Council puts brakes on Bourbon Street BBQ food truck application TREVOR NICHOLS

Food truck operators Brenda Steadman and Brian Desrochers are expressing disappointment after council denied their application to set up shop in town.

The owners of the Bourbon Street Barbecue food truck say they would have contributed to Peachland economy and community, but will now set up shop in Penticton instead.

“It’s really sad because we’d like to employ local people, we buy locally, and that’s a big thing [for us], to help support the community,” Desrochers said, adding that he and Steadman often do charity events like fundraising for local clubs and feeding the homeless.

Early this year, Steadman and Desrochers applied for an exemption to the district’s sidewalk and right of way occupancy policy, asking to serve up grub at a designated food vendor area between 14th Street and Todd Road.

Their bright yellow, 7.6-metre-long truck far exceeds the 1.6-metre maximum length the district’s policy allows, so their request came before council on Feb. 23.

Director of Planning Cory Gain told the Committee of the Whole there would be some benefits to approving the application, “but following consultation with neighbouring property owners it was overwhelmingly obvious that there wasn’t the type of support we

According to Gain’s report, the district asked residents between 14th Street and Todd Road (including tenants of Lakeshore Gardens) for feedback on the exemption, and received approximately 80 responses.

More than 97 per cent of those responses were against

the exemption, with many citing concerns about noise pollution, bad smells, congestion and a negative visual impact on their neighbourhood.

Many councillors cited that feedback as a factor in their decision not to grant the exemption, including Couns. Mike Kent, Keith Thom and Peter Schierbeck, who all noted how the

truck didn’t fit in the character of the community.

Coun. Terry Condon expressed similar reservations, but suggested the truck might be better suited to a location close to 13th Street, near where the proposed Wibit water park would be constructed.

Coun. Pam Cunningham echoed Condon’s sentiments,

urging council to consider the benefits food trucks could bring to Peachland.

“These food trucks are becoming really popular, and people are attracted to them.

If we had another area that would accommodate the size, and have a few more, and if we were to get the Wibit water park this year, I think that would be an attraction,” she said.

“I think it’s still worth exploring the option.”

Steadman explained that she and Desrochers are moving from Alberta to the Okanagan to help run Todd’s RV and Camping, and had hoped to set up their truck nearby. She said they had already hired another couple to help them run it, and had been looking forward

to serving Peachland.

She said that while Penticton wasn’t their first choice, they will find a way to make it work.

“Down the road they’re going to have to change their thinking with food trucks,” she said.

“But it is what it is: some of these smaller towns, they just aren’t really up with the times.”

Province toughens up drinking and driving laws with new program VIEW STAFF New regulations are in place to clarify and toughen the consequences of drinking and drug affected driving in British Columbia, strengthening the province’s resolve to have the safest roads in North America by 2020.

Under the new program, drivers with certain serious prohibitions for drinking and drug affected driving are now required to participate in mandatory remedial programs designed to prevent this high

Interlock Program (IIP), for which a device is installed in the vehicle to prevent drivers from driving if they have consumed alcohol.

According to Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Morris, these measures will help both deter and prevent unsafe drivers from getting back on our roads. “There will no longer be financial or hardship considerations to exempt high-risk drivers from these remedial programs,” Morris wrote in an email on Feb. 16.

Starting April 1, disposing of waste at the Westside Transfer Station will come with a price tag.

The board of the Regional District of the Central Okanagan recently approved volume-based user fees at the Westside Residential Waste Disposal Centre on Asquith Road.

The site is has been Peachland residents’ main option for getting rid of yard waste since the closure of Peachland’s own waste transfer site on Oct. 1.

The new fees will mean a one dollar price tag for each bag of yard waste, a five dollar fee for a four by eight vehicle or utility trailer, 15 bucks a pop for a “larger hauling bed vehicle/ trailer,” and a $20 fee for a vehicle with a tandem axle trailer full of yard waste.

Rotheisler said that if volumes remain consistent the fees should generate approximately $120,000 a year, and that money will “go towards covering yard waste related expenses” like hauling the material and tipping fees.

Last year, those costs added up to just over $120,000, so the goal of the new fees is simply to offset that cost.

Rotheisler said he and his staff will monitor the effect of the increases, and report back to the

board if they aren’t having the desired effect.

At the Committee of the Whole on Feb. 24, Compost Site Select Committee Chair Eric Hall noted that the fee increases only further complicate the committee’s already difficult task of providing solutions to Peachland’s waste transfer site closure.

He said committee members have divergent opinions on the best course of action, but that the committee will give its final recommendations to council in two weeks’ time.

NEW FEES AT the Westside Transfer Station take effect April 1. Until then, Peachland residents can still deposit up to 250 kilograms of yard waste at the site free of charge.

He said that while it may not seem like a lot of extra material to deal with, last year the site also lost its low-cost disposal option and now has to truck waste all the way into the Glenmore landfill in Kelowna. That means three times the shipping cost, and double the tipping fees to dispose of its waste.

“There’s a bunch

of different cost factors coming into play here,” he said.

When Rotheisler spoke to the View in January about the possibility of tipping fee increases, he pointed out that higher prices can dissuade people from using the facility and lead to problems like illegal dumping, more unsightly premises and fire hazards as debris and waste pile up on people’s private prop-

erty.

On Feb. 24 he said the RDCO tried to mitigate those risks by keeping the new fees low enough “that people will decide the extra cost still is minimal compared to the benefit they get,” and keep them as simple as possible so it’s easy for people to pull out the cash to pay.

A Canadian tradition or a cheerleading mouthpiece?

For the past few months instead of watching the morning news, I’ve subscribed to cbc.ca so I can choose the news articles that interest me without having to listen to an entire news broadcast on the CBC or CTV news channels.

I started this before the recent federal election and when I first got online, I noticed that there was a comment section at the end of every CBC news article.

