The Eventful Fight for LGBTQ Atlantans By Mikkel Hyldebrandt HRC Atlanta hosts numerous fundraising events throughout the year to raise essential funds for the fight for equality. Peach spoke to Malik Brown, member of the Human Rights Campaign’s National Board of Governors, about the importance of these events – and the upcoming Sunday Funday for LGBTQ Equality at Out Front Theatre. Tell us about the work the HRC Atlanta does for the community. HRC is the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization, working to protect and advance the lives of LGBTQ people. Locally, we work to get local proequality candidates elected, partner with local likeminded organizations and engage Atlantans in work that supports HRC’s mission of full equality for all LGBTQ Americans. The Human Rights Campaign is an important national organization that works tirelessly to advance equal rights across the board. What does the Atlanta agency do to promote and participate in this important work? In order for Atlanta to play an even more important role in advancing LGBTQ rights and protections, the community, our families, our friends, our employers, and our fearless allies must come together and keep focus on the end goal. The volunteers at HRC Atlanta work to provide various points of connections to the local community. Some events you’ve been to like the beloved HRC Pride Brunch, Bowling for Equality, Serving for Equality, our tennis event, and the upcoming HRC Atlanta Gala Dinner and Auction on May 4th, 2019, our largest local fundraiser. On the political front, we gather the community to march for justice, lobby and support pro-equality elected candidates by canvass and phone banking for them. In the 2019 midterms, local HRC volunteers donated over 1,200 hours and contacted more than 30,000 proequality voters in GA contacted via text – a massive effort! HRC’s local support extends beyond the Georgia border. Some of our local volunteers worked to elect Senator Doug Jones in Alabama and Beto O’Rourke in Texas and have caravanned to fight the infamously discriminatory HB2 law in North Carolina. These are just a few examples of the broad work the local Atlanta Steering Committee volunteers organize. On March 31 you are hosting a Sunday Funday event at Out Front Theatre. What made you choose to work with the theatre company? 10 | 03.70.19

We’re so blessed in Atlanta to have a robust LGBTQ arts community – it’s not like this in other places. We’re so grateful to the visionaries, talent, and audiences. While HRC has deep relationships through Atlanta’s arts community, Out Front Theatre is the only theatre in the Southeast dedicated to telling the stories of LGBTQ people. Out Front Theatre is among the many local arts and theatre organizations we work with and are looking forward to partner with them again on this Sunday Funday. What is it about partying for a purpose that resonates so well with the Atlanta gay community? Nobody likes partying for a purpose more than the LGBTQ community. There’s so much work left, protecting and advancing the lives of marginalized communities, why not have some fun while giving back to a great cause? How can people get involved with the HRC and HRC Atlanta? There are a number of ways to get involved locally and nationally. As a volunteer donor, sponsor and event attendees. HRC Atlanta is always looking for passionate people to join the fight for equality, so I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to plug in our volunteer opportunities! Please visit www.hrcatlanta.com, @hrcatl or our facebook page: HRC Atlanta to get involved in events, campaigning or leadership roles!

Sunday Funday for LGBTQ Equality is on March 31 at Out Front Theatre Company between 2-5 pm. Buy your ticket ($30 that includes unlimited drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and annual membership or renewal) at hrc.im/sundayfunday.

Surprise makes distinctive R&B spiked folk pop that reaches a fever pitch on fantastic songs such as the hot “Matchbox”, choral a cappella of “Pacific Love”, the other worldly “Mission to Mars”, the queer “Hide” (and its accompanying music video featuring four New Orleans drag queens), and the country cabaret of “Polite Company”. Queer people show up in the most unlikely places in the rock and roll world. Take UK-born lesbian drummer Hayley Cramer, for instance. She pounds the skins for Great Lakes region hard band Pop Evil. So, not only is she the only female member of the heavy quintet, but she also has to live in Michigan. We feel for her. Nevertheless, she makes the most of her situation, drumming up a storm on the band’s eponymous eOne album on songs such as “Colors Bleed”, “Ex Machina”, “Be Legendary” and “Waking Lions”. It would be nice to think that Cramer’s presence also had something to do with the sensitivity found in the song “A Crime To Remember”, and its companion music video, a powerful song about the current state of divisiveness in America. Some bands are queer by association. For example, Death Cab For Cutie front-man Ben Gibbard, who has a lesbian sister, is an outspoken LGBTQ advocate. His electronic-oriented side project The Postal Service was a source of exceptional dance music, including the phenomenal single “Such Great Heights”, which was later covered by lesbian singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick. Death Cab For Cutie has also dabbled with electronic beats in recent years, including on the band’s latest LP, Thank You For Today (Atlantic/Barsuk), which is available on 180 gram clear vinyl. “Gold Rush”, for example, features a sample of Yoko Ono’s “Mind Train”. Other songs to be grateful for include “Summer Years”, “I Dreamt We Spoke Again”, “You Moved Away”, “Northern Lights” and “Near/Far”. 14 | 03.27.19

