97 closed in both directions for nearly five hours, involved a commercial vehicle that was reportedly carrying car parts, and a white Toyota.

According to the RCMP detachment’s media relations officer, Cpl. Joe Duncan, the RCMP’s traffic reconstruction expert reported that the driver of the Toyota, Grant Orville Wheeler, was headed northbound when he miscalculated and steered into oncoming traffic in an

effort to pass another northbound vehicle.

In doing so, Wheeler, who had just entered the two-lane section of highway south of Antlers Beach, collided with the southbound tractor-trailer unit, and went down an embankment, eventually coming to rest near a frontage road below.

Wheeler died at the scene, while his passenger, whose name has not been released, was taken to Kelowna

General Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer was injured.

The scene was attended by the West Kelowna RCMP, emergency services, Peachland Fire and Rescue Service, the BC Coroners Service and RCMP South East District Traffic Services and Reconstructionist Services.

An environmental response team also attended to deal with diesel on the road.

District considering positive ticketing program to address unsavoury behaviour occurring at Peachland’s skate park

Peachland residents are being encouraged to “reclaim” the skate park after concerns regarding noise and “violations of the air” were brought to the attention of district staff last month.

In a report presented to council at a committee of the whole meeting on May 27, Director of Community Services Cheryl Wiebe told the group she had not personally received any complaints surrounding the skate park, however, she was aware that both councillors, and other district staff, had received them.

In response, Wiebe said she had taken note of the complaints and created a list of options that would address each concern, the most arduous of which has been the complaints regarding noise.

“This is difficult to manage, as swearing and other unsavoury language in not illegal, or easy to regulate,” Wiebe explained.

“Typically the noise is during prime time hours [not early in the morning or very late at night] as our Parks bylaw dictates that the skate park is closed from dusk until 7 a.m.”

Any activities in the park after dusk, Wiebe added, are considered trespassing and should be reported to the RCMP. Nevertheless, Wiebe added, she and other members of district staff opted to investigate the costs related to the installation of a sound barrier wall along the back edge of the park.

Wiebe said the costs to provide a wall range, depending on the quality of sound protection and height required, range from $11,500 (6’ fence), $24,500 (10’ fence), and $34,500 (12’ fence).

“These are supply costs,” she pointed out. “Installation is additional.”

Hefty price tag aside, Wiebe feels there are a number of reasons not to consider this option.

“When the park was constructed, the RCMP encouraged us to not provide a visual restriction to the park,” she explained, adding that clear sight lines have helped ensure safety, as well as “appropriate behaviour” in the park.

“It’s not just true for the skate park. It’s also true for the neighbours. When you install a wall, you take away some of their safety too.” Wiebe added.

“We prefer to use natural barriers, which we discussed with the residents that live there.”

Other issues brought to council’s attention in Wiebe’s report include concerns regarding smoking at or near the skate park, which is discouraged in any children’s play space, by the district. The other concern Wiebe highlighted was the issue of garbage.

“It continues to be an issue in all district parks, “ she recalled.

“The skate park is the easiest to manage because of its design,” she assured her audience. “The skate park is the entrance to the community so we send staff every morning to ensure this gateway is kept beautiful.”

Moving forward, Wiebe said, she, along with district staff and bylaw officer Dale Zimmerman, have proposed some “creative” options to mitigate negative behaviour in the park.

Chief among those options, Zimmerman revealed, is a positive ticketing program, which would see the bylaw officer or a member of district staff issue a gift certificate or “ticket” rewarding good behaviour, such as taking proper safety precautions, like wearing a helmet, or acting as a positive role model to a younger child at the park.

“We don’t get too many complaints, really, but this is something that would be considered a proactive measure,” Zimmerman told The View on June 9.

But you know how it is, all it takes is one bad apple to ruin it for everyone else. We’re just looking at ways to deter the bad apple behaviour in the first place.”

In her report to council Wiebe said the resurrection of the local skate park advisory group and a Respect Our Park campaign, were also under consideration as preventative methods of protection for the park.

Despite some reservations, Wiebe said she still feels the park is a highlight in the community. In her comments following Wiebe’s report, Mayor Cindy Fortin suggested reevaluating the wording on the signage outlining appropriate park behaviour, as an additional

measure for protecting the park.

