The Peachland Fire and Rescue Brigade will host the tenth annual Schmockey Tournament at Cousins Park this Sunday afternoon.

Residents are invited to come out to watch or participate in the family friendly outdoor event.

Schmockey is a field version of hockey played with a softball instead of a puck.

Peachland Fire and Rescue Brigade president Matt Stoltz says there are no age limits or restrictions to team dynamics and the tournament is organized to encourage recreation outdoors for friends and families alike. Participation in the event is free of charge.

Organizers say teams must have a minimum of six players on the field, with as many substitutes as they would like, only entering onto the field with the referee’s permission and signal.

Hockey sticks will be provided. Newcomers are welcome and invited to participate in the one-day family event.

First street in Ponderosa Pincushion development to be called Trails Place Joanne Layh Peachland View The first street in the Ponderosa Pincushion development will be called Trails Place, Peachland council decided last week.

The developer chose the name Trails Place because of the geographical relevance to the existing trail network and to achieve consistency with the subdivision name, The Trails.

While developers are encouraged to meet with the Peachland Historical Society to discuss proposed street names and to select appropriate names from the street naming master list, on stratified streets they are not re-

quired to do so. If the developer had chosen to select a name from the street naming master list, the Peachland Historical Society would then provide an endorsement of the selected name, which would subsequently be submitted to council for their approval. Trails Place was not a selection on the street naming master list; however, the Peachland Historical Society responded to say they are in full agreement with the proposal and concur with the rationale for choosing Trails Place as the name of the first street.

Director of planning and development services Cory Gain told the committee of

the whole last week that while the street is within a strata and the naming of streets within a strata development does not require the official response or approval of the Peachland Historical Society or council, the municipality would like to continue to treat all street names the same way so that there is consistency and everyone is located quickly and effectively.

In her recommendation to council, Gain also said in a strata subdivision of 2,000 plus residents, not having street names could be disastrous for access of emergency vehicles.

“It is very important for fire and life

safety purposes that emergency personnel can locate properties in the most expedient manner possible.

Several years ago it became an issue where we had these larger strata units throughout the Okanagan Valley where calls can be made where there is no street name and it is just numbers,” Gain said. “What came of it was that the 9-1-1 folks had requested us to name these streets so they could effectively find them just as they could find any other property.”

Trails Place is a street that loops around then goes off in another direction, which some members of council suggested could be confusing.

It was also suggested that parts of it be called different things such as Trails Avenue and Trails Crescent to indicate there are different circumstances.

“That concept was brought forward and the 9-1-1 emergency service providers are much against that kind of naming program where you have the same name with different suffixes because when someone phones 9-1-1 they’re not realizing whether they are on a street, place or avenue,” Gain said. “We like to make sure they’re unique so they can be found easily.”

Not approving the motion to accept the name would delay the homeowners from receiving occupancy, chief administrative officer Elsie Lemke said.

“They are quite anxious to get this council’s approval for this proposal,” Lemke said.

“My view is they obviously thought about this from a marketing perspective.

It makes sense then.

You’ve had the discussions with them. I think we should just concede to their request and move on,” Mayor Fielding said.

Council approved the recommendation, resulting in the first homes built at the Ponderosa Pincushion development now being on Trails Place.

Where does Mr. Hurd stand on council’s uncritical support for some business interests in Peachland?

I want to reply in a roundabout way to Mr. Hurd’s call out to residents to express their reaction to his musing about running for council in the 2014 election.

Recent council minutes show Peachland council continues to give its uncritical support to some proponents of the business sector in Peachland by granting 11 street parking spaces on Sundays for Farmers and Crafters Market vendors, even though the market fails to attract the participation of Peachland farmers and crafters. I visit the market several times every year expressly to find and support this part of the local economy and I am continually disappointed by their absence. The market may serve the downtown business sector purpose by bringing tourists into town on Sundays, but that is fairly unsatisfying to me, a resident taxpayer of this town.

Expanding on this point, as The View story of April 28, 2013 made clear, the residential taxpayers provide 92.6 per cent of the taxes in Peachland, while the business and commercial taxes amount to less than 5 per cent. It seems to me that council needs to pay more attention to satisfying the needs and wants of residents and to improving the existing quality of life that we residents experience. To do that, council needs to pay less attention to the demands of the business and commercial lobbyists such as the market society, the chamber of commerce and various land development groups. In my view, these lobbyists exert far more influence shaping council decisions than is warranted by their contributions to the quality of life or economic

benefits for residents.

I have no objection to a self-supporting tourist attraction that helps to keep Peachlanders employed in local businesses, although I do think the children’s park venue is an inappropriate place for commercial enterprise.

