Peachland Arts Club adds new works to the Beach Avenue banner collection By Joanne Layh
At least 30 new handpainted banners will soon be on display along Beach Avenue, thanks to members of the Peachland Arts Club. Some banners have been displayed in the past, but there will be many new additions this year. How did handpainted banners come to find their way onto Beach Avenue? Arts club member Wayne Power explained, “Mike Henderson had the idea as a councillor and he wanted to have some form of art expression along Beach
Avenue and the idea was put together with Ken Chilton who was with Public Works.” The banner project has received ongoing support from the municipality ever since, Power said. “The stretchers and tables are supplied by the municipality. They delivered them and set them up for us…they also bought the paint for us and it will stay somewhere so that it can be used next year,” Joan Dupuis told the View. As the Arts Club is currently without a venue in the community, they’ve been using a members’
garage as a workspace. Over a dozen members of the club have volunteered countless hours to get the banners ready for spring display. The new banners were produced by Deb Livingstone, Wayne Hemsley, Phyllis Papineau, Shirley Hathway, Elizabeth Gregory, Jan Topp, Joan Dupuis, Richard Smith, Carol Ewasiuk, Elsie Mussel, Helen Dunion, Chris Berry, Wayne Power, Lorraine Cross, Ruth Munroe, and Joan Walter. If anyone wants to know more about the art banners, they’ll soon have a chance.
“It’s going to be interesting when we have our Banner Walk,” Power said, “We’ll have an Banner Walk where people, the public, will come along with the artist and the artist will describe their banner.” The Banner Walk will take place at 2 p.m. on April 18th. The walk will begin at the Historic Rotary Wall on Beach Avenue and will finish at the Little Schoolhouse, where there will be a children’s art display and refreshments. The walk is one of many local events scheduled during Arts and Culture Week.

The future of the Westside landfill will be up for discussion at five information open houses scheduled during April. There are plans to develop a temporary convenience solid waste disposal and recycling centre at the site along Asquith Road as the Central Okanagan Regional District intends to stop burying garbage at the Westside landfill by mid-year. “At that point we’ll con-
C
tinue to offer an outdoor, residential drop-off for self-hauled garbage, recycling, yard waste, wood waste and appliances and will be open four days each week, which reflects customer use for disposal service. But instead of burying the garbage in the landfill, once it’s closed we’ll be transporting garbage and yard waste for disposal at the Glenmore Landfill which will be the only active landfill in the Central Okanagan,” communications coordinator Bruce

Canadian Boxing legend George Chuvalo coming to Peachland By Joanne Layh Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo will appear at the Peachland Recreation Centre on March 27th to speak out against drugs. Hosted by the Peachland Boxing Club and sponsored in part by the District of Peachland, the heavyweight champion turned motivational speaker will give a presentation at 5 p.m. After the presentation, there will be a boxing tournament at the same venue where Chuvalo will hand out trophies at the end of each bout. “What a memory, a Peachlander youths’ fi rst ever boxing event, with George Chuvalo ringside!” Peachland Boxing Club president John Wardley said. “This is a not to miss event, a once in a life time shot. If you want your child, or someone you know and love to hear the truth about substance abuse (tobacco, alcohol and drugs) or if you just want to rub shoulders with a
legend, this is the event.” George Chuvalo’s personal life has been marked by tragedy caused by drugs. His fi rst wife and three of his five children died as a result of either substance abuse or suicide. Today he travels the world as a motivational speaker against all forms of substance abuse. Wardley says listeners can expect a powerful and graphic appearance from Chuvalo. “He de-glamorizes drug use by giving examples of what he has witnessed fi rst hand. One fact is true - addicts always begin with experimentation. He also stresses the fact that in the criminal system, the majority of crimes are committed as a result of substance abuse. In most cases, addicts turn into criminal, not criminals into addicts. He leaves the students and other groups with a message of hope for our future while inviting the listener into his private life and sharing some of what he has
learned about life, with the hopes of reaching those who are at risk.” In his professional boxing career, Chuvalo has faught Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, and Floyd Patterson, among others. “George Chuvalo was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada by Queen Elizabeth in 1998 in recognition of his hard work and dedication to Canada’s youth, and was awarded a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2005,” Wardley wrote to the View, “Folks, this is going to go into Peachland history.” The presentation takes place on March 27th at 5 p.m. Doors open at 4 p.m. with general seating. Tickets for the presentation by George Chuvalo can be purchased for $20 each at Johnston Meyer Insurance, located at 5878C Beach Avenue.

