Gardener Pat Buchanan trims her roses to prepare them for entry into the Peachland Rose Show, which will take place on

Saturday, June 22 at the Peachland Community Centre.

The Peachland Rose Show will return this Saturday, this time at the Peachland Community Centre. The first Peachland Rose Show took place several years ago at the Peachland Little Schoolhouse. After a one-year hiatus the show returned last year, making a move over to Fourth Street Place. Anticipated to be bigger than ever, the show will once again change venues to accommodate a larger display and increased participation. As in previous years, entries will be judged by Danielle and Malcolm Scott, who have international experience in exhibiting and judging roses. The Scotts will be available to share their vast knowledge of roses after the judging has taken place. As well, a master gardener will be on hand to answer any questions about roses or any other plant concerns. The Peachland Rose Show is sponsored by the Sowers and Growers Garden Club. Garden club vice president Phyllis Papineau is encouraging everyone to enter as many roses as they like in this year’s show. “We’ve had some really nice hot days so it looks like a fabulous year for roses. You just have to walk anywhere in Peachland. Everyone has got blooming roses,” Papineau told The View. “Bring all your roses,” Papineau said. “SomeSee PEACHLAND on page 3

Tire trouble sends Semi truck crosses centre line on Highway 97; resulting crash disrupts traffic family into lake A 33-year-old Alberta woman and her three children were unexpectedly ejected into Okanagan Lake last Saturday night after one of the tires blew on the vehicle they were traveling in. The incident happened just before 8 p.m. approximately 1 km south of Princeton Avenue. The vehicle, a Dodge pickup truck, was traveling southbound on Highway 97 when the front driver’s side tire dis-

integrated, causing the pickup to veer across the oncoming lane and into Okanagan Lake. The driver, along with three children under the age of six, was transported to hospital in Penticton as a precaution as no injuries were immediately reported. RCMP media relations officer Kris Clark said the mechanical malfunction of the tire appears to be the sole factor in the crash.

Highway traffic was disrupted for approximately five hours on Monday night while crews worked to remove the debris resulting from a semi crash that happened near Brent Road just south of Peachland. At approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday night two semi trucks collided after a northbound semi truck apparently crossed the centre line and sideswiped a southbound semi trailer. RCMP media relations officer Kris Clark said fol-

Sometimes a really quirky rose that you don’t think is special will appeal to the judges. What we’re asking is that people bring as many roses as they want because it’s a rose show and we want everybody to have a good display and an opportunity to win a ribbon.

Papineau suggests keeping blooms in a cool, dark place if you plan on cutting your roses the night before the exhibit. Gardeners who wish to exhibit their roses in the

from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, and third place in all categories as well as Best of Show. Trophies will also be awarded for Best

Rose and Best Miniature Rose. Papineau says the roses do not have to be named and there is no limit to how many entries are submitted in each category. A rose show brochure is available at Dogwood Nurseries and Bylands in West Kelowna and locally at the Peachland Community Centre and Ace Hardware. A tea will also take place concurrent with the show, in addition to a rainbow auction of a variety of garden related items. “It’s really lovely having tea with the beautiful scent of roses all around,” Papineau said. The Peachland Rose Show will take place at the Peachland Community Centre on Saturday, June 22. The show will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A presentation of awards will take place at 3:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. OPINION

We ignore scientists at our peril David Suzuki It’s happening again. Research confirms agreement among most climate scientists that we are altering the Earth’s climate, mainly by burning fossil fuels. And industrial interests, backed by climate change deniers, pull out every trick to sow doubt and confusion. What will it take for us to start seriously tackling the problem? For the latest study, investigators led by John Cook at Skeptical Science examined abstracts of 12,000 peer-reviewed papers on climate science. They also received comments from 1,200 scientists, who rated more than 2,100 full studies. In both cases, more than 97 per cent of studies that took a position on the causes of global warming said human activity is a primary factor. Less than one per cent rejected the consensus position. The results are consistent with previous research. As expected, deniers are out in full force, many employing methods common to those who reject science. Medical scientists Pascal Diethelm and Martin McKee examined these tactics in the European Journal of Public Health: cherry picking, reference to fake experts, misrepresentation and logical fallacies, impossible expectations of what research can deliver and conspiracy theories. Deniers often rely on talking points spread by a handful of usual suspects, including Christopher Monckton in the U.K., the Heartland Institute and Anthony Watts in the U.S. and Friends of Science and Tom Harris in Canada. The Alberta-based group was caught several years ago funnelling

