MEMBERS OF THE Peachland Sportsmen’s Association struggled to pull a net into a place at Shannon Lake Regional Park in West Kelowna on April 26. The net will create a special fishing area, which

staff from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and the Summerland Trout Hatchery will stock with rainbow trout as part of the Regional District of the Central Okanagan’s “Go Fish” program. The youthcentred urban fishery program allows youngsters 15 years of age and under to fish at each location for trout, under the guidance of experts. They are allowed to keep one fish each day, and can participate without a fishing license. This year the program kicks off May 1 at Shannon Lake Regional Park, and will run each weekend through to June 12.

Aulakh told the committee he wants to apply for as many as 20 licenses to operate taxis in West Kelowna and Peachland, with five dedicated just to Peachland.

He guessed, however, that he was more likely to get somewhere around 12 for West Kelowna, and three here in Peachland.

Aulakh said he wants to offer a variety of services, including cheaper and more consistent trips to major destinations

like the airport and ski hills.

Peachland and West Kelowna are not geographically connected to the airport, and transportation is expensive, it’s not always available and the quality is poor he said.

“That’s driving a lot of businesses away from this beautiful tourism place,” he said.

Aulakh, who has been a part-owner in both Richmond and Kelowna taxi companies, said he plans to employ about 40 people with his new venture.

That company will feature a categorized fleet of more and less expensive vehicles, trucks for transport, wheelchair accessible vans, a shuttle, limo and vintage vehicle service.

He said he wants to offer flat rate fees to major destinations like the airport and ski hills, and give special discounts for round trips, seniors, students and agricultural workers.

“Whenever we book our holidays, and when we go there, we look for transportation.

Council Briefs VIEW STAFF Council aims for October burn at former landfill site After what Director of Operations Joe Mitchell called a “productive” meeting with the Ministry of Environment, Peachland will move ahead with its application for a one-time burn at the site of the former waste transfer station.

Earlier this month council postponed a decision on applying for the permit, pending a conversation with Minister of Environment Mary Polak.

At the April 26 Committee of the Whole meeting, Mitchell told council that meeting had taken place, and that staff could now move forward with the application.

“The meeting was productive, and provided framework for district staff to work with Ministry of Environment staff to secure a one-time burn permit for leftover waste,” he said.

Mitchell said the district now has clear criteria set out for how to get that permit. In addition, some of the background that was originally planned for won’t be needed, reducing the cost of the application from an estimated $25,000 to an estimated $5,000.

Coun. Mike Kent lauded the hard work of staff and Mayor Cindy Fortin that led to the meeting, pointing out that because of them the cost of the application “has been reduced to a much more reasonable number.”

Laura’s Lane designated A small back lane will be named in honour of a beloved former Peachland teacher.

The name “Laura’s Lane” will be given to the previously unnamed lane that runs parallel between 4th and 5th Streets, off of Waldo Way. The name is inspired by Laura Lucier, who who taught generations of Peachlanders from 1947 to 1980.

Director of Planning Cory Gain told the Committee of the Whole on April 26 that the concept of naming the laneway directly adjacent to the Little School House on Brandon Ave. “is a great way of supporting placemaking in this neighbourhood.”

“Naming the lane gives it an identity and creates a sense of place which serves to invite more pedestrian traffic, making it more inviting for visitors to explore Peachland’s history and community.”

“I really like the idea of using naming rights as a way to educate and promote the heritage of our town,” said Coun. Mike Kent, before council unanimously approved the proposal.

But Aulakh will have some competition. His presentation came on the heels of a similar one made by Peachland’s Mark Tissing late last year.

Last October, Tissing told council he planned to apply with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to run a taxi company based out of Peachland, noting that there is a “definite need” for a local taxi service in town.

The smell of your breath is the science behind a new device that will determine if you’re too stoned to be behind the wheel. UBC Okanagan engineering professor Mina Hoorfar has developed a handheld device, known as a microfluidic breath analyzer, that can detect the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in a person’s breath.

THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

“It’s very easy to test for THC as it is a big molecule that stays in your breath for a long time,” says Hoorfar, recently named UBC Okanagan’s researcher of the year. “There is a period of 12 hours after you have

consumed THC when it can still be detected in your breath.”

THC also stays in the blood and in saliva. However, roadside testing involving blood analysis or spit tests is not an easy process, and results are not immediate. With Hoorfar’s device – about the size of two fingers together – a law enforcement officer can determine within seconds whether a person is impaired. The device costs about $15 to manufacture and is Bluetooth-enabled so data can be collected using a cellphone.

“This is a tool not just for the police, but perhaps more for self-testing and self-monitoring,” says Hoorfar, noting it can also be used as a personal breathalyzer after

In an interview on April 26 he said he “will have a taxi service in Peachland,” but refused to give any more details, citing concerns about competition.

During his presentation last year, Tissing asked council to write a letter to the MOTI reiterating the need for a taxi service in the district, which council did with seeming enthusiasm.

On April 26, at Aulakh’s request, council once again agreed to write a letter in support of a taxi company in Peachland, but once again stated they couldn’t only support the concept in general, not a specific business.

The microfluidic breath analyzer, made with a 3D printer at the UBC’s campus in Kelowna uses a single gas sensor along with a micrometer deep channel (not even as thick as a strand of hair). The highly-sensitive semiconductor gas sensor is inside the microchannel – and diffused exhaled breath is recorded and analyzed as it flows through this channel.

The “smellprint” of the exhaled breath is then provided by the device showing how much marijuana has been consumed.

Hoorfar says with the decriminalization of

cannabis on the federal government’s radar, and several American states legalizing the substance, it’s only a matter of time before driving while stoned becomes an enforcement matter.

Police in Colorado and Washington states use an oral swab to test saliva, or can order a blood test. But even in those states, there is no legal definition of the amount of THC that can determine if a person is too impaired to drive. Hoorfar and Paknahad say their device can also register odours other than THC, and it is currently being tested for ketones, meaning diabetics may eventually be able to take a breath test instead of a finger prick blood test to monitor their glucose levels.

ou know how people say you can’t really understand how something feels until it happens to you? Well, it happened to me. As of Tuesday night, I can now count myself among the dozens of Peachland residents who have had their vehicle or home broken into.

In my case, it was my car, which was parked in front of our home.

There are three vehicles in our driveway and mine was the only one stolen from; it was also the only one that was unlocked.

The thief (or thieves) took all the change in my car, but more importantly, they took my camera – the Nikon I used to take photos for The View, in fact. This is not only frustrating because we now have to replace it; I loved that old thing. To me it was like another limb, and I am genuinely sad that it’s gone.

I have to admit, though I feel victimized because something in my possession was taken from me, I feel I need to accept some responsibility because I am the fool who left one of my car doors unlocked.

Just the same, an unlocked door may be unwise, but it is most definitely not an invitation.

I suppose it could’ve been worse. My car wasn’t damaged, no one was hurt, to my knowledge – although I hope whomever took that camera stubbed his or her toe while fleeing our driveway, or at least got bitten by a really big bug!

Since last Tuesday, I have taken to Peachland’s Buy and Sell page on Facebook to ask people if they have heard about thefts in the area.

The response has been overwhelming, and frankly a little disturbing.

One woman said her new home had already been broken into a few times. Another said within two weeks of living here her bike was stolen and her car was broken into, and it was locked.

Another woman said her company vehicle was broken into as well as several cars in her neighbourhood. She said her neighbours even found a wallet that had been ransacked and tossed off to the side of the road. And a man wrote that he had tools taken from his shed just last week.

In response to the thefts some people told me they have installed sensor lights and/or alarm systems, which in some cases have proved to be an effective deterrent.

