The value of three one ounce bars of gold and some cash that was recovered by police and given to the district will be used to help fund the replacement of the local community policing vehicle, Peachland council has decided. In April of 2018 the District of Peachland received police recovered
goods including total funds in the amount of $5,465 comprised of three one ounce gold bars and a small amount of cash. The recovered items have been held by the district for three months and public notice was made in accordance with the community charter, satisfying the municipality’s policy as well as legislative requirements of unclaimed property. The booty remains unclaimed. Continued on Page 3

In Memory of
CHRISTIANSON, Raymond Allen
Raymond Allen Christianson was born on January 28, 1953 and was sadly taken from us far too soon on Friday, July 19, 2019 at the age of 66 years. Ray was predeceased by his beloved wife Dianna on August 30, 2016. Ray is survived by his loving son Joshua (Taylor), brother Ron (Dianne) Christianson, sisters Judy Christianson and Sandy (Doug) Cherry, grandchildren Autumn, Easton and Sawyer, nephews Neil (Renae), Steven (Dena), Shawn (Tanya), Kyle (Chloe), niece Nicole, brothers-in-law Pat (Joy), Stephen (Teresa) and Michael Thomas, along with numerous extended family members. Ray is also predeceased by his father Arthur and mother Jane ‘Bunty’ Christianson. Ray was born in Prince George, BC where he spent his youth enjoying all that life had to offer. At the age of 16, he met the love of his life, Dianna. After a long courtship they married in 1982 and their son Joshua James was born the following year. Together they built a wonderful life for their family, with Ray dedicating his career to the construction industry where he proudly built single-family homes and multi-family communities throughout BC, Northern Alberta and the NWT. In 2005, the family moved to the Okanagan Valley, settling in Peachland where they have remained. Ray will always be remembered for his amazing love of life and his positive attitude. A day wouldn’t go by that you wouldn’t hear him say, ‘I’ve just been thinking…’ and a new idea would blossom from this amazing man’s mind, and inevitably a new adventure would begin. Whether heading down the highway on a casual drive or finding an unknown backroad, Ray had a passion for discovering all things new. That, and good food! Driven by his strong sense of ethics, loyalty, devotion and an immense love of his family, Ray was always at their side throughout his life. He was a loving husband who cherished his wife Dianna and an amazing father who was devoted to his son and best friend Joshua. He was a proud, wonderful and kind grandfather whose face lit up every time he looked at one of his beautiful grandchildren. Ray was a caring and loving sibling who was always there for his brother Ron and sisters Judy and Sandy and an incredible uncle to his niece and nephews. Family was everything to Ray. And for those that were fortunate enough to have called this wonderful man their friend, they were truly blessed; he was loved by all who knew him. Ray’s incredible spirit and love for life will live on forever in those of us who were lucky enough to have had him in our world. He will be missed more than there are words to describe. We love you Ray; you were and always will be ‘awesome’. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in support of Prostate Cancer Research. A Celebration of Life for Ray will be held in Peachland, BC at a later date.

Vehicle collides into pickup truck, triggering three-vehicle crash and car fire JOANNE LAYH The driver of a black Audi that collided into two parked vehicles in the downtown area Monday night has been charged under the BC Motor Vehicle Act. The accident happened on Beach Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets. “On Monday night we responded to the call of a motor vehicle accident on Beach Avenue involving a vehicle that was on fire. It was a practice night for us, so attendance was really good. We were actually just finishing up our Monday night practice. The call came in just before 10 p.m. and our practice ends at 10 p.m. so it was a very fast response with a lot of manpower resources because our entire department was actually here for practice,” Peachland fire chief Dennis Craig told The View. “Our crews very quickly knocked the fire down, confirmed nobody was trapped and then maintained

the scene until RCMP arrived.” It is thought the fire may have been caused by a fuel spill during the crash where hot oil may have spilled onto a hot manifold resulting in an ignition. At 9:43 p.m. RCMP received a request to assist the Peachland Fire Department, who were responding to the three-vehicle collision. RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said fire crews were already on scene, extinguishing a small fire in a black Audi involved in the chain reaction crash. “Police believe that the black Audi A4 collided with the rear of a parked Ford F150 Raptor pickup truck. The force of the collision caused the unoccupied Raptor to further collide with a parked Ford F350 pickup truck,” Cpl. O’Donaghey said. The driver of the black Audi sustained relatively minor injuries as a result of the crash and was medically assessed at the scene by BC Emergency Health Services. Any witnesses who did not speak with police at the scene are asked to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.