What music column about queer “musical groups” would be complete without cast recordings? Recorded live, Unbreakable (Ghostlight), with words and music by award-winning gay Broadway

composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa is described as “part musical theater, part oratorio piece” and all gay history. Prominently featuring the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, other performers include Britney Coleman, Marcus J. Paige, Lisa Vroman, as well as Lippa himself. Out actor Christopher Sieber is among the performers you will hear on The Prom: Original Broadway Cast Recording (Masterworks). Created by Bob Martin, Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar, the musical comedy, based on a small-town school controversy involving a lesbian student who was denied the right to bring a female date to the prom, features four selfinvolved Broadway stars who become embroiled in the hullabaloo.

Trending: Spring! by Mikkel Hyldebrandt

It is officially Spring, and with the warmer temps and the feeling of optimism and joy it sparks, comes the slightly more nagging question of ‘what do you wear’? Here are three trends that will take you nicely into the season ahead.

Classic Goes Bolder A classic shirt with a fun flair will both upgrade your business casual, but also transition nicely into a night out with friends or on a date. Don’t be afraid of bolder prints as they can always be toned down by wearing a jacket over it. What’s the Tee? T-shirts are a staple for Spring and Summer, and they are a virtual playground for fun colors, prints, and graphics. This season’s prints are generally less significant while the color and texture of the t-shirts have no limits. Also, fun little decals are on trend and a fun thing to add to any shirt. PULLIN Lobster Patch Tee – PULLIN is available at Boy Next Door Menswear. Image courtesy of Boy Next Door Menswear

Floral Turns Tropical Floral prints for men are going nowhere, and they have even turned slightly more tropical and colorful this season. Don’t shy away from making a bold statement with floral prints and wear top and bottom in the same print. The funnest shirts at the party

Is Schuyler Brown Designing the Funnest Shirts At The Party? By Kevin Assam

Quirky prints. Repurposed fabric. Wearable art. Schuyler Brown is the eccentric founder of clothing brand Seaplane. With stores in Palm Springs, Provincetown, and recently, Key West, Schuyler and his team are on a mission to make the funnest shirts at the party. Why the name Seaplane? Seaplane is the spirit of adventure with friends. It’s all the colors and the sky. It’s a glint of sun on a winter sidewalk. It’s perfect for life in the islands, desert or city. Do you remember the first shirt you ever created? It was a men’s French cuff shirt for my first apparel venture, Fabuloid, launched in San Francisco in 2002. With Fab I learned how to source leftover yardages from other manufacturers. My first shirts were intense, always the best shirts at the party. They were the product that worked best at Fab. They also taught me the importance of going direct. You focus on button up long and short sleeve shirts and tunics. Why shirts specifically? Shirts are forgiving. Through features I perfected, reverse pleats for instance, I created original sizes. Ensuring the right fit is critical and we did. Thanks to the eight unique sizes we developed. We dressed almost 30,000 people to perfect these sizes. I know that Seaplane shirts fit. If customers doubt this I ask, “what do you think is so strange about your body that my shirt won’t work?” There is no such thing as a strange body. Our sizes make people feel normal. It’s not always about someone’s weight. There are other factors to consider like height and broadness. My clothes make people feel happy and that is why customers buy them. Why was it important to manufacture in the USA? My mother’s father was a successful textile manufacturer in North Carolina. His business model was eventually outmoded by the shift to producing overseas. I wanted to create a US made product because I remember how devastating the loss of my grandfather’s mill was for my family. What is the process behind the stories of each shirt’s design? 32 | 03.27.19

