Keith Fielding won the race for mayor in Saturday's civic election, gaining nearly 63 per cent of the vote, compared to rival Lee Sawchuk's 37 per cent. Fielding will begin his second term as Peachland's mayor in December and he will be joined at the council table by three incumbents and three newcomers. Incumbents Terry Condon, Peter Schierbeck and Vern Moberg, in that order, received the highest percentage of councillor votes cast and they were followed by newcomers Cindy Fortin, Eric Hall and Eldon Kerbes. All six winners in the councillor contest received votes from at least 50 per cent of voters casting ballots. (Kerbes brought in 50 per cent of the vote, while Condon brought in the highest percentage at 65 per cent.) Charlette Broadoway, who broke into the Peachland municipal election scene just last year in a by-election, lost her seat to Kerbes by just 19 votes. Grant Eisworth, Ken Whitelegg and incumbent Lindsay Bell all

fared worse, gaining just 39 per cent, 30 per cent and 24 per cent of the vote respectively. Dead last was councillor candidate Ernie Hurd, who received just 208, or 13 per cent, of the vote. Hurd was elected as councillor in 2008. He resigned in 2010 after voters turned down borrowing $1.3 million to build a curling rink in a referendum. A total of 11 candidates ran for the six Peachland councillor seats up for grabs. Of the 11 candidates, five were incumbents, two were former councillors attempting to get back into council and six were newcomers. School trustee for Zone II was voted on by Peachlanders, people living on Westbank First Nation lands and in the Central Okanagan West electoral area. Moyra Baxter won by a landslide, taking nearly 69 per cent of the vote. Rivals for school trustee Karin Cruickshank and Lindsay Bell did not manage to receive even half the votes that Baxter did. Peachland has been long held as a bastion of civic minded people who get out to vote in droves, but the results from the community Continued on page 2

showed there were 3,995 people living in Peachland who were 18 or older and were Canadian citizens. It is expected that the town’s population increased between 2006 and 2011. Even if one uses the 2006 census number, Saturday’s voter turnout was low. With 1,549 people voting out of 3,995, the voter turnout rate would be 38.8 per cent. In past years, the district has used as a guide that half the population is eligible to vote. If that is used, then 1,549 voters out of a possible 2,500 (2006 census number) equals 62 per cent.

centre polling station paint a different picture. Just 1,549 people voted in Peachland’s 2011 civic election, the lowest voter turnout in the last four elections. In 2002, about 2050 Peachlanders voted. That number dropped to 1,749 in 2005, then bounced up to 1,850 in 2008. Saturday’s numbers were 16.3 per cent lower than three years ago. Figuring out what percentage of voters cast a ballot is a little difficult. Although there was a census conducted this year, the results are not yet out. The 2006 census

If you’re putting up new LED lights this year, don’t throw your old light strings in the garbage. Simply take your old strings to a recycling depot near you. Last year’s Christmas light recycling program alone collected over seven metric tonnes of light strings, enough to fill a 53-foot semi trailer, said Rae Stewart, waste reduction facilitator with the regional district. Stewart said this is the sixth year the recycling

depots have been accepting light strings, and power cords are also accepted as part of the program. The strings brought to the depots are picked up by Planet Earth Recycling Ltd, delivered to Davis Trading in Vancouver, baled and exported for processing, where the copper is recovered for new use in wiring and plumbing. The nearest depot is located at the Westside Residential Recycling Center, Asquith Rd, open daily from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

Bereavement support at Peachland Wellness Centre that life will never again be worthwhile. Some survivors wish only to retreat into themselves, hoping that the pain will go away. New emotions start to emerge: anger, despair and constant sadness. There is a very practical way to seek help in the midst of all these uncertain feelings. It is to find a bereavement support group that meets your needs. There are several of these in the Okanagan area, all with slightly different meeting formats. Some are more structured than others in their approach to helping with grief recovery. Attendance at a bereavement support group opens the door to many learning experiences. Groups are usually led by experienced facilitators, who guide each

