Buy local goods and services: support your town, your neighbour and yourself I feel passionately that our small businesses are vital to the success of our community. While it’s not always possible to buy local goods and services to meet your needs as a consumer, there are many very good reasons to buy local when you can. Here are some great reasons for buying local: • Our locally-owned businesses give character to our community. We have unique businesses that reflect the quality and individual creativeness of their owners and employees, providing a shopping and dining experience not found anywhere else but Peachland! You will notice that the uniqueness of our storefront merchants brings many visitors to Peachland to shop and dine. • Buying goods and services from local merchants fosters community, we are really buying from our neighbours and supporting their endeavours. We are creating social capital – as defined as a community and network of local people that build mutual goodwill through the exchange of services and ideas in our town. That’s one of the reasons why most of us love living in small town Peachland, our sense of community! Do you know the owner of Home Depot? No, but many of you well know Tim Stubbert, the owner of our local Ace Hardware, and you are better off for it! And so it goes with all local business owners you know on a first name basis. This idea leads to my next point: • Locally owned businesses support local non-profit service groups fundraising efforts way more than non-local businesses. How much support comes from big box stores outside our town compared to local businesses who care about our community? Answer: not much! Ask anyone you know in a local service group where they get a good deal of support from – our business community! • Locally-owned businesses are more likely to keep the money they earn in the community and spend some of that on other local goods and services, enhancing the local economic base, creating more investment. • Jobs right here in Peachland, created by local businesses, which overall are the

largest employer in our community, providing the most jobs to local residents, who are your neighbours. • Enjoy better products and services that are customized to suit local tastes and needs provided by local business owner with a better understanding of their marketplace who have the time to get to know their customers. For example, I really appreciate how our local IGA offers fresh local produce harvested at peak time versus shopping at a large grocery store offering produce picked well before it’s ready to be eaten. Having a thriving local business community is not something to be taken for granted. As Peachland residents, time and time again we have seen businesses come and go that have found it difficult to remain profitable, and so have shut down or moved on. Think Peachland Fitness and Valley First Credit Union most recently, both of those business are missed by many local residents. So when you are in need of a product or service, please take a moment to enquire if that product or service is available right here in Peachland. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out it is! I often hear from residents how it is difficult to hire a certain kind of local tradesperson or professional or how far you have to go to shop for what you need. If as a resident you strongly feel there is a need for a product or service currently not available please let me know. We put the word out through other chambers of commerce through their members about what opportunities we think we can offer. Your Peachland Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business in our town. We will continue to work to promote the well-being of our local members, and attract new businesses by identifying the needs of our residents and matching that with potential new business owners. The advertisers in this publication deserve your consideration for being a patron of their business. Please consider doing business with them the next time you are in need of their products and services. What better way to truly be a local Peachlander! 3M URBAN WINDOW FILMS 250.869.0123 • www.urbanwindowfilms.ca
Like sunglasses for your home 3M Urban Window Films provide an elegant yet practical means for solving many of the most challenging aspects of managing sun control and security issues surrounding the use of your home or business. Ash Burnell and Graham and Kelly Todd of 3M Urban Window Films can recommend the best window film application for your needs. Using 3M’s top-of-the-line window films, Urban Window Films allows their clients to maintain unobstructed Okanagan views while providing protection from the heat, glare and ultraviolet damage to furniture. “It’s like sunglasses for your home,” Kelly explained. “We want people to open their blinds and enjoy their incredible Okanagan views. “ “Our window films are designed to reject solar heat, reduce fading, and they can add a valuable layer to your home.” The Todds, who have been popular business owners in Peachland for more than 58 years, launched their latest venture in 2013 with Ash Burnell, owner of Sun Valley Window Cleaners, and have kept busy ever since, growing a healthy client base of business and homeowners throughout southern British Columbia. Graham, who was born and raised in Peachland, says he and his wife, along with their business partner Ash Burnell, were inspired to start Urban Windows after being impressed by 3M’s products and technology. Graham said the team felt this is a quality product to promote in the Okanagan. “It’s a really amazing product,” said Graham. “People around here have beautiful homes with this incredible view. It’s a shame to have to lose your view by covering
