Charrie Fichter had no good reason to pull over and ap-

proach the stranger sitting at the picnic table next to her daughter Ashlee Hyatt’s memorial bench overlooking Okanagan Lake in Peachland last week.

She described what compelled her to say hello as a vague force, and told the Peachland View on June 2 – Ashlee’s sixth “angelversary,” marking the day in 2010 when at 16 she

lost her life a few blocks up the road from where the bench now stands – that she could not be any happier that she did.

It turns out the man was the first officer on the scene that

night, then a rookie cop in his mid-20s in his first year on the force. Ashlee died in his arms.

No happy trail for accused Peachland trailer bandit A Peachland man faces charges after he was pulled over in a truck hauling a recently stolen U-Haul trailer.

The clock hadn’t passed 8 a.m. yet when West Kelowna RCMP were alerted to the theft of a trailer from the 3800 block of Glen Canyon Drive.

It didn’t get far.

The complainant called police back within minutes of reporting the theft to report she had spotted the trailer hitched to a Ford minivan on Gellatly Road

heading north for the highway. An officer intercepted the red 2003 Windstar on Highway 97 near Desert Pines Avenue. A 37-year-old Peachland man and a 33-year-old woman of no fixed address were arrested without incident and face potential charges including possession of property obtained by crime and theft over $5,000. He was released on recognizance and will appear in court on June 14, she was held on unrelated warrants.

The charges have not been proven in

court.

The value of the contents of the still-intact trailer, which included furniture as the complainant was in the process of moving, was estimated to be about $3,000.

Kelowna RCMP wants to give you a big old bag of cash.

The money was found on a public transit bus on the UBCO campus-West

Kelowna route. The “honest passengers” as police described them got off the bus in downtown Kelowna to turn the money over to police.

To claim the cash, you will have to provide the exact total of the cash found, including its denominations, as well as the unique markings on the envelope itself, to police.

If you can prove you are the rightful owner you are asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

Thousands of Peachlanders will live out their days without facing a shadow of the challenges before eight-year-old Jak Reimer and his family.

The George Pringle Elementary School student has been diagnosed with a rare chronic condition that will require daily hormone replacement therapy for the rest of his life, as well as a cancerous tumour in

his spleen.

Last Sunday, June 5, friends and family gathered at The 19 restaurant in West Kelowna, recently recognized as one of Canada’s top 100 eateries, and raised more than $8,500 to help

the Peachland family pay for medication, travel and accommodations as well as lost wages while Jak awaits and ultimately undergoes treatment at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Doctors also found the spleen tumour, but consider both that organ and Jak’s brain too fragile at the mo-

ment for biopsies, so his health is continuously monitored through regular MRI brain scans, skeletal surveys, X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood work.

He has to travel to the hospital in Vancouver every few weeks.

More than 250 people milled through an open house held June 1 by Highway 97 InPlace, a group formed to speak out against the construction of a new highway bypass in Peachland.

One of them was retired Alberta oilsands worker Brian Doerksen, who owns the “last house before Merritt” and believes he would live three doors down from the bypass if it were built.

“It’s way too expensive,” he said. “By the time the government would anywhere near make up its mind to spend that money, we could spend way less (to improve the existing highway).

We’d be going like everybody else, just like Westbank, just like Kelowna, just like Summerland, just like

Penticton. We are not special.”

He fears for the safety of the drivers who would have to brave grades reportedly between six and eight per cent on the road leading to the Coquihalla Highway.

“I look at the fog all winter,” he said. “I’m in it. I cannot believe we’re going to force people to drive into that when they can come this way. Who is going to use that road, after that kind of money has been spent?”

People who live along the highway bought knowingly [and] people who wanted quiet bought up high where it’s quiet. So there’s no way you can put a

highway above Peachland that wouldn’t affect the quiet of some residents.”

She admitted to being a not-in-mybackyard (NIMBY) person, but was quick to note she believes many of the bypass supporters are as well. She said 133 people had added their names to a petition against the new bypass, bringing their total to about 500 in a few short weeks.

reasons is the Deep Creek crossing over our Peachland watershed, so not only would you punch a road the size of the Coquihalla right through Peachland, you have to span it with a bridge that would almost be a kilometre long [and] would cost up to $100 million,” she said. “So provincially, taxpayers shouldn’t want a bypass. Editor’s note: this letter was submitted in response to Pete Wenham’s letter published in the Peachland View on May 27 under the headline “The bypass debate.” It was also posted as a comment by the author to Wenham’s letter online.

Sure you say that I am only promoting “no bypass” because I don’t want a bypass highway in my back yard – you are absolutely correct!