“Could you have a more blunt sign?” Fortin asked.

“Maybe it could suggest that swearing and excessive littering and vandalizing shouldn’t happen unless they want the park to close.”

“The kids that are engaging in that kind of behaviour are not going to stop to read that sign,” Wiebe responded. “They don’t have that kind of respect in place. Our sign is positive.”

Wiebe admitted she had been asked whether closing the park would be an option if things got “out of control,” but Wiebe feels that’s not necessary.

“If we’re going to do that [close the skate park] then we should consider closing Centennial Walkway because some of our dog owners don’t pick up their dog poop,” she pointed out.

“We have unsavoury behaviours in all parks and in all honesty, the skate park is actually one of our least troubled areas. The garbage is consolidated to one corner where the kids hang out and it takes us seven minutes in the morning to clean it up. Truthfully that amount of time we spend there is less than other areas.”

In the meantime, Wiebe concluded that she would encourage Peachland residents to reclaim the park by being proactive in reporting to the RCMP or bylaw.

Summer is finally here, but as the days are getting longer and warmer, noise levels produced by power boats, trucks and motorcycles with inadequate or no mufflers are getting louder.

How incredibly ignorant, and with literally millions of dollars invested in state of the art equipment, including helicopters, why has this obnoxious issue not been addressed?

You don’t need a muffler in each ear to appreciate the natural beauty of our valley.

The bylaws have been in place for years, and they are as relevant today as they were at the time they were adopted, and as citizens we have a right to insist these issues will be addressed.

Allowing this extremely offensive behavior to proliferate has also promoted some very aggressive driver attitudes.

Common courtesies and right-of-ways have become a thing of the past, and our highways are not safe to travel as a result of it. Virtually every day people are injured or killed.

Federal Maritime Occupational Health and Safety Regulations consider sounds in a workplace louder than 85 decibels to be hazardous.

The noise levels in our streets and highways are far beyond that.

Those obscene noise levels have also become an issue of invasion of our privacy, denying us our right to enjoy home and property.

Desecration of a tree Here I am again, writing to the newspaper about invasion and destruction of private property. This year, while I was absent from my home here in Peachland, someone had come up and cut branches off the 30 ft. fir tree that sits right outside my deck, and gives cover and quells traffic noise outside my bedroom window and when I sit out on my deck. The cut branches were dumped in my field.

Then about a week later, while I was out again, this person had brazenly come up and taken the branches away. I made inquiries with BC Hydro wondering if they had cut these branches but they said they made thorough inquiries and told me no one there had done this.

This tree was planted by my late husband and his brother as a peace symbol when they both returned to Canada after WWII, so not only is this a desecration of a private tree on a private property of a private citizen, but it is also a desecration of a tree planted in remembrance of young men felled during a world war and the return of others.

Could the person responsible get in touch and let me know the reason for this cruel decimation of a beautiful remembrance tree which took 70 years to grow and stood in all its grace and beauty and which was witlessly disfigured in about seven minutes flat? Or if anyone saw this incident taking place, could he/she please contact me at 778-479-0448.

While things were stolen before from around our field when my husband was alive, at least our home and garden was not stripped, but this is being done now openly and highhandedly.

While I think that a community does look out for widows and single women like they wholly do in my former Asian country of Sri Lanka, I can only hope we are more vigilant in the future and I won’t let cowardly acts of this nature erode my sense of safety or confidence in a pretty town that I have lived in for 43 years and love dearly. I have made the police aware of these incidents.

It’s the end of an era for Peachland’s Village Potters Guild ERIN CHRISTIE EDITOR

After more than a decade, the members of the Village Potter’s Guild have decided to close their doors, mainly because, as longtime member Fran Moss pointed out in an interview on June 10, the group no longer has a door to close.

“We had a lot of fun while we were around but after all this, I think we’re just done,” she explained.

For the past 12 years the guild operated out of a small

new location for the potters to work and store their equipment.

The food bank moved into a refurbished (by HFH volunteers), municipa lly-ow ned building on the 4000 block of 5th Street just before Christmas; the long and arduous search for a suitable home for the displaced potters was ultimately fruitless.