During the election there were some pretty heated comments back and forth among indi-

viduals participating in the forum. Some of the comments, I must say, weren’t all that nice, but the comments section is moderated in accordance with a list of rules that one should read and understand.

However, when it came to politicians there seemed to be more leeway than one would expect. In fact it was pretty well open season on all three parties, and party leaders; a lot of good comments, but a good deal of childish stuff as well...people get carried away.

After the liberal government came into power, the CBC started to change things. There was an announcement on cbc.ca, stating that henceforth, they would not be allowing any comments on any story that involved Indigenous people. This was supposed to be temporary; however it is not. Long story short, I emailed the CBC ombudswoman and complained about the CBC’s policy to close off See WHY CBC WON’T on page 5

In his letter to the editor, “A possible conflict of interest,” published in the Feb. 11 edition of the Peachland View, Robert Michael states that he believes there is a potential conflict of interest in Keith Thom being an entertainer and fundraiser, as well as councillor.

Michael further feels that “other council members, city staff and the public may be turning a blind eye to it.” However the evidence presented by him in regard to this potential “conflict of interest” boils down to, in my opinion, nothing more than conjecture.

Keith Thom was an entertainer at local Peachland events and restaurants before becoming a councillor. He continues to be an entertainer at these same events and restaurants now that he is a councillor. So what?

Michael notes that Mr. Thom “shamelessly flogs his CD at all the events” he entertains at and has been overheard “joking to patrons to vote for him in upcoming elections,” while playing in local restaurants.

He also points out that Mr. Thom “now has a paid position with a local non-profit organization, one that receives a municipal grant.”

Mr. Thom is not using his influence as a councillor to say he will be the only entertainer at an event or restaurant, and there is no evidence that he will use his new position to influence future municipal grants to the non-profit organization he now works for. I imagine he will excuse himself from any voting on this matter.

So all this “potential conflict of interest” Michael refers to in his letter boils down to is that Mr. Thom is continuing to make a living as a local entertainer, while also serving his community as a councillor in a small town.

Let me state my conflict of interest in writing this note: I consider Keith Thom a friend. Since moving to Peachland six months ago, my wife and I have been extremely impressed by the friendliness and level of community spirit in this town. From our neighbour, who came over with a case of beer to welcome us the day we moved in, even though he doesn’t drink, to other neighbours who go out of their way to stop by and make us feel welcome, to Tim the hardware store owner who greets everyone with a smile, to the Peachland legion’s over 50 slo pitch team that allowed my wife and I, as newcomers, to play even though we didn’t move here until mid season.

Peachland is a good town that punches far above its weight in terms of community events, warmth and spirit.

One of the most impressive people in this town, in my opinion, is Keith “Papa” Thom, who tirelessly donates his time (and his shepherd’s pie) at fundraisers to help the disadvantaged as he did just a few months ago, with others, at the Beach Ave Café.

To publicly criticize someone who spends so much of his time contributing to the community and to the welfare of those less fortunate, without a shred of evidence, is simply wrong.

Peachland needs people like Keith Thom; folks who demonstrably get up and make a positive difference in their community. Mr. Michael’s letter, in my opinion, was nothing more than an unsubstantiated cheap shot at a good citizen.

Weighing in on the bypass issue

My opinion is that the bypass is not only a Peachland issue but a transportation corridor plan.

Highway 97 runs through residential area. Having tankers, forestry, and tractor trailers flying through Peachland not safe and more serious accidents to come.

Does this section of highway 97 need to be widened to four lanes? Yes, for safety and the increase in local and tourist traffic. Have you walked on the sidewalks in West Kelowna? Oh my God; you can’t hear yourself think. Noise and fumes will kill you so a bypass for West Kelowna and West Bank is a must.

I can not believe that the MOTI does not have a 10, 15, 20 or maybe 50-year plan on how the increase in

transportation of goods will move through our cities.

My vision is for a bypass from the USA border; Osoyoos, Oliver, OK Falls and Penticton should bypass from above airport and possibly through to above Summerland, back to the newly widened section just outside of Summerland, moving along to the new Peachland bypass and moving to above West Kelowna to north of Vernon and working its way to Sicamous.

The Highway 1 has plenty of year-round traffic.

They have four-laned some areas and added more passing lanes, but I believe a new highway to Calgary and a cut off to Highway 2 for Edmonton is required.

MOTI must have a future plan and want us not to

believe they fly by the seat of their pants because we pay them for much more. I do remember back before the NDP government of Ontario started the province on the road to bankruptcy the MOTI had purchases of land required to build new highways to move traffic. What ever happened I don’t know but I tell you this: a trillion dollars would not fix this province.

The MOTI should not let the loss of coffee or burger sales stop safety, efficiency and common sense. I would also recommend that Highway 97 be an electronic toll highway. Keep in mind this would take 10 to 15 years to complete.

comments regarding stories about Indigenous people. She refused to act on my complaint, in fact.

I probably would have had more satisfaction complaining to my neighbour’s dog, but she did refer me to the CBC Director of Journalistic Accountability and Engagement.

I wrote to this gentleman, whom I shall call Jack, stating that I didn’t think that it was proper for the CBC to arbitrarily protect a group of people from public opinion, particularly when the CBC is subsidized by every Canadian in the

country regardless of anyone’s individual political stripe.

In short I stated that it appeared that the CBC was making a concerted effort to support the government‘s views and policies on certain First Nations issues, and that to disallow any comments was, in my view, denying my basic right to freedom of speech.

If CBC were a private broadcasting corporation, I would say they should have the freedom to do what they want, but this is our public broadcaster where each and every taxpaying Canadian contributes to CBC’s operation to the tune

of about 1.2 billion dollars per year.

They have no right to dictate to the Canadian public what we can or can’t comment on, particularly when this decision supports their political agenda.

Recently Rachel Notley, Alberta’s NDP Premier, barred Rebel Media journalists/reporters from taking part in their journalistic duties at the Alberta Legislature because she doesn’t want to hear what Rebel Media may report about her and her NDP government.