Bars of gold went unclaimed for over a year Continued from Page 1 According to policy, unclaimed property valued at $5,000 or more is to be disposed of as directed by council. During the 2019 budget deliberations, council identified the community policing vehicle replacement as a priority and directed staff to place $5,000 per yewar into the fire department equipment reserve until sufficient funding is available to replace the vehicle. “I think it is a good allocation of the funds,” Councillor Kent said. Coun. Kent also enquired about the possibility of the municipality selecting an electric vehicle. “When we did the budget request earlier this year we did look at electric hybrids for that vehicle. The technology in larger vehicles is coming along but the costs are still quite high,” fire chief Dennis Craig told council. Craig went on to say that community policing do require a larger vehicle to carry electric speed watch signs and that they are monitoring
the technology and its efficiencies. “We don’t want to get just a hybrid vehicle. We want something similar to what public works bought - an electric hybrid that’s a full electric and only goes to gas when it’s required,” Craig said. “Just to support the approach our fire chief is taking, I think while electric vehicles show a great deal of potential, the topography and climate here and the battery technology are not yet well enough aligned to be able to provide the kind of robust service levels that are required of these vehicles,” Councillor Terry Condon said. These recovered funds, in addition to $5,000 from the 2019 budget put the amount reserved for a vehicle replacement to just over $10,000. The budget request for the vehicle was $32,000. The only other recovery of funds occurred back in 2016 when $4,294 of recovered funds was donated to the Peachland Wellness Centre toward s their outreach program.

Outdoor burning regulations need to be stricter LYONEL DOHERTY Blood, sweat and tears. That’s what BC Wildfire crews literally have to shed every time they battle the beast. None of us can imagine what these men and women endure for days on end in suffocating heat. They build guards, put out hot spots, set up bladders, operate pumps, drag hoses and sleep when they can in hot tents. Oh, and eat when they can. Some get injured on the fire ground while others have to contend with hornets, ants, rattlesnakes and singed eyebrows. Why in the hell do they do it? Because it’s in their blood, and quite frankly, they don’t like losing to fire. Plus, their passion is protecting lives and property, and they are willing to risk their own safety to do it. But understand that the risks they take are calculated and informed. As with any wildfire suppression manoeuvres, there are people who question the tactics used by forestry crews. Case in point: One online reader said there is no need to backburn a mountain. “Think about it, two days ago it was 280 hectares, one backburn brought it to 900 hectares. Last night’s backburn brought it to 1500 hectares . . . all burned by the BCFS. Why?” Another person expressed his views on the “ineffective” firefighting efforts in the Eagle Bluff fire. Of course, many others dispute these claims, saying the BC Wildfire Service saved our bacon and prevented property losses in the Gallagher Lake and McKinney Creek area.
BC Wildfire says the hand-ignition burn they conducted south of Gallagher Lake last week was very successful. This was deemed necessary to reduce the amount of fuel between the fire ground and the community. One day, the flames and smoke on the edge of Senkulmen Business Park were quite unsettling. The next day there was nary a column of smoke to be seen in that area. Was that not a success? The same backburn method was used in the McKinney Creek area, and residents were warned that these burns would significantly increase the size of the fire. Whether you agree with these methods or not, the bottom line is no lives or structures were lost. No injuries, either. Isn’t that the end goal? What still sticks in the craw is the cause of this fire. Was it lightning or human caused? Was it an exploding transformer? If it was human caused, we may never know the perpetrator. What we do know is that outdoor burning and campfire regulations need to be stricter. Considering the high fire hazard in this region, it’s hard to believe that small campfires are still permitted. The province should ban all size campfires starting June 1 every summer. This ban should remain in effect until September or October depending on the hazard. Heavy fines should also be assessed. Perhaps then people will take their romp through the woods seriously.