Coping with the loss of a loved one is a devastating, emotional and hugely uncomfortable experience. It is usually a topic kept in the background of our consciousness, because frankly, it is not something we ever wish to deal with, even though we realize that for most of us, losing loved ones is an inevitable part of life. After the first shock of the finality of death, the raw process of grief begins. Often it is very difficult to even function somewhat normally with the confusion of overwhelming sadness, well-intentioned people offering conflicting advice and opinions and the feeling

No to sound system repairs, for now

Cheryl Wiebe by Dave Preston Taxpayers spent just over $1,500 this fall to find out what everyone already knew: The community centre's sound system is awful. In September, council approved spending $1,506 on a professional sound analysis of the community centre' gym and Sensory Perception conducted the analysis on October 10.

Peachland

TELEPHONE

The company determined that: * The room has too many reflective hard surfaces; * The house sound system is not the best for the spoken word; * Microphones used are mediocre; * The existing portable system is good for outdoors but is not suitable for a large venue. "Much of this information we knew," Cheryl Wiebe, director of community services, told council Tuesday. "The value of the report is that we now know conclusively why we have had issues with speech intelligibility in the room." Fixing the sound problems in the community centre would be a costly endeavour, with the research company giving an estimate of more than $60,000. To be done right, the company says all ceiling tiles should be replaced with acoustical tiles, the side walls should have acoustical treatment applied and new sound equipment purchased. Wiebe suggested a different alternative to council, however. According to Wiebe, there are only about a half dozen major events in the community centre hall each

2012

year and several recent events had no major sound problems because an outside technician ran his own sound system. Because there are limited events requiring a great system, Wiebe suggested the district continue to use the services of a trained professional, with his own sound system, at a cost of about $500 per event. Council agreed. In other council news, council has appointed a number of people to two committees. Joining the Economic Development Committee are Charlette Broadoway, Gord Thorne, David Stuart and Darci Yeo. Greg Byrnes and Gord Thorne were also appointed to the Advisory Planning Committee and Moe Martin was appointed as the next member, once space becomes available on the committee.

Editor’s Perspective

Peek into the Past

Surprise, no surprise

T

he election has run its course, the people voted, and the officials have been chosen. The talk around town is, as always after an election, "What do you think of the results?" From my standpoint, there were few surprises as a result of the vote, save for one: the ousting of Charlette Broadoway. With barely a year under her belt at the council table, Broadoway made no major mistakes as councillor. She came across as caring, interested and not willing to simply accept what others said. It was surprising that Broadoway did not make it. It may just boil down to the simple fact that, because of weather, apathy or the lack of a real meaty issue to get everyone's blood boiling, voter turnout was down. Broadoway missed the cut by just 19 votes. Unfortunately, almost doesn't cut it when it comes to elections. Almost was never in the cards for Ernie Hurd. There was no surprise attached to his not gaining a council seat and it was no surprise that he came in dead last. Hurd had as much chance of being elected after thumbing his nose at residents in 2010 as Bob Harriman would have had if he had run for re-election after bestowing the awful Barone sculptures on the town in 2005. There was also no surprise in the re-election of Moyra Baxter. She is not only a 15-year veteran of the board of education table; she is a force to be reckoned with. One concern prior to the election was that new boundaries chosen for school trustees to represent may have put Peachland in a disadvantage. Peachland used to elect its own trustee. As of this year, Peachland is lumped in with WFN and the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area. By the numbers, the other Westside areas contain twice as many potential voters as Peachland. This town's votes for school trustee could have been dwarfed by a strong showing elsewhere. Alas, it was not to be. It was no great surprise that Peachland ruled the school board vote. Of the 1,880 votes cast for Zone II trustee, 78 per cent were cast in Peachland. In fact, the number of votes Baxter received just from Peachland was more than all of the other votes combined. There were no great surprises with the results of the council election. At the end of the day, you just never know what voters will do. Peachland now has a mixed council when it comes to experience and, perhaps, fresh ideas. Keith Fielding was re-elected mayor but he only has three years experience behind him. Terry Condon and Vern Moberg are now the senior council members (experience wise). Eldon Kerbes, Eric Hall and Cindy Fortin are all newbies and Peter Schierbeck rounds out the group with one term under his wing. Now the analysis is done. On December 6, the seven newly elected council members will swear their oaths. Then the work begins, again.