There is a direct parallel to the CBC’s actions and Notley’s, as they fall into the

same category of failing to allow everyone’s constitutional right to free speech.

CBC muzzles the public regarding negative comment about First Nations stories.

Notley muzzles a right wing journalist because of possible negative comments about her left wing government.

I have to make this clear to anyone reading this, that I am not necessarily for or against all policies regarding First Nations, but it is, in my opinion, an unprecedented and unethical measure for the CBC to muzzle the entire Canadian population on behalf of a selected group.

I won’t bore you with the details of three attempts I made to get to the real truth from this CBC director, but in his third email, he finally came out with the explanation in plain English.

The CBC wants to do some interviews, possibly programs or documentaries, on First Nations.

Jack didn’t elaborate, but the problem is that First Nations people refuse to be interviewed as long as there is criticism of First Nations people.

This prompted the CBC to arbitrarily eliminate the comments section on CBC.ca regarding Indigenous peoples’ stories.

He went on to say that Indigenous peoples’ stories published on CBC.ca generate more than their fair share of negative comments. I say “so what,” so do political stories, abortion, gun control, refugees, niqabs, and other controversial issues, but none of these stories are protected by eliminating public opinion.

After all, that’s the reason to have forums, to solicit public opinion.

So after some thought about this, I concluded this is a smoke screen for the CBC to promote the new government’s agenda and despite me stating this in my email, Jack denies that political partisanship has anything to do with this.

Then, why muzzle the Canadian population on this particular issue? Let them speak.

Bev Louie and Roger Hall don’t know if there will ever be justice for their daughter Roxanne.

The preliminary inquiry into the 26 year-old Osoyoos Indian Band member’s brutal murder last January began nearly one year ago and was expected to wrap on Feb. 19.

Instead, the preliminary hearing has been adjourned until March 10.

Against the solemn back beat of ceremonial drumming from the rallying members of all corners of the Okanagan First Nation community gathered in support of Louie and her family, in front of the Penticton courthouse last Friday morning, Judge Meg Shaw

told the audience of roughly 30 of Louie’s friends, family members and supporters gathered in the courtroom that it was not her first choice to have an adjournment in the matter, but had agreed to defence lawyer Don Skogstad’s request as long as court could reconvene “in a reasonable time frame.”

Skogstad requested the additional time to respond to comments made by Crown prosecutor Iain Currie.

“Basically this is being drawn out further over a lawyer’s hissy fit,” Louie family spokesperson Laurie Wilson said following Friday’s hearing.

“Right now most of the [Louie] family is in preservation mode.

They aren’t saying too much. But for them, this is the part that is terrifying. They don’t know what horrible piece of the story of how their daughter

died they are going to hear next and they don’t know if the people who killed her are going to face any real consequences.”

Wilson who is a family law advocate and policy analyst with the Okanagan Nation Alliance, later told The View that the mistrust of Canada’s legal system is fairly common among Canada’s First Nations communities.

“It’s pervasive throughout our justice system,” she noted. Roxanne Louie’s story, she added, is a perfect example.

Described by Wilson, and Louie’s friend, and the organizer of Friday morning’s rally Darlene George, as “a lively, happy woman with a million-dollar smile,” Louie spent much of her short life in the South Okanagan.

Last fall, after end-

ing her long-term relationship with her partner, with whom she had a three-yearold son, Louie decided to start a new life in Vancouver.

Wilson, whose daughters were close friends of Louie’s since childhood, said the young woman planned to continue her post-secondary education and study fashion design.

Last Christmas Louie and her son returned to the Okanagan to visit friends and family over the holidays.

Two days after she failed to make her scheduled flight from Penticton home to Vancouver, on Jan. 4, she was reported missing.

Unit Louie’s body was discovered Jan. 12 in the woods near Chute Lake about 40 minutes from Penticton.

Louie died between Jan. 3 and 6.

On Jan. 11, 2015, Grace Elinor Robotti, 66, and her brother Pier Louis Robotti, 62, turned themselves in, in relation to Louie’s death.

Grace, who was Louie’s grandmotherin-law, was later charged with the second-degree murder of Louie, Pier was accused of interfering with human remains and being an accessory after the fact.

The charges against Pier were upgraded and he, too, was charged with second degree murder.

A publication ban regarding Louie’s murder is currently in effect and prohibits The View from revealing any further details.

Last March both Robottis were released on $25,000 bail each.

The bail conditions of the co-accused siblings include a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and a no contact order between them.

For Wilson, the no-

tion that the Robottis were eligible to post bail is infuriating.

“It’s unbelievable that the despite the violent nature of Roxanne’s death, that her killers are walking around free,” Wilson said on Feb. 22.

She said unfortunately, no one within the Okanagan First Nations community, is surprised.

heels of the announcement of the approved national inquiry into murdered and missing indigenous women, sheds “much needed” light on what she says is the persistent issue of systemic tolerance of violence against aboriginal women.

An RCMP report published in 2014 revealed indigenous women represent four per cent of the Canadian population, but they account for 16 per cent of all murdered women and 11 per cent of all missing women.

Across the country, there were nearly 1,200 investigations into missing and murdered indigenous women across Canada from 1980 to 2012.

The report continued that there were 225 unsolved cases, including 120 homicides and 105 suspicious missing persons cases, A follow up review, published in June, 2015 concluded 21 of these files had since been closed, a nine per cent drop in unsolved cases.

“We all know that court is not where you go for justice in this country if you’re a woman – especially if you’re an Indian woman,” George told The View on Feb. 22.

“Justice is just not something that aboriginal women can expect.”

Ashton says MSP premium assistance will benefit seniors VIEW STAFF More people than ever qualify for assistance with Medical Services Plan premiums next year and it’s important to remind seniors to ensure they are eligible, Penticton MLA Dan Ashton said in a recent interview.

A recent survey by B.C. seniors advocate Isobel Mackenzie showed just 39 per cent of seniors knew about MSP premium assistance and 66 per cent pay full premiums when the number should be fewer than 50 per cent.