At a committee of the whole meeting on May 12, a sympathetic councillor Terry Condon suggested that in light of their “misstep”

structure situated on the site formerly occupied by the Peachland Food Bank.

Last September, the guild and the food bank were asked to vacate their buildings in order for them to be demolished and the land to be developed for Peachland’s Habitat for Humanity (HFH) project.

In their agreement with HFH, the district agreed to donate the .73-acre municipa lly-ow ned property to the not-for-profit organization and waive a number of development/permit fees as well as Development Cost Charges (DCCs).

In return, HFH agreed to improve some of the surrounding infrastructure, and provide a replacement food bank at a site.

In the meantime, council opted to task the district staff with finding a

in not requesting HFH secure a space for the potters as well as the food bank in their project agreement with the organization, the district consider allocating a storage space for the potters to use, free of charge, or pick up the tab for their current storage fee of $50 per month.

In retrospect, Condon said he felt the district should have included the potters in the initial agreement.

“I think we really underestimated how difficult it would be to find them a spot,” he continued.

“But the fact is we

moved them and it’s been six months, and we still don’t have anywhere for them to go and it is our problem,” Condon said on May 12.

Condon’s suggestion resulted in a lengthy discussion and a greater resolve on behalf of the district to find the guild a suitable location.

On May 26, the district’s director of community services, Cheryl Wiebe, reported to council that district staff had located a storage space in the sea can building at the fire department training site on Princeton Avenue.

If that space wasn’t sufficient, Wiebe said the remainder of the guild’s equipment could be stored in the basement of the Peachland Historic Primary School.

But for Moss, and the remaining members of the once-popular guild, the effort, though appreciated, is too little too late.

With no new members and no place to work, Moss says it just makes sense to disband.

“We really do appreciate the effort to find us a spot, we want council and the district to know that, but honestly, I think we’ve just been in limbo too long. And I don’t think the sea can building is going to be a practical solution. ” Moss continued to express the group’s understanding of the district’s predicament, but admitted, at times, she has been disappointed.

In 2003 the pair, both of whom are currently based out of Kelowna, parlayed that love into a full-time career, eventually quitting their day jobs to work on their novel, locating a local publisher and executing a successful social media and marketing campaign on Facebook and Twitter.

Getting an original work completed and published by a reputable firm took time, Taylor explained, but the duo firmly believes it was worth it.

Their advice for aspiring authors seeking to get their work published and in the hands of readers is to take every opportunity to “Say yes first and panic later!”

Their passion, and their current career, stems from their second shared love: a very specific subgenre of crime fiction, referred to

simply as “cozies.”

First coined in the late 20th century, the term “cozies” (short for cozy mystery) was devised when various writers produced work in which they attempted to re-create the golden age of fiction. Cozy mysteries are primarily characterized by their use of an amateur sleuth, lack of gore and profanity, offstage murder, small-town setting, humour and focus on the “whodunit” puzzle.

But in a culture where salacious sex fantasy novels such as E.L James’ astoundingly popular 50 Shades of Grey trilogy top the literary charts for weeks at a time, it may seem curious that two new authors would choose to launch a throwback series that is almost wholesome by comparison, but Taylor says that is precisely the point.

“They’re a fun read. That’s what cozy is all about, and that’s what we

both like to read; something light and fun, that you can curl up with and just enjoy,” Taylor explained during a recent book signing at the Peachland branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.

“There are actually a lot very active communities of cozy mystery writers and readers around,” she continued added, noting that their publisher, Cozy Cat Press, is devoted entirely to publishing the genre.

As people age, their dietary needs begin to change. Foods that were once staples of your diet as a youth may be restricted once you hit a certain age, while other foods you may have always avoided may now be necessary to fuel and support a healthy body.

Eating healthy foods and exercising may not be enough to sustain health,

as hormonal changes and other health effects as a person reaches age 50 can have a profound impact on his or her nutritional requirements. The following are a few things men and women over 50 may want to consider as they look to eat a healthy diet for years to come.

women age 50 and up have a reduced ability to produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin D will be needed from foods and supplements. Everyone over the age of 50 should take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU (10 µg), according to Canada’s Food Guide. Without adequate vitamin D, bone strength and health can deterio-

rate because vitamin D promotes calcium absorption. Vitamin D also has other roles, including helping neuromuscular and immune function and reducing inflammation.

