18th Annual Peach Days
Welcome To Peach Days 2016!
We are excited to welcome you to our 18th annual “Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage.” This year we will be adding another day to our celebration! With a promise of fun and entertainment for all, Peach Days will be held Thursday through Saturday September 1-3. This event has become so popular that the committee has agreed to add one more day to accommodate the ever growing crowd. Peach Days will open on Thursday evening at 5 pm and continue with full days on both Friday and Saturday. The events we have enjoyed in the past will now be offered all three days. We will open with a variety of displays, food, commercial and homemade sale booths, the quilt show, and continuous entertainment. Special events will be staged on various days and times so be sure to check out the agenda. New this year are many additional eating contests as well as Daily Guessing Jars to win prizes, and a nightly Bingo Game! There will be some new things at the carnival area – one being a very popular foam activity! Come and try it out! The same events we love will be enjoyed daily as well, including the food booths, and the ever popular continuous entertainment. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy the shade as you sit and listen the many home grown talents of Southern Utah. Of course we will again enjoy the amazing display items in the quilt show, home arts, fine arts and gardening, bottling and baking. Maybe YOU will win a cash prize if you enter one of these displays! (Entries are taken Wed. Aug 31 from 4-8:30 pm.) As always – we hope there is something for

everyone to enjoy or participate in over the three day celebration. Thursday and Friday boasts a quilt camp, and Friday the regular events with a movie in the park – “The Good Dinosaur” - to polish off the day. Saturday is the biggest day with additional events such as the Parade (the biggest in Washington County), Canal Trek, 12K Fun Run, and the Peach Cook-off. Be sure to stop by Pioneer Corner where you can get a free dutch oven sample, and enjoy displays and demonstrations of skills passed down from pioneer ancestors. One of the favorites is the blacksmithing demo where horses are shod and their shoes forged on the spot. Many class reunions will be held this weekend also! As you participate in Peach Days you will certainly feel of the heritage of this beautiful valley. This Peach Days celebration, patterned after the “Peach Days” that began as a way for early settlers to market their fruit, has become a treasured celebration for our community and surrounding area. Every year thousands join us from places all over the world to take part in this delightful tradition. Please join us as we greet old friends and make new ones. “Peach Days” is a great way to top off a summer in our pleasant little Hurricane Valley. Hope to see you there! Peach Days History
18th Annual Peach Days
This Labor Day weekend, September 1-3, will be the 18th annual celebration of Peach Days. However, Peach Days really began a long time ago. It is an integral part of Hurricane’s history. What began as a Fruit Festival in 1909 would evolve into the Peach Days and eventually the Washington County Fair. When the infamous Hurricane Canal began to flow the life blood of the valley – water – the farmers were able to begin planting. Water was available as early as 1906, but not until 1908 did it reach the South Fields. Several thousand Elberta peach trees were purchased and planted by the valley’s newly formed “commercial club” in 1908. They battled many hungry rabbits as they nurtured these baby trees along. Frank Barber, an experienced nursery man from Centerville, Utah came to Hurricane in January 1907 and began cracking peach pits which he planted in the spring. He organized the Hurricane Nursery Company (later the Dixie Fruit and Produce Company). Barber became involved in the commercial club and as the vice president organized the first “Fruit Festival”. This was held in 1909 in the Social Hall. The townspeople came and displayed the best fruits they had raised: Elberta peaches, grapes, and melons. The produce was judged and then those attending the “Fruit Festival” all helped eat the scrumptious display. The second year (1910) the Festival expanded and invited outsiders to share in Hurricane’s wealth. The Hurricane