“It’s important that everyone who could be benefiting from this MSP assistance is doing so,” Ashton said. “Every penny counts for many of our seniors, and this assistance will be very meaningful.”

A one-time application must be filled out specifically for the premium assistance program.

Retroactive assistance may be provided for up to the previous six years.

Budget 2016 announced changes to MSP and premium assistance effective Jan. 1, 2017 which will help lower-income families, individuals and seniors with the cost of living.

MLA DAN ASHTON The B.C. government is investing an additional $70 million annually to enhance premium assistance.

About 335,000 people will see their premiums reduced, and an additional 45,000 people will no longer pay premiums at all in 2017.

As a result of enhancing premium assistance in 2017, a single senior earning up to $45,000 may qualify for reduced premiums.

A senior couple earning up to $51,000 may qualify for reduced

premiums. This potentially translates into a savings of up to $480 per year for a senior couple and $324 per year for a single senior.

Once the MSP changes from the 2016 budget are implemented on Jan. 1, 2017, Ashton says nearly two million British Columbians will pay no premiums.

MSP premium assistance is based on a household’s net income, adjusted for age, family size and disability status. Currently, a single senior can qualify for assistance with net income of $33,000

For the first time since it was adopted in early 2014, the Regional District of the Central Okanagan (RDCO) has opted to make some changes to the Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw.

According to RDCO communications officer Bruce Smith, the amended bylaw, which board members adopted at Monday night’s meeting, encourages and supports dog owners to be responsible by licensing them each year and controlling their dog at all times in order to reduce potential conflicts with people and other animals.

Smith says updates to the bylaw also include an increase in the number of dogs allowed per dwelling.

“Owners may now have three licensed dogs.

Previously they were restricted to a maximum of two,” Smith explained in an email on Feb. 24.

He added that a number of other jurisdictions allow more than two dogs (Fraser Valley Regional District, Capital Regional District, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary) and since the bylaw was adopted, some Central Okanagan residents have requested an increase for a variety of reasons.

Author Richard Walker explores food forestry in the north An Osoyoos man who has dedicated his life to “food forestry” by growing healthy and nutritious food and herbs is thrilled to have published a book about his life experience KEITH LACEY

“The book is a combination of being semi-autobiographical as well as a ‘how-to’ in terms of the food forestry movement,” said Walker, who was born and raised in Alberta, but has lived

in southern B.C. since 1985, including the past several years in Osoyoos.

Walker spent his early years as an organic farmer in Tofield, a small town not far from Edmonton.

He and his parents grew specialty crops and practiced animal husbandry.

In 1985, he moved to Grand Forks and over the next 20 years, transformed a degraded three-acre property into the first food forest in Canada.

through teaching engagements and workshops across Canada over the past several years.

He is passionate and informed about soil health and its link to nutritious, diverse food, human health and sound economics.

Passing on his knowledge and skill with the food forestry movement to those who strive for food stability has been one of his greatest pleasures, said Walker.

“I love sharing all of the information that I have gathered over the years with those who share the same passion about healthy and nutritious food that I do,” said Walker.

There are now a number of large and small food forests spanning diverse climactic zones in Canada as a result of his expertise and he’s proud of that legacy, said Walker.

Walker and his wife Karin have grown their own food forest on the property they own and he’s proud of being able to grow a healthy and productive forest in one of the most arid and dry climates in the country, he said.

Walker says Food Forestry North of the 49th would not have happened without the inspiration and dedication of the many food forestry students he has had the privilege of teaching over the past number of years.

“Thank you for persisting in your quest for more knowledge of this craft,” he writes in the front of his book. “Your passion and curiosity is exactly what I needed to put pen to paper.”

Longtime friend Brian Dyson, a farmer and artist, helped a great deal in the publishing of the book as he designed the cover and layout and edited the text, said Walker.

“Without you, I would still be jotting down my thoughts on lined paper,” he said.

His partner Karin also deserves a great deal of credit for her unwavering support, hard work and creative input in bringing the book from dream to reality, he said.

Walker’s book deals with everything related to food forestry, including preparing the land to grow food and herbs, design and composition of a food forest, mapping and

layoff, birds and other beneficiaries, propagation, buying tips and planting.

A separate pullout featuring the common name of all the nuts, plants and herbs he has grown over the years is also part of each book.

The book has sold well since hitting the streets a couple of weeks before Christmas, said Walker.

“I’ve sold quite a few of them at stores in Vancouver, Nelson and Trail and I’m hoping to start getting them out there in Osoyoos, Oliver and Penticton in the coming weeks.”

His original food forest in Grand Forks featured more than 400 fruit and nut trees, many which he imported from as far away as Japan, Russia and Mongolia, said Walker.

It’s possible to grow a healthy and functioning food forest on a very small parcel of land, he said.

“One of my main messages from the book is you don’t need 10 acres to grow your own food forest,” he said. “You have to work with what you have.”

Being part of the

movement to ensure food stability and growing healthy and nutritious food for large numbers of people has been a remarkable journey, said Walker.

“I still never get tired of sharing my message with children and students,” he said. “It’s amazing to see their response when you inform them about the benefits of growing your own healthy and nutritious food.”

Walker will be the special guest as the Osoyoos Desert Society continues its Winter Program Series on Saturday, Feb. 27 between 2-4 p.m. at the Watermark Beach Resort. Walker will discuss food forestry and his new book.

Kelowna area residents invited to participate in inaugural Daffodil Dash on April 24 VIEW STAFF Thanks to the residents of Kelowna and area, Canadian Cancer Society officials say they feel honored to have had 12 hugely successful years with Relay For Life in this community.

“We simply cannot thank you enough for your time, energy and generous support,” Lori Stevenson, Revenue Development Team Lead with the Canadian Cancer Society, said in a release on Feb. 24 “The Kelowna Relay should be a source of pride for you all.”

