District seeking clarity after MOE official issues warning letter ERIN CHRISTIE EDITOR

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has issued a warning to the District of Peachland.

In a letter sent to the district’s Director of Operations Joe Mitchell, Environmental Protection Officer Stephanie Little revealed that environmental protection staff had paid a visit to Peachland’s recently closed landfill on Princeton Rd., only to discover, upon inspection, that

the compost site is currently in non-compliance with its Environmental Management Act (EMA).

Specifically, Little continues, her staff found the site to be in violation of Section 1.1.1. of the Closure Plan by allowing the deposition of waste at the site and Section 2.3.5., by allowing compost transfer to take place that has not been approved.

Little goes on to outline three possible outcomes if the district does not comply within 30 days.

Mitchell says the warning is based more on semantics and a miscommunication than reality and is currently

pursuing clarification from the MOE regarding the letter.

Up until its closure in October, the compost site was managed under an operational certificate from the MOE as a compost transfer station, which limits the use of the property to a transfer and storage area of woody debris.

Mitchell says that’s exactly how the site has been operated and hopes to clear the issue up as soon as possible.

A family’s weekend snowmobile excursion on the outskirts of Peachland has prompted a Kelowna RCMP officer to issue a timely warning.

“I believe hunting season is over,” Cpl. Joe Duncan told The View on Nov. 24.

“But people are finding ammo on the ground and it’s important that they realize, even if the shells are empty – call the RCMP and we’ll come pick it up.”

Duncan’s warning comes three days after a local family reportedly discovered two live large-calibre bullets buried beneath the snow on a deadend road just outside the Brenda Mine gates.

According to Duncan, the family reported finding the ammunition after lighting a fire to keep warm while taking a break from snowmobiling.

The family, who did not wish to make an official report and tipped off local media anonymously, reported being frightened after hearing a loud bang.

“They said they heard a gunshot and then discovered the bullets,” Duncan explained. “It is definitely concerning that people are that careless. Someone could have been hurt.”

Peachland Fire and Rescue Service Chief Dennis Craig, who has come across live ammunition while attending structure fires, echoed Duncan’s sentiment but says it’s unlikely that the ammo in question could have killed any-

one.

Craig says for the ammunition to have caused harm it would have had to have been contained within a confined space, like the chamber or barrel of a firearm, where pressure would be built up and the bullet forced out and its energy concentrated in one direction.

“There’s always a chance that if live ammunition is near fire it could blow hot material [due to the expanding gases], or shrapnel, and someone could get injured. It’s not impossible, but it is highly unlikely that it would kill someone in that instance,” Craig explained.

According to Craig the “bang” the family claimed to hear people was the pop of the primer and gunpowder burning.

“We’ve seen it more than once when we’ve been out attending structure fires,” he continued.

“People who hunt have ammo out in their garage or something and occasionally you hear that ‘pop’ sound. But essentially, it’s harmless.”

Just the same, he added, it’s never wise to handle ammunition, live or otherwise.

Craig and Cpl. Duncan urge anyone who finds ammunition to contact the RCMP. “If they can mark the area and give us a call, then we go up there and get it and make sure it is destroyed,” said Duncan.

“If you find ammo in the snow, or ammo dumped somewhere, or even old ammo in the garage, by all means give us a call and we will go up there and we will make sure it is destroyed.”

Non-stop flights between Kelowna and Victoria announced VIEW STAFF

British Columbia-based Pacific Coastal Airlines is now offering non-stop flights between Kelowna and Vancouver.

The daily flights on the airline’s Saab 340 aircraft will operate seven days a week, twice on weekdays and once on weekends.

“We know there is a significant market opportunity for this new route,” says YLW airport director Sam Samaddar.

“This route will greatly serve both business and leisure travelers.”

Pacific Coastal Airlines Ltd. is a small Canadian airline that operates scheduled, charter and cargo services to destinations in British Columbia. With the establishment of this new air service, PASCO has chosen to set up a new permanent base at YLW, which includes the hiring of six new staff.

“We’re strongly committed to the Okanagan and we think that the region will really benefit from this new base,” said PASCO’s spokesperson Jenelle Hynes.

Major tax hikes to fund infrastructure replacement Council says saving now means less pain later TREVOR NICHOLS

Significant tax hikes are on the horizon in Peachland, after council approved a new debt and reserve policy at its Nov. 24 regular meeting.