it with blinds or curtains.” “When you invite the sun into your home, you shouldn’t have to live with uncomfortable heat, glare on computer screens, fading fabrics, wood and artwork,” added Kelly. By reducing up to 99.9 per cent of the sun’s UV rays, Urban Window Films clients don’t have to keep pulling their shades and drapes to keep your home comfortable. The protective film also allows for energy savings by reducing cooling costs by up to 30 per cent. 3M Window Films can reject up to 79 per cent of the solar heat that may otherwise come through your window and can also reduce winter heat loss by reflecting up to 30 per cent of indoor heat back into the room. Unfortunately, Kelly noted, there are more destructive elements other than the sun: violent weather and crime. “Security window films help hold your glass together when struck, to help prevent flying glass and dangerous shards,” she pointed out. That film is available in clear or with a tinted sun control, she added. Though safety and quality are, and always have been, their number one priority, Graham says for himself, Kelly, and Ash, the foundation of their business comes back to giving their customers what they consider to be the most important thing: comfort and peace of mind. “We work well as a team,” Kelly noted. “At the end of the day, we feel this is a service that can really help people. Improve the comfort in your home, reduce energy costs and increase your home’s value. When your home or business is protected there’s peace of mind. That’s what we get from this!”

TRACEY BOORMAN, REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL 250.768.3339 • #103, 2205 Louie Drive, West Kelowna • www.traceyboorman.com
Tracey offers a seamless and positive experience “The best part of my job is meeting new people and helping them through the stressful experience of moving,” says real estate agent Tracey Boorman. “My goal is to make the whole process a seamless and positive experience.” “I love seeing the buyers walk into a house and feel like this is the house for them. Seeing that joy on their faces, and helping them find their perfect home, is a big part of why I do what I do.” Included in what Boorman does is staging and photography to help prospective buyers visualize themselves in a seller’s home. “Your home is your haven, and when we’re talking with sellers we’re not selling a home, we’re selling a house,” Boorman says. “One of the services I offer is access to a professional stager: someone who will help depersonalize the house so that other people can picture themselves living there. Believe it or not, when you’re selling a home, it makes a huge difference.” Realtors also act as the unbiased voice of reason, Boorman says. The realtor is the objective set of eyes in the transaction. They help sellers see outside their personal connection to a property, and they help buyers stay level when faced with a multiple-bid situation. Realtors help by knowing the best contractors and can refer them easily to new homeowners and potential sellers. They are the link between all things real estate and the novice. “Working with a real estate agent not only allows the opportunity for a larger exposure to advertising, but realtors can also help deal with all the little things that come up when you’re buying or selling a home,” Boorman says. “We’re sort of a onestop-shop that way.” TRACEY BOORMAN PERSONAL REAL ESTATE CORPORATION “Consulting is a huge part of

When we had questions she had the answers we needed quickly, and always with a smile. Nothing ever seemed to be too much trouble, she was always ready and willing to show us anything we wanted to see and to help and accommodate us in every way. It was very nice to be kept in the loop when we were waiting for things to happen. We were never left wondering or waiting, Tracey always kept us informed of the situation. We can’t thank Tracey enough. We love our new home and look forward to spending many happy years there.” - John & Diane, buyers & sellers “Buying a home can be a scary process, particularly in a community and Province one is not familiar with. Tracey made our move from Ontario to B.C. a comfortable, reassuring one. She was extremely knowledgeable, read our “needs” very quickly. We really appreciated and respected her skills and qualities. We would recommend Tracey, without reservation, to any potential real estate clients. She is truly one of the best!” - Pat & Donna, buyers

“We stayed at a Day's dream B&B in the garden suite. Patrick is doing the Winelicious tours as well. I decided to go on the wine tour as I don't know the region or the wines in the Okanagan. I don't think it is possible to visit all the good wineries without a guide. Patrick is very knowledgeable and we visited a number of excellent wine farms. He introduced us to a well renowned winemaker, Cellar Master and Viticulturist with an absolute amazing passion for what he does, what a privilege to meet someone like that. I will strongly recommend this tour to anyone.”