It’s all a spark. There is no process. I get inspiration that may not always be sensible and develop outrageously funny stories behind equally hilariously named shirts — Cornish Hen, Death by Hot Dog, German Sense of Humor. Often, the stories are rooted in present day events and references our shared culture. The stories and designs bring people together. What is your 96.7% rule? Endless meetings achieve little. I founded a company to set my own pace. I realized that 96.7% of everything we choose to do can be a total waste of time. This idea is based on countless experiences with things that didn’t work. In marketing, everyone thinks they have a great idea but most of it is trash. Most cost too much without yielding a result. The 96.7% rule trains you to smell a waste of time. When you’re starting a brand, you don’t have much resources and no one will give you money until you’re successful. You have to make sure everything pays for itself or better. What stands out about your store locations? We do best in far flung locations where our customer feels free to express herself — Palm Springs, Provincetown, and recently Key West. The most exciting moment at our newest location was opening night. We had a number of people who were immediately connected to our inclusive message. There was no hesitation. There was a constant flow of great people through the store. Is there diversity in the customer base of Seaplane? Seaplane attracts the broadest range of fans. We believe that our republic is rooted in the experiences of all the cultures that have made contributions. We’re the world’s smartest country thanks to everyone who has come to build their lives here. Our customers understand this and so we celebrate the beauty in every person because we believe that diversity is what makes America so powerful. www.SeaplaneShirts.com

“Fashions You Can Handle”

If you’ve ever been around a fashion-minded individual who has an equal love of Devil Wears Prada and Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion, you’ve probably witnessed them go off about some fashion trend asking everyone around them “can you even handle this fashion!?” Spring is the season that brings the brighter, lighter fashions you’ll wish you had the money to buy before Fall comes around and tells you to buy something completely different. If you find yourself being unable to handle all the fashions, I’ve found people who can help. For me, fashion is what is comfortable for you, and Spring is what comes after Winter (which means you have that Winter weight to play with). I asked a few people about what Spring fashions they suggest for those who are having trouble. A dear friend of mine, and lead Costume Designer on Naked and Afraid, Nadia Stitch told me she finds that comfort in your own body is the best fashion you can wear. However, due to restrictions on public nudity, she recommends wearing what fits your size. Sure, everyone wants to walk around with a Pamela Anderson crop top and G-string, but thinking practically, you can see that no one (including Pamela) looks good in that. Nadia suggests if you are someone who doesn’t want to show too much skin, a Muumuu dress is a perfect choice. They come in many shapeless colors and patterns and fit pretty much any size! If you are on the opposite end and are fit and really want to show off your body, Spring offers many skimpy options as well. My friend Lydia’s daughter, La’Lydia, who just started going to SCAD for fashion and feels she’s seen it all, told me athleisure wear is the best thing for fit people in Spring. It’s stretchy and comfortable, shapes the body, and really lets people around you know that you are working out constantly. You can find this fascinating excuse for not wearing actual clothing in most retail shops. The only drawback is the clothing is polyblend, so it’s not recommended for Christians. Lastly, if you are someone who isn’t a fashion-minded individual, but has serious FOMO for just about anything, here is what you need to know about Spring fashion. Wear bright colors, shorter sleeves, lighter pants (or light sweats if you are packing heat down there). I consulted my personal psychic, Natashka, on what will be the trend for Spring, and she informed me that Cerulean floral prints will make their groundbreaking debut. Stay ahead of the game and shop at your nearest discount department store like Stein Mart! And be sure to take pics so I can live vicariously through your shopping choices. I love the fun, colorful and sometimes tacky fashions that Spring tends to inspire us to wear. Like the season, your fashion should be transitional from the body-hiding, warm clothes of winter, to the body-clinging, barely-there clothes of summer. If you see me rocking my Muumuu, be sure to say hello, and if you see me shopping at a Stein Mart, ask me what’s wrong. Make this season fashion looks your own, or steal someone else’s and claim it as your own! Feel yourself say “I CAN handle this fashion!” (but please don’t ever say it out loud).

Yours in handling fashion,

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22) The dating game can be played anywhere, even at work. Fix your eyes on coworkers who may be looking at you. Hopefully those colleagues will be guys who play for the same team. Otherwise you may have some ‘splainin’ to do.

LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22) Repeatedly striking out with men recently may have you feeling depressed. Cheer up mate, because it’s the dawning of a whole new day. If you act like a desperate jerk, you’re only going to attract desperate jerks, so accentuate the positive and see what happens.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21) ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19) You’ll need to come up with unique ways to approach a hectic workday. Drinking plenty of coffee is one solution, as is exercising before heading to work. But your best tactic could be staying in bed and leaving the mountain of headaches for your coworkers to deal with.