Hoisting the cenotaph The Peachland Memorial Cenotaph wasn’t always on the lake side of Beach Avenue. In the early 1970s it was lifted from its original location on the boulevard on Second Street in front of the Branch 69 Legion and rededicated in it’s present location. The shops along the south side of Second Street filled in the space. The present location was first a CPR wharf with a freight shed and then filled in. One year the space was briefly a community skating rink. Today it is beautifully landscaped in memory of our greatest loss per capita in the First World War. We should have the right to die Dear Editor;

I read an article this morning about a woman by the name of Gloria Taylor who is attending the Supreme Court of Canada on Monday to argue against present laws that make it a criminal offense to help terminally ill people from ending their own lives. I was painfully reminded of witnessing my loving and wonderful grandfather endure and suffer through a long and agonizing death. This experience was something neither I, nor any of my family, will ever forget. It will lay heavy in our hearts forever. I remember asking the doctor in the hospital, "Is there nothing you can do to remove him from his severe pain? The morphine is not helping him! We know he's dying. Can't you just give him an injection?" The doctor looked at me as if I were crazy, like I wanted to murder my grandfather or something. Since that time I have often wondered how in an

Canada Post Contract #41127536

evolved and civilized society we can possibly still allow this to happen. Apparently the government is concerned about those who might force an assisted suicide on a family member and then take their inheritance. Unbelievable. Surely there are laws or medical boards that can protect terminally ill patients from inheritance fraud. Perhaps it’s just too much work to legislate? Let's just allow our loved ones, and perhaps ourselves one day soon, to continue to suffer much more than we would ever allow our pets to. Gloria Taylor has Lou Gehrigís Disease and is fighting to be allowed to die in a humane, painless and dignified manner. Please help support her and Farewell Solutions Foundation with your thoughts and prayers and join me in the fight for the right to die. Lynne Taylor Donovan, Peachland

Bell felt bashed by letter writers

Dear Editor;

Between Marion Irving's comments and Moyra Baxter's comments about my opinions in the View and Westside paper, I find it very unkind of these two women to be so blatantly cruel to a person. I don't even know if Moyra writing to the paper regarding alternatives to recess goes against any legislation during election time. If Moyra asked what I thought the alternative was, I would have told her, volunteers. There are many of us who would have gladly helped out to keep our children's recess going, or in other ways in the school to free time up so teachers could monitor recess. How unfortunate Moyra had to bash me one day before the election; goes to character. As for Marion Irving's malicious comments regarding my own opinion of the extinction of dogs deemed dangerous, she was also very unkind and it was unnecessarily brought out during election time. It was

darn right mean. During a political election, we are asked our opinions and we develop certain platforms and one of mine was dangerous dogs and the eventual extinction of them in our society. There are many articles stating with expert training dogs such as the pit bull remain safe. These dogs were bred to fight! But this was my opinion and platform during the election, plain and simple. Not everyone needs to agree, but as decent human beings we respect that others have different opinions and every right to have them. Wowsers, do I ever have a target on my back. If I don't get voted in, then ladies your mission was accomplished. If I do get voted in, then I will continue to be faithful to my convictions and be kind and respectful to others who don't share the same opinion as mine.

