Whether you are here in Peachland visiting and exploring our town or just viewing this visitor guide from afar you are in for a treat.

Planning a trip to Peachland can be just as fun as visiting. And those who visit for a short day trip or a longer stay can attest to the enjoyable time they spent here. To plan a visit start by surfing our www.DestinationPeachland.com visitor website. Also search “Peachland” on YouTube for interesting local videos. You will start to get a feel for why Peachland is worth your time to visit.

Peachland is unique in the Okanagan, we are situated along the western most elbow of Lake Okanagan. This provides us with favourable weather, beautiful morning sunrises and gorgeous vistas of the moon rising over the lake – you could say we are ‘enchanted’ or certainly blessed to live here. Happy people are friendly people, and you will find both here in Peachland.

We have a long meandering waterfront available for all to enjoy offering many opportunities to take a stroll or sit and relax at many of our fine restaurants and coffee shops. We are a small charming town yet we have three boat launches for accessing Lake Okanagan and miles of shoreline. Visit our Historic Peachland Primary School, housing a beautiful art gallery featuring local artists and a unique visitor centre that specializes in bats!

The visitor centre houses the Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre. We have bats in the attic of the school by the thousands! That means not many mosquitos in our town. In the summertime dozens of people watch the ‘bat exodus’ at dusk as they go on the hunt for food. Sounding more and more like a place you would like to visit?

But wait, there’s more!

We have roadways that disappear up into the quiet hillsides beckoning you to come and explore. In literally a minute or two you are in quiet neighbourhoods whose residents en-

joy spectacular vistas of the lake and valley.

Many of our award winning bed and breakfasts are up on the hillside tucked away in their own oasis.

Further up the road is nature at its best – quiet forest with roads and trails for the off-road vehicle to explore. There’s many recreational activities such the huge ZipZone zip-line, ATV rentals, fishing camps with cabins, secret meadows with flowers, and camping for free on some lakes. If you have a ‘Tom Sawyer’ spirit upper Peachland and the wilderness above will seem like heaven for you! It’s a vast playground.

Connect With The Lake

In Peachland, fun on the beach continues long after the summer is over. Waking to another cloudless day, park downtown and enjoy 11 kilometers of unfettered pristine pebble beach. Head over to Swim Bay, leap off the dock and dive into the wild blue of Lake Okanagan. The crisp, cool water takes the edge off the heat, and you float along, weightless, contemplating your next adventure.

Stand-up paddle boarding

As you emerge from the lake refreshed, you may decide to try one of North America’s fastest growing water sports: stand-up paddle boarding, often abbreviated to SUP. Peachland has seen the sport, which combines surfing and kayak skills, manoeuvre from obscurity into popularity over the past three years, and enthusiasm is growing for this activity.

And if you’re looking for a relaxing, low-impact workout, why not try SUP yoga, which is offered in Peachland during the summer months.

Ogopogo

Calling all mystery lovers! Lake “monsters” have been reported by thousands of people over the years in all parts of the world. But do they really exist? There’s only one way to find out, if you dare! Grab your boat, board, canoe or kayak and have your own aquatic adventure. Across from Peachland’s serene shores lies Rattlesnake Island, the home of Canada’s most famous water monster, Ogopogo of Lake Okanagan.

Estimated to be anywhere between 20 and 50 meters in length with a slender, undulating, snake-like body, Ogopogo has been reported as having a large, wide-jawed head and multiple fins, which can occasionally be seen just above the surface of the water, circling the island, as if protecting it. Is she real? There’s only one way to find out!

Family fun

Summer is the perfect time for high quality family fun and spending the summer on the water is something that everyone from the kids to the grandparents can enjoy! From the May long weekend to Labour Day, Swim Bay is the best place to dive, dip, zip and sunbathe along the waterfront. It’s

the only lifeguard protected beach in the Okanagan Valley and it is also equipped with concession stands, public washrooms, change rooms and picnic tables.

Swim Bay is conveniently located near downtown Peachland, with shopping and dining just steps away. Looking for something a little more low-key? Visit Antlers Beach. Located at the south end of Beach Avenue and across from Hardy Falls Regional Park, Antlers Beach is the perfect place to cool off with a swim or some surfing and enjoy a picnic lunch before your next activity.

Family fishing

The lake is home to several species of fish, including rainbow trout and Kokanee. The trout are a distinct species called Kamloops trout. The lake also contains carp, and turbot, which are found mainly by Rattlesnake Island. The streams and lakes are

full of rainbow trout and a speckled brook trout. And once you’re fished out, fresh water clams can be found at Commando Bay across the lake.

Fun for Fido

Peachland is pet-friendly.