However, Stevenson continued, as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with that sentiment in mind she says the Society has launched the Daffodil Dash, a new event slated for April 24.

“Our participants and volunteers offered the consistent feedback that it was time for something fresh, innovative and fun – and we are only too happy to deliver,” she added.

The Daffodil Dash is a family friendly, timed event designed for runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. The event truly has something for everyone – 1, 5 and

10 km walk/run options, as well as a 100 metre “mini-dash” for the little ones. Post-run fun will include entertainment, face painters, and a barbecue. As with Relay For Life, this event raises vital funds for cancer research, prevention and support programs for people living with cancer and their families. The event will kick off at Stuart Park in Kelowna at 9 a.m., with the barbecue running from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funds raised through the Dash will help save lives and also help people who are living with cancer. As with the relay, the Society is asking participants to commit to raising a minimum of $150 for the cancer fighting cause, and those successful in that mission will receive a swag bag with local goodies and a commemorative pair of daffodil knee socks .

BEEPS announces winner of logo contest VIEW STAFF The members of Peachland’s Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society (BEEPS) went batty for the winning enteries of their official logo contest.

The contest, which launched in the fall, shortly after the society’s creation, invited Peachland Community Arts Council (PCAC) members amd students from Peachland Elementary School, Glenrosa Middle School and Mount Boucherie Secondary School to create a logo for the newly formed bat society.

The winning entry, created by local artist Susan Driussi, was announced during a presentation held at the conclusion of the BEEPS membership meeting at the Peachland Visitor Information Centre on Feb. 16. Driussi was awarded a cheque for $100, half of which she immediately donated back to the society.

Runners up for the logo contest included PCAC members Wayne Power and Richard Smith.

Though impressed by Smith and Power’s work, BEEPS President Darlene Hartford said Driussi’s effort was the one best suited to represent the society.

“Susan’s logo clearly illustrates what we stand for,”

“It [illustrates] what we endeavour to achieve and where we are located.”

by Edward Jones, and the first BEEPS t-shirt created with her winning logo.

The Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society is currently operated under a

board consisting of President Darlene Hartford, Vice-President Doreen Hall, Treasurer Doris Muhs, Secretary Julie Anderson, and Director at-large Patrick Van Minsel.

Their goal, according to Hartford, is to continue to use events including such as Go Batty in Peachland and the Bat Chats as a platform to raise awareness of the value bats have to the ecosystem and their desirable presence in a community.

The first BEEPS Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held Sept. 8.

OMI AND GRANDPA: Brigitte and Herbert Beckedorf

Love and Light: a spark of insight from a beloved grandmother TIFFANY BECKEDORF SPECIAL TO THE VIEW

For as long as I can remember, my grandmother Brigitte Beckedorf – or Omi, as we call her, has been a driving force in my life. Besides my mom, my Omi is a key influence in my life. She has been an incredible source of inspiration, instilling in me from a young age an eternal sense of optimism, gratitude and appreciation for both the little and the large in the human experience.

A few years ago, the idea came about to look into the possibility of getting Omi into the Guinness Book of World Records. Having had her first open heart surgery back in 1970, we knew that she had been a ‘pioneer patient’. Sure enough, after a little research, we discovered that currently, the world record for “Longest survivor of an artificial heart valve replacement, single valve” is 44 years, 76 days.

When Brigitte was 20 years old, she suffered from rheumatic fever, which led to a heart murmur, and further complications.

Then on July 1, 1980, Brigitte underwent heart surgery and had her mitral valve replaced. She has since had the prosthesis replaced twice, however we believe her to be the oldest living person with an artificial mitral valve, since she has had a prosthesis for 45 years, 7 months

and 14 days.

The twins Brigitte and Ursula Buschendorf were born on January 31, 1930 in Namibia, Africa to German parents. They returned to Germany with their mother as young children, and lived through the Second World War and the subsequent aftermath before emigrating to Canada in the 1950s, where Brigitte met and married her husband Herbert Beckedorf (who happened to be the younger brother of her twin sister’s husband Siegfried).

In September of this year, Omi and Grandpa will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

They eventually settled in Bragg Creek, Alberta to raise their three sons, living just a stone’s

throw away from my aunt and uncle. My memories from Bragg Creek are of the best kind – fresh air, wide spread forests full of wildflowers and wildlife, and a tight knit family of many aunts, uncles, cousins and so on.

In writing this, it

becomes clear very quickly that there is just no way I could fit all of the events of my Omi’s life, both happy and sad, into one short article. Perhaps this is why she herself wrote a book about her life. As a matter of fact, her book, titled Love and Light: A

Spark of Insight During My Near Death Experience, is titled after the surgery and experience for which we strive to have her acknowledged as a record holder today. It is hard to describe the immense pride and gratitude I feel when I hold that book in my

hands.

Despite a life that has seen more than its fair share of tragedy and misfortune, Brigitte has always brightened the lives of those around her with her unfailing positive thinking, her sunny disposition and her caring and gen-

erous heart. She is a true inspiration to all who know her, and as her health fades in these aging years, I would love nothing more than to see her name immortalized as a Guinness World Record holder. I know the honor would mean the world to her.

PINK WAS THE colour of the day on Feb. 24 as students across the country donned their best rose-

coloured clothes in support of Pink Shirt Day, a homegrown campaign started by two Nova Scotia teens in an effort to raise awareness on the issue of bullying and cyber-bullying. In recognition of the campaign, the Peachland Elementary School parents’ advisory council (PAC) purchased pink shirts for each student to wear and take home on Wednesday as they carried out the school-wide initiative to empower one another to take a stand against bullying.

• At least one in three adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied this year.

• Among adult Canadians, 38 per cent of males and 30 per cent of females reported having experienced occasional or frequent bullying during their school years.

• 47 per cent of Canadian parents report having a child victim of bullying.

The Peachland library is excited about a new community partnership that may help enhance children’s love for reading and reading abilities!

Lisa Jurassovich Our new partner is named Bernadette.