Cliff, affectionately nicknamed “The Grinder” because of his patient and determined style of play, will be refereeing the final game of the Peachland Snooker Tournament for what will surely be a memorable game for those 2 finalists and the many spectators cheering on. Following the finalist game, Cliff Thorburn will be holding six short games where local players can test their skills against the world champion. There will also be a tournament match be-
tween “The Grinder” and a local award winning snooker player and this will be followed by Cliff demonstrating a range of trick shots. Peachland Little Snooker League also coincides with the 25th anniversary of “The Grinder’s” maximum break, the first ever in the sport’s most prestigious competition. “The Grinder” scored 147 against Terry Griffiths on April 23rd, 1983. With 13 Canadian titles and 27 professional championships worldwide, Cliff’s accomplishments speak volumes about his dedication to the sport. On December 19, 1983, Cliff was granted the prestigious designation, Member of the Order of Canada, recognizing a lifetime of distinguished service to his community and sport. Thorburn has also been inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. On Sunday, March 28th, come on out and meet this incredible sportsman and enjoy a full afternoon of snooker.

Underfunding isn’t the issue WEEKLY COMMENTARY BILL BARISOFF, MLA In last week’s MLA report, I wrote about the increase in total government spending forecast in the 2010 BC Budget. To be more exact, the total spending will be the highest ever at over $39 billion. In just two year’s time, the forecasted BC Budget for 2012 will see funding increased to close to $43 billion. These are significant increases in the spending of your money, and much of that new money will go towards health and education. In spite of record increases in the spending of your tax dollars, there are those who still like to use the term “underfunding” as it applies to our health care community and education funding. For many of you, B.C. personal income taxes, MSP premiums and PST (soon to be replaced by the HST), are how you send
the majority of your hard earned money to Victoria each year. Now here is the problem that we, as British Columbians all must become more aware of. In the 2010 B.C. Budget, your personal income taxes paid will amount to roughly $5.8 billion. MSP Premiums add a further $1.7 billion and the HST, after all of the rebates and exemptions, is expected to generate $3.7 billion. Combine these significant streams of revenue and there is a total of over $11 billion. Add on tobacco tax revenue of $686 million and $148 million in lottery revenues being re-directed into a health special account and the grand total is now close to $12 billion. That is a very significant stream of revenue. The problem is that the B.C. health care budget for this year alone is some $14.7 billion. This leaves a revenue shortfall of nearly $3 billion just for health care fund-
ing. As you can see, five very significant revenue sources can no longer meet current health care costs, let alone the $2 billion in increases coming over the next three years including Budget 2010. Some have criticized the government for trying to place more recognition on the real and escalating costs of providing health care. As taxpayers, I believe you deserve to know how many sources of tax revenue that you pay into each and every day that can no longer fund health care alone. Health care over the past decade has gone from being roughly 34 percent of all government spending to close to 42 percent at present and 45 percent when the $2 billion in increased health spending occurs by 2013. When you next hear the term “underfunding” remember that it is the spending of your tax dollars being questioned.

The MADames’ Sensational Debut
At the Peachland Wellness Centre’s Gala Benefit at Legion #69 last Saturday night, the jam-packed audience were treated to the dynamic debut of The MADames: Melita, Anita, Dagmar (no surnames needed, as anyone who is aware of the entertainment scene in Peachland knows of them). They performed four songs as a trio spaced throughout the evening, and as soloists for the remainder of the time. Their opening song was a seductive interpretation of Gypsy Rose Lee’s “Let Me Entertain You,” which suggested to the crowd that they were in store for a fun evening. The three singers have their own distinctive style: Melita, with her rich renditions of the “standards,” Anita, with her patented R&B vocalizations and Dagmar, a lively country artist with a dab of show tunes. Melita’s heart-rendering version of “The Rose” deeply moved a hushed audience, and in Anita’s “Try a Little Tenderness,” the passage “…but words soft and gentle makes it easier to bear,” evoked stirrings from females, who have experienced little tenderness. Dagmar, in her opening song, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” from the movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, gave a captivating performance. Her sassy and sensual rendition a la Marilyn Monroe, with her accompanying body language, complete with gestures and gyrations, received a tremendous ovation. The trio’s closing number was an upbeat version of Mama Mia, with an invitation to the audience to join in. A standing ovation ensued and their encore was “Shout,” again inviting audience participation. Again, the group is The MADames: Melita, Anita and Dagmar - don’t miss their next gig. They will entertain you! Incidentally, these vocalists donated their time to the Peachland Wellness Centre, who appreciated all those gave donations at the event. Bud Day

To Mayor and Council of Peachland, I fully support the Peachland Curling Club. It is a yes, yes, yes as far as I am concerned. The Curling Club is good for Peachland seniors, the juniors and all in between. It will be a new focal point for the citizens of Peachland, and it should generate business for Peachland businesses. Also, it is a gift from the higher levels of government with their $2.66 million contribution. It should be built. However, in regard to the proposed new Peachland lakefront pathway, I think this would be a waste of money as very few Peachland citizens use the current lakefront pathway. In addition, how can Peachland council spend over a million dollars of taxpayers’ money on the proposed new walking path without a referendum approved by the Peachland taxpayers, or at very least the use of the Alternate Approval Process? How come, eh? Larry Weisgarber, Peachland