You’ve had your fun, now let Fido have his. Grab a ball or Frisbee and take your pet for a swim on one of our two off-leash dog-friendly beaches.

Located at Highway 97 and Princeton Avenue, Doggy Beach is a great place to take your pooch for a swim. Pets are also welcome off-leash in the water at Strachan’s Corner at 8th Street, just remember to leash them at the shore.

Dogs are also welcome off-leash at MacKinnon Park, WA Lang Park, and Sanderson Park.

Experience Adrenaline and Excitement For action seekers

Pack your gear and set off for your adventure around one of British Columbia’s most breathtaking landscapes! Peachland is a unique destination for those who seek an adventure above or under the water.

Kayaking, canoeing, surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, water skiing, zip lining and skateboarding are just a few options for anyone wishing to experience the freedom and excitement the town offers.

Polar Bear Swim

Imagine being a part of all the chills and thrills of the Peachland Polar Bear Swim on January 1 at Swim Bay. It’s not just an event, it’s an experience that has become a winter-time tradition for hundreds of warm-hearted plungers from across the country.

Surfing

British Columbia has earned international acclaim as a top surfing destination. Antlers Beach, our biggest surf spot, may not boast a tropical climate, but wetsuits take the chill out of cold-water surfing. Rugged wilderness and great amenities, locally owned restaurants and wineries make Peachland a one-of-a-kind surf destination.

Zip lining

Are you having a love affair with adrenaline? Allow yourself to fall head over heels— literally! This is what it feels like to be alive!

Take a free-fall leap from the top of an 80 foot pole perched at the top of a 300 foot

canyon or soar across Peachland Creek, through pristine woods and rolling hills, on one of six of Canada’s highest zip lines at ZipZone. Their lines are so high they needed special permission from Transport Canada to install them. Planes can actually fly beneath them! You’ll wonder whether the pounding in your ears comes from your thumping heart or the wind whistling past you.

Enjoy Peachland all year long

“WOW!” is something you’ll hear daily in Peachland. With its luscious trails, sprawling mountains and sparkling blue lake, Peachland is nirvana for people who enjoy the outdoors year-round. The new outdoor fitness trail and skate park perfectly complement the existing tennis court making it a place for people of all ages to enjoy being active. Blaze your own trail and go on an ATV adventure into the back country hills, snowshoe and cross country ski on Wilson Lake, toboggan and skate at Turner Park or ice fish in pristine lakes.

Peachland’s trails

From the picturesque beachfront and heritage walks on level pavement to the rugged, steeper trails of the hillsides, Peachland has trails to accommodate every level of ability, from the casual walker to the avid, experienced hiker.

For the casual walker

Centennial Way: Located on beautiful Beach Avenue from 1st - 13th Streets, Centennial Way is named in honour of Peachland’s 100th anniversary. This is undoubtedly the most popular of all Peachland’s trails. Every morning you’ll find power walkers, joggers and inline skaters plying their way along against the backdrop of Lake Okanagan.

Hint: it’s also a great place to stop for an afternoon swim or a casual picnic.

Hardy Falls: Listen to the melodious sound of trickling water and chirping birds as you wind your way into the canyon of Deep

Creek in the south part of Peachland. This walk crosses several bridges and follows wooden riffles that provide spawning areas for the Kokanee salmon as they travel up the creek in the fall.

Heritage Park: Take a peek into Peachland’s

Bring a first aid kit, map and compass or GPS. Bring a flashlight, matches, and a blanket.

Bring spare clothes in case of changing weather.

Stay on trails to reduce trampling.

Do not feed wildlife and leave flowers, plants and rocks where you found them.

Pick up after pets and bring back your litter.

Let someone know where you’re going.

Cell phones might not be working everywhere.

Be bear and cougar ready! You’re entering their territory!

past. Begin at the Visitor Centre, located inside the Peachland Historic Primary School and follow Beach Avenue to Heritage Park.

On this scenic walk you can visit the oneroom historic Peachland Little Schoolhouse, the Cenotaph, the Bumps, the Peachland Museum, Peachland’s historic mural, and Cousins Park, to name a few.

Turner Park: Peachland is an active community. And if you’re into sports, this is a particularly good winter destination for you to enjoy hockey or ice-skating once the weather is cool enough to allow the outdoor rink to freeze.

Lambly Park: Lambly Park (located across from Peachland Mall) offers something for everyone. Fans of racquet sports can enjoy a friendly game of tennis. Need something for the kids to do? Peachland has a clean, safe and new skateboard park for the young or the young at heart to try out, while senior visitors may wish to use the outdoor fitness circuit to stay fit while away from home.

For the serious hiker

Nestled in the elbow of Lake Okanagan and surrounded on three sides by valleys and mountains, Peachland definitely caters to the more adventurous hiker.