residents and guests shared a meal, then moved to the Social Hall to view the fruit displays. It was described in the county news as fruit with “an extra superior quality”, and that “finer peaches were never seen anywhere”. Equal praise was given to the grapes, melons and other fruits (except for the apples which were a little wormy). After the judging and prizes, the crowd once again ate the delicious fruits. The day’s festivities were rounded off with a baseball game and a dance at the town square (now Heritage Park and Hurricane Community Center). From these humble beginnings the fruit festival grew into a two day event with roping contests, foot races, horse races, bronco riding, steer wrestling, baseball, dancing parties and cantatas. The fruit was still the center of the event and on the afternoon of the second day the melons were cut and everyone ate the fruit display. The Fruit Festival became the Hurricane Peach Days. The first Peach Days was held July 20, 1911. It was originally
September 1,2 & 3, 2016
18th Annual Peach Days called Elberta Days, and in 1915 the name was changed to Peach Days. Exciting things happened at Peach Days, like in 1916 when Mr. Fox brought his automobile to the celebration and charged 10 cents for a ride from the north end of Main Street to the flour mill and back! In 1929 Hurricane’s Peach Days had livestock and poultry exhibits, agricultural and horticultural displays, and various entertainments. It had achieved county fair status. At this time the county wanted to hold this fair annually and alternate among the towns of the county. The suggestion to hold it in St. George the next year was made, but the 1930 festival was again in Hurricane, and there it was to remain. In 1951 the name was changed to the Washington County Fair. County commissioners asked Hurricane to make this the county fair celebration because of its great success. The fair grew bigger and bigger. By the 1970s seed displays and agricultural exhibits were held in the old high school gym, and home arts exhibits were in the elementary multi-purpose room. During the 1980s it was expanded over a couple of city blocks. Home arts and baked and bottled goods were displayed in the new Hurricane High School’s gym and other parts of the building. Commercial booths lined the street along 100 south to Hurricane Elementary where in the old gym were seed and agricultural displays. Food booths were nestled along the street under the shade trees of the Elementary. At least three Continuous Entertainment stages were set up. One on the new High School Lawn, one among the booths along 100 south, and another on the lawn at the elementary. The carnival was set up over the years in various places (football or practice field, the street, playground, and a vacant lot), boxing was held at the American Legion Boxing Arena, and a rodeo at the American Legion Rodeo Grounds. Dances were held (a teenager’s dance and a country dance) at the old tennis courts, and the American Legion patio. The music could be heard all over the downtown and nearby residential area. Two parades were held: a children’s parade on Friday evening, and a general parade on Saturday morning. Remodeling at Hurricane High School caused the County Fair to be moved to the new Hurricane Middle School in the early 1990s. It was much more cramped and congested there and only lasted a few years before the new fair grounds were built at the Washington County Regional Park, and the Washington County Fair was moved to these new facilities.
Hurricane residents missed the small town celebration that had grown so large and moved from the downtown part of their community. In 1999 the first board members (David Stirland, Tom Hirschi, Jarolyn Stout, and Vera Hirschi) organized committees and the first “new” Peach Days, which was held September 3rd and 4th, 1999. It was a huge success, with even its critics admitting it was a wonderful event. The community feeling of unity was back. Fond memories of days gone by were relived, and new memories were made. The goal of the board and committees has been to keep Peach Days a smaller hometown event without an over-flux of “commercial”. Peach Days was held in its old stomping grounds at the old HHS and Hurricane elementary grounds. The old High School was torn down in 2004, so the layout was changed and expanded to the Elementary building, but the events and displays are still much the same. Then in 2010 when Hurricane Elementary was moved to a new location, Hurricane City purchased the old school building and grounds, which is now the Hurricane Community Center. With the acquisition of the old “town square”, it allowed Peach Days to run for two full days as the school schedule no longer needed to be worked around. Whether you are a native to the area or a transplant, Peach Days will give you a great sense of community and appreciation for our pioneer heritage. You can walk through room in the Community Center or Fine Arts building and view various handiwork, garden and art displays. You may want to attend the craft show, or wander through pioneer corner and learn about the crafts and skills our pioneer ancestors passed down. Kids will enjoy the kiddy carnival, Pioneer Games and Candy Cannon. Be sure to grab a bite to eat at the food booths lining the street in front of the Community Center and relax under the shade as you listen to some local talent at the continuous entertainment. Don’t miss the parade Saturday morning or the old fashioned rodeo Saturday night for some great entertainment. Hurricane has a great heritage to celebrate. Be sure to celebrate with us this year at Hurricane Peach Days. (References for this article from: “A Little Oasis in the Desert” by W. Paul Reeve, 1996; and “Hurricane Then and Now” by Dell C Stout, 1999).