Still, it’s a kind of sick feeling knowing someone would attempt to go through your things while you’re not around. I can’t imagine how people feel when their homes are broken into.

So how does Peachland deal with this ongoing problem? I don’t think the responsibility falls on our Community Policing volunteers, as was suggested to me – they are just that, volunteers. I don’t expect them to patrol the neighbourhoods all night long, unprotected.

A greater RCMP presence would be nice, but on the other hand, I think Oliver is roughly the same size as Peachland and has its own RCMP detachment, so does Osoyoos, and there is still quite a bit of theft in both of those towns. Earlier this year a bunch of the wineries between Oliver and Osoyoos were hit pretty bad. Eventually this resulted in many of the winery owners getting together and investing in private security to protect their properties.

In regard to getting the camera back, someone suggested we put an ad in the paper asking whomever took to return it, no questions asked.

It’s not a bad idea; it might even work. But personally, I would ask questions – in fact, I would insist on it. Why should someone take something that doesn’t belong to them and get away unscathed because I want our camera back?

That only perpetuates the message that there are no consequences for committing a crime. And really, who does that benefit in the long run? If I rob a bank I’m pretty sure the bank manager isn’t going to offer not to press charges against me if I simply return all the money I stole; I don’t see why it should be any different for a punk who goes into someone’s home or car uninvited.

As far as the problem of theft in Peachland as a whole goes, I don’t know what the answer is, but I do encourage people not to take any chances. Lock your doors.

If someone steals from you, report it to the RCMP. And finally, I think we should feel sorry for the people who find themselves pillaging locked or unlocked homes and cars at night. Because as angry as I am, I think it’s really sad that people are so hard up that they resort to stealing in the first place.

I think a person who is that desperate needs more than the money they would get from hocking an old camera or some tools, to fix whatever is wrong in their life. Maybe they’ll figure that out when someone steals from them. Hopefully sooner.

I voiced my concern to town hall and was basically told that this happens every year and what do I expect when living in a mountainous region?

Well, I expect to be able to drink clean water from my tap. I expect to be able to wash clothes and dishes in water that isn’t brown.

I tried boiling water

and it is still disgusting.

How do mothers bathe their babies in this? We need to buy our water to have coffee, brush our teeth, drink, or do dishes – or add bleach to the dishwater. How nice!

In addition, I happen to be on medication for RA, and subsequently I have a weakened im-

mune system and am hoping I don’t get ill from this water. How many other Peachland residents are in this boat? Either the town should reduce our taxes, reimburse us for money spent on clean water, or give priority to a new filtration system.

VIEW STAFF Councillor Keith Thom says he couldn’t be happier about his new position as a director of SILGA (the Southern Interior Local Government Association).

The first-time councillor was elected on April 21 at a convention in Kelowna. Thom will be the first Peachland council member to be elected since 1964 when Reeve C.O. Winton was a director. He was nominated from the floor and was chosen from a slate of 12 contenders.

“I am so looking forward to serving the Southern Interior, both at the local level and province wide at UBCM, giving a voice to the many small communities that speckle our area,” Thom wrote in a message to The View following his win.

The Okanagan Valley Goose Management Program is halfway through its annual egg addling program, according to Kate Hagmeier, Okanagan Valley Goose Management program coordinator.

“Field crews are having great success at finding nests, more than 200 so far,” said Hagmeier said on April 26.

“However, we still rely on the public to help find new or different nest locations.

Input from the public allows thorough reach of the program.”

The program, now in its 10th year, aims to continue to prevent the nesting Canada goose population from growing. Working under permits from Environment Canada, trained crews search public lands between Osoyoos and Vernon where geese have been known to nest or are likely to

“This year, most of the reports have been from the northern areas of the program,” said Hagmeier, who is concerned that they will miss nests in the southern regions of the valley. She says people have learned how to “goose-proof their properties” by covering planters and peaking boat covers, so many of the problems landowners have faced with nesting geese are decreasing.

