Loving Victor For the Last Time

By Chris Azzopardi Photos courtesy of HULU

For now, at least, it’s the end of “Venji.” Many watched Victor (Michael Cimino) and Benji (George Sear), the romantic heart of “Love, Victor,” to find a much-needed love rush amid pandemic weirdness. The series launched on Hulu in 2020, just months into lockdown when we were all looking for some lighthearted teen romance (for some, to see themselves; for others, to revel in nostalgia), and now, after three seasons, the spinoff of the 2018 film “Love, Simon” is stepping off the ferris wheel. That is, until the very fans who made it the gay talk of Twitter inevitably insist on a Venji film. In a recent chat, Cimino and Sear talked about their next possible collaboration (could we finally get a recorded song?), what mementos they kept from the set and whether they’ll continue to represent the LGBTQ+ community in future roles. I don’t know how many tears you shed during the shooting of this, but based on the face you’re making right now, Michael, it looks like you shed some. Michael Cimino: Yeah, I definitely cried quite a bit. I love this show, and I love this cast. It’s been such an amazing experience. And yeah, it was emotional, dude. I love these people. So even though

it’s not a goodbye, it definitely felt that way, especially in the moment. And it was a goodbye to Victor, and that in itself was really hard, just [saying] goodbye to Victor. I loved playing Victor. George Sear: It’s such a big part of your life, you know? It was emotional. Especially as a Brit, like us being much more [transparent] with our emotions. That final night everybody was just so… there was just so much love there. Yeah, a lot of tears. What was your first impression of each other when you met, and how has your relationship changed from the first shoot to the last? Cimino: The first time I met George was in the cam read, and I knew that George was the guy. Immediately I was like, “This is our guy, for sure.” Our relationship has just grown since then, and I would consider George one of my really good friends, one of my closest friends, and I know I can call George and chat to him about anything. Sear: A hundred percent. Cimino: I don’t think that you get that often, to be honest. Sometimes you become part of a cast, and you’re not really vibing with everyone, but with this

I keep saying this, but [that’s] because it’s true. Victor has inspired me to just be who I am. And he has this big speech at the end about bravery, and that has been a really incredible inspiration [to] me for how I navigate life.

cast, I love everyone so much. Sear: Yeah, honestly. From the get-go there was definitely, like you said… it felt really right. So I was really grateful that I got to be a part of this experience. Everybody was lovely, but Michael was just so genuine and wanted everybody to feel good on set and brought such good energy. I do feel like our friendship really has evolved from Season 1 till now, and through jamming together. So much growth in this time, and sharing that with you bonded us.

Sear: There’s been so much that I’ve taken away from Benji: his confidence, and this season learning that he wasn’t always confident, and he had these struggles, and he was doing a lot of work on himself. It was kind of cathartic to play that, because there’s just parallels between things I’ve gone through. But then, other things, like the love of coffee. They gave me barista training and now I’m obsessed with that. When they got me in the studio to do that, a song in Season 2, and that just was so fun.

Have you delved into Venji fan fiction? I mean, it would be hard not to; there’s a lot of it on the internet. Sear: I see a lot of memes and things like that on Twitter. Cimino: You can’t really describe it. George Cimino: Yeah, I haven’t dived into the fan would call me when his car broke down, fiction. We should actually, George. We and we had to push it... could do a day where we link up, and we just read fan fiction online. Sear: A hundred percent. And he lent me his truck for, like, over a month. Sear: We should actually. We need some direct links. You mentioned music, George, and you’re both musically inclined, and fans are So a very shameless fan had this question really hungry for a collaboration between for Michael, which is: Out of all the people the two of you, a recording that we can that Victor has kissed, who is Michael’s just enjoy for the rest of our lives. Is that favorite kisser? something you talk about? Cimino: You know, listen… I think… Cimino: Yeah, actually, I don’t know why we haven’t talked about it. Sear: Don’t be shy. Sear: That’s something we definitely Cimino: Yep, tread carefully. Um, I think should [do]. We have played music everyone’s great in their own regard. And together before. We used to host these jam sessions where everyone would switch instruments, and it was very fun. Maybe we can have a go at writing a little something. Funny that we both have our guitars, like, next to us [right now]. Let’s do it now. What key? You’ve spent three years with these characters. What have you learned about yourself by playing them? Cimino: Dude, I feel like Victor’s inspired me so much just to be brave, and I know

I feel like that’s all I can say ’cause any way that I answer this question, I’m so Cimino: No, no! I don’t know what you’re screwed. talking about! I took some stuff from Victor’s room that I felt like I needed to Sear: But there is an answer! have. Do you think that you have interest in playing other LGBTQ+ characters in the future? Cimino: Yes, for sure.