The policy will see Peachland residents face multiple tax increases over the next several years as the district begins building financial reserves to tackle major infrastructure replacement projects.

At the Nov. 24 Committee of the Whole meeting council heard from Scott Shepherd of Urban Systems Ltd., the consulting company that’s been working with Peachland on its asset management plan since 2009.

Shepherd told council Peachland’s $135 million worth of infrastructure is aging, and much of it will have to be replaced over the next 10-20 years. Ideally, he said, the district would spend $2 million a year to do that.

But with that kind of cash little more than a pipe dream, he presented a more pragmatic solution.

By extending some infrastructure past its recommended lifespan, Shepherd said the district can get

away with investing $750,000 each year to replace the highest priority projects.

To do that, Urban Systems recommended the district institute three separate tax hikes, starting next year.

To build the general reserve fund (used for general infrastructure-like roads), the district will institute a two per cent cumulative tax increase over five years.

This means a $25.50 per parcel increase this year, with the expectation of similar increases each year over the next approximately five years.

Additionally, to build a reserve fund for water infrastructure replacement, the district will institute a $46.40 per parcel tax hike. Finally, a sewer fund will be built with a $16.06 per parcel tax.

Altogether, the

increases mean an additional $87.90 of tax per parcel next year, on top of any other levies and tax increases (including the water parcel tax the district already collects to help fund a new water treatment plant).

That goal is for that amount to further increase each year as council brings the taxes up to a point where it can contribute $750,000 a year to reserve funds.

Council has known for a while it would have to increase taxes to keep the town’s sewers, roads and water mains working, and most councillors seemed to accept Shepherd’s numbers with pained but pragmatic resignation.

At the Nov. 24 regular council meeting Mayor Cindy Fortin pointed out council chose the least expensive of the five

options Urban Systems presented, taking on a little more risk to make the tax increases more bearable for Peachland residents.

Coun. Terry Condon said the plan “shows responsible planning” and “a commitment to properly maintain our infrastructure.”

“In terms of the cost it’s going to be a bit of a bitter pill to swallow, but we can’t avoid it. We can keep pushing this stuff off, we can minimize it, but we can’t avoid it.

We’re going to have to deal with this.”

Coun. Mario Vucinovic echoed Condon, pointing out that if something breaks down in five to ten years and council has no reserves it could mean a 10-12 per cent tax increase all at once.

to swallow the bitter pill. He called the $750,000 a year reserve funds “utopic,” and while he agreed council needed to act, said the amount was too high.

“This is just frightfully expensive. We’re looking at a supreme amount of increase through taxation to [build up the reserve funds]. Does it need to be done? Absolutely. Can it be done?

Most also agreed that communicating the significant importance of the reserve funds to Peachland resident will be vital.

Coun. Keith Thom noted council usually does a good job of selling visible items like splash parks and other projects, but projects like this are

even more important.

“Between me and you I would rather flush my toilet than go to a splash park.

Sadly this is invisible.

We’ll spend millions of dollars and no one will see it,” he said.

“We have to give

credit to our residents that they will feel the same way that we need to maintain what we already have in place. They will understand this is a wise investment,” Coun. Mike Kent said.

Who is behind the BMX track on the site of the landfill?

Was there a hidden agenda from council for the closing of the landfill?

Joe Mitchell’s report of Nov. 6 says the BMX site would cost approximately $250,000. Landfill costs were between $50,000-$350,000.

No alternate options for the landfill which benefited all Peachlanders seems to have been entertained, for instance: • Opening one day a week (Westbank is only four days); • Opening two months in the spring and two months in the fall; or • Volunteers checking that only Peachlanders are using it by showing drivers licence addresses at the site.

There are so many other options, perhaps a service group is willing to help.

As for no burning allowed – the Ministry of Environment issues permits on Crown land in spring and fall for burning and for fire mitigation.

We are asked to be green and keep our yards free of needles, brush etc, but for a lot of residents you have just made this a great deal more difficult.

Since the closure of the landfill I have observed daily trucks and utility trailers with yard waste traveling up Princeton Ave. Most do not have a logo stating they are a yard care service. I wonder where they are dumping it? How do they enter the site? Do they pay the municipality for the convenience?

