BEST OF BLACK QUEER CINEMA!!! Special Report by Miko Evans for Meak Productions, Inc.

Though the Pandemic halted a lot of public screenings of independent films in 2020, it didn’t stop the online releases of many new visionary ideas by aspiring producers via Social Media and online paid subscription outlets. This year’s slow reopening of theaters and event venues saw the return of many major film festivals and private screenings of excellent presentations of cinema by LGBTQ filmmakers featuring and / or produced by people of color. In the past, many indie queer films were featured at film festivals, but never got the acclaim that others got due to lack of financial support and in many cases, discrimination and inequity. Here’s a brief list of current films, documentaries and shorts that you should review and support, plus some previously released that you might have missed. Deemed by Meak Productions as Atlanta’s Most Respected and Artistic Dance Films of 2020, BLACK BOI MAJIK is a special visual presentation produced & created by Multi-Talented Artist-Entrepreneur, Lyrik London. Filmed in various locations around Metro Atlanta, this film tackles the topics of Police Brutality, Racism, Sexuality, Oppression and Homophobia from a Black Gay perspective. Through dance, poetry, fashion and music, the film takes you on a energetic journey through the perception of the artist. Choreographed by Lyrik London featuring Music by Moses Sumney.

MAURICE HINES: BRING THEM BACK is a portrait of the charismatic song-and-dance man from his tap-dancing childhood to today. Maurice and friends—Chita Rivera, Mercedes Ellington and Debbie Allen tell tales from his seven-decade career, including Broadway shows, Hollywood films like Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club and about his loving yet difficult relationship with superstar brother Gregory Hines. Ever battling the challenges of being a gay, black man in showbiz, Maurice shares his story with humor and grace. Directed by John Carluccio Executive Producer: Debbie Allen & Charles Randolph-Wright

ALL BOYS AREN’T BLUE is based on the memoir-manifesto by George M. Johnson, designed to encourage queer black boys to uncrate the layers of their masculinity and racialized existence. With the film produced & directed by LGBT Icon, Nathan Hale Williams, and characters portrayed by Bernard David Jones, Dyllon Burnside from POSE, Thomas Hobson, and the Mother of Black Hollywood, Jenifer Lewis, Johnson’s words are brought to life in this dramatic reading of his book. Each represent different stages and a firsthand account of trials, tribulations, and triumphs that have made Johnson into what he is today. FLAMES is an exciting short film written & directed by LGBT Filmaking Pioneers and Power Couple, Deondray and Quincy LeNear Gossfield. Two childhood friends: Ahmad, a streetwise, college-bound scholar on the precipice of a new, bright future, and Sadik, a rehabilitated hooligan grappling with his identity, find themselves alone together before Ahmad’s graduation party in the woods. Soon, unresolved issues and old resentments ignite a forbidden blaze between them that must be doused if Ahmad is to have any chance of escaping the past. This film along with their other short film project: SMOKE, LILLIES & JADE will be shown as a double feature at the Landmark Midtown Arts Cinema during Atlanta’s LGBT Film Festival. BEING BEBE is a documentary feature film about performance, persistence, and purpose, as explored through the iconic life of BeBe Zahara Benet, the first winner of the culture-shaping phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race. This crowd-pleasing film, lovingly directed by Emily Branham, captures the incredible rise and stardom of BeBe, her trials & tribulations. This film is Winner of the 2021 Best Documentary Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival. This film will be shown at the Landmark Midtown Arts Cinema during Atlanta’s LGBT Film Festival. |9

MY 1ST EXPERIENCE AT IGLTA!!!

Story & Main Event Photos by Miko Evans for Meak Productions, Inc.