“But if geese are shifted off these obvious nest locations, we need to find the new sites. They don’t typically go far from their original location, even year after year.”

Hagmeier notes that the geese targeted in this program are not native to the area.

“These geese are descendants of young geese and eggs that were introduced in the 1960s and 70s.

They were brought here from different areas in Canada and the United Sates to encourage the creation of an Okanagan goose population.

Hindsight is 20/20, but biologists today would never take a species and introduce it outside of its native range. We understand the perils of introducing non-natives into environments to which they do not belong,” she added.

The egg addling program involves shaking eggs or coating them with non-toxic biodegradable food-grade corn oil within 14 days of incubation to make them non-viable.

Once addled, eggs are returned to the nest. Geese continue to incubate until they realize the eggs will not hatch.

At this point, it is generally too late in the year to produce more eggs. Hagmei-

er says adults are not harmed and will continue with their regular life cycle.

The Okanagan Valley Goose Management Program is a partnership between the City of Kelowna, Central Okanagan Regional District, Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen, City of West Kelowna, City of Vernon, City of Penticton, District of Lake Country, Town of Osoyoos, Town of Oliver, District of Peachland, District of Summerland, Westbank First Nation, Glenmore Ellison Irrigation District and Western Canada Turfgrass Association.

Do you need to clean out your garage or basement? How about old toys you need to get rid of? Longtime Peachland resident Marion Hall says her upcoming community garage sale might be the best way to recycle those items.

The sale, which Hall first introduced to Peachland last year, will be held on May 28, and anyone interested in participating is encouraged to pre-register with Hall to get their home’s location,

presumably where most people will hold their individual sales, listed on a map that bargain hunters can pick up at a kiosk at Peachland Centre Mall on the day of the sale.

Hall feels the advantage to participating in a community-wide sale like hers is that it benefits the whole town.

Hall said the event was inspired by an annual community garage sale that she has previously attended in Naramata.

The Naramata event, however, is hosted by the district’s recreation department. In an interview on May 5, 2015, Hall said she also thought the

event could benefit the town.

“Everyone there seems to join in,” Hall told The View last May. “The school has special events for children and sells children’s clothing. There is a hot dog and coffee lunch option at the community centre. The library has its book sale. The churches and community groups get involved as well. It has become a great day for the community and it’s a great benefit to the businesses there.”

Hall told The View she would love to see that kind of involvement in Peachland, but that it will take some time for

the event to grow to that size. There is no charge to participate and Hall is hoping to get as many participants as possible. This year’s sale also includes child-minding, provided by the Peachland Boys and Girls Club.

The sale is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 28.

In total, Berry added, she and her crew donated eight sets of proper gear, six of which included boots. To put that in perspective, she noted, each set of gear is worth approximately

Most people wouldn’t consider ten consecutive days of physical and mental training in temperatures so intensely hot one virtually sweats buckets.

But Amy Berry isn’t most people.

For Berry, who is arguably one of Peachland Fire and Rescue Service’s most enthusiastic volunteers, those kind of conditions aren’t a deterrent – they’re basically an invitation.

Berry recently returned from a trip to Colombia where she, along with four other B.C. firefighters, spent two weeks (March 11 to March 20) volunteering their time training and acquainting themselves with local fire departments on behalf of the Fire Rescue International Training Association (FRITA).

In an interview with The View prior to her departure, the petite, blonde firefighter could barely contain her excitement at the prospect of a schedule comprised entirely of doing what she loves almost as much as she loves her young daughter.

“Every day we trained,” she told the audience at a presentation held at the Peachland fire hall on April 13, adding that she was grateful to her trip’s sponsors, Peachland Fire and Rescue Service, TNI and the Peachland Lions Club.

“We trained and when we were finished training we

“What I also found really interesting is that, when they go out on calls, everyone is taking photos of the scene. The first responders have

When asked if she really does intend to return to Colombia or go on another FRITA deployment, Berry remains evasive.

