16th Annual Peach Days

Welcome To Peach Days 2014!

Welcome to our 16th annual “Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage”! We are excited to have you come and enjoy this wonderful community event. It is hard to believe so many years have passed since this well-loved city celebration was revived. Our “Peach Days” is patterned after the Peach Days of long ago that began as a Fruit Festival and a way to market the community’s fruit harvest. It eventually became the Washington County Fair. When the Fair moved to its present location, residents missed the “old” fair and Peach Days - and thus today’s celebration was born. As always there will be something for everyone – young and old alike. Peach Days is set up for you to come for free - or spend a little cash - and enjoy two fun-filled days. There are amazing displays where we can share and enjoy the talents of the community. Home Arts, Fine Arts, Garden, flower, baking and bottling displays are housed in the community center. (The center has undergone more upgrades this year and we look forward to enjoying all that it has to offer.) Across the street in the Fine Arts Building is the popular Quilt Show as well as the “Hurricane’s Got Talent (in its 2nd year) and the original pageant “Come See Our Valley”. Both events will have a packed house and you will not want to miss them! Outside we always have the food, commercial and homemade sales booths. Something for everyone can be found as you stroll down the street-turnedmarket place, or even join in the Food Eating Contests or gather candy from the Candy Cannon! There will be kid and teen activities from bounce houses and water

balls to climbing wall and zip line. The Continuous Entertainment is always a favorite with professional quality local musicians! And don’t miss the Pioneer Corner that is Saturday only. Come and enjoy demonstrations of blacksmithing, horseshoeing, candy making, candles, weaving, Dutch oven, and more; all skills passed down from our pioneer forefathers. Part of the “heritage” we celebrate. Of course there is much more: the Movie in the Park (Planes), 12 K Fun Run, Canal Hikes, Rodeo (the most fun small town rodeo ever!) and the scrumptious Peach Cook-off (new location this year). We will top the two day celebration off with a fireworks display that you can watch from most places in town or the community Center. Come join us as we celebrate the wonderful valley that we all call home! Greet old friends, make some new ones, and rub shoulders with some of the best the world has to offer. Make some memories with us at Peach Days! Hope to see you there!

Peach Days History

16th Annual Peach Days

This Labor Day weekend, August 29 and 30, will be the 16th annual celebration of Peach Days. However, Peach Days really began a long time ago. It is an integral part of Hurricane’s history. What began as a Fruit Festival in 1909 would evolve into the Peach Days and eventually the Washington County Fair. When the infamous Hurricane Canal began to flow the life blood of the valley – water – the farmers were able to begin planting. Water was available as early as 1906, but not until 1908 did it reach the South Fields. Several thousand Elberta peach trees were purchased and planted by the valley’s newly formed “commercial club” in 1908. They battled many hungry rabbits as they nurtured these baby trees along. Frank Barber, an experienced nursery man from Centerville, Utah came to Hurricane in January 1907 and began cracking peach pits which he planted in the spring. He organized the Hurricane Nursery Company (later the Dixie Fruit and Produce Company). Barber became involved in the commercial club and as the vice president organized the first “Fruit Festival”. This was held in 1909 in the Social Hall. The townspeople came and displayed the best fruits they had raised: Elberta peaches, grapes, and melons. The produce was judged and then those attending the “Fruit Festival” all helped eat the scrumptious display. The second year (1910) the Festival expanded and invited outsiders to share in Hurricane’s wealth. The Hurricane

6 2014 Peach Days Master.indd 6

residents and guests shared a meal, then moved to the Social Hall to view the fruit displays. It was described in the county news as fruit with “an extra superior quality”, and that “finer peaches were never seen anywhere”. Equal praise was given to the grapes, melons and other fruits (except for the apples which were a little wormy). After the judging and prizes, the crowd once again ate the delicious fruits. The day’s festivities were rounded off with a baseball game and a dance at the town square (now Heritage Park and Hurricane Community Center). From these humble beginnings the fruit festival grew into a two day event with roping contests, foot races, horse races, bronco riding, steer wrestling, baseball, dancing parties and cantatas. The fruit was still the center of the event and on the afternoon of the second day the melons were cut and everyone ate the fruit display. The Fruit Festival became the Hurricane Peach Days. The first Peach Days was held July 20, 1911. It was originally