I do not have a hidden agenda – never have. Those who know me – know I say “exactly” what I want to.

Yes you are right! I do not want a bypass around Peachland! I do not want my surroundings scarred with concrete. I do not want the noise, the pollution or the cost. I want my kids to hike in the areas around here and see what our countryside is supposed to look like.

I do not want to see the select few businesses in town suffer and possibly close. I do not want to see people lose their jobs. I do want to see jobs created so more people can work locally in our community.

A bypass will not create jobs in Peachland – it will divert traffic away from Peachland.

No people, no demand for services, no jobs!

So – yes – that is my “hidden” agenda: save the forest, save the wildlife, save the land, save the views of our beautiful community, save the jobs, save the businesses, save the money by widening the road already in place.

Ask yourself some serious questions and do some research on the wildlife in the area – what do you want to leave for future generations?

Other points that may also interest you were brought up at Wednesday’s open house: If there was a bypass, what would happen to Peachland and area if someone decided to throw their cigarette out their window along that said bypass?

A highway does not stop forest fires – it is not a barrier! If anything, you will be putting humans in an area that for the most part is untouched.

What if a truck was coming down Princeton Avenue and lost control?

We all cannot deny that Princeton Avenue will become a major artery for this bypass.

The taxpayers of Peachland are responsible for the maintenance of this road (with a bypass – we will also be responsible for the old Highway 97). We have no businesses or industry in Peachland – what kind of taxes will we be paying?

Oyama pays over $100,000 per year for six kilometres of their old highway.

We would have 19 km of old highway if this bypass becomes reality.

Over $300,000 a year for 5,000 residents – you do the math!

Add a truck losing its brakes on Princeton, spilling their load – our community cleans up – more tax dollars spent.

This bypass makes absolutely no sense!

Lost rare and endangered habitat, losses on every environmental aspect there is, tax dollars wasted, parks, nature trails and the beauty of Peachland gone … the list is ongoing. These are all cons in my opinion.

I had a gentleman state to me last night at the In-Place Open House that making a lot of people in Peachland happy matters (he believes that there are more people in favour of the bypass than widening – thus the statement of “a lot”) and if businesses close, then so be it.

Sacrificing the happiness of a few is worth it.

Obviously, he is pro-bypass and lives on Beach Avenue.

It is all about the noise for him. That is it.

When he was asked, he responded that he didn’t care about the wildlife at risk, the potential jobs lost and businesses shutting down, the higher taxes – none of it.

It was all about him and his home being too close to a highway.

He, of course, understood that I was also standing up for my home, but he didn’t understand that my home is the entire area surrounding Peachland, not just the roof over my family’s heads.

Three Lessons, or A Modern Tale of Misdirection and Blindness Dear editor: Little Cindy had a highway. It was 50 or more years old and it had become a big part of her life.

Broken up, of poor design and not really wide enough, or straight enough for the 21st century, she held on to it like life itself. She called it her “little country road” and used it every day.

Others used it as well. Close friends, business friends, neighbours and even folks from far away flocked to Cindy’s place just to use her rickety old highway.

Many died of course and many more were injured, but they kept coming and Cindy held on and said words over the bodies or muttered under her breath about the noise those darn ambulances made as they carried off the bloodied and the maimed. She even paid her own employees to clean up the mess these “accidents” left behind.

“What to do?” she cried when asked. “I love my old highway. It’s a part of my family even if it’s horribly unsafe – even if it is obsolete.”

And then, almost like magic, a small man, a silly man,

dressed as a wise and worldly man, came to Cindy’s door. “Cindy dear,” he said, “I can make your life the joy you have never known. I will give you a big, new, expensive highway and you can keep it right next to your old highway. What’s more, I’ll get all those unknown neighbours, from far away, to pay for it.”

“Best of all,” he said, “you can give the shiny new highway to those neighbours and keep the old one, the broken one, just for your family and your closest friends.

Oh, it’s true; the broken one will still be broken. It will still be very dangerous. It will still be unable to support modern, well-designed cars but it will be all yours – and you, and your closest friends, can pay for its upkeep forever – all of it. Every foot, every season, every ditch, every bridge and all the supporting structure that’s worn or missing entirely. It will be truly, truly yours and you can give it a wonderful name.”

Well, Little Cindy was struck dumb. “Yes,” she said.

“Yes! I never told anyone I would do this before you came along but I can see your point now. It’s all become very clear. I can have both. My neighbours will pay for

the new highway and my family and friends will pay for the broken one – over and over and over again. Wow! And so it was that in the end the big, new expensive highway was never really used. At least not by anyone Cindy actually knew, and the lovely rickety highway remained.