But I do object to the culture of uncritical support that has developed over several councils for giving projects the go ahead when those projects deliver minimal benefits to the 92.6 per cent of us that council has been elected to represent. The residential taxpayer is bearing the cost burden of infrastructure development for water system expansion, sewer installation, district staff payroll increases, and other infrastructure expansions to service the needs of land developers and other businesses that foresee a profit in expanding the population of this town, and the self-interest of various groups including the district’s bureaucracy. But to date, no one has asked me, a resident of 21 years, whether I want the town’s population to double, triple, quadruple in the next 20 years. No one has asked me what I think will happen to the value of my home when 6,000 new homes come onto the market.

I look forward to hearing more about these issues into the next municipal election campaign and I’ll be looking to vote for candidates who show me they can re-engage their critical thinking skills when business and commercial lobbyists speak.

The program is available to help individuals who are not able to complete their income tax and benefit returns by themselves. To be eligible, your tax situation must be simple with an annual income of less than $30,000 for a single person. Volunteers cannot complete returns for more complex situations such as for a deceased person, self-employed individuals or someone with rental income or capital gains or losses.

The Federal Government of Canada has been collecting

our taxes since 1917.

Prior to the First World War, Canadian governments were reluctant to impose income taxes as they were focused on encouraging immigration to our country. However, wartime expenses changed that focus and a “temporary” tax was introduced.

Despite these new taxes, the government still accumulated considerable debts during the war and has needed this source of revenue ever since.

Many people may not realize that filing an annual tax return is vital to ensuring that you receive all the government benefits that are available to you. The in-

formation you provide in the process sets the limits for GST credits, Pharmacare allowance, and the guaranteed income supplement, just to name a few of the benefits.

It is also interesting to note that there are many sources of money people can receive that are not taxable in Canada. Some of these include gifts and inheritances, lottery winnings, proceeds of a life insurance policy and the capital gain on the sale of your principal residence, to name a few.

The program starts February 17 and runs until April 17, each Monday from 1 p.m. 3 p.m. The process is

very simple. You can just drop by during those hours or call for an appointment. Don’t forget to bring all your tax forms (T slips and tax packages), along with your 2012 Notice of Assessment. You would have received this form in the mail last spring after you filed your return.

Overseas travel is a popular goal of men and women on the verge of retirement or those who have already called it a career. But safety must remain a priority when travelling abroad.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL

Pete Seeger taught us to be aware of the little joys around us Elaine Diggle Peachland United Church Yes, there are only 313 shopping days to Christmas. Why on earth am I talking about Christmas in February, when we are still dealing with our credit card bills? Relax. We are not proposing that the commercial aspects of Christmas should be foremost in our minds year round.

However, what I do want to bring to mind is the announcement of God’s angel to the shepherds out on the hillsides watching over their flocks of sheep.

“Don’t be afraid, I am bringing you news of a great joy.” When did you last feel a great joy, much joy or even a small joy? Be honest. Most of enjoy certain pleasures, such as our iPods, large TVs and cars with heated seats. But joy, deep joy? Somehow our present day culture seems to have squeezed joy out of our lives, while filling them with pleasure.

John Killinger tells a story of a friend of his who told him about two soul-winners in Texas, a novice and a veteran, who would go out each day to win souls for the Lord. At the end of one such day they pulled into the driveway of a house in an area of twoacre lots. There was a

Porsche and a BMW in the driveway and through a large picture window they could see the homeowner relaxed in his recliner with a beer can in one hand and his eyes glued to an enormous screen across the room showing a football game in progress.

Just as the veteran soul-winner reached out to ring the doorbell, the novice put a hand on his arm and said, “Just a minute, before we go in, tell me what kind of good news do we have for him?” The man appeared to have everything to bring him pleasure – fancy cars, a beautiful home and a great entertainment centre, similar to the rich farmer in a story Jesus told [Luke 12:16-21].

Jesus said, “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. The rich man thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And

the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.” Pleasures are ephemeral. All too soon we seek some new pleasure; something more exciting; some new version of our toys. Joy is lasting. Joy is of the soul. Most of us have experienced a limited number of great joys in our lives. For many adults, the birth of a child is a moment of such exquisite joy that they can recall it all their lives. However, our lives are often filled with many small joys that we can overlook if we are not open to them.

For example, there is the joy of walking down the road with the hand of your trusting young child in yours and the joy of singing with friends, yet so often we

Joy can change our lives and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. It is deep, unchanging, and it brings life. May we always be open to and aware of the little joys that surround us.

Speaking of singing, the gift that singer Pete Seeger brought to thousands of people over the years helped his audience joyfully sing social justice causes into life. It was his song, We Shall Overcome that accompanied the civil rights workers on their marches. If I Had A Hammer and Where Have All The Flowers Gone were emblematic of the anti-Vietnam War protests and kept people focused on the futility of such a war. Turn, Turn, Turn and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine were also popularized by such folk singers as Peter, Paul and Mary.