August 29 & 30, 2014 7/23/14 10:51 AM

16th Annual Peach Days called Elberta Days, and in 1915 the name was changed to Peach Days. Exciting things happened at Peach Days, like in 1916 when Mr. Fox brought his automobile to the celebration and charged 10 cents for a ride from the north end of Main Street to the flour mill and back! In 1929 Hurricane’s Peach Days had livestock and poultry exhibits, agricultural and horticultural displays, and various entertainments. It had achieved county fair status. At this time the county wanted to hold this fair annually and alternate among the towns of the county. The suggestion to hold it in St. George the next year was made, but the 1930 festival was again in Hurricane, and there it was to remain. In 1951 the name was changed to the Washington County Fair. County commissioners asked Hurricane to make this the county fair celebration because of its great success. The fair grew bigger and bigger. By the 1970s seed displays and agricultural exhibits were held in the old high school gym, and home arts exhibits were in the elementary multi-purpose room. During the 1980s it was expanded over a couple of city blocks. Home arts and baked and bottled goods were displayed in the new Hurricane High School’s gym and other parts of the building. Commercial booths lined the street along 100 south to Hurricane Elementary where in the old gym were seed and agricultural displays. Food booths were nestled along the street under the shade trees of the Elementary. At least three Continuous Entertainment stages were set up. One on the new High School Lawn, one among the booths along 100 south, and another on the lawn at the elementary. The carnival was set up over the years in various places (football or practice field, the street, playground, and a vacant lot), boxing was held at the American Legion Boxing Arena, and a rodeo at the American Legion Rodeo Grounds. Dances were held (a teenager’s dance and a country dance) at the old tennis courts, and the American Legion patio. The music could be heard all over the downtown and nearby residential area. Two parades were held: a children’s parade on Friday evening, and a general parade on Saturday morning. Remodeling at Hurricane High School caused the County Fair to be moved to the new Hurricane Middle School in the early 1990s. It was much more cramped and congested there and only lasted a few years before the new fair grounds were built at the Washington County Regional Park, and the Washington County Fair was moved to these new facilities. Hurricane residents missed the small town celebration that had grown so large and moved from the downtown part of their community. In 1999 the first board members (David Stirland, Tom Hirschi, Jarolyn Stout, and Vera Hirschi) organized committees and the first “new” Peach Days, which was held September 3rd and 4th, 1999. It was a huge success, with even its critics admitting it was a wonderful event. The community feeling of unity was back. Fond memories of days gone by were relived, and new memories were made. The goal of the board and committees has been to keep Peach Days a smaller hometown event without an over-flux of “commercial”. Peach Days was held in its old stomping grounds at the old HHS and Hurricane elementary grounds. The old High School was torn down in 2004, so the layout was changed and expanded to the Elementary building, but the events and displays are still much the same. Then in 2010 when Hurricane Elementary was moved to a new location, Hurricane City purchased the

old school building and grounds, which is now the Hurricane Community Center. With the acquisition of the old “town square”, it allowed Peach Days to run for two full days as the school schedule no longer needed to be worked around. Whether you are a native to the area or a transplant, Peach Days will give you a great sense of community and appreciation for our pioneer heritage. You can walk through room in the Community Center or Fine Arts building and view various handiwork, garden and art displays. You may want to attend the craft show, or wander through pioneer corner and learn about the crafts and skills our pioneer ancestors passed down. Kids will enjoy the kiddy carnival, Pioneer Games and Candy Cannon. Be sure to grab a bite to eat at the food booths lining the street in front of the Community Center and relax under the shade as you listen to some local talent at the continuous entertainment. Don’t miss the parade Saturday morning or the old fashioned rodeo Saturday night or “Come See Our Valley” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for some great entertainment. Hurricane has a great heritage to celebrate. Be sure to celebrate with us this year at Hurricane Peach Days. (References for this article from: “A Little Oasis in the Desert” by W. Paul Reeve, 1996; and “Hurricane Then and Now” by Dell C Stout, 1999).