money – most from fossil fuel companies – through a “Science Education Fund” at the University of Calgary. It was used to create a disinformation campaign and video with Harris, who then worked with PR firm APCO Worldwide and now heads up an organization called (ironically) the International Climate Science Coalition, which rejects the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change. According to Desmog Blog, Friends of Science has misrepresented the recent survey, calling it “careless incitement of a misinformed and frightened public, when in fact the sun is the main driver of climate change; not human activity or carbon dioxide.” Science isn’t perfect, but it’s one of the best tools we have for understanding our place in the cosmos. When people around the world apply rigorous scientific method to study our actions and their impacts on the things that keep us alive and healthy – clean air, water, soil and biodiverse plants and animals – we must listen, not just about climate, but about a range of issues. Humanity has changed direction before. When our tools become outdated, we invent new ones. It’s why in many countries, we no longer rely on slavery to maintain economies, we can all vote regardless of race or sex and we enjoy longer and healthier lives than before. Many systems we’ve invented don’t apply to current circumstances. We can and must change the way we act. That requires listening to scientists and those who are working on solutions, and not to the naysayers and deniers who would keep us stalled in a doomed spiral.

Peachland Views Response to error noted in Chronicles of Peachland Re: Omissions and Errors Noted in Chronicles of Peachland. We would like to respond to the letter from Maggie Brooks, which appeared in the May 31 edition of The View. After some investigation, the editorial board has confirmed that Maggie is correct in that Danny Lovelock was indeed the male Peachland Ambassador for 2002 – 2003 and that his name should have been included in the Chronicles. The members of the editorial

board offer Maggie and her son Danny Lovelock our sincere apologies for this omission. The Chronicles of Peachland is the result of a tremendous community effort. The 43 contributing authors wrote from the heart and volunteered their time to make this publication one we can all be proud of; however, the board very much regrets this factual error and the disappointment it has caused. Election promises broken before being elected There are members of the Senate, a most honourable and prestigious position, who can’t keep their fingers out of the piggy bank, also known as travel and expense funds. These are not minor offences but involve many thousands of dollars. The first reaction of our Prime Minister? Cover it up. Here in B.C. we have a politician who loses her seat in an election. Is she out of the game? No! She is given a second chance to regain her seat in a “safe” riding. Before even being elected Premier Christy Clark has broken her promise of fiscal accountability. She has authorized salary increases of unconscionable amounts for her senior staff members. She says the raises will not affect the budget because the money

was found elsewhere. Well, it’s still public money and it could have had a favourable effect on the budget. Essentially it means all important governmental decisions made over the next four years in our province will be made by someone who was rejected by the voters in her home riding and who can’t keep an election promise for more than a couple of days. Is this democracy or dictatorship? We recently had a news release that informed us that the elderly in provincial care homes who require the use of wheelchairs will be charged $25 per month for the use, regardless of their ability to pay. Perhaps the “found” money that is funding the big raises to Clark’s senior staff could have been used to offset these costs. Derek Coyle, Peachland

Vote with your tastebuds at byelection cookie poll Liberals, New Democrats and BC Conservatives can vote in the WestsideKelowna byelection with their taste buds by purchasing their candidate cookies

of choice at Bliss Bakery & Bistro. Voters can choose either the Christy Chunk Cookie, the NDPB Cookie or the Upshaw Oatmeal Cookie.

Throughout the campaign, constituents can visit Bliss Bakery’s Facebook page to find out if voters are sweeter on Christy Clark, Carole Gordon or Sean Upshaw.