For More Information about IGLTA, Visit: www.iglta.org & www.igltaconvention.org

This Photo taken by Leandro Aragonez IGLTA’s Fulfillment Coordinator

Tuesday, September 7th began my first experience in attending the 37th Annual Global Convention of the International LGBTQ Travel Association (IGLTA). After ending a successful time with Atlanta Black Pride’s 25th Anniversary, and a short breather on Labor Day, I was ready to embark on this new journey which has been 18 years in the making. When I found out that IGLTA was coming to my home city for the first time, I was SO EXCITED and ready to be a part. I was first introduced to IGLTA online after creating the Meak Productions vision in 2003, and later doing public advertising on MySpace in 2006. At that time, I briefly met online Pablo De Luca, who was an official board member of the organization. Also, I had just met Matt Skallerud online right at the time when he just launched his historic vision, Pink Media. Matt and I never met in person until the convention, which was one of the highlights of my experience. Matt was also the recipient of this year’s IGLTA’s Hanns Ebensten Hall of Fame Award (Well earned and deserved). IGLTA is the world’s leading network of LGBTQ+ & Allied tourism businesses, providing free travel resources and information while continuously working to promote equality and safety within LGBTQ+ tourism worldwide. convention is designed to connect gay, lesbian and gay friendly travel and tourism suppliers and buyers through its hosted buyer and scheduled appointment program, numerous educational workshops and networking receptions. This was the 1st public event for the organization since the pandemic started, which they was scheduled to be in Milan, Italy last year.

The atmosphere was like a family reunion. Many colleagues and delegates haven’t seen each other in person since being on lockdown during the pandemic. There was A LOT of LOVE, genuine networking and connection in the room, starting with the pre-receptions presented by Pink Media (On Tuesday), and the Invite Only Media Reception on Wednesday. While various workshops and panels were presented throughout the week, which were great and informative, some of the biggest highlights for me are: 1. The awards given to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (The Pinnacle Award), accepted by Atlanta’s 1st LGBTQ Affairs Director, Malik Brown; and The Pathfinder Award given to Atlanta Black Gay Pride, accepted by Avian Watson of the Vision Community Foundation and the Pure Heat Community Festival. 2. The Opening Reception at the Georgia Aquarium, which featured the best in Atlanta’s Drag Performers. 3. The Media Networking Event, which is a way for media partners and members to exhibit to other attendees. All Media representatives (members and attendees) were on display to present their services to the Travel Industry. And Meak Productions and Peach Media was displayed very well. 4. VOYAGE, the official fundraising event of the IGLTA Foundation, held at the Delta Air Lines Museum, was the BIG Highlight for me. The Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau along with the Atlanta Airport Business District were displayed, along with a beautiful tour of the museum, Live entertainment, unlimited food, drinks sponsored by Barcardi and unlimited networking. 5. The Closing Workshop session and Closing Reception: This was a touching and celebratory ending to a successful convention. A special tribute to Sept. 11th was shown during the closing session, which had many of us in tears, and the closing reception was a FABULOUS Dance Party, which I was able to get my groove on with my new Business Connections. 6. My Interview with Pink Media. This was a long time coming for both Matt and myself. We’ve been following each other online since he started his vision. The fact that this was our 1st meeting in person was the icing on the cake for me. A beautiful, business network connection that started online during the early part of the millennium became full circle during this interview. Since officially joining the organization Spring of this year, I can truly say it is one of the best investments I’ve ever made for the future of Meak Productions. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL IN MILAN, ITALY NEXT YEAR For The 38th Annual Convention of IGLTA in late October 2022!!!

GAYS ON FILM: Queer representation in 2021 and beyond by Scott King On his popular podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend,” O’Brien was interviewing Sean Penn. He was talking to Penn about his Oscarwinning role in the 2008 film “Milk.” The biopic won two Academy Awards and chronicles the life of the LGBTQ+ civil rights pioneer and martyr Harvey Milk. O’Brien was about to make a very nuanced point about the quality of the film and something very specific that he liked about Penn’s performance. Penn interrupted him to say, “That’s interesting because today, almost certainly, I would not be permitted to be cast in that role.” Tough shit, wife beater. Also, nothing could be further from the truth. Just last month it was announced that Jared Leto will play Andy Warhol in an upcoming feature film. Just last year, Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth, two straight actors, played two middle-aged gay men in a film with Oscar buzz and the works. In the film, “Supernova,” one of the characters comes down with dementia, because, as we all know, you can’t have a movie about queer people if they’re not sick, miserable, victimized or dead. So what do these beautiful, artsy, gracefully acted feature films tell us about the state of film, television, show business, and queer