16th Annual Peach Days Pioneer Corner–Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage. This theme to our celebration we usually refer to as just Peach Days, sets the stage for the popular Pioneer Corner. In Pioneer Corner, our Heritage is shown very strongly. Many crafts and skills that our pioneer forefathers used as a part of their daily living, have been passed down and are used today both as hobbies, or in some cases as a basis for making a living. Pioneer Corner is patterned after the Southern Utah Folk Life Festival that used to be held in Zion every September. There you will find many of the same demonstrations in our Pioneer Corner. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade on the Community Center lawn on Saturday, August 30. Stop and watch the demonstrations, ask questions, or even try your hand at many of the wonderful things available. Each demonstrator has generously donated his or her day to share with us the parts of the past that have been handed down to us today. Some booths will have samples of their items to taste such as delicious Dutch Oven potatoes, scones, or molasses candy. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days! Quilt Show–Be sure to check out the beautiful quilts on display in the Community Center Fine Arts Building. FIREWORKS at the close of Peach Days on Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will be launched near the Community Center, not the high school. Watch out for street closed signs. Violaters could be towed. Home Depot Kids Activity Center – Bring your kids and participate in the Home Depot Kids activity center located in the south lawn of the Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday, August 30 after the parade. FREE, but first come first serve. Hurricane’s Got Talent – Calling all singers, dancers, ventriloquists, comedians, musicians, magicians and strangely talented people! We want you to participate in the 2nd annual Peach Days Hurricane’s Got Talent Competition. Three categories: 12 and under, 13-18 years old, and Adult sections. 16th Annual Peach Days

Peach Days Rodeo

Each year hundreds of patrons enjoy the annual Peach Days Rodeo. It is held at the rodeo arena on 200 West 750 North (near the city pool). It is small town rodeo at its best. This is a mostly kids rodeo, with teens and younger riding bucking steers, or kids in the “Mutton Bustin” where they do their best to hold on to an adult sheep. There are poles, barrels, and roping for all ages, or the greased pig chase and chicken chase for kids. These kid events require no cowboy experience – just show up and join in! But by far the favorite is the “Hide Race” where one rider pulls a cow hide to the end of the arena, and a standing team mate hops on the hide and holds on to the rope for a dusty and wild ride to the finish line. This rodeo is a bargain for families: only $3 per person or $15 for families. It is a fundraiser for Hurricane High FFA. It is held Saturday night at 7:00 pm and promises a fun filled evening for all who attend. There is a “cook shack” ready to provide burgers, nachos, and more for the hungry, or some drinks to cool you off in the summer evening. Don’t miss the Peach Days Rodeo. It is a guaranteed fun night for all who come!

Pioneer Corner

The title of our celebration, “Peach Days; A celebration of our Heritage”, sets the stage for the popular “Pioneer Corner”. In Pioneer Corner, we enjoy demonstrations of many of the crafts and skills that our pioneer forefathers used as a part of their daily living. These talents have been passed down and are used today both as hobbies and in some cases as a basis for making a living. Pioneer Corner is patterned after the Southern Utah Folk Life Festival that used to be held in Zion every September. There you could see demonstrations of traditional pioneer crafts and lifestyles. We have included many of the same demonstrations in our own Pioneer Corner. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade of the east side TOOLS

of the Community Center lawn on Saturday. Stop and watch the demonstrations, ask questions, or even try your hand at many of the wonderful things available. Each demonstrator has generously donated his or her day to share with us the parts of the past that have been handed down to us today. Be sure to tell them thanks! Some booths will have samples of their items to taste such as the delicious Dutch oven potatoes, scones, or molasses candy. We are also able to enjoy favorite demonstrations such as the horseshoeing, quilting, weaving and spinning, or browse the many interesting parts of the blacksmith shop. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days. Take a stroll through the past and be sure to visit Pioneer Corner!