DUNAMIS PROJECTS 250.681.3732 • www.dunamisprojects.com
It’s the feeling of having created something worthwhile Dunamis Projects considers the environment in all aspects of new home construction, additions and renovations. “We also specialize in ICF homes,” says Trevor Neyedli, owner and operator of Dunamis. “These are new energy-efficient dwellings. I like to emphasize energy-efficient construction as much as possible.” “I am constantly encouraging the tradespeople which I include with Dunamis, to make a difference by reducing waste as most of it is unnecessary.” Dunamis has been operating in Peachland since 2008, beginning with bathroom renovations; the business quickly grew. “Five years ago,” Neyedli recalls. “We offered a ‘special’ on Bathroom Renovations. This generated an influx of business.” Being a home-builder and renovator doesn’t bear much resemblance to ‘reality television’, Neyedli considers those to be unrealistic. What sets Dunamis apart from its competitors? “A wide experience in the field,” answers Neyedli. He continues, “I started in construction with home inspections ten years before I became involved with my own construction business, so I’m always looking for a possible ‘domino effect’ of how the reno might affect other parts of the house.” “I endeavour to stay available 24/7 and to maintain an honest approach to the way that I do business, I avoid hiding things in costs and I submit very detailed billing because I purpose the estimates to be as close as possible to the actual invoices of work to be carried out. When, however—not if, but when—problems arise, I submit the steps that need to be done.” “Much time is spent in building a rapport with the client. My home inspection background helps because I have learned how to give balanced advice and usually with options. Sometimes we have to take certain steps, but I always mention in my estimates and also in my time with clients that if I ever do find a problem, I’ll communicate with them right away and take pictures and send them.” “I maintain a good relationship with the sub-trades who we endeavour to include in our team.” Another thing that sets Neyedli apart is his openness to new technology, both in the construction field and online presentations. “ICF homes with insulated foundations as mentioned above is one such area”. “Many of my clients have been from out-of-town, from Vancouver, Calgary and Alberta in general, occasionally from further afield; they either have rental homes here in BC, just retiring here or relocating. Because of our website www.dunamisprojects.com our clients come from all over.” “Following the establishing of Dunamis, we are now receiving new business from referrals, but building my business has mainly been through online interaction. I like having the latest
8
technology and input and I believe that to be part of the success of my business.” “In the construction field, it’s definitely the energy efficiency focus that is attractive,” Neyedli continues. “I like the challenge of change. If I’ve done something the same way for five years and a better way of doing it presents itself, then I will aim to learn the details, because I want the most efficient timelines and the best end product for each client.” Starting Dunamis Projects wasn’t Neyedli’s initial plan, he admits. “I had become experienced concurrently in both renovation and inspection. My father was a builder while I was in my earlier years, so I always had my hand in construction. I kept my part-time job in renovating and carpentry while working with my father…later in his Home Inspections business.” “My ambition was to move to the Okanagan to start a home inspection company, but because the market declined at that time, it wasn’t the best plan to be starting that type of business. So I sought to get back into something that’s more rewarding and got back into construction and with some good contracts Dunamis was launched.” “At the end of the day, it’s the feeling of having created something worthwhile that keeps me in the construction business”. Neyedli continues, “I am able to see something created out of nothing, or something new replacing the old: that is very satisfying. One gets the feeling of accomplishment. I do have to spend much time at my computer, working on estimates and on the telephone with the different trades but mostly I am a hands-on type of guy so with Dunamis Projects I get a balance of all aspects of the business.”