A BMX track will benefit how many Peachlanders and/or visitors for how long each year? A compost site benefits all Peachlanders.

Did the council even consider contracting out the chipping process?

Are Peachlanders willing to lie down and roll over on an issue that needs revisiting?

Regarding the energy situation, one has to decide whether they want the standard of living that we enjoy in Canada. Yes, we hear about the dirty oil from Alberta oil sands, but the world would be glad to use it when fracking and other fields dry up.

Certainly there is thermal, but who would be prepared to build a power station costing millions of dollars on a venture that could implode, rendering the plant useless. The French and Chinese are building non-nuclear fission plants, maybe the cost is too high. Solar: the average home owner could not afford the installation, as the direct current it produces would have to be converted to alternating current to run household and other uses. It would eventually cost more than the present installations are providing.

Wind-farms. Great, for the companies that get involved all these wonderful moneymaking projects. Their contracts are “money spinners” and you, the user, pay for it: even at times of lack of wind and no generation the contractors still get paid. Maintenance costs are high. Europe is re-

considering grants to companies to build these farms.

As for Kenya, they were one of the African countries that wanted to sell the West carbon credits. That is why Harper declined as it did not solve the lowering of carbon.

Australia does not have a carbon tax. It was rescinded. The thinking was you could use carbon as long as you pay the carbon tax. Here it goes into general revenue to be given to pet projects.

Your gas bill charges a carbon tax and clean energy levy. Hence dirty natural gas. Plus methane.

We are lucky in B.C. as we have hydro plants, others including the U.S. have mainly coal fired generating turbines. Nevertheless in B.C. we get opposition to new dams which is essential for hydro generation. Do you want electricity or not? Customers certainly complain when they are without for a few hours. To sum up, nothing is renewable. It either runs out or costs make these so-called renewables inhibitive.

Skating season has arrived in Kelowna VIEW STAFF

It’s that time again – time to skate.

The Stuart Park outdoor ice rink is anticipated to begin its fifth season of free public skating on Dec. 1.

Skaters can expect to be on the ice by 10 a.m. on opening day, with the rink then open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily until late February, weather permitting.

“The ice making process is underway,” said Steve Fagan, Arenas and Stadiums Supervisor.

“Crews have already been working from 4 p.m. until approximately midnight and will continue to do so over the next few days.”

Residents can view the ice making process through the still-image webcam on the City of Kelowna’s website.

Interested skaters are also reminded to check the webcam before heading to the rink to check ice conditions or see if the rink is closed for maintenance. The webcam feed is updated every few minutes.

Skate rentals are available on site daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the skating season, except Christmas Day. The public is asked to abide by the rink regulations as posted on surrounding signs and encouraged to wear helmets.

The fire pit adjacent to the outdoor rink is currently undergoing final adjustments and will be operational once those are completed.

For those looking for a rink closer to their neighbourhood, the Capital News Centre, Memorial Arena and Rutland Arena all have public skating times. For more information, visit kelowna.ca/recreation.

Government changes its self-imposed time line on refugees coming to Canada MP DAN ALBAS COMMENTARY

In last week’s online MP report I committed to providing further updates as they become available with respect to the Liberal

Dan Albas, MP government’s plan to relocate 25,000 refugees to Canada prior to the end of 2015. This week more information has been provided on this topic that continues to be raised by citizens in Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola daily.

The most significant announcement from the Liberal government this week is that the timeline to relocate 25,000

refugees prior to the end of 2015 will not be met. Instead the revised deadline has been extended into March of 2016.

Other changes include privately sponsored refugees now being included within the total number of 25,000 refugees relocated to Canada. It has also been announced that refugees who are women, children, families and men that may be members of LGBT communities will be prioritized for refugee status.

How does this process work? Canada will accept referrals from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) who has identified refugees from Jordan and Lebanon that meet the criteria. Refugees who are accepting relocation to Canada will complete an iris

scan to confirm their identity.

Once identity has been confirmed, the Government has indicated that the process will include a medical examination, screening for communicable diseases and also security screening including biometric scans that includes finger printing and digital photo identification which will be cross referenced with various immigration, law enforcement and security databases.