As for the conditions, Berry said, dressed in full gear – which includes a helmet, boots, coat, etc., in temperatures reaching over 29°C (84.2°F) – she never sweated so much in her life.

“When I took my gear off at the end of the day, I was drenched. The sweat just poured off,” she laughed.

She said she struggled more with the language barrier than the weather, but after a few days they “figured it out.”

Other challenges Berry said she and her crew faced were the lack of resources available to the fire departments they worked with in San Gil and Malambo.

“They had these beautiful trucks, but-

“We still text every day,” she told the crowd, holding up her cellphone to show a text she had received from one of her compatriots just that morning.

A few days before Christmas, soldiers attacked the town of Bongki in South Sudan. Terrified, Nyabel, who, at the time, was not yet 12 years old, led her family through the bush. Surrounded by darkness, perforated by the sounds of bombs and gunfire as the village they fled burned to the ground behind them, the family headed for Yida.

Traveling without shoes, Nyabel, whose feet were cut and badly swollen, continued to lead her family through the thick bush. By the time they reached the end of their three-day journey they were exhausted and overwhelmed.

Eight months later, the family still struggles with hunger – the children go to the bush daily to gather whatever edible plants and vegetables they can find,

but still live mainly on one meal a day: a simple paste of mill flour and water Nyabel and her family refer to as “paper food.”

Christine Parsons, Regional Development Manager for CARE Canada, says Nyabel’s story is one of many she could tell.

That’s just one of the reasons Parsons says the not-for-profit hosts the annual Walk In Her Shoes Challenge, which took place in the Okanagan for the first time on April 23.

Founded in 1945, CARE began delivering disaster relief and humanitarian aid, much of it in the globally recognized form of CARE Packages.

Last year, CARE worked in 95 countries, reaching more than 65 million people, based on need. Today, the organization focuses on food and nutrition, humanitarian relief, and maternal and child health, all with a special emphasis on women and girls.

“Women and girls in developing countries walk an

average of 10,000 steps every day – the equivalent of walking from Rock Creek Highway to the airport – leaving little time for getting an education or earning an income,” Parsons explained in an email on April 25.

That, she added, is the inspiration for the Walk in Her Shoes Challenge, which is held annually in communities across Canada and around the world.

Saturday’s event took place in Kelowna and saw dozens seek to cover the average distance women and girls in developing countries travel to fetch basic essentials like water and food.

“I truly believe in the power of women and girls to make the world a better place for all and so I am honoured to help bring this initiative to the Okanagan,” said Wendy Wright, a Kelowna resident, child advocate and volunteer organizer of Saturday’s event.

“When you empower women and girls, you can help families and entire communities escape poverty and overcome adversity.”

Participants will be familiarized with the Canada Food Guide, kitchen safety and sanitation and the proper way to set a table.

This is an incredible opportunity where our community is working together to benefit both the young and the older residents of Peachland. Our mandate at the Wellness Centre has perhaps been perceived as services

only for the senior population but our vision statement is to serve all ages: “People of all ages in Peachland enhance their well-being, embrace opportunities, and enjoy life in the community.”

Golfers tee off in support of Peachland Lions Club

DESPITE CHILLY TEMPERATURES the sun was shining on April 24 as 80 golfers descended on the Summerland Golf and Country Club on for the Peachland Lions Club’s 18th annual charity golf tournament. Though the club had not yet completed their calculations to determine how much was raised by press time, club president Eldon Kerbes says this year appeared to be one of the most successful yet. Proceeds from the tournament, which is sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Gorman Lumber, will support Camp Winfield and Peachland youth.

Showing off the club’s new tent, which will be used throughout the summer as the club lends their barbequing skills to various community events are, from left: club president Eldon Kerbes, Joe Driussi, Dan Rouleau, Steve Spalleck, Oliver Mendonca and Dave Stuart.
