On Friday, Peachland’s oldest bar becomes its newest. The Edgewater Hotel has been remodelled, paint has been rolled, decorations have been put up, staff has been hired and the name has been twisted inside out. On Friday, the Edgewater becomes the Water's Edge and the doors will open once more. It's some of the same, with a whole lot of new. "I bought the place clearly with redevelopment in mind," said Steve Allison, president of TNI Property Management. "That hasn't changed." Allison said timing is everything and at this point, he can't say when the hotel property will be needed for his downtown revitalization plans. In the mean time, Allison has put tens of thousands of dollars worth of renovations into the building and, starting Friday, The Water's Edge will be open for business. "It looks way better than it did before," said Allison. Renovations have been ongoing in the building since it was purchased in

2010 and even the hotel rooms have received an extreme makeover. "For those who haven't seen the rooms before, you'll be surprised," said Allison. "For those who have seen the rooms before, you'll be really surprised." Opening on a regular basis will be the dining room and the hidden gem that is the hotel's lounge. The latter is beautiful, quaint, charming and has a great ambience. The pub -- the centerpiece of entertainment in Peachland's downtown for decades, will open for special occasions, such as for major sporting events and when featured bands are set to rock the house. Eyes will be glued to the lounge’s TVs Sunday as the Canadian Football League holds the Eastern and Western Conference Finals. Managed locally and operated by local employees, the Water’s Edge will feature the cozy lounge with its big screen TVs, WiFi Internet access, breakfast, lunch and dinner, from Thursday to Sunday, and live bands. The Water’s Edge opens Friday, November 18 and there will be a grand opening held in the pub Friday night. The Blues Healers will perform live and patrons will have a chance to tour the facility.

Broadoway seeks election Charlette Broadoway wants to see Peachland council more open with residents and is running for re-election Saturday to get that done. Broadoway was elected in a by-election in 2010 and admits, "I really didn't know what I was getting into." After a sharp learning curve, Broadoway said she is very passionate about being on council and wants to be a part of "really exciting things" that are coming up. "What we do now is going to have a major impact on Peachland forever," said Broadoway. "I want to be part of that decision making process." Broadoway said she would like to stay on the local and regional economic development committees and wants to see council start up a tourism committee. Peachland needs an economic plan that designates certain areas in town that are suitable for certain businesses, ac-

cording to Broadoway. Council is expecting the results of an economic impact study later this year and Broadoway said she wants to make sure the town follows through with the report's recommendations. "I want to see our Community Services Department follow through with recommendations in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan," she said. "I am going to push to find a suitable location and find the funding for a children's water park." Broadoway said citizens need to feel that district staff and council are there to help and wants to see staff and council be more facilitating. "Rather than the bad cop, no, no, no." "I want to see the citizens become more informed," said Broadoway.

NOTICE OF District PUBLICofHEARING Notice is hereby given that the Council of the Peachland will hold a Public Hearing to

Charlette Broadoway She added she wants to see council meetings broadcast online and would like to see council chambers set up "not like a courtroom." Council meeting times need to be changed to be more accessible to the public and Peachland should conduct regular surveys of residents like West Kelowna does, according to Broadoway.

Sidewalk and Right of Way Occupancy Policy Review and Public Information Meeting On March 22, 2011 the District of Peachland Planning and Development Services Department went to Council with a policy to regulate Sidewalk and Right of Way Occupancy. The policy presented to Council directly relates to seasonal sidewalk cafes, merchant displays, mobile vending and licensing and encroachments onto municipal property. Council decided that for the Spring and Summer of 2011 that permits would be granted on a case by case basis and that in the Fall of 2011 following the end of the tourist season a public information meeting be conducted with community stakeholders regarding the new policy. You are invited to a Public Information Meeting on November 24, 2011 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the District of Peachland Council Chambers located at the Community Centre, 4450 6th Street. A presentation will be given hourly with the first presentation at 3 p.m.

Old fashioned delivery

ovember 19 is civic election day. Peachlanders in droves will head down to the community centre to cast their ballots in the triennial quest to elect the next council and the next school trustee for our area. The run up to this election has been, at best, rather boring. We didn't have a bunch of whimsical sculptures show up a few weeks before the election to get things going. There is no single, captivating issue that has the town buzzing. Will experience trump fresh faces? In the school trustee race, Moyra Baxter, with 15 years of knowhow at the board of education table behind her, is competing against two newcomers, Lindsay Bell and Karin Cruickshank. Neither of the newcomers has been on a school board before. The result of that race will surely show how much value voters place on experience. Two candidates are vying for the mayor's chair. Lee Sawchuk has no council experience and he is running against incumbent Keith Fielding -- a candidate with three years experience at the helm, but who had no Peachland council experience when he first ran in 2008. Peachland is losing its most experienced councillor, Jean Fraser. She is not seeking re-election and her seat is being sought by both experienced and novice candidates. In total, 11 candidates are running for the six councillor seats up for grabs. The novices are Eldon Kerbes, Cindy Fortin, Eric Hall and Grant Eisworth. None of the novices has experience behind the council table, though they all have varying degrees of recognition among voters. Terry Condon and Vern Moberg have two terms in their resumes, while fellow incumbent Peter Schierbeck has one. Incumbent Lindsay Bell has one term under her wing, while fellow incumbent Charlette Broadoway is seeking re-election with a year and a half of experience. After a decade hiatus, Ken Whitelegg wants to return to council, backed by his one term of experience. And then there's Ernie Hurd, who represents perhaps the most important question that will be decided Saturday night. Hurd has two and a half terms worth of experience behind him. He would have had three terms if he hadn't resigned from council in 2010. Therein lays the biggest question of all for Saturday: Will Peachland voters forgive Hurd and give him another chance? Whatever the outcome, each and every candidate is to be commended for raising their hands and letting their names stand on the ballots. Being on council can be rewarding at times, monotonous often and downright thankless a good chunk of the time. Municipal councils are the most accessible elected officials we have. They regularly get phone calls and emails and it's difficult not to get cornered at the grocery store by an angry resident while trying to pick up a jug of milk.