Voters can purchase their cookie ballots at all three Bliss Bakery locations, and in a startling alteration of electoral precedent, are allowed – even encouraged

– to vote multiple times. “In a first for the Okanagan, residents and non-residents alike have the opportunity to cast their informal votes in a

comfortable, neutral, nonpartisan environment,” says Barry Yeo, owner and production manager at Bliss. “Apparently, you can have your vote and eat it too.”

Outdoor fitness equipment to be installed at Lambly Park Joanne Layh

Peachland View

Lambly Park will soon be home to “seniorsfriendly” outdoor fitness equipment, director of community services Cheryl Wiebe announced in a press release last Friday. The new equipment is being added to the park to help seniors in the community age actively. “In addition to the equipment, the district will be working with the Peachland Wellness Centre to develop an education and awareness program to help seniors become familiar with safe use and help seniors overcome any uncertainty in using the equipment,” Wiebe said. Funding for the project was made possible SAV

through a successful federal New Horizons for Seniors Program grant application, along with local contributions from the Peachland Rotary Club and the Peachland Lions Club. “By having the support of community partners, we are able to maximize federal grant funding to create a truly valuable project for the citizens of Peachland,” Mayor Keith Fielding said. “The addition of the skate park in Lambly Park focused on youth and with the installation of seniors’ focused fitness equipment, Lambly Park is becoming a multi-generational hub for Peachland. Our thanks to the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Peachland Rotary, the

Peachland Lions Club and the Peachland Wellness Centre for their contributions to this great project.”

Wiebe said the district will install the new fitness equipment in Lambly Park by early this fall.

An official announcement about the project was scheduled to be made at Lambly Park on Thurs-

day, June 20. Due to poor weather it has been postponed, likely until mid-July.

Okanagan Paddlefest seeks volunteer coordinator Joanne Layh

Peachland View

If you are looking for a new opportunity to get involved in the community this summer, then Okanagan Paddlefest organizers might have just the thing. Organizers of the upcoming Okanagan Paddlefest event are currently looking for a volunteer coordinator to help organize the firsttime event to Peachland. The opportunity would offer someone the satisfaction of being involved on the ground level with an event that is expected to attract huge numbers of people to Peachland and hopefully go on to become

a major annual Okanagan event. Okanagan Paddlefest is set to take place on Satur-

day, August 10 at various locations around downtown Peachland, and will include a wide variety of events for people of all ages. The event will

include a war canoe demonstration, dragon boat races, kayak races, stand up paddling races, various activities children and youth, live music and a parade of boats to close the festival.

To add to the activity, Okanagan Paddlefest will

coincide with the annual Rattlesnake Island Swim, which will take place in the morning and wrap up just as Paddlefest is getting underway. The

organizers

are

hoping to find a volunteer coordinator who has volunteer experience, preferably within Peachland. “We’re looking for somebody who has the community interests at heart and has some experience with volunteering. It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone who has been a volunteer coordinator before,” Okanagan Paddlefest organizing committee member Dave Stuart told The View. The successful candidate

will possess good organizational abilities, enjoy working with other people, and have an interest in being involved in community events. As Okanagan Paddlefest is a first-time event that is still in the planning stages, it is uncertain at this stage just how many volunteers the coordinator will be responsible for, but Stuart says they anticipate approximately 50 volunteers. “We know it is going to be in the dozens,” Stuart said. The volunteer coordinator will be responsible for coordinating volunteers both on land and in the water. “We’re going to have the dragon boats, the war canoe, stand up paddle boards, kayaks, set up, take down, communications, and a vendor area and all of those are going to require volunteers,” Stuart said. “We’ll hopefully have someone in charge of each of the areas and they are going to identify specifically what their volunteer needs are and then communicate that back to the coordinator. The coordinator will then be in charge of allocating the right person to the right position.” If coordinating up to 50 volunteers seems a bit daunting, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities available for those who want to get involved with the event hands on. Stuart says they are in-