representation? It shows us that Hollywood is still a pretty safe place for straight white men to rule the world. They can tell stories about us without losing their straight cis privilege –r their profits. We can cast one or two queer actors in these lead gay roles. That would help. But it would still be Hollywood telling the story, our story. It still won’t win an Oscar unless somebody dies or gets sick or is miserable. Or, if in the third act, white people solve racism. What does queer representation and visibility really come down to? Is it optics? Is it Oscars? No. Not exactly. It’s power. Sean Penn’s glib assumption that straight actors can’t play gay roles at a word, while inaccurate, really comes down to one thing: Fear. Fear of losing a job. Fear of losing power. Fear of getting canceled for those 30-year-old stories of how he tied Madonna to a chair when they were divorcing and threatened to cut off all her hair. It’s the fear white men have of no longer being able to cast themselves over and over again as Geppetto, pulling the strings of entertainment on the world stage and screen. It’s the fear of the end of a hundred years of industrial monopoly and cultural hegemony. It’s Jerry Seinfeld’s fear that he might get called out, justly, for having cast the first season of his talk show as a conversation between him and 12 other straight white men. No Jerry, funny is not funny. Funny

is a social construction. So is quality. So is pathos. When the same type of person runs all of the networks and all of the advertisers and all of the television shows, you have a corner on funny. Someone Latino or queer or female will automatically seem like “other” and outside the construct of funny. This isn’t political correctness. This is common sense. Why people walk up to Amy Schumer and tell her Amy, you’re my favorite female comic. Same thing, but with a queer and or black twist, with artists like Matteo Lane or Wanda Sykes. White people run the studios. They’ve run the companies that sponsor TV shows. They write the scripts. They approve and re-write the scripts. They’re in charge of casting. They run production. They publish the newspapers and magazines that review the movies and TV shows the other straight white men have already greenlighted. But no more. There’s been, like, a revolutionary 10 percent shift in the past 30 years. Now 10 percent of the heads of studios and production companies are non-whites or nonmale or non-straight. Ryan Murphy is a household name. It’s a little bit. More progress will come. I’m hesitant with the word revolution because it’s overused when two things happen. When queer women and people of color take the reins, and also when the sensibilities of these groups saturate the consciousness of wellintentioned white men. It’s already happening, but it’s going to take another generation or two for these groups to stop wearing the label of otherness. Bearing the label of look at us let’s congratulate ourselves on

this story we’re telling about black or queer people. Let’s win an Oscar by producing a film about a black man who grew up in the ghetto and struggled with his sexual orientation. At the end of the film, let’s have him drive down from Atlanta to Florida because he really needs a hug. That’ll make us feel real good. The main goals of this attempted progression of culture and cultural politics, of this “political correctness,” which is really just an attempt to right the wrongs of an unjust politic, the politic of a world where white people rule EVERYTHING, are these: diversity, representation, and equality of opportunity. When more out gay actors get to play leading roles, whether gay or straight, this means more gay people who are bona fide movie stars. This doesn’t just mean the world gets treated to another rich and famous gay person. This means the masses will have more visible and successful gay people to look up to. It means more gay normalcy and integration. And it means fewer films where gay people are dead or terminally unhappy. I want gay movie stars. I want dumb gay romantic comedies. I want good gay romantic comedies. I want lesbian buddy films that aren’t subtle. I want movies about queer people that don’t win Oscars. Is that so much to ask? I guess we’ll see.

“Scott King writes and lives in midtown Atlanta. He likes to go for long, long walks with no destination in mind. If you see him out walking, please say hello.”

By Marci Alt Photo: Meak Productions etc etc? Desperate Dave Because we all need a wise, Lesbian BFF!

Dear Lesbo I really don’t like to get into the local political scene however I am very compelled to start. My question is should I or should I just keep my big queen mouth shut? Questionable QUEEN Queen Really I think you already know the answer to this question....Put on your very glittery sequence dress, your CUM FUCK ME PUMPS and dance right in!!! Really if more people were actually involved instead of on the couch or dance floor maybe we would have GAY PRIDE in Atlanta this year. We are a community and all our voices should be heard. Lesbo Dear Lesbo I have been dating this beautiful man for 3 weeks now and he still hasn’t brought me to his home. I am scared that he is already in a relationship or worse he might be straight. My question is, how do I find out about his personal life, i.e. home, work.....

