Back With a Beating Heart

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Joining Hearts invites Atlanta to join their Journey of Love with a weekend July 15-17 packed full of amazing events. The main attraction – the much-anticipated pool party at Piedmont Park – is back at full capacity this year. Peach spoke to Joining Hearts board president Jerry Henderson about what to expect at this year’s pool extravaganza, aptly named When Love Takes Over, and what the journey has entailed for the organization.

Last year’s pool party was at limited capacity, Saturday, When Love Takes Over, featuring but this year you are back in full force. What Enrico Meloni, and the Tea of Hearts T-Dance on Sunday, featuring Manny Lehman. can attendees expect from the party? Joining Hearts’ Host Committee works hard to plan and execute such a large event that has sold out in the past several years. This year, the organization carefully streamlined its event to make it efficient and fun. Here is a little sneak peek into the event as you will be greeted by smiling faces and the Love Lounge for our VIPs, patrons, and sponsors, where we will transform the space into magical scenery that coincides with the theme. In years past, we had only the main event, but with last year’s success, we added a Tea of Hearts to the mix again, so we have three signature events for the weekend: The opening event Friday, Falling in Love, featuring Liza Rodriguez, the main event

We have our Heart of Hearts in the fall: Back in Love, followed by our Wishlist: Love Is A Gift, where we do our check presentation. If you cannot attend the party, how can you support Joining Hearts otherwise? There are several ways to get involved in the organization: volunteer, host, or become a This is a party, but ultimately it raises funds patron or a sponsor, so we can focus on the to support Joining Hearts’ mission of helping task at hand by raising much-needed funds to those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. Our initiative this year is for our guests to donate just $35 for our 35th anniversary and reach a new milestone in our giving journey. Joining Hearts has been fulfilling its mission since 1987. Can you share some of the incredible milestones you have achieved over four decades? This year is significant, as we have reached a milestone in our giving journey as a 100% allvolunteer organization that has donated over $2.7M since 1987. We have adapted our way of doing things as an organization by expanding our mission a few years ago to adjust to the current HIV/AIDS needs, including launching a new website this year. Our goal is always to take charge as the leading nonprofit that consistently does pulse checks

Pop icon, singer-songwriter Betty Who released an anthemic new single, “Blow Out My Candle” via BMG. Just in time for Pride, an accompanying music video that made its broadcast premiere on MTV Live and MTVU is also out now. “Blow Out My Candle” is a triumphant return to form for Betty Who. On the ‘80s-inspired song, Betty channels her infectious spirit with a newfound level of insight and introspection. The track is a catchy ode to perseverance, with a chorus that activates the dancefloor: “You can blow out my candle, but you you’ll never put out my fire.” The video, directed by Tyler Cunningham, made its broadcast premiere on MTV Live and MTVU and finds Betty embracing the ‘80s aesthetic as she dances around in a Jamie Lee Curtis-inspired workout leotard, sweatband, and high socks as she sings about self confidence and love. “It’s been a long couple years for all of us. I spent my time off learning to bake (of course)…and incessantly thinking all day and all night about what kind of music I wanted to return with. “Blow Out My Candle” is the story I want to share most. The feeling I held onto in the darkest moments of the last couple years. I hope it gives you the confidence and motivation it gives me,” says Betty Who about the single.

Keeping with the theme of the song, she also has also released a Betty Who candle, with a percentage of the proceeds going to GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization The candles are available for purchase here. Showing yet another dimension of Betty’s versatility, she is making her reality TV debut by hosting Amazon Studios’ new dating show The One That Got Away. Produced by Amazon Studios and Fulwell 73 and executive produced by Elan Gale (FBoy Island, The Bachelor franchise), The One That Got Away premieres on June 24th. The show is a time-traveling, experimental dating series where six people searching for their soulmates are given the chance to explore a lifetime of missed connections as, one by one, people from their pasts enter through “The Portal” to surprise them and take their shot at love. More via Deadline HERE More to come on Betty Who!

“BlowOut My Candle” – written by Betty and co-produced with longtime friend and collaborator Martin Johnson (“The Night Game/Boys Like Girls”) – is the perfect primer to announce a new chapter for Betty. Betty has also partnered with the nonprofit organization in its voting registration efforts for the month of Pride. Betty previously performed at the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2019 and is a frequent collaborator with the nonprofit, as well as with The Trevor Project, whom she worked with on previous tours. GLAAD has declared this Pride month as a month of action and is rallying with the community to make sure everyone is registered to vote in the midterm elections. Betty Who is also working in tandem with GLAAD to fight against the anti-trans and anti LGBTQ legislation by getting record numbers of people to get out and vote. You can pledge to vote here. In partnership with GLAAD, the song will serve to be a vehicle for change and drive awareness for the GLAAD Vote with Pride program that looks to increase voter turnout.

Dear Peach, I’ve had a tough life dealing with self esteem issues and anxiety when out in public. I can’t help but think that people are constantly looking at me or judging me for the way that I look, sound, act, etc. How can I manage that anxiety while also working on developing my self esteem to feel more confident going out and just enjoying the moment?

Everyone around you has self esteem issues! To be honest, you probably think that some folks around you have the utmost confidence in themselves but realistically they are just as broken inside as you claim to be… if not more. Sometimes people cover their insecurities up with gym obsession, some cover it up with humor, and others hide it amongst their work knowing that they are good at something and hiding how they really feel. But you have an advantage because you already know that you have the insecurities and you can refocus that energy and turn it into your strength. If you can take the time to step back and see you’re true worth then you are going to feel so much happier! Always consider how the day went positively and what you did that was awesome as opposed to what you didn’t do or need to improve upon.