Refugees who successfully pass through this screening process will then be issued permanent resident visas and flown free of charge (in the past refugees were loaned airfare fees) via private charter aircraft to either Montreal or Toronto airports.

be resettled in 36 different cities across Canada with 13 being located in Quebec, and the remaining 23 outside of Quebec including several here in British Columbia. At this point the full list of cities and breakdown of numbers for each of these cities has not been publicly released, however it is expected in the near future.

Some will view these recent changes as broken election promises from the Liberal government.

From my perspective the original timeline announced by the Liberals was an arbitrary political one and I will credit the government for recognizing that taking

the time to process and resettle refugees properly are far more important considerations than meeting its own politically self-imposed timelines.

While all Canadians may have different views on this topic I believe we are united in the desire to see new citizens welcomed in a manner that offers the best possible chance for success for everyone as we grow our Canadian family.

Also occurring this past week was an announcement by the leader of the official opposition, Hon. Rona Ambrose, appointing the opposition critic positions.

Imagine being able to unlock your home without having to search for keys, or see the new Star Wars movie without having to deal with “Suzy seat-kickers” or “Tommy texters”?

What if you could find out the nutritional value of your afternoon snack simply by placing it on the kitchen counter?

These are just two of the cool or creepy – depending on your relationship with technology – futuristic features showcased in the Telus Future Home, which was on display at the Okanagan Lake Shopping Centre in West Kelowna from Nov. 15 to 20.

The 560-square foot home, built to simulate a small condo, has been touring British Columbia and Alberta since early this fall. Telus spokesman Ryan Bazeley, who was on hand to give media tours, says the home is meant to show potential consumers cutting-edge technology available today and smarthome innovations on the horizon.

“Think of all the technology we used to see on shows like Star Trek,” Bazeley explained.

But unlike Star Trek, he added, this sort of technology could be available as soon as five years from now.

The goal of the tour, Bazeley noted, is to offer a “close-up look” at an immersive technology experience that demonstrates how technology will help consumers live more efficiently.

“The concept is that everything talks to each other. They’re working for you. This allows you to enjoy more free time.”

of Telus’ “state-ofthe-art” fibre optic network.

According to the Va n c o u v e r - b a s e d communications officer, 81 per cent of Peachland is currently covered by Telus Fibre – a network made from flexible, transparent fibres of glass slightly thicker than a strand of hair.

These fibres, Bazeley explained, transmit data as pulses of light, which allows large amounts of information to be sent.

“In terms of speed, it’s close to the speed of light,” he added.

This type of network, he continued, will allow for a number of high tech features that will “one day soon,” be available in homes.

These features, all of which were on

display in the Future Home, include: • Security systems that allow users to secure and unlock their home using facial recognition; • A smart kitchen which is equipped with an interactive meal planner, to help users cook something according to the ingredients in their fridge, guide them through a new recipe and calculate the nutritional value of the meal; • A connected home office with an interactive touch table, allowing for users to schedule appointments or meetings and hold them via high-definition video conference; and • Connected thermostats and lighting, which enable users to control lighting and heating from a smart-

phone or tablet.

It’s a lot like that.” Bazeley joked.

Each feature, he noted, is controlled by the central command hub, which sits in the entryway.

“A screen as you enter the home acts as a central information system allowing someone to receive notifications, plan their day and monitor their home.”

– that’s where it’s stored,” he added.

“For example, if you’re a fan of Downton Abbey or Star Wars, it’ll let you know it’s downloaded the latest episode or movie.

Or, maybe you missed the delivery of your new bike. You can reschedule it from this touch screen.”

Speaking of which, Bazeley says if you’re feeling under the weather and but want to see the latest movie, a 78-inch curved HD television will simulate the

movie experience and stream the movie while you avoid the real-world annoyances of ringing cellphones or noisy theatre-goers.

Bazeley said because many features are at the conceptual stage, their costs have not yet been determined.

“We’re basically laying the groundwork for the smart home and businesses and of tomorrow. The point of this tour is to show people what’s coming.

We’re really excited.”

Ask Lucy Blu and the Blu Boys to define their sound and you’ll likely spark a lengthy conversation.

Sitting together at a table tucked away at the back of Beach Ave. Café on Nov. 18, drummer Danny Sameshima, bassist Terry Cormack, guitarist Marco Polloni and Debra Cunningham (Lucy Blu herself) tried to arrive at a conclusion.

Blu said the band was trying to stick within the realm of rockabilly and swing.