terested in volunteers from any age group and will try to ensure opportunities match volunteers’ interests and skills. “Anybody who has volunteered realizes that there is a sense of contributing, of giving back to their community, and of camaraderie. You make new friends and get a sense of contributing to the overall wellbeing of the community,” Stuart said. “It’s a really rewarding feeling. Peachland lives by its volunteers. You’ve seen that time and time again. The people who volunteer continue to volunteer because it’s a rewarding proposition.” The volunteer coordinator will also have the opportunity to connect with the lake in a unique way. “This festival in particular is going to be hopefully something new for a lot of people in Peachland. It’s going to hopefully tie people back to the lake. One of the reasons why we’re all here is the lake. We walk by it everyday and maybe start to take it for granted but this ties back into it and gives us a chance to partici-

Highlights of the regional board meeting – June 13 Regional grantin-aid review committee

The regional board has approved the terms of reference for its committee that will review the regional grant-in-aid program. Directors Colin Basran, Jim Edgson and Doug Findlater will serve on the committee to review current policies regarding the regional grant-in-aid program and recommend to the board whether and what changes may be needed. The committee is expected to report back to the board by the fall so that any changes can be implemented in time for the 2014 budget process.

Dog service update

The regional board has received an update on the progress underway towards implementing recommendations to encourage and support responsible dog ownership within the Central Okanagan. All dogs within the Central Okanagan must be licenced and the Dog Control Service

is now focusing attention in this area. Dog owners are reminded that starting January 1, there will be zero tolerance for dogs found without a licence and off leash. In addition, work is underway on launching a rewards program for responsible dog owners who licence their pet. Further information will be provided in the months ahead as the dog bylaw is reviewed and changes are proposed for regional board consideration later this year.

Regional board meetings

Regional board meetings are held at the regional district office located at 1450 KLO Road, Kelowna in the Woodhaven boardroom. Residents are welcome to attend. • Monday, June 24 at 7 p.m.; • Thursday, July 18 - following the 8:30 a.m. governance and services committee meeting; and • Monday, July 29 at 7 p.m.

New Monaco seeks council and community input on design of building development Joanne Layh

Peachland View

Peachland council and the community at large had an opportunity to offer their input on design options for the proposed New Monaco development this week. The New Monaco property stretches across 125 acres at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 97C. Back in 2011 New Monaco received Peachland council’s unanimous approval for an Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment to include the New Monaco concept within its OCP, which would allow for the development of 2,600 – 2,800 units. Since then, New Monaco vice president of development Mark Holland has been in detailed discussions with key medical, educational and technology operators to recruit tenants and develop strategic partnerships.

Wednesday to gather public input about design options for the proposed New Monaco development.

The proposed development will begin with the construction of medical, commercial and boutique retail buildings and will later include multi-density residential buildings. Earlier this week Peachland council and the local media were invited by New Monaco on a bus trip to the Westbrook Village community on the UBC campus in Vancouver to get a sense of the direction the developers intend to take with their project. The Westbrook Village community shares many of the design features Holland hopes to bring to Peachland such as plaza areas, stormwater system water

features and community gardens. Holland says the land use design for New Monaco was inspired by UBC’s Westbrook Village and the community has many similarities in character and form to what they would like to achieve here. Holland, along with New Monaco managing coowner Paul Tsang, toured the Vancouver community with members of council to demonstrate how the combination of urban buildings within a rural setting of farms, nature trails and community gardens could work in Peachland. To gather public input on design preferences, an open house was held last

Wednesday where residents were presented with the following options and asked to complete a survey to gather their likes and dislikes: • Neo-traditional craftsman; • Heritage urban warehouse; • Westcoast contemporary; • Arts and crafts bungalow inspired; • Mountain architecture; • Contemporary urban village mixed use; • Contemporary desert architecture; • Traditional Southwest desert architecture; • Arid climate European architecture; • Industrial chic; and • High design and dramatic modernism. Residents were also asked to offer their own ideas about what an Okanagan aesthetic should include. The New Monaco developers say they will return to Peachland to share the results of the survey at another public information session before they bring a zoning application to council this fall.