Peek into the Past This plain looking building still exists but it came into use in the early 1950’s to replace the building behind it. It was the Peachland Post Office for many years until it moved to the new shopping centre on Hwy. 97. The Community Bulletin Board was right beside it. Today it is Edward Jones Investments and the bulletin board has been replaced with the Ships Ahoy fish and chips shop. On the south side of the old Post Office there still remains a wooden cover where the mail drop used to be. No postage? Post Office closed? No problem then. Just tape the correct change on the letter for a stamp, drop it in the chute and the kind postmaster would mail it for you! Photo courtesy the Peachland Historical Society

Events calendar is important Dear Editor;

I have noticed over the last few months that the community events listings have been shrinking to being almost non-existent. Since there are many events occurring in Peachland, I am assuming this is a policy with the paper. It is understandable, with the upcoming municipal elections that space is limited and as a small town paper you need to make it financially viable, but many groups rely on the events listing to promote their functions. The Peachland View should be more than a few sheets of advertising with a couple of local news stories tucked in for good measure. At one time, advertisers were found to sponsor the community calendar.

Canada Post Contract #41127536

Why couldn't a group, perhaps the realty companies, support the page? It would provide a great service to Peachlanders (who might one day be in the market to sell or purchase a home). It also might provide our newly elected municipal council with an opportunity to see what is going on in this wonderful vibrant little town and perhaps even attend some of the events. In the past their non-attendance had been noted. Only Mayor Keith Fielding and Councillors Terry Condon and Peter Schierbeck showed much interest in the small recreational activities of the community they represent. Phyllis Papineau, Peachland

Thank you to public works employee Dear Editor;

I would like to express my gratitude to one of Peachland's town workers, Andy Clements, for his honesty and integrity in finding and returning my wallet and all of its contents. My wife was in hospital and my daughter had returned from Regina with a fractured toe. I was helping her into the car to take her to the Peachland Walk -in Clinic and I put my wallet on top of the car, as I needed both hands to help her. Not realizing, I drove off down Princeton and my daughter commented she saw something black flying past the window. When we returned home, I could not find my wallet. We retraced our steps but no luck. I spent several hours searching the whole house and I had given up hope of finding it. It contained my driver’s licence, bank cards, credit cards and other important documents. I knew I couldn't visit Sue in Kelowna as I didn't have a driver’s licence anymore. I went to telephone the police, banks etc. and as I picked up the phone I heard the message bleep and thought I had better answer that call first. The call was from the Public Works Department to say that one of their drivers had almost run over my

wallet and had picked it up and handed it in to the main office. I thought, "There is a God up there!" I drove up and collected it and everything was intact. I was amazed at Andy's honesty and I have not had a chance to meet him in person to thank him. I later left a card and a small thank you present for him. Peachland's town workers keep our town immaculate and they are hardly ever acknowledged. They are our unseen workers doing jobs that many of us might feel were beneath us, with rarely any recognition. I would like to thank all of them for their hard work and efforts, but especially Andy. You have restored my faith in mankind. If it had not been for your honesty, I would have been up the proverbial creek with a stainless steel paddle! Thank you seems rather weak in the circumstances. No alternatives to school recess issue Dear Editor;

Regarding the article in the November 11, 2011 Peachland View 'Bell seeks two seats'. I want to address Lindsay Bell's comment regarding the cancellation of the 15 minute recess and her statement that, "The teachers just made this decision and didn't leave any room for alternatives." Teachers are refusing to supervise before and after school, and at recess, as part of their legal job action. The board of education and senior staff are obviously concerned about student safety, and so we are covering before and after school supervision by having our exempt staff go to schools and help the principal (and vice-principal if there is one) cover supervision. Exempt staff are those who do not belong to a union and are in an administrative position. This includes staff from the School Board Office, (including the superintendent, assistant superintendent, and secretarytreasurer) and from the operations department. We have estimated that the cost of covering this supervision (in lost hours of work by our administrative staff) is over $19,000 a week. Not to mention the strain it is putting on them. Because they are away from their normal duties before and after school, it would be impractical and unreasonable to expect them to also cover recess supervision. They would get even less of their normal work done and they are already being stretched to the limit.