She is a two and a half year old St. Bernard who loves reading with children and going for long walks on the beach. She is quite a sight at 120 pounds

of all dog!

What is so special about Bernadette?

Bernadette is a therapy certified dog that has passed obedience and temperament tests.

Her handler Amy is a volunteer with Pets and People and B.A.R.K. She has done tons of volunteering in the past. Bernadette has racked up over 200 volunteer hours between the hospital and volunteering with B.A.R.K. We are lucky to have two new experienced partners at the Peachland library!

Why reading with dogs? Reading to a dog provides a non-judgmental space where children won’t feel embarrassed or ashamed to make a mistake. Being around animals is known to reduce blood pressure, heart

rate and overall anxiety.

Further, studies show that children who read with dogs versus children who do not read with dogs had greater overall enjoyment of reading in addition to improved reading abilities.

When you forget about your limitations, gains in reading can be made more easily. If your child struggles with reading or finds reading boring, this may be the program for you!

However, everyone will be welcome to sign up! If you’re a pet enthusiast or just curious stop by and give Bernadette a pat on the head!

The library will be doing a trial run of the Reading with Dogs program.

Virtuosic wunderkinds to perform in new experimental music series at Alternator VIEW STAFF Accomplished keyboardist Bjorn Kriel will be relentlessly pushing the envelope of musical conventions with his exciting trio project in Kelowna March 5.

Joined by local musicians Alex Argatoff on bass and Jason Martin on drums, the Bjorn Kriel Trio transcends jazz using free improvisation and original compositions.

The Bjorn Kriel Trio isn’t a group to sleep on. While many in the idiom venerate the great players of the 50s who carved out a particular sound, all too often the young blood is perceived as basic, clumsy, and underdeveloped.

This could not be farther from the truth for The Bjorn Kriel Trio.

The group draws deeply from the entire jazz constellation, charting a unique voice against waves of opposition.

What’s most exciting about this trio is their abandonment of clichés; they constantly push their forms to the absolute brink.

The Bjorn Kriel Trio’s approach to jazz is not so much a tight rope but a trip wire, their surefooted technique wedded with their in-

spiring new ideas position these three young men to never sound tired.

This upcoming performance is the fifth installment of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art’s Skin and Bones Music Series, a new concert series devoted to the presentation of experimental music in the Okanagan.

This will be performed outside the gallery in the beautiful South Atrium of downtown Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Admission is $8 for public and $5 for students and Alternator members.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Alternator. Non-members also have the option to purchase tickets at Milkcrate Records on Ellis Street.

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run centre located in Kelowna, B.C. at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Avenue.

The Alternator is a registered non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of the creative community. Since 1989 the Alternator has shown

the work of emerging Canadian artists, focused on innovative and non-traditional media engaged in social and cultural issues.

ARTS HEARTS FESTIVAL LITERARY WINNER

It All Started With The Bees by Carol Moltschanow Chapter 1

Jonathan was a third-generation peach grower in the Okanagan Valley.

It was the only life he had ever known.

It was the best life.

People came from miles around to buy his peaches. He had learned how to manage the orchard from his father and grandfather, doing things the old way. No pesticides.

No herbicides. Water from the creek.

Grandfather had been wise to acquire water rights.

Jonathan and Chloe lived in a compact bungalow alongside the creek.

It was positioned at the top of the south slope of the orchard that overlooked vineyards and the lake beyond. On hot summer evenings they would sit on the porch together, gaze at the view, and eat peaches.

Eating Jonathan’s peaches was a messy business.

When you bit into a fresh picked peach, juice would run down your chin and arm, clear down to the elbow where it would dribble down to the floor. When August arrived, Jonathan would wander from tree to tree until he found two of the ripest peaches. He looked for ones that were almost ready to fall to the ground.

One for him and one for Chloe.

Jonathan met Chloe in 2015 at a winery in France.

His tour group had stopped at a small vineyard just north of Bandol and he had wandered off to get away from the incessant chatter of the group. The area looked a lot like home. He took in the beautiful views of the water, small mountain ranges inland, rough terrain, and rolling vineyards edging their way down hillsides.

Lost in his thoughts, Jonathan had stumbled on some rocks at the edge of the vine-

yard. He reached out to steady himself on some boxes and realized too late that they were beehives.

As he toppled into the sticky and buzzing mess, a voice greeted him with such distain that he didn’t notice the swarming that was about to take place.

“Monsieur, vous êtes dèranger mes abeille!” she shouted. He had no clue as to what she was saying but his intuition told him that she was more offended than the bees. He apologized profusely, in English, of course.

Bees crawled through every opening of his clothes as he attempted to shed them. He wasn’t afraid of honey bees but there were only so many stings a man could take.

The woman finally took pity on him and started to pump down on the smoker to calm the bees and restack fallen sections of the hives.

“Sir, ewe air deesturbing my beeze,” she said in an accent so French that it melted his heart.

That was the moment he fell in love with Mademoiselle Chloe Ducasse and decided he would stay until his peach trees needed him. It all started with the bees.

Chapter 2

It was twenty years ago that Chloe had come to live with him in the Okanagan Valley. It had

changed so much since then. Drought and chemicals had ruined the valley.

The lush orchards and vineyards were gone now, along with the tourists. The once beautiful lake – gone too. Nothing left but cracked and desiccated earth, car bodies, broken bicycles, discarded tires, and a green slimy chemical laden stream oozing down the middle.

“It all started with the bees too,” he reminisced aloud.

Chloe had often declared that if all the bees disappeared, the world would starve in four years.

So dramatic, his Chloe. She had come running in from the hives one day in the early spring of 2017.

“Jonnasin, zay air all gun, za beez!” she cried. He was used to her accent by now but it still melted his heart whenever she spoke. He hadn’t realized the importance of her declaration at the time.