Zion Piecemakers Quilt Guild Zion Piecemakers Quilt Guild will be hosting their annual Quilt Show located in the Fine Arts building during Peach Days. The special exhibits this year will include a display of quilts that the quiltmaker has kept track of how much time and how much money it took to make the quilt. This will provide an interesting and eye-opening look to what goes into making an heirloom. Our challenge quilt this year will feature baby quilts all made using the same pre-printed panel of bright colored animals. It will be fun to see these cute quilts. Please vote for your favorite. Some of these quilts will be donated to the NICU at Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Home Depot Kids Activity Center The Home Depot’s Kids Workshops offer useful projects including the creation of toolboxes, fire trucks and mail organizers, as well as more educational projects, such as a window birdhouse, bughouse or Declaration of Independence frame kit.

The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment in them. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children.

In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin. Saturday, August 30 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. FREE, but first come first serve. South drive way by Fine Arts Auditorium.

Grand Marshals:

Wayne and Margene Page Edwards

Many Hurricane folks think of Wayne Edwards as primarily “Coach Edwards”, “Principal Edwards”, or “Counselor Edwards. Others will think of him as “Bishop Edwards”. Margene’s briefer career as a teacher will be less known but her service work in the Relief Society has touched the lives of many people. Wayne grew up in Orem, one of fourteen children belonging to Philo and Addie Edwards. The Edwards boys were athletic and Wayne was happy to be the water boy of the high school football team on which older brother LaVell starred. Wayne also played football for Orem’s Lincoln High School and it was during a rout of Pleasant Grove’s team that Wayne first became somewhat aware of his future wife, cheerleader Margene Page who showed exuberant school spirit in spite of the painful drubbing her team was taking. Although Margene was born in Provo, her father, a lawyer, soon became the Pleasant Grove City Attorney and that’s where she grew up. The Orem Bench along which both families lived is blessed with favorable fruit vegetable growing conditions. Attorney Page, a gentleman farmer, grew peaches, cherries, apples and pears. Philo Edward’s farm was far more extensive; sales of strawberries, raspberries and some tree-fruit crops and were the main support for his family. Margene frequently picked strawberries for the Edward’s so she and Wayne may have been aware of each other but they were too busy with strawberries to give thought to socializing. As one of a farmer’s 14 children, Wayne grew up in what some might call poverty. The Edwards children didn’t know it was poverty though; there was love, happiness and support in the home. Sports

were important to the Edwards family and Wayne excelled as well, being on the team all three years of high school. The Page family had only two children, Margene and older sister, Betty. Both were blessed with musical ability and even as little girls they charmed many audiences with their piano duets. Teaching was a strong tradition in her mother’s family. Margene’s great grandmother, grandmother, and mother all taught: Margene followed suit as has daughter, Gina, who currently teaches at Hurricane High School. Both Wayne and Margene chose to attend Utah State University where they met and fell in love. Wayne interrupted college to serve a mission in Australia and almost miraculously received no “Dear John” letter. Margene graduated soon after Wayne left and taught school including, quite adventurously, a year in Germany. They married when the mission ended and Wayne completed his degree at the Y continued on page 24

where he was also to receive his masters degree and counseling certificate. They both taught two years in Moab then Wayne accepted a counseling position with Hurricane High School. Here they were unofficially solicited to move into the South Ward by some charming south ward ladies. Margene, now a mother of three, began making homemaking her career; the Edwards’ were to welcome three more children. Wayne’s counseling career was enlivened by being assistant football coach, a sport with which he was well acquainted. His coaching career was further enlivened by becoming the wrestling coach, a sport of which he knew nothing. The program was begun at the request of several boys who wanted to compete. Wayne obtained how-to books and learned along with the boys and each year they attended a wrestling clinic in California. Efforts paid off when the wrestling program produced several wrestlers who placed high in state wrestling meets. Wayne kept coaching even after he left counseling and became the school’s principal. After a couple of years though the superintendent suggested he drop the coaching duties. After fourteen years of