18th Annual Peach Days
Pioneer Corner
Peach Days is a celebration of our Heritage – and at Pioneer Corner we do just that. Each year we enjoy artisans at work sharing with us the crafts and skills that have been passed down from pioneer ancestors that are used today both as hobbies and in some cases as a basis for making a living. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade of the east side of the community center lawn on Saturday. You can watch demonstrations, try your hand at many of the demos, and even sample some of the items. Quilting, weaving, mountain men skills, and blacksmithing are among the many Pioneer Corner demonstrations. A big favorite is to watch the horseshoeing and the forging of the horseshoes. Samples of Dutch Oven potatoes and scones are available to all, as well as a taste of homemade molasses candy. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days. Take a stroll through the past and be sure to visit Pioneer Corner!

Parking
If parking problems at a large event are keeping you from coming to Peach Days – you may not have heard about our great parking possibilities! This year new parking opens up south of the community center where the city has purchased a parcel of land to add parking spots. Handicap/disabled parking is available in the Fine Arts Parking lot. But the best part of parking at Peach Days is the shuttles! You can park on the side streets, Hurricane High School, the Red Brick Church (300 S 100 W) or businesses on state or main streets (per posted signs), and catch a ride on the shuttles to the community Center. These shuttles are free and travel up and down the roads throughout the celebration. You can park anywhere and have curbside delivery! Watch for a shuttle driver, and catch a ride to Peach Days!

Garden, flowers, bottling and baking displays make one’s mouth water, and show what wonderful gardeners we have. Beautiful jams, treats of all kinds, and fruits and vegetables from the gardens and kitchens of our residents are inspiring to all of us. Be sure to visit the display portion of our Peach Days Celebration. Or take it one step further and enter your own talents to share with all of us. Without these entries, there would be no display! Historic Hurricane Canal Trek
Every year one of the less known events of Peach Days is the Historic Hurricane Canal Pioneer Trek. There is a choice of three hikes that you and your family can join in on, and tailor fit it to your level of ability. Meet at Heritage Park at 6:30 am for a moderate hike (4.5 miles) or the more strenuous one (5.7 miles). If you want to take it easy meet at the Bowery Trail Head, 100 North 100 East, at 8:00 am for a 1.4 mile hike. These hikes let you see the old Hurricane Canal that many of our residents remember floating down in the hot summer days gone by. This canal was the way water was delivered to our valley from the Virgin River. The head of the canal is upstream and allowed the residents to get water on the Hurricane bench before the river dropped below the valley floor. Without the canal there would be no Hurricane. These hikes are a great way to learn about and appreciate our wonderful Hurricane Valley Heritage.
Special Thanks to our Shuttle Sponsors