To prevent swarming in spring, Chloe usually removed the sticky frames of brood combs and started new colonies in neighbouring orchards. For some reason, the bees had swarmed and left the hives anyway. It happened sometimes. He had calmed her down and called the local beekeepers’ association only to learn that this was happening all over the

valley. Bee rescuers had been keeping vigil for days, waiting for calls to deal with the swarms.

The calls never came.

Chapter 3

All over North America, there had been little snow or rain after 2017.

Creeks and rivers had slowed to a trickle in the Okanagan. Water rationing was announced in July of the following year. Without snow pack or rain to feed creeks and rivers, there would be drought.

Year after year, orchards and vineyards in the Okanagan succumbed to the drought. Forest fires blazed out of control and thick smoke blanketed the valley for months at a time. It burned everyone’s eyes and lungs. By 2021, there was no water to fight them. By 2025, little remained of the valley. Food was scarce.

In other parts of the world, islands and coastlines had disappeared under water. Harsh lessons learned. Global warming.

Jonathan’s peach orchard was gone now except for three trees by the creek.

He felt so alone.

Gone too was his Chloe. As he stood over her dusty grave, tears streaked his face and streamed toward the grassless earth. He wiped his face with his sleeve and turned to am-

He grabbed a bucket and some orange stained cotton swabs and moved slowly, from tree to tree, using the swabs to cross-pollinate the blossoms. A lit-

tle bit of snow had fallen this past winter. The creek had a trickle of water now. He bent down and slowly filled a bucket for his trees.

“2038 is going to be a good year – there will be peaches,” he

said hopefully to his trees. Next year might be easier, he thought. Today, at Chloe’s grave, he had spotted a bee. “It all started with the bees, didn’t it Chloe?

It all started with the bees,” he said.

It is Rotary’s 111th Birthday today.

The International Youth program is one program that touches many people around the globe inside and outside the Rotary family. We celebrate our birthday by looking towards the future! I thought you might like to meet some of the Youth we have sponsored through our Youth Programme.

Last month, we had our last years’ International Exchange student, Allison, come and report back in person, on her year in Italy. What an outstanding tribute to Rotary’s International Exchange Student programme! What an incredible young lady! We were all – as the English say - “gobsmacked.” All year Allison had tantalised us with lengthy emails and her blog, recording her adventures in a “Galaxy far, far away.” At home again, missing her newfound Italian host family and still ecstatic about being able to share it all with friends and family, Allison treated us to a wonderful menu of buildings, history and food that made our awareness of just how powerful this programme for youth is. It joins young people, families and cultures in friendship across the face of this world we all call home, no matter what language we speak. Allison is back at school – well, University – studying hard to put her Rotary Year to good use as she prepares to make her mark in the world.

Listening to her, we all felt pride in what she accomplished and hope for the world as she and hundreds more like her get ready for the challenges they will face in their futures.

Thank you, Allison.

Last month we also met our RYLA candidate for this year. Rochelle will also learn much about leadership and meet many strangers from across the continent as she participates in the 2016 Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly in Penticton this May. For us it is money well spent. For her it is an opportunity to grow and to hone her skills, working cooperatively with others. We look forward to her visiting the Club to tell us all about her experience.

February is an active month for our Youth programmes: we selected some outstanding students from Mount Boucherie to participate in two Adventures Programmes. Our local Adventures in Tourism programme, organised and delivered through the Kelowna Ogopogo Club, introduces students from around the world to a week exploring the Tourism Industry in the Okanagan Valley, from Osoyoos to Kamloops. Students are billeted with Rotary families for the week and forge friendships with students around the world as well as learning about a vibrant part of BCs economy. Last years’ student told us that she hadn’t even thought that she might be able to make a career within the tourism industry, until she went on this experience.

The other, Adventures in Citizenship, is organised by the Rotary Club of Ottawa. We choose a student from Mt. Boucherie and send them for a week in Ottawa, learning about our political system, meeting MPs, attending Question Period in the Houses of Parliament - when the House is in-session - and learning about Democracy. Students also learn about each other, speaking both French and English.

Our students are our future. Our commitment in Rotary is to try to provide experiences to youth which will help them achieve their potential and become a “Gift to the World,” each in their own way. And you, the citizens of Peachland, help us through your generosity.

Misty and her fellow ambassadors venture to Vernon for first pageant DAPHNE NEYEDLI

PEACHLAND AMBASSADOR As Misty’s first pageant was approaching, the more excited Misty was feeling.

While getting ready for Vernon’s pageant, Misty felt a huge thrill as to how this would go.

She’s been imagining this day for days and how it would go down: her first pageant as an official Ambassador of Peachland.

As Misty and Belle (the other Peachland Ambassador) were getting ready, putting their dresses on, getting their make-up done and putting their hair up, Westbank’s second Vice Ambassador and Miss Congeniality Bri, and their ambassador Marie (Mara for short) came to get ready too.

While Misty was watching the candidates go through the night she anxiously waited for them to call the winners.

By the end of the pageant, when the two new girls were crowned, all the

visiting ambassadors from all over B.C. were invited to go to the next room for snacks and time to visit.

By about 11 p.m. Misty and Belle headed back to the hotel very tired and ready for bed.

On Friday morning the girls went to the mall and went shopping.

For lunch Misty, her mom, and her exchange sister went for lunch to meet up with Misty’s cousin who she hadn’t seen in forever.

In the evening they once again got ready with Bri for the dinner and dance.

The main dance to the song “Saturday Night” was a blast every visiting royalty that was there joined in.

After a very long night of dancing and singing loudly they finally returned to

the hotel.

Misty was ready to go down to the swimming pool to visit with Chase and Westbank’s ambassadors.

On the Saturday after the parade Misty was ready to go home and sleep and a very fun but exhausting weekend.

Her experience was extremely memorable and she plans on keeping those memories forever.

Author’s Note: We are still looking for candidates to participate in this year’s Ambassadors program. It is a fabulous program to participate in lots of fun. You get to make lots of new friends, and if you want/take a title you get a full year of traveling around BC and meeting people from all around BC. It’s a great way to become a better public speaker and you gain more confidence and it looks good on a resume. The meetings are at the boys and girl’s club every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.