Seeing things differently Dear Editor; My husband and I just attended the Peachland Wellness Centre Speaker Series on 'Natural Vision Improvement' by Joy Thompson. We were, along with almost everyone else there, totally unaware that one could improve your eyesight naturally. We both wear glasses and were delighted to find out we may be able to

improve our eyesight to the point where we may not have to wear them as often, if at all. We plan to learn much more about this subject and would like to take this opportunity to thank the Peachland Wellness Centre for hosting such an informative event. Steve & Lisa Spalleck

Hurd "calling it a day" Dear Editor; I want to first thank the 200-plus people who supported me in this election. Thanks for still believing in me, even though I let you down by quitting. I will hold no grudges against the A.B.E. (anybody but Ernie group). You had your reasons. I was hoping for some forgiveness but by the result it was not there. C'est la vie. It has been an up and down, 15-year ride. I have enjoyed every minute serving this community in the capacity of

municipal councillor, but I am calling it a day. I remember a football game I played in while attending KSS in the late 60s. We played one of the top ranked teams from the coast and were absolutely clobbered 42 to 0. I approached this year's election the same way. I knew I was going to get clobbered but I decided to play the game anyway. Thanks for the memories. Ernie Hurd, Peachland

Thanks to all for running Dear Editor;

for this week is that although it’s great to congratulate those elected, let’s also take time to thank those not elected for being part of the campaign. They helped to make it happen.

At the all candidates meeting, I said that, in my opinion, there are not winners and losers after an election. There are those elected and those not elected, because everyone who runs is a winner. Eric Hall, Peachland I do believe that. Having been in the not elected category in 2008, I know how it feels. If you are not elected, it is hard not to take it personally, not to think that it is a verdict on you as a person, rather than a question of politics. So, on Monday morning, I feel grateful to all those voters who supported me, but I also think about those who didn’t make the cut. Some will say never again and some will say I’ll try again. But all candidates deserve a thank you. If it had been an acclamation instead of an election, we wouldn’t have had the chance to learn the views of our mayor and council. We have learned a lot. We can thank Dave Preston for playing a big part in shining a spotlight on the issues and the candidates. He worked hard to get information out to the voters. During the election campaign, Peachland residents were able to focus on some key issues. Some new questions have been raised. It is up to the new council to find the answers. New Winter Hours One thing is certain: the Hours: Mon. - Fri. 11:30 - Close answers we get will please Sat. & Sun. 9:30 am - Close some people and upset others. So my thought

When it comes to family, you can never be too safe Carbon monoxide (CO) can be highly dangerous, partly because it’s odourless and invisible. Yet with a few extra precautions, you can help keep your family safe. Have your natural gas appliances inspected regularly and install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

Peachland bouts a knockout Contributed Almost 300 boxers, coaches and members of the public attended the Peachland rumble last Saturday night and received more than the scheduled 12 bouts. "There was a time a week ago when we were down to only seven bouts. Then snow hit the Coquihalla Friday night and with boxers coming from Prince George, Cranbrook and Vancouver, we thought it was going to be tough to pull the card off," said John Wardley, head coach of the Peachland Boxing Club. "The Prince George boxing team had a particularly tough journey that took 12.5 hours, but every club that said they would come, came. An hour before the doors opened to the public I drove to Staples to make 300 program copies for the event, with 11 confirmed bouts," said Wardley. "By the time I got back to the venue, the other coaches had made up a total of 17 bouts. The options were we go with what the program states, or, we change the official program and that would allow all the boxers that could get bouts the opportunity to get into the ring. It was a bit confusing for the crowd using the programs with 11 bouts, but to have kids drive so far in inclement weather and not get this opportunity just did not seem fair, so 17 bouts it was," Wardley said. Announcer Paul Giroday opened the event by introducing the officials: five new BC Boxing officials and referees from Peachland, including himself and Jesse Joseph (who is now the youngest boxing official in Canada). The others being Paul Durand, Chris Hildebrand and Lorne Takenaka. Peachland's Patrick Livingston was first across the canvas against Revelstoke's AJ LeRose. This was an exhibition bout with Patrick never having a match before and AJ having 15 bouts. Patrick was totally exhausted after the three two-minute rounds, as we ex-