It still killed and injured people of course, but they were all her friends. And yes, all of her young, productive friends moved away and took all of their future generations with them. Those that were left to pay for her old highway were the old, cranky, unproductive ones, who walked their little dogs on main street and cursed her for making them pay for an old highway even they could never use.

Lesson 3: Don’t be distracted by that big, new idea when simply fixing the small one will do.

Lesson 2: Don’t be sucked into something promoted by a few people who, laid bare, are focused not on you but solely on their own self-interest, and Lesson 1. Follow the money.

New subdivisions not in Peachland’s best interest It’s been 12 years since New Town Planning made their promises of jobs and a golf course and six years since New Monaco put its toe in our water to see if we would go along with their plan to change our town with a subdivision of 2,600-2,800 housing units on the orchard on Drought Hill.

I have searched for the data about the impact that building new residential

subdivisions have on taxes. As far as I can see adding subdivisions wouldn’t mean tax reductions or even slowing tax increases because population expansion brings increased costs.

Residential taxpayers who pay 95 per cent of the taxes here are capitalizing these land developers by paying planning staff salaries, and we are paying levies to build a capital funds for the

water, sewer and fire services infrastructure that make these land developer plans possible.

These developers are not paying into these funds.

Until we see hard data about the water supply, property values, promised jobs and tax rate benefits, I suggest we put the subdivision planning on hold.

A PATCH OF sand where the green used to be is all that’s left of the Ponderosa golf course, ripped up to, ostensibly,

make room for a new subdivision that has not come to be.

Dear editor: Is this community planning process real or is it just a rubber stamp step? Unless we address the water shortages and property value depreciation of the plans to add 12,600 new people and 5,600 new homes to our community than I think its fair to call this a rubber stamping step.

Land developers’ plans to build 5,600 new homes for 12,600 people likely won’t be up for debate, but I argue they should be because they are not in residents’ best interests.

We are already facing water shortages every summer and the law of supply and demand tells us that adding hundreds of new housing units every year to the local supply is bound to reduce the selling price

of current residents’ homes.

The 2012 report from Harma, Johnson and Cohen (Harma, K. J., M. S. Johnson, and S. J. Cohen. 2012. Future water supply and demand in the Okanagan Basin, British Columbia: A scenario-based analysis of multiple, interacting stressors. Water Resources Management 26(3): 667–689.) on the future water supply and demand in Peachland says we won’t have enough water to meet our needs by 2020 – four years from now.

That report confirms the analysis done

by Golder Associates Peachland residents paid for in 2006. Both of those reports were based on the plan to grow Peachland’s population by 60 per cent, not 300.

The Economic Im-

pact Analysis Of Major Developments In Peachland Final Report from Vann Struth Consulting Group Inc. was not an unbiased study of the impacts current residents will experience as a result of the New Monaco and Ponderosa developments.

The bias is implicit in their assumptions.

The analysis assumes taxes will go down if there are more taxpayers sharing the burden of fixed costs like new municipal buildings and water storage and treatment systems.

That is an unproven theory, not evidence-based fact.

I suggest the existing residents, who are already paying tax levies to build a capital fund for the water system, can manage the need for new water storage and

treatment without adding the demand of 12,600 more people to our limited supply.

I also suggest we don’t build new staff buildings. Let’s use the buildings we have already paid for, namely the Peachland Historic Primary School beside the Community Centre. Let’s find ways to use what we have.

I don’t want the market value of my home depreciated by the addition of 300500 new homes every year for the next 10-15 years. I don’t want the supply of water to my home reduced by the demands for water to those new homes.

I don’t think land developers’ promises of hundreds (or was that thousands?) of jobs, much less well paying jobs, have panned out so far.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure invites the public to provide input on the preliminary findings of a review of the existing conditions and performance of the Highway 97 corridor through Peachland.

The ministry’s Highway 97 - Peachland Transportation Study team will use the information and input to help identify and assess possible short, medium and long-term solutions to address future transportation needs through or around Peachland.

Ministry staff will be available to provide information and answer questions.

Please note that this study is in the research and data collection stage. The study team has not identified or evaluated any specific improvement options yet. This next step will occur later this year with the assistance of ongoing public engagement.

Fichter said he told her he had driven four hours the day previous to be at Ashlee’s bench, and was heading back that evening.

She has no doubt that meeting was meant to happen and as if the moment could not have become more powerful, the officer was finally able to tell her that what became Ashlee’s angelversary was his birthday.

“They’re forever

connected.”