Maybe some blues, she added; some jazz.

Polloni piped up, suggesting Motown and R&B. The conversation continued.

“Let’s just say we’re not heavy metal,” Blu finished with a laugh, “But not really rock or country either.”

Blu, a ten-year Peachland resident, has been crafting her songs as a solo artist for years. It was only a few months ago that

Take a look at a typical setlist and you can see why that sound is such a complicated conversation.

They might start out with some vintage Ruth Brown, continue on to a few originals, morph that into a classic Ray Charles number before continuing on with covers of Holly

Cole and Sting. Next, more originals (Jelly Roll is a favourite).

Then throw in some Amy Winehouse, some classic blues and some jazz. Pinning down their genre gets complicated. According to Cormack, that is the beauty of Lucy Blu. “It’s not just another band. I’ve played in a lot of bands, but this band is unique in that the sound is different

from your usual top 40 cover bands. And there’s a lot of space, it’s just an easy band to listen to. We don’t need a lot of volume to be effective. It’s a very versatile band,” he explained.

Blu chimed in her agreement.

“My vision was to have each instrument just sing. So when you’re listening to the song there’s not too much going on, it’s just listen to the bass, listen to the drums, ooh, listen to the vocals,” she added.

“A lot of what I write is pretty sassy too. I don’t take myself too seriously and I think a lot of things in life people take way too seriously. So I can laugh at myself, laugh at situations and just have some fun.”

As the Blu Boys begin to make their mark on the local music scene, Blu is also working to raise the musical bar right here in Peachland.

She’s begun to establish an informal monthly concert series at the Edgewater

Inn and Pub. The goal is to bring a bigname act to town each month.

It started earlier this month when she helped bring David Gogo (Blu and the boys opened), and will continue when Alfie Zappacosta comes to town Dec. 4 (Blu will play that show as well). She said she al-

Grades 2-7. The Grade 7 kids and I would eat our lunch together as we programmed in BASIC and thought we were so clever.

Kids were learning the Logo programming language and doing my workshops on Saturday mornings at the college. Turkle wrote about children perceiving computers as sort of alive, and I had animated conversations with my students about this.

Turkle, a psychoanalyst and researcher at MIT, continues to study the effects of the computer culture on people. Life On the Screen came out in 1995. Her 2011 book, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less from Each Other, is a fascinating read.

The first half of the book focuses on the current robotic movement and describes case studies and field work of people’s relationships with several types of robots.

Turkle observed people developing relationships with sociable robots and treating them as if they were alive. Paro, a seal-like furry robot, purrs and responds to the quality of touch it’s given. Adults and

humans and machines.

Carr states that flying is safer because of automation, but in 2013 an FAA bulletin reported that there was evidence from incidents and accidents that pilots could become too dependent on autopilots and computerized systems, and this could “lead to degradation of the pilot’s ability to quickly recover the aircraft from an undesired state.” It

advised that pilots spend more time flying by hand so they retain their flying skills.

Carr discusses the use of computerized medical records. The doctor, with his back to the patient, can be so focused on making notes on the computer that he misses the patient’s face for signals he might have seen. There is a section on the impact of high-speed and high-frequency trad-

ing on stock markets, and some protective steps being taken by the Royal Bank of Canada. He describes robotic lawnmowers that don’t stop to remove a kitten or frog from the mowing path. This leads to a discussion of programming moral decisions into robots, and that leads to thinking about robotic warfare and then the potential for robots to go rogue.

“We’ve put into motion a cycle that, depending on your point of view, is either virtuous or vicious.

Automation breeds automation.”

The Glass Cage as a title refers to the barrier that technology erects, separating us from life, emaciating us. The cover illustration shows shattered glass, a signal that we can break out of the cage.

Carr’s final chapter is intriguing. He refers to Robert Frost’s poems. He ponders what human life is all about, the value of manual labour for focusing the mind and finding flow in our activities. Turkle and Carr are not anti-technology. They are observers and invite us to do the same.

“We are connected as we have never been before, and we seem to have damaged ourselves in the process. There has been a dramatic decline in young people’s interest in other people, less empathy, increased numbers of people feeling detached from their bodies and close to being unaware of basic courtesies.”

She speaks of device addictions and the erosion of attention.