Salute to Peachland Centennial Volunteers! Almost 600 individuals volunteered in 2009 to make the Centennial Events happen – an outstanding collective effort for a community the size of Peachland. The names of all these volunteers will be permanently recorded on a framed document to hang in Peachland Museum. The names have been collected from the organizers of the Centennial Events as the events happened in 2009. In order to ensure that the document includes everyone who served as a volunteer, we are publishing the list of names here. This is the opportunity to add anyone who may have been missed. If you, or anyone you know, served as a volunteer in a Centennial Event last year and are not on the list, please phone 250 767 9344 by Friday March 26. In addition, if you notice anyone whose name is misspelt, please also let us know. One point of clarification. This is a list of Volunteers, not Participants. Participants are those who attended or took part in a Centennial Event, such as running the Canada Day 5K run, or being in the parade. This is not the same thing as being a volunteer, who were the people who, in their own time, arranged and organized events, or helped them happen by, for example, taking tickets at the door, setting out chairs, being involved in set up and take down – in other words the folk who made participation possible.

The Peachland View
From the desk of the Mayor Yard waste: 240 litres enough for most COMMENTARY MAYOR KEITH FIELDING As spring approaches, so has the start-up of the new yard waste collection system. Given the changes that have occurred with the introduction of green bins, it may be useful for readers to get a reminder as to how the new service works, and the options available for those with excess amounts of garden waste. In the past, residents were served by a spring and fall collection system whereby on a specified day, yard waste in clear plastic bags, along with bundled and tied pruning materials, could be placed at the curb for pick-up. That twice per year option is no longer available, and has been replaced with the new green bin service. Under the new system, home owners have been provided with a 240 litre green bin that can be used for the following items: • Grass; • Leaves; • Pine needles and pine cones; • Garden plants, corn and tomato stalks; and
• Branches and prunings up to 5 centimetres (2 inches) in diameter and less than one metre (3 feet) in length. Between the months of March and November, the bins are collected every other week on a cycle that alternates with collection of the blue recycling bin. A recently completed survey by the Regional District indicates that approximately 85% of residents surveyed are either ‘satisfied,’ or ‘somewhat satisfied,’ with the new yard waste collection system. However, among those with concerns, a common complaint was that the bins should be larger, or the frequency of collection increased. For those whose needs are not being met adequately, some options are, or will be, available: • Up to two additional green bins can be purchased, for a one time cost of $55 each, and an annual payment of $30 per extra bin to cover additional collection costs; • An option to replace the existing 240 litre green bin with a 360 litre bin for a cost of approximately $10 is likely to be available in the
near future; • Excess garden waste may be transported to the Peachland compost site which is located approximately 6km up Princeton Avenue of the right hand side; and • Residents can, at their own cost, contact any of the contractors listed on the Peachland website for a special yard waste pick up. Home owners wishing to purchase an additional green bin can pick up the necessary application form from the municipal offices, or download it from the District of Peachland website. A similar procedure will be in place for upgrading from a 240 litre bin to a 360 litre bin, when that option is available. The municipality and the Regional District will be carefully monitoring customer satisfaction with the new system. Meanwhile, any general questions or concerns can be directed to the Regional District Waste Reduction Office: P h o n e : 2 50. 4 69.6250 Email: recycle@cord.bc.ca Address: 1450 KLO Road, Kelowna, BC, V1W 3Z4 Hours: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday (except holidays)

