ERIC HALL The Peachland Sportsmen’s Association (PSA) is very well known in this community. Previous president, Al Springer, was one of the key people in the building of the Peachland Pier. He developed fishing programs for people with disabilities and the pier was part of his vision of making that possible. The PSA was established in 1981 and has about 200 members. It has been involved in many community projects including protecting streams and planting trees. They value their hunter heritage and have a mission of responsible stewardship of the land and water for wildlife conservation. Current president, Geoff Hartland, was at the Wellness Centre on Tuesday to hand over a cheque for $500. This donation came with the cooperation of the West Kelowna Warriors. Our local ice hockey team is also known by their old name - the Westside Warriors. They allow organisations to run the 50/50 draw at their games and use the proceeds. So the Warriors made it happen; the PSA did the work and the Wellness Centre gets help with their programs; a real win/win.

JEAN SAUL, DEBORAH Livingstone and Dave Johnston in front of the Beach Ave mural Dear Editor, A wonderful surprise came our way this week! Dave Johnston presented the Peachland Arts Council with a cheque for $575 from the Vantage One fund that he set up to collect donations for repairing the vandalism damage done to our Rotary Historic town mural. Then imagine our delight to hear from Jean Saul at the Royal Canadian Legion that they have also provided another donation for an additional $500! We now have $1,075 in the kitty for repairs. Our plan is to repaint the spoiled areas and spray the whole wall with an anti-graffiti coating. We’ll wait now for warm temperatures for ample drying time. We have had so many local artists and businesses contact us offering their assistance with the work when we start in the spring. We’re sending our heartfelt thanks to those who donated to the repair fund. Thank you Dave for caring so much and getting the word out and thank you Jean for the matching donation! Our local Legion is one of our greatest supporters of all our programs! We truly treasure our town’s history and wish for everyone to enjoy Artist, Robyn Lake’s wonderful time captured images in the mural for many years to come. There’s never enough money ERIC HALL Watching last week’s council meeting, I was reminded of one of the biggest problems of being a member of council - Peachland’s budget is limited. It is always necessary to find a balance between doing what the community wants and keeping tax increases in check. A 2 per cent tax increase is considered the most that is politically acceptable and many would vote for no increase at all. Take for example the police presence in Peachland; our poll shows that residents would like a greater police presence. But are they willing to pay for it? We might find out during the next few days (our new poll). When Peachland’s population went above 5,000 a few years ago, we lost the federal subsidy given to small communities; so now we pay more. If Peachland had its own police force we would need an office, support staff and a senior officer in charge; none of that comes cheap. We could pay more and have an officer assigned specifically to Peachland. At the moment we pay a portion of the total cost of the West Kelowna detachment and that is an effective way to keep the cost down. Many people believe that if Peachland grows we will have lower taxes (spread the burden). The reality is that as communities grow they need more staff, and staff costs are a big part of the tax bill. At last week’s council meeting there were two separate requests for new staff positions because of additional workloads. The requests were deferred until the budget review. And members of council know that when it comes to the budget, the 2 per cent limit will determine what gets approved.
I found it interesting that during the Civic Grants review at the January 14th council meeting, members of council asked many questions of those who were looking for grant money, which in some cases was $1000 for the year. That was in contrast to the next item which was to extend the contract with Urban Systems, as our Municipal Consulting Service. The contract extension was approved unanimously for two years until December 31st 2021. As reported previously in the View, Counc. Terry Condon told staff that he wanted more detailed information at that time in order to make sure we are getting value for money. The report to council gave no details of the money paid to Urban Systems; it would have been interesting to see which projects they did and what the specific costs were. In 2016 Peachland paid Urban Systems $453,000, in 2017 $568,000 and in 2018 $1,566,000. I expect that much of the increase of a million dollars in 2018 was related to the design of our water treatment plant. But I would have been interested to see a more detailed analysis of what those costs were. I know that Urban Systems has knowledge and expertise that is very important to Peachland and they have been, in effect, our second planning department. They are also project managers for the construction of our $20 million water treatment plant. But perhaps the time has come to bring more of that work in house; that may be the way that Peachland can increase its staff without increasing taxes. It makes sense to continue using Urban Systems because of their knowledge of Peachland, but using more of our own staff should result in reduced costs. We might even be able to dream of lower taxes, but don’t bank on that.