The boss will be in a good mood today, an opportune time to sell him some of your ideas. You’ll be amazed at how easy that will be, and he’ll give you the green light on all of them. But hopefully it wasn’t the Prozac speaking, and he remembers it tomorrow.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21) TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20) You will be turtle-like today, slow moving and meticulous. Too bad the day will start in overdrive and only get faster from there. You’ll have to ramp up as quickly as possible. You know what happens when the turtle tries to move into the fast lane.

Recent overspending may have left your finances in a weakened and pitiful state. Tighten that belt strap today, and get frugal. You may have to return some favors if you want people to help you out, and hopefully some of them won’t involve taking off your pants.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)

Curb your enthusiasm if a friend approaches you with an interesting business proposition today. Look at his plans from all angles but remember that business can be like dating. You may find someone who looks attractive, but you’ll only wind up getting screwed, and not in a way you’d like.

The high energy with which you’ll greet the day will be countered by slow moving coworkers. You won’t have the patience for their sluggishness, and you’ll tell them so. This won’t make them work any faster, and will cast you as the office pariah for the remainder of the day, if not the week.

CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22) Difficulties will arise at work today, but you’ll handle them with the poise of a miracle worker. It’ll be like you have a magic wand and those problems will instantly disappear. Now where was that wand when you needed it last week?

LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22) You’ll try to make a good impression with a new acquaintance today. But your massive ego may have him running in the other direction. Toning it down a bit could have you figuring out how to lure him back, and why it is you have so few friends.

50 | 03.27.19

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18) Despite your best laid plans, today will be one disaster after another. You won’t be able to figure out why that is, but don’t try to fight it. Go with the flow and you’ll get though this difficult day, but expect frustration and a headache that will feel like your brain is caught in a vice.

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) You may have to rely on favors from friends in high places today. Being beholden to others is not a comfortable place for you, because there’s no telling what they’ll expect in return. So keep your integrity intact, and don’t do anything that involves farm animals, a leather thong and a blender.

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice

I

am dating a guy, we are totally in love, and this past weekend we took the major step of visiting his parents. We get to the house after he has prepped me about how the parental unit can be a little conservative, and we go inside to meet them – and I am faced with a man that I have definitely had sex with quite a few time when he was ‘in town on business.’ Yeah, totally hooked up with my boyfriend’s dad (before we got together, of course). So, I’m sitting on this huge bombshell, and I don’t know if I should keep quiet or tell my boyfriend because not saying anything feels like I’m betraying him. Help me, what do I do now? Sincerely Stealth Daddy Relation Dear Stealth Daddy Relation Talk about having the past come to haunt you! The unfortunate and quite sad thing is that this bombshell could have potentially devastating consequences for you – and all you did was hook up with someone unknowing that he was under the radar. Here’s the thing: You say you are very much in love and you are taking next and important steps to deepen your connection, so I guess running away from potential disaster is not an option? Then again; do you want to enter this next phase in your relationship with this massive lie hanging over your head? If you truly love your boyfriend, you should honor him with the truth, because if you are meant to be together, the relationship will endure this too. Who knows, maybe the whole family is sexually open-minded and in on the secret, and you will be able to laugh it off at some point in a distant future? Seeing that this is so complicated, there is also the (less honest) option of simply saying that we all have a past, and that should be put behind us because we are living in the present. Question is if you will ever be able to see past it too.

I

am starting to feel like online dating is more like a chore than fun. I can’t find anyone on the apps that meet my standards, and whenever I find someone, I think is attractive, there is some flaw like a low-paying or no job at all, no car, too far out of town and so on. I’m just not seeing how I can find Mr. Right on a stupid app?! Sincerely App-Solutely Not Dear App-Solutely Not Even though the majority of the dating game has switched to online and apps, that doesn’t mean that it is for everybody! However, there is a sense of you operating within certain limitations when you are looking for that someone special. So many of us remain single because we limit ourselves, and we are just not very good at thinking outside the box. But if you’re looking for something long-term, you should really consider letting go of those limitations, because, guess what, there are a lot more guys when you start getting rid of those factors. So instead of thinking about the right job, the car, and the geographical limits focus on what you both see as the core goal of being in a relationship. After all, that is what really matters when you’re with someone.
