5 Fast Facts About Stonewall National Monument by Mikey Rox
Five years ago this month, the Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village, New York City, was established under President Obama, making it the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to LGBT rights and history. The designated area includes Christopher Park and the block of Christopher Street bordering the park, which is directly across from the Stonewall Inn, the jumpoff of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall riots. Before you drop a pin on the destination during your summer gaycays, learn up with these fun facts. 1. It’s the birthplace of modern queer-rights movement
that were ready to take a stand against police harassment and violence. 2. Stonewall Inn was a mafiarun bar before the queers took over In 1966, the Stonewall Inn Restaurant – which had been located within the inn since the 1950s – closed for renovations due to a fire that devastated the space. The restaurant reopened as a tavern on March 18, 1967, under ownership of the Genovese crime family. The tavern was breaking rules on the sale of liquor, as it had no liquor license, but one officer of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) was reportedly accepting once-monthly bribes in exchange for allowing the tavern to go unlicensed.
Probably the most well-known event in the struggle for LGBTQ+ equality, the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York City brought the issue of queer rights into the spotlight. 10 Black American LGBTQ activists and pioneers to remember this Juneteenth
By permission “First published in Bear World Magazine”
Juneteenth is the unofficial, and hopefully soon-to-be official, holiday in America that commemorates the announcement of the freeing of the last remaining slaves in Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed slaves in America two years earlier in 1865, Texas was slow to move on the proclamation for various reasons, including a low presence of Union troops. Today we celebrate this day, which also falls during LGBTQ Pride month, to remember some of the accomplishments of our Black queer pioneers. While debates about taking down statues and monuments of racist historical figures are taking place, let’s take a look at some Black American trailblazers who could take their place.
Photo Courtesy of Netflix Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992) Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson was a very vocal transgender rights activist. One of the central figures of the historic Stonewall uprisings of 1969, Johnson reportedly “threw the first brick” and is considered by many to be the mother of the modern day LGBTQ Rights movement.
punch”, is seen as the spark that ignited the crowd into action. As a teenager, she joined the Ringling Brothers Circus where she rode jumping horses. From 1955 to 1969, DeLarverie toured the black theater circuit as the MC, and only drag king, of the Jewel Box Revue — the first racially integrated drag revue in North America. She worked as a bouncer for several lesbian bars in New York City in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and also held a number of leadership positions in the Stonewall Veterans Association. She served the community as a volunteer street patrol worker, and as a result, was called the “guardian of lesbians in the Village.” Alongside her LGBTQ activism, DeLarverie also organized and performed at fundraisers for women who suffered from domestic violence and their children.
Along with fellow trans activist and close friend Sylvia Rivera, Johnson helped form Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries (STAR), an organization that provided housing and other forms of support to homeless queer youth and sex workers in Manhattan. She was also a well-known drag performer, performing in the drag troupe Hot Peaches from 1972 through the early 1990s, Photo by Warren K. In 1953, Rustin was found having sex with two men in a parked car in Pasadena. Earlier this year, Gov. Gavin Newsom pardoned Rustin for his arrest, which resulted in Rustin serving 50 days in Los Angeles County jail and having to register as a sex offender. In pardoning Rustin, Newsom acknowledged how LGBTQ people were unjustly punished for their sexuality by U.S. law enforceStormé DeLarverie (1920-2014) Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, biracial, butch lesbian ment at the time of Rustin’s arrest. A frequent attendee of the “Annual Reminder” picket protests, she was usually one of the only women — and the only black woman — present at early LGBTQ rights protests. An early activist in the black feminist movement of the 1970s, Eckstein was involved with the organization Black Women Organized for Action. According to many historians, she viewed the fight for civil rights and LGBTQ rights as intrinsically linked.