If you want more information come to one of the meetings and maybe I’ll see you there.

There are not many programs on television that inspire me to make a point of scheduling time to watch it. That’s what Netflix and PVRs are for. However, for as long as I can remember the Oscars, which air at 4 p.m. PT on Feb. 28, have been my one exception. They are, for me, what the Superbowl is to my boyfriend – a spectacle and a celebration.

As much as I enjoy the show-stopping, gossip inducing fashion and the mindless celebrity-filled red carpet pre-show ramp-up, for me, it’s all about the movies.

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t measure the quality of a film, a writer, an actor or even a director for that matter, based on whether or not they garner an Oscar nod, and, I will be the first to admit, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as an institution, is intrinsically flawed – in a big way.

It’s political, often sexist and frequently racist (see this year’s #Oscarssowhite campaign). And the academy has made some questionable choices: honouring actor Jack Palance with a best supporting actor win in 1991 for his comedic turn as “Curly” in the Billy Crystal vehicle City Slickers; overlooking actress Jessica Chastain and director Kathryn Bigelow for their work in Zero Dark Thirty and most notably snubbing

Selma director Ava DuVernay and actor David Oyelowo at the 2015 Oscars without so much as a nomination.

The Oscars aren’t perfect. What they do accomplish, more often than not, is to bring attention to some great films – even if they don’t give them a nomination or a win. I expect this year will be no different. Of the nominees for 2016, I will be paying particular attention to the Best Picture category.

The eight films nominated include The Big Short, The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Room, Mad Max; Fury Road, Spotlight and The Revenant.

I will also be interested to see what shakes out on the best supporting actress category, because whether she gets the win or not, I think Jennifer Jason Leigh should get some kind of trophy for suffering the inherent racist and misogynist undertones that generously pepper most of Quentin Tarantino’s movies (she is nominated for her role in The Hateful Eight). I also just think she is a great actress.

Although my money, for what it’s worth, is on Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl or Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs.

But back to the best picture contenders.

I will admit, I can’t weigh in on all of the nominees – I have only seen Fury Road, The Revenant and Spotlight.

Fury Road is anoth-

er chapter in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy. And though it an was awesome action movie, and it stars two of my favourite actors, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, it is, essentially, without depth and it is about a bunch of people racing through the desert wasteland whilst trying to kill one another, in the most brutal way possible. So for me, it doesn’t rank as a “best picture.”

The Revenant, which is based on the book by Michael Punke, tells the story of the American frontiersman Hugh Glass, who, while exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack, depicted with frightening realism, I might add.

After much deliberation by his hunting team Glass is left for dead and must utilize his survival skills to find a way back to civilization, and seek revenge on those who abandoned him.

The word revenant, I learned, comes from the French revenir, which means “to return.”

The acting in this film was incredible. We’ve known for some time that Leonardo is a capable actor, but even my boyfriend, who can’t stand Tom Hardy, admitted that the British babe known mostly for his roles in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, killed it in The Revenant. The first few minutes after the movie ended is the one time you

will hear me say that I would not want to be left alone in the woods with Mr. Hardy.

His portrayal of John Fitzgerald was unsettling, cringe-inducing and downright award worthy (Hardy is a nominee in this year’s best supporting actor category.)

One of the reasons I wanted to see The Revenant in the first place is, and brace yourself because my inner film major is really showing here, is the cinematography.

You wouldn’t think there would be too many challenges left for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to conquer; he won his first Academy Award in 2014 for helping to create the illusion of Sandra Bullock’s journey through space in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity.

He returned to accept his second consecutive Oscar win last year for his work on Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman, a darkly quirky film that appeared to be shot in a single take.

For The Revenant he teamed up with Inarritu again – this time he shot in freezing conditions, and used only natural light.

Based on everything I’ve read, the shoot was absolutely grueling. But it paid off. Visually, it’s stunning.

The film, which was shot mainly in Alberta and Northern B.C. reminded me how breathtaking this country really is. Honestly, I was in awe.

The last of the

three nominated films I hope receive some form of recognition on Sunday is Spotlight.

The film, which earned Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams best supporting actor and actress nods, respectively, follows The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Spotlight investigative team as it uncovers systemic child sex abuse committed by Catholic priests and covered up by the Catholic Church in the Boston area.

On the strong recommendation of my mother, my boyfriend, who is also a journalist, and I saw the film in January For me Spotlight accomplished two things; first, it made me angry.

It is, after all, a not altogether uncommon tale of abusers and their victims.

And it is a story still being told.

When the film reaches its conclusion, and the story is committed

to newsprint and the edition containing that groundbreaking scoop is bundled and into the trucks waiting to carry it to newsstands, the screen goes black for a moment.

That’s when the list of cities where priests were later caught, flashes on the screen; I cried. I come from one of those cities and attended school in one of those parishes.

I had no idea what had been going on for years, right under so many of our noses.

And it made me furious that anyone, especially an institution like the Catholic Church, could so abuse power.

That screen, for me, was one of the most powerful moments in the movie. The other moment was the final scene.

The newspapers hit the street and the reporters aren’t celebrating.

They simply arrive at work the next day and trudge down into their basement offic-

es to prepare for the next Spotlight – only this time something is different. The phones are ringing off the hook with people wanting the Spotlight team to tell their story.

This movie couldn’t have come at a better time. We are in an age when journalism has become an amateur sport practised by anyone with an opinion and an internet connection, regardless of writing skill or knowledge of the subject, regardless of standards and ethics and fact-checking and fairness.

Those of us who believe in newspapers and the value they hold in a democratic society, pray that someone will solve the monetization mystery so people like me can continue to strive for what reporters like those on the Spotlight team were able to achieve.

On Feb. 28 I will definetely be rooting for Spotlight – even though it doesn’t include Tom Hardy.