Old Victoria Road on-ramp “bump” remains a traffic hazard To the mayor and council, director of operations Joe Mitchell and the District of Peachland, This letter is a request to remove the on-ramp to the of Victoria Road off Somerset Avenue, south of Gladstone Road. The old Victoria Road was decommissioned over 25
years ago, but the on-ramp “bump” remains and is a traffic hazard. Many drivers go around the “bump,” which places them against oncoming traffic. It is understood that all of Somerset Avenue was to be upgraded when the Ponderosa Golf Course was op-
erational, but since that has not happened this request is being made for the safety of all travelling on this portion of Somerset Avenue. Sincerely yours, MR Henderson, Peachland
Resident questions ministry of transportation transparency Dear editor, Regarding Mayor Fortin’s response to my letter, if, as she says, council have been vocal in their opposition to the “through Peachland” lower elevation routes, I haven’t heard it. Nevertheless, I am relieved that the mayor is now coming forward with a stance and encouraging the community to join her in the fight to save our town. On another note, I received a communication from
MOTI official, Mr. Sirett. He advised that there was consultation with a number of participants, which included local council. Also, he did not agree to a public Q&A forum as government prefers the “open house” concept, a more informal anonymous off the record forum. MOTI is undertaking a process, that on the surface appears transparent and legitimate, however, they have an agenda, and the welfare and the future of Peach-
Lakeshore Gardens resident calls for change I’ve lived at Lakeshore Gardens for about five years. I daily walk my pet from Todd Road to 13th Street (Bliss Bakery) at least twice a day. My choice - and I believe the choice of most other walkers from out 103 suites as well as campers staying at Todd’s RV - is that we prefer to walk on the water edge side of this danger zone, which I fear one day will be the scene of a tragic possible death if changes in the lanes aren’t made soon. On the safe side of the street is a four-foot wide narrow sidewalk that few walkers use. Next to that is a 24-foot wide parking lane that is almost completely empty of parked vehicles for at least 9 months of the year – fall, winter and spring. From July through September,
our walker’s preferred pathway is cover with cars, small trucks, large trucks with trailers, RV campers and the largest mobile homes with slide cuts often protruding into the north bound traffic lane. Now consider a group of walkers, many with dogs on a leash darting in and out of the northbound lane in order to get around vehicles on this stretch that are now parked in the pathway all the way from the regular eight-foot protected sidewalk from downtown that ends at 13th Street and leads onto the path of roadway asphalt and a little painted line all the way to where it connects with the elevated sidewalk across the bridge at Todd Road. I understand a plebiscite or questionnaire went out to the residents along Beach Avenue a
few years ago requesting opinions. I gather the replies were unanimous and reflected not wanting to lose their lake views, which is an obvious but weak response. If there was no parking on the lake side of Beach Avenue, and the vehicles had to park in the wide parking lane that has already been provided by the municipality, it would make little difference to the 24 or so ground level residences. Now if you really want to walk in even more danger, I suggest trying to walk on a 12-inch pathway from Todd Road north to connect with Buchanan Road. Plus, there are no street lights either, so don’t dare to stay out late. Robert Moller, Peachland

land is not their top priority. This is all about the fastest cheapest way to get commuters and goods north and south. It seems unfathomable that 20 years ago a controversial highway would be built through the town, and 20 years later they may want to abandon that route and bulldoze through another part of it. did live with a dog, and they got along great! Luna would love to go into a quiet home as she is a bit shy and likes to be pet on her own terms. Luna does not like the company of cats. Luna is a very sweet girl who bonds closely with her person. She doesn’t like too much change in her environment, so a home with a predictable routine would be best for this girl.

When my vet, Dr. Moshe Oz at Rose Valley Veterinary Clinic told me there was a chance for Calvin to tear his crainial cruciate ligament (CCL) in the right leg due to compensation after his first surgery on the left leg. I didn’t think it would happen that fast. Yes, you heard it. Calvin had his other leg operated on just two months after his first surgery. It’s a

house, Peachland Ambassadors, Peachland Visitor Information Centre and Peachland Art Gallery. “Due to the huge success of the Christmas Community Market Day last year, we are holding the event once again on November 30, 2019. Our plan is to create a ‘Candy Cane Lane’ for visitors to travel to and from each market event up and down Waldo Way between 4th Street and 6th Street,” Livingstone wrote. “This sounds really kind of neat,” Mayor Cindy Fortin said. The event will take place on November 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Peachland council voted this week to waive the road closure fee so a non-profit group can host a holiday event in Waldo Way. Peachland Community Arts Council president Deborah Livingstone wrote to Peachland council requesting a $100 fee waiver on behalf of non-profit members of the Christmas Community Market Committee, which includes the Peachland Wellness Centre, St. Margaret’s Church, Peachland United Church, Peachland Little School-