Peachland

Cancelling recess was not taken lightly by the superintendent or the board; we believe that recess is an important part of a child's school day. It was discussed at several Public Board Meetings and determined to be the only way to deal with the situation. As the job action has been going on since September 6, it has cost us over $180,000 in lost productivity. Paying for other workers to do the supervision at recess would not only add to the expense but would also be against the collective agreement. I hope this clarifies that teachers did not just make this decision and really, there were no alternatives. It was an administrative decision, supported by the trustees, and discussed in public meetings, open to anyone interested in this matter in particular, or in our public education system in general. It is unfortunate that Ms. Bell did not research this matter before making her statement. Moyra Baxter, School Trustee

Advocacy, fundraising tops for candidate Cruickshank

Karin Cruickshank Karin Cruickshank says she wants to be a school trustee on the School District #23 Board of Education to become an advocate for students and to restore funding to a broken education system. "Underfunding was the highest recorded comment from the general public when I asked them about our current education system," said Cruickshank. "We have some systemic problems." Cruickshank said she promises to lobby all levels of government for a restoration of the value of education of children and

to work towards an educational model that fits current needs. "As a parent of a child with autism, I am well acquainted with the needs of advocacy and fundraising," said Cruickshank. "I would like to bring unification and awareness for the needs of children in the Central Okanagan and in that process, bring the needs of students with special challenges to light," said Cruickshank. She said her main priorities if elected will be: * It takes a community to raise a child. Increase awareness of the need to work together as a regional/provincial community to meet our children's needs; * Promote diversity and health in our community. Promote the concept that each child is born with special gifts and 'to edu-

cate' means to 'draw out' these gifts; * Pursue 'ways and means' to increase funding for the education system; * Safe schools. Cruickshank said she is a proactive parent with a history of professional involvement and calls herself a team worker. "I'm dedicated to collaboration between home and school," said Cruickshank. "I'm passionate about making a difference in the name of education, family and children." She said she has the awareness of what is wrong with the current education system and the willingness to take on challenges in that system. "I'm approachable and willing to listen and learn," said Cruickshank.

Together we can make a difference Please vote for me

Lee Sawchuk MAYOR

At a professional conference in Vancouver, I met some people from the Kelowna area and then became interested in the Okanagan. After myself and my family visited the area we fell in love with Peachland and moved here in 2005. We are building our new life together in this wonderful little community. "Lee the Plumber" was the guy you called on to set new things up, make old things work better and to get everything working together properly. "Lee the Mayor" will do the same thing, encourage new business, help established businesses prosper, get all various segments of Peachland's population, young and old, working and retired, progressive and conservative working together for the betterment of Peachland.

It doesn't matter if you are 18, 98 or somewhere in between, your opinions are valuable to me. I need your help and your vote on November 19th. Sincerely

My name is Lee Sawchuk, but you may know me better as "Lee the Plumber".

I would greatly appreciate you taking a few minutes to let me know your thoughts about our town and what we can do to improve our life-style here in Peachland.

Memorial Service for Dorothy “Dot” Flintoff

A memorial service will be held for Dot Flintoff on Saturday, November 26th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peachland United Church, with a reception to follow from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. in the Peachland 50 Plus Activity Centre, 5672 Beach Avenue. This is a life that is certainly worthy of celebration! Born in Vancouver to parents Lucy and George Watts, Dot moved to her beloved Peachland in 1946 with husband Archie. She was always an unabashed ambassador for her town!

One of Dot’s gifts was an innate ability to connect with people, which won her many

friends and admirers over the years. Her positive “can-do” attitude, curiosity, and love of family have been a powerful source of inspiration and guidance for all of us, and especially her precious granddaughters. What a role model! Dot made it a point to work hard and to play hard throughout her life, and it can truly be said that she enjoyed herself, immensely!

Even in her mid ‘90’s she was a pole walker, a carpet bowler, a Tai Chi practitioner, a voracious reader, and a frequent shopper in search of the “best deal” a skill she honed in the Depression Era. Dot never missed a BC Lions game, and usually had a lot of “advice” for Coach Buono. She was heartbroken when the Vancouver Canucks lost in the Stanley Cup final, but, not surprisingly, was convinced that this would be their year. She also enjoyed frequent visits to her favourite restaurant, Gasthaus on the Lake, where the staff always greeted her with a smile and a bowl of

french onion soup – her favourite dish!

For the past 16 years Dot was a resident of Chateau on the Lake, where she enjoyed meaningful friendships with her neighbours. Dot’s family would like to acknowledge and thank all of them, but would be remiss if we did not single out Dot and Vern Moberg and Dick and Joan Menzies, who literally became part of Dot’s extended family. Dot was very generous with many charities, and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the charity of one’s choice. While Dot has passed from this life, her legacy here lives on and she will never be forgotten. We love you Dot!