24 2014 Peach Days Master.indd 24

administration, Wayne stepped aside and let another enjoy the responsibilities and sometimes gutwrenching problems but only after first hiring himself to be the new football coach. Sometime along the way he served as ward bishop for the usual five years plus. As the children got older, Margene resumed teaching this time working with visually impaired children She retired a couple of years after Wayne did and they were now ready to take on new challenges and new experiences. They have traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Israel, Baltic countries, Russia and England. They have served two missions, one to the same Australian mission in which Wayne served as a young man and one in Salt Lake at the genealogy library. They have of course been fully involved in local church activities and in performing civic duties as necessary. Wayne has been active in the local chapter of the SUP and has found that enjoyable. After retirement, they could have easily moved, say, back to Utah County where they both have family ties but they obviously chose not to. Wayne stated: “We came because we needed a job. We stayed because we love the people.” The feeling is mutual.

16th Annual Peach Days The Stirland family is thrilled to be part of the Peach Days tradition. Over 50 year ago, Gordon & Polly Stirland taught their children to love music and dance. The sound of musical instruments, singing and tap shoes could be heard from early morning until late at night in their home. This wonderful heritage has been passed on to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Come and join the entire family Saturday at 6:00 for an evening of old favorites and a whole lot of fun. Casey Lofthouse has been singing for many years, he just hasn’t been heard much past the bathroom window, until recently. Casey grew up in Northern Utah and the winter months were long and cold! He spent much of his time in the front room of the family home listening to the vinyl records. His love of Classic Country was instilled at an early age and he enjoys spending time sharing the so called “moldy oldies” every chance he gets. During middle and high school he learned alot about music and singing in the choir plus he played the cornet and tuba. His Band is in the little black box, and the excuse for that is he doesn’t have to bail the drummer out for a Friday night gig. If you love Classic Country don’t miss Casey performing again for Peach Days Classic Country has been making good old country music around these here parts for about 8 years. This band has been the house band at the Elks in St. George for 6 years and has played Western Ledgends in Kanab for 6 years, Peach Days for 5 years, the Sheriff’s BBQ for 4 years. They also played the Dixie Roundup, Art Festival, Apple Valley and Veyo Fire Depts. fund raisers. They have also played the main stage at the Washington County Fair. This band also plays four times each month at several local retirement homes. Frank Melton, Scott Emmett, Garn Hunnington and Steve Adam make this country band a real toe tapper everywhere they play. Jarolyn Stout and Family performs in many community and church events throughout the year. Jarolyn Stout, married to Collin, has performed her entire life with her mother Carolyn Ballard Shelley. As Jarolyn's eight children came along, they joined the act. Shantel, Trinity, Chelsea, Jacob, Summer, Lucas and Heather will all join in the performance this year. The Stouts accompany themselves on guitars, banjo and the fiddle, and will sing a variety of country and easy listening numbers both as a group and solos. They will perform on stage one at 11:30 on Saturday.

Brad Cahoon, Joe Furse, Zach Forsyth and Colton Winder are excited to be performing again at Peach Days for their 11th year. They sing and accompany themselves on several instruments including the fiddle, guitar, banjo, bass, harmonica, mandolin, and concertina. As always, they will perform a variety of bluegrass, folk and old-time music and would love to see you all there!

Way Off Broads is a group of local ladies who love to sing “for fun”. The group includes Marla Gledhill, Alicelyn Jaques, Tylia Jackman, Wanda Despain, June Jeffery, and Sheri Beatty. The name was to be the stage name for the group’s initial “Broadway Magic” performance in 2008, and is descriptive of the nature of their music and outlook on life. Known for music that is lighthearted and fun, they focus on fun, crazy songs, and good harmony. There are always a few surprises when these ladies get together. Jupiter, returning for their fourth appearance at Peach Days, began as a songwriting endeavor to blend melodic hooks, introspective lyrics and trance rhythms into songs that are both catchy and meaningful. Its five members (located in various towns across Utah) are drawn from diverse backgrounds, ranging from classic rock to opera; and from the self-taught to the collegiate. Each brings their own perspectives, talents, and experiences to the mix. They have been performing around the intermountain west for several years now, and are pleased to be returning to Peach Days.