Ashlee died at the age of 16 after she was stabbed during a fight outside a Peachland house party in 2010.

An 18-year-old West Kelowna woman was convicted of manslaughter in 2013.

Ashlee’s friends are now adults and many have young children of their own. They brought them along to the gathering that by 6 p.m. had swelled to about 20 people.

Pointing to one of the young women holding a toddler, Fichter said her daughter Jamie Lee was named partially after Ashlee.

MESSAGES OF LOVE and remembrance were left on balloons and a bristol board card at Ashlee’s bench overlooking Lake Okanagan last Thursday.

“Her mom’s name is Ashley too, so she couldn’t have ‘Ash-

ley Ashlee,’” Fichter laughed. “So Lee is her middle name.

They were best friends.”

Fichter said time has made some aspects of living with the too-soon loss of her daughter easier and others more difficult.

“We were just talking about that,” she told the View. “It’s so emotional how I keep it in today, it’s just that I have to remember that this is happy, even when I’m having sad moments. I get to see her friends bring their kids. These guys were all 17 years old when she died and to see them now as grown women be-

ing mommies, it’s pretty awesome. Just look at them! We’ve got other generations coming in celebrating someone they’ll never know.

“I don’t have as many nightmares and stuff [anymore], but it’s hard when I look at how old they are and look at my other daughter who was only 11 and watching her grow up, and trying to picture Ashlee and where she would be. Would I be a grandma? Would she still be hanging around with all of the same kids?”

Thursday’s gathering, complete with

balloons, flowers, angel and heart confetti and a barbecue, was meant to be a celebration.

“Because I cremated Ashlee she’s at home and people wanted a place to come and remember her, so that was the intent of the bench,” she explained. “And today, instead of remembering how she was murdered, we get together to celebrate everything about her – telling funny stories, or the girls telling their kids about her when they arrive. ABERDEEN PUBLISHING The tree fruit industry in the South Okanagan is in better shape than it has been in more than 30 years and the future looks even brighter after the provincial government committed an additional $1 million to its provincial replant program last week.

The provincial government has now committed $9.4 million in funding that will allow tree fruit growers across the province – the vast majority who live and work in the Okanagan Valley – through its tree fruit replant program.

Funding for the program was announced in 2014 and started up last year and will continue until 2020-21.

“The B.C. government’s popular seven-year tree fruit replant program will now assist even more growers with an additional $1 million in funding over the duration of the program,” Bounda r y-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson announced last Thursday, during a press conference held outside the Osoyoos Visitor’s Centre.

president of the B.C. Fruit Growers Association, was on hand and smiling following the funding announcement.

Several local orchardists from Osoyoos and Oliver were also on hand for the announcement.

The announcement was made in the South Okanagan because this is where the majority of B.C.’s tree fruit growers call home, said Larson.

“The new funding is another step in the B.C. government’s commitment to support B.C.’s tree fruit growers, who have made the decision to replant their orchards with high-value, high-quality fruit varieties that are enjoyed by consumers locally and around the world,” she said.

For the 2016-17 season, it is estimated that $300,000 of the new funding will be made available and this will assist more than two dozen additional projects, with 122 additional acres being replanted in total, said Ashton.

The provincial tree fruit replant program is committing $9.4 million that will see at least 1,600 acres replanted by 2021, he said.

This will provide more than 2,400 jobs each year in the Okanagan Valley.

The application intake process for the

2016-17 season was so successful that it was significantly oversubscribed and has now closed, he said.

The new funding applications for the 2017-18 growing season will be made available on the Ministry of Agriculture website this fall.

“Increasing production, driving competitiveness and building markets are three key priorities of the B.C. Agrifood ans Seafood Strategic Growth Plan that has an overall goal of growing the B.C. agrifood sector to a $15 billion a year industry by 2020,” said Larson.

“Given the high interest in the replant program, the B.C. government wanted to ensure there was adequate funding to meet the demand,” she said.

“I want to congratulate the Okanagan tree fruit sector on receiving the new funding and I wish them continued success as they reposition their orchards to high-value and high-quality fruit.”

Ashton said the replant program is an example of a program that is so successful, the provincial government saw the value in contributing more funding over an extended period of time.

“We heard loud and clear from growers that the replant program is a huge success for replanting low-val-

ue orchards with high-demand varieties like Ambrosia and Honeycrisp apples and late-season cherries,” he said. “This funding commitment will provide even more farming families with the chance to earn a higher income as they continue to support their local community.”

Steele said the funding is a huge commitment by the provincial government to the tree fruit industry across the province and especially here in the Okanagan Valley.