Grand Marshalls:
Afton and Viola Fawcett
Afton and Viola Fawcett are surrounded by the people and things they love. From their home on 300 West in Hurricane to their grown children who live either next door or just around the block, Afton and Viola happily watch as grandkids scamper through the house and around the yard. It’s always been that way, and, it’s the way Afton and Viola planned it. “That’s the beauty of what I have here,” Afton says. With two acres to share with the kids and his own home already earmarked for his youngest daughter, Afton says the life he and Viola created in Hurricane has been good to them. Afton was born July 5, 1928, in Alpine, Utah, the son of Robert and Nancy Langston Fawcett. He grew up in Hurricane under the care of his mother while they lived at the home of his grandmother, Annie Langston. He attended Hurricane schools, lettering in track during his high school years. Afton attended Dixie College, graduating with a physical science degree. He considered earning another degree, but did what many young men often do when they have money in the bank - he blew it on a new, red Ford convertible. One day, as luck would have it, Afton and a buddy, Rex Sylvester, were cruising around the college in St. George when they spotted a group of cute girls. It took a few loops around campus before one of the girls recognized Rex and the girls hopped in. And that’s how Afton met Viola Talbot, a business major from Oak City, Utah, who just happened to take that fateful car ride. From then on, it’s fair to say that fancy convertible was worth its weight in gold. The couple were married in the Manti LDS Temple on June 15, 1951, shortly after Viola’s graduation from Dixie College. Viola Talbot Fawcett was born April 25, 1931, to Thomas Reed Talbot and Mary Irene Shipley Talbot. She grew up in Oak City, enjoying the small town and its residents. There were only 10 people in her school class, she says; five boys and five girls. Viola loved music in all its forms and relished participating in school events and activities. She attended Dixie College and joined Delta Phi Alpha, a music club, and belonged to the college choir and a cappella chorus. Music is a gift Viola has shared throughout her life. The couple settled in Hurricane and began building a legacy that endures today. Over time, six children, Sherron, Nancy, Clark, Mary, Kent and Lareesa, were added to the family tree. As that tree grew and their children wed, Afton and Viola became grandparents to 27 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Afton’s chosen vocation was really a self-creation. His childhood hobby of saving and trading stamps morphed into a money-making business. He began trading his valuable stamps for mineral specimens and then, knowing he lived in a mineral-rich region, he began collecting and filling orders. Afton’s college studies of mineralogy, geology, botany and
20
paleontology were coming in useful after all and a career was born. “My vocation is such that it’s unusual,” Afton says, drawing a bit of an eyebrow lift from everyone else in the room. Afton’s vocation has always been unique, even one-of-a-kind. The family business includes collecting and selling harvester ants for ant farms, rocks and minerals for school geology kits, wildflowers to press and sell, and fossils sought after by collectors and dinosaur enthusiasts. Everyone has helped out over the years. From Viola, who has endured more than any mother should have to when it comes to people tracking bugs and dirt into the house, says son Clark, to the grandkids who still help gather wildflowers on Cedar Mountain to bring home and press. “Mom was always supportive of the business. I don’t know how many people would do that,” says Clark. Once the ants were collected, and there were thousands gathered at a time, they were placed in the freezer until they were too cold to move around. “So we’d scatter them on newspaper on the table to count and scoop them into vials. We had that old shag carpet and sometimes we’d have ants all over, rocks, dirt, all that stuff she’s had to put up with and she’s done that. She’s gotten right in and pressed wild flowers and helped out. She’s put up with a lot of things other people wouldn’t put up with,” Clark says. It was a good business model and it took care of his family, Afton says. His chosen profession was so unusual he eventually found himself the focus of a lot of media attention. From local newspapers to the Tonight Show and People Magazine, Afton and his son Kent, who was following in his dad’s footsteps, were interviewed by too many reporters to count. At one point, the media hype was so great Afton was being wooed by representatives of Johnny Carson and Jay Leno to come on their late night talk shows. Both Afton and Viola had something to say about that and continued on page 24

Thomas and Cleo Isom
Thomas and Cleo Isom live on a quiet, well-kept street in Hurricane - one of the original blocks settled by newcomers dedicated to building up a nice town in which to raise a family and enjoy life with friends, neighbors, relatives and good folks all around. Tom moved to Hurricane at the ripe age of 6 months after his parents, Bernard and Ruth Holm Isom, decided to pull up stakes from Idaho Falls, Idaho, and bring their young family to Hurricane. Tom’s father was a peach farmer, one of the first to raise bushels of delicious peaches for which Hurricane farmers became so well known around the state and region. Eventually, as Tom grew in stature and strength, he graduated in 1950 from Hurricane High School and found himself entering the U.S. Army for military service. Basic training took him to Fort Ord in California and to Fort Belvoir in Virginia where he excelled as a student in the Engineer School and Center. While there, Tom also gained a deep appreciation for education that would serve him well for the rest of his life. Cleo was born in Virgin to Lois Earl and William Daniel Matthews and grew up in the small, close-knit town. She also graduated from Hurricane High School - but not until 1956. Both Cleo and Tom remember quite distinctly the day they met. Tom had been discharged from the military the previous year and returned home to Hurricane. It was a perfect fall day for high school football and local young men and women were gathering at the school to watch the team play. Tom decided it was the place to be as well. As Cleo tells it, “We got acquainted at a football game.” Tom has a slightly different twist on the story: “I think I followed her home from the football game.” Cleo says she was quite sure that Tom still had a few flames to fan and things to do, even quoting from Tom’s high school yearbook where he had written he “didn’t like silly girls.” But Tom was smitten with Cleo, who he says “wasn’t silly” and “it was just one of those things you just kind of fall into; Cleo was what I was looking for,” and the two got married in 1956. They’ll celebrate 60 years together during Peach Days 2016. Tom’s career as a teacher began after graduating in 1960 from Utah State University. He taught at Kanab
High School for three years before moving his family to Hurricane in 1963. They even lived for a couple of summers at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon while Tom worked for the National Park Service, but teaching was his career. He enjoyed his 30 years as an industrial arts teacher,