Bat rePort

Bat for a cause at slo-pitch tournament this weekend DarLene hartForD

SPecial to the Peachland View

More than 800 bats have returned to Peachland primary school building and seem undisturbed by construction in the former schoolhouse. These numbers were revealed during the first official bat count this year. Volunteers participating in the bat program look forward to an increase in numbers once the pups are born then

flying. However, during the first count statistics were accumulated from the front dormers only therefore the count may not reflect true numbers roosting in the attic. Teams of two people with hand held tally counters recorded bats exiting each dormer for one hour after dusk. An average of the two totals determine the official count. Precipitation, cloud cover, wind and temperature are recorded to assist in determining accuracy.

The remaining three bat counts for 2013 will take place on Thursday June 20, Monday, July 29, and Thursday, August 15. It is anticipated the next count will be similar in numbers to the first, however, July and August will include the newborns and should reveal substantial increases. Volunteering to assist in a provincial bat count is a fun summer activity for families and visitors. Hand held counters and tally sheets are provided

to volunteers. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, contact the Peachland Visitor Centre at 250-767-2455. The popular Bat Chat event from last summer is going on the road. One of the topics at summer reading programs of South Okanagan libraries is “wings”. Bat Chat programming has been requested by the Kaledon, Okanagan Falls, Keremeos, and Oliver library branches. Bat Chat will also be given in West

Kelowna Library on July 16 and Peachland Library on July 31. Did you know that bats, unlike other small mammals, are very long lived for their size? They can live up to 38 years but have many predators depending on where they live or roost. Biologist Tanya Luszcz says owls and snakes are likely the main natural predators whereas in urban areas cats and humans are nonnatural predators. Join us this summer at a library

near you for more fun facts about bats. Other upcoming events include Bat for a Cause, which will be held at the Peachland Mixed SloPitch Tournament on June 22 from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. At the event batters will try to hit balls into cans located in right, centre and left field. Prizes will be awarded for grabs at this fundraiser event in support of Peachland bats educational program. Your support is appreciated.

Asparagus offers much more than just stinky pee PatriCia GueSt

SPecial to the Peachland View

Asparagus is such a treat. I am always so excited when the first lugs of local asparagus appear at the markets. The crisp unique flavour of our first true vegetable of the season wets our whistle for the coming fresh B.C. vegetables and luscious fruits. Asparagus is a member of the lily family along with garlic, tulips, and of, course lilies. There are over 52 different varieties including the wild ones that can be found along our roadsides in the county when there is still plenty of moisture in the ground. Wild asparagus is taller and thinner than its domesticated kin. The white asparagus so prized by Europeans is not a different variety. It is just grown without daylight so photosynthesis does not happen. This year I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon driving

to Armstrong rummaging around at a couple of antique stores, sampling some up and coming wineries and looking for the best asparagus. I happened upon Fredericks Asparagus where I was treated to a garden tour in their home field. There I finally saw an asparagus trailer. Have you ever thought about how they might harvest asparagus? I knew asparagus was harvested by sliding along the ground face down but was unprepared for the four ironing boards attached to an axle. The pickers lie face down on boards that narrow at the shoulders and are towed down the long rows of asparagus snapping the spears off just above ground level and tossing them into the big lugs you see at the markets. Talk about good neck muscles! This beautiful veggie is adaptable, elegant and nutritious. Paired with lemons, bathed in creamy hollandaise or barbequed

wrapped in prosciutto and sprinkled with fresh ground pepper it never fails to raise the bar at any meal. Despite its numerous attributes it still gets a bad rap for the stinky pee issue but apparently only some of us have the ability to smell it. Some studies report as many as 75 per cent of us excrete stinky pee after eating asparagus but only 22 per cent of us can smell it. Asparagus pairs so well with so many things it is hard to pick a recipe that does it justice for everyone. I know the thought of making homemade hollandaise sauce sends most of you screaming into the prepared foods aisle to buy a pack of powder. Don’t. If you have a blender and you are slow and steady I guarantee this will work for you. If it doesn’t all is not lost. If it does look like it is going to split (too high a heat) have a little handheld mixer handy and beat it on high speed until it

have fresh strawberry jam and frozen strawberries for the year. The picking is easy and the fields are clean and beautiful. On the GMO scene, engineered wheat that is illegal in every country was found in Oregon. It escaped from trial fields and has been multiplying for the past nine years.