“The replant program is critical to the renewed growth of our industry, especially for cherry and apple production and the popularity of the program has caught everyone by surprise,” said Steele.

“The new funding announcement will help accelerate renewal and this is very positive news for growers.”

The tree fruit industry in the South Okanagan is now producing more high-quality and high-value fruit than it has at any time in the past 30 years, said Steele.

The $300,000 in additional funding for this year was need as several growers are ready and willing to replant their orchards, he said.

“The additional funding for future

years is a huge vote of confidence in our industry,” he said.

“We are truly thankful for the support of our MLAs. This announcement is proof that we share a vision or growth and positive outlook for the tree fruit sector.

“I would like to take a moment to reflect on why we have this support. It did not happen overnight. Our industry has known and worked with our MLAs, before they become MLAs. Each and every one of them has known that the BCFGA and learned about the industry in their former lives, as municipal politicians.

“Our current MLAs, then they were starting out as municipal representatives, engaged with our industry. They listened intently to our annual industry update to city councils and asked us questions, often tough questions about the future of our industry.”

These political leaders have come to learn about the struggle and joy involved in producing good, healthy apples, cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines and apricots, he said.

“By working together and by being positive about our sector, by being a team, we can succeed,” said Steele. “By working together, by having a common vision, we are

seeing strong growth in the cherry sector, with B.C. cherries being exported around the world. We are seeing enormous growth and positive returns by our locally discovered Ambrosia apple.

There is much more potential, yet there will be hurdles for the industry to clear, but with the confidence that this new replant funding generates, our sector can go forward together and meet new challenges and conquer new markets.”

Brenda Jorde, member services co-ordinator and program administrator for the replant program with the BCFGA, said inspectors will closely monitor orchardists who receive funding to ensure they are following a strict protocol for tearing down old fruit trees and replanting new ones.

B.C. growers produced Canada’s second largest tree fruit crop in 2014, including more than 126,000 tonnes of apples, sweet cherries, peaches, pears, plums, prunes, nectarines and apricots.

There are nearly 6,000 tree fruit orchards in B.C., with the majority in the Okanagan Valley.

Apples account for the majority of land in tree fruits with 62 per cent, followed by sweet cherries at 22 per cent.

ABERDEEN PUBLISHING Town of Oliver Fire Chief Dan Skaros was beaming with a broad smile as his department did another fantastic job in hosting the British Columbia Volunteer Firefighters ShutUp and Train Spring Training Seminar a couple of weeks ago.

More than 350 volunteer firefighters from across the province – including volunteers with the Peachland Fire Department – gathered at the Oliver Community Park to participate in the annual event.

For more than 30 years, the Town of Oliver Volunteer Fire Department has hosted the annual event pretty much every second year – volunteer fire departments from across the province make bids to host the event on the years it isn’t held in Oliver.

The event is all about sharing information on the latest techniques used to fight fire and allow volunteer firefighters to test and show off their skills in simulated training sessions spread out over two days, said Skaros.

“It’s a real honour for the volunteers with our department to be able to host this

event every second year,” said Skaros, who has been the fire chief in Oliver for seven years and been a volunteer firefighter for more than 32 years. “It takes a lot of time and effort to organize this event, but our members don’t mind putting in all the hard work because we always run a successful event and the volunteers from all over the province are always happy to be coming back to Oliver.”

The dozens of volunteer firefighters who participate in the spring training sessions move from one training apparatus to the other all day Saturday and return Sunday morning before things wrap up Sunday afternoon.

such common firefighting terms and methods such as stabilization maze, initial attack, ghost maze, forcible entry, forestry high pressure unit, guerrilla knots, pyro safety, foam pit, confined spaces training, RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, vehicle fires, swift water rescue, ladder rescue bailouts and environmental spills.

Experienced professional firefighters and volunteers are brought in from across the province to lead the training sessions.

Volunteers from Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton, Naramata, Summerland, Peachland, West Kelowna and Kelowna all participated in the weekend training sessions.

The spring training

sessions started close to 35 years ago when the Town of Oliver department volunteered to host the event and that inaugural event was so successful, that the town’s fire department has hosted every second year ever since, said Skaros.

“There have been a couple of times when no one else stepped forward and we did it a couple of years in a row, but for the most part it has been every second year since we first started 34 years ago,” he said.

The amount of support for this event is incredible, said Skaros.

charge for many years as major corporate sponsors of the event and FortisBC has also been a loyal corporate sponsor, he said.

“The amount of community support we get from the big forest companies and the local business community here in Oliver is just incredible,” said Skaros. “All of the businesses really want to be part of this event.”