21 of them at Dixie Middle School and 6 years at Hurricane Middle School. Tom also found time to serve his community by accepting positions on the Hurricane City Planning Commission (4 years), the Water Board (2 years), as a member of the Lions Club (10 years), and as an integral part of the Washington County Fair Board for 10 years including two years as the board president. The most exciting volunteer work, however, came at odd hours and sometimes in the middle of the night. Tom enjoyed being a 20-year member of the Washington CountySearch and Rescue Team. One year he served as commander of the SAR team. “It was something different and exciting,” Tom says, “it was a good feeling helping people.” Cleo says Tom often got a call to go out with the Search and Rescue team at any and all hours of the night, which sent him right out the door and her back to bed. Son Steve Isom says his mother “couldn’t fall asleep until her kids were home from a date,” but she could always “fall right back to sleep” whenever his dad headed out in the dark for a search and rescue operation. “I just knew I wasn’t in charge then,” Cleo says philosophically.
Membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints has been an important part of their lives as well, with Tom serving as a bishop of his LDS ward among other church callings for the couple. Tom and Cleo have four children, Shanna Isom Britton, Michael Thomas Isom, Steven Paul Isom and Eric Matthews Isom. There are 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Although neither Tom or Cleo like to be in the limelight, they both say Hurricane has been a wonderful place to raise a family. “We have had a good life together,” Cleo says. Once or twice Cleo asked Tom about moving, maybe trying someplace new to live. “I remember telling him one time I’d like to try living in a big city and he said, “You wouldn’t like it. You wouldn’t know your neighbors.” You just settle in wherever you are planted. He was the one that made the wise choices,” says Cleo.

it was, “No.” “We didn’t want to do that because you get down there and they want to know how you do what you do and then everybody starts collecting ants,” Viola and Afton agreed. One publication, the National Enquirer, even published an article that said the couple was earning upwards of $80,000 a year collecting the tiny insects. That’s when Viola’s sense of humor kicked in. “They had a price of what we were making and it was so huge,” she says now with a bit of dramatic flair in her voice. “We had to check and see if it was true!” Clark points out his parents have always conducted their business with integrity. “It wasn’t about money or things with Mom and Dad,” he says. “It’s about relationships, the people. Whatever they did they made sure they did it right and were treating people fair.” Viola’s musical talents, which includes both singing and playing instruments, have always been a huge part of family life, says Kent, who is known for having perfect pitch and the ability to play the piano by ear. “That’s the biggest thing about my Mom, she’s taught all of us piano and instilled us with music. She would sing and play the piano all the time. I used to love it when she played the accordion.” Viola taught a lot of local children to play the piano too, and even now there are a few grown-up kids in town who tell her
24
they wish they’d been a better piano student. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, music has meant a lot to the Fawcett family. Viola played the organ for sacrament meeting and the piano in primary in her LDS ward for many years. She also served in the name extraction genealogy program for 22 years. Church callings have kept Afton busy as well. Afton’s sense of humor is well known and nearly legendary, Clark says. “I remember one day Dad had some peaches and had a hankering for a peach milkshake, so he took those down to the Dairy Queen to have them make him one,” Clark says, adding it was made clear to his Dad by the employees that his request probably couldn’t be accommodated. “Well, he wouldn’t quit until he talked to the owner and got what he wanted. He’s not afraid to do and say things. He definitely likes to make people laugh.” Afton and Viola like to “do things right,” Clark says, and judging by the atmosphere around the house that July day as family chatted and laughed together while kids thundered through the door - they have done that and more.