Nicholas Carr wrote The Glass Cage: Automation and Us in 2014. He writes that automation came about to increase precision, economics, and reduce operator workload and training requirements.

children were not happy to give up the robot after a threeweek trial. People were soothed, talked to the robot, and felt satisfied to comfort and care for it.

Turkle reports that many people find that relating to a robot is more satisfying than a human. They make fewer demands, are dependable and predictable. She writes about robotic caregivers. A class of Grade 5 students discusses the pros and cons of robot caregivers and social robots. They are concerned that their grandparents might like the robots more than them. They ask, “Don’t we have people for these jobs?”

The second half of the book deals with the networked life.

Turkle says, “We love our objects, but enchantment comes with a price.” She describes the dilemma of always being on call. Phones ping during meetings, dinner, movies. The meaning of community is being redefined.

Many people prefer online community relationships more than face-to-face ones.

There is less responsibility and less time taken. People are

Safety is a primary concern for everyone during the winter.

With furnaces and fireplaces running, it is important to have a carbon monoxide monitor working in your home. Plans for snow and ice removal should be made now, before the snow arrives (the Peachland Wellness Centre has contact information for people who offer these services). And try to wear flat shoes that grip on the ice to prevent falls! Use a cane, bring a friend or caregiver with you for those refreshing

jaunts along Beach Avenue.

Having items to keep you warm during a power outage or while driving on the road is also important to consider – candles, flashlights, canned food, bottled water, and warm clothing (toque, scarf, mittens) and blankets are essential for the short term.

These are also essential for your vehicle when taking a drive, especially through the mountain passes. One never knows if there will be a 20-minute delay or a six-hour delay on the Connector or Coquihalla with winter storms and traffic accidents.

Not everything is

so serious about cold winter weather. One ought to also embrace the joy of another’s company with fun activities like going for coffee with a friend, playing cards with another, or even helping someone to go out and get their groceries or do their banking.

Finally, don’t forget your pets! Provide a warm place for them to get in from the cold, protect their feet from ice and salt/ de-icing products, and provide fresh water every day.

TV series showcasing Okanagan wine country will be broadcast in New Zealand KEITH LACEY

ABERDEEN PUBLISHING Wine lovers and television viewers in New Zealand will soon get a good look at how winemakers in the Okanagan Valley live and produce some of the world’s best wine.

The producer of the cable television series that focuses on the lives of winemakers across the South Okanagan is thrilled that a cable network in New Zealand has signed a deal to broadcast the entire first season.

Kenton Gilchrist is the producer of Ventures in Wine Country, which started production in the spring of 2014 at three wineries located in the South Okanagan – Covert Farms in Oliver, Painted Rock in Penticton and The Hatch Winery in West Kelowna.

Shooting for the series wrapped up in early August with the official grand opening of The Hatch Winery and post production wrapped up a couple of weeks later.

Gilchrist and his business partner Jon Hunwick, who are co-owners of Asymetriq, a film and music production company, had signed a contract with Cana Media to try and distribute Ventures in Wine Country once the first season was completed.

Gilchrist just found out last week that the Country Channel in New Zealand has pur-

chased the rights to broadcast the entire six episodes of season one.

It’s expected the series will be broadcast in New Zealand later this fall, said Gilchrist.

“We signed a distribution deal about a year ago and Cana Media has been trying to find buyers ever since,” he said. “The cable network in New Zealand wanted to see the show, they saw it and liked it and agreed to sign a contract. This is our first licensing contract, so we’re pretty excited.

The entire first season will be shown across New Zealand, which is obviously pretty exciting news.”

Negotiations continue to have Ventures in Wine Country shown in numerous countries around the world, said Gilchrist.

The distribution company he is working with continues to negotiate with numerous television networks, including Globosat Brazil, MTV 3 Finland, UFB Media China, Nineplanners Korea, Discovery India, Canal Plus Poland, Discovery Nordics, Vibrant TV USA, A&E Asia and Hong Kong Cable.

Five of the six episodes of Ventures in Wine Country were funded by Canadian multimedia giant Telus, with the sixth funded through a Kickstarter online fundraising campaign, said Gilchrist.

The series introduces the owners of all three wineries from

the time they started planting their grapes last spring and concludes with all the steps necessary to get the wine to market, including growing the crop, harvesting the grapes and bottling the wine and getting it to wine lovers across the province, said Gilchrist.