Stand easy: News from Royal Canadian Legion #69 By Patricia Day
Branch #69 has been a hubbub of activity the past two weeks. The Last Post was sounded for Gordon Sanderson. The community and Legion came together to bid farewell to a favourite son. Gordon had been a member of Branch 69 for 64 and a half years! He served overseas in WWII, and after the war he returned to Peachland to make it his home. Do you often what happens to those tickets that you throw into the chest after the meat draw? Four times a year, these tickets see daylight again and the lucky ticket holder wines $100. Last Saturday, Helen Hailstones was the winner. Congratulations, Helen. Oops, made an error in information concerning the kitchen hours. It is open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don’t forget that on March 19 there is karaoke with Anita. Come on down and sing your heart away and make sure that you have your dancing shoes on! The entertainment begins at 1930 hours. Anita was the “A” in the MADames group, which entertained on March 13. The rest of the group consisted of Melita and Dagmar. These gals came together in song for a fundraiser for the Wellness Centre. The Legion offering their facility and the MADames donating their talent to the Wellness Centre to help sustain their programs serving our community is a fi ne example of how two
organizations can come together for the community. Our Entertainment Chairperson, Diann Tanchak, has a great entertainment lineup for the future gigs on the Branch 69 stage. Keep you eye on the View for further details. Do you have an idea for entertainment? Give Diann a message by getting in touch with the Legion at 250.767.9404. In our branch, we have an unsung hero, and that would be Dorothy Blair. Well, who is she? Dorothy is our First Vicepresident and acting Service Officer. She is also in charge of food that is served at our special events such as celebrations, memorial services and Remembrance Day reception, just to mention a few. An event would not be an event without Dorothy’s egg salad sandwiches. Oh, I also forgot to mention that she is our membership chairperson, which makes her responsible to the collecting of dues and seeing that the cards are up to date. If you receive an award or medal, it is because Dorothy has checked your record to make sure that you receive it. She also carries proudly our flags and is a member of the Colour Party. In the past, she was President of the Ladies Auxiliary and served for many years with them. She has been on the Executive of the Legion in various offices for many terms. Don’t forget the General Meeting on March 22 at 1930 hours. See you there! ...‘Till next time.
Romi, Sharon and Heather would like to welcome you at "the Lanai ladies boutique"! With our combined talents and experience we pride ourselves in what we have to offer .......classic looks that are chic, trendy and age appropriate.
We look forward to meeting you, our guests!

Shepherd’s Pie
Food For the Soul The depth and breadth of love We are well into the season of Lent, a period of forty days prior to Easter. Lent reflects both the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert in reflection, prayer and discernment before he began his ministry of preaching, teaching and healing as well as the forty years which the Israelites spent wandering in the desert learning to become a people/nation, before they crossed into Canaan/Palestine. For many Christians around the world, this is a time for self-examination. Are we truly living life as God intends us to? Are there aspects of our living and our being that we need to prayerfully work
on ridding ourselves of? Are there aspects of living and being that we need to prayerfully work on growing into in our lives, that we lack? Do we need to worry less and trust God more? Do we need to be less self-centred and more concerned for others? Do we need to be less discontented and more grateful? How might we put away our judging of others and instead focus on the image of God within them? There are so many aspects of our living for us to reflect upon. In the middle of the period of Lent comes the Lectionary Reading in Luke’s Gospel Chapter 15, of the story of the
‘Loving Father.’ Some of you may know this as the story of the ‘Prodigal Son,’ and yet when we look at the story, the most recklessly extravagant [prodigal] person in this parable is the Father. How might that be? After all the younger son had demanded his inheritance [half the family farm and wealth] before his father’s death. In other words, he had no regard for the suffering of his father as he had in effect said to his father “you are dead to me.” The Father sold up half of what he owned and gave it to his younger son. Land in those days was considered a gift from God, just as life was, and
therefore one did not easily dipose of it. By selling up the father was saying to the son, “I am giving you life.” The son then went off to another country and spent his inheritance on riotous living. In present day terms, he might well have speculated wildly on the stock market, partied it up in clubs, spent money on alcohol and drugs, been a high roller at the local casino and generally behaved as though the good times would never end. However the market crashed, the money ran out, and all his good-time friends melted away. There he was, on the street, no friends, no home, no money, eating
Rev. Elaine Diggle, Minister eachland United Churc Peachland Church at a soup kitchen and sleeping when he could at a shelter or when really fortunate at a Gospel Mission. In first century Palestine terms, he ended up looking after and sleeping with a herd of pigs, which, as he admits, even pig swill was better food than he had. Finally, this young man realises that his only hope of a better life is to go back home and trade on his father’s great love. Even though he had treated his father as though he were dead, he still hoped that he might be allowed to be a servant in his father’s household – at least his father’s servants were well cared for. But what do we see? As the profligate son nears home, his father, ever on the lookout in the hope that one day his beloved child might return, runs to meet him, embraces him and calls for servants to bring clean clothes, a ring for his hand signifying that he is indeed a family member, and a command to kill the best young steer in the herd and prepare a wondrous
barbecue to celebrate the re-birth of his treasured son. All this before the son even has time to beg for his father’s forgiveness. The recklessly extravagant love of the father was there. How else could the son respond but to beg for forgiveness and we hope, turn his life around? We do not know what happens in the future with this family. We do know that his older brother was very bitter that their father had rewarded such abysmal behaviour from his brother with love and feasting. After all, the older brother had stayed on and worked day and night to try and build the farm back up to its former profitableness. He had had no parties in his honour, just years of hard work. Can you not wonder that his resentment did not pour forth even more vitriolically at his father’s actions? In many ways all three men are lost: the father lost a son, the younger lost a real sense of family and needs to learn how to call his father ‘father’ again, and both sons need to learn what it is to be ‘brothers’ along with a very real need to understand the depth and breadth of their father’s prodigal love. So too do we.
