Boys and Girls Clubs to offer preschool and afterschool programs By Joanne Layh Beginning this fall, Peachland parents will be able to take advantage of preschool and afterschool programs at Peachland Elementary School, thanks to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs have been operating a mobile youth program in Peachland since 2009, however this is the first time that they will be providing ser-
vices for young children in Peachland. The preschool program is being offered through a partnership with School District 23, while the afterschool program is in partnership with the District of Peachland. “We are very excited to be able to expand our services in the community of Peachland, which will help us fulfill our mandate to help young people grow healthy, happy and safely from birth to adult-
hood,” Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs marketing coordinator Erin Turvey said. Up until June 2010, both preschool and afterschool programs were operated by the District of Peachland. The new programming offered by the Boys and Girls Clubs will replace that which was previously offered by the district. The afterschool programs are open to children from Kindergarten
to Grade 6. Beginning on Tuesday, September 7, afterschool programming will be available on weekdays from 2:30 to 6 p.m. and will include sports, leisure, creative arts, personal growth and life skill activities. Programs are also available on professional days and during school breaks. The fees are $13.50 per day for 2:30 to 6 p.m. programming or $31.15 per day for the full-day program. The preschool program
is available for three and four-year-olds. Preschool will begin on Monday, September 13 and will be offered between 8:30 and 11 a.m. Classes for three-yearolds will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays for $110 per month, while four-year-olds can attend on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for $160 per month. “Our preschools encourage children to explore, learn, and grow in
a stimulating and fun environment. Preschoolers develop and practice social and language skills, cooperative play, independent thinking and an awareness of self,” Turvey says. Subsidies for both programs are available and there are still spaces available for all programs, Turvey says.