Peachland Art Gallery to include travelling exhibition and featured artists JANET HORNSETH
PEACHLAND ART GALLERY The impressive Peachland Art Gallery is centrally located in the beautifully restored Peachland Historic School positioned right on the waterfront in the heart of downtown Peachland within walking distance to local restaurants and shopping. New exhibitions showcasing both local and distant artists are featured on a monthly basis. The gallery is primarily volunteer staffed and prides itself on offering diverse exhibitions that engage, challenge and inform its audience. With an annual visitor count of over 11,000 visitors, it has become one of the go-to galleries in the Okanagan. August is an exciting month for the gallery. We are currently hosting a travelling exhibition called “Art in the Park”. For the last ten years, Parks Canada and the Revelstoke Visual Arts Society (RVAS) have partnered to host the Art in the Park program. By developing new and innovative programs that encourage Canadians to visit their national parks and historic places in person or through art, and by providing innovative perspectives on these places, Parks Canada allows more Canadians to experience the outdoors and learn about our environment and history. A group of 10 Canadian artists working in a variety of styles and mediums spend four days in the historic Rogers Pass area of Glacier National Park in early August 2018. Based in the Alpine Club of Canada’s rustic A.O. Wheeler Hut, the artists explored the stunning landscapes and rich history of the area, photographing, sketching and, depending on their medium, producing final works of art. The exhibition travels throughout western Canada in 2019 and our gallery was fortunate to host it for the entire month of August. Be sure to stop by and read the artist diaries displayed. As well as visual art, there are a number of fabulous pottery pieces inspired by the park. This exhibition is in conjunction with Artists in Studio which features five new artists weekly working in the gallery for the entire month of August. The five featured artists this week are: Daniel A. Dearborn is a prolific painter who would call his style impressionistic, inspired by Monet and Van Gogh. Dearborn began painting at a very young age. He studied with his mentor in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. This inspirational man was a master artist and provided

the base for what Dearborn knows today. Dearborn prefers painting with bright colours because it makes his soul happy loving all the brilliance that Mother Nature provides for us in all the four seasons, with summer and fall being stand outs. Millicent Winston is an acrylic painter who hails from West Kelowna. She started painting six years ago and enjoys invoking emotional reactions from viewers. She is displaying a number of pieces of various subjects including nature, wildlife and historical buildings. She is a member of the Peachland Art Group and the Heritage Group. Audrey Peat’s interest in colour and form was first expressed through the medium of stained glass and mosaics. As a painter, she is experimenting with a variety of styles and mediums in her development. She paints twice weekly with different groups and especially enjoys interpreting the natural beauty of the Okanagan. Susan Collinge is an acrylic artist who lives in Westbank. She is a member of the Peachland Art Group and Okanagan Artists Coalition. Her favourite subjects are landscapes, old buildings, flowers and trees as well as the cactus and Arizona sunsets. She exhibits her paintings at local art events. Lorraine Urquhart is an acrylic painter and a member of various Okanagan art groups and her work is displayed in collections across Canada. She works with acrylics on canvas doing landscapes, impressionism and abstracts. Her intuitive paintings have given her an exciting way to express herself.

Your centennial fall fair entry could be growing in your backyard JENNY COOPER
PEACHLAND FALL FAIR There are 34 categories (30 fruit and four nut) in the Peachland Fall Fair’s fruit and nut section, all of which could be growing in your own backyard. We are so lucky to be living in this area where so much fruit is grown, including apples, peaches, pears, plums and various types of berries. Wouldn’t you love to compete against your neighbour or best friend to see who has the best apples? Now is the time to start thinking of entering your fruits and nuts in the Peachland Fall Fair, so get your plates ready to display your entries. Display your entries on white paper plates or styrofoam plates. Your fruit and nut entries must show natural colour and size. Be careful with plums; do not mar or polish off the blue “bloom”. Look for the 100th Annual Peachland Fall Fair handbook at various locations locally, which will give you the general rules and regulations together with suggestions for exhibitors. We highly recommend buying your entry tags on our advance selling dates at the Peachland Community Centre main hall on Tuesday, September 3 and Friday, September 6 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. The 100th Annual Peachland Fair is
just around the corner and the theme this year is Pride in our Past - Faith in Our Future. Now in existence for 100 years, the Peachland Fall Fair continues to strive to expand its annual event in the community. It is our mission to encourage an awareness of agriculture by holding an annual agriculture fair. In order to meet our mission and provide services in our community, we rely on the generosity of individuals and businesses for support. Without the assistance of these community minded individuals and businesses, we wouldn’t be able to serve those in our community each year. Are you interested in sharing and expanding your knowledge, meeting new people, strengthening your leadership skills, and implementing new ideas within our community? If so, the Peachland Fall Fair has incredible volunteer opportunities for you. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization and without their support and dedication, this annual event would not be possible. The 100th annual Peachland Fall Fair will take place September 7 - 8. Admission is $3 for adults and .50 cents for children age 12 and under. To learn how you can support this event contact info@peachlandfallfair.ca. If you have any questions contact Steve Hamilton at 250-767-0234 or Jenny Cooper at 705-728-1867.