COMMUNITY
Phone contact program can save Peachland senior’s lives DR. GARY HEDGE PRESIDENT
Peachland Community Police
As a member of the Peachland Community Police, I have written several guest columns for the Peachland View that covered a variety of topics. Most citizens know about our Community Patrols, Speed Watch operations and our presence at District functions as we are highly visible to the public. The Peachland Community Police members do offer another service for our community which is extremely important, yet vastly under utilized, our Senior Telephone Contact Program. Our office members contact seniors daily by phone to ensure that they are well and not in need of any assistance. This service is a great comfort to their families who may live very far away. Our daily telephone contact program involves calling a list of seniors who enroll at the Peachland Community Police Office, located at 4440 5th. St. which is next door to the Peachland Wellness Centre. The seniors are called daily between 1 and 4 p.m. In 2019, our members made 916 of these calls. If the senior does not respond, our members will try to contact them three more times in the following hour. If there is still no response, the members of the Peachland Community Police will contact their designated emergency contacts. If this is unsuccessful, the Peachland Community Police members will attend the house to investigate. If they discern that there is a problem, the members then contact the RCMP. This is a strictly voluntary program, but one which is severely under-utilized based on the population and mean age of citizens in Peachland. We live in a world where emails and social media platforms such as Facebook have become the norm for communicating. Many seniors are computer illiterate. Consequently, daily contact with families and neighbours does not exist. There have been situations in the past when relatives have contacted the Peachland Community Police. The relatives live out of the country and were unable to contact an elderly parent for many days.

Annual General Meeting Friday, Feb 28th, 2020 at 7 pm (Following 6 pm Potluck)
Held at the 50+ Activity Centre 5672 Beach Ave., Peachland BC
In a recent case, our members were contacted and they subsequently attended the house. They were unable to get a response at the doors. They talked to the neighbours to see if anyone had a key for the residence in question. As no one had a key, the West Kelowna RCMP were called. Unfortunately, this individual was found deceased. A daily contact call may have prevented this incident if the cause was a fall and not a sudden medical issue. In Canada today, every 13 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall and every 20 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 and older, and the risk of falls increases proportionately with age. At 80 years old, over half of seniors fall annually. Here are some more surprising facts and statistics related to seniors and falling: • 87 per cent of all fractures in the elderly are due to falls. Two-thirds of those who fall will do so again within six months. • Among people aged 65 to 69, one out of every 200 falls results in a hip fracture. That number increases to one out of every 10 for those aged 85 and older. • One fourth of seniors who fracture a hip from a fall will die within six months of the injury. • Many falls do not result in injuries, yet 47 per cent
of non-injured seniors who fall cannot get up without assistance. • For seniors who fall and are unable to get up on their own, the period of time spent immobile often affects their health outcomes. Muscle cell breakdown starts to occur within 30 to 60 minutes of compression due to falling. Dehydration, pressure sores, hypothermia, and pneumonia are other complications that may result. Falls, with or without injury, also carry a heavy quality-of-life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness. The most profound effect of falling is the loss of independent living. The Senior Telephone Contact Program which is offered by the Peachland Community Police can give them this independence. We, as a society need to engage our seniors. If they are your neighbour, watch out for them and if possible get a relative’s phone number, especially if their family is not living in the area. Most importantly is to encourage them to register with the Peachland Community Police Senior Telephone Contact Program. It is just a simple, daily call which can offer so much comfort for the senior and their family. No one should die alone, please register now.

Peachland has community spirit ERIC HALL Sometimes things happen that make you shake your head and the defacing of our mural on Beach Avenue was such an event. It was damaged last year and then in the summer many good people worked hard to restore it, putting in 172 hours of effort. And then in October it was spoiled again. This was not tagging or a graffiti artist; it was pure vandalism. And the paint that was used is very difficult to remove. Peachland Community Arts Council President, Deborah Livingstone, told me just how difficult it will be. First paint thinner will be applied and then a cleaner. Then the area
will be coated with a primer before it is repainted. The final layer will be a sealant to better protect the mural in the future. Deborah has written a letter in today’s View, thanking those who helped to raise money and since she wrote her letter another $50 has been donated. This just shows what a wonderful community spirit we have here. Dave Johnston raised money with the help of staff at our local credit union, Vantage One, and Jean Saul presented a cheque from the Legion. In the same week we can see the results of the volunteer efforts of the Peachland Sportsmen’s Association; it makes you proud to live in Peachland.