People over age 50 should increase their intake of unsaturated fats and reduce consumption of saturated fats. Nutrient-rich unsaturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect against stroke, keep skin supple, and even help men and women maintain good neurological health.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, olives, seeds, and fatty fishes.

Increase protein

According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men and women need more protein in

their diets to maintain their muscle mass. The amount of protein needed at a younger age no longer may be adequate.

Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry. Beans are also a low-fat source of protein that can help fulfill daily protein requirements.

More fibre

Eating more fibre can help with digestive and intestinal problems, such as constipation.

Constipation can occur when fibre intake is not enough, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle. The best way to get fibre is through diet. Leave the skins on fruit and vegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Wholegrain breads and cereals also are good sources of fibre. Dry beans and lentils can add a fibre boost. Always increase fibre slowly to determine your tolerance.

Fewer calories

Women over the age of 50 need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depending on how physically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 calories per day.

With each passing year there is a decrease in the energy required to maintain body weight, so caloric intake should be adjusted accordingly.

More water

As a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as well as it once did, so it’s possible that you may not recognize when you are thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends around nine to 10 cups of beverages per day to remain hydrated.

Eating healthy and changing one’s diet is important as a person ages, as dietary needs at age 50 may be quite different from what they were at age 30.

N & R HOME OWNER GRANT INFORMATION The N & R Home Owner Grant is the longstanding Home Owner Grant combined with the new Northern and Rural Area Home Owner Benefit. The regular grant may reduce your taxes up to $770; the additional grant may reduce your taxes up to $1,045.

If the property is your principal residence, you may qualify for the N & R Home Owner Grant. Your principal residence is defined as the place you live in, and from where you conduct your daily affairs (for example, pay your bills, file your income tax returns, receive your mail, and have a telephone listing).

Cozy mysteries, Shkuratoff added, are fun to write, have dedicated readers, and are popular with publishers.

“I’ve been reading them since I was young, and I think, for a lot of us, it just brings you back to that sort of, glamorous, gilded age you see in old movies,” she continued.

“The tone of the kind of stories we, and a lot of ‘cozy’ authors write, have a certain playfulness to them,” Taylor chimed in.

With that in mind, she added, it seems only fitting that she and Shkuratoff chose the late 1950s and early 1960s as the backdrop for their series.

Set in the fictional California town of Santa Lucia (modeled after Santa Barbara) The Poppy Cove Mystery Series revolves around the “glamourous comings and goings” of the social set of the town.

Poppy Cove, Shkuratoff explained, is the design atelier run by the series’ two heroines, Daphne Huntington-Smythe and Margot Williams.

Their first outing, Strangled by Silk, follows Daphne and Margot, two “independent young California women,” who find themselves unexpectedly drawn into a murder mystery after they discover one of their top clients strangled to death with her own silk scarf.

Their second novel, Death of

a Beauty Queen has Daphne and Margot trying to solve the theft of a diamond necklace and the murder of reigning high society queen, Miss Santa Lucia.

Their third book, “A Nate to Remember,” is currently in the process of being released on Amazon and Kindle, with trade paperback copies available locally in July.

With two novels under their collective belt, and a third on the way, the pair, Taylor says she feels, as a writing team, they have stumbled upon a formula that seems to suit them.

“There’s a piece of advice every writer gets at some point, “ Taylor told the audience gathered for their appearance in Peachland on May 27.

“They tell us write what you know, and we do,” – both have spent a substantial amount of time living in California, and Shkuratoff is a former dress maker – “but for us, it’s more about writing what you love.”

Shkuratoff and Taylor will appear at Hooked on Books in Penticton, Saturday, June 13 until 1 p.m.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck JUDY WYPER

CONTRIBUTOR East of Eden, by John Steinbeck, was published in 1952.

It is partly an autobiographical account of his life as he was growing up in California’s Salinas Valley.

The book opens with an entire chapter describing the valley’s geographical and human history.

I was hooked by the story of how the land got to be how it is now.