Way Off Broads is a group of local ladies who love to sing “for fun”. The group includes Marla Gledhill, Alicelyn Jaques, Tylia Jackman, Wanda Despain, June Jeffery, and Sheri Beatty. The name was to be the stage name for the group’s initial “Broadway Magic” performance in 2008, and is descriptive of the nature of their music and outlook on life. Known for music that is lighthearted and fun, they focus on fun, crazy songs, and good harmony. There are always a few surprises when these ladies get together. Jupiter, returning for their fifth appearance at Peach Days, began as a songwriting endeavor to blend melodic hooks, introspective lyrics and trance rhythms into songs that are both catchy and meaningful. Its five members (located in various towns across Utah) are drawn from diverse backgrounds, ranging from classic rock to opera; and from the self-taught to the collegiate. Each brings their own perspectives, talents, and experiences to the mix. They have been performing around the intermountain west for several years now, and are pleased to be returning to Peach Days. Red Sand Bluegrass Band is a Folk/Bluegrass band with a diverse playlist covering their versions of songs from Nickel Creek, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Hank Williams, Earl Scruggs, the Beatles etc. At this performance listeners become participants if they’d like. Pick up a washboard, set of spoons, saw and play along. The group is made up of Keith Behunin on Banjo, Idie Behunin on bass, Sean Sevy on Fiddle and vocals, Melissa Sevy on vocals and an occasional penny whistle and Kent Sevy on Mandolin and vocals. They like to embellish traditional songs with their own harmonies and instrumentation. They’re all about having fun with the audience.

The Lawn Darts is Southern Utah’s premier party band. This is not a typical bar band. This is not a bar band at all, but a high octane classic rock and original band who has opened for Styx, Kansas, The Beach Boys and has headlined at the OC Tanner Amphitheater, Washington County Fair and St. George First Night. Driving the band at the front is the powerful voice of Travis Brown. Supplying the back bone of the band is the super tight rhythm section with Jeff Tuscano on Bass and Steve Gustaveson on Drums. The wing men are Lisle Crowley on guitar and Don Shelline on keyboard, flute, various percussion paraphernalia and vocals. The band has an extremely high level of musicianship, but remember, their goal is a good time for everyone involved. To book The Lawn Darts call 435-619-5193 or e mail lcrowley@infowest.com.
The Fabulous Honky Tonk Heroes present the hits of the icons of “Classic Country” and their playlist is filled with songs from George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Buck Owens, and many more of country’s favorite artists. The Heroes are designed for the dancers and perform a nice mix of shuffles, swings, line dances, two-steps, with an occasional slow dance or waltz to keep everybody on the dance floor. They present the songs the way you heard them on the radio, adding the “Rockabilly” sounds of Hank Sr., Elvis Presley, Dwight Yoakam, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, and Marty Stuart. They will often tease audiences a little too with southern rock tunes from Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, CCR, The Kentucky Headhunters or The Mavericks. The core of the group consists of Kevin Till on electric bass, “Dutch Workman” on the drum kit, Jim Sevy on electric lead guitar and harmony vocals, with country singer-songwriter Rich Panessa on lead vocals, rhythm acoustic guitar, and adding a hatful of his originals. The First Southern Baptist Church of Hurricane, UT., would like to welcome you to come and praise The Lord in song with us. We began our worship team adventure together two years ago and take full delight in singing Biblically driven songs giving all recognition to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The uniqueness of our group is that we sing to God and God alone, and have the opportunity every Sunday to lead a congregation to worship Him in song. Kia has been singing her whole life and began competing in the first grade. She sang in every choir her high school had to offer and performed with Grace Notes for a year. She is preparing to study music at SUU next fall and hopes to make many more memories on stage around the world. This is her ninth year performing in Peach Days, and her performance is dedicated, in loving memory, to her daddy.