Vocal students of Bonnie LeBaron will be performing again this year on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. on the East lawn stage. Bonnie has been teaching vocal and piano students for many years, and more recently Let's Play Music students. The program this year will include pop & musical theater tunes and should please listeners.

The Lawn Darts is Southern Utah’s premier party band. This is not a typical bar band. This is not a bar band at all, but a high octane classic rock and original band who has opened for Styx, Kansas, The Beach Boys and has headlined at the OC Tanner Amphitheater, Washington County Fair and St. George First Night. Driving the band at the front is the powerful voice of Travis Brown. Supplying the back bone of the band is the super tight rhythm section with Jeff Tuscano on Bass and Steve Gustaveson on Drums. The wing men are Lisle Crowley on guitar and Don Shelline on keyboard, flute, various percussion paraphernalia and vocals. The band has an extremely high level of musicianship, but remember, their goal is a good time for everyone involved. To book The Lawn Darts call 435-619-5193 or e mail lcrowley@infowest.com. Evening Sunrise plays a mix of Country, Blue Grass, Rock ‘n Roll and Original Music.

Wayne Metzler of Washington, Utah is a Rochester, New York native. His hobby and self-‐taught playing of the guitar has brought him together with fellow band members Singer/songwriter Carolyn Murset has lived in southern Utah with her husband and five children since 1983. Carolyn has performed at the St. George Tabernacle, St. George Arts Festival, George’s Corner Café and the Town and Country Bank noon concerts, as well as Hurricane City Peach Days. She is also a member of John Houston’s Gospel Choir She also plays her own finger style arrangement in alternate guitar tunings.

Pat Swansborough, singer/songwriter, has been playing guitar in bands since he taught himself at the age of fourteen. Pat grew up in northern California and has played in several bands and locations throughout that area. Singer/songwriter Lauretta Swansborough moved to Washington in 1994 from Delta, Utah. Carolyn has performed at the St. George Tabernacle, St. George Arts Festival, George’s Corner Café and the Town and Country Bank noon concerts, as well as Hurricane City Peach Days. She is also a member of John Houston’s Gospel Choir. She also plays her own finger style arrangement in alternate guitar tunings. Jeri Churchill, and I do "Jeri's Parodies" Comedy songs for all occasions. I write and sing parodies that poke fun at the things that life throws at us women who are of a "certain age". Such as memory loss, weight gain, housework, husbands, etc...Because life is a lot easier when you can laugh at it!

Rob Goulding has been performing in Peach Days for many years and at the Washington County Fair. I've sung at lots of funerals and weddings and other impromptu settings. I enjoy singing and accompanying myself with guitar. Rob and Sally have served a couple of missions and I was able to use my talents there.

After a chance meeting at a superhero convention, Chauncey and the Chamberlains discovered that their voices were a great match. Their repertoire focuses on crowd pleasers ranging from Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Eric Clapton, to KT Tunstall. Their common interests are fighting crime, and happy music.

The Forresters are an Indie Rock band that first performed as the guest band in Hurricane Idol last year. This teen-group attends Hurricane High School. The members consist of Jefferson Bjarnson (vocals and lead guitar), Jaxton Winder (guitar), Braydon Buell (bass), and Kory Adams (drums). The band’s music inspirations range from Led Zeppelin to Imagine Dragons and Two Door Cinema Club. Jefferson plays guitar, violin, piano, and sings, although his forte is guitar, which he’s been playing for over 6 years. He enjoys athletics but spends most of his energy on soccer. Jaxton has been playing guitar for 2 years now, and lately has been learning vocals. His music inspirations are Imagine Dragons, John Mayer and Neon Trees. Braydon, the youngest member of the band, plays cello, bass and drums. His music influences include Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Kiss. Kory Adams plays drums for the band and has played other percussion instruments for over 4 years. He enjoys playing soccer in his free time. The Forresters have a unique, easy-to-listen-to style with both cover songs and their originals. Once you start listening to them you’ll want more. Leif Bjarnson, Jefferson’s father, will be singing a couple songs with them at this event and will be helping out as sound tech.