From the moment you walk into Pullman Yards, you feel as though you’re becoming part of an underground yet elite experience (similar to how I felt when I first saw Cirque under the big tent). The yard is scattered with various shipping containers that the owners and development team have transformed into coffee huts and “food truck” like stands, featuring various local eats such as King of Pops and Kamayan ATL. The experience begins here, with the front of the main building adorned in a full size window display featuring Van Gogh’s most famous work, “Starry Night”. Open the doors and you’re immediately transported to his universe, beginning with a wall of sunflowers to set the tone for the first room of the exhibit. After greeters check you in, you step into a room filled with various works that span from his more obscure portraits and scenery to his more famous works such as Starry Night and his famous bandaged ear self-portrait. You begin to learn more about Van Gogh that is not in the textbooks. You read about his depression, his irrational behavior, his friendships, his enemies, and his hospital stays… all while still in awe of the success of this artist, after his death. He was troubled to say the least, and in this room you are surrounded by his gravitas. The story of seeing landscapes that were topics of his paintings while being in isolation ring too true for most as we get over the recent hump of Covid-19. Narration and musical accompaniment set the tone for the solemn but passionate energy that surround his work, preparing the audience to move into the projection mapping portion of the experience.

Matt grew up in Loganville and moved to Atlanta two years ago to pursue his writing career – he will graduate in July from Reinhardt University with an MFA in Creative Writing in Poetry. He is a proud leatherman and a contributing writer to LINK at the National Leather Association. One of his favorite spots in Atlanta to go with his long-haired chihuahua, Zeus, is the big hill in Piedmont Park, with the giant oak tree that has a view of the high-rises. Other favorites include sushi, Ray Bradbury, and finding the perfect pizza spot – Fritti’s and Blue Moon so far!

REMEMBERING PULSE BY: CHRIS GONZALEZ
I remember the morning of June 12th as if it was yesterday. The shock, fear, panic, and absolute terror that I experienced as a resident and bartender in the Orlando community not only shakes me to this day, but will forever be engrained in me. You don’t know the feeling until you experience it, but I pray that you don’t.
I felt a nudge from my boyfriend waking me up and heard our phones going off more and more on the morning of June 12th, 2016. I found out about Pulse the same way I found out about 9/11 when I was a child; waking up to the news that there had been a mass shooting and many were believed to be dead. I began watching the TV and noticed the background: “that’s the repair shop on the corner… that’s the Wendy’s down the street… that looks like my Dunkin Donuts…” Sure enough, as the scene began to unfold I saw the now infamous Pulse Nightclub sign lit in the early hours of the morning with blue and red lights flashing in the frame. Members of my community I recognized were running and carrying bodies from the scene of the shooting. I could have been there… I was supposed to be there…
I kissed my partner Will goodbye, and immediately head home. As I drove back into the city from his place in Lakeland, FL helicopters hovered over the Orlando skyline, police cars blocked the exits into downtown and I had to show ID to get to my apartment less than half a mile from the club. News stations were already lining Orange Ave., various individuals were recording the events as they unfolded blocks away. I received a text that friends are gathering at the hotel where families were directed to get information on their loved ones. Many of our friends were at the club that night, and we had no information yet. Reroute to the hotel, and I arrived amidst chaos. Now, I don’t know if you have ever witnessed a hispanic person mourn, but it is by far one of the most gut wrenching scenes to walk into. The sliding doors opened to a hotel lobby filled with nurses, family members, friends, and police officers who I only assume were there to control the crowd. Time goes by and I find my friends. A a doctor from Orlando Health steps up on a chair to address the crowd: “Now some of you… in fact many of you will not hear your loved one’s names on this list, but we are doing our best to gather information as quickly as possible.”
I remember reaching for my phone. 150 different text messages. Hundreds of missed calls. News had spread and it had spread fast. “Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running”; the tweet had made rounds. I had never used the “marked-safe” feature before on Facebook, but it was the fastest way to inform loved ones I was safe before deciding to head home and do whatever I could to help.

Names got listed off one at a time. “You are to either gather at this door for Orlando Health, the far door for Florida Hospital, or another door for “more information”… everyone knew what that meant. As the list came to a close, people began to panic. Days go by and the new daily routine continued. Watch the news, hope to see someone you haven’t heard from interviewed on TV, so you know they are alive. Fellow bartenders were all on edge about returning to work at their respective bars; myself included. I worked at various bars in the area and for months after the massacre I put on my best running shoes… just in case. I carried my sister’s pocket knife she gave me to protect myself… just in case. I checked for the exit signs after walking into every establishment… just in case. I walked through metal detector after metal detector for months at clubs and bars for vigils and remembrance ceremonies… just to make sure. It was the most PTSD inducing year of my life. However…