Sear: I got this bracelet that I love, and it’s sort of a memento of the character. And I also got the… I’m just looking at it over here. It’s the tamper, for the espresso, where [Benji’s] tamping the coffee. I got Sear: Definitely, yeah. the tamper for that. So, I use that every day ’cause I make coffee at home every Cimino: I’ve had some interest in some day. stuff that is LGBTQ-skewing. I’m never going to shy away from a role because it’s If a “Love, Victor” movie comes your way, LGBTQ-skewing. I think that’s really dumb. would you say yes to it? It’s a part of our world, and people that Cimino: Yeah. are part of the LGBTQ+ community need to be seen. Sear: Definitely. Yeah, yeah. A hundred percent. Love to work with Michael again, Sear: I’m kind of back to the drawing board, and everybody else. auditioning quite a bit. And if a good part is a good part, and it’s a good character, Chris Azzopardi is the Editorial Director of then yeah. Of course. Absolutely. Overlooking Georgia By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Hiking has long been a favorite Atlanta pastime, and with many trails strewn across the state, it is also a great way to explore Georgia. It’s a great workout and an excellent way to gain a new perspective on things, both literally and mentally. Here are some of the favorite trails and summits that will give you stunning overlooks where you can catch even more spectacular views. Arabia Mountain Top Trail The trail gives you much to explore as you hike through the massive, exposed granite fields, discover basins filled with rare plant forms, and take in stunning views from the top. This pretty moderate hike is about 1.3 miles long, and you are allowed to bring your four-legged friend with you. Sweetwater Creek State Park You’ll find Sweetwater Creek State Park just outside the city limits, with several trail options for hiking and biking. Along the hike, you get to experience the amazing creek (where you can also cool off on those hot summer days), ruins, and plenty of scenic abundances. You can choose moderate to more strenuous hikes (between 2-5 miles) and bring your dog to the trail. Bartram Trail The Bartram Trail to Rabun Bald is the second-tallest mountain summit in Georgia, so naturally, you can catch some stunning views here. The trail is three miles roundtrip with a pretty steep climb. The relatively moderate hike will give you moments of lovely serenity as you climb the summit – and the view from the top is nothing but breathtaking.

Fort Mountain State Park Summit Trail This beginner-friendly trail offers a mysterious stone wall, a historic lookout tower, and gorgeous views of the Cohutta Wilderness and the Georgia State Parks. The 1.5-mile loop trail offers sweeping views of the surrounding plains and mountains from the observation deck – and yes, it’s dog-friendly. Yonah Mountain Trail This moderately challenging trail delivers one of North Georgia’s best and most popular hikes and highlights a walk through the boulder-filled landscapes filled with vibrant flowers. The hike is a pretty steady climb, but once you reach the summit, the stunning views from the exposed rock outcrops make it worth all the effort. Dog-friendly for an agile pup. Tallulah Gorge State Park This is one of Georgia’s most scenic parks, with rushing waterfalls, steep canyons, and serene riverbanks. There are numerous trails of various difficulty, and you get to experience hanging bridges, waterfalls, and of course, stunning views. Depending on the trail you pick, it can be dog-friendly, but some require a permit where dogs are not allowed due to the trail’s difficulty.

Giving Back With a Pack By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Even though we’re mid-Summer, thousands of kids are gearing up for the time of year when they return to school to continue their educational journey. But for some, filling up a backpack with necessary school supplies is a challenge – and that’s where For The Kid’s fundraiser, Backpack In The Park, comes into play. Because with the help of the Atlanta community, the all-volunteer board aims to raise funds for 5,000 backpacks. Peach spoke to board president Stacy Brown about the event and how he plans to fill and distribute the thousands of backpacks.