Stave Pipe Trail: Take a walk into the past on Peachland’s historic Stave Pipe trail. This trail, which originally helped to generate hydro-electric power, was a project that resulted in Peachland incorporating as a municipality in 1909. In 1938, the original wooden dam was replaced by a concrete one and the power plant continued to operate until 1947. The best access place for this walk is to start at the Peachland Elementary School. Look for the Regional District sign just outside the fence that is on the left hand side of the entrance car park at the school. The walk takes you behind the school and then follows the lower section of Trepanier Creek. A walk of approximately 1.3 km will take you to the falls lookout for a view of the old dam. This makes a good turn-around point.

Pincushion Mountain: There is an old saying in Peachland that claims you cannot call yourself a true Peachlander until you’ve climbed Pincushion Mountain. This rugged trail is demanding. Rife with steep sections and gravel, it’s one of Peachland’s most challenging trails but it also offers the reward of an unparalleled view of Okanagan Lake and the surrounding valley. Be sure to wear your hiking boots and bring a walking stick.

Trepanier Forest: Although not currently a circular walk, it includes several kilometres of dense forest with huge Ponderosa pine trees. The trail can be accessed via 6th Avenue and Ponderosa Place. Alternatively, drive up the Trepanier Bench Road and look for the Regional District Park entrance on the left just before you reach the Okanagan Connector (97C). This section of the walk gives you a view of Trepanier Creek in the valley below.

The stresses and pressures of city life instantly become a distant memory enabling you to totally relax, rejuvenate and unwind like no other place.

Surrounded by sloping hills, colourful orchards, picturesque vineyards and majestic Ponderosa pines, Peachland provides an a-ha! moment as you turn off Highway 97 into the downtown core.

Delve into History and Imagination The Peachland Museum

Take the time to explore some of Peachland’s history. At the south end of Beach Avenue lies one of Peachland’s most unique landmarks, the Peachland Museum. The eight-sided building that once served as the town’s Baptist Church was constructed, mainly by volunteers in 1910 and served as a place of worship until 1964.

Over the years it has functioned as a temporary municipal hall, the parks and recreation office, a fire brigade hall and a public library. Since 1980 the building has housed the Peachland Museum and since 1981, the church building was declared an official British Columbia Heritage site.

Hundreds of historical artifacts, photographs, newspapers and documents are on display. Together, they offer a glimpse into the rich history of Peachland and its people.

The personal histories of pioneer Peachland families are documented in three volumes: Peachland Memories volumes one and two and the 2009 Centennial Picture Book. The books are available for purchase at the museum.

The upper floor of the Museum houses a scale model of the Kettle Valley Railway as it existed between 1955 and 1965, built and maintained by the Central Okanagan Railway Company.

We’ve gone batty!

The Peachland bats, previously considered

a nuisance, have now become a local phenomena. The nocturnal mammals inhabited the 107-year-old Peachland Historic Primary School on Beach Avenue for decades, but were only discovered in 2002 prior to a massive renovation being done to the building.

Rather than remove the bats, the residents of Peachland made the best of a potentially disastrous situation, proving that bats and humans can successfully co-habitate, not to mention the fact that they keep Peachland virtually mosquito-free. The colony lives in the roost from April to October.

In mid-October the bats begin departing the schoolhouse and it is thought that they fly

across Lake Okanagan to hibernate in the rocks of Okanagan Park. In the meantime, the Peachland Visitor Centre has created a unique educational experience. Learn how myths of health risks and other public fears have been put to rest by wildlife biologists, view the daily lifestyle of these nocturnal mammals via video on the “bat cam,” or you may want to take a blanket and sit outside the Peachland Historic Primary School on a starry night to view these little mammals take flight for their nightly foraging.

Along with the massive colony came an accumulation of more than 40 years of bat guano, an increasingly popular home and commercial fertilizer due to its high nitrate content. The Peachland Visitor Centre harvests and sells the guano for this exact purpose.

Parrot Island Sanctuary

Parrot Island is a unique sanctuary for aban-

doned and abused exotic birds. Check them out and share in the owners’ passion for the care and love of these beautiful animals.

Our mythical creatures

Long before fur traders and gold seekers came to the area, there was Ogopogo the lake creature, whose home is supposedly in an underwater cave across the lake, between Rattlesnake Island and Squally Point.

Grab your boat, board, canoe or kayak and see if you can find the home of Canada’s most famous water monster.

Estimated to be anywhere between 20 and 50 meters in length with a slender, undulating, snake-like body, Ogopogo has been reported as having a large, wide-jawed head and multiple fins, which can occasionally be seen just above the surface of the water, circling the island, as if protecting it. Is it real? There’s only one way to find out!