pected. When a boxer trains in the gym for a bout, they must train almost every day, three weeks minimum beforehand. This is not hockey, where you ask the coach to switch you when you’re tired. The two nights a week and some extra sparring sessions can only prepare you for about three quarters of the energy you’re going to need in a full matched bout so we asked Revelstoke for an exhibition with an experienced boxer to get Patrick in the ring. Peachland's Eric Hahn-Hill boxed against Thistle Town's Austin Riggs. Eric gave all he had but the lack of extra training outside the gym quickly became apparent with Riggs throwing hard hooks to the body and head. Eric does not have the same power, he needs to keep his distance and use his longer jab scoring then stepping away. The decision went to Riggs after three tough rounds. It was Hahn-Hill's first loss since winning in Salmon Arm in June. Reece Waterfield had his first bout against Revelstoke's super heavy weight 202lb Dawson Hill. Waterfield was giving away about 14 lbs to the taller Hill, also in the ring for the first time. Wardley had instructed Reese to take the first round easy and feel out his opponent. That was the plan until Hill came out and caught Reese with a hard combination to the head. That quickly changed the game plan and Waterfield shock his head and put Hill on the canvas after 25 seconds. Hill came back but now the Peachlander was after blood and the referee stopped the contest after 45 seconds of the first round. Waterfield winner by RSC (Referee Stopped Contest). Wardley thanks The Peachland Lions Club, who ran a hot meals concession, and those who stayed to help put chairs away and take down the ring. The Peachland Boxing Club runs classes every Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fourth Street Place gym in Peachland.

Legion kitchen open for business, election on tap by Patricia Day Special to theView The kitchen of Legion Branch 69 is open! Did you know that you can enjoy a meal and karaoke on Saturday nights? Anita begins her entertainment at 1930 hours. Come in for the Meat Draw at 1500 hours and stay for a great time with friends. Say hi to Ron, who is wearing the chef's apron, when you drop in. Please give the Legion a call to check out other times when food is being served (250-7679100.) Did you know that you could have your Christmas party or other events at the Legion? Chandra will be delighted to make the arrangements for you. What are you doing Grey Cup day? That is this Sunday, you know. Plans are being made for you to enjoy watching the game at Branch 69. The fun starts at 1400 hours. So come on down and reserve your seat to have fun and watch the Lions roar! Pelma, Donna and Scott did a great job creating a chicken stew for those who enjoyed the hospitality on Remembrance Day. The leftover stew was given to a homeless shelter for others to also enjoy. On November 10, the Colour Party of Branch 69 visited four local schools: Shannon Lake, Glenrosa, Helen Gorman and Peachland Elementary. The Colour Party consisted of Graham George, Ted and Donna Cave, Mabel Sorensen, Pat Bolton, and David Warren as well as President Jean Saul. When the Colour Party entered the gym, the sea of youngsters, proudly wearing their red poppies, did indeed make one feel honoured to be a Canadian. Each school had a different program

but the pride and respect for the fallen soldiers were the same. Each school was invited to compete in a competition by the Legion for the creation of poetry, posters and essays. The winners from Branch 69 are: Natalie Schmidt, black and white poster (Glenrosa), Caleb Enns, colour poster (Glenrosa) and Katalina Dobson, poetry (Helen Gorman). It was a difficult decision for the judges to determine the winners. Many thanks to all the students who participated in this competition. The winners' creations are being judged at the zone level, and from there, may enter the provincial level, should they win at zone. Did you witness the flypast? They were from Penticton and flew over about 10:30 in the morning. There were many who made November 11 a day to remember. To the cadets who stood guard and took part in the service, the Boxing Club who set up the chairs, the Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders, and Job's Daughters a salute and our thanks. To Patti, for the organization of wreaths; Donna and Wayne for the poppy drive; Donna D., Pelma and Scott for the work in the kitchen, and to all of you who made this day significant for all who remember, thank you. Many of the community showed that they cared during our recent benefit and to all of you who donated goods, time and effort, thank you. Yes, Peachlanders do have big hearts. Don't forget the election of the new executive on Monday, November 28. Save you a seat? Meeting begins at 1930 hours.