The land was like a character. With impeccable and lyrical language, Steinbeck

carries memorable people over the landscape. They interact with it as much as with each other.

The characters express strong opinions about life. In one part, Adam, Samuel and Lee begin to discuss the Biblical story of Abel and Cain. Lee says, “I think this is the bestknown story in the world because it is everybody’s story.

I think it is the symbol story of the human soul.”

Their conversation centres on the part of the Bible where God says “thou shalt rule

over him,” referring to ruling over sin.

They argue over ways of interpreting the passage, looking at different versions of the Bible and meanings of words.

In time, Lee consults aged Chinese sages who, over a ten-year period, study the passage in Hebrew and Greek.

They say it could be translated as “thou mayest” triumph over evil. “But the word timshel – ’Thou mayest’ – that gives a choice.

It might be the most important word in the world. That says

the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if ‘Thou mayest’ it is also true that ‘Thou mayest not’.”

Lee continues later with, “But ‘Thou mayest’! Why, that makes a man great, that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice.

He can choose his course and fight it through and win...But think of the glory of the choice! That makes a man a man...”

The finely developed characters represent archetypes of person-

ality, make life-altering decisions and deal with the consequences.

Steinbeck speaks powerful messages through Lee. “Sometimes a kind of glory lights up the mind of a man...The events, even the important ones, may have trooped by faceless and pale. And then – the glory – so that a cricket song sweetens the ears, the smell of the earth rises chanting to his nose, and dappling light under the tree blesses his eyes. Then a man pours outward, a torrent of him, and yet he is not diminished. And I guess a man’s importance in the world can be measured by the quality and number of his glories.”

Steinbeck considered East of Eden his best work, and said the previous books were “practice for this.” I found the story thought-provoking and captivating.

BAT FACTS

Bat pups are born in the month of June. A newborn bat pup is the size of a man’s thumbnail and is covered in a leathery skin. Their fur grows as they mature.

Summer Reading Club returns NAOMI VANCAILLIE CONTRIBUTOR

Summer is well on its way and that means the children will soon be finished this school year and ready to enjoy some fun and adventures.

For the Okanagan Regional Library, that means preparing for another exciting session of Summer Reading Club!

The SRC is sponsored annually by the British Columbia Library Association, with the assistance of Libraries and Literacy, Ministry of Education.

In Peachland, as in many of our communities, the local Friends of the Library group enhances the program by sponsoring guest speakers and entertainers, and by providing funds to purchase additional program materials and prizes.

The goals of the program are to promote regular reading during the summer to help maintain or increase reading skills, develop a lifelong love of reading in children and have fun.

This year’s theme is “Build It!” a fabulous theme that will help keep kids hooked on reading, even after the weather warms up and the outdoor activities start calling.

Children ages 5 - 12 can look forward to participating in book-

based activities such as “Build a Robot Magnet” and “Let’s Get Sticky and Create with Duct Tape.” Magician Leif David is back by popular demand and is ready to “Build your imagination!” with a brand new show!

Summer Reading Club registration began on June 9, with programs running throughout the month of July.

For children under 5, we offer a preschool summer reading coloring challenge.

Help your child reach star status by reading 20 minutes a day and filling out the challenge chart which you can pick up at the Peachland branch.

Sharon Fitch enjoys the spontaneous process of discovering possibilities

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND, mixed media Born and raised in Ontario, Sharon Fitch returned to college to complete an interior design degree and then accepted a design position in Edmonton, AB, in 1975. She then owned and operated the “Design Studio” until the birth of her daughter. She moved

to Summerland, BC in 1992 and to Westbank in 2005.

Fitch has always been involved with the arts as a crafter, potter and designer over the years and dove head first into painting when she retired.

She loves to work with a number of

media and materials and experiment with what they can do – how just a small amount of sand off the beach mixed with some medium gives greater depth to a landscape or abstract. The possibilities are endless and the fun part for her is discovering them each and every day. “That’s the spontaneous process [to just let go and let it happen]. It gives

the artist such freedom.”

Fitch now has works hanging in clients’ homes and places of business in BC, Ontario, Alberta, Arizona, Florida, and the Netherlands.

She is still discovering her way and loves