Having begun his musical studies on the trombone and continuing with it through high school, D.J. didn't actually begin the trumpet until his 3rd year in college. Originally from southern Utah, he obtained an associates degree from Dixie State College in St. George. While attending DSC, he served as principal trumpet in the Utah Intercollegiate Band three consecutive years. His solo honors include first prize in the Intercollegiate Solo Competition, held in Denver, CO. This prize earned him a solo performance in Denver with the Arapahoe Philharmonic. Professionally, D.J. has performed with such organizations as the Utah Symphony, the Lex De Azevedo Orchestra, and the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. When not performing, D.J. enjoys working as a brass clinician, and through the use of the Smart Music Studio software by Coda Music Technologies, he helps young students learn to make practice more effective and fun. D.J. is also an accomplished instrument repair technician. His other interests include hiking, camping, and various forms of meditation. D.J. presently lives in southern Utah with his wife, Kristine, and their six children. 16th Annual Peach Days Even though the Reid Family Band is a 100%, real-life, family band, they don't sound like the stereotypical "family band". When they get up on the stage they are a tight, rhythmic, Country Rock band that show their experience, having played all over Southern Utah for the past 20 years. They all live and work in Washington County. Don is a 38-year veteran police officer and criminal justice professor, Glenda works in Banking, Sasha is a charge nurse at Dixie Regional Medical Center, Logan is a Drug Prevention Specialist and Sociology Professor and Sara is a Kindergarten teacher. They focus their music-making in Southern Utah, but have played in Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming. They will be rocking the "Band Stage" at 1pm during Peach Days. If you want to dance, or just sit back and enjoy some great beat-driven music with great instrumentals and tight harmonies, you won't want to miss this veteran band!

The Fabulous Honky Tonk Heroes perform the finest "Contemporary & Classic Country" ever written and feature the #1 hits of country icons like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Strait, Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam, George Jones, Buck Owens, and so many more. "The Heroes" sets include favorites from the pioneers of "Rockabilly" and "Country Rock" legends too, plus originals of one of this regions top songwriters. Country music fans two-step, shuffle, swing, line dance, or rock with The Fabulous Honky Tonk Heroes!

The Rok Dox is a group of mostly doctors who have been playing classic rock and roll for over twelve years. The group initially got together at the insistence of the doctors’ wives to perform at an annual fund-raiser for various community causes. Since then, they have played at most of the area venues including the Electric Theater, First Night, the Arts Festival, the County Fair, Huntsman Senior Games, various Sun River events and the St. George Marathon. They entertained at the Olympic Torch Party at Stephen Wade Auto in February 2002. They started to write their own music and released their first CD, “Red Dirt,” in 2004. The group is composed of: Paul Doxey, M.D., an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon (guitar), John Davis, M.D., a radiologist (percussion and vocals), Steve Coleman, EMT (bass guitar and vocals), Bob Ruesch (keyboards), Jason Ahee, M.D., an ophthalmologist (guitar and vocals) and John Miner, M.D., an anesthesiologist (lead vocals). The Rok Dox repertoire of classic hits includes numbers from the Beatles, Santana, Steve Miller, Bachman-Turner, Led Zepplin, Steppenwolf, the Eagles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bon Jovi, Robert Palmer, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith and many other artists. The song selections are upbeat and lively - the kind of music that makes people want to get up and dance! It is hard to tell who is having more fun, the audience or the “Dox.”

Dorothy Fraizer has been entertaining groups for years with her "Squeeze Box", playing the old time favorites with a snappy beat and deep feeling. For the last few years for Peach Days, she has invited David and Tana Segler to sing along and Charles Reeve and Zach Forsyth to provide some guitar and bass back up. Come and enjoy the program, it should be "fine as frog's hair" unless Chuck does something (like play his guitar too fast) to make Dorothy "croak her gizzard!"