open daily THE LANAI Ladies Boutique, winner of the 2011 "Excellence in a Retail Business award" I recognize how incredibly blessed I am to own a business here in Peachland and to have the tremendous support (in all regards) of the community! I too am so very fortunate to have such dedicated, enthusiastic, supportive and loving staff....whom I sincerely love, appreciate and admire. That said, the greatest reward are the many friendships we at "THE LANAI" have developed!

Happy Cow takes top honour Contributed The Happy Cow Café was named business of the year at the Business Excellence Awards Night Saturday, hosted by the Peachland Chamber of Commerce at the 50 Plus Activity Centre. Again, for the third year in a row, the event was sold out. More than 130 guests attended the Hats Off to Success gala. The award winners were: Business of the Year - Happy Cow Café A first for Peachland, providing gluten free and dairy free healthy choice foods for people who cannot eat regular wheat, rye or barley products. Wendy has worked tirelessly and long hours to bring this business from a dream to a sustainable new business. Business Person of the Year - Walter Huber, Hainle Vineyards Chosen for his single-handed turn around of an average winery business, to the number one rank for wineries in Canada. Hainle has also achieved the ranking of Top 1% of all wineries in the World. This is a staggering accomplishment for a small winery from the small town of Peachland. Excellence in Trades - DJ Plumbing

A trades mainstay in Peachland for 15 years. Dan provides excellent service and quality work and is a big part of our community support. Excellence in Service - Karen’s Place Created a special atmosphere for customers and provides the latest in products and techniques to loyal customers. tists has explained, the office is magical. Excellence in Tourism - Peachland Visitor Centre Done an excellent job promoting Peachland. Over 10,000 visitors came through the door this year and what they experience from the staff is in large part, why they stay and why they return. Community Booster - Treegroup Has helped enabled us to achieve a much higher and professional level of the marketing of Peachland. We now have a professional marketing brand, which has been the talk of the tourism industry. Rising Star - Pack n Stack With his idea of using special stackable plastic moving boxes, Ashley Burnell has kept cardboard out of the landfill and given people on the move an easy, environmentally friendly alternative. Honourable mention must be given to Zip Zone. Over 9,000 visitors had the thrill of flying over the canyon in upper Princeton. This is sure to be the premier tourist attraction for Peachland. There was a great silent auction as well as a boisterous live auction which featured our famous local auctioneer Darci Yeo from Bliss Bakery and her able assistant Barry.

Thank you for voting us the Rising Star in the recent 2011 Business Excellence Awards

There were 50 diamond ring boxes sold. They featured a single band with multiple diamonds across it. The ring was made by our new local jeweller, Jasmine Custom Jewellers and the winner was Ruth Marquet from Johnston Meier Insurance. The dinner menu was a fabulous Taste of Peachland which had Rocky J's provide salads and appetizers, Bliss Bakery providing decadent desserts and the Happy Cow Café providing the entree dinner choices. There was no shortage of unbelievably good food. Once the Excellence Awards presentations were completed, the Blues Brothers and their show band Blues Brother 2 were quick to hit the stage with good old rock and roll, playing until midnight. Special thanks must be given to both Janice Hancharuk and Darlene Hartford for their amazing theme decorations. Special thanks must also go out to the approximately 30 volunteers who helped on organizational committees, set up and clean up. To all the businesses who contributed gifts and prizes, a very big thank you.

The countdown for the Christmas Lights will

begin with the arrival of the parade and Santa Claus taking the stage, with the lights coming on at 6:15 pm.