The spring training sessions are all about sharing information, acquiring knowledge and showcasing the skills of hard-working volunteer firefighters, said Skaros.

“It’s not about showing off, but more about showing how important training and teamwork are in this business,” he said. “The key to success with any volunteer fire department is working together as a team.

The 26 current members with the Oliver fire department sold dozens of Hold The Line T-shirts this past weekend and helped raise more than $10,000 that will be donated to help citizens in Rock Creek and Midway who lost their homes during last summer’s wildfires, said Skaros.

We still have many activities underway, leading into summer holiday time.

In May a sold-out crowd of 180 people enjoyed the Greater Victoria Police Chorus. All of the 50+ Activity Centre proceeds from this event were sent via the Salvation Army to support the people of Fort McMurray.

On May 26, magician Scott MacKinnon entertained those attending the monthly Potluck dinner to lots of “oohs” and “aahs.”

June’s monthly Potluck dinner is on Friday, June 24 at 6 p.m.

This event will be a barbeque with hot dogs and hamburgers supplied at $3 for members and $5 for non-members. Everyone is asked to bring a salad or dessert item along with dishes and cutlery.

Following supper at 7 p.m. the Mount Boucherie Secondary Senior Jazz Band will entertain us.

Peachland resident Marty Edwards is an international entertainer who over the past 22 years has spent many weeks each year performing across eight countries through four continents. Copley has been painting for as long as she can remember. She started working with the unforgiving, expensive and, frankly, somewhat hazardous medium of stained glass about 20 years ago.

She and her husband spent several years scavenging from derelict houses about to be torn down; they salvaged doors and window frames along the way and now have a stockpile of material to choose from.

“I design the piece to go with the

West Kelowna Mounties hunt possible predator CONTRIBUTED Police are issuing an advisory, out of an abundance of caution, after a West Kelowna youth reported a suspicious set of circumstances Tuesday morning in Glenrosa.

On June 7 at 12:51 p.m., the West Kelowna RCMP received a report of a suspicious circumstance where a youth reportedly was approached by a driver and offered a ride to school. The encounter occurred near the intersection of Gorman Road and Ficke Road at approxi-

mately 8:29 a.m. The youth later reported the incident to school officials who contacted the RCMP. Police have been told that the man stopped his vehicle next to the youth and asked the youth more than once if she wanted a ride to school, to which she responded no. The driver eventually reached across and slightly cracked open the passenger side door and advised the youth that she could hop in if she wanted to.

“The youth did the absolute right thing when she told the man ‘no’ and fled the

area on foot,” says Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The vehicle was not seen again and believed to have departed the area down Gorman Road towards Webber Road.”

The driver was described to police as: • Caucasian male; • Approximately 45-55 year old; • White hair; • White mustache.

The suspicious vehicle was described to police as: • Black four-door pick-up truck; • Either a Ford or Chevrolet; • With tinted back windows;

• Loud exhaust.

Investigators would like to speak with the driver of the vehicle.

spared a jury (evaluation) process. Web Weaver was chosen from some 900 pieces.

Quilling, or paper filigree, is ancient. It has its origins in the 13th century, when nuns used feathers to help shape paper and copy the patterns in wrought iron pieces.

Today, artists use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to

create decorative designs.

Many of the pieces are flat but master artists like Walker use advanced techniques to create three-dimensional pieces like the one that will be on display in New York.

Walker started quilling in the ‘70s but went on hiatus from the art form as she became “busy with life.”

Retirement brought the time she needed to re-enter the fray and in 2001 she opened a studio in her Glenrosa home.

Peachland summer reading club returns We’re offering a bursary to one lucky Peachland graduate

The Peachland View is excited to announce that it will award one lucky local graduate with a bursary for preparing to pursue their post-secondary education.

Graduates are invited to write to the Peachland View to tell us (in 200-300 words) what impact or difference you would like to make in this world, and how the bursary will help you do that.

Summer is fast approaching and that means the library is gearing up for its annual Summer Reading Club (SRC)! This year the theme is “Book a Trip,” which has allowed us to come up with some creative programming!

Not only are there weekly in-library contests, book draws, and a guessing contest but we have five fabulous programs planned, including:

Mobile units will ensure thousands of women get breast screening services Province has invested $1.8M to upgrade three mobile units used across the province KEITH LACEY

ABERDEEN PUBLISHING Women who live in small towns like Peachland are going to benefit greatly from the latest technology upgrades being offered through the Screening Mammography Program offered by the B.C. Cancer Society.