Boys and Girls Clubs to celebrate Pink Shirt Day PATRICIA BARROWS
PEACHLAND BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB It’s getting to be that time of year again, time to bring out your pink shirt and support a very important initiative! Pink Shirt Day has become a national and provincial movement to raise awareness about the impacts of bullying and promote the positive message of kindness, inclusion and belonging. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Okanagan will be recognizing Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 26, 2020. As part of our mission, clubs throughout the Okanagan provide children, youth and families a safe place to belong with programs that focus on promoting compassion, understanding, leadership, resilience and inclusion. We believe that every child and youth deserves to be treated with kindness
and respect and we are committed to creating a culture based around that belief. Through positive role modeling and engaging programming, we want to help our children and youth learn that when people are kind, compassionate and understanding, good things can happen. Along with encouraging everyone to wear pink on Feb. 26, club staff have planned many fun activities that promote kindness, resiliency and empathy. Our preschool members learn about belonging, sharing and friendship. In the After School program, children will be taking part in a “Kindness Clip” activity where they share messages of kindness and provide affirmations and encouragement to others. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Okanagan are very excited to be hosting the sixth annual
Pink Shirt Day Breakfast presented by Telus. The event will be held at the Laurel Packinghouse on Feb. 26 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Enjoy a fantastic breakfast, support influential programming, and be inspired by award-winning guest speaker Linda Edgecombe. This year’s theme is “Lift Each Other Up and Be Kind.” Through her engaging and entertaining talk, Edgecombe will share strategies to increase resiliency while making your world a happier, kinder place to be. This event sells out each year so be sure to purchase your tickets quickly at w w w.boysandgirlsclubs. ca. Individual tickets are $50 or book a full or half table for a reduced rate. We would love to see everyone in Peachland including businesses, schools, organizations, and individuals wearing pink on Feb. 26.

CLUB KID of the Month
Nixon has attended a variety of programs at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs in Peachland over the past four years. This summer he participated in Jays Care Rookie League growing his baseball skills and most recently he has been attending our Bounce Back League program where he is learning racquet sports. He shows an eagerness to learn and grow his skills. Along with being athletic, Nixon is also very artistic, drawing great pictures. Staff describe Nixon as well-rounded, supportive, and compassionate, always first to step in and help others and make sure that everyone is having fun. He has natural leadership abilities and is a great influence on those around him. He made many friends at club and it is easy to see why. COMMUNITY
Raising Alzheimer’s awareness: stopping stigma and speaking up SARA STEPHENS
PEACHLAND WELLNESS CENTRE January was Alzheimer Awareness month. Dementia is a general term that refers to a variety of brain disorders and is caused by physical changes in the brain. Currently, 564,000 Canadians are living with dementia and that number is expected to rise as Canada’s population ages. If you or someone you love has dementia, you are certainly not alone. People living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia can have fulfilling and rewarding lives, participate in activities and enjoy the love and support of family and friends. Unfortunately, some stigma still exists about dementia. Research has shown that many Canadians believe they could not live well with dementia, and some even feel that their lives would be over if they had dementia. We at the Peachland Wellness Centre want to challenge these outdated beliefs and encourage the community to increase their awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. On March 3, the Peachland Wellness Centre will be hosting a workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at our building at 4426 5th St., in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of BC. The topic of the workshop is Accessing Services. If you would like to help fight the stigma around dementia and be part of creating a dementia-friendly society, The Alzheimer Society of BC offers these suggestions: • Learn the facts. Share your knowledge about dementia with others, including family and friends, especially if you hear something that isn’t true. Talking about dementia lessens our fear and increases understanding.
Black Version
• Don’t make assumptions. Dementia is a progressive disease and affects each person differently. A diagnosis doesn’t mean the person will have to stop his daily routine or give up working right away. • Watch your language. Do you use statements like “she’s losing her marbles,” or “he has old-timer’s disease?” Don’t make light of dementia. We don’t tolerate racial jokes, yet dementia jokes are common. • Treat people with dementia with respect and dignity. A person’s ability to do things we take for granted will change as the disease progresses. But no matter what stage of the disease, she’s still the person she always was, with unique abilities and needs. Appreciate who she is. Don’t talk around her or avoid her at family and social gatherings. • Be a friend. People with dementia don’t want to lose their friends nor do they want to stop doing activities they enjoy. Be supportive. Stay in touch and connected. Social activity helps slow the progression of the disease and lets people with dementia know you care. • Speak up! Don’t stand for media stereotypes that perpetuate stigma and myths. Call or write your local radio or television station or newspaper. Media is a powerful force in affecting how we act and think. Caregivers play an important role in supporting and enriching the lives of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This caregiving role comes with its own unique demands, and caregivers need support, for their own mental and physical health. PWC partners with the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia to hold a Dementia Caregivers Support Group on Wednesday mornings. If you would like more information about this group, please call 250-860-0305 to register.

Help the University of Guelph improve hearing healthcare across Canada. Connect Hearing and Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing. Study Parameters The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from one-on-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.
Why Participate? It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In this study you’ll be playing an important part in determining the key factors around identifying hearing loss and what influences the decision to seek treatment.
Participants will be significantly adding to growing knowledge surrounding hearing loss. You can register to be part of this groundbreaking new hearing study by calling 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study *Wingfield, A., Tun, P. A., & McCoy, S. L. (2005).