Dear Peach,
t ople my age do no red that a lot of pe ve co dis ly nt ce ll re I have Pride/Stonewa the true history of understand or know te for LGBTQIA+ en a huge advoca be s ay alw ve ha I month. advancements in ead of the game in ah y sta to nd te d rights an age just don't... t some others my the community, bu nd where PRIDE age really understa my rs he ot lp he I How do significance of it's lp them realize the came from and he history?
Well well well... this is an issue plaguing our community a lot right now. There tends to be a lack of knowledge by people under the age of 30 as to the history of PRIDE and the struggles that those older generations had to endure to make way for us. That is not to say that the older generation can go around and tout their bravado because they come from that generation however... Let's make one thing perfectly clear: Just because you're older and have a different experience does not mean that you can or will discount the experience of those younger than you, or those who have had it "easier". Everyone has their own journey. Which brings me back to the topic at hand. Just because they do not know the history of where PRIDE originated, does not mean that they dont know about the gay struggle. So it would be of good conscience to go ahead and educate those around you. Maybe in conversation you can mention the history that YOU KNOW, and then encourage them to do more research!
LETS. GET. GAY-er. Here's your TOP TEN playlist for the week with songs that have longevity! Each of these songs have lasted for years in the community, and generation after generation sing and dance alongside one another to these anthems. Enjoy this week, and look forward to next week where we feature the new generation of queer artists! -Chris G.

Some relationships inspire me… to be single

It seems as though conflict might arise for you this week, Gemini, but you have to remember that you are in control of how you handle the situation. Do not allow yourself to go off the rails because you overreacted. You are in control and you can focus on another task, some breathing exercises or meditation to help yourself along.
This is an incredibly intense week for you, Cancer. The solar eclipse in Gemini with Mercury in retrograde will make it seem as though it is a time for things to end, but do not cut ties until you feel ready. You are strong and knowledgable. Keep your eyes on the prize!
A dream is a wish your heart makes, Leo. You have wishes and desires that might come true this week if you focus on what those things are. Allow yourself to set goals, aspirations and checkpoints in your work to give yourself a pat on the back. You will reap the benefits of your dedication.
You are going to need your friends this week, Virgo. You have a major project coming up, and you may not know it. You have worked so diligently lately and you are still feeling swamped. So, if you can try and take a day to relax and breathe in some fresh energy before the next few weeks of stress are upon you. You are the forever student this week, Libra. You are looking for something new to invest yourself in, and we think it might be time to update your watch list of movies to documentaries. There are a lot of really great docs-films out there that you can learn from. Find one in your wheelhouse (or one that is so far out there) that you become interested immediately!

The only way to get over one man, is get under another Scorpio. You have had it recently with the failed relationship(s) and you are more than ready to move on, but maybe it is just time for you to have fun without having to worry about commitment. Give yourself room. You need it. Give yourself good sex... you need it too. Love yourself for a while, then see what happens. You might have a summer romance afoot, Sag! You need to keep your heart open to the idea that someone might come into your life and want to sweep you off your feet... at least for the time being. Do some yoga, and when your instructor asks what is needed, ask for some heart openers. You will be amazed at what happens when you open up your heart a bit more. It is ideal to change some unhealthy habits this week, Capricorn. You might put down the cigarettes. You might slow down on the drinking. You might block that one number you keep going back to... Whatever the case may be, this is your week to focus in on yourself and make a change for the better. The time for new beginnings is now, and you got it covered. Get to it. This week is right up your alley, Aquarius! You have the chance this week to really explore your creative side and in doing so, you can express some repressed feelings you might be having. Rather than keeping things bottled up, find a way to make art or see art that is cathartic in nature to you! Release is good. Time for peace, Pisces. This week is about relaxation for you, and you need to take a moment to settle down and reconnect with yourself as well as those closest to you. Might it be time to reconnect with old friends who you've been thinking about? OR, do you need to call your mother/father/sister/aunt/uncle for a quick check in? Do that. Connect with things familiar to you, if possible. It's time to spice up your life, Aries. And we are not suggesting you just listen to Spice Girls; as amazing as that sounds. Try something or someone new this summer Aries. You have a few interests that you have yet to pursue and it might be time to take the leap. You never know what could happen! Your finances are looking good this season, Taurus. The universe is going to bring you profit this season and this week you might have a bit extra somewhere that you can spend on some new digs or something you have wanted for a while. Dont go crazy now! But you can splurge a little bit!