The cancer society recently invested more than $1.8 million to invest in three new mobile units (that resemble large moving trucks) and all three trucks are loaded with the latest in breast screening technology, said Janette Sam, operations director for the cancer society’s Screening Mammography Program.

“The upgrades to our mobile units is very impressive,” said Sam. “They are actually like mini-hospitals. Complete with waiting rooms, dressing rooms and the very latest breast screening technology.

AN ADDITIONAL 20,000

women will be screened for breast cancer every year thanks to three new mobile units touring the province.

“The new mobile units will ensure that women across B.C. will be receiving the very best screening mammography.”

Screening results used to have to be sent to reporting centers for further examination, but the quality of the images with the new equipment is so vivid that

technologists can make determinations on site, she said.

The unit will return to Peachland area soon and anyone can now book appointments online, said Sam. “We usually visit the South Okanagan three or four times a year,” she said. “We usually visit Osoyoos, Oliver, Summerland and Peachland in the same week.

“I would expect we will return to Peachland once again in the next couple of months.”

The mobile unit that travels across the Southern Interior is operational 12 months of the year and is operated by two technologists, one who is licensed to drive the unit, said Sam. One mobile unit covers the northern region of the province and the third is operational across the Gulf Islands.

The Screening Mammography Program has been offered by the cancer

society since 1988 and mobile units were first introduced to smaller communities in 1990, she said.

“We are able to provide screening services for more than 20,000 women per year because of our mobile units,” she said. “The program has been an incredible success and allowed women from smaller communities to access breast screening services in their own communities rather than having to travel to the major centres across the province.”

There has been a 25-per-cent reduction in the number of deaths related to breast cancer since the mobile program started 25 years ago, she said.

“Early detection remains the biggest key to preventing deaths from breast cancer,” she said. “Our mobile units play a significant role in ensuring early detection for thousands of women across the province.”

New perinatal unit at Kelowna General Hospital now open ABERDEEN PUBLISHING A new perinatal unit where families from across the Okanagan Valley – including those in Peachland – will welcome their newborn babies into the world was celebrated recently at Kelowna General Hospital.

“Having a baby is one of life’s most joyous, and most stressful, moments,” said Premier Christy Clark, MLA for Westside-Kelowna. “This new unit will provide moms and loved ones with a state-of-the-art facility and soothing atmosphere in which to enjoy the start of a new life together.”

The new perinatal unit opened to patients in March.

It is located on the fourth floor of the recently opened Interior Heart and Surgical Centre and replaces the hospital’s existing labour and delivery unit.

“This new unit will support new families by offering patient-centred care in a personalized, wrap-around setting,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “Importantly, the unit will offer private, quiet and enhanced care for new mothers and their babies and support families in this growing region at a very special time in their lives.”

“The unit’s design certainly takes into account the need for comfort,” said Steve

Thomson, MLA for Kelow na-Mission.

“This is a patient and family-centred care environment with private and semi-private rooms, and family kitchen areas that create a warm atmosphere and fosters a sense of calm and well-being for both moms and babies.”

The new perinatal unit features expanded patient and clinical care space including five private labour and delivery rooms, and nine private and four semi-private postpartum rooms. It is also home to a new neonatal intensive care unit with the capacity to support up to 20 babies. The new unit will allow newborns, expectant mothers and their families to remain closer to home more often.

“After seeing the new perinatal unit firsthand, I know this is a place where the 1,600 babies born at Kelowna General Hospital every year will get the best start to life,” said Norm Letnick, MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country. “A modern neonatal intensive care unit with central monitoring, and areas for stabilization, transition and high needs babies will support parents whose newborns need a little extra help.”

In addition to modernizing patient areas, the new perinatal unit provides an excellent working environment for health-care providers who were directly

involved in the design of the unit.

This included the addition of a new operating room centrally located on the unit and dedicated to scheduled Caesarean section and multiple birth deliveries. In addition, with the new unit located within the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre, physicians can provide urgent Caesarean section deliveries in one of its 15 new operating rooms.

“On behalf of everyone at Interior Health and especially the health-care providers at Kelowna General Hospital, I would like to thank the provincial government and our partners at the Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District and the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation,” said Erwin Malzer, Interior Health Board Chair.

“Together, we are ensuring quality care and a nurturing environment for moms and babies, and a modern, healthy workplace for our employees.”

The perinatal unit is included within the $381-million budget for the new Interior Heart & Surgical Centre.

The Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District provided the $18-million capital cost of the unit and the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation has committed $3 million for new state-of-theart equipment and support funding.

“We know that the new unit is much needed and will be well used by growing families,” said Gail Given, chair of Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District. “It just made sense to go ahead and fully fund the construction of the fourth floor while the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre was being built, rather than waiting and adding the new unit sometime in the future.”