Desperate, Do you realize it’s 2021! Anything anyone wants to find out is right at your fingertips. All you need to do is type his name in the search box and anything and everything will be there. Or you can just do it the true old fashioned way and ask him. If he is a straight up guy I am certain he will be more than happy to tell his tale. I have found most people love to talk about themselves.. Don’t be shy Desperate, hopefully you’ll be at his place soon enough. Lesbo I want to thank my readers and everyone that keeps sending me these questions. I love to answer them. I know that you may not like my answers, however i Promise I will answer. I also want to thank Peach ATL for always standing by me and allowing me to be me. Keep it strong ATLANTA till next time. Lesbo

7 Award-Worthy LGBT Films (That You Probably Haven’t Seen) to Cozy Up to This Fall by Mikey Rox

Over network TV? Tired of Hulu? Seen everything on Netflix? Dig a little deeper to find meaningful, surprisingly well executed but little-known LGBT films that you might have missed over the years. 1. “The Lavender Scare” A documentary detailing the homosexual witch hunt sanctioned by the U.S. government in the 1950s (made possible by then-Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communism campaign), “The Lavender Scare” follows several subjects, including lifelong LGBT activist Frank Kemeny, as they tell their harrowing stories of humiliation, blackmail, and dismissal of civil service for what amounts to nothing more than keeping their private lives private. This eyeopening doc took home awards at film fests in Atlantic City, N.J.; Fargo, N.D.; Hartford, Conn., Kansas City, Mo.; and Memphis, Tenn.

sense for “Close-Knit,” a story focused on the beating heart of a blended-by-circumstance family. The film takes issue with the trans plot line as an aside, welcomingly, and rather pays attention to the bond formed between a young girl and her uncle’s male-to-female partner during the absence of her oft-missing mother. The film, directed by Naoko Ogigami, took home the top prize at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy; Best Narrative Feature at the Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival; and the Teddy Jury Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. 3. “Families Like Yours”

Underwritten by Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Wells Fargo, and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, “Families Like Yours” showcases through candid interviews the challenges of raising an LBGTQ+ family in America – which, for all intents and purposes, is not unlike raising a “traditional” family in 2. “Close-Knit” America (the whole point of this documentary) – as it introduces You might not expect one of the us to the LGBTQ+ men and most progressive trans films ever women called mommy and made to emerge from Japan – daddy by their children, including especially considering that’s it’s out actor Denis O’Hare, husband the first trans film to come from Hugo Redwood, and adopted the country ever – but it makes son Declan. The film screened

at Fort Lauderdale’s OUTshine Film Festival following its premiere in New York City, presented by Deutsche Bank, in 2017. 4. “God’s Own Country” There’s a lot to like about Britain’s “God’s Own Country” – before you even sit down to watch it. If its Sundance Film Festival cred doesn’t attract you – it was the only UK-based movie to feature in the World Drama category the year it premiered – perhaps its 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes will do the trick. Drawing comparison to “Brokeback Mountain” (which, admittedly, is an easy association for our community

for any material portraying rough sex in a rural setting between two partners who don’t consider themselves “gay”), “God’s Own Country” at least does right where the Oscar nominee went wrong. 5. “After Louie” Artist and ACT UP activist Sam (Alan Cumming), who lived through the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis, is disillusioned by Millennials’ seeming disregard for the disease as they solicit casual sex through social media with seemingly no regard for the consequences while simultaneously resting on their political laurels at a time when activism is quite necessary. But

just when Sam thinks there’s no hope for our LGBT future in the hands of 20-somethings, along comes young, pretty Braeden to revive his cold, dead heart (figuratively, of course). IndieWire’s Jude Dry called it “one of the most exciting queer films.” Doubling down on that sentiment, Los Angeles Blade’s John Paul King said, “”After Louie” may well be the most important gay movie you see in your lifetime.”

haven’t found “Heartstone” yet, track it down), and “Rift” is no exception. This thriller/horrormystery finds ex-boyfriends Gunnar and Einar holed up together in BFI (that’s Bumfuck, Iceland for the uninitiated) haunted by their past and a few bumps in the night. The film won the Artistic Vision Award at L.A. Outfest, and it’s available now to subscribers on Amazon Prime.