“The whole idea was to tell the story of an entire vintage…from grape to glass,” he said.

“During the process of shooting the show, we were fortunate enough to have to deal with some pretty significant political issues affecting the inner turmoil taking place in the wine industry in the Okanagan Valley right now. This included marketing and quality standards and this added a lot of drama to the show we weren’t really expecting.”

Gilchrist, who acts as the show’s main writer as well as producer, said he couldn’t be prouder of the final product.

“It took a lot of time and effort and these wineries are all trying to get their product out on the world market, while trying to deal with television crews trying to tell their individual stories,” he said.

“We certainly had our challenges, but I think the show turned out great.

“We got to meet and work with some fantastic people…overall, it has been a fantastic experience.”

Gilchrist is hopeful other cable networks

in other countries will be interested in signing a deal to broadcast Ventures in Wine Country.

“Our distributors are still working hard to shop it around,” he said. “The bigger the country and the more people who could potentially watch it would mean a bigger and better deal, so it would be really nice to land a deal somewhere like Germany or India … we’ll keep trying and you never know what can happen.’

While there are currently no plans right now to shoot a second season of Ventures in Wine Country, Gilchrist said he has “pitched some ideas” at Telus, including a season that could focus on women who work in the wine industry in the South Okanagan.

Gilchrist is inviting the community to an event at the Watermark Beach Resort in Osoyoos on Friday, Dec. 4.

“The show is going to premiere on YouTube, so we’re throwing a little party complete with snacks and drinks that will be open to the public,” he said.

Well, only on the front page of The View – remember? We had a fantastic evening on October 1st – so much so that we plan on repeating the fun, without the bats, in April. This time the event will be open to the public with a limited number of tickets available, so be on your toes, watch this space: you won’t want to miss out on dinner with a difference!

People often ask “What do you guys DO in Rotary?” Not easy to answer. We have fun, we find projects which will be of benefit to the community and we find ways to generate the funds for those projects. We meet on Thursdays at noon at the Gasthaus if you’d really like to meet us and get to know us better. Then there are the guest speakers who offer challenges and provide new information about a wealth of topics which challenge us in different ways. Just two weeks ago, we had a presentation from a co-founder of “Hands Up for Africa” - a charity founded to help look after and educate orphans in Kenya’s Nairobi slums. (www.handsupforafrica.com). An inspiring and heart-warming presentation, indeed.

So: we learn a lot, we do a lot - and we have fun while we are doing it. If noon doesn’t work for you as a meeting time, we are planning on setting up a breakfast meeting, once a month to start, to see if we can reach a broader audience. We’ll keep you posted!

Of course, one of my favourite projects in Rotary is the Youth programme. We have sent a student to India this year and we are acting as hosts – along with our partner clubs in West Kelowna – to a student from the Netherlands. Learning at a young age about other nations and cultures can be a life changing experience. Being a part of that is an incredible reward in itself. Knowing that we are promoting understanding and tolerance is a really positive boost in this troubled world in which we live. We also sponsor youth for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) weekend, every year. Leadership training doesn’t have to be hard: it can be fun – ask anyone who has experienced RYLA: they’ll tell you!

One of the real benefits of providing experiences for young people is that we can have them return to the Club to tell us about their year, or their week or their weekend. The stories are amazing and I defy anyone to tell me that their trust in our Canadian youth isn’t re-affirmed by listening to one of these presentations.

Yep! I’m proud to be able to be a member of Rotary, and to contribute a little to doing good in the world.

I am amazed too at the generosity and support we receive from all of you in Peachland who, over the years have made a truly major contribution to helping the victims of disaster in Haiti, Honduras, Cameroon, Bolivia, Nepal, Pakistan, Kurdistan and, the Phillipines with your contributions and those of individual club members to the ShelterBox programme. You are incredible. Thank you all.

New stats show B.C. is a key Canadian destination International visitors are up by 7.6 per cent according to over last year, according to Statistics Canada.

This represents an additional 290,532 visitors coming to B.C. As well, visitors in Sept. were up 11.5 per cent over Sept., 2014.

These numbers, explains Destination British Columbia CEO Marsha Walden, build on the excellent overall visitor numbers

from last year.

In 2014, the province had the highest growth overall in total overnight visitors as well as the highest growth rate in international visitation of any province in Canada.