“Our community is extremely proud of KGH and their help is critical to make it what it is today. The KGH Foundation is extremely grateful for the support our community is providing to our most vulnerable patients through our Giving Giggles Campaign,” said Doug Rankmore, Chief Executive Officer, Kelowna General Hospital Foundation.

“Thanks to those who give to support the hospital we will be able to provide families, and the nurses and physicians providing care, the most up to date facility possible.”

Fiona Patterson, who was looking forward to the arrival of her first child, was very impressed with the unit.

“As first-time expectant parents, my husband and I were both thrilled upon touring the new perinatal unit at Kelowna General Hospital,” said Patterson. “The energy of this new birth space is one that pro-

motes relaxation and is really attuned to the needs of the whole family. The natural

light and aesthetics are so soothing, and we were impressed with the upgraded equip-

ment; it’s comforting to know that maternity care in Kelowna is a priority.”

Princeton Wordnet defines “team spirit” as: “The spirit of a group that makes the members want the group to succeed.” How fantastic is that? …the members want the group to succeed! I often speak about this trait when I give my presentation on Anti-Bullying in the Workplace.

We can recognize the health of a group when we realize that everyone is seeking the best for one another and for the organization.

Significantly, it has been the leadership that has attracted my interest and taught me the value of belonging to a group or organization. Others would agree that the team leader, “Must be cooperative, share ideas with the team, be confident, be of good knowledge, read more, be qualified for the job and must respect the ideas of the team.” At the same time, one’s attitude as a team-player is just as important.

1,000 participants flood South Okanagan for Half Corked Marathon DAN WALTON

REGIONAL REPORTER Hollywood heroes, adrenalized animals and poorly-balanced ballerinas were orthodox among the 1,000 participants who flooded the South Okanagan May 27 to stagger through the Half Corked Marathon.

Participants from across British Columbia as well as Alberta and some as far away as Ontario gathered for the incredibly-popular event, that drew 1,000 participants this year.

Andres was participating in the Half Corked for the first time, though he was joined by four returning participants, who were dressed as “rocks” chasing Indiana Jones with a giant “boulder.”

“Lots of painting involved in turning a giant soccer ball into a boulder,” Andres said. “It took many hours.”

Also spotted along the route was a pair of cheebras, which is a breed of cheetah crossed with a zebra.

“Cheebras also have some ninja elements to them as well,” said Meredith MacGreger from Vancouver, pointing to a symbol of a throwing star on her cheebra morph suit.

MacGregor and her friend Melanie Trepanier wear their cheebra suits as much as they can, but there aren’t as many opportunities to wear them in public outside of ski season.

There was some interspecies contact when the pair of cheebras crossed paths with an actual donkey at one of the wineries, which ended up being Trepanier’s most memorable part of the event.

“There were so many surprises and things we were not expecting,” she said.

However, the chief reason for them making the trip was the simple combination of wine tasting and running.

“There were lots of desserts, candies and wines along the way – didn’t know there would be so many snacks,” said MacGregor.

“This is the best event going in the Oliver area,” said John Ferreira, owner of Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery, which was the final winery stop along the route.

“Watching them run down my vineyard, it’s fantastic. It makes my heart sing. Who wouldn’t love this?”

In preparation for the marathon, Ferreira made sure his crops were especially neat and tidy, and marked with clear signage.

“Everything worked out just fantastic.”

At the marathon’s finish line at the Oliver Community Centre, live music was being played fittingly by the band Uncorked, andother wineries were on location to serve up more wine.

Each winery brought samples of its product, and some had more than beverages to share.

Covert Farms owner Gene Covert brought with him two of his gelatos. One flavour was made with Covert Farms’ strawberry rose sorbetto, and the other was a uniquely flavoured gelato, made with beets grown on the farm last summer.

“It’s really important that all of our wineries are supporting the event,” Covert said. “It’s a very unique event with great engagement, and a good combination of activity while enjoying wine and landscapes. Runners are very enthusiastic. They love this event.

They’re really into the experience and appreciate what we’re doing here.”

Carol Sheridan, a volunteer for Oliver Tourism Association, said even though the number of participants is capped around 1,000, the marathon just keeps getting bigger and better with each year.

“What I’m seeing is a lot more support from the sponsors,” she said. “It’s successful because people are often looking for ways to get out and be active, these adventure type events, the costumes, the fun, it’s so relaxed. Everybody’s so friendly here in Oliver, and with our volunteer support, there’s a reason why everyone comes back and everyone has a really good time.”