Real estate is more than just a career choice “Real estate is more than just a career choice for me, it’s a passion!” says real estate agent Troy Fischer. “Same as living in Peachland!” “I am a 23-year Peachlander and very proud of it. I raised my kids here, I do most of my business here and I also give back here by hosting charity events that this town has come to rely on every year; the bus shuttles for the May long weekend car show and the paper shredding event in the first weekend in June.” “When choosing a realtor or a place you want to live, I think you should make an educated decision and hire someone who not only knows the area well but lives in it,” Fischer continues. If you’re going to list your home, go with a local who not only knows the market but loves it the way you do! Here’s what Troy’s clients are saying about him: “As first time home buyers we were very nervous and new to the process of purchasing a new home, which in turn meant a ton of questions and concerns. Troy took all of our criteria into consideration when showing us homes and was great in providing information about different properties
and really paid attention to what we wanted in a home. Troy was always available to answer our questions and tool the time to really explain all the details of the home buying process. Having Troy’s expertise and experience really eased our concerns and gave us confidence in purchasing our first home. We would highly recommend Troy Fischer to anyone who is looking for purchase a new home!” - M & C De Kock “Thanks very much, Troy, for the hard work you put into selling our house! You were able to sell in 42 days. You always kept us updated on showings and what is happening in our area. In a tough market, you did a fantastic job. We recommend that you call Troy Fischer to sell your home!” - M & C Minnix, Peachland “I have bought and sold many houses over the years but have never found a REALTOR® who actually cares as much about his clients than Troy. There is no doubt that Troy loves what he does and it shows by his passion, hard work and dedication. The proof is in the pudding; he listed and had an accepted offer on our home in less than 3 days! TAMMIE GILBERT, TMG BUSINESS SERVICES 250.767.6521 • www.TMGBusinessServices.ca
It’s all about taking the stress out of your life At the end of the week, there are more important things to account for than your books. That’s where Tammie Gilbert of TMG Business Services comes in. “It’s all about taking the stress out of their life, so that my clients can do the business they enjoy doing,” says Gilbert, who is a certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) with The Institute of Professional Bookkeepers of Canada. “It’s taking away the part people don’t want to deal with, so they can do what they do best. And that is promoting their business,” she emphasized. And for Gilbert, helping her clients’ business shine is what it’s all about. “Our mission at TMG Business Services is to provide high quality and affordable accounting and tax services, while being responsive to our clients needs,” she explained. “We provide efficient, helpful support to our entrepreneurs, small businesses and organizations in financial record keeping and office administration so we can help our clients increase their efficiency, profitability and growth.” Gilbert says TMG also serves as a link between the business owners and their financial consultants, banking officers, and government agents, by interpreting and fulfilling tasks in record keeping that may be beyond the interest, skill or ability of the business owner. “We provide value to our clients with these added services because it’s important to understand accounting reports and the importance of strong cash controls,” she explained. As a Peachland business owner for nearly a decade, Gilbert credits customer service as the key to TMG’s longevity, and has earned accolades from her clients for her expertise and ability to meet the personal needs of her customers. “I have been working with Tammie for nearly five years and have come to rely on her for all of my accounting needs,”
Tammie Gilbert, CPB. writes Andrea Costa. “Tammie is extremely thorough, helpful and easy to discuss any matters concerning personal or business accounts. As we do not live in the same city most correspondence is completed online and electronically. The process is seamless and efficient. I sincerely recommend Tammie and her services for any personal needs or any size business.” Kathy Daniels, another longtime client of Gilbert’s, says she is “continually impressed by the excellent service that TMG Business Services provides.” “I have used TMG Business Services for the past seven years,” Daniels said. “Tammie offers fast, efficient and professional services. I would highly recommend TMG Business Services for all your business and personal tax requirements.” As a business owner, controller, accounting technician, consultant, bookkeeper and trainer for more than 30 years, Gilbert says she loves keeping ahead of the curve when it comes to changing tax laws and accounting standards, and frequently undertakes extensive train-
PEACHLAND AND WESTSIDE
ing and educational courses, to keep her firm up-to-date. “I’m always upgrading my knowledge,” she notes. “It keeps us competitive.” Gilbert brought her services to the Okanagan in 2008, where she has served a large and varied client base, including industries such as light manufacturing, service, retail and hospitality, as well as professionals. But the business didn’t build itself overnight. After spending several years working for CGA and Chartered Accountant firms, the Peachland resident says she had a desire to be more involved with individuals and small business. She says she established TMG Business Services with that focus in mind. “I like to provide a high level of service to our clients and be responsive to my clients’ needs. Some want a lot of involvement from me, and others want less. It’s all about making their needs my priority so they can continue to be successful and happy.”