6. “High-Low Forty” Long-estranged brothers Billy and Joe reconnect during a road trip back to their native Texas to be by their dying father’s side. The sibs haven’t seen each other in a while because after Billy was discharged from the Army, he beat feet to Los Angeles, the reason for which plays out over the long ride home (though you’ve probably already guessed why). Directed, written by and starring Paddy Quinn, “High-Low Forty” won Best Narrative Feature at the GI Mikey Rox is an awardwinning journalist and LGBT Film Festival in San Diego. lifestyle expert whose work has been published in more 7. “Rift” than 100 outlets across the Iceland – if you’re not aware world. Dear Peach,

some goals in mind year of my life with xt ne the o int ally set ing I am go know how I can re ve, however I dont hie ac to now. nt ht wa I rig t tha in the world of the uncertainty those goals with all the and make this year to stick to my goals Any advice on how best year possible?

Goals are simply dreams with a deadline. So, first we need to restructure the way we think about goals. If we have long term and short term goals, be realistic about how you can achieve those goals and what an appropriate amount of time to do that is. If you push yourself too hard and dont achieve it, you are going to beat yourself up. That is not fair to you or your dreams. Habits take 26 consecutive days to form as well, so if you have a goal in mind, then see if you can work progressively towards that goal for 26 days straight. If you can do that, then you can continue down the path of success by focusing on the task at hand. Lastly, do not forget that just because you dont achieve something that a peer, coworker, friend, etc. does, doesnt mean that you are worth any less than them. Everyone has their own path in their own time.

Set your goals, and go for them! You are a true Virgo. You enjoy a challenge and you thoroughly enjoy proving other people wrong when they say that you "cant do something". So this is your week to set your goals in mind and celebrate the workhorse in you. If you can truly set your mind to it this time around, then you can do anything. This is an excellent time for you to align with your passions and creativity, Libra! Because of the world's current state of affairs, you have been distracted by trying to make sense of everything around you. But what you have to realize is that not everything has to make sense all the time. Focus on yourself this week and take a break from the analytical. You are about to embark on a week long journey that can be life altering for you. You have your vices, as everyone does... however, this week your urges to fall back into old habits are especially strong. Do not fall for it. You have gotten out of this once before, so why are you going down that path again? When you notice something triggering you, breathe and come up with a plan of attack to stay the course. You are a natural teacher, Sagittarius! This week is the perfect time for you to find a mentee and take them under your wing. You have been pushing forward for so long on your own, that you can finally show someone else what true determination and ambition looks like! Push forward with the fight to help others and you will be rewarded in abundance!

You are a true workaholic and this week will definitely show that! You have a lot of plans coming up and you have even more deadlines to meet. This week, lay everything out in front of you and rather than being overwhelmed, be grateful. You truly love what you do, so how can you restructure your thinking to enjoy every aspect of it and complete these tasks to the best of your ability? You've got this!

You have this urge to learn something new this week, Aquarius. What could it be? Maybe its a new art form. Maybe its something that will help to beautify your home? Take whatever you can this week and run with it as your curiosity and desire for learning take control this week. It will not always be there so take advantage of it this week! Get rid of what doesnt make you happy this week, Pisces. That includes people too! You thought it immediately when you started reading this horoscope so you need to make sure that you are happy FIRST AND FOREMOST. Noone else will dictate your love of life, and noone should ever take that from you... so what changes do you need to make? You are going to feel incredibly aggressive this week, but you need to breathe in order to maintain control of the stressors around you. If you do not, people are going to feel your wrath. Over the next few weeks you are going to be tested to your limits by others, but the universe is preparing you for what is to come. You need to get moving this week, Taurus. You have been feeling a bit lethargic lately and because of that you have missed some fairly important deadlines. This is the time for you to realize that unless you get moving, things are not just going to fall into your lap. If you dont put the pedal to the metal, then you are going to fall flat. It is time for you to act like your wild and crazy half, Gemini. You see others around you settling down and slowing down but you want things to speed up and continue to push you forward. Dont let others dictate your life, and you are going to be in for one wild ride here soon!

You are going to feel very close to home this upcoming season, Cancer. While you think that you are going to be traveling a lot for your own pleasure, you might be traveling home to make sure things are okay. Things could be on rocky ground back home, but you got this. You are your family's rock and you are going to save the day, yet again. Slow down and let people understand where you are coming from, Leo. Because you are feeling extra overwhelmed lately, you are having trouble communicating. So instead of feeling frustrated that others are not understanding you, why not slow down and see if they can understand you at a slower pace? It might make all the difference.
