understanding why your ex acted this way – and also know that what you may send to someone may end up in places you didn’t expect! My boyfriend is too busy to spend time with me! He works a lot, and he spends a lot of time with his family because they have a few family members that need extra support right now. But that means we hardly ever see each other as opposed to when we met and we hung out all the time. When I confront him, he gets mad and says I don’t understand why he is away a lot. I love him, but I don’t know how long I can go on without his time and support. What can I do to get him back?
Sincerely Take a Moment 52 | 09.19.18
Dear Take a Moment It seems like you are both frustrated about the current situation of the relationship. I bet you that your boyfriend also feels that he lacks support from you! Every relationship goes through rough patches, and right now you are experiencing a hurdle – but there is plenty of potential to reignite the spark between the two of you. You already know what the frustration on both sides is, so the first thing you can do is to fulfill the very need that is causing the frustration. And remember that goes both ways! Next up, is making the time you have together worthwhile and meaningful for the both of you. So instead of quantity, think quality time with your boyfriend. You’d be surprised at how a few good hours in each other’s company can outweigh longer time apart. I think I found my Mr. Right – he is smart, successful, and sexy as hell! I actually think that he is getting ready to propose to me, as he has let little hints and remarks slip about ring size and such. The thing is, the thought of getting married terrifies me! Although he is all right, I just don’t see myself tying the knot just now. I want to be with him, and it’s not because I want to hook up with others, but I am just not there. What is wrong with me?
Sincerely Mr. Not Right Now Dear Mr. Not Right Now Fact is, you are clearly not ready to commit, and it is essential that you communicate that to your boyfriend as soon as possible, so you don’t end up in an incredibly awkward situation if he eventually does pop the question! Start by engaging in a conversation about what he feels about marriage, and let him know how you feel about it as well. Make sure you tell him that you love him, but that you are just not ready for marriage just yet. If he really loves you, he will thwart any plans of a proposal and give you the time – so in a way, this will also help you determine if you indeed have Mr. Right on your hands. NEED ANSWERS? REACH OUT TO US, AND YOU WILL GET THEM! SEND YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS VIA OUR EDITOR AT MIKKEL@PEACHATL.COM.