This is the first year back with an inperson event, which everyone is excited about. What do you have up your sleeve for this highly anticipated event? First, we can’t wait to connect with the community again. We always have something up our sleeve, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to Magnolia Hall! A highlight is always the silent auction, and because we’re in person, we have invited auctioneer Dean Crownover back to do a live auction with some fabulous items. And of course, we have lots of fun and games for everyone! After Toy Party, it is evident that Atlanta is craving to come out and support For The Kid. The mission of For The Kid In All Of Us is to raise funds for children in need all across metro Atlanta. Can you speak a little about your goals for this event? Our goal this year is to provide backpacks to 18 plus beneficiaries in Metro Atlanta by 20 | follow us @ peachatlmag

providing 5,000 backpacks to elementary, middle, and high school kids that don’t have the necessary means to go back into the school year ready to learn. A backpack filled with school supplies takes a lot of pressure off the parents and the teachers in the classrooms - and, of course, the kids get to enjoy the start of the school year with all-new supplies. Backpack In The Park has raised funds for backpacks since 2006. Can you share some of the incredible milestones you have achieved with this event over the years? As a whole, FTK has raised over 36,000 backpacks to date. It takes an average of 150 volunteers to make Backpack in the Park successful every time. Besides helping at the event, we need volunteers to help unload backpacks at the warehouse and help distribute the backpacks to our beneficiaries. Over the 16 years, we have www.peachatl.com

the event? Yes, you can always bring backpacks to the event - in fact, we love them. If you want to bring a backpack filled with school supplies, you can go to our website - forthekid.org - or to our Facebook page to see the list of supplies that need to go in it. If you can’t attend the event, what other ways can you support For The Kid In All Of Us? You can always help with a donation. The funds donated will support our programs around Back In The Park and Toy Party. We are also always looking for volunteers that can help out before, during, and after events. And finally, if you want to get more involved, please consider becoming a board member. We are a working board, but we also create lasting friendships and connections. You donate, become a volunteer, or apply to become a board member at forthekid.org.

Amicalola Falls Trail From the tallest waterfall in Georgia to some of the most breathtaking mountain views, this two-mile loop trail is a top contender for a hike deeply immersed in nature. You hike to the crest of this beautiful, cascading waterfall that drops 730 feet over multiple tiers while catching unbelievable views from the top. You descend alongside the waterfall via stairs and bridges, making this trail somewhat unfit for dogs. Stone Mountain Trail Hiking up and down Stone Mountain is quite an accomplishment, but if you want to get even more than the gorgeous views from the top, we recommend you combine the walkup with the Cherokee trails. This scenic six-mile hike is definitely on the more difficult side, but you get so much more Georgian scenery with this one – and the trail is not nearly as crowded as the summit. Due to park regulations, no dogs are allowed.

Pine Mountain Trail A drive to North Georgia near Cartersville gives you outstanding views of Allatoona Lake from a beautiful mountain summit. You hike through a stream-filled forest before you reach the summit, where the woods clear to reveal views of the lake, Stone Mountain, and Kennesaw Mountain. The 4.5-mile hike is relatively moderate in intensity and is perfect for bringing your dog. Providence Canyon State Park Also known as the ‘Little Grand Canyon of Georgia,’ this place is truly remarkable. Sure, it’s nowhere near as large as its Arizona sibling, but it is still a place like no other in Georgia. The park’s white loop is a trail just below five miles that offers all the highlights of the canyon, from incredible views from the top to exploring the canyons from the bottom of the ravine. The sandy hiking trails also make this ideal for a dog hike. Explore more hikes at atlantatrails.com.

JH35 OPENING EVENT @HERETIC

Peach Scene @ JH35 T-DANCE

I recently worked with a friend who was very loud and boisterous which I loved, however I feel like there is a time and a place for everything. How should I help my friend understand that there is a difference between being authentically themselves and being too much ALL THE TIME?

You might have to let your friend nd out for themselves. I have always tried to give advice to folks but once I realize that they dont want to hear it then I make sure that I take a step back and let them realize it for themselves. You can only help people who dont want your help so much. Because folks dont want to hear that they are being “extra” they will immediately shut off. So if you are in a setting where they are supposed to be more professional and you cannot seem to get through to them, you will start to notice that they become frustrated with everyone around them. You cannot continue to allow folks to drain your energy when you are trying to help them become a better version of themselves. Often times people also dont realize that you have authentically good intentions in trying to help them, and feel as though you are attacking them. If they are truly your friend then they will know otherwise, but if not… then they might retaliate. Work through it and hope for the best. Best of luck to you!
