Okanagan mayors issue challenge to “Make Water Work” this summer Now that hot summer temperatures are upon us, the mayors and councillors of the Okanagan valley are asking residents to take the pledge to “Make Water Work.” Make Water Work (www.MakeWaterWork.ca) is an effort by the Okanagan Basin Water Board’s (OBWB) Okanagan WaterWise program, and local government and water utility partners throughout the valley, to encourage outdoor water conservation during our hot Okanagan summers, when most water is used. Several valley mayors and councillors gathered Wednesday morning to take the pledge, invite residents to learn more about the water of the region and take the pledge. “We’re having fun with this contest but the message behind it is serious,” noted OBWB chair and West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater, noting some of the stats behind water use in the Okanagan. • The average Canadian uses 329 litres of water each day. In the Okanagan, the average is a whopping 675 litres when averaged out over the year. The summer average in the Okanagan climbs to almost 1000 litres;

• 24 per cent of all Okanagan water is used by residents outside – mostly on lawns and gardens; and • There is less water available per person in the valley than anywhere else in Canada. “Some residents use less water, especially if they’re on a meter, but we still are using more than what is sustainable. It’s for this reason we launched Make Water Work – to show that there are simple ways to save water and make it work more efMake Water Work provides residents with tips to get the most from their water, such as watering between dusk and dawn to prevent evaporation, and putting where it’s needed – on plants, not pavement. Many are simple tips that can make a huge difference, saving water for the things that matter to us most as residents Residents who take the pledge are entered for a chance to win $5,000 in WaterWise yard upgrades. This year’s contest partners are KelownaGardens. com, Bylands and ProSource Irrigation.

problem.” “I don’t really have a problem with it,” Councillor Terry Condon said. “Gorman’s is an established business that has worked well with the town. Inherently, my sense is this will work but I would really like to know a little more in depth about their plans.” Coun. Condon also expressed concerns about how increased dust might impact

Peachland Collision, a McDougald Road auto body business that also paints cars. “I think it will be particularly detrimental to that particular business,” Condon said. “Given that that is his livelihood, we’re going to have to provide some kind of assistance or some kind of dust mitigation program because it is not good up there at all.” Gorman Bros.

logging and roads supervisor Chris King attended Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting, where he assured council he would meet with the owner of Peachland Collision to ensure any concerns could be addressed. “I support this 100 per cent,” Councillor Peter Schierbeck said. “I have a concern also with the dust and the painting of automobiles in that area but I know that there are all kinds of materials that can be put down to mitigate this and I’m sure that can be done reasonably economically…Gorman’s has been a great company for the district to work with. Many of our residents are employed there so I’d like to see this go ahead.” Councillor Moberg also supported the plan

dence that materials to mitigate the dust could address any concerns. “When you deal with outside parties, what’s important is the trust factor and Gorman Bros. have a reputation for the right thing and being an important part of the community so I’m very happy to work with them,” Councillor Eric Hall said. King said in the past they have successfully used magnesium chloride on the road to help mitigate dust. The Gorman Bros. representative said the company would also require their drivers to drive no more than 20 km per hour over the stretch of McDougald Road that poses most concern. The resolution passed by council supports the update to the Gorman Bros. forest stewardship plan, provided that: • Best management practices and recommendations to protect source water are followed; • Maintenance issues on McDougald Road are completed to the satisfaction of the director of operations; and • Restrictions on (Monday - Friday 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.) on Princeton Avenue and load limits (no more than 10 trucks per company per day on Princeton Avenue) are adhered to.

Yellow Schoolhouse exhibition is only the beginning for art gallery project Continued from page 1

“How do Peachland residents experience their place? Can we imagine possibilities for development and growth in the community? The Yellow Schoolhouse show is a chance for people to explore and imagine this place and to share these ideas with others,” Holmes said. Next Friday UBCO researchers and artists will open the monthlong interactive space, where work from local artists will be displayed along with various activities that gallery visitors can enjoy, including a series of take home or do-it-on-site projects. “People will have great fun at this show,” Holmes says. “We have projects where kids can or maps, bulletin boards and writing walls for people to comment on a series of questions about this place, seed packets with instructions in them for people to take home and do as a family or in groups. Seniors and kids organizations can come in and participate.” Holmes says all the work created will be documented and preserved so there will be a record of what people have thought about Peachland in the

summer of 2014. Also on display will paintings, poems, and sound recordings that were created in a series of workshops inspired by local PCAC members in conversation with Holmes and assistant professor Denise Kenney. “We have a research project at UBCO called the Eco Art Incubator and one of our main areas that we work in is trying to understand how people are connected to their places, because we think if you’re connected to the place you live, you’re far more likely to care about what happens to it, whether it is socially or environmentally or whatever,” Holmes said in an interview with The View. “We’re artists so we create art out of that concern, out

of that problem.” Holmes says part of the purpose of the project is also to explore Okanagan aesthetics, and a high level of local community engagement with the idea led the researchers to select Peachland as a location in which to conduct some of their research. “We ended up talking to people in various communities about

possible projects that we might do that would try to garner people’s impressions about what an Okanagan aesthetic might be. We ended up choosing Peachland as a sort of trial balloon project because everybody was so keen. We had the Peachland Community Arts Council on board, we went to a meeting and the mayor was there, and there

In order to move forward with locating the Peachland Community Arts Council new art gallery in the Mary Smith Hall, the donor wall thanking our generous sponsors will need to be moved. To ensure our ongoing recognition, we will be temporarily displaying a large framed reproduction of the donor wall prominently in the Peachland Historic Primary School. In 2015, we plan to have a beautiful permanent plaque installed with all the names of our generous donors. Those donors who sponsored the doors project will continue to have their door plaques in place as well, and will also be receiving a commemorative ‘doors tribute’ book later this year. We thank you for your patience and understanding. We could not have done this project without your generous support.

come to it and continue the conversation. There will be all kinds of interactive things to do in the gallery where you can respond to questions about what you think the future of Peachland should be, what you think you should preserve or how you see Peachland,” Holmes said. “We’ll be documenting and re-

cording everything and what we’ll be doing is putting it together in some way.” The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, July 18 from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The exhibition will run until August 11. Both the opening and exhibition will be open to the public and free of charge.

is a lot of discussion about development and new development on that hillside because it is so visible.” The UBCO researchers then invited the PCAC to submit some proposals for some workshops in Peachland. The end product of those workshops will be incorporated into the upcoming exhibition. Holmes says the researchers look forward to the exhibition being held at the new gallery space in the Historic Primary School building. “We’re delighted to be the number one thing in there,” Holmes said. Holmes went on to say that the project won’t end with the Yellow Schoolhouse exhibition. “One of the reasons to have this gallery show on for three weeks is we’re inviting everyone in Peachland to

To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