Korea and Japan immediately banned U.S. imports of wheat. Imagine what would happen here if every apple gets the gene from the GMO apple that does not brown. They are asking to have unrestrained release of this apple in the Okanagan. Let your MP know you do not want it!

Level: Intermediate

Here’s How It Works - Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20

Pisces, though you feel like you have just been going through the motions, others are far more impressed than you think.

Food for the Soul

Discipline and contrition teach us important lessons Pastor Ed Skutshek

Grace Lutheran Church Special to the Peachland View

“The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:5) Fifty years ago I started my schooling at Bannatyne Elementary School, located in the St.

James area of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Every morning we heard a Bible reading, sang O Canada and prayed the Lord’s Prayer. At the end of every school day we sang God Save the Queen. I was the oldest son of immigrant parents. I was the first Canadian born child in my extended family to start school in Canada, thus my relatives followed my progress with some interest. The teachers towered over me. They were authority figures. They had to be obeyed. I was in awe of them.

However, after a while I became more familiar with my teachers. One Monday morning I was more interested in talking to my friends than listening to my teacher. After the third warning, Mrs. McConnell ordered me to stand in the hallway. My life had been transformed in an instant. I was now one of those “kids in the hall.” I was not sure what was going to happen to me. I was not sure how long I was going to be out in the hall. What would my parents say? More importantly, I wondered what would my parents do to me once they found out? Just then Mr. Simms, our vice principal, came around the corner. He was rounding up all the kids that were in the hall. I was ordered to get into line with four older boys. Mr. Simms marched us into the school office. He took the oldest boy into his office first and closed the door. He spoke sternly to the boy. Then we heard a strap hit the boy’s hand. I counted four times. The boy came out with tears in his eyes. The next boy went in. He got four straps as well. He cried as he left the office. The third boy got three straps. He cried even harder. The fourth boy got two straps he also cried. I was next.

A hooded Merganzer and its young paid a visit to the Bliss wharf this week. I was deathly afraid. These older boys were obviously hurt by the strap; hurt enough to cry. What would happen to me? If it hurt these older boys so bad,

and got me. He took me by the hand and pulled me into his office. He closed the door. My first response was to cry out for mercy. “Please don’t strap me. I’m sorry. I

what would it do to me, a first grader? I did not want to get the strap. I did not want to go into Mr. Simms’ office. Mr. Simms came out

won’t talk in class when I shouldn’t again. I promise,” I said. Mr. Simms had mercy on me. He said he was going to take me at my

word that I was sorry and would behave in class. He assured me that he was not going strap me. However, he declared that if he caught me in the hall again I would get the strap. He opened the door and escorted me to my class. I rejoined my class. I never made another trip to the principal or vice principal’s office again for a disciplinary visit. That visit to the vice principal’s office was a watershed moment in my life. It shaped my impressionable mind. I had to admit to myself and Mr. Simms that my attitude and behaviour in class were wrong. I had broken the rules. The teacher was trying to impart skills and knowledge that would be the foundation for my learning for the rest of my life. I had experienced fear. But I also experienced something else. I learned that if I confessed my fault, expressed contrition and a desire for amendment of my way I would be shown mercy and grace. I was also given a second chance and I took it. God puts people like Mr. Simms and Mrs. McConnell into our lives to discipline us, to chasten us so that we can become better people. God puts the gospel of Jesus Christ into our lives. The gospel often confronts us and our behaviour makes us uncomfortable. God does that so that we can confess our faults, desire to change, receive forgiveness and a second chance. For some it’s easy to think of church as Mr. Simms’ office and not want to go in. Here’s a challenge: go in and be confronted by the gospel. Be disciplined. It could change your life.