Notaries public can do more than sign documents Whether you are purchasing real estate, writing a will or appointing a power of attorney, Odina Skovgaard says she can help. But her services extend well beyond witnessing and signing documents. “Everyone needs a notary public at some point,” Skovgaard noted. “But we can do so much more than just swear affidavits or certify copies. We’re highly specialized.” “And we also do real estate transfers and estate planning too.” Additionally, Skovgaard, who owns and operates Lakeside Notary in Peachland, offers a number of services, and is able to draft, authorize and administer a wide range of documents including: wills, power of attorney and representation agreements. “A will is a very important estate planning document for anyone who owns property, has substantial assets, has children, or wants to ensure their estate devolves as they choose,” Skovgaard notes. “Without a will, the law decides who inherits your property and assets.” As Peachland’s Notary Public since 2012, Skovgaard has become a trusted member of the community, providing quali-

ty, care and expertise to the communities of West Kelowna, Peachland and Summerland. Commissioned as a member of the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia in 2012, Odina completed her undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser University in 2003, with a major in Criminology and a minor in Psychology, before receiving her Masters in Applied Legal Studies (MA ALS) in 2011. “I knew I wanted to be self-employed,” Skovgaard says, “and I knew I wanted to work within the legal system. This seemed like a perfect fit. Being self-employed, I get out of my business exactly what I put into it.” Odina lives and works in the community where she practices, and has the expertise and knowledge to serve you and your needs. “We moved from the coast two and a half years ago. We could have chosen anywhere in B.C. to relocate, but we chose Peachland due to its beautiful waterfront, the people, and the climate. Peachland is awesome. Let’s create more reasons for people to be here!” “I love that I get to talk to people all day long. I also get to share my knowledge and passion (for the law) with my clients. Every so often I get flowers or a thank-you card from a client that I have gone the extra mile for and that makes it all worth it!”

Westside Curb Appeal has a passion for Peachland If your house doesn’t look appealing from the street, Westside Curb Appeal can help you with that! Their slogan is “1ST impression, 2ND looks” and they definitely will give people a reason to stop and take a second look at your home. Chris & Denise Krahn, owners of Westside Curb Appeal, say their focus is creating curb appeal from the outside and bringing it into your home. Denise Krahn, owner, and half of the husband and wife team that operates Westside Curb Appeal Inc. says the focus is creating curb appeal that will add value and enjoyment to the home. But for the Krahns, curb appeal is more than a real estate term. It’s about creating a home. Six years ago Peachland was growing and the pair noticed that renovation businesses weren’t catering to small jobs, so they decided to fill that gap. Beginning with their trademark pergolas, the Krahns launched Westside Curb Appeal Inc. Their attention to detail and commitment to customer care earned them a sterling reputation among their clientele and they soon expanded, adding the installation of siding, decking and railing to the list of services they provide. The couple focused on improving the exteriors of homes, but they didn’t stay outside for long. As people began to focus more on making their houses into homes, the Krahns discovered an increasing need for indoor renovations, and have built a reputation based on high quality work and their ability to make customers happy no matter what the budget is. When working with a client Denise says she loves to go into each individual customer’s home to get to know them and their
personality so she can offer a design that will fit into their lifestyle and provide them with the space they have always wanted. Building individual customer relationships and providing quality workmanship is the primary focus for the Krahns, and the biggest advantage for Westside Curb Appeal. Over the years Westside Curb has grown and Denise says that is largely due to the number of referrals. Westside Curb Appeal Inc. believes in improving the community as well as just improving the houses in it. “We strongly believe in supporting local, and supporting the smaller companies,” Chris says. Westside Curb Appeal Inc. is the only fully trained and certified licensed dealer/installer in the area for TUFDEK vinyl decking “The Worlds Strongest Vinyl Decking” and Innovative Aluminum Systems Inc. railing. When people hear the word Audiologist, they sometimes follow it up with a question, “Do you work on stereos or TV’s?” I suppose it’s similar to an Optician being confused with an Obstetrician, but in that case, I would hope the confusion would be sorted out prior to showing up for an eye exam at the wrong medical clinic! How prevalent hearing loss is in the general population? A John Hopkins University study found that 1 in 5 Americans have some form of hearing loss, severe enough to impact their communication. Our job as hearing professionals is to assess the hearing condition of our patients/clients, determine if there is hearing loss present and the type and severity of the hearing loss. There may be a condition requiring a referral to an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist). There are a few serious conditions we screen for in our audiological assessments that go beyond that simple test of beeps and tones. Almost everyone has experienced ringing in their ears at some point in their life, even if only briefly.
If you’ve ever been to see Mick Jagger in concert, you know what I’m talking about! This is known as tinnitus, and it’s not only heard as ringing, but also can be heard as a buzzing, humming or other perceived sound in one or both ears. This condition may be due to past damage from loud noise exposure, or it can also be an indicator of a more serious problem with your inner ear or the auditory nerve communication with your brain. Tinnitus should be discussed with your physician, as it’s also a possible side effect of medication. Often, we are the professionals some people would rather not see, but I honestly do not understand why! Your Dentist will use a drill in your mouth, your Optometrist will puff air into your eyeball, but we simply try to determine how well you hear very soft sounds! Doesn’t seem so bad to me. Maybe you’ve been poked by certain soft talking and mumbling family members to have your hearing tested. You’ve resisted in earnest, stating, “My hearing is fine, you just need to speak more clearly!” If this is you, it’s time for a baseline test Tom Millar

to assess the situation. There are many negative effects of untreated hearing loss that are no laughing matter. The National Council on Aging conducted a study in 1999 “surveying nearly 4,000 adults with hearing loss and their significant others that showed significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other psychosocial disorders in individuals with hearing loss who were not wearing hearing aids.” Hearing loss is not all that uncommon, but the denial of it is all too common, For some, they’ve believed the myth that hearing aids will make them look old, yet they will constantly ask others to accommodate their hearing loss by speaking louder and turning up the TV so loud that everyone flees the living room covering their ears. Let’s talk about one of the ways we treat hearing loss. Surgical intervention is only available for hearing loss treatment in a small number of cases. Most cases of age-related hearing loss require the regular use of hearing devices. Today’s hearing aids do much more than simply amplify sounds. Hearing aids are now so small and discreet, they’re micro computers that are a technological marvel! Through advanced electronics, they even have the ability to automatically detect background noise and filter it out so you can hear more effectively in group conversation. Most solutions to common hearing aid problems such as whistling are solved with fully automatic features. When you find yourself asking your friend or family member reluctantly repeating themselves for you again, consider coming in to NexGen Hearing for a full hearing evaluation, and we will be happy to provide you with a full hearing evaluation and in-depth explanation of your results. When it comes to treating hearing loss and or tinnitus, it’s very important to have strong support in order to achieve a successful outcome. Don’t come alone to your hearing test–bring along that someone who knows you well. They will be integral in the process, and hopefully cheer you on as you take that important first step to Better Hearing and Better Living! – Tom Millar, NexGen Hearing NexGen founder Marke Hambley, is also the President of the Canadian chapter of the Hear4U Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to “Eliminate or reduce the impact of hearing impairment in underserved populations around the world”. Please consider the donation of used hearing aids and partner with Hear4U physicians, surgeons and volunteers in helping the hearing impaired in Uganda and Zimbabwe. Hearing aids can be donated to any NexGen Hearing location. Additionally, we do accept hearing aid donations for our local Hearing Aid Donation Program so that we can continue to provide treatment to those in our local communities who cannot otherwise access hearing health care due to their financial constraints.
